In celebration of National Caribbean American Month in June, The LOOP Fort Lauderdale Beach will host a weekend of festivities, June 2-4. Since 2006, June has been designated as Caribbean American Heritage Month by Presidential Proclamation. The month-long observance promotes the rich culture and heritage of the Caribbean-American people and their contribution to the United States of America.

Building off The LOOP’s four pillars of engagement, “F.A.M.E.,” and its mission to provide “Infinite Experience for Everyone Under the Sun,” the inaugural Caribbean American Heritage Month Cultural Celebration Weekend at Las Olas Oceanside Park will showcase food, art, music and entertainment which are a rich and thriving part of the Caribbean culture in South Florida. The free event is open for the entire family to enjoy.

As music and dance are an essential part of Caribbean culture, the tropical beats of the islands will keep the party going all weekend long with sounds including Calypso, Reggae, and Soca to Salsa, Merengue, and Dancehall.

Friday Night’s kick-off concert featuring Jamaican Hall of Fame Inductees, “The Bad Boys of Reggae,” Inner Circle, will be hosted by Lifetime Achievement Award winner of the International Reggae and World Music Awards, Tanto Irie.

A limited number of VIP Tables are available ($60 – $120); in addition to an exclusive meet and greet after-party with Inner Circle on the Pool Deck of the Courtyard by Marriott, Fort Lauderdale Beach available for $25.
On Saturday and Sunday, guests will have the opportunity to purchase a variety of authentic Caribbean food and drinks, and watch cooking demonstrations sponsored by Grace Foods featuring “Taste The Islands” Chef Irie. The LOOP will also feature a special marketplace showcasing makers and artists of Caribbean descent.

On Sunday, Julien Believe, the “Music Ambassador of The Bahamas,” will host the daylong entertainment lineup and sounds in recognition of the 50th anniversary of The Bahamas’ independence.

Leader Debbie Pierce is a multi-instrumentalist (Sax/Vocal/Flute) who has been performing in South Florida for over 20 years. The band is comprised of some of the best musicians in South Florida and consistently delivers not just great music but great entertainment too. Members have performed with artists such as JLo, Gloria Estefan, Jon Secada, and George Benson.

May 12 – Pure Heart & Mr. Nice Guy Band– Mother’s Day Weekend Concert Double Header
The Pure Heart band hails from South Florida and features six seasoned professionals performing the timeless classics of the band Heart, led by Hall of Fame artists and sisters Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson. The band tributes its success to the music and powerful hits of Heart that spans generations. The music is played and sung authentically, in true homage to Heart. Songs include “Barracuda,” “Dreamboat Annie,” “Alone,” “These Dreams,” “Magic Man,” “Love Alive,” “Crazy On You” and more. Additionally, Pure Hearts adds some of the favorites Heart chose to remake, including “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin and “Love, Reign O’er Me” by The Who.

Formed in 2002, Mr. Nice Guy (MNG) is one of the area’s most popular classic rock groups, delivering high-energy performances of some of the best music from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. In addition to a monster set list of classic rock cover songs, Mr. Nice Guy has original music and has recently been on tour, backing major acts such as ZZ Top. South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s 25th Anniversary Season Finale Concert Featuring Rachmaninoff and Bruckner

South Florida Symphony Orchestra will close out its triumphant 25th anniversary season with a grand finale concert featuring Rachmaninoff’s demanding Piano Concerto No. 3 performed by Svetlana Smolina; along with Bruckner’s choral masterpiece, Te Deum, featuring the South Florida Symphony Chorus and vocalists Elaine Alvarez, soprano; Rehanna Thelwell, mezzo-soprano; Neil Nelson, bass-baritone; and Arnold Rawls, tenor. Led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso, the concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are on sale, now.

Born April 1, 1873, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 is considered to be one of the most demanding and beautiful of all of the Russian composer’s piano concertos. The romantic, yet, complicated piece, was originally intended as a spotlight soloist piece for Rachmaninoff’s friend Josef Hofmann, who eventually elected not to perform it. So complex is this piece, that the biographical film drama “Shine” detailed pianist David Helfgott’s quest to conquer the concerto resulting in his ultimate mental breakdown.

Performing Piano Concerto No. 3 will be audience favorite and recurring South Florida Symphony soloist Svetlana Smolina. Smolina has performed with orchestras and in recitals, worldwide. Notable appearances include the Mariinsky Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, New York Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Odessa and Nizhny Novgorod Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, New Florida Philharmonic, Shreveport Symphony and New York Chamber Orchestra. A frequent guest at international festivals, Smolina has performed at the Salzburg Festival, Hollywood Bowl, Ravinia Rising Stars, White Nights, Maggio Musicale, Mikkeli, Ruhr, Easter, Rotterdam Phillips Gergiev, International Gilmore, Settimane Musicali di Stresa, Michelangeli, Hennessy Artists Series at Hanoi Opera House, The Voice of Music in Upper Galilee, Royal Covent Garden Opera, Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory, Mozarteum, Merkin Hall, Kravis Center, NJPAC, Gulbenkian Foundation, Grand Artists Series in Tel-Aviv and Academia Santa Cecilia in Rome. In addition to her touring engagements, Smolina is currently piano program director for European Academy of Fine Arts / Piano Conservatory (a division of Irish American University) and piano program director of the Philadelphia International Music Festival.

Anton Bruckner’s Te Deum premiered in Vienna on May 2, 1885. The composer himself called the work “the pride of his life” and it stands as the composer’s most overtly joyful hymn of praise and thanks. The producers of Friday Night Sound Waves are giving guests six more opportunities to check #41 off author Christiana Lilly’s “100 Things to Do in Fort Lauderdale Before You Die” list, with a spring revival of the popular free concert series at The LOOP (Las Olas Oceanside Park), April 21 through May 26 from 6:30–9:30 p.m.

Presented by the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Beach Business Improvement District, Friday Night Sound Waves welcomes locals and visitors, the young and the young at heart, to enjoy some of South Florida’s best musical talents, performing an eclectic range of genres ranging from Classic Rock to Latin Jazz, and Top 40 to Tribute Bands. Attendees are invited to come early to enjoy various pre-concert games on the main lawn starting at 5 p.m., along with local artisan vendors and a rotation of food and drink vendors to sip, sup and shop before, during and after the show.

The LOOP will also host special performances throughout the month of April on select Saturday and Sunday afternoons in recognition of Jazz Appreciation Month in coordination with the weekend Markets. South Florida Symphony Orchestra will present a bold and daring evening of Dvořák Masterworks, featuring his love letter to America, Symphony No. 9 in E minor: “From the New World” as well as Cello Concerto in B minor, the greatest of all cello concertos, performed by Grammy Award-winning artist Zuill Bailey – who also appeared during the Symphony’s inaugural concert 25 years ago. Led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso, the concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are on sale, now.

Maestra Alfonso and Zuill Bailey have known each other since their days at Peabody Conservatory. Over the years, he has become a frequent SFSO guest artist and a favorite among audiences. He is widely considered one of the premier cellists in the world and is an internationally renowned soloist, artistic director, and teacher. His illustrious recording career consists of over 20 titles. His CD, Dvořák Cello Concerto is listed in Penguin’s Guide as one of the Top 1000 Classical Recordings of All Time. He also won a GRAMMY for Best Solo Performance for his live recording of Tales of Hemingway by composer Michael Daugherty. A consummate concerto soloist, Bailey has been featured with symphony orchestras worldwide, including Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, Israel, Cape Town, Russia, Hong Kong, Jordan, Mexico, South America, the United Kingdom, and Austria. He has collaborated with such conductors as Itzhak Perlman, Alan Gilbert, Andrew Litton, Neeme Jarvi, Giancarlo Guerrero, James DePriest, and Jun Markl, to name a few. Classical Net calls Bailey “easily one of the finest cellists alive today,” and states that he “commands a simply lovely tone, passionate and full of vigor,” in a review of his Dvořák Cello Concerto recording.

In 1892, Antonín Dvořák was recruited to be the director for the National Conservatory of Music in New York City, which opened in 1888 to make music education available to talented students from every background, including marginalized communities and fostering the creation of American national music. In his quest to bring the sounds of America into European classical music, his most famous work was born, the four-movement Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, better known as “New World Symphony.” In the lead-up to its 1893 premiere by the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall, Dvořák commented that he thought the core of an American sound could be found in Native American communities and African American spirituals, which you can hear in the composition. Upon its premiere, a reporter for the New York Herald observed that the new symphony was “a noble composition…of heroic proportions.”

Cello Concerto in B minor, the most widely regarded and also the last solo concerto by Antonín Dvořák, will be performed by Zuill Bailey. Written in 1894 for Dvořák’s friend, the cellist Hanuš Wihan, it premiered in London in 1896 by the English cellist Leo Stern. Dvořák wrote the concerto while in New York City for his third term as the director of the National Conservatory. After hearing composer Victor Herbert’s Cello Concerto No. 2 in E minor, Op. 30, Dvořák was inspired to complete a cello concerto of his own. Herbert had been principal cellist in the New York Philharmonic that premiered Dvořák’s “New World Symphony” in 1893.

Continuing its commitment to welcoming local residents and visitors alike to engage in “Infinite Experiences for Everyone Under the Sun,” The LOOP reimagines its popular Friday Night Sound Waves series, launching the first of its new immersive music weekends with “All Shook Up – A Tribute to Elvis.” Coinciding with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s 88th birthday, the two-day celebration will take place Friday, January 6, and Saturday, January 7, 2023.

The weekend celebration continues to pay respect to all things Presley, from the music that inspired him and the world to the movies that reinvented him, along with his passion for cars, favorite foods, and flamboyant fashions.

• 11:30 am – 1 p.m.: How Great Thou Art, Gospel Brunch: There are not many rock ‘n’ roll stars who also created incredible gospel music, but then again, there was only one Elvis Presley. Elvis shook the world with his infectious brand of rock ‘n’ roll, but he also took the world to church with his beautiful, soulful gospel music. Elvis loved traditional sacred music as much as he loved soul, country, and rock – maybe even more so.

Featuring the New Mount Olive Baptist Choir, led by Music Director Kenneth Smith (12 p.m.), with a special introductory performance by Pastor Paula Coleman (11:45 a.m.), the hour-long performance is open to the public and free to attend.

Those opting for the Gospel Brunch ticket ($29.50/adult; $21.50/child ) will receive reserved communal table seating and a choice of entrée from Tony Waffles, which includes Chicken & Waffles, Maple Bacon, Egg & Cheese Waffles, or an Elvis-inspired Peanut Butter and Banana Waffle topped with crumbled Bacon. Complimentary sweet tea, lemonade, and the King’s favorite dessert, lemon-iced pound cake, will also be served.

• 12:30 – 4:30 pm: If I Can Dream – Fit for a King Photo Ops: There is no doubt that when one thinks of Elvis, images of gyrating hips, leather jackets, slicked pompadour hair and Cadillacs come to mind.

On display to be enjoyed as a photo opportunity to round out what would have been the King of Rock and Roll’s 88th birthday will be a rare 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood. This relic of 1950s Americana sports its original “Brenton Blue” paint color, taken from the Brenton butterfly, all original interior, audacious trim and chrome and those iconic fins and rocket taillights.

Elvis Presley also loved Hawaii. From his first visit in November 1957 to his final vacation in March of 1977, he would visit the Islands of Hawaii on many occasions. Not only did he make three movies in Hawaii (Blue Hawaii, Girls! Girls! Girls! and Paradise, Hawaiian Style), he also came to Hawaii for live performances, the one most well-known being the show on January 14, 1973, telecasted worldwide as Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii.

Attendees can step into Elvis’ shoes for a photo opportunity to recreate Elvis’ Lobby Card for the 1966 film Paradise – Hawaiian Style, complete with Hula Dancers, Hawaiian Shirt, Floral Lei, and Guitar.

• 1:30 – 3 p.m.: Shake, Rattle and Roll: As the best-selling artist of the 1950s, second in the 1960s, winner of three Grammy Awards, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36, an inductee into multiple music halls of fame, and still recognized as the highest-selling artist to this day, the Elvis-legacy lives on and touching new generations.

Such is the case with 19-year-old Florida-native Matt Stone. With Matt’s uncanny resemblance, remarkable voice and fiery stage presence, he has earned the adoration of fans all across the country! Don’t miss the chance to dress up, dance and sing along as one of Graceland’s Top Ten Tribute Artists in the World, Matt Stone, takes guests through Elvis’s most beloved titles released in the 50s and 60s, from ‘That’s All Right Mama’ in 1956 to ‘Don’t Cry Daddy’ in 1969.

• 4:00 – 5:30 p.m.: Lawdy (Miss Clawdy): Before Elvis was dubbed the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, he was hailed as the “The Hillbilly Cat” and “The King of Western Bop.” The LOOP’s afternoon jam session takes attendees on a musical journey of Elvis’s love for County, R&B, and Blues, led by “Lawdy” local and award-winning guitarist, singer and songwriter Joel DaSilva.

As homage to the music that inspired Elvis and that which he inspired, DaSilva will be joined on stage for a 90-minute performance alongside a stellar lineup of South Florida’s best representatives of the genre, including Joey Gilmore, Josh Rowand, Kevin Muncy, Tony Testa and more.

• 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.: Viva Las Vegas! The daylong celebration concludes with a dance-a-long screening of the film “Viva Las Vegas” featuring the star of the weekend himself, which film aficionados regard as one of the best, if not the best, films he ever made in his 13-year movie career.

Yacht Rock Band pays tribute to the music known and loved by all by accurately recreating the timeless classics by bands such as Hall & Oates, Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, Chicago, Paul Simon, Seals & Crofts, America, Little River Band, as well as the biggest “one-hit-wonders” of the late 70’s and 80’s era. South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), now in its 25th anniversary season, is seeking choral singers 15 years and older of all vocal ranges to participate in its upcoming 2022-23 season chorus performances of Handel’s Messiah and Bruckner’s Te Deum. The open call will take place on Tuesday, September 13 and Tuesday, September 20, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Center for Spiritual Living Fort Lauderdale (4849 North Dixie Hwy. in Oakland Park). Rehearsals are weekly, on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m.

The South Florida Symphony Chorus will perform holiday favorite Handel’s Messiah on December 3 at 7:30 p.m. at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale and on December 4 at 4 p.m. at Broad Center at Barry University (dress rehearsals: December 2, from 5 – 8 p.m., and December 4, from 1 – 3 p.m., at Barry University and December 3, from 4 – 6 p.m., at The Parker).

Bruckner’s majestic Te Deum will be performed on April 26, at 7:30 p.m., at The Parker (dress rehearsals: April 25, from 4 – 8 p.m., and April 26, from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.).

SFSO’s celebratory 25th anniversary 2022/23 season of artistic excellence launches on November 9 at The Parker and will feature an outstanding season of classical masterworks. The South Florida Symphony Chorus is led by Maestra and Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso, Chorus Conductor Dr. Giselle Elgarresta Rios and accompanist Dr. Alan Mason.
