Have-Nots Comedy and Villa 221 present a unique comedy show featuring some of South Florida’s best talent.

Headliner: Forrest Shaw
Born in Miami and raised as an only child by a single hippie mother, Forrest Shaw got into stand-up comedy after a decade of life as a marine biologist. Saving manatees and counting seagrass by day, at night, Forrest dedicated himself to comedy, quickly working his way into regular club work. The influence of his former life as a biologist is evident in his material. Forrest delivers witty and clever anecdotes of his unorthodox with a wry smile. He shares his own faults and failures with the audience in hopes that they too can find the lighter side of those things in life, which sometimes seem too much to bear. He also isn’t fond of stupid people; but who is? Life is complicated and it shouldn’t be. We have created all of this stress and aggravation so the healthiest thing to do is make fun of ourselves and laugh about it.

Featuring the hilarious Wendi Starling and Richy Lala

Opening Mayami Son Machin 5/20/11

Opening Reception, Friday May 20th 7 – 10 PM
Mayami Son Machín< 174 NW 23 Street Miami, Florida 33127/p>

A project on Latin America, music, and gender
by Proyectos Ultravioleta, Guatemala City
The exhibition will remain on view thru July 23rd, 2011

Works by:
Abner Benaim, Bhakti Baxter, Juan Brenner, Buró de Intervenciones Públicas (BIP), Alfredo Ceibal, DETEXT, Juan Pablo Echeverri, Radamés “Juni” Figueroa, Hulda Guzmán, Jonathan Harker, Rita Indiana & Los Misterios + Noelia Quintero, Byron Mármol, Sofia Novella, Yoshua Okón, Fabi Pina, Naufus Ramirez-Figueroa, Carla Verea/Estudio Lake Verea in collaboration with Silverio, Carlos Woods

Mayami Son Machín is an exhibition which aims to explore common preconceptions about Latin American identity as seen through a fantasized place called Mayami, a city cloaked in a mystic haze of glory and glamour. The title of the exhibition is derived from The Miami Sound Machine, a 90’s era music group, which epitomized the notion of what it means to be latino living in Miami.

Maymi Son Machín departs from three principal notions;
1. “Mayami” as a referent and final destination of Latin American aspirations; both in terms of those who experience it via forced migration (economic, political, etc.) and those individuals for whom Miami becomes a Mecca of shopping and glamour.

2. “El Son” referencing the intrinsic rhythm of certain Latin American countries, music in general as the identifying characteristic of Latino cultures, along with the dances formed alongside these rhythms and their relationship to a sexual identity as characterized by a Latin American exoticism.

3. “Machîn” derived from “macho” which encompasses those works that construct and destroy the idea of the Latin American male, both in terms of an overly inflated notion of masculinity, alongside a stereotypical and caricature-like notion of female identity.

This exhibition was organized by Proyectos Ultravioleta, an artist run exhibition space located in downtown Guatemala City. The organizers were introduced to the gallery via New Methods, a symposium presented at The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, organized by Ruba Katrib.

neither here nor there by Audrey Hynes will be on view from June 10 – 26, 2011
UM presents the Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Audrey Hynes on view beginning June 10, 2011. neither here nor there aims to evoke the familiar and the fantastical through non-site objects, on-site installation, site-specific installation, sculpture, video, sound and photography as documentation.

The basis of her work is conceptual, in an effort to rethink and recontextualize our perception of reality. The artist has said that the project specifically explores issues of material and location, by investigating an invasive species, the melaleuca tree, that has altered the physical terrain of the Everglades and South Florida. The exploration and manipulation of the materials becomes the process of each project, where the artwork is about process and time rather than static and enduring. The projects are relative to time and place within the site, they are temporary arrangements that are subject to change and become more of a sequence and narrative with each rearrangement, they are ephemeral like the material. The environmental, political and social conditions of the site are discovered through an exploration of location, material, process, and production.

Her projects are invented realities presented as fact that employ a pseudoscientific approach by using a variety of materials each with a corresponding process that becomes a major component for the overall inspiration and communication of the project. The actualization of the work occurs in two ways: either the artist begins with a solid idea and employs materials to certain ends, or my methodology begins as experimentation and leads to new discoveries and objects. This practice helps ensure an intuitive creative reaction that directly feeds her concept allowing an openness to new discoveries and provides fodder for developing dynamic, layered, stories. Her investigations frequent the topics of temporality, space, and time, and she is interested in the role that imagination plays in forming and reforming these physical properties of experience.

Her work is partially autobiographical and she attempts to detach herself from it to place it in a larger context with the intention of expressing a variety of feelings evident through human behavior. Each sculpture, photograph and installation relates to a theory where a subjective experience is in relation to a phenomena. The directedness that each project attempts to embody is an experience that is worldly, and inviting interaction and thought. By portraying her work as documentation of an actual experience, she attempts to evoke a sense of empathy with the object.

Hynes was born in Atlanta, Georgia and currently lives and works in Miami. She obtained her BFA from University of New Mexico in Studio Arts and a Post Baccaulaurette Certificate in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute.

Art Walk in Wynwood, a great experience for art lovers By Betty Alvarez

I have always enjoyed artwalk in the Design District and that is where I usually go when I am in the area. However, I realized that I have not been to a Wynwood Art Walk for as long as I can remember. Therefore, as the date of the Wynwood Art Walk was approaching and two great events were happening in that area, I just had to try it out. This was the beginning of many firsts for me.

To begin, two of the galleries were opening at 5 p.m. instead of the usual 7 p.m., that gave me more time to scout the area. I parked near a parking lot which was the meeting place of the all-famous food trucks: Ms. Cheezious, The Mexican Gourmet, Daddy’s Grill, Che Grill, Red Koi, Sakaya Kitchen, and many more. It was a food truck lover’s delight. I have heard of the food trucks but never experience eating from one. I tried the pork croquettes from Sakaya kitchen and the Beef soft tacos from The Mexican Gourmet. YUM! It was hot right out of the oven and fresh. You just want to eat it right away. It was a great first time experience. I never knew that the area also had mobile bars and benches which art goers can enjoy their delectable meals. Although I understand that the food trucks have to work in an area where it is feasible for them but I would have liked that the parking lot to be more pedestrian friendly as the ground was not all smooth for walking. I had to walk in the midst of rocks and debris. Apart from that, a very good experience that I want to come back.

One of the first galleries I visited was Miguel Paredes Gallery. This contemporary artist is very gifted in his work. Very modernistic and every artwork is unique in its own way. I never seen anything like it. On this occasion, beverages was sponsored by Chivas and appetizers were from D. Rodriguez Cuba on Ocean. Chivas had two unique drinks: Chivas Smash and Punch. Although both were good, I personally loved the punch topped with an edible flower. Chef Douglas Rodriguez created some scrumptious appetizers such as small Marlin tacos, Tuna Tartar, Chicken Skewers, and the ever popular beef on a stick (it looked liked warm beef popsicle). I so wanted to try the “beef popsicle” but I had to go. That will be my appetizer when I go to the restaurant in the near future.

Gallery 212 was the destination of the launch of the art bus connecting Wynwood and Design District. Mayor Tomas Regalado was the guest of honor in the ribbon cutting ceremony. The Art Bus is a school bus that will take art lovers from Wynwood to Design District without the hassle of going to their cars and going to design district. This is convenient. As I waited for the Mayor and ceremony to begin, I strolled inside the gallery. There were many great works in many mediums but one type of artistic work that caught my eye was Michael Perez’s hand painted wine glasses. These one of a kind wine glasses are the type to have in a girls night. Although the artist told me that the wine glasses were not for drinking use due to the delicate artwork, he will be making wine glasses in a medium that people can drink from them while enjoying the wonderful artwork in them. I truly loved it.

Across the street, Harold Golen Gallery was holding an opening for the launch of Bunny Yeager’s book, Bouffant Beauties which featured her famous photographs of yesteryear’s beauties and centerfolds. As I skimmed through the book, she was incredibly a great photographer especially during the golden epoch era were there were many taboos especially for women.

As the night was heading to a close, I stopped by Cafeina for Miami Magazine’s/One Sotheby Tweet UP event. As this event was winding down, I went in to the gallery where it was suggested to go as there was a new installation. The works were wonderful as it reminded me of Bunny Yeager’s photographic book. As I went outside, the DJ was playing music from the 70’s but as I turned around to face the gallery, I noticed that the video was playing in sync with the music. What a flashback! As I stayed for 30 minutes, music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s played with the video. Definitely a blast from the past.

I visited other galleries in the area earlier that night and every gallery had a story of its own. I never knew how popular Wynwood has become over the years. There were so many people that I could barely walk on the sidewalk. Also, I went back to the food truck area and it was very crowded. People just love Wynwood for its modernistic, independent, futuristic artworks. Being different is to me the overall message that Wynwood wants to disseminate. Saturday, May 14 was a first experience that I want to relive over and over again. Kudos Wynwood as I will be coming back!!

Whale and Star Lecture Arshile Gorky and Abstract Expressionism 5/18/11

Whale & Star Lecture Project. Lecture 7: Arshile Gorky and Abstract Expressionism: A Contested History by Michael R. Taylor
Wednesday, May 18, 2011, 7:00 p.m.
Whale & Star
2215 NW 1st Place
Miami, Florida 33127
www.whaleandstar.com

Admission: $5 Lecture Fee / Limited seating
RSVP: 305.576.6160

This lecture will explore Arshile Gorky’s complex and often misunderstood relationship with the Abstract Expressionist movement. The initial reception of Gorky’s work after his death in 1948 paved the way for his gradual assimilation into the canon of Abstract Expressionism as it was formed in the 1950s by, among others, Clement Greenberg, Harold Rosenberg, Thomas Hess, Sam Hunter, and Dore Ashton. Gorky’s work was acclaimed by these critics and art historians as an important precursor to the large-scale abstract paintings of his friends and colleagues, such as Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. Although universally accepted at the time, this reading of Gorky’s work has been contested in recent years, since it deliberately downplays the artist’s longstanding allegiance to Surrealism during his lifetime, leading to a fundamental misreading of his work and its meaning.

Michael R. Taylor is the Muriel and Philip Berman Curator of Modern Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His most recent exhibitions at the Museum include Picasso and the Avant-Garde in Paris (2010); Marcel Duchamp: Etant donn’s (2009); Arshile Gorky: A Retrospective (2009); Salvador Dali: The Centennial Retrospective (2005); and Giorgio de Chirico and the Myth of Ariadne (2002). Dr. Taylor studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where he wrote a masters thesis on Richard Hamilton and a doctoral dissertation on Marcel Duchamp’s readymades. He has published widely on Duchamp, Dada, and Surrealism. In 2009 he co-curated with Carlos Basualdo the Bruce Nauman exhibition at the American Pavilion for the 53rd Venice Biennale (winner of the Golden Lion award for best national pavilion). Future projects include an exhibition on Surrealism in the 1940s that focuses on myth, magic, and eroticism. In 2010 Dr. Taylor’s book Marcel Duchamp: Etan t donnis won the George Wittenborn Prize for outstanding research and scholarship in the field of art history.

Arrived gathers 18 photographs intervened with digitalillustrations (mixed media) by Venezuelan artist, painter and illustrator M-Lon(Miguel Gonzalez), who combines photography with the use of a WACOM digitalpen, thus giving life to images that equally share the participation of bothreality and fantasy.

This series is born bythe need to awaken reflections about our environment, by means of the visit ofimaginary beings that interact with our context. These entities star in scenesof urban and natural encounters, particular or general ones, within a reality which we would consider they don’t belong to, butnevertheless where they try to find their own space.

By penetrating into anunknown society, these beings attempt to discover our world through innocentfrolicking; and the behavior that sometimes seems vile or spiteful, is nothingmore than a wild and instinctive interaction caused by not knowing the conduct codes of our world. In fact, these are interactions where the process of exploring turns them intopersonifications of feelings and moods in their maximum state of purity;emotions we can somehow relate to.

These approaches, many times nostalgic and curious butalways naïve, along with their visions confronted with joy or lack of it when entering our space, are an invitation todiscover, imagine and reconsider the world that surrounds us.

Arrived reflects on the M-Lon’s idea that when we trulycome close and stop to observe, admire and understand that all these elements, natural or man-made, mean something to someone, it is in that precise momentwhen we will begin to take care, enjoy and respect it all.

Xenia Fink
07 May – 31 May 2011

Galerieschustermiami is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Berlin based artist Xenia FInk. The “ drawings” opens 14.May. during the Wynwood Second Saturday . The exhibition will be open one week before the official opening. All drawings are done during the ISCP Grant 2010 in New York.

Xenia Fink (born 1979 in Sao Paulo, Brazil) was raised in Brazil and Mexico before moving back to Germany to study Illustration at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg and finished with the Master in Painting at the UDK in Berlin. Recent exhibitions include group shows at the Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien, Berlin; Galerie Schuster, Berlin and Miami; and solo shows at the Galerie Volkspark and Halle and Galerie Schuster, Berlin. and now Galerieschustermiami.

Xenia Fink provides the figures in pictures with contradictory character traits. They are never reduced to being good or evil but are full of nuances. She succeeds in creating droll figures doing crazy things. Thus the limit between fiction and reality dissolves. Sometimes this becomes threatening, sometimes it sets you free and sometimes it is just wonderful. The artist’s tableaus are also infused with a repertory of stylistic and formal elements of the modern pop culture. Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch are perceptible as are the framing of the images which overall are reminescent of cinematography.

Xenia Fink`s bold croppings and close-ups show figures, scenes and objects that are of such vividness as if she had photographed them with pencil and brush. For the viewer it is a foolhardy game of illusion and reality and there is the danger of totally losing one`s footing.

In the fall of last year, Krane, Inc. and New Light Foundation, Inc. decided that they wanted to honor the upcoming 10th anniversary of September 11th. However, the companies did not want to show the over-exposed images of the towers crashing down all over again; they also did not want to hit audiences over the head with material they were already de-sensitized to.

Instead, the companies sent out a call to writers, asking them to submit shorts about the issues that arose post 9/11; in other words, the issues we grapple with today and have been grappling with for a decade. The writers were asked to not mention the Trade Towers, or September 11th; to not mention 9/11 or Ground Zero, or any of the other names that arose out of the space left behind.

The result was an influx of scripts from all over the United States, which were then judged by a panel of writers, directors, and actors. From these submissions, seven were selected. These are the shorts that comprise Who Could Have Predicted? Comedy and Dramedy that delves into the depths of Reality TV; the constant flow of electronic news-feeds; airport security; identity; immigration; and just plain sex.

“What we found was really interesting. There was a lot of comedy submitted, which is fascinating — the results didn’t produce dramatic tomes of disaster, but just the opposite. I think that says something about the power of comedy to tackle serious subjects and twist our brains around in a way that makes us look at old ideas and situations in a new light,” says Vanessa Garcia, Founding Artistic Director of Krane, Inc.
“Who Could Have Predicted is an innovative leap into the present reflecting our post 9-11 world – encompassing a weave of plays from gifted national playwrights whose writings all transcend the current conflicts of our time resulting in an important yet comedic night of theater,” says Wendy White, Co-Founder of the New Light Foundation, Inc.

As for the companies themselves — Krane, Inc. and New Light Foundation, Inc. have produced performances all over the world from Amsterdam to Edinburgh; New York City to Miami. This is their first performance in Los Angeles.

In 2009, New Light Foundation, Inc. represented the United States as Art ambassadors by the 1-2-3 Kinderlachen e.V. foundation of Rottenburg, Germany by hosting the international “Global Gallery” project (www.123kinderlachen.org). During the course of this important project, the “world’s biggest canvas” emerged; painted by children – transcending all borders and conflicts.

Krane, Inc. was named Best of the City 2010 by Miami Magazine, as the best up and coming theatre company in town. http://vanessagarcia.org/press/tethrical-chairs.php. Also in 2010, Vanessa Garcia, the Founding Artistic Director of Krane, Inc. was named one of Miami’s 20 Under 40 by The Miami Herald for her work in theatre. Colleen Plumb Artist Talk and Book Signing 5/6/11

Artist Talk and Book Signing
Thursday, May 12, 7pm
Dina Mitrani Gallery

COLLEEN PLUMB
Animals are Outside Today
May 12 – June 25, 2011

Animals are Outside Today examines relationships between humans and animals, studying how animals are woven through the fabric of culture. The project stems from the artist’s interest in the ever-increasing disconnection that exists between humans and the natural world. Living and dead, real and fake, as displays or companions, these images investigate both our kinship and disjuncture from other creatures of this Earth. The photographs are visually compelling samples of Plumb’s keen eye for the intimate, subtle corners of culture that capture animals in everyday life.

A native of Chicago, Colleen Plumb attended the University of Illinois in Urbana and studied drawing before transferring to Northern Illinois University, earning a BFA in Visual Communication in 1992. Plumb holds an MFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago (1999), where she is currently an adjunct faculty member. Plumb’s work is in the permanent collections at the Museum of Contemporary Photography; the Milwaukee Art Museum; the Notebaert Nature Museum, Chicago; and the Beijing Natural Cultural Center in China. Her photographs are part of the Midwest Photographers Project at the Museum of Contemporary Photography and the Chicago Project at Catherine Edelman Gallery. Recent exhibitions include a solo exhibit at the Jen Bekman Gallery in New York City; the Notebaert Nature Museum, Chicago; group shows at Santa Monica Art Studios, California; Humble Arts Foundation, New York; Zolla/Lieberman Gallery, Chicago; Evanston Biennial, Evanston, Illinois; Chicago Cultural Center; and the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington D.C.

Her book, available at the gallery, has just been published by Radius Books and includes an essay by Lisa Hostetler, curator of photographs at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
Hardbound, 9 x 10 inches, 128 pages, 74 color illustrations, $50.
Limited edition of 40, signed copy of the book, a 15 x 15 inch pigment print, all in a cloth covered clamshell box available upon request.

Cafeina & Michael Margulies Artist Agency Present Debut Show By The Surface Merchants
“Lost and Found: freedom in post-graffism” reflects discontent in America via 3-D wall art

The Wynwood Exhibition Center at Cafeina, along with the Michael Margulies Artist Agency, is pleased to announce its latest exhibition, “Lost and Found: freedom in post-graffism,” which will run from Friday, April 8, 2011 until Sunday, May 1, 2011. It is the debut show by the Surface Merchants collective, comprised of Miami artists Raymond Adrian, Alex Yanes and Daniel Fila. The artists will be on-site in the 1,000-square-foot gallery for a special “meet & greet” on May, 1, 2011 to close out the show.

The trio derives inspiration from the discontent with the current economics of life in modern-day America. The installation features vibrant characters painted on wood that are made into striking, large-scale, 3-D wall art and blends the artists’ distinctive styles to create a unique experience for the viewer.

Artist Sebastian Spreng unveils Salad Bar at Kelley Roy Gallery 5/14/11

Opening Saturday, May 14th, 2-9pm.
Kelley Roy Gallery
50 NE 29th Street
Wynwood Arts District, Miami
www.kelleyroygallery.com

Spring has sprung, and the seasonal Miami art scene just got a boost as Argentinean-American artist Sebastian Spreng announced the unveiling of his newest series, a departure from his previous work, whimsically titled Salad Bar. The installation is comprised of 250 paintings (5×5, 6×6 and 8×8 canvases), which will be unveiled at the Kelley Roy Gallery starting May 12 through June 11, 2011.

Completed in over the course of a year, Salad Bar harkens the arrival of spring with undertones of rebirth and renewal. Spreng, a minimalist at heart, shines new light on his soul-searching pivotal themes to present a fresh new puzzle-like installation. Nature remains a prominent motif, as the artist channels landscapes of his native Pampas, Argentina, fused with his love of music, to create bucolic and enigmatic, gem-like square paintings juxtaposed with abstracts and textured canvases functioning as pauses and intervals in “a woven tapestry of life”, as he calls it. Spreng has been defined as “an artist that recontextualized the Pampas into an oneiric American formation.”

Attracting audiences since he was fifteen-years-old, Sebastian Spreng’s career spans over three decades. He’s been featured in exhibitions in over 30 cities around the world, participated in a bevy of high-profile art fairs and is currently represented by galleries in Atlanta, Boston, Miami, Panama, Santa Fe and Seattle. His artworks can be found on the walls of prestigious institutions like Miami Art Museum, Museo Rosa Galisteo de Rodriguez in Argentina, The Four Seasons, Miami-Dade Public Library System, Seattle University, several banks and the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in Washington, DC. He also produced a public art commission in Miami, when he was selected by Metro-Dade’s Art in Public Places program to create nine paintings as a memorial to George Armitage, a local advocate for the disabled who died in 1991. The commissioned opportunity was a challenge and an inspiration to Spreng, who is wheelchair bound since childhood.

When he is not painting, he devotes his time to his other passion, music. Spreng is an esteemed classical music critic, writing for several publications. According to Spreng, he balances his profession (painting) with his hobby (writing about music) making his hobby as a job and vice versa, in order to give a continuous and satisfying dynamic to his artistic endeavors.
Art critic Dr. Carol Damian, Director for the Frost Art Museum at FIU, wrote “…Sebastian Spreng’s paintings demonstrate the essence of simplicity, visual abstractions of form and color… upon close examination it is quite evident that technically they are anything but simple…”

Music plays a crucial role in Spreng’s body of work, it can be seen in the colors, composition, rhythm and spatiality of his paintings – one of the reasons many of his artworks grace the covers of music albums, playbills and most recently, a book. Spreng’s Daphne was selected to be part of the project and art book “Speak for the Trees,” along with 76 other artists including David Hockney, Christo, April Gornik, Yoko Ono, Julie Heffernan, Robert Longo, Mark Ryden and the Starn Brohters.

A feast for the eyes, Salad Bar marries Spreng’s lyricism and drama with a fresh new perspective. Like a salad bar, there are numerous flavors and combinations (given the small scale of the square paintings). Avid collectors are encouraged to mix and match, and create entirely unique arrangements.

Paredes explains “Ghost Writer” is one of his most intricate pieces to date. “I really enjoyed creating ‘Ghost Writer’ because I was able to incorporate different elements of realism, urban surreal pop, anime and abstract art into one piece. Experimenting with acrylic oils, pastels and collage work was even more exciting and it allowed me to make the painting really stand out. I love working with mixed media!” says the artist.

Guests in attendance will enjoy light “Nuevo Latino” fare by De Rodriguez Cuba on Ocean and its renowned chef Douglas Rodriguez. “I am very excited to be working with Miguel on this initiative,” said Rodriguez. “Being a part of the ‘Ghost Writer’ presentation is a huge honor and I look forward to many more creative collaborations with him.”

About Miguel Paredes
Paredes, a New York native, is an Urban Realist who combines cutting-edge techniques of street art, pop art and Japanese animation to create his own genre of trend-forward pieces. Drawing inspiration from pop icons such as his own mentor Ronnie Cutrone, Andy Warhol’s immediate assistant at The Factory during the notorious pop artist’s most productive and prestigious years, Warhol himself and Keith Haring, Paredes has created his own unique and explosive style. His combination of street graffiti, landscape and pop art have propelled his crossover from street walls, during his days as a student at the prestigious Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music and Art in the ’80s, to becoming a highly regarded creator of fine decorative art, prized by collectors from Los Angeles to Seoul.

Paredes, now Miami-based, has become one of the local arts’ scenes most prosperous artists. “Pulgha World,” an 18×26 mosaic mural donated by the artist on August 2010, is a colorful landmark located in the heart of Wynwood Arts District and his nearby new solo space, Miguel Paredes Fine Art Gallery, opened on February 2011 to rave reviews. Furthermore, he recently became the first Miami-Dade resident to ever receive simultaneous proclamations from the City of Miami Beach and Village of Pinecrest honoring his artistic donation to the Miami Design Preservation League’s Art Deco Welcome Center and support of historic preservation, devotion to the city and positive impact on the community.

The artist is also well-known for his iconic, Japanese anime-inspired digital series Pulghaâ„¢ & Birds. In this collection Pulghaâ„¢, a magical flea, and her friends the spirited Birds, Yoli & Kosue, join forces for good. An original, branded cartoon series based on these creations is being represented by the William Morris Endeavor Agency and the first in a new collection of fine oil paintings “Pulgha Flight” is currently on display at his Wynwood gallery. Moreover, Paredes continues to make his mark by further expanding his inspirational environment while simultaneously showcasing his works at local, national and international shows, including Artist-In-Residence at the iconic National Hotel during Art Basel Miami Beach, 2010.

The Grit in The Oyster is What Becomes A Pearl
Essay by Dean Daderko

Naomi Fisher captures her compelling images in a variety of media. Fisher trained as a painter, and she remains dedicated to the practice, making plein-air watercolors and sketches of, among other subjects, landscapes, plants and birds. She is just as adept at realizing figures and dream imagery in her studio paintings. She is also well-known for her photographs combining bodies and botany in sensual and erotic tableaux. More recently Fisher has began exhibiting semi-narrative video works that are a logical synthesis and extension of her image-making practice.

There is “Fisher, the photographer,” and “Fisher, the painter.” But perhaps the most productive way to approach her practice is to consider “Fisher, the artist.” Separating Fisher’s works by medium denies them a more productive, holistic relationship. Moreover, the varied mediums Fisher engages freely feed each other: painted canvases use film and video stills as visual references, painterly uses of color, gesture, and image cropping are evident in her camera work, and pictures come to life in her videos. These bodies of work are engaged in a compelling conversation.

A sense of wildness in Fisher’s work is cultivated in the way that one might forage through the woods or a vintage shop – a comfortable and shaggy utopia prevails throughout. The frisson in Fisher’s work comes from the way in which she comfortably combines modes and methods of representation against-the-grain. The grit in the oyster is what becomes a pearl. Myakka, P.B., SKINT, Island, 2011, is a Romantic female portrait in toned-down grays and earthy, elemental washes of color, punctuated with dashes of fluorescent paint and sparkle. A woman’s face stares out from the painting’s depths, and is overlaid with an image of a long-haired, sinewy figure who fits over her face like a puzzle piece. The image calls to mind Surrealist painting, the cut-and-paste aesthetic of punk ‘zines, and Toulouse-Lautrec in successive waves.

Though her paintings may look effortless, they are the result of exhaustive advance studies in charcoal and watercolor through which Fisher hones her vision and familiarizes herself with her subjects. Some tries are eventually discarded, but those that succeed share a sense of vision that communicates with an audience in the same way as they communicate the artist’s intent: they become convincing, autonomous images with lives of their own.

In Morning, 2010, a group of figures are gathered together in what seems to be a ritual event. Painted over an acidic yellow background in warm oranges and reds, and cool greys, lavender and leaf green, the image seems to be disintegrating in the light. The background seems to be emerging through the figures, and they’re rendered crystalline and immaterial by the effect. And for all of it’s immateriality, this image of Fisher’s comes from real life: the image itself depicts a group of the artists collaborators involved in a process of creating a world of their own.

The artist’s recent single-channel video Myakka, 2011 is the result of a 13-day long outing and collaboration with artists and friends at the Myakka State Park in Florida, where the Florida Wild and Scenic Myakka River (its real name) flows through wetlands, woodlands and prairies. Over the course of the excursion, the group lived in a community of log cabins made from felled palms, and collaborated to create and record a series of rituals, choreographies and events. The video suggests only the loosest of narratives – self-sufficiency, a movement-based practice, and group-initiations among them – while the figures in it traverse lines between being scripted characters, and just being themselves. Overlaid with a selection of witchy soundtracks of cackling voices and cracking synth by the group SKINT, the video intentionally avoids narrative conclusion, in favor of sharing with viewers a sense of the process, investigation, and exploration by which the work came into being.

Naomi Fisher’s work weaves together a scintillating and well-worn fabric from threads that include video, painting and photography. It functions like a net through which we can see the world beyond; one made that much more beautiful by its veiled framework.

The artist would like to thank Mary Christmas, Jessie Gold, Elizabeth Hart, Erin Krause, and Stella Rey for their collaboration as performers in the video, “Myakka,” which was generously supported in part by a Knight Arts Challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

eMERGE Trade Show is proud to present its 2nd annual event which will take place in sunny Miami, FL once again, on Saturday, October 15, 2011. As the barometer continues to rise for eMERGE, the event will take place at Zadok Art Gallery, located in the Wynwood Arts District. The perfect setting where an artist can display their work and a buyer can find its muse.

Clothing companies travelled from around the world from as far as Canada and London because they believed in the eMERGE vision. Many brands that attended last year are anxiously waiting for the 2011 show, in addition to many newcomers. A larger and overall better trade show will take place this Fall and eMERGE welcomes all exhibitors, buyers and sponsors to join them in Miami.

eMERGE is an innovative fashion trade show for upcoming and emerging brands, to showcase their collections to the best boutiques and retailers. Brands attending eMERGE are breaking barriers and aren’t afraid to take risks to be a recognizable force in the market, and therefore, they will….”ARISE AND CONQUER”

Graciela Sacco | M2:Ta
This new series, named for the maximum tension per square meter, is part of the M2 project that the artist has been developing since 2007. Exploring physical as well as symbolic limits is one of the foundations of research in our modern world. The right to possess any space on this planet, however minimal, is essential to allowing individuality. But what is the minimum which would not hinder our thoughts, feelings or actions? Might this have been the issue that motivated the artist to choose the title, somehow implying that physical proximity can contamínate even a figurative independence?

Sacco is a photographer, video and installation artist. She has represented Argentina at several biennials including the Venice Biennale of 2001. Her work has been included in major exhibitions around the world. She was born in Argentina and lives and works in Spain.

Project Room
Mike Swaney | Ancient Scrolls
My work stems from an on-going, sociological investigation into human behavior. Habit, awkwardness, coincidence, embarrassment, mundane objects, funny words, and subtle absurdity in quotidian life are factors which inform my art tremendously. In searching for a meeting point between the rituals of ancient civilizations and the everyday rituals of our contemporary, digital life, I examine how one can influence and evolve the perception of the other. The relationship between painting and performance art is fundamental to my practice. I am fascinated by the possibility of performance as a static object.

Originally from Canada, Swaney now lives and works in Barcelona. His work has been exhibited internationally in Barcelona, Copenhagen, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Tokyo, Toronto and Vancouver. In 2008 he participated in the Fountainhead Residency in Miami.

Please note the extended hours for the Wynwood Art District Second Saturday Gallery Walk, from 2 to 9pm.
Exhibitions will be on view through May 7th.

Nature and introspection voice the artist’s latest insights in her long-awaited first solo exhibit.
Reprinted with permission from the original Essay by Egberto Amenas from his blog suite 101.

Earth’s Fertility, the first solo exhibit by Ileana Tolibia currently at the Edge Zones Art Center until April 29, 2001, may come about as a delayed prospect for an artist who has for long, despite her youth, hatched a voice rooted in one of the richest pictorial traditions of the Americas. She was born in Cuba and settled in the United States soon after earning an art degree in 1995 from the celebrated San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in Havana.
As the artist sought broader horizons abroad and pursued further training at the New World School of the Arts and the University of Florida, her imagery seems to have centered ever more on the primal elements of nature and the bearing of its incessant changes on the most tenacious of its creatures. Earth’s Fertility splices yet another plank on the two-way growth of Tolibia’s creative venture, whereby her configurations also chart new passageways to her spiritual chambers.

The Magic of Suggestion
Nature and introspection voice the artist’s latest insights in her long-awaited first solo exhibit.

Nature and introspection spark the bidirectional life of these late pieces. For all their voluptuous swirls, they “look” inward as well, foraying deep into the inner terra incognita from which they have sprouted. In what Baudelaire called the magic of suggestion, here an avid observer of early cultures, mythology, and the always-furtive props of the mind undergirds the gestural organicity of the artwork.
Earth’s Fertility indeed delves far into the interior lushness of nature, but without the ruse of a fit within a literal framing. Never jejune, the analogy calls instead to the free, self-defining amazonian fecundity akin to the artist’s origins and upbringing.
After all, Cuba and its inspiring frondage staged the keenest of all transculturations in the West, and this dynamic trade-off and remix of values amounted at the end to the island’s uniqueness and rarefied excellence in art. Nature there, often holding sway from its magic or marvelous appeal, supplied the feedstock for an imaginative contract with a sense of course and identity.
Transcending Flora, Cycles and Rhythms
Earth’s Fertility likewise assuages Tolibia’s urge to animate the inner self through nature and introspection. However suggestive, she gardens in this solo exhibit a proximate tangibility through a flora that grows and dances and shoots against a failed fulfillment. In a word, that life from the time of inception dangles on the throws of death.
Circling motions, or vine-like attempts to draw them, receptive sheaths, spores and warps of grass, brace a loose archetypical reference that aspires for the ultimate state of being. Earth’s Fertility, abuzz in its rhythms, enchants the viewer with perhaps a feckless antithesis to our last fatality. Meanwhile, if humans shall persist in living, imagination, timely change, and the quest for oneness will certainly ease the stay.

There will be an opening reception for “Earth’s Fertility,” on Saturday, April 9, 2011, from 2pm – 10pm. Meet the artists from 7- 10 pm at Edge Zones Art Center, 47 NE 25th Street, Miami, Florida.

Casual. Wine, cheese & crackers.

The Lunch Box Gallery is pleased to announce its new show “Arrived” by emerging Venezuelan artist, painter and illustrator M-Lon (Miguel Gonzalez) on April 9, 2011 at 310 NW. 24th St. Miami, FL 33127, starting at 7:00pm.

“Arrived” gathers 18 photographs intervened with digital illustrations (mixed media), where the artist combines photography with the use of a WACOM digital pen, thus giving life to fascinating images that equally share the participation of both reality and fantasy.

This series is born by the need to awaken reflections about our environment, by means of the visit of imaginary beings that interact with our context. These entities star in scenes of urban and natural encounters, particular or general ones, within a reality which we would consider they don’t belong to, but nevertheless where they try to find their own space.

By penetrating into an unknown society, these beings attempt to discover our world through innocent frolicking; and the behavior that sometimes seems vile or spiteful, is nothing more than a wild and instinctive interaction caused by not knowing the conduct codes of our world. In fact, these are interactions where the process of exploring turns them into personifications of feelings and moods in their maximum state of purity; emotions we can somehow relate to.

These approaches, many times nostalgic and curious but always naïve, along with their visions confronted with joy or lack of it when entering our space, are an invitation to discover, imagine and reconsider the world that surround us.

“Arrived” reflects on M-Lon’s idea that when we truly come close and stop to observe, admire and understand that all these elements, natural or man-made, mean something to someone, it is in that precise moment when we will begin to take care, enjoy and respect it all.

Nathlie Provosty
Green(ish) Hermeticism
April 8th – May 7th, 2011

Crossroads are both forbidden yet inevitable, the dangerous but profitable locus of transactions for the journeyman or merchant, a place often haunted, often sacred. Hermes, from whom the term Hermeticism is derived, controls crossroads; he is the god of communication and its opposite, silence, similarly commerce and burglary. A green Hermes, however, is nature speechless, nature crossed with commerce. As is well evident, this relationship has gone awry. It is as if the senses of man have been dissolved, because we understand very little, or nothing at all, of the living organism, namely in respect to ecology and ourselves. Green Hermetics are those who recognize life in the undercurrents (even if only in slivers), and therefore rise to challenge all forms of consciousness enslavement, to liberate the image from the machinations of mass production and the manipulations of political rhetoric. A Green Hermeticist understands that nothing is ever exactly as it seems, believes in the poetics and alchemy of ambivalence, and consequently always remains tempted to explore fuller possibilities of understanding man’s constructive and destructive impulses. By submitting to the total mystery of the materials–those means by which one communicates with, to, and through–the union of men and nature is at least obtainable in a work of art.

The paintings and drawings in this exhibition derive from sources as diverse as Giordano Bruno’s Classical and Renaissance memory techniques to specific lines from César Vallejo and William Carlos Williams poems. This exhibition will be Nathlie’s debut solo exhibition as well as her first time exhibiting in Miami, Florida.

Nathlie will be in residence at the de la Cruz collection. For information about the residency and other visiting artists please visit delacruzcollection.org.

This month, we are proud to have professional soccer player turned artist Benjamin Hollingsworth display his work in the heart of this art epicenter. As his first Miami appearance since 2010’s Art Basel, it’s an honor to have this up and coming visionary grace the Miami studio walls for April’s walk. Each Hollingsworth piece is distinctively unique, yet, with each one’s unrelentless use of color and subtle use of symbolism, the observer cannot help but to be captivated and moved.
In April, Benjamin will be exhibiting never before seen works that vary from “huge 8 x 10ft drawings on sheets of paper” and then some smaller pieces “done on top of vintage LIFE magazine covers.” Showcased pieces will be available for purchase.

About Benjamin Hollingsworth:
Until three and a half years ago, Benjamin Hollingsworth was living out his childhood dream of being a professional soccer player. At 27, amidst the height of his sporting career, Hollingsworth suffered a serious foot injury, forcing him to reconsider his life’s path.

As a release from his frustrations, he turned to art. Immersing himself in art history books and taking a self-reflecting trip to Paris– all along gallivanting galleries and museums, he found himself entirely consumed by art.

Moving to NYC on a limb, Hollingsworth further integrated himself into the art world – working in a studio by day and delving deeply into his creativity by night. However, it was not until his stepfather was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 that, ironically, he got his big break.

Compelled to leave it all, Hollingsworth returned to Charleston to support his step-father – all the while, never giving up on his new passion.

“I lived in empty building in the middle of downtown Charleston and started producing new work for an idea I had to for a solo exhibit,” he says. In May, he took advantage of the empty space for the exhibition, which put him “on the map.”

“Since then things have taken off,” he says. ” Art saved me, and helped me get over a very, very tragic event in my life.”
As one of the more recognizable up and comers in the art scene, Hollingsworth was featured in the likes of Interview and Versus magazines and has been exhibited in some of the most renowned hotels and shows around the nation, including this past year’s Art Basel.

His works:
Hollingsworth works in a very mixed media format, from installations and photographs to large scale paintings. “I think allot of it is very raw in nature but there are always underlining themes and concepts,” he says. “I tend to do things in series.”

East and Far East meet Miami at Myra Galleries

Myra Galleries

(Wynwood Art District)

Left: Kwon Soon IK. “After Working”. 90.9 x 72.7 cm. Mixed Media on canvas
Right: Phil Kyo Jang. “Capture”. 105 x 53 cm. Acrylic on canvas
From April 9 through May 31, 2011

For its second exhibition, Myra Galleries is proudly introducing artists from the eastern and far eastern parts of the world, specifically from Korea, Australia and Iran. The gallery is very excited to introduce audiences to this new exhibit and invites the public to attend the opening night event on Friday, April 8th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Artist Kwon Soon IK was born in South Korea in 1959. “In my recent works, simple and every day objects often appear as main subject matters. Those things such as bags, shoes, lighters, spoons, chopsticks, clothes, etc, are not meant for artistic practices, but the fact that I incorporate them into my work, automatically transforms these objects into a collection through which my life and emotions are permeated. There is also the use of calligraphy and raised texts in my newest body of work, some of them representing patterns of the Korean alphabet. My intention was not to be satisfied with a mere visual delivery, but to represent Korean culture and emotions through the canvas.” Kwon Soon IK has exhibited his works in museums and collections in Colombia, Uruguay, Spain, Japan, and the United States. Some of his pieces were on view at Art Basel Miami last year.

Paul Ching – Bor was born in 1963 and moved to Sydney, Australia in 1987. There he focused on watercolors, portraying primarily the suburban neighborhood of Paddington, where his studio was located. In 1990 Ching-Bor received a scholarship sponsored by Mercedes-Benz and an award from the Royal Agricultural Society for the study of fine art in New York. In the following year he received the Overseas Study Travel Grant from the Rotary Club of Camberwell, Victoria, Australia. During the next four years he saved money to make sure that he would be able to prolong his stay beyond the scholarship’s term, and in 1996 he was able to realize a long-held desire to move to New York. “When I first walked down the streets of Manhattan I was curious about the impact this strident city and the jostling crowds would have on my work,” Ching-Bor recalled. The structures, arches, and bridges immediately inspired me, and particularly suited my limited color palette. My favo rite colors are black and white, and I found I was able to tackle New York subjects in a very free way that, in the early stages, suggests abstract painting.”

Phil Kyo Jang was born in Korea in 1968. He graduated from the Department of Painting at the College of Fine Arts, Se-Jong University. This talented artist will be exhibiting for the first time in Miami. He says about his dummy figures, “The dummy is a representation of an ordinary human being. Ordinary people have no specific character but have only desire, selfishness and weakness.” Jang use humor and wit to describe humans.

Hossein Edalatkhah was born in Iran in 1979. His oil on canvas works are representing his protest against undemocratic and discriminated societies and governments especially in Iran. His work in the exhibition is a series of eight pieces titled “My body, my private life, my biography.” The artist states, “My body is my source to protest against the governmental propaganda. In my collection I decided to look back to my history so you can witness Safavieh, Qajar, Pahlavi, and Islamic Republic periods.”
Niki Kouhpayma was born in Persia in 1976. He is coming to Miami with very fresh ideas in her photos.

Powerful Show at Edge Zones 4/9/11

There will be an opening reception for Abstract
Saturday, April 9, 2011, from 2pm – 10pm.
Meet the artists from 7- 10 pm
Edge Zones Art Center
47 NE 25th Street
Miami, Florida.

Edge Zones Main Gallery ABSTRACT, a group exhibition of Florida based artists: George Bethea | Julie Davidow | John Germain | Terri Lindbloom | Ekaterina Narciso | Charo Oquet | Kathleen Staples | Ileana Tolibia | Kerry Ware | Bradley Wester

Edge Zones, one of the leading art centers in Miami, will open the vibrant exhibition featuring abstract art by ten Florida based artists, in the main gallery from April 9 – April 29, 2011. The exhibition bring together contemporary Florida artist who are creating abstract art and who employ a wide range of media seeking discerning solutions to construct and deconstruction space, utilizing streams of flowing color touching upon the perceptions of recognizable image. This thematic exhibition was a chance to showcase the essential yet powerful effect a form of art in which the artist expresses himself purely through the use of form and color. There is a wide range of stylistic diversity within this nonrepresentational framework.

Non-objective art is one of several means of transcendence of the objective, practical modern world. For John Germain, painting becomes by default an interior, subconscious journey. It is in this way that he creates forms that comply with his sensibility; where material, means and content converge. He utilizes his inconclusive yet fascinating process as an exhilarating means to self-discovery; a record of choices made over periods of time, physical and psychic visual residue.

In recent work Bradley Wester returns to the painterly gesture describing an illusionistic image on canvas. However, these new paintings are meant to be quotations of familiar images, in this case, Japanese motifs and decoration. He treats these motif-paintings simply as another everyday material or image-object that he combines with other recognizable objects to make art. He inserts and arranges them as one component of many, inside what he calls a cluster. Bradley sees each cluster as an individual and complete work of art that relates. The intention is to equalize the value of the familiar Japanese image with the common, everyday objects he uses. He treats these cluster-pieces, or pods of visual narrative that radiate out to other pod-narratives and that can be seen to mirror our hyper-linked digital age, with no start or finish, and no linear historic narrative.

Ekaterina Narciso’s, work concerns deconstruction of space found in contemporary abstract painting today. Fragments of brightly colored shards migrate in and out of picture planes echoing systems, pattern and state of flux found in nature. Kaleidoscopic portals and streams of flowing color touch upon the perceptions of recognizable image occasionally hinting at the landscapes or the city, as well as referring to the elements of nature and space.

Through the use of drawing, small mixed media objects, and painting Ileana Tolibia struggles to understand the synchronization within the unbounded space. Her transformative, organic and aerial paintings attempt to translate images of her subconscious combined with emotions and associations into a conscious language of meaningfulness.

George Bethea’s uses acrylic paint, gels, sand and other textural elements to express himself through color, surface, and design in his attempt to make paintings that are beautiful and full of life.

Julie Davidow creates contradiction, which are inherent to her work. A struggle to control and relinquish are persistent drives in her process. At once measured and defined, she embraces chance through pliage. The folds and scores in the canvas yield an aleatorical ground. Space, organization, pattern seeking, discerning solution guide a precise, meticulous investigation to map the visual information and establish structure. It is a search for the gestalt. The imagery is drawn from biological, sexual, botanical, geological, cartographic, and architectural influences; and an overall concern with the conflicts between the natural and the built environments.

Kathleen Staples paints wet on wet with fluid paints suspended in acrylic medium, obtaining a variety of transparency and texture. Each layer interacts with the layer underneath and the one above, and layers of wet paint laid down at different stages of dryness create different surface effects. She uses colors as the “soul” of the painting, an intuitive expression of her feeling.

Terri Lindbloom takes an inter-disciplinary approach. Working predominantly within multi-media installations. His conceptual work can be at times minimal and terse. In some of her “text” drawings she has been investigating the internal “chatter” within the mind, editing it down to a few sound bytes. The creative roots of her installations come from her drawing investigations, which need each other for their evolution.

Charo Oquet is interested in introducing a sense of intense chaos in her paintings, in some areas that are later covered and controlled, connected to “action paintings”. Her delivery is a sophisticated blend of complex overlapping layers and compositions.

Kerry Ware’s paintings exhibit subtle shifts of color on scrubbed surfaces. The work is infused with color similar to frescos – using painting as a source of spiritual nourishment that goes beyond labels, language, gimmicks and glitz.

Eleazar Delgado Studio Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and VIP Preview 4/7/11

Community Officials And Celebrity Socialites To Attend Eleazar Delgado Studio Ribbon Cutting Ceremony And VIP Preview In The Heart Of Wynwood Arts District
Thursday, April 7 At 6:30pm
2703 NW 2nd Avenue
Miami, FL 33127

Miami History-Inspired Artist to Unveil New Studio and “Behind the Lights” Collection, Dedicated Painting to Benefit American Red Cross

Celebrating the success of his Art Basel satellite event reception last December, fine artist Eleazar Delgado is looking forward to having his beautiful art permanently on display at the new Eleazar Delgado Studio in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District at 2703 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33127.

Community dignitaries and celebrity socialites are confirmed to attend the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and VIP Preview of Eleazar Delgado’s new creative space in the thriving Wynwood area where the artists will be presented with a proclamation from Miami-Dade county officials declaring the day “Eleazar Delgado Studio Day.” The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 7th at 6:30pm. The private, invite-only, blue-carpet affair will continue with a cocktail reception accented by cupcakes, color and creativity. The event will be hosted by an art-loving, philanthropist and socialite group of ladies, Allison Weiss Brady, Amy Rosenberg, Tina Carlo, Elena Santayana and Erin Newberg who are supporting Eleazar Delgado’s latest venture.

In light of the recent tragedy in Japan, Delgado felt it was fit to donate a dedicated piece to American Red Cross in hopes to raise much needed funds for this vital organization. American Red Cross Miami Chapter leaders will be at the event to accept the donation.

Currently on display at Eleazar Delgado Studio is the artists’ Behind the Lights collection. Created in Miami and inspired by the same, the prolific work of Eleazar Delgado’s Behind the Lights collection is a true mirror image of the beauty and complexity behind Miami’s history. Born in Oklahoma, raised in Venezuela, Eleazar returned to Miami, a city he fell in love with at first sight during his youth. He turned his love and inspiration into a beautiful collection honoring the original Miami benefactors with works entitled Julia, Flagler and Fisher, to name a few. While many choose to paint on canvas, Delgado paints on doors as a symbolic representation of the doors his subjects opened for Miami’s citizens.

“My work illuminates portals to expose the beautiful way color and light shape the relationship of Miami’s visionaries with the Magic City. Each subject chosen for this collection was a door to Miami’s development and enrichment. My visual relation tells a story, using native symbols of plants, animals, landmarks and those who had the vision to see behind the wilderness. Their enthusiasm and courage inspired this exploration of the people who shaped Miami,” said Delgado.

Eleazar Delgado has gone back to his origins, his inner voice; epic painting was his earliest fascination. Behind the Lights explores the relationship between history and art, fully illustrating the story of those who fashioned the Miami we know today. Pulling from this range of discipline, he uses bold, bright colors and geometric patterns, as his epic oil paintings take on a kinetic, 3-dimensional life. Delgado’s work honors Miami’s vibrant lifestyle and beautiful history in an expressionist yet abstract style.

A seasoned professional in the areas of architecture and interior design, US-born, Venezuelan-raised and Miami-based Eleazar Delgado has taken his Miami inspired vision, applying his research of reading between the lines and seeing behind the lights to present oil paintings as a 3-dimensional story. El Muco talk followed by the concert

www.12nights.org/Season4/season4.html

Tonight, we are presenting two exciting multi instrumental groups: El Muco from New Haven, CT and The UOM from Miami, FL.

El Muco’s Brian Kane and Scott Petersen will perform on custom designed electronic instruments, creating ambient evolving and self-sustaining sonic textures with a high degree of complexity and internal life. El Muco will talk about their instruments before the concert and invite the audience to play the instruments before and after the concert!

The UOM uses a gyroscope as a metaphor for collective improvisation. Through the exploration of current and vintage technologies, the UOM seeks the inner sanctum of sound art: the majesty of a gesture that cannot be repeated and an experience that is at once unforeseeable and inevitable.

Gallery Diet

Two 2011 Inkjet print 20″ x 30″

Gallery Diet is pleased to present Samantha Salzinger’s second solo exhibition at Diet. These works explore the fabricated environment questioning the collective mind of the age, where reality is as malleable as a simulation and a simulation as lifelike as reality. Projecting mysterious places in an era of genesis, the images reference ideologies of popular culture that play to our fantasies, fears, and deires. The metaphoric creation of the idyllic, sublime landscape, act as core unconscious escapism. Weaving together the awe of the grandeur of nature with science fiction, the viewer is dreamer in an imaginary world, optimistic of the future.

Samantha Salzinger graduated with an MFA in photography from Yale University and is a two time winner of the South Florida Cultural Consortium Grant. She has exhibited prolifically throughout South Florida at venues that include Gallery Diet, Locust Projects, The Museum of Art Ft. Lauderdale, and The Girls Club, the private collectin of Francie Bishop Good and David Horovitz where she is part of the permanent collection.

This exhibition will run thru April 2nd, 2011

University Of Miami Wynwood Project Space Presents Brian Gefen Development of Power vs. Untitled Creatures 3/12/11

University Of Miami Wynwood Project Space Presents Brian Gefen Development of Power vs. Untitled Creatures
Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 6 – 10 PM
University of Miami Wynwood Project Space,
2200-A NW 2nd Avenue
Miami.

The Department of Art and Art History, in the College of Arts and Sciences at UM presents the Master of Fine Arts exhibition by contemporary artist, Brian Gefen, beginning March 12, 2011. The exhibition titled, “Development of Power vs. Untitled Creatures” is a progressive series of narrative artwork that grasps ideas out of various 20th century artists to create an endless graphic narrative. The exhibition will be available for viewing from March 12 to March 25 at the University of Miami Wynwood Project Space, 2200-A NW 2nd Avenue, Miami.

The theme of the exhibition, Development of Power vs. Untitled Creatures, demonstrates a conflicting mythical world in which characters battle one another for food and the basic amenities of life. The mythical world exposes a system of nobility, featuring King Steamer and Queen Tatiana Dee Dee. Untitled Creatures is tribal, with leaders such as Doyleox, Helmet Jack and Hixon.

Development of Power controls the food and weapons which are heavily guarded by the security farmers who are constantly on alert because the opposing, Untitled creatures, lurk around the land in an attempt to steal food. The two groups cannot agree on anything and as a result tension grows. This discord is displayed through Brian Gefen’s series of paintings in Development of Power vs. Untitled Creatures.

Aesthetically, Brian Gefen’s painting surfaces are visually flat but complimented by many strongly contrasting color combinations and lively characters illustrating events in the ongoing, unfolding artistic drama of Development of Power vs. Untitled Creatures. Gefen uses an array of mixed media which include acrylic paint, spray paint, markers, photos, computer printouts and vinyl stickers.

For more information regarding the artist, email bgefen@aol.com. A full schedule of exhibitions can be viewed at www.as.miami.edu/art. In celebration of the exhibition’s opening, there will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, March 12, 2011 from 6 – 10 PM. Other viewing times can be arranged by appointment.

Edge Zones // Project Space Presents Cosmic She-ness Opening 3/12/11

Opening Reception for Cosmic She-ness
Saturday, March 12, 2011, from 7pm – 10pm
Edge Zones Art Center
47 NE 25th Street, Miami, Florida.

Edge Zones // Project Space Presents Cosmic She-ness, a Selection of Work from New York Based Artist Diana McClure

Edge Zones Art Center will present Cosmic She-ness, an exhibition by New York based artist Diana McClure, in the Project Space from March 12th – April 1st, 2011. The exhibition features selections from McClure’s recent body of work, Changing Woman (I’m Every Woman), which references both indigenous folklore in the form of the Changing Woman story of the Navajo, and the classic disco/R&B hit “I’m Every Woman” by Chaka Khan. Goddesses in this work are understood to act as representatives of the focus of the human mind, while icons allow a shorthand method of talking about ability, power and agency.

Engaging with the interconnectedness of concepts of Ashé, Shakti, Ch’i, The Holy Ghost, energy (sexual energy), Prana, essentially life force energy, the work explores the relationship between spiritual agency and the liberation of thought embodied in concepts of female divinity from around the world.

Using photography, small mixed media objects, and the re-contextualization of images and text as tools of construction, Cosmic She-ness continues to explore McClure’s fascination with taking the perceptual to immaterial levels.

Ms. McClure is an interdisciplinary artist who works in photography, mixed media, writing and web based projects. In 2009 she was a member of the Curatorial Committee for photoMiami, the international contemporary art fair for photo-based art, video & new media, and wrote the Living Arts column for the NewYorkTimes.com/LOCAL as part of a New York Times experimental project on hyperlocal and collaborative journalism. Diana has also written for Art Asia Pacific and The Studio Museum in Harlem magazine among others. She has received grants/fellowships from The New School for Social Research, The Mellon Foundation, and CUNY School of Journalism, although she was unable to attend.

Her photographic work has appeared in The Philadelphia African American Museum, The Los Angeles Times, Judy Chicago’s Envisioning the Future project, NYMAG.com, and in galleries across the United States. From 2007-2009 she founded and curated Cultureserve.net, a global art + culture news website that was a 2008 Finalist for a Creative Capital l Warhol Foundation – Arts Writers Grant. Diana holds a BA from Columbia University, an MA from The New School, and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Hernan Bas, A Forest Through the Forests, 2011

Fredric Snitzer Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Miami-born artist Hernan Bas. March 12 – April 14 2011

Though recently transplanted to Detroit, Michigan, Hernan Bas is still considered one of South Florida’s most celebrated artists and one of its most prolific—turning out many-layered compositions depicting naturalist themes, compelling subjects, and symbolism that is both manifest and mysterious. References to the Romantic poets, the American transcendentalists and mythology appear prominently in his work. His signature inspired landscapes reveal an abiding love for, and faith in the transformative powers of nature. But Bas’s landscapes are as concealing as they are revealing.

In the large-scale panoramic painting, The Road Ahead is Golden…Silver…Bronze, the largest work the artist has done to date, an isolated male figure sits by a stream nursing a bloodied shin. Not too far off, a white car comes to a stop having careened down a ravine, and further in the distance rusted bits of cars—shells of earlier wrecks—meld with the landscape like relics as a color palette of burnished gold, silver and bronze washes over the panels, weaving through the greens, blues and browns of swirled brushwork, both illuminating and abstracting the scene.

In this painting, and in other works in the show, the artist skillfully plays with the tension between what you see and what you don’t, as he aims to strike a new balance between abstraction and representation. For an artist heretofore interested in creating scenes with more focused narratives, this new interest in abstract issues is both a departure and an evolution.

Charles Burchfield’s uniquely rendered landscapes with their passionate expression and eerie qualities are strong influences here, as are the bold lines of block prints and silkscreen techniques that inform this new work. The artist includes several large-scale works on paper in the exhibition.

The Forest for the Trees continues through April 14, 2011.

The compositions themselves at first appear complex given the wide variety of textures, however the juxtaposition of the simplistic figurative elements serves to provide the viewer with an effortless, yet refined resolution.

Seminar Description:
Greg Pitts was once a shy artist, like many others. When he came to display his work publicly, he realized he was his own best advocate. Learn how he transformed himself from shy artist to outgoing salesperson and how this transformation enhances his career as an artist immensely.

The night opens with time for socializing and networking with complimentary beverages and bites provided by Life Is Art. After the seminar, there is time for further specific questions and more networking. This is an excellent opportunity to come meet other working artists and arts professionals from around the area.

Greg Pitts Biography:
Greg Pitts started out life at a disadvantage. Being born to a single parent and growing up without a father figure made life less than ideal. He did not meet his father until the age of 12. As a young teen, he exhibited artistic capabilities, however the lack of understanding and from his family lead to discouragement. He continued to strive to express himself artistically. He purchased his first camera on lay-a-way from a camera store in his hometown.

His artistic eye and fashion sense while a senior in high school lead to him was offered admission to a prestigious fashion design school, but because of stereotypical attitudes, students at school would call him a nerd and at home no one would assist him in the application process, stating that “that kind of stuff is for sissies,” Discouraged, he graduated without any formal plans. Later, he joined the Army in order to provide for his soon to be born son. Despite this difficult start in life, he continued to express his artistic side. He’s also an awarding winning filmmaker and photographer having taken photos of celebrities from Sean “P. Diddy” Coombs to Mary J. Blige, Tom Joyner, Robin Thicke and the late Teena Marie.

Greg Pitts abstract artwork has been compared to that of abstract expressionist artist Jackson Pollock. He is a featured artist at the G.A.B Studio in the Wynwood Art District in Miami, Florida.

Mr. Pitts first gained national recognition by making the top story on Google News on May 9, 2009 with a feature article being published about his work in EV Living Magazine.

He was one of 20 national semi-finalist photographers selected by W Magazine for their “Obsession” photographic contest in 2010. His artwork has sold in Berlin, San Francisco, Vienna Austria, Chicago and Ohio and is currently on exhibit in the Netherlands and in Stanford a town on the Cape Whale Coast of South Africa.

Mr. Pitts participated in Miami Art Basel 2010 and was successful-selling 3 of his original paintings. He can be contacted by email at blkjacksonpollock@bellsouth.net. Some of his abstract art can be viewed at www.BlackJacksonPollock.com.

Photojournalist Jipsy Solo Show Just As You Were at Butter Gallery Opening Celebration 3/8/11

Photojournalist Jipsy Debuts First Solo Show
Just As You Were At Wynwood’s Butter Gallery

Miami-based photographer Jipsy will celebrate the opening of her first solo show, Just As You Were, on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 pm at Wynwood’s Butter Gallery. Guests will enjoy champagne and wine selections throughout the night. The exhibit will remain on view through April 2, free and open to the public by appointment.

Just As You Were was curated from thousands of photographs taken by Jipsy herself from 2005 to the present. A prominent nightlife fixture since arriving to Miami in 1996, Jipsy’s photos tell a story with captivating colors, stories and characters.

“When it comes to why I love documenting the night life, I have to say it’s all about ‘the party’. The characters, the fashion, the music, the debauchery… There’s another side of Miami nightlife that the glossy magazines don’t always show. I gravitate to the people who dress up in their own style and are usually not in the VIP. Most of the time these are the people who stood on line, paid their entrance and came to dance without any intention of being in front of the camera. Add them to the mix of great music and a beautifully lit club, and its magic. I want to bring that feeling to the viewer,” says Jipsy.

Jipsy studied photography at the Art & Design High school in New York City. Always obsessed with freeze framing “the” moment, Jipsy began exploring the nightlife of Manhattan at the early age of 14. With her camera in tow, Jipsy became a staple of the underground dance culture in the 1980s and documented her experiences with the scenesters and club kids. Jipsy continued her fascination with photography into the ‘90s by posting photos of her friends and acquaintances on various websites. By 2002, Jipsy set her sights on the fashion scene and ran her own vintage clothing store on eBay. By posting photos of Miami’s club kids she was able to drive traffic to her virtual store. She finally launched her eponymous website, NefariousGirl.com, in 2004. Thousands of partygoers log on weekly to see if they were snapped.

Jipsy has photographed hundreds of events and parties around the country. Locally, Jipsy has documented nightclubs through the years including The District, PS 14, Pawn Shop, Space and Vagabond. She has also photographed infamous personalities such as Patricia Fields, Alejandro Calvani, Aimme Philips, Lara Coppola Estefan, David LaChapelle, Joey Arias, Susanne Bartsch, Ladyfag, Heatherette, Juliette Lewis, Peaches, Santigold, The Stills, Living Things, Ave D, The Sounds, The Bravery and many more.

Jipsy has been featured in countless publications including MIAMI Magazine, Ocean Drive, Miami New Times, The SunPost, City Link, Spin, Map, Black Book, Inked and Women’s Wear Daily.

For more information on Jipsy, please visit www.nefariousgirl.com or find her on Facebook. Fans can also follow her nightlife exploits on Twitter at @nefariousgirl.

Opening its doors in 2008, Butter Gallery has since brought everything from the overlooked to the sublime to the Miami art scene. Featuring premier South Florida artists and now encompassing international artists, Butter has brandished bold contemporary art ranging from the no-holds-barred graffiti stylings of Ahol Sniffs Glue to the digital metamorphosis of Yuri Tuma. Under the aegis of artist and curator Francisco “Paco” De La Torre IV, Butter Gallery has revived the religious dichotomy of Rick Falcon and breathed life into the contemporary chaos of Tawnie Silva. Wanting to escape was the easy part.
Taking place in 1986 and 1998 and based on a true story, three poor, Black kids in rural Mississippi reap the consequences of their family’s cycle of abuse, addiction, and violence. They independently struggle to escape their circumstances and must decide whether to confront what’s plagued their family for generations or succumb to the same crippling fate, forever damned in Mississippi. Bitterly honest and profoundly subtle, writer/directorTina Mabry successfully captures growing up in a world where possibilities and opportunities seem to die in the face of the suffocating reality of physical and sexual abuse, obsession, and a myriad of destructive compulsions.

The winner of multiple awards from film festivals all over
the country, Mississippi Damned, is an unforgettable cinematic journey that can not be missed. Heralded by critics as “a credible and stirring depiction of the type of place most American moviegoers are probably more familiar with than they think, but rarely get to see on screen.”

Cafeina Presents Brunch N’ Bazaar Sundays Featuring Open-Air Market Curated By Launche Arte 2/20/11

February 20, 11am-4pm
Cafeina
297 Northwest 23rd Street
Wynwood Art District

Cafeina, in conjunction with Supermarket Creative, is proud to present the debut of its weekly garden-and-gallery breakfast series “Brunch N’ Bazaar” on Sunday, February 20, 2011, featuring a pop-up restaurant in the gallery that allows for indoor dining and an open-air market curated by New York-based Launche Arte. Guests will enjoy a newly designed menu by Executive Chef Leo Gutierrez that includes both health-conscious and hangover-cure selections, along with $20/two-hour unlimited mimosas. DJ duo Ess & Emm will direct the musical score, ranging from Brazilian Jazz to French Pop, while patrons shop and indulge in additional treats including table-side Bloody Mary’s, ‘made your way’ by Cafeina’s team of mixologists.

Chef Leo has created two distinct menus for the Wynwood lounge and gallery’s first daytime series, each crafted to satisfy a specific craving. The “Conscious” menu aims to indulge the healthy soul, offering refreshing brunch dishes including Shrimp Ceviche, marinated with passion fruit, red pepper, jalapeno, cilantro, red onion and avocado; and Baked Apple-Cinnamon French Toast, made on whole wheat bread and served with seasonal berries. The “Hangover” selections, made to absorb the affects of one’s pre-brunch vices, includes hearty dishes such as Pan-seared T-Bone Rib Eye, served with grilled asparagus, fried eggs and roasted tomato sauce; and The Boss Omelet, a combination of manchego cheese, ham, fresh tomato sauce and toast. Guests are also encouraged to bring their pets and enjoy pooch-friendly gourmet offerings including Lite Chicken & Veggies, served with brown rice, as well as Oatmeal Berries & Biscuits, made with whole wheat flower.

Cafeina mixologsts will also offer refreshing libations such as Blueberry Ginger Bellini pitchers; Cute Cumber martinis, made with gin, St. Germain liqueur, lime juice and simple syrup; and the Bloody Maria, a south-of-the-border interpretation of the classic Bloody Mary, served with tequila and garden varietals. Additional brunch refreshments include a full coffee selection and a variety of natural juices and smoothies.

Founded in New York City by Alex Pabon and Chelsea Conklin in April 2010, Launche Arte aims to give artists, designers and entrepreneurs an outlet to be discovered. The Miami bazaar will be housed within Cafeina’s lush 5,000-square-foot garden with over 15 vendors showcasing a variety of products including: jewelry and accessories, vintage, fashion, floral, pastries and an international news-stand. The first installment will include crystal retailer and tarot card reader Donna Hughes; handmade silk dresses by SeaSatin Couture; designer menswear such as Alexander McQueen and Dsquared, sold by Beau Beasley; and watches by Time-Peace, amongst others. For market vendor inquiries contact reservations@launcharte.com.

Anjunabeats Room Ultra Music Week Lineup at Ice Palace 3/24/11

Anjunabeats In Miami 2011
Thursday, March 24th, 9:30pm – 6am
Ice Palace, 59 NW 14th St, Miami
59 NW 14th Street
Miami, FL
www.madeevent.com

Inhabiting the two rooms of the massive Ice Palace venue for a huge all-star event, Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats In Miami party is their biggest gig in the city to date and features a transatlantic array of the most forward-thinking names in trance and progressive music.

Following two years of sell-out parties at Karu & Y and with early bird tickets selling out in just a few days, the Ice Palace spectacular looks set to be a cornerstone event for any electronic music fan visiting Miami during this year’s party week.

Top of the bill will be the headline set from Above & Beyond themselves. With anticipation around their forthcoming Group Therapy album building and lead single “Sun & Moon” recently unveiled, Above & Beyond’s set promises to be everything their many fans would hope for – an exclusive showcase of new material and unreleased anthems from their legendary Anjunabeats imprint.

Recently reunited for a very select handful of shows, progressive trance masters Gabriel & Dresden will be Above & Beyond’s special guests for the night, alongside legendary names like German powerhouses Cosmic Gate and Kyau & Albert, ascendant Finnish duo Super8 & Tab and trance trailblazer Mat Zo. Completing the main room line-up is the exceptionally gifted Canadian producer, Soundprank.

With their biggest Miami party yet, Above & Beyond are taking things to the next level, something they have been making a habit of lately. Just last December, the UK-based trio celebrated the 350 th episode of their Trance Around The World show with a marathon 7-hour broadcast from L.A.’s Hollywood Palladium. Not only did the event sell out in an unprecedented 24 hours, but it also went on to become the world’s number one trending topic on Twitter.

Such fanaticism and fervour follows Above & Beyond wherever they go. Each week over 30 million people eagerly tune in to their Trance Around The World show, fans regularly send in tattoos of Anjunabeats logos or Above & Beyond song lyrics and their DJ sets inspire scenes of explosive euphoria the world over.

Anjunabeats In Miami on March 24th will be Above & Beyond’s ONLY appearance of Miami party week. Stay tuned for more details on the show including next week’s announcement of the Anjunadeep room line-up. To add to the excitement, Sirius XM Radio will be broadcasting live from the main room all night, via its Area channel.

Early bird tickets have sold out but general admission tickets are on sale now! www.madeevent.com

The Pinker Tones, Panic Bomber and Mr. Pauer Live at The Awarehouse 2/19/11

Saturday, February 19, 9:00pm – 1:00am
The Awarehouse
550 NW 29 ST
Miami, FL

Widely acclaimed musicians The Pinker Tones, Panic Bomber, and Mr. Pauer will all partake in a global electro show in Wynwood’s Awarehouse on Saturday, February 19th, 2011 at 9pm.

Buy tickets Online!

Together these three acts will bring a unique mix to one of Miami’s premier venues in Wynwood. The Pinker Tones, coming from Barcelona, will provide the indie electro pop sounds to Panic Bomber’s intense rock and punk take on the genre. Rounding out the set will be Venezuelan DJ/producer/remixer Mr. Pauer with his cumbia, new wave, and electronic world music. The Awarehouse provides the ideal setting for such a show, with its outdoor video-sculpture courtyard and spacious indoor main room, bar, and loft.

The Pinker Tones mix equal parts electronic funk, electric guitars, and latin psychedelia and their energetic stage antics leave you wondering how much longer you can keep on jumping.
www.pinkertones.com

Panic Bomber’s sound is probably best describe electro-brass-funk with whipping vocals. The act originally started out as a single dj/producer but he now brings so much more to the stage.
www.myspace.com/panicbomber

Mr. Pauer is a Miami based DJ/producer with a cult following in the city. His mixes are so eclectic that you can expect to hear anything from electro-samba to a new wave induced cumbia. While the combination might sound odd, trust us when we say that you’ll be wanting more.

“What people see, eventually, is only what’s already inside them.” Thomas Ruff

The theme of sex and pornography is not novel in art. Gustav Courbet’s “L’Origine du monde” 1866 (“Origin of the World”), remains even today a controversial piece. It is held that its insistent focus on the female’s torso and genitals objectifies and dehumanizes his subject, rendering it thus pornographic. Inarguably in its most shallow interpretation it is an iconic “sex image” that has inspired and caused numerous reinterpretations by contemporary artists. A primal curiosity towards this type of image becomes the fountain from which the artist has chosen to express his or her own intimate relation to a sexual experience and a reaction to the image that affects them. Today our environment is understood, interpreted and defined through “image” and its rapid digital exchange. If we accept mass media as a propagator of the “sex image” then the artist’s response is closely connected to its effects.

RALF PETERS | 100 Masterpieces
Parody, the ‘song sung awry‘ is an underrated artistic form. It is often through works of comedy that we feel tragedy or happiness most profoundly. Only later does reason confirm what has become softly embedded at the level of recognition.
Peters’ 100 Masterpieces do this outstandingly well. They do not demand momentous change. The comic does not deliberately try to evoke the tragic. It is inside you from the beginning. You go on to each golden frame so that, smiling, you can store the next insight under your skin. Parody offers a lingering pleasure, an agreeable moment of recognition. –Heinz Kattner

Peters was born in Germany, where he studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in Munich and the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste in Braunschweig. He also studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nimes, France. His work has been exhibited throughout Europe, as well as North and South America.

Project Room: Gerry Stecca
The concept of repetition reaches its climax with each one of the CLOTHESPINS series’ compositions, formed by hundreds or thousands of clothespins. Each one is hand-drilled and connected to the next by wire and a great deal of patience.
Mostly non-representational, these shapes and installations gain life and form, growing and expanding like a virus in a perfect environment as they are put together, ever-surprising the artist as well as the viewer.
An underlying message of conservationism, recycling and environmental awareness is obvious in this series, as the material used represents small devices of energy conservation as well as nostalgic reminders of a simpler time. –Gerry Stecca

Originally from Venezuela, Stecca has lived and worked in Miami for twenty years. He graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a degree in Visual Arts. He actively exhibits his work here and abroad.

Dates: From Feb 12 through 28, 2011

J.G. Platform is proud to present the first group exhibition in its new location. The show entitled “Sauvage” will show work from international artists, each working on a variety of mediums and concepts. These works come together to introduce the new space in the Wynwood Art District. Join us for the opening reception this Saturday, February 12th, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. The exhibit runs thru the month of February.

JG Platform would like to be a perpetual inventory of artwork of international emerging, recognized, well known or unknown artists. Painting, sculpture, photography, documentary, fabrics or more have their place in the space. The selection of artwork should lead the visitors to get a juxtaposition of visions, to feel a fusion between different artistic representations, to discover art in the daily object we use, and finally to decide to have this art at home. Visiting the gallery must invite the visitor to undertake a journey throughout the society and the world.

A private collection of African objects will support the necessary recognition to the unknown primitive artists who are the roots of the modern art. Mixing from time to time artifacts from different countries and contemporary art will show how strong the interactive relations between the cultures are.

Opening Reception Voyage on Uncanny Seas 2/11/11

Opening Reception Friday, February 11th, 2011 6 – 8 PM
174 NW 23 Street
Miami, Florida 33127

The exhibition Voyage on Uncanny Seas convenes a collection of visual artists committed to a focused consideration of the Ocean. Two resent significant marine events function as the polar opposite touchstones for the conceptual framework of the exhibition.

The first is the occasion of the completion of the decade long Census of Marine Life, the world’s largest scientific collaboration which brought together 2,700 scientists from 80 nations to conduct over 530 expeditions of discovery to develop a comprehensive view of the past, present and future of life in the world’s seas. This resulted in the finding of more that 6000 new species, of which only 1500 have been thus far described. The oceans were affirmed as the site of mega-biodiversity, and animals and plants of uncanny strangeness and wondrous behavior were brought to light.

The second touchstone is the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, an environmental catastrophe of such dreadful magnitude that its extensive damage to marine habitats will be felt for decades to come. Between April 20th and September 19th 2010, over 4,900,000 barrels of crude oil escaped into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, creating an 80 square mile kill zone.

Lausberg Contemporary presents “Lollipop” by Regine Schumann
Saturday, February 12, 2011. 7:00 p.m.
Lausberg Contemporary, Miami
1929 NW 1st Avenue
Miami, FL 33136
www.galerie-lausberg.com

Dates: From February 12 through March 16, 2011

Regine Schumann lives and works in Cologne, Germany. From 1986 to 2007 Schumann was granted numerous scholarships from prominent institutions in Germany, Italy and the UK. In 2006, she was nominated for the 3rd International Painting Prize of the Castellon County Council (at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Castellon, Spain) and in the same year obtained the Leo Breuer prize from the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn (Rhine Regional Contemporary Art Museum, Bonn). She has appeared in numerous gallery solo exhibitions in Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Japan, Italy, the UK and the United States, as well as in renowned museums and cultural centers, such as Candela Villa Zanders, Berg / Gladbach und Stdtisches Museum Engen; the Celle Art Museum; and the Schloss Neuenbrg, Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe.

In 2009 she participated with Galerie Lausberg, Dsseldorf and Lausberg Contemporay, Toronto in the Los Angeles Art Show, Art Chicago, Art Miami and Art Toronto. For the 2009 LA Art Show, Schumann presented her Dream Team Installation. In 2010, she presented Black Box at Art Miami. Last year, she additionally exhibited at the Frauenmuseum, Bonn, the Vasarely Museum, Budapest, Art Rotterdam, Art Paris, Art Amsterdam and Art Santa Fe.

As the names for her exhibitions and installations insinuate, Schumann plays with color, light, transparency and optical illusion using her intense and unique color and material sensibility to delight and impress the viewer. Among her exhibition titles are: Transparency – Looking Through, Night Owls, Art of Light, Light Tunnel, Chameleon, Day and Night, the Glow, Color Mirror, and Lollipop. Lollipop debuts in the U.S. at Lausberg Contemporary, Miami opening Saturday February 12th from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Show runs February 12th to March 16th, 2011. We remind our visitors that Lausberg Contemporary, Miami has ample parking on its premises.

“Black Box Glowing was my first solo show at Art Miami 2010, presented in cooperation with Galerie Lausberg, Dsseldorf and Galerie Bender, Munich. All translucent acrylic glass works or flexible plastic woven works were shown under black lights, which created a light aura surrounding each work and distributed a shimmering reflection to the nearby walls. My upcoming solo show at Lausberg Contemporary, Miamis Wynwood Art District location will look like a “White Space Glowing”, as most of the fluorescent works also have a radiant quality during normal daylight hours. Only the special installation Lollipop will be displayed under black lights.”
“I react to certain places with a desire to be challenged by their unique qualities of space and light. I factor into my creations both the significance of historical and current usages, which constitute the backdrop for my projections. For me, space is like a mantle that surrounds a bright idea. Through my intense involvement with fluorescent bodies and black light, being surrounded by my works day and night, I am keenly aware of the chameleon-like changes in these art objects. These subtle changes are key to my art. I am interested in affecting the radiant qualities of my works. My objects change continuously from day to night. During daylight hours, the surface of the Plexiglas reveals the reflection of the perceiver, hence the name “colormirror”. In darkness, under black lights, the works’ luminosity is magically highlighted, at times glowing intensely with aura. The colormirror surfaces, smooth and sharp-edged by day, under the blacklight look mysteriously dif fuse, almost matte to the naked eye. The Plexiglas seems to become immaterial. The installation Lollipop, 2009 at the Kloster Gravenhorst artists house consisted of a circular arrangement of thick bundles of fluorescent tubes in different colors. The diameter of this circular source of illumination was almost 15 feet. The experience of viewing this installation is akin to viewing a busy highway by night, with traces of light appearing on the retina as aftereffects of rapid movement.”

Inverses by Rodolfo Vanmarcke 2/12/11

Inverses by Rodolfo Vanmarcke
02/12/11, 7pm
The Lunch Box Gallery
310 NW. 24th St. Miami, FL 33127
www.thelunchboxgallery.com

The Lunch Box Gallery is pleased to announce its new show “Inverses,” a mind-bending exhibit by acclaimed Venezuelan photographer Rodolfo Vanmarcke on February 12, 2011 at 310 NW. 24th St. Miami, FL 33127.

The exhibition features 15 photographs from “Inverso-símil” and “Inverso-símil en Clave Cóncava,” two renowned photograph series shot by Vanmarcke. Both series are designed to challenge the natural way we observe our everyday world by means of a devious visual experiment; Vanmarcke reshapes common landscapes and urban scenes by “maliciously” inverting his captured images and using (as close accomplices) the reflection of rainwater puddles and a magnifying glass.

The result is a stunning visual effect that challenges us to view the common in a new way, combining two sides of a coin in a single image — the right way up and the wrong way down, the real and the imagined, the possible and the impossible, the within and the without; unthinkably merging multiple scenarios that cause confusion in the viewer when discovering them. At the end, images that appear to be digital manipulation are actually real photographs preconceived to exist upside down, inside out.

By integrating documentary photography with surrealism, Vanmarcke forces the viewer to untiringly pursue the regulatory intervention of reason, arising in him a fight between his perceptions vs. recognition.

In conclusion, these series inverse the natural order of things to play with the implausible factor in the viewer: Perception is subjective and images that seem to be true, are not necessarily so. It’s up to the viewer to decide.

Come out before the monthly Wynwood Art Walk and explore Wynwood like never before while riding around during the day.

Enjoy some of the following activities during the Wynwood Art Ride:

– Enjoy a Graffiti tour of Wynwood. Check out the amazing graffiti that has transformed the neighborhood into a world class street art destination.
– Get a first hand look at the famous Wynwood Walls while enjoying specially discounted beverages at the Wynwood Kitchen and Bar.
– Explore the galleries, graffiti, and artists of 24th Street and get a custom made Wynwood T-shirt made in front of your eyes by the Wynwood T-Shop. A variety of galleries are opening just for Wynwood Art Ride participants.
– Speak one on one with gallery curators and owners.
– Enjoy a special “sneak peak” reception at the new Miguel Paredes Arts Studio. See the new (relocated) local artist studio / gallery before everyone else – including those going to the grand opening party later that same night. Take that high society!
– All that biking got you hungry? We will be ending down the street from the weekly Wynwood Food Truckers Meetup. Chow down on dozens of food delights from a variety of popular food trucks after the ride.
– Got more energy? Have your own “after-party” and let loose to enjoy the Wynwood Art Walk that evening. Enjoy the rest of Wynwood on your own on the best night of the month.

Live Performances by NYC’s Legendary Joey Arias

Kiwi Gallery will celebrate the opening of its permanent home in Wynwood with the Love Pop Party. The grand opening event will be held on Saturday, February 12th,, from 7pm to 11pm, during the Arts District’s 2nd Saturday Art Walk. The LOVE Pop Party will feature live performances by legendary New York cabaret artist, Joey Arias; South Florida’s Bambi Le Fleur’s Burlesque Revue; music by local favorite, DJ Jody McDonald; and a complimentary bar by Miami’s own Delaplaine Sparkling Wine. South Beach nightlife legend Gary James and public relations and events maven Heather Davis, along with KIWI’s own Louis Canales, will host Miami’s movers and shakers attending the gallery’s opening night.

KIWI Gallery is currently exhibiting the work of Miami Beach fine art photographer William John Kennedy. The Kennedy collection comprises rare and historic images of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana with their soon-to-be iconic works. The photographs, taken in the early 1960s at a time when Kennedy forged a friendship with both Indiana and Warhol, capture the two artists at the seminal point of their careers and the birth of the Pop Art Movement. After nearly half a century in storage, a select number of the nearly forgotten images have been carefully chosen and published for the first time in a limited edition of silver gelatin prints. The Kennedy collection debuted at a pop-up gallery in Miami Beach during Art Basel 2010 to rave reviews, with the exhibition experiencing record attendance with stronger than expected sales. A documentary, “Full Circle: Before They Were Famous,” chronicling the images’ journey from the days they were taken to the present, premiered at the Colony Theatre during the esteemed art marathon. According to Tom Austin in AOL/Paper (artbasel.aol.com) it was “One of the best—and most surreal evenings—of Art Basel.” A special screening of the short film, open to the public, will be held at 6:30pm, prior to the LOVE Pop Party.

Sponsored by Delaplaine Sparkling Wine (www.champagnedelaplaine.com) and MiamiArtZine.com (www.miamiartzine.com), a program of Miami Beach Arts Trust and a key resource for the South Florida arts scene.

The Department of Art and Art History, in the College of Arts and Sciences at UM presents the Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Sean Smith on view beginning April 9th, 2011. Focusing on stimulating all five senses, Creativity Driven by Southern Hospitality, is Sean Smith’s attempt to create Gesamtkunstwerk (Total Art). Smith agrees with a Richard Wagner essay titled, “The Artwork of the Future,” where he mentions the combination of the arts through theater. He describes that this is the clearest and most profound way to present folklore or cultural identity.

By exploring the creative process through performance, functional sculptures, contemporary abstract paintings, and postmodern ideas on art and its possibilities, Smith will entice and invite the viewer not only to enjoy his work as a spectator but also to participate in multiple creations displayed during his Southern Hospitable Artistic Happening. Creativity Driven by Southern Hospitality will be on view from April 9 to May 1, 2011 at UM’s Wynwood Project Space – 2200A NW 2nd Avenue. With their ability to convey power and emotion, rock and art are natural bedfellows, even though Dwayne Johnson is quite a bit younger than Garfunkel. Linking them together in slightly less hot-yet-tender fashion, the Art Of Rock Gala.

AORG is a booze-/ grub-loaded gala celebrating the work of eight big-deal graphic artists with a knack for morphing rock music into clever visuals before painstakingly hand-printing them, basically elevating the concert poster into art, which sounds completely gross if you’re still thinking about Garfunkel.

The photography will be on view at the UM Wynwood Project Space located at 2200A NW 2nd Avenue in Miami. Opening reception is Saturday, Feb 12th from 6 to 10 pm.

FotoKonbit is a movement created to engage and empower Haitians to tell their own stories and document their communities through photography. By partnering with established Haitian grassroots organizations in Haiti and in the Haitian Diaspora, FotoKonbit is uniquely positioned to inspire hope through creative expression and provide Haitians with the opportunity to document their reality and share it with the largest possible audience.

Seminar Description:
One of the most difficult and confusing aspects of business has always been public relations and marketing. How do you get the media to take notice of you? Julia Wakefield is a public relations and marketing professional who currently works for Schwartz Media, a powerful public relations firm with clients such as the Miami Art Museum and the Adrienne Arsht Center. She is speaking on matters of marketing and media relations. Her topics include an overview of everything from starting a blog to creating a Facebook page to writing a press release. Plus, she is going to give tips on which media to contact, both locally and nationally. This is a seminar that no working artist should miss.

The night opens with time for socializing and networking with complimentary beverages and bites provided by Life Is Art. After the seminar, there is time for further specific questions and more networking. This is an excellent opportunity to come meet other working artists and arts professionals from around the area.

BabyAnne – “Bottom Heavy” CD Release Tour!

Since she released her renowned debut Mix CD, Bassqueen: In The Mix, in 1999, Baby Anne has represented a movement of funky bass driven music, constantly innovating and morphing yet staying true to her Miami Bass roots in electronic music.

Baby Anne is hailed as one of the originators of fusing 808 bass and breakbeats, providing a alternative to the 4 on the floor sounds that are prevalent on the dance floor.

Whether rocking clubs and festivals in such diverse places as Amsterdam, Spain, El Salvador or Guatamela or criss-crossing the U.S. and Canada on a weekly basis, the first female of bass maintains a relentless touring schedule.

Baby Anne is set to release her tenth – and quite possibly best – mix album, Bottom Heavy, the first week of February 2011. Featuring originals and remixes by Baby Anne herself longside tunes that are huge in her live shows, it’s set to devastate the club massive thru-out 2011.

Baby Anne is the Bassqueen, a title that speaks for itself, and her new mix “Bottom Heavy” is a nonstop sixty plus minutes of adventure, fusing her bass sound with the likes of electro house, dirty dutch and breaks, always with the sensibilities of the big bottom end sound she is famous for.

In The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche insists that Socrates would only truly be a philosopher if he were to become a musician. For Nietzsche, music – and all art – reveals what philosophy cannot and affects us in ways that dialectic could never reach. It reveals the tragic, gives us insights, brings us joy, and takes us out of ourselves. By becoming musicians – in a broad sense – we transform ourselves. Although Nietzsche may have called himself an “immoralist” – and certainly didn’t believe in good and evil – he has a strong sense of what it would mean to be “better” human being, through art.

Bruce Ellis Benson is Professor of Philosophy at Wheaton College and Visiting Professor at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium). His philosophical work is influenced by Hegel, Edmund Husserl and Phenomenology, and the hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer. He is the co-founder of the Society for Continental Philosophy and Theology. Benson has served as Visiting Scholar at the New School for Social Research, New York. He is the author of Pious Nietzsche: Decadence and Dionysian Faith (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2008), The Improvisation of Musical Dialogue: A Phenomenology of Music (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2003); Graven Ideologies: Nietzsche, Derrida, and Marion on Modern Idolatry (Downers Grove, Ill.: IVP, 2002). He is at work on a study of art and improvisation.

Just off their world tour with Gorillaz. Debut Miami performance!

“They might be called Little Dragon, but this Swedish electro-pop group makes music that’s anything but small. From the spun sugar with soul of “My Step” to the Mariah Carey-meets-Friendly Fires tweeting tropical beat of “Runabout”, pop perfection comes naturally to this four-piece” – Nylon Magazine

“The band from Gothenberg has been revolutionizing the pop scene since their first self titled album. At first listen, Little Dragon seems like so much more than a pop band. With absolutely amazing and soulful vocals from lead singer Yukimi Nagano and sometimes trippy synth sounds you can sometimes forget you are listening to Pop. Their ability to blend catchy and interesting were displayed on their first album and they continue to do this with Machine Dreams, an album that harvests the electrifying energy of their live performance.” – URB Magazine

“Based in Gothenberg, Sweden and signed to British label Peacefrog, the fact that Little Dragon can tour in North America with only two studio albums under their belt — and limited radio airplay — is a testament to their viral popularity.” – NBC Washington

Photographs of Life is Art Creative Connections 8 on 1/18/11

Life is Art Creative Connections 8 at GAB Studio in Wynwood on Tuesday, January 18, 2011.  We had a great crowd and everyone had a great time.

We had Reed V. Horth from Robin Rile Fine Art Gallery doing the presentation.  Reed spoke  about how to approach a gallery and prepare your portfolio to best showcase your work. How best to introduce yourself to the gallerist. How to make a good impression. What the galleries are looking for, in terms of presentation.

Reed has worked as a gallerist and art dealer for many years and will give you some insight into that side of the business so you can better present yourself and your work.

Next month the seminar will be on February 15th at GAB Studio presentation by Julia Wakefield.  Julia will be talking about marketing and media relations.  Check out Life is Art at www.lifeisartfest.org for more details and rsvp information.
