An Age-Old Fairytale Awakens with New Perspective at World Premiere in South Florida During Miami Art Week; Then Travels to New York’s Upper West Side Beacon Theatre

The world premiere of Sleeping Beauty Dreams, a contemporary art exploration of the age-old fable brought to life by Magic Reality Group, will debut at the Adrienne Arsht Center during Miami Art Week. The EDM-influenced performance explores one of the most iconic stories ever told, Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty,” and will showcase the first-ever fusion of live contemporary ballet dance with 3D digital avatars projected on-stage in real-time. The Miami showings of this story never told before takes place at the Ziff Ballet Opera House at Adrienne Arsht Center. The performance then visits New York City the following weekend at the Beacon Theatre.

The legend of Sleeping Beauty has been retold by masters since the 14th century, but no one has explored what the princess was dreaming while she slept for 100 years. Global prima ballerina, Diana Vishneva, performing as Princess Aurora and Marcelo Gomes, as Prince Peter are brought together in a fusion of dance, music, art, and revolutionary 3D digital technology never seen on stage before. Artists joining Vishneva and Gomes include Tobias Gremmler and Bart Hess, with music by famed EDM pioneers, NOISIA, a Dutch trio whose music is featured on Hollywood blockbusters and works with some of the world’s biggest artists including Skrillex and deadmau5.

Sleeping Beauty Dreams is an unprecedented fusion of contemporary dance with state-of-the-art, real-time avatar-mapping projection technology and electronic music for a multi-dimensional scenic experience. This emerging technology allows the constantly transforming avatars of Sleeping Beauty Dreams to seamlessly replicate the dancers’ movements live, adding a whole new dimension to the world of live performance.

Discover an interpretation of what happened during the princess’ 100-year slumber in Miami at the Adrienne Arsht Center on December 7th and 8th at 8 p.m., tickets are available here. Likewise, the performance comes to New York at the Beacon Theatre on December 14th and 15th at 8 p.m. and tickets are available here.

RAW POP UP – Art Basel Week 2018
December 5th to December 9th
An abandoned department store comes alive
A 2-floor 43,000 sq ft multisensory experience
Tickets: http://bit.do/rawpopuptix

RAW POP UP is an interdisciplinary team and a collective of creators pioneering the Interactive Art Movement (IAM) through multisensory pop up experiences of art, music, technology, and performance art with lasting cultural impact.

Disrupting the “look-don’t-touch” boundaries found in the traditional art context, RAW POP UP encourages you to dive into new and ephemeral experiences where you actively influence art.

This edition of RAW POP UP takes place in a department store from a lost era in the heart of downtown Miami. Over 80 local and international creators, performers, and musicians will collaborate to transform a 43,000 sq ft department store for you to explore. Through immersive performances and interactive art installations you are asked to rethink your values and question your modern ways of living, inducing nostalgia of a time that has passed us.

After evaluating your values in our abandoned department store, find yourself in ALT_Future, a dystopian nightclub where the future is unknown, brought to life by live performances and DJs. How Deep Is The Ocean?

Modern Self-Discovery at Miami River Art Fair
December 3-5, 2018

Art Basel Miami Beach is one of the world’s most successful art events, which takes place at the same time as numerous satellite art fairs in the first week of December. In the heart of Miami Downtown, just a few Metromover stops away from the new Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), Miami River Art Fair reflects the urban landscape of Miami and responds to the city’s rapid growth as a cultural destination.

One of the exhibitors at Miami River Art Fair Dr. Barbara Aust-Wegemund, Director at Gallery AHC Projects (booth B1), is invited to curate the group show “How Deep is The Ocean?” Modern self-discovery in Philosophy and Arts. A curated group show with Pioneer Artists. About her concept and intention, the curator and art historian explains:

“The Romantic natural philosophers interpreted the sea as a source of life, continuing in the creation of modern criteria of ethical behavior, which culminates in a new bio-ethics and a new understanding of the sea. The curated exhibition is asking “How deep in the Ocean?” as a philosophical question. Ocean Philosophy delves into aesthetics – the sea as the symbol of the sublime – and modern self-discovery – the sea as a mirror of the soul. The exhibition invites to explore connections between Romantic and Modernity, real and (inner) journeys, identity, infinity and space.

Celebrating international emerging and established artists in Miami, the juried show presents original artworks by Louis Atelouis, Tracy L. Barwick, Khalilah Birdsong, Carole Kohler, Marianna Kupriyanova, KanKan Ramos-Lim, Claudia Mini and Sal Sidner.

Medellin: A City for Public Life,
Lecture by Jorge Pérez Jaramillo (Universidad de Santo Tomás, Medellin, Colombia)

Seen as an urban failure, Medellin was once plagued by violence and terrorism, deep social fractures, economic crisis, and a breakdown of democracy and the rule of law. Yet today the city stands as an inspiring example of overcoming urban ills. Jorge Pérez Jaramillo, Medellin’s former director of urban planning, offers a critical analysis of Medellin’s profound urban changes from the 1980 crisis until today, detailing the collective processes that, through strategic planning, led to increased local democracy, equity, and human development.

Jorge PEREZ-JARAMILLO is the Dean of the Santo Tomás University’ Faculty of Architecture and the former Chief Planner of the city of Medellín (2012-15), and deputy chief planner of the Medellin Metropolitan Area (2004-2008). Thanks to his work, the city was recognized as the Most Innovative City 2012 WSJ Citi ULI, Special Mention Lee Kwan Yew Prize 2014 Singapore, 100 Resilient Cities Rockefeller Foundation, and other many awards for its innovative initiatives. In 2017, he was Visiting Fellow at the Cambridge University King´s College, in the UK. He is currently writing a book on Medellín’s urban evolution.

A founding principal of METALAB, a multi-disciplinary design firm in Houston, Texas, Joe Meppelink pursues resiliency and sustainable technologies. In response to extreme conditions with a lack of grid power, hurricane force winds, and storm surge flooding, Meppelink and METALAB have invented and deployed a range of tactical and technological responses. These projects range from a containerized, solar-powered, off-grid field office to modular farming and growing systems to elevated hurricane-resistant housing systems. While each of these addresses a critical issue, Meppelink finds that a similar ethos informs other projects (such as public parks and a fleet of river boats) in unexpected ways.

Disasters, such as hurricanes, as well as the doom of climate change and sea level rise have fostered new thinking about urban planning, particularly in cities like Miami, Houston and New Orleans. There is a growing awareness that rebuilding must be sustainable in the long term in order to protect communities from dislocation and, ultimately, destruction. This panel includes practitioners and thinkers who are at the cutting edge of this booming field in various cities, as well as local Miami leaders. The goal of the roundtable is to exchange experiences and together envision the ideal city in the era of sea-level rise and climate instability.

How can cities tackle climate change and inequality at the same time? Surprisingly, research shows that guaranteeing housing affordability is key to effective climate policies in cities. Considering the cities of Sao Paulo, New York and others comparatively, Aldana finds that urban climate policies have failed because of a general political inability to address race and class inequalities.

What can architecture and urban planning do to mitigate racial inequality? Do we still believe that residential racial integration is the solution? Miami’s lines of racial segregation have barely moved since the Civil Rights movement. On the one hand, incoming immigrants settled in neighborhoods according to preexisting demographics, while residential programs crafted in the aftermath of the 1968 Fair Housing Act to promote integration were increasingly defunded. On the other, new infrastructure projects, along with real estate interests, reconfigured the city’s geography in some areas. As a result, black neighborhoods experienced a decline. How can new “placemaking” initiatives, largely spearheaded by communities and the nonprofit sector, contribute to overcoming inequality?

Recently, “placemaking” has become a buzzword among policy makers, foundations, and community activists. As public institutions reduce their involvement in the arts, culture, and education, private stakeholders have stepped in to address communities’ needs for inclusive public spaces. These spaces, ranging from small children playgrounds to entire arts districts, are ideally conceived in dialogue among communities, public policy agents, interested businesses and non-profits, and others. This panel will discuss how to activate “creative placemaking” initiatives, and how to balance communities’ mobilization (or lack thereof), the top-down approaches of policy-makers, and the profit drives of urban developers.

DowntownMiami’s History of Development
Description: #MiamiWalks is part of a global walking movement known as Jane’s Walk, and is proud to be an anchor initiative of the 2018 #10DaysofConnection!

Our neighborhood exploration of Downtown Miami will be led by Shaan Patel, a trained Architect who’s working as a developer, and is passionate about city planning. He’s also the creator and writer of Miami Grid, a local blog about Miami Urbanism. This walking tour will consider what the boundaries or arteries of Downtown Miami are, while delving into the area’s history of development. When looking at the western part of Downtown today, most do not know the history or changes that this segmented community has undergone. While learning about the Miami River, Flagler’s Railroad, and the introduction of I-95, this walking group will weave through a changing place to better understand why it is the way it is, and where it’s going. Stops along the way include: Historic Lyric Theater, Miami Central, and and Lummus Park. The tour will also end with free entry to HistoryMiami Museum’s “Street Traditions” exhibit!

Check out the piece that inspired this walk here: https://miami-grid.com/2017/03/23/highways-railways/

Accessibility: #MiamiWalks seeks to make this event as accessible as possible to individuals of all different abilities and needs. This walking tour in particular, will be kid-friendly and dog-friendly.
Contact: For questions or in need of additional accommodations, please send an email to celebratediversitymiami@gmail.com at least 24-hours in advance of the event.

Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts, Miami’s most eclectic performing arts series, closes its 2017-18 season with a gala event: Layali al-Andalus at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 12 at the Olympia Theater, featuring the National Arab Orchestra and special guests.

The Ojalá/ Inshallah season was named for the Spanish word for “I wish” and the Arabic phrase for “God willing” as a reminder of the Moorish impact on the Spanish language and Hispanic identity shared by so many greater Miami residents. This final performance, Layali al-Andalus, or “Andalusian Nights,” embodies the Arab-Hispanic connection, conjuring the oft romanticized historical place and time of cultural co-existence and exchange in an enchanting evening of Arab Classical music, flamenco and more.
Dedicated to performing and preserving the classical and contemporary traditions of Arab music, the 24-member National Arab Orchestra features violins and cellos alongside traditional instruments such as oud, qanun (zither), nay (reed flute) and a percussion section including riqq (Arab tambourine). The ensemble will be joined by esteemed Flamenco guitarist Jose Luis de la Paz, Flamenco dancer Niurca Marquez, and Flamenco singer Alejandro El Gambimbas (direct from Spain!); Arabic singers Marian Layousse, Abdallah Moussa, and Sephardic singer Susana Behar.

A pre-concert reception will celebrate the season, offering complimentary Mediterranean hors d’oeuvres and refreshments for all concert goers.

Tino Sehgal creates works that are constructed situations which question the traditional subject-object relationship of visual art, and in which the interaction between the visitor and the work takes a central position. Sehgal takes language, singing, dancing, and other modes of behavior as his artistic material, often generating immersive artworks that are felt more than they are seen. This Situation (2007) enables a conversation that throws into question our self-image as a society and our roles as individuals within that society.
Sehgal is a Berlin-based artist whose work has been widely shown internationally. He won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2013. Among many other places, Sehgal’s work has been exhibited at the Guggenheim in New York, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the 12th Havana Biennial, and the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo in Brazil.

This Situation is part of the Living Together Performance Series, a year-long cross-disciplinary series featuring performance art, installations, film and video screenings, readings, talks, and workshops, reflecting the cultural, social, and political realities of how we live now.

Long inspired by the cultural diversity and beauty of Miami, the city where he spent most of his life, acclaimed Cuban American poet Richard Blanco will read from his works during an evening cruise onboard the Miami Lady. As the boat sails on Biscayne Bay under the stars, past illuminated landmarks old and new, audiences will hear a poetry that grapples with the state of the world and our place in it, and demonstrates why Miami remains an incubator for artistic talent in many fields.

An influential poet and story teller, Richard Blanco invites audiences to reconnect to the heart of human experience. Born in Madrid to Cuban exiled parents and raised in Miami, he has created a body of work characterized by the negotiation of cultural identity and place. He is the author of the award-winning memoirs The Prince of Los Cocuyos: A Miami Childhood and For All of Us, One Today: An Inaugural Poet’s Journey; the poetry chapbooks Matters of the Sea, One Today, and Boston Strong; the poetry collections Looking for the Gulf Motel, Directions to the Beach of the Dead, and City of a Hundred Fires; a children’s book of his inaugural poem, “One Today,” illustrated by Dav Pilkey; and Boundaries, a collaboration with photographer Jacob Hessler. With Ruth Behar, he is co-creator of the blog Bridges to/from Cuba: Lifting the Emotional Embargo, which provides a cultural and artistic platform for sharing the real lives and complex emotional histories of thousands of Cubans across the globe. He has been a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow and received honorary doctorates from Macalester College, Colby College, and the University of Rhode Island. As an immigrant coming of age in a politically unstable Brazil, Anna Maria Maiolino searched for a new language to articulate everyday human existence. One of the most important artists of her generation, Maiolino’s multidisciplinary practice has always sought to connect art and life, to give structure to primordial experiences of language, self, and the body. The performance-installation Entrevidas (Between Lives), was originally conceived in 1981, during the period between the end of Brazil’s military dictatorship and its return to democracy. Spectators were invited to cross an obstacle course of hundreds of eggs on a cobbled street of Rio de Janeiro to experience feelings of uncertainty and risk, but also to imagine the resiliency of life and of new beginnings. Revisiting the installation today, the artist points to the precariousness and potential of the present moment.

Anna Maria Maiolino was born in Italy in 1942 and migrated to Brazil in 1960. She participated in the Nova Figuração (New Figuration) movement there in the early 1960s. Shifting away from representation toward Conceptualism in the early 1970s, Maiolino began working with Super 8, photography, and installation art that prominently featured clay. Major exhibitions of her work have been held in 2001 at The Drawing Center and Art in General, New York; in 2005 at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo; in 2006 at Miami Art Central; in 2010 at the Camden Arts Centre, London, and the Antoní Tàpies Foundation, Barcelona; and in 2017 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Her work is included in the permanent collections of major museums, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Taking the form of an unconsummated striptease with a multicultural pop soundtrack, Colombian artist María José Arjona’s performance All the Others in Me functions as a bridge between “miss-understandings.” It refuses to point at anything specific or resolve these misunderstandings, but instead offers a panoramic vista on our perception of each other across distances. These distances, intentionally created, augmented, altered, and manipulated by mass media and other systems of control, place us in positions of submission under a blanket of so-called “information.” Arjona’s work highlights the continuous transitioning of thoughts that encourage us to just see and absorb but never question. All the Others in Me participates in several conversations between the objectified female body in Western civilization and the feminine body within Islam.

María José Arjona lives and works in her native Bogota. Her artistic practice focuses on long durational performances in which the body is the primary material and medium of visual communication, generating non-linear narratives beyond the concept of identity. Arjona’s work is included in many public and private collections internationally. She has presented her work across Latin America and at the Louvre in Paris; the Thessaloniki Biennale; the Guangzhou Triennale; the Madre Museum in Naples, Italy; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; La Caixa in Madrid; the Ballroom Marfa, Texas; The Watermill Center in Water Mill, New York; and the Museo Universitario del Chopo in Mexico City. Arjona will have a major solo exhibition in 2018 at the Museum of Modern Art in Bogota, accompanied by the first large publication on her work, which includes an essay by André Lepecki.

This lecture-performance addresses the notion of “encounter” as essential to a politics and an aesthetics of the commons. By drawing from several philosophical and political traditions that have analyzed the ethics and politics of the encounter, and by invoking artistic propositions that bring into the world improbable events (particularly in performance art and experimental choreography) André Lepecki will consider how the event of encounter precipitates groundings for living away from the necropolitical logic of our current imperial, colonial and murderous neoliberal monohumanism.
André Lepecki is Professor and Chairperson in Performance Studies at New York University. He is editor of several anthologies on dance and performance theory, including Of the Presence of the Body (2004) and Dance (2012). An independent performance curator, he has created projects for Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin; Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw; the Hayward Gallery, London; Haus der Kunst, Munich; and the 2016 Biennale of Sydney. Lepecki is the author of Exhausting Dance: Performance and the Politics of Movement (2006, translated into ten languages) and Singularities: Dance in the Age of Performance (2016).

Although Ann Pellegrini’s work traverses disciplines, a constant theme is an abiding interest in exploring how feelings are lived, experienced, and communicated, and what potential risks and possibilities result. Another is the value of art and the aesthetic for repairing democratic social life. She is the author of Performance Anxieties: Staging Psychoanalysis, Staging Race (Routledge, 1997); co-author, with Janet R. Jakobsen, of Love the Sin: Sexual Regulation and the Limits of Religious Tolerance (NYU Press, 2003; Beacon Press, 2004); and co-author, with Michael Bronski and Michael Amico, of “You Can Tell Just By Looking” and 20 Other Myths about LGBT Life and People (Beacon Press, 2013). “You Can Tell Just By Looking” was a finalist for the 2014 Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBT Non-Fiction. She has also published two anthologies: Queer Theory and the Jewish Question, co-edited with Daniel Boyarin and Danial Itzkovitz (Columbia University Press, 2003); and Secularisms, co-edited with Janet R. Jakobsen (Duke University Press, 2008). Pellegrini co-edits the Sexual Cultures Series at New York University Press with Joshua Chambers-Letson and Tavia Nyong’o. She is currently completing a new book on “queer structures of religious feeling.” She is a professor in the Department of Performance Studies at New York University.

Teatro Ojo/Hector Bourges/Patricio Villareal: Disorganizing Mimesis 3/10/18

Saturday, 03/10/2018 – 07:30 pm –
MDC Live Arts Lab
300 NE 2nd Avenue, Building 1,
Miami, Florida 33132

Cost: Free

The Mexico City-based group Teatro Ojo essays the possible dispositions and sequences of gestures, images, and machinations that sketch tensions within the texture of a “spectral contract” on which the figure of the Mexican nation-state is incessantly organized and disorganized—a contract plagued by “public secrets”: what we all know and yet we cannot utter. Bourges states the following about Disorganizing Mimesis: “Five images of a radical theatricality: a flayed/flayer god; a talking cross that incites a silent indigenous uprising that lasted a hundred years; a skeleton of the last Aztec emperor made from the bones of birds, deer, dogs, and a woman’s skull; the corpse of Emperor Montezuma talks to his people through a sinister act of ventriloquism; Subcomandante Marcos is unmasked by the Mexican government in 1995…and he turns out to be the son of a furniture dealer.”
Made up of Héctor Bourges, Karla Rodríguez, Patricio Villarreal, Laura Furlan, Gisela Cortés, and Emanuel Bourges, Teatro Ojo was founded in 2002 in Mexico City, where they still live and work. Their practice has shifted from conventionally theatrical territory to an expanded field that includes artworks, performances, and urban interventions. Collaborating with artists Santiago Sierra, Melanie Smith, Mario Bellatín, Juan José Gurrola, and others, the group questions ideas of memory, the city, violence, community, modernity, education, pre-language, and the post-human. Teatro Ojo’s most important projects include the installation Xipe Tótec, Ponte en Mi Pellejo (Put Yourself in My Shoes), at the 2012 Belluard Bollwerk International Festival, Fribourg, Switzerland, and Lo Que Viene (Forthcoming), a stage project at El Galeón Theater, INBA, Mexico City, also in 2012. Teatro Ojo’s work was also included in group exhibitions in 2014 at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid and at the Alhóndiga in Bilbao. In 2011, Teatro Ojo received the gold medal for best Theater Architecture and Performance Space in the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space.
Teatro Ojo is part of Living Together, a cross-disciplinary series of performance art, film and video screenings, talks, and workshops held in venues across the greater Miami area and reflecting the cultural, social, and political realities of how we live now.

In Out of the Shadows III, Jumana Emil Abboud asks “What do places speak of?” This audio-visual performance includes Palestinian folk-tales and traditional oral histories. These stories that inspire the artist have always emphasized the importance of relationships with the landscape and with sources of water. Evoking her Palestinian roots and the places to which she is deeply connected—Jerusalem, Jericho, the Dead Sea, and the Galilee—the artist uses music, poems, and drawings to weave together past and present, contemporary reality and the unseen world with its jinns and ghoulehs. For this world premiere, Abboud collaborates with Issa Freij, and the artists reflect on their experiences during a four-year film project as they searched for the haunted sites of which the tales tell. Their interactive storytelling explores folk customs, sacred objects, and enchanted locations to underscore themes of memory, loss, and resilience.

Texas Two Step CPR is an annual event whose purpose is to engage the public and educate them on the benefits of compressions-only/hands-only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
Training will take place at the Miami-Dade county locations on Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 25th. The Broward county event will take place only on Saturday the 24th.

During 5-minute training sessions, participants learned how to act quickly in the event of cardiac emergencies by following two easy steps: 1) Call 911 and 2) Initiate hands-only CPR.

Compressions-only CPR is easy to perform, and can be done by the layman in emergency situations in order to buy time until Emergency Medical Services arrive.
The event was created by a group of medical students in 2016 after recognizing the need to train more Texans in lifesaving, hands-only CPR. In its inaugural year the event trained more than 4,200 individuals.

To date, this project has trained over 10,000 people in the use of compressions-only CPR with the help of more than 1000 medical students.

As Billie Holiday sings: The same ole story, but it’s new to me… Acclaimed artist Carrie Mae Weems, deemed “one of the more interesting artists working in the gap between art and politics” by The New York Times, presents a new performance-based work, Past Tense. Through music, text, projection, and video, this new performance-lecture takes us on a deep dive into the enduring significance of the iconic Antigone and her profound relevance to our contemporary moment. Past Tense’s origins lie in Weems’ powerful work Grace Notes. Weems says, “While working on Grace Notes for months it occurred to me that I was telling the story of Antigone, wherein an innocent man dies by unjustified means and his sister fights for the right to bury him honorably. But the wider community refuses her; her right to justice, and to peace, is denied.” Through photography, video, installation, and performance works, Carrie Mae Weems has created a complex body of art that investigates family relationships, gender roles, racism, classism, and politics. Although Weems’ work addresses a wide array of issues, her overarching commitment is to help us better understand our present by examining our collective past. Weems, the recipient of numerous awards, grants, and fellowships, including the prestigious MacArthur “genius” grant, the W.E.B DuBois Medal, and Anderson Ranch’s National Artist Award, is represented in public and private collections around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at major national and international museums including the Whitney Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

Eleonora Fabião: Triptych Miami “An Encounter at the New World School for the Arts” 1/25/18

Eleonora Fabião: Triptych Miami “An Encounter at the New World School for the Arts”
Thursday, 01/25/2018 – 07:30 pm –
New World School for the Arts
25 NE 2nd St,
Miami, Florida 33132

Cost: Free

In a program designated Triptych Miami, Eleonora Fabião will present three interrelated components. The action I Will Have a Conversation About Any Subject/Converso Sobre Cualquier Asunto finds the artist at various public locations over the course of three days, barefoot, sitting and facing an empty chair, and displaying a sign bearing the invitation of the work’s title. The artist will also present a lecture performance about her practice; a workshop with young artists titled Performance Art, Artistic Strategies, and Political Imagination (New World School of the Arts); and Light Cloud, an action that will be performed along with the workshop participants in downtown Miami. The unpredictable encounters that result from these open-ended situations constitute the works. Born in Brazil in1968, Eleonora Fabião is an artist and theorist who has performed actions in the streets since 2008. In 2011, she received the Arts in the Streets Award from the Brazilian National Foundation of the Arts and in 2014 the Rumos Itaú Cultural Grant that resulted in the publication of the book AÇÕES/ ACTIONS. Fabião is a professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in the Theater Directing Undergraduate Program and the Arts of the Scene Graduate Program, where she chairs the artistic experimentation wing. A record crowd of corporate and community leaders will attend the MCCJ 2018 Humanitarian Dinner where five notable citizens will join the cadre of those who have received the coveted Silver Medallion. The award will be presented to highlight and honor those whose life represents an outstanding contribution to creating an inclusive Miami. This year, the recipients will be honored at the InterContinental Hotel, 100 Chopin Plaza, on March 10, 2018.

“The MCCJ has a long history of uniting our community, fostering inclusiveness, and celebrating diversity. This year’s Silver Medallion honorees have helped spread this message of unity as they have each left their mark on Miami’s history,” said Tony Argiz, award’s dinner co-chair. “Conchy and I are honored to serve as the chairs of the MCCJ Humanitarian Dinner, and be able to recognize these deserving individuals. This year’s recipients include Betty T. Ferguson, former Miami-Dade County Commissioner; Rose Ellen Greene, philanthropist; Mitchell Kaplan, co-founder of Miami Book Fair International; and Myron J. “Mike” Brodie, former executive director of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, who will receive his award posthumously. The Clergy Medallion is being given to Rabbi Judith Siegal, senior rabbi of Temple Judea.

Since the establishment of the Humanitarian Awards in 1946, MCCJ has united the community in celebration of Miami’s diversity and in appreciation of those who have helped to build a more welcoming, inclusive, just and cooperative society. MCCJ board chair, Sherry Tropin said that the idea behind this year’s dinner was to use the image of a puzzle to express the fact that there are many pieces that make up Miami. “We each have a place here, but together, we make Miami whole. It’s with that in mind that we’ve chosen Miami: You Fit Right In as this year’s theme”. George J. Mitchell, former Senate majority leader and U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace, will be the featured speaker as part of Temple Israel’s Dr. Bernard & Jeanette Gordon Halperin Memorial Lecture Series. Senator Mitchell will share the stage with Alon Sachar, with whom he co-wrote the recent book A Path to Peace: A Brief History of Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations and a Way Forward in the Middle East. Sachar was an advisor for the advancement of Middle East peace in both the Bush and Obama Administrations.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Seats are available on a first come, first served basis.

Mitchell and Sachar will offer their insiders’ account of progress and backsliding in the Israeli and Palestinians negotiations. They will offer their views on specific concessions each side must make in order to achieve peace. A question and answer period will follow their presentation.

It has been said “there is not a man, woman or child in the Capitol who does not trust George Mitchell.” In his 15 years as a U.S. Senator, George J. Visitors are invited to cool off and join the fun at Florida Power & Light Company’s Cooling Station this Sept. 9-10 at the Museum Plaza of the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Downtown Miami’s Museum Park. It’s the perfect location to cool down during some of the city’s hottest events including: Free Second Saturdays at the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), DWNTWN Art Days and the Arsht Center’s ArtsLaunch.

The Cooling Station is the perfect way to recharge during an exciting weekend of local events. It showcases how customers can beat the heat this summer with FPL’s energy-saving tips and tools – including the new mobile app and the Online Home Energy Survey – and turn themselves into energy experts by taking control of their usage and bill.

Guests can also participate in “Take Flight with Kites” with Frost Science, presented by the Miami Downtown Development Authority, as they learn about the history of kites and how they fly, plus make and decorate their own kites.

Artists to create art exhibition to protest racism.

The aftermath of this weekend’s events that left 36 peaceful protesters injured and one dead at a KKK and White Supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia has sparked local and national outcry for change. The local community of Miami based artists of color by the name of BRiCK have organized an event to promote awareness, unity and social justice.

The art and multi-media event focused on the exchange of knowledge, cooperative economics, creative expression, and continuance of the dialogue on freedom. Well known artists such as Ivette Cabrera, LaToya “Swarmmode” Mathis, Blackbrain, Steelshadow, Courtney Harris and Olandland will be exhibiting controversial artworks as well as large scale interactive art installations that will encourage visitors to take part in the movement to end racism.

“BRiCK is an event that is focused on what we believe to be the main principles of creating the foundation for progressive change for People of Color within our community: cooperative economics, education, health and wellness, celebration-of-self and culture, and community outreach and exchange by creatives and intellectuals.”

This will be an art and PoC entrepreneur showcase featuring local businesses and artists of the South Florida community. It will also entail a panel discussion/live taping of Rock the Shell, a web series focused on discussing and building awareness of issues surrounding race, class, and gender. T he panel discussion will also include an artists talk on artworks in the exhibition, the artistic process and how their art encourages change.

Each ticket sale will include a raffle ticket to win artworks throughout the night and portion of proceeds will go to help benefit the victims of the Charlottesville attack.

Come out and help us fight oppression by taking part in the conversation for change!

I AM MDC Day 9/6/17

I AM MDC Day
Wednesday, 09/09/2017 – 09/06/2017 12:00 am – 11:59 pm
Miami Dade College
300 NE 2nd Ave.,
Miami, Florida 33132
Website
Cost: No fee

Miami Dade College (MDC) celebrates I AM MDC DAY (www.mdc.edu/iammdc/), an annual day of giving and pride honoring the College’s rich history and unparalleled impact on the community, Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Fifty-seven years ago on Sept. 6 1960, Miami Dade College opened the door to the American Dream. Today, more than two million alumni can say “I AM MDC” because MDC afforded them the opportunity to pursue a college education – the ticket to a better future – that for many was otherwise out of reach.

The 24-hour celebration will highlight the achievements of MDC alumni, students, staff, and faculty; inspire pride; and increase awareness of the College’s profound educational, economic and cultural significance to South Florida and beyond.

The event will focus on engaging the MDC community to post stories, tweets, share images and videos about their alma mater and what I AM MDC means to them, on social media and using #iammdc. Students, faculty and staff will commemorate the history of the College with a kickoff at 10 a.m. at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami, followed by events at each of the school’s nine campuses throughout Miami-Dade County all day long.

For 24 hours on Sept. 6, the College will encourage members of the community whose lives have been touched by MDC to make a gift to deserving students.
