Local Filmmaker Max Emerson Debuts Two Films During Miami Gay And Lesbian Film Festival 2011
Tuesday, April 26, 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
1111 Lincoln Road
South Beach, FL

Emerson’s short films are part of MGLFF’s new “Made in Miami” program supporting local talent

On Tuesday, April 26, 2011 local filmmaker Max Emerson will host the world premiere of his short films Earwig and DipSpit on the seventh floor of the 1111 Lincoln Road parking garage building in South Beach. The screening is part of a new Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (MGLFF) program entitled “Made in Miami,” which highlights the city’s best new, local talent. Additional short films screening at the event include Tale of Two Balls and Hearts and Hotel Rooms, made by local filmmaker Justin James.

The seventh floor of the 1111 building will be modeled after a post-modern drive-in movie theater from the 1950s, complete with waiters on roller skates. “The whole space is outdoors so you can see every location showcased in my movies – both of which were completely filmed in Miami – from any point in the building,” says Emerson. University of Miami drama students will also be on hand to add a fun performance element to the event. Guests will enjoy passed bites and beverages by Shake Shack and cocktails by Brown-Forman (Jack Daniels, Finlandia, Herradura and Chambord Vodka).

“‘Made in Miami” will also serve as a fundraiser ($10 minimum donation is encouraged) for a new film festival program called SOS – Save Our Stories, which promotes script and story submissions from the LGBT community. The best pieces are guided through every step of the filmmaking process with the help of local industry professionals. No RSVP necessary as the event is running on a first come, first served basis.

About Max Emerson:
Max Emerson, “Sam” (Dipspit), “Max” (Earwig), Writer/Director/Producer (both films), is making his directing and writing debut with MGLFF. He grew up a “River Rat” at the Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach, FL and has been working as a professional actor/model since the age of fourteen. Executive chef Paula DaSilva and 1500°, the popular new farm-to-table dining destination in the Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach, are hosting Chefs for a Cure, an exquisite five-course dinner prepared by a stellar line-up of star chefs and benefitting the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 7 p.m. To honor a close friend who succumbed to the disease last year, DaSilva called on fellow chef friends – Dean Max of 3030 Ocean, Michael Bloise of American Noodle Bar, Timon Balloo of Sugarcane, Sean Brasel of Meat Market and Hedy Goldsmith, pastry chef at Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink – to come together and create something delicious for a wonderful cause.

“Chefs for a Cure is a wonderful opportunity to bring incredibly talented chefs together to raise money for cancer research,” says DaSilva. “And the American Association for Cancer Research is a wonderful organization to support. Last year, my dear friend Leah Caputo lost her 11-year battle to breast cancer. I wanted to honor her life by bringing chefs, friends and family together to enjoy two of Leah’s favorites – great food and wine – all while continuing to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.”

The dinner, complete with a reception co-sponsored by Maisons Marques & Domaines Champagne Louis Roederer, Sam Adams and Votan organic vodka, will take diners on a culinary tour of the best of Miami, with each course prepared by a different chef and paired perfectly with an array of amazing wines. It is priced at $150 per person, exclusive of tax and gratuity. Seating is limited and must be reserved in advance by calling Melissa Reilly at 305-674-5594. Seminar Description:
This seminar is going to focus on the legal issues facing artists, particularly contracts. We know many artists who have been ripped off because they did not understand, or even read, the contracts they signed. Do not lose your art! This is a serious issue and one we are going to tackle for this seminar. Mr. Wells is going to break it down and give you some simple examples of how you can protect yourself. Mr. Wells understands these issues very well, being both a lawyer and an artist. Please bring any other legal questions you may have and we will try to cover as many as possible.

The night opens with time for socializing and networking with complimentary beverages and bites provided by Life Is Art. After the seminar, there is time for further specific questions and more networking. This is an excellent opportunity to come meet other working artists and arts professionals from around the area.

The Law Office of William Peña Wells is a South Florida civil practice firm that offers a full range of legal services to a diversified client base, including arts and entertainment clients, The firm provides strategic marketing advice, licensing, contract negotiation and review to individuals, corporate clients, and nonprofit agencies in the United States and Europe. Mr. Wells sits on several nonprofit boards and is Legal Counsel to Artists for A Cause, a South Florida nonprofit group dedicated to providing opportunities for artists to contribute to social causes.

The CANDO Arts Co-op is a contemporary Art Center in Miami Beach that was founded by Ray Breslin, president of Collins Park Neighborhood Association(CPNA) in November, 2009. CANDO, which stands for Cultural Arts Neighborhood Districts Overlay, is in the Collins Park neighborhood.

The thought-provoking work of the 10 resident artists and guest artists is showcased in 5000 square feet of gallery space. The historic building, known as Palm Court, was previously occupied by the W Hotel’s administrative offices, which converted perfectly into a main gallery space, and smaller rooms for studios or private exhibition spaces flanking the main gallery. The main gallery space named Sol Gallery, is used for rotating exhibits comprised of member shows, open calls, classes, and for special events.

The Palm Court building has recently been opened up further to include the Howard Austin Feld gallery, and Art 33139 which was founded and is directed by Tiffany Levy.

Friday, April 22, 10:00 pm to 5:00 am.
Trio on the Bay
1601 79th Street Causeway

Renowned celebrity artist Ryan Paul Simmons invites his supporters, friends and the press and media to celebrate his EARTH DAY birthday in style, at Miami Newest Hotspot Trio on the Bay, located at 1601 79th Street Causeway, on Friday, April 22, from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am.

New York art critics have referred to Ryan Paul Simmons as. “one of the most influential artists in modern history.” His choice of subject matter infused with a very bold color selection while pushing the elements of design is like no other. “This is not pop art! I just haven’t figured out what to call it yet,” says Simmons.

Currently, the Artist is working with Bette Midler and the New York Restoration Project for Earth Day via www.charitybuzz.com. Recently, the Artist teamed up with The White Ribbon Alliance to raise funds and awareness for the organization. A beautiful piece titled ‘Mother Earth’ was sold at auction as well as a commissioned piece.

Simmons, born as an abstract artist in Hollywood, Florida gained international momentum when he decided to create pop art and started the ‘Barock The Vote’ campaign. Rallying for Barack Obama alongside such celebrities as Matt Damon, Spike Lee, and Samuel Jackson, Simmons showcased an 8’x7′ pop art painting of the president-elect, which he developed on the road as he toured around the country. While Simmons has become recognized for his Andy Warhol style of pop art, his abstracts are collected worldwide and can be found in private collections. In 2009 his work was featured in Art Basel along with Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, and Hunt Slonem and was then commissioned to paint an 8’x8′ pop art painting of a young Hugh Hefner live during the Playboy New Year’s Eve Party. “I was commissioned by the Obama Campaign to create awareness and the importance of voting in the 2008 Presidential election.” After 584 hours of live painting during various rallies throughout the States, the ‘Barock the Vote’ was complete. The piece has been in 2 Smithsonian Institutes, 9 inaugural balls, and was featured in Art Basel with Warhol and Dali.

Trio on The Bay is Miami’s premier high-energy event space, restaurant, and nightclub where dinner, drinks and dancing merge at this stunning 23,000 sq. ft. space, which includes a stylish indoor dining room and outdoor terrace space with breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay. Plum Miami Magazine Launch, the best party I have ever attended By Betty Alvarez

I just want to start off this story by stating that I have been to many events, parties, networkers, social affairs etc., I have to admit I was not prepared for what I was going to experience at the Plum Miami Magazine Launch party held at The Raleigh Hotel on April 15. This celebration hosted by The Plum Network brought the most influential crowd of celebrities and tastemakers. At this exclusive event, guests were the first to page through the new April 2011 issue, which features model and actress Lydia Hearst on the cover, shot by acclaimed photographer Brett Ratner.

As I entered the party, VIPs lined up the red-carpet located at the hotel’s iconic outdoor pool area to get their photos taken by the media photographers. The VIPs looked spectacular. As I made my way towards the beautiful pool, my attention quickly diverted to a model hanging on a loop up above the Grey Goose bar. As I turned around, there were literally 10 ft. models (models probably in stilts) with beautiful sparkling gowns.

As I went toward the Raleigh’s beautiful and large pool area, I noticed I was already on top of it. The organizers created a transparent platform that made guests feel they were on top of the water. On this platform, spray painted models with the word Plum on their bodies danced around with the guests along with mime models. One fun aspect that I noticed was that I believe one model sprayed an expandable string which guests really had fun in tangling themselves into.

One can’t forget, one of the most famous DJ’s in the world, DJ Irie spinned one hit after another in this party. Guests could not stop dancing as each hit played. He knows what moves the crowd.

There was one big surprise to the guests by Jerry Powers. Towards the middle of the night, Mr. Powers thanked all the sponsors such as Grey Goose Vodka, The Collection, DJ Irie, NY2, etc. He also thanked the attendees for their support in his magazine launch. He told the crowd, they were in for a big surprise and a treat for them. Suddenly, fireworks started. I literally felt that it was 4th of July. The fireworks were spectacular and we in the middle of April!! The fireworks lasted for 5-7 long minutes. I felt an all time high.

For one night, The Raleigh Hotel was transformed in a fun playground where supporters, VIPs, and celebrities enjoyed themselves. As I left the party, I was still in shock on how this party was really well organized and realized it was the best party I have ever attended. If this is the launch party, I wonder how future parties will be. Truly an amazing event I will never forget!

Inspired by Carlos Castaneda’s Tales of Power
Music by Michael Colgrass
Adapted and Directed by Carson Kievman
Virtual Set Design by Sean McClelland
Musician: Robert Chumbley – Piano

Don Juan concludes the instruction of Castaneda with his most powerful and mysterious lesson in the sorcerer’s art — a dazzling series of visions that are at once an initiation and a deeply moving farewell.“

“If you could only choose to read one of Carlos’ books, this has to be the one.”

“In this astonishing work, Carlos Castaneda at last completes the long journey into the world of sorcery that began with his now-legendary meeting with don Juan. Drawn back by the knowledge that the sorcerer’s task has not been completed, Castaneda returns to plumb the final, awesome secrets of the sorcerer’s explanation of the world-to learn, in don Juan’s world and his own, the last lesson of a unique and arduous apprenticeship.”

Caligula A High Definition Ballet 4/20/11

Festival Film Night
April 20 at 7:30 PM
Miami Beach Cinematheque, Historic City Hall
1130 Washington Avenue, First Floor

Caligula: A High Definition Ballet Presented in collaboration with Emerging Pictures
From the Paris Ballet, Paris, France, Composed by Antonio Vivaldi, Choreographed by Nicolas Le Riche. Caligula is Danseur Étoile Nicolas Le Riche’s first choreography for the Ballet de l’Opéra National de Paris, and is one of the most interesting and experimental productions in years. Intrigued by the complex and troubling personality of the Roman emperor, the choreographer evokes the torments of a frail man capable of loving the moon and idolizing his horse, a man impassioned by theatre and constantly playing a role himself. Nicolas Le Riche overturns clichés and embarks upon an intimate exploration of a rich and complex personality. Built in the style of Racine’s tragedy, the ballet is structured in five acts, three scenes with four pantomime interludes. The story conforms to the rule of the three units of time, place and action. Accompanied by Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, which illustrates the irremediable passage of time, the dance, in all its depth and energy, translates the poetry and the violence inherent in a life consumed at lightning speed by excess.

The screening of Caligula is preceded by a discussion on the French style of ballet with Arnold Quintane, former Principal Dancer, Miami City Ballet

Tanteo Naturally-Infused Artisan Tequilas

“What are your thoughts on 80-proof, choco-infused tequila with hints of jalapeno? That it’s ass water? We were right there with you-until we maned up and took a slug. Awesome! Sweet, spicy and chocolaty good. It confirms the Tijuana truism that cocoa and tequila always mix well.”
Maxim Magazine September 2010

Tanteo tequila takes pure blanco tequila from 100% Weber blue agave and then infuses it with jalapeno, chocolate or tropical fruit extracts.

o Tanteo Jalapeno Tequila $44.99
o Tanteo Chocolate Tequila $44.99
o Tanteo Tropical Tequila $44.99

Flavored tequila was previously prohibited by the CRT, but in 2006 the rules surrounding the infusion of tequilas with various flavors was relaxed allowing for the production of these drinks. The fact that the CRT have relaxed their laws shouldn’t be indication that people can do what the hell they want with tequila, and Tanteo takes a great first step and the results are a high quality product that is both delicious and still respects the tequila in the process.

Please join us this Saturday April 16th from 2-5 pm at our South Beach location, 1328 Alton Road, for a celebration of modern invention and traditional artisan methods. And of course, to drink some Tequila!

Michael Capponi Birthday Party The World is Not Enough 4/16/11

April 16, 8:00pm
Yacht Party
Miami Beach Marina

11pm, Afterparty
LIV at the Fontainebleu

The time has come for Michael Capponi’s annual birthday celebration, this Saturday April 16, 2011. This year’s party is a spoof on the two polar opposite lives Michael Capponi leads today. There is Michael Capponi’s life in Haiti, the poorest country in this hemisphere and his other life in South Beach, throwing lavish parties.

This birthday is way over the top! The private yacht, Allure Shadow, is so big that it won’t even fit under MacArthur causeway. The deck on yacht is as large as any dance floor in any club. Upon entering the yacht at the Miami Beach Marina at 8:00PM, you will be taken back to a James Bond experience with all guests dressed in theme.

Shaken not stirred cocktails courtesy of Grey Goose Vodka.
Lite bites will be provided by Aarons Catering.

In lieu of gifts, there is a minimum donation of $150 in advance or $200 at the door for men. Ladies donation is $20. Due to the limited capacity, it is highly suggested to make your donation and reserve your wrist band prior to my party. All monies collected go straight to United Way to help support my Humanitarian Community in Haiti.

At 11:30PM the music stops and everyone heads to LIV for a surprise part II, which will also blow everyone away!

Please make sure to call Michael Capponi’s office at 305.695.4410 in advance. RSVP is required, email rsvp@capponigroup.com.

Once guests arrive, the NOH8 Campaign will apply the NOH8 temporary tattoo to each persons face and will also supply guests with the silver duct tape for the photo. Celebrity photographer and co-founder Adam Bouska will photograph 5 to 10 frames for each person that comes through. The final selection he chooses will be retouched and make available in 4 to 8 weeks on the website, www.NOH8Campaign.com. Celebrities who have participated include the Kardashian sisters, Cher, Kathy Griffin, Jane Lynch, Pete Wentz, Holly Madison & Guilana Rancic among many others.

*Funds raised by the NOH8 Campaign will be used to continue promoting and raising awareness for marriage equality and anti-discrimination through NOH8’s interactive media campaign. This includes bringing the campaign to other cities around the country, as well as compiling the images for a large-scale media campaign. Under consideration is the expansion of our campaign to other media, including television and radio broadcast, billboards, and magazines. Contributions are also used to cover the daily operations and maintenance necessary to run this rapidly growing campaign.

The NOH8 Campaign is an approved 501(c)(3), donations will be tax-deductible up to the amount allowable by law.

About The Noh8 Campaign
On November 4, 2008 Proposition 8 passed in California, amending the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. The defeat provoked a groundswell of initiative within the GLBT community at a grassroots level, with many new political and protest organizations being formed in response. The NOH8 Campaign is a photographic silent protest created by celebrity photographer Adam Bouska (http://www.bouska.net) and partner Jeff Parshley in direct response to the passage of Proposition 8. Photos feature subjects with duct tape over their mouths, symbolizing their voices being silenced by Prop 8 and similar legislation around the world, with “NOH8” painted on one cheek in protest.

Two years since its inception, the NOH8 Campaign has grown to over 10,000 faces and continues to grow at an exponential rate. The campaign began with portraits of everyday Californians from all walks of life and soon rose to include politicians, military personnel, newlyweds, law enforcement, artists, celebrities, and many more. The NOH8 Campaign has received overwhelming support from around the world, appearing on various local and national news programs and publications. The images are currently being used on various social networking sites to spread the message of equality, predominantly Facebook and Twitter. Eventually the images are expected to be compiled for a large-scale media campaign. For more information, please visit: http://www.noh8campaign.com/

Photographs of First Annual Legacy Gala at The Ancient Special Monastery on 4/9/11

First Annual Legacy Gala at The Ancient Special Monastery on Saturday, April 9, 2011.

About The Ancient Spanish Monastery.  The Historically Designated Ancient Spanish Monastery, widely regarded as the oldest building in the Western Hemisphere, was built in 1133 AD in Sacramenia, Spain. Cistercian monks occupied The Monastery for nearly 700 years. Dismantled and shipped to the United States by William Randolph Hearst in 1925, the Cloisters of The Monastery were reassembled in North Miami Beach, Florida in 1952. In 1953 TIME magazine called The Monastery “history’s biggest jigsaw puzzle” and chronicled the journey and the ancient artifacts of the collection.

Our Promise – To save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cure.
Today, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. Breast cancer is not predictable – it is a random disease. There are no boundaries – age, race, religion, socioeconomic status are not factors. It is the leading cause of death among women ages 40 – 59. Breast cancer strikes women during their most productive years – both personally and professionally. Everyone is affected by breast cancer – it’s a family disease. We don’t know what causes it, and we don’t have a cure. Early detection is critical, providing more treatment options and a greater chance of survival.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer over the past 25 years – transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease. We have helped turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors. With more than $1.3 billion invested to date, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s single largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to curing breast cancer at every stage – from the causes, to the cures, to the pain and anxiety of every moment in between.

The Bass Museum of Art, one of Miami Beach’s key cultural landmarks, along with a select group of the city’s leading arts patrons and philanthropists, will host its annual fundraiser, “A Night at the Museum,” on Thursday, April 28, 2011 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. attracting more than 400 guests with “An Invitation to LOOK/Selections from the Permanent Collection of the Bass Museum of Art.”

While enjoying hors d’oeuvres, GREY GOOSE Vodka cocktails and beats by ESS & EMM, attendees will explore the institution’s new exhibit, “An Invitation to LOOK/Selections from the Permanent Collection of the Bass Museum of Art,” featuring more than 40 works from its permanent collection, including portraits spanning 300 years, painted in varying styles by English, American, Dutch, French and German artists. In addition, a grouping of Impressionist works by French painter Jean-Baptiste Armand Guillaumin shares the galleries with 19th-century Austrian still-life paintings, along with 15th-century devotional works and small etchings by Rembrandt. Selections from the Bass Museum’s impressive group of 14th-century Flemish and Italian altarpieces will join devotional statuary of the Madonna, as well as one of the jewels of the collection, “The Coronation of the Virgin with Saints,” by Botticelli and Ghirlandaio.

The Bass Museum traces its roots back to 1963, when John and Johanna Bass donated their collection to the City of Miami Beach. Through the years, the gift has made great art accessible to thousands of visitors, and “An Invitation to LOOK/Selections from the Permanent Collection of the Bass Museum of Art” provides the opportunity for arts enthusiasts and casual fans to browse a comprehensive collection of Renaissance and Baroque art.

Admission to the fundraising event is $125 for two and includes a Sustaining Membership to the Bass Museum of Art for one year. The Dynamo Food Factory & Café is creating a street-side satellite. Beginning this month, the café’s caterer, Shiraz Events, will transform the Bridge Tender House located on the sidewalk in front of the museum into a scaled-down version of the full service restaurant inside the museum. The Bridge Tender House will serve sandwiches, coffee and other beverages, and the café’s signature cupcakes to passersby. In addition, servers in the Bridge Tender House will be a source of information about the museum and will dispense Wolfsonian collateral materials along with local information flyers and maps. Inside the museum, the café has been granted its liquor license, and is now serving wine and beer.

“This is a fantastic development for us. The Bridge Tender House is a wonderful part of our collection that, in its new incarnation as a food depot and information center for passersby, will add to our outreach and interaction with the public,” notes Wolfsonian director Cathy Leff. The hexagonal, stainless-steel Bridge Tender House was built in 1939 for the Northwest 27th Avenue Bridge. Designed in the Art Moderne style by Harrington & Corteyou, the structure was saved from demolition in the late 1980s when the bridge was reconstructed, and it was donated to the collection by the Florida Department of Transportation. In recent years the Bridge Tender House has often housed installations by contemporary artists whose work expanded on themes in the museum’s collection.

This story spans 21 years and two continents.
On April 10, 1990, a belly dancer Tamalyn Dallal opened the Mid Eastern Dance Exchange, which was the only dance school in South Beach. It was her birthday. little did she know that that studio would spawn international dance stars who would tour the world; including Bellydance Superstars Amar Gamal and Bozenka, plus many more who opened bellydance schools around the globe. Ms. Dallal became well known too, and has left Miami Beach to travel the world teaching bellydance to women from China to Patagonia. One of the popular yearly events, which took place from 1994 to 2007, was an outdoor bellydance festival on Lincoln Road called “Orientalia”. otientalia has also gone global and been produced in Argentina and Hong Kong.

Tamalyn Dallal is also a writer and burgeoning film maker. In the most recent of her three books, entitled “40 Days and 1001 Nights” she traveled to five Muslim countries and lived in each one for forty days. One of the places she lived in was Zanzibar, an island of the coast of mainland Tanzania (East Africa). On this beautiful island she found thousands of heroin addicts. Unbeknownst to her, the young man who was helping her find her way was also an addict.

There were no rehab programs in the entire region. Most people thought that recovery was impossible and that many from this generation were lost forever. But this young man went to a recovery program in Kenya, then came home to Zanzibar and opened his own program. He now has five recovery houses and a sixth on the way. He has helped hundreds of addicts find hope and sobriety.

In July, 2011, fourteen bellydancers from around the world will go to Zanzibar to take a dance workshop and cultural tour with Tamalyn Dallal and her famous protoge, Bozenka. During this time, Tamalyn Dallal and friends will present the Orientalia Festival in a historic Arab fort in Zanzibar. This festival will benefit the drug rehabilitation homes and people will be able to come and learn how their sons can also recover from addiction. It is a festival of hope.

The studio party/performance, on April 10th in Miami Beach will feature 20 bellydancers, including Tamalyn Dallal. Funds raised will go toward producing the Orientalia festival in Zanzibar…Dancing to help Zanzibar become drug free.

Benefiting the Research & Support of Programs Associated with Brain Cancer
Special Performances by The Beach Boys, Gloria Gaynor, Lou Gramm and The Osmond Bothers

On Thursday, April 14th at The Fillmore Miami Beach at The Jackie Gleason Theatre guests will gather together to raise money to benefit Voices Against Brain Cancer. Voice Against Brain Cancer is a foundation dedicated to finding a cure for brain cancer by advancing scientific research increasing awareness within the medical community and supporting patients, their families and caregivers afflicted with this devastating disease. The foundation’s first event in South Florida, “Sounding Off For a Cure” is the vision of Founder, Mario Lichtenstein, and his family after they lost their son and brother, Gary Lichtenstein, after his battle with brain cancer that sadly took his life in 2003 within the first year of his diagnosis at the young age of 24.

“We’ve lost great minds to brain cancer. Use yours to help us find the cure today.” – Mario Lichtenstein, Founder of Voices Against Brain Cancer.

The star-studded benefit will feature performances by artists whose lives have all been effected by brain cancer including The Beach Boys (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award Honorees), Gloria Gaynor (Grammy Award Winning Artist), Lou Gramm (Singer & Songwriter & former ‘Foreigner’ lead vocalist), and The Osmond Bothers (People’s Choice Award Honorees). All of the evening’s performances will be accompanied by the Frost School of Music’s Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra. Additionally, performers will make a special tribute to George Harrison, Celia Cruz, Bob Marley and Nara Leão, all of whom have lost the battle to brain cancer. Guests will enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a live and silent auction followed by an unforgettable performance.

Additional event components will include a ceremony for the 2011 VABC Courage Awards which is presented to select individuals who have demonstrated tremendous courage in their fight against brain cancer. Other award recipients will include Joseph D. Rosenblatt, M.D. (Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center University of Miami’s Interim Director), Pedro Martinez (Former Major League Baseball All Star), Jorge Plasencia (Chairman and CEO of República) and Jesse Stoll (son of the founder of Fantasma Productions).

Voices Against Brain Cancer is a non-for-profit public charity/ one hundred percent of the ticket sales and auction proceeds will support innovative research and programs for brain cancer.

Our mission is to find a cure for brain cancer by advancing scientific research, increasing awareness within the medical community and supporting patients, their families and caregivers afflicted with this devastating disease.

Voices Against Brain Cancer was started in memory of Gary Lichtenstein who lost his valiant battle with brain cancer on October 1, 2003. Gary was living in Chicago and working as an options trader at Wolverine Trading when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor in March of 2003. He was 24 years old at the time. After three months of radiation, Gary slipped into a coma from which he did not recover.

Over the past 30 years, very little progress has been made to treat brain tumors. Only with cutting-edge scientific research and funding of clinical trials will we be able to effectively fight this disease. Voices Against Brain Cancer will promote and support this type of research within the medical community by working with those doctors that are committed to curing and treating brain tumors. In addition, the foundation continually works to fund support groups for patients and caregivers.

At this time, brain tumor research is underfunded and the public remains unaware of the magnitude of this disease. The cure rate for most brain tumors is significantly lower than it is for many other types of cancers. Our Foundation is driven by these facts and committed to finding a cure. It is the goal of our Foundation and its supporters to fund the research that will directly impact those affected with brain tumors. Bill Frisell has collaborated with artists as diverse as Elvis Costello, Bono, T-Bone Burnett, Paul Simon, McCoy Tyner, Ornette Coleman, Brian Eno, Ry Cooder and many more – a testament to his virtuosity as a guitarist, bandleader and composer. An Evening With Recipes Stolen From The Screen 4/11/11

A ‘Feast for All Senses’ – Laura Delli Colli, Italian Film Journalist Presents, “An Evening with Recipes ‘Stolen’ from the Screen”
Monday, April 11, 2011
Miami Beach Cinematheque
1130 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach, 33139

Anyone who loves Italian film and food should not miss out on a spectacular event taking place during the 6th annual Sicilian Film Festival! Famous, Italian film journalist, Laura Delli Colli will present, “An Evening With Recipes ‘Stolen’ From The Screen” on Monday, April 11, 2011 at the Miami Beach Cinematheque, 1130 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, 33139. The film ‘feast’ will begin at 7:00 p.m. with a screening of selected scenes from famous Italian films, followed by feature film presentation of “Baaria” by award-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore, and ending with a buffet dinner at Café Milano, 850 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach.

Film buffs will enjoy recalling scenes from Italian classics such as Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita” Marco Ferreri’s “La Grande Bouffe,” and Luchino Visconti’s “The Leopard.” In Delli Colli’s book “The Taste in 100 Recipes of Italian Cinema” (available in English at Amazon.com), she provides a recipe, a short synopsis of a film, and describes the food motif. Recipe 18 ‘Timballo di Maccheroni/Macaroni Timbale” is inspired by a famous scene from “The Leopard.” Delli Colli writes: “Prince Salina resorts to food to pinpoint the differences in life styles. The food to be enjoyed or to be extolled becomes an orgy of voluptuousness involving all five senses.” The dish which is macaroni with a meat sauce made of pork, chicken, and beef, plus aubergines and mozzarella, covered with a pastry and topped with béchamel sauce is depicted in a scene described by Delli Colli, “when the knife slits the crust, a smoke filled with flavors spurts out first, and then…”

In describing “La Grande Bouffe” with corresponding recipe ‘Rognoni trifolati/Fried Veal Kidneys’ Delli Colli writes: “the film is clearly a metaphor of squalor and an allegory of a society condemned to die of wealth. The gourmet menu is a real nightmare appeasing and killing at the same time the leading characters.” In the film the kidneys are prepared ‘Bordolese-style’ which is the French version of the Italian recipe provided in the book.

At the lecture, Delli Colli will also discuss Donatella Maiorca’s “The Sea Purple” to be screened at the SFF on Friday, April 8th and share recipes for Sicilian Swordfish, Sundried Tomatoes in Oil and Timbale Macaroni.

Following the lecture (at 7:45 p.m.) will be a screening of Giuseppe Tornatore’s “Baaria.” Tornatore became internationally famous after his “Cinema Paradiso” won Special Jury Prize at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award for the Best Foreign Film the same year. “Baaria” was the opening film at the 66th Venice International Film Festival and received a Golden Globe nomination. Baaria (Sicilian slang for Bagheria where Tornatore was born) is an epic saga of life and death, love and hatred in a vibrant Sicilian town in the first half of the twentieth century.

Finally, after discussing and watching food in film, guests are welcome join the SFF President, Emanuele Viscuso, Artistic Director, Salvo Bitonti, and the SFF team at Café Milano, 850 Ocean Drive on South Beach for a buffet dinner (to begin at approximately 10:30 p.m.) Tickets are $50.00 per person and proceeds will benefit next year’s Sicilian Film Festival. For more information and reservations, call (305) 710-4593 or email SicilianFilmFestival@gmail.com.

Guests to this event are offered a special travel deal to experience first hand the ‘Taste of Sicily’ offered by SFF sponsor Mediterranean Concepts. AMG, the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz, returns for the second year as Title Sponsor and is displaying a stable of its own high performance vehicles alongside the well-trained thoroughbred horses.

The four-day, world class sporting event features top polo players from around the world competing in two tournaments for both men and women. The AMG South Beach Women’s Polo Cup Presented by Nespresso is the third annual ladies beach polo tournament, taking place on Thursday April 21st featuring eight women’s teams in a one-day series of round-robin championship matches. Mercedes-AMG is the proud sponsor of the AMG men’s and women’s polo teams that include some of the world’s top-ranked players. Top Brazilian model, Paula Chermont, will be competing for a second year, and the game’s number one female player, Sunny Hale, will play for the AMG women’s team.

The AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup is a three-day men’s tournament, now in its seventh year, starting on Friday, April 22nd through Sunday, April 24th, culminating in the highly acclaimed championship final at the end of the week. The six men’s teams will feature some of the world’s top-ranked players including the iconic Nacho Figueras, as well as Luis Escobar and the number one U.S player, Nic Roldan. Selected as part of the AMG Men’s Polo Team is John Walsh, presenter of America’s Most Wanted and spokesman for The National Foundation For Missing and Exploited Children – one of the participating charities at this year’s AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup. Walsh will be making his inaugural appearance at the AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup as a participating rider and AMG-Mercedes team member, alongside Tommy Biddle, who is currently the highest ranked Arena Polo player in the U.S. John Gobin, a five-time US polo team member will be playing with Lance Vetter and Gringo Colombres from Argentina.

“I am very excited to be part of this year’s AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup,” says Walsh. “As a long-time Polo enthusiast and player, I am very much looking forward to competing for the first time in this year’s tournament alongside some of the best players in the world. The event will help raise awareness for The National Foundation For Missing and Exploited Children and hopefully aid in our mission to help prevent child abduction and sexual exploitation. The Foundation continues to help with saving the lives of children for over 25 years.”

Attendees at this year’s AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup will experience a host of musical and visual entertainment, including fashion shows by La Martina and Blank Silk by Meghan Walsh, the talented daughter of John Walsh, along with live concert performances, VIP parties and public events throughout the tournament. For this year’s AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup, AMG-Mercedes has formed a unique partnership with designer La Martina for the creation of a special edition commemorative polo shirt for the tournament that will be on-sale at the La Martina retail tent over the four days. All proceeds from the sales of the polo shirt will go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami, the tournament’s official partnering charity organization, as well as a portion of funds raised from this year’s ticket sales.

“The AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup is not only a highlight of the social season, but a must-see event that is now a staple on the annual sporting calendar,” said Bruce Orosz, President and Co-Founder of The Polo Life, LLC. “The tournament has become a major attraction to general enthusiasts and Polo aficionados alike, who come to enjoy a sport steeped with tradition in a setting that is world-renowned, bringing considerable media attention through its appeal to the South Florida tourism industry.”

The traditional post-event awards ceremony will be held at the end of each tournament to commemorate both women’s and men’s competition winners, during which John Walsh, along with sponsor representatives from Mercedes-AMG and Nespresso, will present trophies to the men’s and women’s World Cup finalists.

Dream in Green’s annual fundraiser made lots of green at their anniversary event by Betty Alvarez

A who’s who of sustainability and environmental finance attended the Dream in Green’s Anniversary fundraiser held on April 1st at the beautiful Palms Hotel & Spa, on Miami Beach. Dream in Green (South Florida’s largest environmental-education non profit) joined Sustainability 2011 with its party-of-the-year, Living the Dream.

The eco-fabulous Palms Hotel generously donated 3-hours of complimentary delectables and cocktails. The 2011 Green Innovators and community leaders who were honored that evening were The Heat Group, Miami-Dade County’s Office of Sustainability, DecoBike and Assurant. Roger Bustamante (of Miami Symphony) set the mood with his bossa nova trio while guests bid on the over-the-top silent auction items. This year, Dream in Green started the bidding early through the pre-event, online auction, at www.dreamingreen.org.

The evening was emceed by Emmy-winning weathercaster, Trent Monge. Dream in Green received a Proclamation from Commissioner Jerry Libbin and the City of Miami Beach and there was also a beautiful art installation of each guest’s ‘green dream’ written on leaves, swaying in the Palms bamboo grove. The beautiful winner of the Miss Green Earth pageant was also in attendance.

All proceeds from this event are going to be used to expand the Green Schools Challenge program in South Florida. The Green Schools Challenge is currently in over 100 schools (K-12) and fosters green citizenship in upcoming generations by promoting energy and water conservation, waste reduction and sustainable community principles.

It was for sure a very special and memorable evening.

Project R Raises Awareness Of Global Issues
Sponsored by Miami Dade College’s Earth Ethics Institute, New World School of the Arts’ Music and Visual Arts divisions have come together to bring forth environmental issues central to humanity. Lead by NWSA faculty members Rosario Martinez-Cañas, Dr. Susan Epstein Garcia, and Dr. Ferdinando De Sena, the collaborative project, titled PROJECT R, uses art as a springboard to initiate a dialogue among NWSA and MDC students about urban and natural environmental global issues.

The goal of PROJECT R is to highlight environmental problems, both urban and natural, through a series of branding actions and events that resonate with the target group. With words such as Reconsider, Rebirth, Repair, Revolution, and Reinvent, the project first aims to initiate an environmental dialogue among the NWSA / MDC group. An interactive wall installation will be erected at the MDC Wolfson Campus to depict graphically the issues raised during the first stage of PROJECT R. A collaborative effort, the wall includes the work of the seven college graphic designers who will interpret each of the environmental issues that their music counterparts chose. Finally, NWSA college and high school music students will present PROJECT R – A Concert at the Colony Theater, to illustrate the environmental issues through a combination of music compositions.

Rewriting The World Primers And Poetry In The Age Of Confusion Exhibition On View In The Wolfsonian’s Rare Book And Special Collections Library Vestibule 4/7/11

‘Rewriting The World: Primers And Poetry In The Age Of Confusion’ Exhibition On View In The Wolfsonian’s Rare Book And Special Collections Library Vestibule
April 7, 2011
The Wolfsonian
1001 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach, FL

The Wolfsonian–Florida International University presents Rewriting the World: Primers and Poetry in the Age of Confusion. Drawing on the museum’s holdings of rare books from the early twentieth century, the selection of materials represents a range of attempts to define the contours of everyday life through renovations of language. Whether a motorcar marketing booklet, a literacy manual for non-native speakers, or a poem comprised of innovative typography and non-sense sounds, these works emerged from certain social and political agendas. The exhibition surveys the ways in which such agendas are inscribed in the rudiments of language—set into speech and written into thought.

Rewriting the World is organized by Matthew Abess, curatorial research assistant at The Wolfsonian. The exhibit will be on view April 7 through June 5, 2011 and includes evangelical alphabet primers, National Socialist toothpaste pamphlets, Czech photo-texts, typographic fairytales, and end-of-the-world scenarios filmed by the angel of Notre Dame.

“For the writers, designers, and even corporations behind these works, the transformation of everyday life was something to be achieved by linguistic means, and especially by the transformation of language itself,” notes Matthew Abess. “At their most effective, these efforts to initiate readers into certain visions of the present and future are well concealed. This exhibition aims to make them manifest.”

The exhibition is organized in response to the stated mission of the O, Miami poetry festival that every single person in Miami-Dade County encounter a poem during the month of April. Following this call for encounters, The Wolfsonian also will be projecting Abeceda 2000 in its street front windows from nightfall to sunrise beginning on April 7, 2011. The film recreates the Liberated Theater’s performance of Abeceda—an icon of Czech avant-garde poetry, dance, and constructivist design—using the 1926 “photo-text” publication as its visual guide.

In conjunction with the exhibition and in collaboration with independent curator Brett Fletcher Lauer, The Wolfsonian has also invited five contemporary writers to contribute original postcard poems written through the themes in Rewriting the World. The postcards will be distributed in the museum and also will be used in O, Miami’s international call for mail art, a part of the Abe’s Penny Live installations at ArtSeen, where visitors will be sending the postcards to writers and curators internationally as well as to random addresses throughout Miami-Dade County.

On Friday, April 22nd, following the 6pm gallery tour, Matthew Abess, and director of O, Miami Scott Cunningham, will introduce Rewriting the World and engage with the audience about matters of poetry, persuasion, and the language of everyday life. Wine reception to follow; event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Julieth Dabdoub at 305.535.2622 or julieth@thewolf.fiu.edu.

O, Miami is a county-wide poetry festival inaugurating in April 2011. Produced by the University of Wynwood and funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, it is a month-long series of events and projects mixing traditional readings with innovative poetry-in-public-places projects, weaving poetry into the fabric of the city’s infrastructure and cultural life. The events will culminate in a four-day series of readings, April 27-30 at the New World Center. For more information and a full schedule of events, visit omiami.org.

The Wolfsonian is a museum, library, and research center that uses objects to illustrate the persuasive power of art and design, to explore what it means to be modern, and to tell the story of social, historical, and technological changes that have transformed our world. The collections comprise approximately 120,000 objects from the period of 1885 to 1945—the height of the Industrial Revolution to the end of the Second World War—in a variety of media including furniture; industrial-design objects; works in glass, ceramics, and metal; rare books; periodicals; ephemera; works on paper; paintings; textiles; and medals.
The Wolfsonian is located at 1001 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL. Admission discount in effect through April 14, 2011: $5 for adults; $3.50 for seniors, students, and children age 6 -12; and free for Wolfsonian members, State University System of Florida staff and students with ID, and children under six. The museum is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from noon-6pm; Friday from noon-9pm; and is closed on Wednesday. Contact us at 305.531.1001 or visit us online at www.wolfsonian.org for further information.

Hebrew Melodies of the Romantic Era presents the rarely played but rich tradition of Eastern European Jewish music.
Isabelle Durin and Michaël Ertzcheid seek to preserve the voice of the Jewish shtetl and compile compositions from across Europe and Russia; yiddish songs, liturgical music and Hassidic dance tunes are integrated with Western composition traditions (Hector Berliow, Camille Saint-Saëns . Claude Debussy etc…). As musicians, Durin and Ertzscheid convey a powerful and evocative message.
They play with a firm understanding of the traditions for which they speak, incorporating bent notes and quarter tones characteristic of Eastern European music.
If Durin and Ertzscheid’s desire is to include an authentic Jewish voice in the classical Western canon, they fall short of their goal. They convincingly and beautifully capture the voice of suffering and tragedy that so frequently is the tale of the Jews. The result of this is music that is as intense and heartwrenching as the Jewish experience itself.

Since its opening, Lincoln Road’s chic steakhouse, Meat Market, has served as a refuge for foodies, celebs, trendsetters and professionals due to chef Sean Brasel’s exceptional American comfort food, the restaurant’s innovative cocktails, its stunning decor, and reputation as see and be seen dining hotspot. Now, just in time for spring, the famed restaurant’s expert mixologist and beverage director Robert Ortenzio is launching an exciting lineup of delicious new libations and a hotter than ever Friday Happy Hour.

“It’s a return to basics,” says Ortenzio of the new drink creations. “Our cocktail program is becoming a little less fluffy and a lot more serious this spring. Four of our most popular drinks from the previous menu will remain as Meat Market signatures, and a mix of classic and sour cocktails will round out the rest.”

A purist when it comes to the evolution of the cocktail, Ortenzio’s philosophy is to let the spirits shine, creating mixtures using only the freshest and highest quality ingredients that complement the spirit instead of masking or overpowering it. For the new spring list, ingredients such as fresh herbs, orange flower and agave provide subtle accents to strong bodied liquors such as cognac, bourbons and moonshine, giving classic drink recipes a refreshing update.

On the sweet front is the effervescent French 75 with Conjure Cognac, Champagne, lemon juice and simple syrup. Fruity concoctions include the refreshing Southern Strawberry, made with Jack Daniel’s, muddled strawberries, sweet orange juice, lemon juice and flamed rosemary. Ortenzio stays on trend with an ode to the reemergence of moonshine with the Crystal Clear Manhattan – Moonshine White Corn Whiskey, Dolin Blanc and orange flower water.

Eager to share their new cocktail creations, Meat Market is re-launching their Friday Happy Hour, making it bigger and better than ever. Taking place every Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., Ortenzio’s new and old creations, as well as beer and selected wine, are offered at half price. Guests can pair drinks with some of chef Brasel’s specially priced Crudo items, including fresh oysters with yuzu truffle mignonette, atomic horseradish and habanero sauces ($1.50 each); Chimay shrimp cocktail by the piece, adorned with sweet miso, MM cocktail sauce and 10k Island dressing ($3); a daily ceviche special ($6); and tuna tartare with ginger, soy, avocado smash and mango mole ($8). To set the mood for the weekend, DJ Edwin spins a blend of cool and funky tunes.

In addition to the new cocktail menu, Ortenzio has begun to expand the bar’s selection of spirits, bringing in some rare or difficult to obtain bottles, such as 40-year-old Black Tot rum, which is considered the rarest commercially available rum in the world and Pappy Van Winkle, a 23-year-old bourbon. “I’m predicting a shift in popularity from single malt Scotches and cognacs to bourbon and gin,” says Ortenzio. All of the new additions, as well as the two time Wine Spectator award-winning wine list, further solidify Meat Market’s reputation as a restaurant with serious bar cred’.

This Friday, April 1 from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach celebrates another installment of their monthly happy hour “beats after sunset @ the bass.” Launched earlier this year, the successful happy hour takes place at the museum’s terrace and attracts art and music hipsters. Scheduled on the first Friday of every month, the event serves complimentary specialty cocktails generously sponsored by Herradura Tequila. Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and Vitamin Water are also plentiful. Beats will be provided by DJ Yanni Difranco.

This week’s beats after sunset @ the bass will also serve as the opening reception for the museum’s latest exhibit, Come Together: Frances Trombly and Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova.

Now through June 19, 2011
Come Together: Frances Trombly and Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova

The Bass Museum of Art will exhibit the work of Frances Trombly and Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova, two prolific Miami artists who also happen to be married. Both artists will create intriguing installations inspired by everyday objects. Trombly’s sculptures of mops, blank canvases and painters’ drop cloths fool the eye; these things appear to be mass-produced, but in fact they have been meticulously hand-stitched, crocheted and embroidered. Rodriquez-Casanova works with home-decorating items in an attempt to deconstruct the domestic environment. His installation will feature a section of ceiling, vertical blinds and a chandelier, skewed at an angle. In a third installation the couple will combine their efforts merging the hand-made and mass produced, using contrasting elements that are either organically soft or rigidly structured.

Richie Rich’s Villionaire Fashion Extravaganza by Betty Alvarez

On the sands of 8th and Ocean, a big tent marked the signature spot for all the fashion shows that Funkshion Fashion Week would showcase. Other than previous years, guests felt more at ease in going to the fashion shows as there was enough space for everyone whether they sat or remained standing to see the show.

Even though there was a two hour delay, guests waited patiently for Richie Rich’s Villionaire as the kick off fashion showcase of the evening. Speaking of the guests, even they looked the part in their fashion style and finesse. A Lady Gaga look-a-like was also the talk of the evening as guests took pictures of her and posed with her.

Finally the wait was over and Richie Rich’s Villionaire collection was a hit with the audience. The many dresses that lined the catwalk was impressive. Many earthy tones and the unique style of the wardrobe is why his collection truly exemplifies.

Wednesday, March 30, 6 PM to 8PM
at Miami Beach Botanical Garden
2000 Convention Center Drive

Professor Carrie Penabad
Author of Marion Manley: Miami’s First Woman Architect
Free and Open to the Public

Professor Carie Penabad will discuss the legacy of Miami’s first female architect, Marion Manley.
Penabad is an assistant professor at the School of Architecture of the University of Miami and is a principal at CURE & PENABAD Architects. Her firm has been awarded numerous professional recognitions and awards, including American Institute of Architects awards, state and local preservation awards, a National Congress for New Urbanism Award, and a Silver Medal prize at the 2010 Miami Biennale. She published Marion Manley: Miami’s First Woman Architect, with respected historian and author Catherine Lynn.

Marion Manley was one of the South Florida’s premier architects and the second woman registered to practice in the state. Born in Junction City, Kansas in 1893, she moved to Miami in 1917 after graduating from the University of Illinois. During a successful career that spanned nearly fifty years, Manley sought to improve Miami’s built environment by serving on several civic committees involved with urban development and long range planning. Manley embraced the principles of what would become known as vernacular architecture in her designs for both residential and public buildings. As a result, she produced structures that incorporated local materials, were functional, simplistic, and designed to withstand South Florida’s tropical climate. Among her notable projects were several buildings for the University of Miami and the Asolo Theater building at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota.

By 1980, they were blessed with their son Johnpaul ’98 who would graduate from St. Rose of Lima, ACND, and Barry University. Johnpaul joined the family business shortly after graduation. Since Johnpaul was an ACND student, both John and Gabriella have continuously given time, talent, and financial support towards various projects, including a football field scoreboard; helping to beautify the football bleachers; designing and remodeling the library’s computer lab, cafeteria kitchen, school restrooms, gym locker room, the school’s main office; and relocating the Notre Dame crest, girls’ softball field, and, most recently, the new baseball field. Gabriella was on the school’s PTA for three years, managed the book sale, and, together with John, founded Festa Italiana – a school fundraising event held in their home that would, over the course of its history, raise more than twenty five-thousand dollars.

The ACND Hall of Fame gala is organized by a committee headed by dinner chair, Swanee DiMare ’65, and committee chair, Diane Stead ’70. Spero Canton and Lisa Petrillo ’81 will serve as Masters of Ceremony. The opening reception is on April 1st from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm with a special preview on March 25th from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm. Works included will address a range of topics from beauty, nonmaterial desires, transformation, the unconscious, commentary on waste, identity, and ecology. This show will be showcasing the core values of these artists and there will be something for everyone in this wonderful and thoughtful show. Works will include the current resident artists and 2 new resident artists Luis Valle and Sri Prabha.

Artists to show are Alissa Christine’s work known for capturing the true essence of beauty by a fusion of photography, lighting, movement, painting, sculpture, and display. Annfaye Poole’s sculptures of clay, glass, and metal that explore the nonmaterial transcendent desires bound to the material. Augusto Esquivel’s work known for transforming simple buttons into it’s greatest potential of being a unique sculptural entity. Janet M. Mueller’s work known for painting messages in abstract images with a brush and garden hose, and 3-dimensional works made with found objects. Julio Green’s abstractions that evolve from everyday objects or situations expressed into forms and colors on canvas.

Lucinda Linderman’s work focusing on upcycling the waste consumer goods creates, into sculpture by twisting and heat fusing plastic and printing with worm castings on handmade paper. Sid Daniels’ work about mortality, sexual identity, social anxiety, social hang-ups, sexual paranoia, and past taboos with references to advertising, fashion, and entertainment. Sri Prabha’s works that simultaneously convey the conflicting forces and processes that create and alter the natural world yet are often hidden from the human eye. Luis Valle’s work of continuous self-discovery including his origins, nationality, race, spirituality, psyche and purpose.

CANDO Arts Coop is a contemporary Art Center in Miami Beach that was founded by Ray Breslin, president of Collins Park Neighborhood Association (CPNA) in November, 2009. CANDO, which stands for Cultural Arts Neighborhood Districts Overlay, is in the Collins Park neighborhood. The thought-provoking work of resident and guest artists is showcased in 5000 square feet of gallery space. The historic building, known as Palm Court, is a work of art in itself, with archways framing tall display windows. Having been previously occupied by the W Hotel’s administrative offices, the gallery’s interior is impeccably designed. Over a dozen professional artists display their work in sections of the contemporary atmosphere. The center space is used for special exhibits.

“ANCIENT VOICES OF CHILDREN”
A Cycle of Songs on Texts by Federico Garcia Lorca
Music by George Crumb
& other works by American Composers, plus Prelude for Garcia Lorca.

With Rebekah Diaz, soprano – Rebecca Duren, “boy” soprano – John Weisberg, oboe/harmonica – Rafael Ramirez, mandolin – Deborah Fleisher, harp – Viktor Nikolov, electric piano/toy piano – Mark Schubert, percussion – Simon Gomez, percussion – Gustavo Matamoros, musical saw – Robert Chumbley, conductor& Merry Jo Cortada, actress/narrator – Carson Kievman, director

“In Ancient Voices of Children, as in my earlier Lorca settings, I have sought musical images that enhance and reinforce the powerful, yet strangely haunting imagery of Lorca’s poetry. I feel that the essential meaning of this poetry is concerned with the most primary things: life, death, love, the smell of the earth, the sounds of the wind and the sea. These “ur-concepts” are embodied in a language which is primitive and stark, but which is capable of infinitely subtle nuance. In a lecture entitled Theory and Function of the “Duende”, Lorca has, in fact, identified the essential characteristic of his own poetry. Duende (untranslatable, but roughly: passion, élan, bravura in its deepest, most artistic sense) is for Lorca “all that has dark sounds … This ‘mysterious power that everyone feels but that no philosopher has explained’ is in fact the spirit of the earth … All one knows is that it burns the blood like powdered glass, that it exhausts, that it rejects all the sweet geometry one has learned …” George Crumb

City Year Miami Red Jacket Ball 3/26/11

Comcast presents the City Year Miami Red Jacket Ball
Saturday, March 26th
Ritz-Carlton
South Beach

Honoring The Miami Dolphins CEO, Mike Dee and Univision President, César Conde.

Community and corporate champions will join Comcast and City Year Miami to celebrate the work of 82 young leaders who dedicate a full year of tutoring and mentoring in Miami-Dade County’s most challenged public schools.

City Year Miami deploys 82 exceptional young leaders, known as corps members, to dedicate one full year of service in local schools and the community. Corps members work towards lowering the high school dropout rate by serving in eight of Miami-Dade County’s lowest performing schools. Since its inception to our community in 2008, City Year Miami corps members have served over 160,000 hours each year to Miami-Dade County.

As City Year Miami completes its third year of service in Miami-Dade County Public Schools, it will be joined by corporate and community leaders during its annual Red Jacket Ball on Saturday, March 26th at the Ritz-Carlton in South Beach. Corporate and community leaders such as, Comcast, The TriMix Foundation, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., Univision, The Miami Dolphins, The Miami Herald, Publix, Deloitte and many others will support City Year Miami as it celebrates its impact and local efforts.

“As the presenting sponsor of this year’s Red Jacket Ball, Comcast believes strongly in the work City Year does in our most underperforming schools, putting students back on track towards high school graduation,” said Klayton Fennell, Regional Vice President, Comcast – FL East Coast Region. “Comcast has proudly partnered with City Year for more than ten years and we are thrilled to support the young leaders who have answered their call to service.”

Univision, President, César Conde; Miami Dolphins, CEO, Mike Dee; Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Superintendent, Alberto Carvalho; Bestselling Novelist, Brad Meltzer and Senator Anitere Flores will be amongst the honorees and speakers for the evening in recognition of their commitment and dedication to City Year and the community as a whole.

Other notable attendees include: Stephen M. Ross, Owner, Miami Dolphins; Jorge Perez, The Related Group; Emilio Estefan; Miami-Dade County Commissioner, Carlos Gimenez; Miami-Dade County School Board Member, Raquel Regalado; City of Miami Mayor, Tomas Regalado; City of Hialeah Mayor, Julio Robaina; State Representative Erik Fresen and Venus Williams.

It is through the efforts and partnership with these corporations, among others, that City Year has been able to demonstrate a high level of success in the public schools it serves. The critical support of government, individuals, foundations and corporate partners have allowed City Year Miami to serve over thousands of students throughout Miami-Dade County Public Schools over its first three years of operations. Proceeds raised from the event will allow City Year Miami to grow its program for the 2011-2012 school year.

“We are truly excited to host City Year Miami’s closest champions and supporters on a night when we celebrate the work of our 82 corps members who are everyday heroes to the students we serve in Miami– Dade County schools,” said Saif Y. Ishoof, Esq, Executive Director, City Year Miami. “We are thrilled to channel the support from tonight’s event towards our organization’s future growth.”

For more information about City Year Miami and the Red Jacket Ball, please contact Lee Grever, Development Director, City Year Miami: lgrever@cityyear.org or 786-406-7902.

City Year unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. As tutors, mentors and role models, these diverse young leaders help children stay in school and on track, and transform schools and communities across the United States, as well as through international affiliates in Johannesburg, South Africa and London, England.

Watch Wills and Kate say I do at National Hotel Miami Beach 4/29/11

National Hotel Miami Beach To Host Royal Wedding Viewing Party
On Friday, April 29, 6:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
The Restaurant and Blues Bar
National Hotel Miami Beach

Guests to enjoy traditional English fare while watching Wills & Kate say I do in the most expensive celebrity wedding ever

On Friday, April 29, 2011, National Hotel Miami Beach will host a royal affair in honor of the much-anticipated marriage of England’s Prince William to fiancé Kate Middleton. Held at The Restaurant and Blues Bar from 6:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., the broadcast viewing party will offer guests the opportunity to watch the festivities on a large projector screen while enjoying a traditional “Full English Breakfast” consisting of fried eggs, English-style sausage, rashers of crispy fried bacon, browned mushrooms, black pudding, a browned half tomato and fried bread. For those who miss the live viewing of the celebrated couple’s “I do’s,” Blues Bar will continue to loop the footage throughout the day accompanied by Kir Royal cocktails for $6 each. Guests are invited to enjoy the breakfast for $24 (gratuity and cocktails not included), while those who don their best Kate Middleton hat will receive a complimentary Kir Royal. Valet parking will also be offered at a discounted rate of $10.

In what will be the largest royal wedding since Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana – and not to mention the most expensive celebrity wedding ever, likely costing British taxpayers more than $20 million – the marriage of Wills and Kate will commence with the arrival of the bride at Westminster Abbey, followed by an 11:00 a.m. (GMT) ceremony during which time Archbishop Canterbury Rowan Williams will marry the couple, whose eight-year courtship has drawn international attention. Witnesses and those who catch the live viewing on BBC and BBC America will then look on as the newly weds glide in a horse-drawn carriage through Britain’s Parliament Square, Whitehall, Horse Guards Parade, the Mall and then to Buckingham Palace, where husband and wife are expected to make an appearance on the same balcony William’s parents kissed after their wedding in 1981.

MIAMI BEACH – Symbio, a new gym featuring an innovative science-fitness program, wants to meet its neighbors.

So, on Saturday, March 26, Symbio is opening its doors at 1815 Purdy Ave., so locals can put its trainers, instructors and all-new Cybex equipment through iron pumping, heart pounding paces.

Everyone who works out qualifies to win a free three-month membership.

So what is Symbio (http://www.symbiofit.com)? The gym takes working out and gyms to a level not yet seen in the industry. The founders, two champions of South Florida fitness, have developed the BioFit Metablic Test, which gauges an individual’s unique needs based on their metabolism, heart rate and stage of life.

The BioFit test establishes a person’s biological age (i.e. you can be 50 but workout like a 30-year-old, or you can be 30 and workout like a 60-year-old) and ideal fat-burning zone. Based on the results, Symbio’s staff can develop an individualized workout and nutrition plan.

The testing is so innovative that doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital use the BioFit Metabolic Test to help patients with a variety of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and hormone imbalances improve their health.

Athletes use the test to ensure that they can improve their performance in competition.

Giacomo Gates approaches jazz singing with a showman’s poise and an aficionado’s zeal. Holding court on Wednesday night in the mezzanine lounge of the Kitano New York Hotel, he was solicitous but cool. He wanted to let his listeners in on a secret, bring them into his confidence. With his deep, cognac baritone and his vintage-hipster lexicon, he seemed an appreciative throwback, eager to share credit with his precursors while mindful of keeping a little for himself.

Opening with “Melodious Funk,” a medium-bright swinger from his most recent album, “Luminosity” (G88), Mr. Gates laid out his core principles from the start: sporty syncopations, nimble turns of phrase, sure-footed scat choruses. His stage manner conveyed a muted but stout physicality, perhaps as a byproduct of his experience. (Before turning full time to jazz in 1990, he spent more than a dozen years in heavy construction, working on the Trans-Alaska pipeline, among other things.) In his phrasing and his bearing, he upheld a distinctly masculine ideal of deceptive nonchalance.

Mr. Gates has made a specialty out of vocalese, the jazz practice of setting original lyrics to a musician’s improvisations. It is probably no accident that his vocal timbre can evoke Eddie Jefferson, a pioneer in the style. Backed more than capably here by the pianist John di Martino and the bassist Steve LaSpina, Mr. Gates made a point of finessing Jefferson’s “Disappointed,” based on a Charlie Parker solo over Gershwin’s “Lady Be Good.” He also made a point of featuring some lyrical inventions of his own.

Wisely, he slipped a pair of songbook ballads into the set — “P.S. I Love You” and “You’ve Changed” — and each was a model of austere, straightforward pathos. And he closed with a winner: Monk’s “Let’s Call This,” with original lyrics about the dwindling flame of a love affair.

“When I first met you / You were so inviting,” Mr. Gates sang at the tune’s start, articulating clearly. He held out the last syllable, “ing,” for five and a half beats, echoing the jangle of Monk’s pianism, and expecting everyone to get it.

MDC Cultura del Lobo Performance Series Presents Last Meadow 3/25-26/11

Friday and Saturday, Mar. 25 – 26, at 8 p.m.
MDC’s Cultura del Lobo Performance Series Presents Last Meadow
The Colony Theater
1040 Lincoln Road
Miami Beach

Mining scenes from James Dean’s East of Eden, Rebel without a Cause and Giant films, Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People reach back fifty years to portray an America where the jig is up and the dream has died. Miami Dade College’s (MDC) acclaimed Cultura del Lobo Performance Series will present this powerful work, titled Last Meadow, on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 25 – 26, at The Colony Theater in Miami Beach.

Last Meadow, which earned a 2010 Bessie Award, is set to a collage-like score created by composer Neal Medlyn and lighting by longtime collaborator Lenore Doxsee. With gorgeous dance passages, monologues and action, the show expresses longing and frustration in ways that words cannot. Gutierrez is accompanied onstage by Powerful People performers Michelle Boulé and Tarek Halaby.

“This is the most experimental performance that we are presenting this year,” said Elizabeth Doud, Cultura del Lobo’s artistic director. “Gutierrez’s work is important because it represents a young American voice that is directly questioning not only social norms but also norms in artistic practice. He is an intrepid dance maker who isn’t overly concerned with the aesthetics of beauty, but delivers a blend of dance-poetry that is unapologetic and irreverent, yet endearing in image, movement and voice.”
“We are proud to include Gutierrez’s work in the Cultura del Lobo Performance Series and stand behind emerging artists and their risk taking,” she added.

This presentation of Last Meadow is supported by the National Performance Network, which provides support for established and emerging artists in dance, music, theatre, performance art, puppetry and spoken word.

The Cultura del Lobo Performance Series is an MDC initiative, through the Cultural Affairs Department. It was originally conceived as a play on the name of the downtown campus (Wolfson) and the adventurous spirit of the college’s programs, and has a celebrated history of featuring international and culturally specific work, both traditional and contemporary, which would not otherwise be seen in this region. In fact, two recent Grammy Award winners – Esperanza Spalding and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra – were featured artists in the series.

Tickets for Last Meadow are $20 – $25 for general admission; students and seniors $18. MDC students, faculty and staff with proper ID receive a discount.

For more information, please contact MDC Cultural Affairs Department.

The Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach will host a PechaKucha, a creative networking event, exploring the local Slow Art Movement on Saturday, March 19th from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. as part of the museum’s monthly Wine, Wander, and Wonder program. PechaKucha is a Japanese inspired event for creatives to meet, network and share their work in public.

With 20 Power Point slides shown for 20 seconds each, local thought leaders – Myra Wexler (Musing with Myra), Jason Hedges (Artist), Kathleen Carignan, Esq (LegalArt Residency Program), Karelle Levy (Stitching Bitches), Dr. Adrienne Von Lates (Bass Museum of Art), Kerry McLaney (Miami Independent Thinkers), Dennis Leyva (Miami Beach Art in Public Spaces) – will have about seven minutes to talk about developing conversations and community issues around their passion in the arts.

A wine reception available to all attendees will immediately follow the presentation.

About Slow Art
Slow Art Day started in 2009 as an experimental program with the hypothesis to see if it was possible to make great art more enjoyable and accessible to the general public – i.e. to share the “secret” that art experts, curators, educators, artists and others know: that if you look slowly, you will see. The end goal is to create “inspired, not tired” art experiences that keep audiences engaged. www.slowartday.com/index.html

About PechaKucha
PechaKucha was conceived in Tokyo in February 2003 by architects Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein as an event where young designers could meet, network and show their work in public. Over time, it has evolved into a massive celebration of creativity with over 380 cities represented hosting 900 events last year. The combined power of these cities equates to an incredible 10,000 presentations and 200,000 PechaKucha attendees annually.

Drawing its name from the Japanese phrase for the sound of conversation (“chit chat”), the PechaKucha format is simple—20 images x 20 seconds—and designed to keep presentations concise and moving at a rapid pace. www.pecha-kucha.org/cities/miami

Architect Arata Isozaki designed an addition to the museum that doubled its size from 15,000 to 35,000 square feet between 1998 and 2002. For more information, please visit http://www.bassmuseum.org

Comcast presents the City Year Miami Red Jacket Ball 3/26/11

Comcast presents the City Year Miami Red Jacket Ball
Saturday, March 26th
Ritz-Carlton South Beach

“As the presenting sponsor of this year’s Red Jacket Ball, Comcast believes strongly in the work City Year does in our most underperforming schools, putting students back on track towards high school graduation,” said Klayton Fennell, Regional Vice President, Comcast – FL East Coast Region.“Comcast has proudly partnered with City Year for more than ten years and we are thrilled to support the young leaders who have answered their call to service.”

Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, Univision, President, César Conde, The Miami Dolphins, CEO, Mike Dee and Senator Anitere Flores will be amongst the honorees and speakers for the evening in recognition of their commitment and dedication to City Year and the community as a whole. Proceeds raised from this event will allow City Year to grow its program reach for the 2011-2012 school year.

“We are truly excited to host City Year Miami’s closest champions and supporters on a night when we celebrate the work of our 82 corps members who are everyday heroes to the students we serve in Miami–Dade County schools,” said Saif Y.
