Orchestra presents bilingual performances of “Peter and the Wolf/Pedro y el Lobo†for schools and families
Collaborations continue and expand with New World Symphony and University of Miami Frost School of Music; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA); and Overtown Youth Center
The Cleveland Orchestra will be in Miami for the third and final week of its 2009 Miami Residency, culminating in a weekend of subscription concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County on April 3-4 and other activities in Miami-Dade County.
Subscription Concerts
On April 3 and 4, Pinchas Steinberg conducts the Orchestra in performances of Barber’s Overture to The School for Scandal, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, and Brahms’s Violin Concerto with Nikolaj Znaider as soloist. The Orchestra will also perform two daytime Education Concerts for Miami-Dade County Public School students on Thursday, April 2, and a Family Concert on Saturday, April 4.
These performances will take place in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. The Cleveland Orchestra’s subscription series is presented by the Musical Arts Association of Miami and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.
Peter and the Wolf/Pedro y el Lobo Concerts for Schools and Families
Latin Grammy Award-winner, flutist, and Miami resident Nestor Torres joins The Cleveland Orchestra for a series of education and family concerts in April, when he will narrate bilingual performances of Peter and the Wolf/Pedro y el Lobo, a favorite of the classical music repertoire that introduces young people to the orchestra. Each character in Prokofiev’s musical story about an adventurous little boy is represented by the distinctive sound of a different instrument or family of instruments. Assistant Conductor Tito Muñoz will lead the Family Concert program, which also includes works by Dvořák, Cimarosa, Delecluse, and Mozart.
Mr. Torres and Cleveland Orchestra Assistant Principal Flute Marisela Sager will perform the third movement from the Concerto in G major for Two Flutes by Domenico Cimarosa.
For the Education Concerts, which are offered free of charge to the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, teachers at participating schools have received related curriculum materials including CDs, teacher guides, and student newspapers to help them prepare students for their concert.
Family Fest at the Adrienne Arsht Center,

Just prior to the April 4 Cleveland Orchestra Family Concert, families will have the opportunity to See! Touch! Learn! Discover! the Performing Arts with Family Fest at the Adrienne Arsht Center when the Parker and Vann Thomson Plaza becomes Miami’s most exciting interactive arts playground. Hands-on, free, fun learning activities for children include crafts, face-painting, storytelling, and movement and theater classes, as well as outdoor performances.

Community Concerts
The Orchestra continues its collaborations with a number of community partners, including a special evening of contemporary chamber music with the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy, at the Museum of Contemporary Art on Thursday, April 2. An ensemble of 20 members of The Cleveland Orchestra and New World Symphony will perform works by Piazzolla, Del Aguila, Andriessen, and Poulenc. This is the first chamber music collaboration by the two orchestras.
Also on Thursday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m., the Amici String Quartet, comprised of members of The Cleveland Orchestra, will perform an evening of chamber music at Coral Gables Congregational Church, a new Miami Residency partner. Featured works include Hugo Wolf’s Italian Serenade and Beethoven’s String Quartet in B flat major, Opus 130.
On Saturday, April 4, at 4:00 p.m., the Cleveland Duo and James Umble, including Cleveland Orchestra members Carolyn and Stephen Warner, will perform a children’s concert at the University of Miami as part of the Sunday Afternoon of Music for Children series.
Education Partnerships
The Orchestra continues its partnership with the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music with master classes on Tuesday, March 31, and a new composition reading session on Friday, April 3. Also on April 3, Cleveland Orchestra musicians will lead a seminar in orchestral techniques for high-school students who are participating in the New World Symphony Side-By-Side program.
The Cleveland Orchestra’s subscription concert rehearsal on April 3 will be open to students at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, New World Symphony Fellows, and music students from Florida International University and New World School of the Arts.
Pre-Concert Conversations
Pre-Concert Conversations are presented one hour before Cleveland Orchestra subscription concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center, unless otherwise noted. Free to concert ticketholders, these Conversations are designed to enrich the concert-going experience by providing insight into the music performed at the concerts, or through interviews with performing artists.
On April 3 and 4 from 7:00–7:30 p.m., Frank Dans, artistic administrator, will provide a sneak peek into the Orchestra’s upcoming 2010 Miami Residency.

History of The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency
The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency project commenced in January 2007, during the 2006-07 inaugural season of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (then called Carnival Center for the Performing Arts). The Orchestra’s residency project in Miami includes an annual series of subscription concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center as well as service to the Miami community through educational activities. The Orchestra’s residency activities in Miami were conceived and made possible with the leadership of the Musical Arts Association of Miami, the Miami-based board governing the Orchestra’s Miami Residency.
Over the course of the 2009 Residency, which began with events in January, The Cleveland Orchestra will reach nearly 7,000 people with educational and community engagement activities. This includes nearly 4,000 students from Miami-area public and private schools who will attend April Education Concerts.
In addition to its residency at the Adrienne Arsht Center, The Cleveland Orchestra currently has three other intensive and regular performing relationships, including residencies, outside of Cleveland:
* Carnegie Hall in New York
* The Lucerne Festival in Switzerland
* The Musikverein in Vienna, Austria.
Continuing a long relationship with Carnegie Hall, the Orchestra committed to a multi-year association of performances there under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. With Carnegie Hall and the Lucerne Festival, the Orchestra is involved in a biennial commissioning project, the Roche Commissions, which include world premiere performances by the Orchestra at the Lucerne Festival. The Orchestra has performed at the Lucerne Festival four times since 2004, most recently in August 2008.
The Musikverein Residency was conceived as a long-term relationship, which includes series of concerts at the Musikverein under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. The Orchestra’s five concerts at the Musikverein in 2003 marked the first such residency by an American orchestra in the history of that venue. In its third Musikverein Residency, the Orchestra performed four concerts at the Musikverein in October/November 2007.
During a Salzburg Festival Residency in August 2008, the Orchestra and Mr. Welser-Möst performed in five sold-out presentations of a new production of Dvořák’s Rusalka, and performed three additional concert programs.
At a New York Residency in February 2009, members of the Orchestra gave master classes at the Juilliard School and performed chamber music at an event at the 92nd Street Y celebrating the 80th birthday of novelist Milan Kundera. Students at the Juilliard School also had the opportunity for close-up interaction with Music Director Franz Welser-Möst, who led them in a reading rehearsal of Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony.
