Join WBHI Pink Walk 2022— 5K Run and Walk to Raise Funds and Help Beat the Odds of Breast Cancer

The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative (WBHI) 6th Annual Pink Walk returns this year with its 5K Run and Walk hosted by Miami Dade College at the North Campus. Leading into Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this college-wide partnership for Pink Walk 2022 invites the community and their families to raise funds for breast cancer disease prevention and early detection.

Runners, walkers, and joggers can help transform and save lives, one step at a time, while supporting at risk women, college students and low-income populations with the resources necessary to help beat the odds of breast cancer.

Supporters of the WBHI 6th Annual Pink Walk can also participate virtually in the 5K Run and Walk around their neighborhood, or at the park, beach, or other convenient outdoor location.

All participants are also empowered to play an active role in helping to transform and save lives by setting up a personal fundraising page. Special swag will be awarded when participants raise $50, $100, and more, helping WBHI get to its $100,000 goal.

A leader in fostering healthy communities, WBHI was recently designated the first official Florida license plate designed to support Disease Prevention & Early Detection. Pre-sale vouchers are available at flbreasthealth.com/licenseplate to provide increased education and awareness relating to early detection, prevention, and screening of breast and heart issues.

All proceeds will benefit The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative for its grassroots community services including early detection, health education, care coordination and patient navigation.

The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative Hosts Mammogram Screenings on National Pink Day June 23rd

Summer Breast Cancer Awareness On-Site at Fresco y Más in Hialeah
Provides Breast & Heart Screenings at No Cost to the General Public

On this National Pink Day, June 23rd, The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative (WBHI)— a leader in disease prevention and early detection community outreach— reminds women that ‘You Matter, Get Your Mammogram’, ensuring self-care this summer with timely breast and heart screenings.

Women are encouraged to contact WBHI to schedule their mammograms at no cost by calling 305-825-4081.

Valued partner Jackson Health System will also be on-site providing heart screenings, presenting a more comprehensive preventive care approach. As WBHI’s collaborating partner that cares deeply about the community, Fresco y Más in Hialeah will host the second annual breast and heart screenings event to be held on National Pink Day, June 23rd by appointment only.

Macy’s adds some glamour to the day while supporting good health for all by providing gift cards to everyone who completes a screening at the event and offering raffle drawings for specialty fragrance baskets.

Everyone near and far can get involved. Can’t make it to Hialeah? Show your support of the campaign by sharing pink inspired photos and messages on social media using the hashtag #WBHIPinkDay and tagging Facebook @TheWBHI and Instagram @WBHI on National Pink Day, June 23rd for awareness and remembrance.

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime; and the death rate has increased. Delayed, or missed cancer screenings could mean diagnosis at a later stage with a poorer prognosis. With pink being the color representing breast cancer, WBHI’s Summer Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign on National Pink Day provides access to critical resources that help beat the odds of breast cancer. In addition, WBHI will present risk reduction strategies for heart disease which is the leading cause of death for women.

“Our summer breast cancer campaign on National Pink Day reminds women that ‘You Matter. Get Your Mammogram’, and practice disease prevention and early detection,” states Andrea Ivory, WBHI’s Founder and Executive Director. “Breast cancer is diagnosed year-round, but the good news is that early detection and disease deterrent lifestyles help transform and saves lives”.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run presented by Turkish Airlines, a three-circuit 5K (3.1 mile) run/walk with events in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Miami, kicks-off in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at 6:45 p.m.

Now in its 24th year, “Fort Lauderdale’s Largest Office Party” is open to employees of businesses, corporations, government agencies, financial institutions and non-profits – regardless of company size – and incorporates a special competition to award the overall men’s, women’s and co-ed teams in 18 different industries, as well as a t-shirt contest.

Beginners can “ease into exercise” with friends, gain inspiration and motivation to continue walking and running to improve overall health, while competitive runners have the opportunity to shine amongst their co-workers and lead the corporate team to victory.

The event will once again also offer a virtual component for team members, allowing them to complete their distance and submit their finish time on the same day as the in-person event. Results for the Run from Home run will be posted online at www.MercedesBenzCorporateRun.com.

As part of the tri-county race circuit, $1 per participant of the Fort Lauderdale run will benefit United Way.

In just a few short years, everything has changed about how we get our information. It wasn’t that long ago that a few nightly news broadcasts and our local newspaper provided the grist for the American conversation. Diverse groups of citizens were largely working off of the same set of facts – screened for accuracy by editors who were responsible by professional ethics to get the facts right (or print a retraction).

This new media environment is causing political fury and hardening cultural divides. We can agree there is a flood of biased content out there, and some would argue the news is biased. Increasingly, people are frequently seeking out news, editorial, and other content that is aligned to their beliefs, and now more than ever, there are more options for finding that content that leans in a particular political direction.

So, join us for our second dinner of the season as we debate the difference between media, news and information. We’ll touch base on how it might be possible to recognize the most flagrant cases of bias in the behavior of reporters and experts, how we can get out under social media’s influence on what we see and what is re-enforced to us as well as the role advertising and special interest groups play. Ultimately, we’ll debate what the loss of trust means for us as individuals and for our country.

Panelists:
Evelyn Baker – Executive Producer/Univision Communications Inc.
Frank J. Guzman – Broward Bureau Chief/WSVN-TV
Justin Sayfie – Publisher/Sayfie Review and Partner/Ballard Partners

In celebration of Black History Month, History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “60 Years of Black Art,” a fine art exhibit featuring works for show and sale from Dillard Center for the Arts’ Advanced Placement (AP) students, from February 1 – 28. The exhibit, curated by instructor Celestin Joseph, represents historical and contemporary themes of equality from the perspective of students at the very school that was instrumental in overturning segregation laws in the City of Fort Lauderdale 51 years ago. The exhibit will be open to the public at the New River Inn building of History Fort Lauderdale and will be accessible as a digital experience on History Fort Lauderdale’s YouTube channel.

“60 Years of Black Art,” will feature a variety of styles and mediums reflecting African American culture, arts and entertainment and the ongoing struggle for inclusion and acceptance. Featured pieces in the exhibition include works by AP students Angel Pena, Naima Cornelius, Lewis James, Jennifer Turner and Tay Small, among others.

Joseph received his master’s in fine arts in painting from the University of Pennsylvania. He received a bachelor’s in fine arts, cum laude, from the University of Hartford as a painting major, with an art history minor, and concentrations in printmaking and graphic design studies. Joseph also received a prestigious Yale/Norfolk Art and Music Scholarship to further his studies. For the past 14 years, Galleria has proudly hosted this high energy event which showcases a stellar roster of prominent men who are making a positive impact in our community. Supporters can be there in-person or choose to vote for their favorite man of style with proceeds benefiting 12 respected local charities that impact the quality of life for those they serve and the community at large.

The 12 influential South Florida men who have graciously donated their time and resources to worthy causes and will work the runway on behalf of their participating nonprofits are:

• Eamonn Caulfield, VP Transformation Services, Ultimate Software (FLITE Center)
• Steve Climie, President, South Aviation Group (Jack & Jill Children’s Center)
• Rory Cooksey, Director of Growth, WheelHouse IT (HANDY)
• Tim Curtin, Executive Director of Community Services, Memorial Healthcare System (Art and Culture Center Hollywood)

• Reggie Zachariah, Shareholder, Greenberg Traurig (Kids in Distress)

As an added twist, the 2020 men of style honorees will also take a walk on the runway since they never got to experience the excitement of a live event. Last year, the voting challenge replaced the in-person event and raised nearly $68,000.

Guests will be treated to gourmet selections from Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurants, Seasons 52, The Capital Grille, Moksha Indian Brasserie, Lips Fort Lauderdale, Cucina Caruso and others to be announced. An open bar and live entertainment are also on the menu. The highlight of the evening will be the fashion runway show that will feature the Men of Style honorees wearing the season’s top trending styles from Macy’s and Dillard’s. An afterparty will be held at Blue Martini.

Event sponsors and contributors include South Florida Ford as the title sponsor, Signature Grand as a presenting sponsor, and supporting sponsors Macy’s, Dillard’s, Memorial Healthcare System, GPR | Goodman Public Relations, City & Shore magazine, OutClique, Blue Martini, Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurants, Seasons 52 and The Capital Grille.

In-person event tickets are $150 per person which includes complimentary valet parking. Tickets are only available through any of the 12 participating charities. Online voting, $25 per vote, is available at www.galleriamall-fl.com/events/men-of-style. Online supporters are encouraged to vote for their favorite man/charity by noon on December 2. Online votes and ticket sales count toward the announcement of the winning man of style who will be announced at the live event and receive an additional financial contribution for his designated charity.

Explore the whimsical world of French-Lebanese artist RACHEL K in her first US solo exhibition at the W Miami during Miami Art Week 2021.

Known for her larger-than-life sculptures and art pieces combining papier-mâché, paint, fiber collage and tiny vintage toys from all over the world, Rachel K’s art is a nod to our childhood fantasies and pop culture icons.

But there is no “toying around” for the Winner of the Best International Solo Artist at the World Art Dubai Awards 2017. Her latest pièce de résistance Wings of Joy is a whopping 100 x 45” sculpture that will have its debut reveal exclusively for this event. If this won’t have Instagramers flocking for a photo op, Rachel K’s sculptures on showcase – think Marge Simpson, Mickey Mouse and Super Mario Flower – will make art collectors bid for a joyful addition to their homes.

Sunday September 26 from 4-7 PM: Global Arts Project and the Collins Park Neighborhood Association present a FREE concert in beautiful Collins Park, Collins Ave and 22 Street, Miami Beach.

Headed by director Germán Pinelli and featuring the incredible vocal talents of singers Ana Paez and Tirso Luis Paez, Los 3 de la Habana has hit the musical ground running, creating what has often been called “a sexy Cuban music experience born from Latin roots” that’s “super-vibrant and full of musical joy.” To its credit, the group has recorded six albums and is responsible for ear-catching hits like “No te Pases de la Raya,” “La Perdida,” “Luchando,” “Route 66,” “Santa is Coming to Town,” “Boy from New York City” and “One Way,” but what makes Los 3 de la Habana’s sound so very unique is its novel characteristics – something fundamentally different from what is traditionally aired on modern commercial radio.

The popularity of this incredibly talented orchestral act is surpassing even what its own founding members could have imagined, what with the incredibly positive feedback on Los 3 de la Habana’s YouTube channel and the sheer amount of download activity via Apple Music and Spotify. Indeed, this is the consummate embodiment of Cuban music fused with the power of Latin roots…and for the relentlessly hard-working members of Los 3 de la Habana, this foray is only just beginning.

3:30 -5 DJ LEO will be spinning for Fitness by Fernando Salsa Lessons!!!! During the show we will feature Professional Salsa Dancers to add to the fun! Food vendors will be onsite! Come and enjoy the Bass Museum Family day! Free admission and childrens activities!!

The show will also be livestreamed on Global Arts Project’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® (MSABC) presented by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino – Hollywood is holding their Making Strides Walk on October 23, 2021, at Huizenga Plaza in Ft. Lauderdale. Making Strides has united communities, companies, and individuals across the country in the fight to end breast cancer for more than two decades. Michele Alter, a 21-year breast cancer survivor and Brittany Zinn, both with the Craig Zinn Automotive Group, are this year’ co-chairs. The two are determined to make this a successful fundraiser. Organizers want everyone to know that even if a person cannot attend in person, the success of this event will depend on enthusiastic individuals who commit to raise funds, in addition to generous donors who will support those participants. The in-person event will keep federal, state, and local health guidelines in mind. As the fall season approaches, event-based decisions may be made to best meet the health and safety needs of everyone involved.

In 2020, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Broward conducted a drive-thru with 174 teams. The event benefited from the support of more than 1,000 participants, local businesses, and organizations, representing various industries. It ranked #1 in the State of Florida with a fundraising revenue of $429,000, and 7th overall of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events in the US. The money raised went to breast cancer research and programs geared towards both men and women. According to the American Cancer Society journal, a Cancer Journal for Clinicians, there will be an estimated 1.9 million new cancer cases diagnosed in 2021 and 608,570 cancer deaths in the United States. That number may be higher given the COVID spike. It’s believed that people with active cancer may be more susceptible to COVID-19, because of their impaired immune system. That’s why the American Cancer Society® Fort Lauderdale wants people to start fundraising between now and October. People can fuel the fight against breast cancer by downloading the American Cancer Society FUNdraising App to their phones. This will allow people to register for the October event and begin asking

To register, go to www.MakingStridesWalk.org/BrowardFL to join the walk by signing up as an individual or team. Be sure to download the app to your phone and link the dashboard to Facebook. Fun Fact: Those that connect their fundraiser to FB, raise seven times more money.

To learn more about the Making Strides of Broward Presented by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino-Hollywood or for other information, call 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.MakingStridesWalk.org/BrowardFL. It’s America’s big day and we’re here for it. It’s time to take a break from the grill this year and join Wynwood’s favorite bar and restaurant, Le Chick. Known for its true world-class burger experience and cozy bar vibe, Le Chick is the perfect place to celebrate this special holiday. Fourth of July calls for casual, crowd-pleasing dishes, and nothing says summer like a good ol’ burger, especially an award-winning one. The menu at Le Chick is all about elevated comfort food, so of course, their burgers hit the spot. While beef patties and American cheese are a classic combination, Le Chick’s homemade rolls, and special sauce sure make this burger an extravagant, and must-try staple item from their menu. In celebration of the Fourth of July, guests can enjoy a sinful, juicy burger such as their fan-favorite Royale with Cheese or the Double Dirty, with Dry-aged Brisket 3oz double patties, bacon, cheddar, fried egg, tomato, lettuce, house pickles, secret sauce. Wash it all down with Le Chick’s hand-crafted cocktails or beer selection to top off your meal.

About Timbalive:

Timbalive is one of the largest and most successful groups of Timba in the United States and the world. The unique band sound, sophisticated production techniques, and a spectacular live show are second to none in the Latin Music scene. The band was created and burst onto South Florida’s music scene in August 2008, by Leo Garcia (timbales & director), offering the best of Cuban music with a mix of different rhythms from around the world. All the band’s members are highly trained musicians from the most prestigious music schools in Cuba and come from well-known groups from the Island.

Their first album, “From Miami a la Habana ” created one of the most unexpected successes in the Latin Music History in the United States. Through their vast discography, Cuban & Latin music hierarchy have shared studio sessions and stages with them. Such music giants names include: Amaury Gutierrez , Willy Chirino , Albita Rodriguez, Issac Delgado, Manolin (El Médico de la Salsa), Grupo Afrocuba, Carlos Manuel, Luis Enrique, Rey Ruiz, Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz, Pablo FG, Clave y Guaguanco, Oscar de Leon, Descemer Bueno, Mayito Rivera, Los 4, Pedrito Calvo, Roberton “Van Van” and Maykel Fonts among many others.

Timbalive has toured Europe, Mexico, Canada, South America, and multiple States in the US, making this band a reference for dancers and Timba lovers in several continents. Songs from their first album such as “El Dinero”, “Ave Maria Que – Calor”, and Como Miami No Hay Na” are still played by DJs in radio stations and night clubs worldwide, fulfilling Leo’s vision of having an international Timba band based in Miami.Twelve years later and five albums, this high-octane ten-member group kept enjoying great success among the Salsa circuit across Europe, South America, Cuba, and the U.S.

About Nic & N’Taya:

Nic & N’Taya is one of only a few bands that have managed successfully to produce a creative body of work in the extremely difficult Cuban Music environment of South Florida. Their last two critically acclaimed albums “#EstoEsUnMisil” y “Tu No Querias Changüí? Coje Changüí !” has been a testament that Timba y Changüí is alive and thriving in Miami.
Changüí is a style of Cuban music that originated in the early 19th century in the eastern region of Guantánamo Province, specifically Baracoa. It arose in the sugar cane refineries and in the rural communities populated by slaves. Changüí combines the structure and elements of Spain’s canción and the Spanish guitar with African rhythms and percussion instruments of Bantu origin. Changüí is considered a predecessor of son montuno (the ancestor of modern salsa), which has enjoyed tremendous popularity in Cuba throughout the 20th century. Timba is a Cuban genre of music based on popular Cuban music along with salsa, American funk/R&B, and the strong influence of Afro-Cuban folkloric music.

Timba rhythm sections differ from their salsa counterparts because timba emphasizes the bass drum, which is not used in salsa bands.
Here’s a sparkling high-voltage band lead by singer Nick “N’Taya ” Martinez who seems to have successfully channeled the spirit and drive of the Timba & Changüí genres to a new generation of Salsa dancers. N’Taya has created a thoroughly enjoyable sound that is perfectly suited for the dance club or your next Cuban or Latin party. Many Miami bands in the past have gotten our hopes up, only to break up. Hopefully, this one will stick around for a while. Stay tuned!

Make Music Miami, the annual celebration of music on the summer solstice, returns this year on Monday, June 21 with dozens of free, virtual and in-person outdoor concerts, music lessons, jam sessions and other exciting music-making events, spotlighting music’s power to connect, comfort, unite and uplift. Miami is among the 90+ U.S. cities hosting major celebrations, in what has become a worldwide phenomenon observed by hundreds of millions of people in over 1,000+ cities in 120 countries. Safety protocols will be in place following local requirements, including mask-wearing, social distancing and limited capacities and group sizes.
Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music Miami celebrates and promotes the natural music maker in all of us, regardless of ability. Reimagining their cities and towns as stages, every kind of musician – from bucket drummers and opera singers to hip-hop artists and marching bands – pours onto streets, parks, plazas, porches, rooftops, gardens, beaches and other public spaces to celebrate, create and share their music with friends, neighbors and strangers. Due to the pandemic, last year’s celebration was largely virtual, but many in-person events will return in 2021.

For more detailed information, visit makemusicmiami.org. Finalized programming will be posted here the week of the event.

The Betsy Hotel Announces Events to Honor
Juneteenth 2021
South Beach Arts and Culture Hotel honors African American Emancipation and Excellence
in two events presented with the Miami Chamber of Commerce
and Florida International University

Arts Celebration LIVE Event on June 19
From 6 PM to 11 PM, it’s LIVE JAZZ in the Lobby of The Betsy Hotel.
From 9 PM to 9:30 PM, it’s LIVE POETRY and MUSIC at The Betsy Poetry Rail,

Community Panel/Conversation (Zen and the Art of … Juneteenth) Via ZOOM
The program features community leaders discussing the history and meaning of Juneteenth.

MIAMI BEACH, FLA.—June 1, 2021—The Betsy-South Beach Hotel (The Betsy) announces two events to honor Juneteenth 2021. Both events are presented in partnership with the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and Florida International University Miami Beach Urban Studios. No tickets are required and the programs are free and open to the public.

Juneteenth — a combination of “June” and “nineteenth” – recognizes the date that formerly enslaved African Americans were informed that they were finally free. Though African Americans have long celebrated Juneteenth, the National Museum of African American History and Culture notes ‘this monumental event remains largely unknown to most Americans.”
Juneteenth celebrations remind us that freedom and racial equality have always been and continue to be a hard-fought battle for African Americans. Community Juneteenth celebrations will inspire honest conversation about societal inequities that continue to threaten and devalue the lives of African Americans and also provide a forum to celebrate African American excellence.

Join Orchestra Miami as we celebrate the 100th birthday of groundbreaking Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla! On Argentinean Independence Day, Friday, July 9th at 8 PM, join Orchestra Miami as we celebrate one of Argentina’s most famous citizens with an all-Piazzolla program at Miami Beach’s North Beach Bandshell. Joining the orchestra will be special guests from Buenos Aires, guitar & vocal duo Rosa Incaica, and Bandoneón master David Alsina, conducted by guest conductor Andrés Cárdenes.
Orchestra Miami’s tribute begins with Piazzolla’s Libertango, a statement of “nuevo tango” (the name fuses the words “libertad” [liberty] with tango, symbolizing the break from traditional tango to nuevo tango) in an arrangement by Thomas Kalb. Bandoneónista David Alsina joins guitarist Pablo González Jazey in the Double Concerto for Bandoneón and Guitar, followed by David Alsina’s arrangement of Histoire du Tango, for Bandoneón, Guitar and bass. Following intermission, vocalist Annelise Skovmand joins Pablo González Jazey and the orchestra for a selection of Piazzolla’s most recognizable tangos. Maestro Andrés Cárdenes leads Orchestra Miami in this unforgettable evening.
In-person tickets start at just $19 and online livestreaming tickets in high-definition or virtual reality are available starting at just $5! For tickets and more information, please visit https://www.orchestramiami.org/piazzolla, or call (305) 274-2103.
