Her in-depth explorations of the uncertain histories of ancient objects reimagine their pasts while charting new possibilities for their present and future.

Dr. Robb’s talk will focus on Porras-Kim’s affinity for fragments, conflicting histories, undeciphered texts, and other instances of uncertainty within the space of the museum. He will also explore how to address the challenges of maintaining knowledge over centuries in shifting institutional contexts through an examination of her Mesoamerican works.

The presentation will conclude with a question and answer session with the audience.

This disciplined group of men and women, with their own style of music, has much more to give than just a great sound. They offer inspiration and the message of music’s nurturing powers for people with and without disabilities.

The Spirit of Goodwill Band is playing as part of an all-star jazz line-up on Lincoln Road (1100 Lincoln Road). Do not miss the South Beach Jazz Festival’s “Jazz Hits the Road,” a beautiful day of jazz music.

*The event is free, but please RSVP. This event is complimentary; however, we kindly request that you RSVP. While donations are optional, they are greatly appreciated and contribute to funding Power Access scholarships, our mission, and community programs. Power Access is committed to promoting accessibility and inclusion and does this by hosting the Annual South Beach Jazz Festival. The festival leverages the profound heritage of jazz music to broaden our community’s understanding and appreciation of individuals with unique abilities.

Modern Cuban Painters From Havana to New York 12/12/24

Otto G. Richter Library

Coral Gables, Florida, 33136

Join us for a panel discussion celebrating the launch of “Modern Cuban Painters: From Havana to New York,” a new book that delves into themes of resistance and the integration of 1940s Cuban modern art into the United States’ cultural landscape. This work highlights the legacy of artists who led the shift toward modernity in Cuba.

Published by the Fundación Mariano Rodríguez, “Modern Cuban Painters: From Havana to New York,” commemorates the 80th anniversary of both the historic exhibition “Modern Cuban Painters” at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) as well as the seminal book “Pintura Cubana de Hoy.” Featuring essays by scholars Elizabeth Thompson-Goizueta and Luz Merino Acosta, as well as curator Susanna Temkin, and a chronology by Cristina Figueroa, this publication examines New York’s role as a cultural hub that welcomed prominent Cuban modernists like Lam, Carreño, Cundo, Mariano, and Amelia into a dynamic space of intercultural dialogue.

In 1942, Alfred H. Barr, the founding director of MoMA, visited Havana for the first time amidst a period of creative splendor, fueled by the work of avant-garde artists. This visit laid the groundwork for “Modern Cuban Painters” (1944), MoMA’s landmark exhibition—the first to showcase the impact Cuba’s Modern Art movement had in the U.S. The exhibition included “Pintura Cubana de Hoy” (1944), an essential text in Cuban modern art history with essays by critic José Gómez Sicre and edited by art patron María Luisa Gómez Mena, an influential but often overlooked advocate of Cuban art.

This event will be presented in both English and Spanish languages.

World Premiere of “From Brooklyn to Boca” 1/9/25

World Premiere of “From Brooklyn to Boca”
Thursday, 01/09/2025-, 07:30 pm-09:30 pm
The Studio at Mizner Park
201 West Plaza Real,
Boca Raton, Florida, 33432
Website
Cost: $45-$75

What happens when a not-so-perfect Italian Catholic family in the Federal Witness Protection Program struggles to blend in as a near-perfect Jewish family in Boca Raton? Comedy, humor, laughs and joy ensue. In a play about family, love, relationships and acceptance, the world premiere of the hilarious From Brooklyn to Boca comes to The Studio at Mizner Park in Boca Raton from January 9 through January 19. The cast is from New York to Miami.
“The Sopranos” meet “The Goldbergs” on stage in this humorous two-act fish-out-of-water comedy. From Brooklyn to Boca centers around the Rifiutos, a Brooklyn couple, Regina and Frank, and their son, Carmine. Regina’s mobster husband, Frank, has decided to rat on his crime family, so Regina reluctantly agrees to relocate real family to Boca Raton through the Federal Witness Protection Program. They move from shady Brooklyn to sunny Boca Raton, where the not-so-perfect Italian Catholic family struggles to blend in now as a near-perfect Jewish family.
The cast of 16 includes some of South Florida’s best comedic talent from New York to cities in Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties. Miami’s Alex Alonso plays ‘Fuggedaboudit’ Frank opposite Boca Raton’s Sharon Pfeiffer’s Regina. Their son is played by Kalel Carrera from Davie who, although only 12 years old, is already a veteran of the stage. The mobsters are played to the hilt by Pompano Beach’s Vincent Prestigiacomo (Big Sal); Benjamin Giordano (Joey ‘Bag A Laundry’) from Rocky Point, New York and a member of the LGBTQ community; Kevin Wilson (Mikey ‘The Bat’) from Palm Bay; and Al Giordano (Vinny) from Lake Worth.
Every character has a unique role in unraveling the plot with a surprising twist. Delray Beach residents include Michael Blacksburg who plays Rabbi Rabinowitz, Bob Sharkey as Father O’Neill and Federal Marshal, Agent Viso, played by Roy Lynam. The ‘lisping’ New York lawyer is played by Nina Poulos from Davie. Boca Raton resident Leslie Kandel, Fort Lauderdale resident Stephanie Manner, Boynton Beach resident Jamie Mattocks and Fort Lauderdale resident Christian Cooper are seasoned actors who will steal the audience’s hearts in supporting roles, each in their own distinctive way. Miami Gardens resident and rising star Cameron Holder, a member of the LGBTQ community, plays Dani.
From Brooklyn to Boca was penned by local playwrights, Sharon Pfeiffer of Boca Raton and Deni B. Sher of Weston, a produced screenwriter. “This is a comedy unlike anything else we’ve ever seen,” said Sher.
Sher met Pfeiffer at a reading of Sher’s latest script. “That was the light-bulb moment for me,” said Pfeiffer. “I relayed my concept to Sher, and she made me an offer I couldn’t refuse to write the script. We hope this makes its way to the silver screen.”
This comedic story is told from a woman’s point of view, as only two talented playwrights, originally from up north, could tell it. Regina’s world is full of genuine lovable characters, comedic plots and unexpected twists.
Italians are involved in full force including Al Giordano, Pfeiffer, Prestigiacomo, Wilson, Benjamin Giordano and Cravero Pemberton.
From Brooklyn to Boca debuts with a VIP Opening Night and champagne reception on Friday, January 10. Tickets to the VIP Opening Night are $100 per person. Through January 19, performances are Thursdays to Sundays at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances on Wednesday, January 15 and Saturdays and Sundays are at 2 p.m. Tickets to shows start at $45 and are available to purchase at https://www.ticketmaster.com/from-brooklyn-to-boca-tickets/artist/3261969.
From Brooklyn to Boca is produced by Walk the Walk Productions.

Opening in Miami on December 18th, visitors will travel on a timeline of The Nova Music Festival that took place on October 7th telling the story of the events on that dreadful day. A carefully-crafted mosaic of information, evidence, and emotion. The remains of joy, which now serves as bleak evidence of the sharp contrast between revered values and the cruel sting of the reality of that day. Walk through the winding path from the depths of pain and loss to the threshold of action, the healing and the hope of the community. The events on that black Saturday will be presented as a shocking contrast between light and darkness, good and evil, that is relevant to the entire world. The installation will create a sacred space echoing the weight of the victims’ and survivors’ memories, surrounded by remains salvaged from the festival grounds. Visitors are invited to join a plea for the safe return of the hostages who are still held in captivity by Hamas terrorists. Beyond the brutality and evil that occurred on October 7, the exhibition will capture the enduring spirit of the Tribe of Nova with the installation of the healing room. This sanctuary is intended for visitors to mend their spirits, reflect, and find solace after bearing witness to the harrowing events of The Nova Music Festival. Hanging tall and bright is the hopeful plea that “We will dance again”. For more information, visit novaexhibition.com or follow @novaexhibition.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 33301

“Yakne Seminoli,” New Works by Seminole Artists Erica Deitz and Brian Zepeda, celebrates Native American History Month (November) and beyond at History Fort Lauderdale. This collaboration with the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum will feature fine art and photography reflecting themes of leadership and respect. The exhibit at the New River Inn History Museum runs through January 5.

Born on the Winnebago Indian Reservation, Erica Deitz is a member of the Seminole Tribe of Florida on her mother’s side and Winnebago and Ojibway heritage on her father’s side. Her work offers an indigenous perspective in a variety of art mediums in a way that is accessible to a wide audience. Deitz’s passion to express herself through art began at the age of three as she painted with accomplished Native American artist Jo M. North, her mother. At the age of 10, Deitz entered her first major art contest and received a bronze medal for her work from the International Children’s Art Exhibition in Tokyo, Japan. She has continued to win awards for her artwork throughout her career. Deitz’s work is showcased in both solo and group exhibitions across the world, including the permanent collection in the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. and in the Lowe Art Museum in Miami. Several pieces of her art have been displayed alongside fellow Seminole Tribal artists in the “Seminole Art Scene from Frontlines,” “Patchwork Mosaic: An Indigenous Gathering of Seminole Masterworks,” and “Circle of Unity.” These exhibitions were a centerpiece of the History Fort Lauderdale Museum’s Native American Heritage Month celebration. In addition, one of Dietz’s original acrylic paintings was selected as cover art for the June 2021 internationally circulated magazine, Indian Gaming Magazine.

Brian Zepeda became serious about learning photography in 1997 while employed at the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum. During his time there, he captured various items to send to interested collectors and institutes. His talents don’t end with his camera; his skills also include beadwork, woodcarving, silversmithing, leather smithing, building Chickees and more. Esteemed institutions and galleries have requested his beadwork as well as photography. Along with being a photographer and artist, Zepeda is a Seminole Tribe of Florida council/board liaison.

Entry to the exhibit is free with general admission – $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is always free for members, military and children ages six and under. Tickets are available online at http://bit.ly/HistoryFortLauderdaleTickets.

History Fort Lauderdale is proud to host a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. It seeks to bring awareness to the community through both traveling exhibits and multiple permanent exhibits including “Women Trailblazers,” “Fort Lauderdale – the Early Years,” “The African American Experience,” “Fashion & Musical Theatre,” “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts: the story of boatbuilding along the New River,” Seminole Arts & Culture,” “New River Archaeology,” and “Take PRIDE, a retrospective on LGBTQ life in South Florida.” The nonprofit museum also hosts an artists’ collective collaborative space.

“Yakne Seminoli” is sponsored by the following funds at the Community Foundation of Broward: Jan and Ed Crocker Unrestricted Fund, Leo M. and Alice J. Rutten Fund and The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation Broward Community Fund. Additional funding is provided, in part, by Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward County Cultural Council and Visit Lauderdale. Additional support is provided by Seminole Tribe of Florida, Inc.

Miami Shores, Florida, 33161

Cost: Tickets start at $25 (plus fees)

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by Sebrina María Alfonso, returns to illuminate and inspire joy this holiday season with its beloved performances of Handel’s glorious Messiah (Part 1, the Christmas portion) culminating in the iconic “Hallelujah” chorus, and timeless uplifting Holiday Pops on December 8, at 4 p.m., at Barry University in Miami. SFSO will be joined by vocal soloists Rachel Blaustein (soprano), Lisa Marie Rogali (mezzo-soprano), Norman Shankle (tenor) and Rafael Porto (bass-baritone) and the South Florida Symphony Chorus.

Each season, orchestras the world over delight in performing one of classical music’s most well-known and uplifting masterworks. Jonathan Kandell of Smithsonian magazine writes, “A musical rite of the holiday season, the Baroque-era oratorio still awes listeners 250 years after the composer’s death.” In 1789, Mozart posthumously paid Handel the supreme compliment of reorchestrating Messiah but even Mozart confessed himself to be humble in the face of Handel’s genius describing his orchestrations: “When he chooses, he strikes like a thunderbolt.” In 1823, Beethoven proclaimed Handel to be the ‘greatest’ composer that ever lived.

SFSO’s 2024 holiday program will open with a selection of Holiday Pops festive favorites including “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” “Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire),” “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” “Ocho Kandalikas,” “Ave Maria” (Schubert), and “Dreidel Song.” Audiences are also invited to sing along to a special medley of cherished classics – “Jingle, Bells,” “Silent Night,” “Joy to the World” and more.

Per tradition, SFSO will close the joyous evening with Part I of Handel’s Messiah culminating with the iconic “Hallelujah” chorus as sung by the South Florida Symphony Chorus, made-up of seasoned chorale singers and community talent, directed by Dr. Giselle Elgarresta Rios. Rios and Maestra Alfonso collaborated to create the South Florida Symphony Chorus in 2019, which made its debut at the Beethoven 250th celebration in February of 2020.

Now in its 27th season, SFSO invites audiences to a tantalizing lineup of Icons & Rebels performances featuring upcoming works by Mozart, Strauss and Berlioz, plus an eagerly anticipated orchestra premiere of Bernstein’s satirical masterpiece Candide. The concerts will take place in Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Key West.

From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence by inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres. This season’s popular collaborations have included performances with ARRIVAL From Sweden: The Music of ABBA and of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, featuring the iconic film screened live with audio and musical accompaniment.

Tickets for Handel’s Messiah start at $25 (plus fees) for the December 8 performance at Barry University’s Shepard & Ruth K. Broad Performing Arts Center (11300 NE 2nd Ave in Miami Shores). Order online at southfloridasymphony.org/handels-messiah or via phone at (954) 522-8445. Student tickets and group rates are also available by calling (954) 522-8445 or emailing info@southfloridasymphony.org.

The artwork – spanning over 12 feet high and 24 feet long, made from 20,000 pounds of stainless steel – is inspired by the game of jacks. The “X” of the sculpture, a jack (aka “love jack”) with crossed arms, which signifies “love” in sign language, represents the four pillars of equality, unity, peace and love. The “O” is represented by a globe, bringing humanity together as one. Joining “XO World” on Lincoln Road is “Dream Machine” by visual artist Rubem Robierb. The life-size sculptural wings, representing the materialization of our innermost wishes and deep-rooted desire for our dreams to come true, will be on display through April 2025.

Seminar About Inspire® Therapy for Sleep Apnea 11/13/24

Seminar About Inspire® Therapy for Sleep Apnea
Wednesday, 11/13/2024-, 04:00 pm-05:00 pm
Holy Cross Health Pulmonary Rehab Center
4725 N. Federal Highway,
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, 33308
Website
Cost: Free

Do you suffer from sleep apnea and long for a peaceful night’s sleep and solution to your snoring? Holy Cross Medical Group pulmonologist Ronald Scott, M.D. will speak about Inspire®, an FDA-approved obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment option for people who cannot use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the treatment and ask questions.

OSA affects 22 million Americans. When left untreated, OSA can cause vehicle and workplace accidents, worsening mood and memory, stroke, heart attack and even death. It occurs when the airway collapses during sleep and blocks the flow of oxygen to the brain. The brain senses a lack of oxygen and wakes the body up just long enough to take a breath, then falls back asleep. This cycle repeats throughout the night and causes poor, disruptive sleep.

Inspire works inside the body with a patient’s natural breathing process to treat sleep apnea. Mild stimulation opens the airway during sleep, allowing oxygen to flow naturally. The patient uses a small handheld remote to turn Inspire on before bed and off when they wake up.

The Inspire system is implanted during a short, outpatient procedure. The system is placed under the skin of the neck and chest through two small incisions. Most patients return home the same day and take over-the-counter pain medications to manage pain as needed.

The safety and efficacy of Inspire was evaluated during the STAR clinical trial. Five-year STAR trial outcomes show patients using Inspire experience significant reductions in sleep apnea events and significant improvements in quality-of-life measures. There have been over 250 peer-reviewed publications on Inspire. These publications show results consistent with those seen in the STAR trial.

The show recreates the journey of Mary and Joseph, resplendent in African costumes, to Bethlehem, accompanied by a rousing repertoire of spirituals. The combined African-American viewpoint and gospel music make Black Nativity a truly unique and entertaining theatrical experience.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present a free book signing and meet & greet with architect, photographer and historic preservation consultant Arthur Jay Marcus, author of The Architecture of Whimsy: Mid-20th-Century Architecture in South Florida. He will be available to meet guests and autograph copies of his book on Thursday, November 14, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. His appearance is part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed.

The Architecture of Whimsy: Mid-20th-Century Architecture in South Florida is a lexicon examining the quixotic architectural expressions fund on select Mid-20th-Century Modern commercial buildings in South Florida. Showcasing the work of 13 noted architects from Miami Beach to Fort Lauderdale, Marcus highlights the decorative details and gestures – swooping overhangs, brise soleil, cheese holes and arches and screening – that expressed the era’s shiny optimism and the region’s carefree resort culture. With brief biographies of architects and street maps pinpointing the location of each building, this book offers tourists, architects, history buffs and preservationists a new context and appreciation for these works of art, many of which are endangered. The book is available on Amazon.

Architecture and photography have been Marcus’ lifelong passions from an early age. While maintaining an architectural studio in South Beach for 24 years prior to moving to Fort Lauderdale, Marcus continued to take photographs of South Florida’s architectural environment. His practice currently specializes in historic preservation consulting. A native of Philadelphia, Marcus graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Temple University and a Master of Architecture degree from Carnegie Mellon University.

Drinks and light bites will be provided. Guests may RSVP at https://bit.ly/FloridaScribesMarcus2024.
