Join Girls’ Club for a double feature of works from the collection by multi-disciplinary artists Jeanne Jaffe and Jen Clay.
View the premiere of Jeanne Jaffe’s Alice in Dystopia, a stop motion animation short film based on the classic novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In Jaffe’s dystopian tale, Alice and The Rabbit travel through the wrong rabbit hole and find themselves in a dark and destructive future. Through a mix of marionettes, live action, shadow puppetry and archival footage, Alice searches for meaning while encountering versions of the smoking Caterpillar, the author Lewis Carroll, an extinct Dodo bird and others.
Jen Clay’s film Episode combines performative sculpture, multiple types of animation and live action footage to illustrate a first person view of a dissociative episode for the viewer. Clay’s multi-media works often involve original textiles and animations for performance, video and installation that take inspiration from horror and science fiction genres, author H.P. Lovecraft stories of cosmic madness, and actual accounts of hallucinations and supernatural sightings.
The screening will be followed by an artist talk and Q&A.
All guests must bring and wear face masks while indoors.

The virtual event will highlight Richards’ powerful sculpture and drawing practice, the circumstances of his passing on September 11, his friendships, and his enduring influence on cultural communities in New York City, Miami, and beyond.
Documentary film co-directors Dennis Scholl and Juan Matos join artist Luis Gispert for a one-time screening of this 30-minute, work-in-progress documentary about Michael Richards. A conversation, moderated by Donnamarie Baptiste, will follow.
This is a unique opportunity to learn about Michael Richards through the eyes and testimonials of those who were closest to him. Gispert, who was friends with Richards and is interviewed in the film, offers us a more intimate look into his life, drawing us closer to his genius.

The Heineken Cube is scheduled to make three stops, each during a key match weekend at home, starting with Oasis Wynwood on July 23-24 ahead of Inter Miami CF vs. Philadelphia Union on July 25th.
The installation is an 8-foot-tall cube featuring four sides of contemporary and interactive art. Biscayne Bay has reached its tipping point due to years of neglect, pollution and other mitigating factors. Five local filmmakers are urging residents to do something about it through videos they created for Save the Bay, a PSA competition recently held by Oolite Arts. Winners received $2,500 each to produce their 30-60 second public service announcement for the contest.
The public is invited to view the short videos and meet the contest winners during a special screening that will take place at a virtual event, starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28. Duane Eubanks was born into a family of gifted talent. Now available in South Florida! L’Chaim Farm, the only Cholov Yisroel Kosher farm in Florida, is hosting its Farmers Market every Sunday from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. The products are grown and produced on-site at L’Chaim Farm, using the highest standards of organic farming practices.
At the Farmers Market, guests can purchase products, including a variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs, a selection of KM-certified, Cholov Yisroel goat’s milk products (butter, regular milk, chocolate milk, strawberry milk, cold brew, buttermilk and cheese), free range eggs and more.
There is a goat milking demo each Sunday at 12:15 p.m., and guests can also meet and pet the goats. The Farmers Markets will include a variety of new activities each week, including horseback riding, axe throwing, fishing, cornhole, giant Jenga, horseshoes, bocce ball and more. Guests can also take a tour of the greenhouse with Farm Manager Jordan Holder.
L’Chaim Farm Head Chef Yosef Schwartz brings a passion for Kosher foods and flavors to L’Chaim Farm. He has a long history with food delivery services and even founded his own Kosher catering company, Hassid + Hipster.
Each Thursday, L’Chaim Farm also offers a selection of fresh produce and goat’s milk products for its Shabbat Pick Up from 2-6 p.m.

Locust Projects presents Hidden in Plain View, the seventh edition of the LAB MFA summer exhibition program featuring Victoria Ravelo, MFA candidate at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University.
Ravelo will be in residence June 1-30, during which time she will transform the storefront Mobile Studio into a working laboratory in which she will create sugar sculptures daily. The use of sugar references the ties of the local community to the Caribbean and the impact the sugar industry has had on the Caribbean as well as its historical significance and influence globally. Although initially only available to those in the ruling class and used as an opulent display of wealth, sugar evolved to become so accessible that those outside of this class developed their own traditions associated with it that continue today.
The finished collaboratively-created installation, on view from July 1 through August 7, serves as an archive of local memory and maps the cultural landscape of Miami’s diverse communities through space and time.

Locust Projects presents Rhythm of Speech, a new experimental audiovisual installation by Miami-based artist and musician Juan Ledesma. Ledesma’s first solo presentation draws connections between diverse musical traditions and our collective lived experiences by exploring the musical potential of spoken accents.
Ledesma’s artistic practice is in constant dialogue with his music-making and seeks to identify how space, time, and sound can materially relate to one another through process-driven explorations. For Rhythm of Speech, the artist invited three Miami-based musicians to create a musical score based on a linguistic analysis of their respective accents. Although accents are commonly considered linguistic indicators of nationality, cultural upbringing, or socio-economic background, Ledesma aims to reframe language as a collective repository of sounds that can be used towards creative musical compositions.

Locust Projects presents Homeline, a new site-specific installation by mutlidisciplinary artists Tal Amitai-Lavi and Tal Frank.
Homeline is inspired by the architectural structures of Locust Projects’ Main Gallery. The installation is composed of three domestic elements created out of unexpectedly weightless materials, including light and delicately-installed nylon strings- a window that separates the space, a projected carpet, and a slowly flowing curtain. These objects generate a succinct, close-knit architectural-sculptural setting in black and white. The installation explores reflections, inversions, illusions, and space disruptions and creates an illusionistic, dreamlike environment. Viewers are confronted by their perception and senses, entering a world whose foundations are fragile, in which life-sized architectural structures have lost their functionality and expected physicality.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will feature Florida historian Dr. Joe Knetsch on the next July 8 noon segment of its “Meet the Author” interactive Zoom series. The new free series takes place on the second Thursday of each month. Viewers may register at http://bit.ly/HFLMeetTheAuthorKnetsch.
Knetsch is the co-author with Pamela Gibson of the recently released Florida in World War I (Arcadia Publishing/The History Press, ISBN: 978-1467148290), a historical deep dive into the role a sparsely populated and largely rural Florida played as America plunged into World War I. The book delves into the state’s sacrifices and contributions with a look at its naval accomplishments – the proud USS Florida, too often mentioned as a mere adjunct to the Atlantic Fleet, receives a just accounting, as does the utterly devastating loss of the USS Tampa, the highest death toll the navy suffered in the war. Sunshine State foresters served critical roles abroad, and local libraries became essential hubs for promoting rationing and reporting news from overseas. Floridian aid workers and soldiers training for departure were stricken with the Spanish flu, a pandemic that shook the globe with force equal to the war itself.
Dr. Joe Knetsch is the author of more than 200 articles and 12 books concerning Florida history. This is his sixth book for Arcadia/The History Press and covers an area in which he has a strong interest. He has been a constant reviewer of military history books for the Journal of America’s Military Past and other professional journals. He holds a doctorate from Florida State University and, for 28 years, was the historian for the Division of State Lands, Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Since his retirement, he has continued to research and publish history. He lives in Tallahassee with his wife, Linda, and their five cats. Knetsch joins novelist Y.M. Masson, architect and historic preservation consultant Arthur Jay Marcus, historian John Bailey, plus authors Kingsley Guy and Donn R. Colee, Jr. as part of History Fort Lauderdale’s prestigious “Meet the Author” series, a chance to converse with Florida-based writers, launched in February. Upcoming novelists will be announced.

The film traces the complex tributaries of history and present-day politics in the Dominican Republic, as state-sanctioned racism seeps into mundane offices, living room meetings, and street protests.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “The Art of Tim Forman: Florida Everglades” from Saturday, July 3 through Sunday, September 26. Forman’s colorful impressionist environmentally inspired works will be on display at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue).
Tim Forman is the third generation of Formans to have been born and reared in South Florida. He first picked-up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives.

About Timbalive:
Timbalive is one of the largest and most successful groups of Timba in the United States and the world. The unique band sound, sophisticated production techniques, and a spectacular live show are second to none in the Latin Music scene. The band was created and burst onto South Florida’s music scene in August 2008, by Leo Garcia (timbales & director), offering the best of Cuban music with a mix of different rhythms from around the world. All the band’s members are highly trained musicians from the most prestigious music schools in Cuba and come from well-known groups from the Island.
Their first album, “From Miami a la Habana ” created one of the most unexpected successes in the Latin Music History in the United States. Through their vast discography, Cuban & Latin music hierarchy have shared studio sessions and stages with them. Songs from their first album such as “El Dinero”, “Ave Maria Que – Calor”, and Como Miami No Hay Na” are still played by DJs in radio stations and night clubs worldwide, fulfilling Leo’s vision of having an international Timba band based in Miami.Twelve years later and five albums, this high-octane ten-member group kept enjoying great success among the Salsa circuit across Europe, South America, Cuba, and the U.S.
About Nic & N’Taya:
Nic & N’Taya is one of only a few bands that have managed successfully to produce a creative body of work in the extremely difficult Cuban Music environment of South Florida. Their last two critically acclaimed albums “#EstoEsUnMisil” y “Tu No Querias Changüí? Coje Changüí !” has been a testament that Timba y Changüí is alive and thriving in Miami.
Changüí is a style of Cuban music that originated in the early 19th century in the eastern region of Guantánamo Province, specifically Baracoa. It arose in the sugar cane refineries and in the rural communities populated by slaves. Changüí combines the structure and elements of Spain’s canción and the Spanish guitar with African rhythms and percussion instruments of Bantu origin. Changüí is considered a predecessor of son montuno (the ancestor of modern salsa), which has enjoyed tremendous popularity in Cuba throughout the 20th century. Timba is a Cuban genre of music based on popular Cuban music along with salsa, American funk/R&B, and the strong influence of Afro-Cuban folkloric music.
Timba rhythm sections differ from their salsa counterparts because timba emphasizes the bass drum, which is not used in salsa bands.
Here’s a sparkling high-voltage band lead by singer Nick “N’Taya ” Martinez who seems to have successfully channeled the spirit and drive of the Timba & Changüí genres to a new generation of Salsa dancers. N’Taya has created a thoroughly enjoyable sound that is perfectly suited for the dance club or your next Cuban or Latin party. Many Miami bands in the past have gotten our hopes up, only to break up. Hopefully, this one will stick around for a while. Stay tuned!

The Phluid Project is Rob Smith’s response to the growing need to bend and break the barriers of gender. It provides a shopping experience focused on selling genderless apparel and empowering individuals to express themselves freely and with authenticity. Make Music Miami, the annual celebration of music on the summer solstice, returns this year on Monday, June 21 with dozens of free, virtual and in-person outdoor concerts, music lessons, jam sessions and other exciting music-making events, spotlighting music’s power to connect, comfort, unite and uplift. The Salvation Army serves over 50,000 Broward County residents, every year, and more than 70% of its funding comes directly from the community – individuals, groups and businesses.
The race is named after The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettles which are staffed during the holidays to collect funds for families in need. Last year, The Salvation Army raised $320,215, more than a 33% increase over the same period last year, in less than five weeks in November and December. The Salvation Army of Broward County also distributed 7,566 gifts to 1,114 families with 2,483 children at 2020’s drive-through Holiday Toy Shop.
The racecourse at Quiet Waters Park is sanctioned by the USATF, and the race will be timed by AccuChipUSA, Inc. Awards will be given to runners in “Top 3” categories and age groups. A FREE commemorative race t-shirt will be given to all registrants.

The festival, launched in 2019 and attended by over 50,000 supporters, culminates this year with feature performances from Charli XCX, Honey Dijon, Kandy Muse, Miss Toto, and more. The event kickoff will take place at The Oasis on June 18, 2021, followed by a neighborhood-wide takeover on June 19th. In celebration of the expansion and to draw attention to men’s health and wellness, Heavenly Spa will be hosting an exclusive Open House on Thursday, June 17th from 5PM – 8:30PM. All men, significant others and any adult seeking Father’s Day gift ideas are welcome to attend. Tickets are $25 per person and include light bites and beverages, use of his or her steam rooms and Jacuzzis, Hyperice chair massage, hand treatments, shoeshines, and tour of the spa with Jack Black treatment demonstrations. Guests who purchase $50 in Jack Black retail will also receive a swag bag including a complimentary Jack Black Lip Balm. All attendees will be entered to win a Jack Black service of their choice and dinner for two at Lona Cocina & Tequileria, the resort’s award-winning Mexican restaurant and bar.
In addition, the spa is partnering with ManKind Grooming & Services of Fort Lauderdale to offer men the chance to get a cleanup just in time for Father’s Day weekend. A very limited number of hot towel shaves featuring Jack Black are available by advance reservation for $25 ($50 value). The fee will apply towards the purchase of guest’s choice of Jack Black retail or service if purchased during event.

Bold comedienne and dance theater artist Sara Juli delves into her own experience to explore the painful, hilarious decay of a once-promising marriage. Romping through a campy pink set, this “light of the downtown dance and theater scene” (The New Yorker) fearlessly channels over-the-top humor and personal emotion with warmth and vulnerability, creating an “imaginative and brave show” (Broadway Baby) for audiences nationwide.
All summer programs through September 2021 are being sold implementing socially distant indoor seating. SMDCAC requires anyone not included in your ticket purchase to be located 6’ apart from your seats and patrons must wear a mask at all times.
