Miami Children’s Museum, Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation and artist Victor Matthews Sculpture Garden

Miami Children’s Museum, Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation and artist Victor Matthews Children’s Sculpture Garden Reception
Thursday, December 5 from 6pm- 7:30pm
Miami Children’s Museum
980 MacArthur Causeway
Miami, FL 33132
Please RSVP for this event no later than Monday, November 25 th to Yanet at (305) 373-KIDS (5437) ext 112 or yanet@miamichildrensmuseum.org.

Miami Children’s Museum, Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, and International Artist Victor Matthews will collaborate in creating a permanent Children’s Sculpture Garden at the Museum’s Watson Island location during this year’s Art Basel.

International artist Victor Matthews serves on the board of Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation in New York and has been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions in the US and abroad, including the 48th Venice Biennale, Museum Sala Uno (Rome), Stephen Wirtz Gallery (San Francisco), Perry Rubenstein Gallery (New York), Space SBH Gallery (St Barths) and The Sculpture Center (New York). Most recently, his work was chosen as part of a two-person exhibition for the 55th Venice Biennale, 2013. The work and the show then travelled to the BOCA Museum of Art from July-Sept 2013. At this years Art Basel Miami Victor will unveil a sculpture of his own and work alongside Rush Philanthropic and MCM education teams and youth in both NYC and Miami to create a permanent Children’s Sculpture Garden at MCM.

Founded by brothers Russell, Danny and Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons, Rush Philanthropic is dedicated to providing inner-city youth with significant exposure and access to the arts, and to providing exhibition opportunities to emerging and underrepresented artists. Rush’s education programs (Rush Toddlers, Kids, and Teens, and Rush Gallery in the Schools) directly serve over 2,900 students each year. Victor and Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation are excited to partner with Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) in order to further our collective mission of engaging and educating youth through art.

“It’s great for Rush to have likeminded partners like Miami Children’s Museum. This collaboration not only allows Rush’s NYC students and their Miami peers to create a sculpture celebrating their mutual communities,” says Russell Simmons, Rush Philanthropic Co-Founder, “but it also promotes the importance of arts education during Art Basel, the biggest annual arts celebration in the country”.

In the weeks leading up to Art Basel Miami 2013, Victor Matthews will work with three groups of students to collaborate on an 8-foot sculpture inspired by his own work. Rush’s NYC students will use found items and imagery from their own NYC neighborhoods. Victor Matthews will then work with students from Miami Children’s Museum after school program to create their portion of the sculpture representative of themselves, their city, and culture; Miami sessions will be held at Miami Children’s Museum and at a local Rush partner school, the New World School. Miami sessions will be held during the week of November 18th. The sculpture will be part of MCM’s permanent Children’s Sculpture Garden at the Museum’s Watson Island location.

Victor Matthews and the Rush Philanthropic Education team will also support Miami Children’s Museum’s ArtKids at Art Basel Miami Beach Convention Center location. From mixed media to building blocks and beyond, a variety of art exploration stations will be available for budding young artists to create their own original works of art. Participating children there will have the opportunity to create sculpture and other artworks inspired by the work of NYC and Miami students.

“Our partnership with Rush Philanthropic is a perfect example of how we can bring creativity and appreciation of the art world to all the children and families we come into contact with,” states Deborah Spiegelman, Executive Director and CEO of Miami Children’s Museum. “We look forward to more projects like this one in the future.”

Fernanda Salinas / Pasion del Cielo

Pasion del Cielo, located in the heart of Coral Gables, is on a mission to provide its customers with a completely unique coffee experience. Chat Chow TV met with the Pasion del Cielo’s operations director Fernanada Salinas to learn about the shop and its interesting selections.

What sets this four-year-old coffee shop apart from others is its diverse amount of coffee choices. Pasion del Cielo carries 11 different varieties of organic coffee beans, which are carefully selected from some of the world’s most exotic countries. When ordering guests can also see a comparative chart that describes the levels of aroma, flavor, body and acidity in each coffee. In addition to the wide range of coffee choices the shop also serves up pastries, sandwiches, wraps, salads and different sweets.

If guests enjoy the coffee, they can buy the coffee beans in-store to use at home or order them online at the Pasion del Cielo website. Syrups, mugs, and even artwork can also be purchased on their site and shipped throughout the country.

Decorating the shop’s walls is a rotating collection of artwork. Pasion del Cielo enjoys supporting the local art community by hosting an “artist of the month,” where each month they choose a different South Florida based artist to exhibit their artwork on the walls of the store in order to help them gain exposure in the area.

Wonder what Salinas favorite coffee bean is? Or how Pasion del Cielo’s coffee can be compared to wine? Find out all that and more in the video above.

During National Anti-Bullying Week, National Voices for Equality, Education, and Enlightenment (NVEEE) will honor community members dedicated to making a difference in the lives of youth and families at their 3rd Annual “Not on My Watch” VIP Reception. This reception is attended by elected officials, business leaders, educators, community partners and parents who support bullying prevention efforts in the South Florida community and beyond.

Sponsored by community partners Kaufman, Rossin & Co and Printhouse USA, the event takes place on Friday, November 22, 2013 at Brasileiro Restaurant (801 Brickell Bay Drive, Miami, FL 33131) from 7:00p.m – 11:00p.m and will include a live auction and special performances by NVEEE Teen Spokesperson and Peace Ambassador, Katie Steel and a dance performance by NVEEE Peace Ambassador Jordynn Lurie. For more information about NVEEE visit http://www.NVEEE.org, or to purchase tickets ($25.00) visit http://tinyurl.com/mxbefzk.

The reception will be emceed by NBC Investigative Reporter, Willard Sheppard. 2013 Honorees include: George Castrataro of the Law Offices of George Castrataro, Lori Scott of “The Achievables” , Miami Beach City Commissioner Michael Gongora, New York Times Bestselling Author Laura Duksta, alongside community media partners She Magazine and Mark’s List.

The organization is excited to welcome Dr. Bober as a special guest speaker. “Bullying remains a complex social phenomenon, which has an impact on virtually all aspects of society, said Psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Bober, Medical Director of Pediatric Psychiatry at Joe Dimaggio Children’s Hospital. “We must continue to pursue evidence based interventions and public policy changes to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all of our children.”

The purpose of the reception is to continue fundraising efforts which allows NVEEE to sponsor bullying and harassment prevention workshops throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Education is an essential component of how NVEEE engages families and communities in moving towards social change. In four years, NVEEE has reached over 15,000 students, parents, educators and administrators through its signature “Not on My Watch” School-wide Bullying & Harassment Prevention Program, and was recently featured on an episode of ABC’s “Secret Millionaire” for their work in the community.

Their signature “Not On My Watch” Bullying & Harassment Prevention Program teaches students social skills, how to model specific actions, and demonstrates ways of being and behaving that can empower students to reduce peer-harassment, as well as reduce self-harm. “Not On My Watch” serves as a catalyst to support peer-led intervention to alter school cultures around bullying. Additionally, Workshop Surveys are used to assess the school’s and community’s specific needs, and to capture data unique to each school’s social and ecological frameworks — a practice recommended in leading bullying prevention research.

This work would not be possible without the support of continued sponsors including: Kaufman, Rossin & Co., Printhouse USA, Erin Mia Milchman, Brasileiro Restaurant, Miami Events Photobooth, Sky High Design, Freedom Concierge Services, Tito’s Vodka and Allure Rejuvenation and Anti-Aging Spa.

City Theatre will host an intimate business lunch with Chris Matthews, anchor of MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews” and the NBC-syndicated “The Chris Matthews Show” on Monday, November 25, 2013. A television commentator with remarkable depth and breadth of experience, Mr. Matthews will share his in-depth political analysis, fiery opinions and sharp humor about politics, the arts, and his new book, “Tip and the Gipper: When Politics Worked”.

Matthews will begin his talk at 12 p.m. at Stearns Weaver Miller Weissler Alhadeff & Sitterson, P.A., 150 West Flagler Street, Suite 2200, Miami, FL. Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit City Theatre’s 2013-2014 Season.

Matthews has been following American politics since his teenage years and started working in the U.S. Senate after a term in the Peace Corps. He has worked as a presidential speechwriter in the White House and as top aide to Speaker of the House Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill Jr. (D-Mass.).

In the late 1980s, Matthews switched to full-time journalism as Washington Bureau Chief for the San Francisco Examiner before turning his career to television. He launched “Hardball” in 1997 and the show has been on the air every weekday night since. In 2002, NBC premiered Sunday morning’s “The Chris Matthews Show.”

He’s the author of five best-selling books, in addition to the 2011 release “Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero” and the featured book, a personal history about conservative President Ronald Reagan (served 1981-1989) and liberal Speaker Tip O’Neill. As a top aide to O’Neill, Matthews saw firsthand how the two political leaders forged compromises that shaped America’s future and became one of history’s most celebrated political pairings-the epitome of how ideological opposites can get things done.

This event is made possible by Artistic Directing Sponsor Stearns Weaver Miller Weissler Alhadeff & Sitterson, P.A. This December, the Miami Marine Stadium turns 50! To celebrate, Friends of Miami Marine Stadium will host a screening of the Elvis Presley film “Clambake”–scenes of which were shot at the Marine Stadium in 1967. The evening will include a “Latin clambake” featuring paella, a cash bar, and a comfy seat to watch the film. The event will be held outdoors in the patio (indoors if necessary) at the Coral Gables Museum currently featuring the exhibit “Concrete Paradise: Miami Marine Stadium.”

The film, which tells the story of an heir to an oil fortune (Elvis Presley) who trades places with a water ski instructor at a Florida Hotel, features Elvis in his youth as a budding heartthrob and submerses him in the 1960’s surfside antics of the South Florida lifestyle. Those attending the screening will see the vintage hydroplane boat racing shot on sight at the Marine Stadium!

Built in 1963 for boat racing, the Marine Stadium had a tremendous opening night which featured the Tommy Bartlett Water show, a 17 piece jazz orchestra, a 40 person choir singing selections from the opera Die Fledermaus, and fireworks. The Stadium hosted boat races, Easter Sunrise Services, spectacles of all kinds, and performers including Jimmy Buffett, Ray Charles, and The Who during its years of operation from 1963 to 1992. The Stadium was shuttered in 1992 after Hurricane Andrew. But, in 2008, a new non-profit group–Friends of Miami Marine Stadium–was formed to develop a plan to restore and operate the Marine Stadium. In July of 2013, the City of Miami approved the site plan as proposed by Friends of Miami Marine Stadium and fundraising has commenced.

The Clambake evening is sponsored by the Miami Parrot Heat Club. The Parrot Head Club is comprised of devout fans of Jimmy Buffett, perhaps the most beloved of all Marine Stadium performers. “There has not been a single event that has united fans of Jimmy Buffett more than that August, 1985 Live By The Bay Concert at the Marine Stadium”, said Brenda Braley, President of the Miami Parrot Head Club. “The people who were there still talk about it 28 years later while the rest of us dream that it will happen again.” There are a limited number of tickets available and they must be purchased in advance.

You are late? So what?

I once read that Miami is where punctuality comes to die.

After about 6 years living here, I think that’s fairly accurate.   I have had to change my formerly punctual ways to assimilate to the society where I live. Here, even those who complain about other people’s tardiness, can’t manage to make it on time. Still, business gets done, kids get to school, friends find each other, and life goes on because for better or for worse tardiness is embedded in the culture.

Normally, I wouldn’t give this much thought (at least not anymore) except for the fact that I am still bent out of shape over the fact that I was locked out of my cooking class because I was 5 minutes late. FIVE MINUTES.

I often look at things from an evolutionary perspective.  It is my belief that perhaps the reason why being somewhat late is normal to the point that it’s almost expected, is that we know that we live in a city where traffic is bad, parking is a nightmare, the weather can be a bit extreme, and quite frankly, most people aren’t big on efficiency.  We accept tardiness because deep down we know that it is possible we will be late too.

I know, I shouldn’t have been late (and I wouldn’t have been late had I been able to find parking).  Still, by being so strict about punctuality, I feel like they violated our social contract; and quite frankly, I was offended by their course of action.  By not letting me enter, I felt that this business (which is neither small nor local) was judging our lifestyle.  And this is not okay.

Part of the fun of living in Miami is how laid back it is.  Even when something is urgent, it somehow doesn’t seem so pressing.  I am not justifying tardiness but by the same token, I think that those who can’t tolerate it are probably in the wrong place. It is doubtful that you’ll find many locals eager to live in a hurry just so they can make it on time…

Another installment will then take the viewer on a private tour into the personal wardrobe collections of icons such as Celia Cruz, Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo, Maria Felix, Sara Montiel and Libertad Lamarque among others. The viewer will then move on to experience contemporary pieces designed by acclaimed fashion-houses including Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Christian Dior and Pucci. On display in this installment will be current pieces from Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour and fashion collectors like Bernice Steinbaum, Lili Estefan, Madeleine Kirsh of C. Madeleine’s, Tata Fernandez and the endangered animal-inspired eco-fashion collection by the Gabby Wild Foundation and Project Runway alumni. Curator Luis Valenzuela masterfully creates a visual experience with gowns, accessories and costumes that bring to life the distinctive style of some of the greatest legends of all-time.

In an effort to support Miami’s emerging design talent, Miami International University of Art & Design students Parker Trumble, Samantha de la Fuente and Mario Valladares have been selected to showcase their original pieces in “The Iconic Archive.” The Art of Fashion Show™ 2013 program will also feature a pop-up gallery highlighting one-of-a-kind fashion accessories including the Emerald Project by Lizette Chalela.

Chippendales- the #1 male revue in the world – heads from Las Vegas and Europe to Miami with plans to usher in a new entertainment experience on South Beach.

“Miami is an ideal location for us,” says Chippendales Managing Partner, Kevin Denberg. “As one of those few unique cities, like Las Vegas, where the energy is authentic and electric, we are looking forward to working with our local partners to offer one of the most exciting additions to the cityʼs nightlife scene. Our goal is for Chippendales Miami to be the ultimate pre-party on the beach for women.”

The legendary all-male production, which excites millions of women each year, has partnered with the Opium Groupʼs acclaimed Mansion Nightclub for a limited engagement beginning January 9 th and continuing each Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights through January 25, 2014. Alessandra Gold Presents KruZIn x Art Basel Series 12/4/13-12/8/13

kruzinKruZIn x Art Basel Series
Wednesday, December 4, 5pm-12am
Alessandra Gold Concept Store
3326 North Miami Ave
Miami, FL 33127

Miami’s own Alessandra Gold Concept Store (AGCS), and its resident sneaker label KruZin, will celebrate Art Basel Miami 2013 by hosting the launch of a sneaker collection honoring the coming Chinese Year of the Horse, and featuring international artist collaborations forged especially for this Basel Miami event. KruZin’s CEO, Ming Wei-Shih, will travel from the company’s Taipei headquarters to officiate the launch.

On Wednesday December 4th, 2013 AGCS will host an invite-only press and VIP viewing and artist meet-and-greet event, opening at 5:00PM for press, and at 6:30PM for other invited guests. Co-hosting the event with Alessandra Gold (KruZin Creative Director) is CEO, Author and TV personality, Tomi Rose (as seen on “Hot Listings Miami”).

Event attendees will witness the transformation of the AGCS space (inside and out) into art in its own right with a full-scale installation created by Gilberto Mendes, CEO and Art Director for famed Brazilian event-as-art company, “Perverts” (http://www.perverts.com.br).

Featured Artists:
· Yuri Tuma: born in Sao Paulo (Brazil), and living and working in Miami. Tuma’s art centers around photography, but he is a frequent collaborator in other media including video, sculpture, fashion and installation art. His art involves transformation of photograph images into formulaic patterns creating optical art pieces unusual to the field of photography (http://www.yurituma.com/).
· Malcolm Stuart: working and living in LA, Malcolm is at the forefront of contemporary airbrush art and is well known for his custom hand air brushed art and painting onto apparel, adopted by artist mavens such as Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Ke$ha and the emerging fashion house JoyRich (http://malcolmstuart.com/).
· Kamikvze – by James Velez: born and raised in Miami, James is an emergent multi-dimensional artist exhibiting superb skills in drawing and painting. Collaborations minted in this young artist’s career include Martellus Bennett, IMKING.CO and Coin$lot (http://instagram.com/kamikvze#).
· Guava de Artist was born and raised in Antigua and Barbuda. He works out of Takamatsu (Japan) and Miami. He is a self-taught graphic cartoonist that uses various materials (wood, vinyl, metal, acrylic paint, etc) to create art pieces on apparel, footwear walls, and canvases (https://www.facebook.com/guavadeartist).

“Miami is becoming a culture melting pot where some of the world’s most cutting edge international cultural events happen, Art Basel, Winter Music Conference, ULTRA, Miami International Fashion Week and Swim Week, bring people worldwide to Miami for a world-class experience. It is important for me as a Miami transplant, to rise with Miami’s star. In just two short years of creating AGCS in Miami, it has managed to become an international bridge between art and fashion. That is why this year, we felt it made sense to create clothes and shoes that celebrate what Basel means to art worldwide,” said creative director and principal, Alessandra Gold, when asked about the genesis of the Basel events and collection.

AGCS will also host three open-to-the public events on Friday December 6th, Saturday December 7th and the wrap party on Sunday December 8th. The art of Brazilian painter Fernando De Oliveira will also be displayed in the Gold Photography Studio as an appendix – additional exclusive Basel exhibit.

Stache Opens in Ft. Lauderdale with a Visit from the Ardbeg Rocket

Saturday evening marked the opening of Stache, a bar in Ft. Lauderdale with a 1920’s speakeasy theme. The grand opening featured a visit from the Ardbeg Rocket, currently touring to celebrate the launch of some of its Scotch into space back in 2011. We were given the opportunity to sample four different Ardbeg Scotches as well as a few cocktails. The brand’s Consumer Development Manager Trisha Cancilla also made a presentation about the different products.

The bar was full of models dressed like astronauts in addition to all the employees in their 1920’s attire. I got to put on goggles and get a space gun for a studio portrait, too. In the end, my favorite Scotches were the Ardbeg Galileo, finished in Marsala casks, and Ardbeg Uigeadail, finished in Sherry casks.

The bar was beautiful. Two floors with great decorations. Very roomy and comfortable with a big back yard as well. Live music played. Great theme. Bar Stache is located at 109 SW 2nd Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312, just south of Broward Blvd. If you go soon, you may see that the sign hasn’t been updated yet and still reflects the former tenant, Himmie Health Club. That’s the right place though!

New Material is a boutique exposition premiering this December at the Chesterfield Hotel, one block from Scope, and three blocks from the Untitled Art Fair, concurrent with Art Basel Miami Beach. The focus of New Material is to expose brave departures in the practices of established artists and galleries; particularly bodies of work unfettered by trends and to date untested in the commercial realm.

The focus of this year’s New Material Art Fair is to expose audiences to brave departures in the practices of established artists and galleries, and provide the opportunity for patrons to engage with these untested breaks in artistic pattern. New Material contends that economic success can sometimes stunt the impulse for experimentation, and that creativity requires risk, courage, and a willingness to at times forgo recognition, acceptance and profit for the sake of an artist’s natural inclination towards growth. This pivotal stage can include everything from subtle shifts in style, experimentation with media, materials, or recognized ranges of aesthetic interests, to a complete abandonment of the tried and true. New Material seeks to provide asylum for artists engaged in this vulnerable state of flux.

When considering the escalating number of satellite fairs, quantity can cloud quality. New Material attempts to return focus to the artist’s process as a distinguishing premise, in a context where materiality, making and the market continue to mutate.

Coconut Grove, FL
Free and open to the public

Last year’s Art Basel Week kicked off with a much talked-about tribute to Miami’s arts pioneers – alongside the city’s new cultural visionaries – with the retrospective of visionary artist Martin Kreloff’s 1976 “Miami Says Art” (which 36 years ago brought together the city’s then up-and-coming arts luminaries to look into his camera and exclaim “ART”). During last year’s Art Basel Week, Kreloff reunited cast members from his original 1976 show alongside Miami’s current crop of cultural champions, all coming together to help create a new time-capsule honoring Miami’s arts evolution, and providing a window into the city’s bright future as an art destination. The photos and resulting artwork have been kept under lock-and-key for a whole year, and the much-anticipated installation will be revealed for the first time at a preview reception for the media on Monday, December 2, at noon at the Mayfair Hotel in Coconut Grove.

Miami Says Art 2 features a wall series of portraits by Kreloff, featuring some of the original 1976 cast alongside Miami’s new museum directors, gallerists, performing arts leaders and directors of cultural institutions (all once again looking at the camera and proclaiming “ART!”). Kreloff has also collaborated with Miami artist Gustavo Oviedo on a black-box installation featuring video, projections and sound art, “Art Euphoria” melding photos, original artwork, video and sound recordings for an experiential walk-through time capsule.

The original 1976 “Miami Says Art” cast included: American figurative artist Alex Katz; Arnold L. Lehman (now the director of the Brooklyn Museum, who presented the 1976 exhibition while then serving as director of Miami‘s Metropolitan Museum and Art Center); philanthropists and collectors Ruth and Richard Shack, and Martin Z. Marguiles; Judy Drucker, cultural impresaria; socialite/designer Gloria Vanderbilt; publicist Charlie Cinnamon; Miami arts advocate Margarita Cano; gallerists Dorothy Blau, Gloria Luria and Virginia Miller (co-presenter of the 1976 exhibition); abstractionist Lynne Golob Gelfman; and the Founding Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, Lou Anne Colodny.

Last year’s tribute reprised the original 1976 art happening, gathering more than 100 arts leaders alongside original cast members, including: Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs Chairman Adolfo Henriques, and Executive Director Monty Trainer (also president of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival); director of the Brooklyn Museum Arnold Lehman; New World Symphony CEO Howard Herring; president/CEO of the Arsht Center John Richard; Dr. Carol Damian, director of the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum at FIU; Wolfsonian director Cathy Leff; Dr. Jeffrey Hodgson, New World School of the Arts Provost; Ruth Shack; Dahlia Morgan; Swannee DiMare, Frances Sevilla-Sacasa; Dennis Edwards; Carmen Betancourt-Lewis; Deborah Hoffman; Harvey Burstein; Roberta and Eric Fliss; Marc Levin; artist Lynn Gelfman; gallerist Virginia Miller; Mary Luft; Rosie Gordon-Wallace; Beth Boone; Michael and Mary Ellen Peyton; Iran Issa-Khan; Maria del Valle; Susan Caraballo; George Neary; Octavio Campos; Jane Wooldridge and Robert Rosenberg. Kreloff and Oviedo are asking last year’s participants to send in voice-recordings via their mobile phones, saying the word “ART,” to incorporate into the black box installation as sound art.

The artist Martin Kreloff says: “After many years of living and working on the West Coast, Miami welcomed me back with open arms, as if it was urging me to return home … and what a homecoming it has become! From the sleepy burg I first encountered when I moved to Miami in 1967, the city has exploded into a vibrant and vital cultural destination that pulsates with the glow of a world class art scene. Playing off the original concept of the 1976 show, we photographed Miami’s cultural and artistic leaders (both past and present) last year during Art Basel week, jubilantly proclaiming the word “ART!” From that jumping off point, I’ve taken the photos and added the playful, colorful psychedelic patterns that were utilized in the artwork from the 1976 show. I’ve also collaborated with Miami artist Gustavo Oviedo on a black box multimedia installation. What will this year’s Miami Says Art be like? All I can say is … Miami: You really know how to say ART!.” Said the General Manager of The Mayfair Hotel & Spa Miami, Axel Gasser: “The Mayfair Hotel & Spa is proud to kick off Art Basel Week with Miami Says Art-2, also launching the Mayfair Hotel’s 30th anniversary yearlong celebrations and recognizing Miami’s cultural history and the future of our art destination in true Mayfair style.”

Angel Otero: Art on the Move

Metro Rail: Government Center Stop

Now celebrating its 15th year presenting experimental contemporary art, Locust Projects is pleased to announce artist Angel Otero has been commissioned to create a work for Art on the Move, part of Locust Projects’ ongoing public commissions initiative. The New York based Puerto Rican artist embeds personal history in his densely stratified abstract paintings. Otero’s investigational process begins with thickly layered compositions painted on large planes of glass. These “oil skins” are then scraped off in sheets and draped onto canvas, revealing layers of under painting and distorting the original image. Otero’s artwork will appear on the backs of Miami Beach buses and at Miami Metro Rail stops in December 2013.
Art on the Move features specially commissioned artists’ projects in public spaces around Miami. Through this effort, new work by artists such as Nicole Eisenman, Agustina Woodgate and Liam Gillick has appeared on billboards, bus shelters and bus backs throughout the county.

From December 5th to 8th, Miami will host the 12th annual edition of Art Basel, one of the biggest art gatherings worldwide. It is time for art enthusiasts to be glamoured once again, by something we like to call Paradoxes.

On December 6th, after their very successful first encounter during Art Basel 2012; PL0T will team up with it’s acclaimed partner label LIFE AND DEATH to present the second edition of a series of events during Art Basel weekend.
Staring Tale of Us, Dj Tennis, Thugfucker and Mind Against (US debut).

After a very booming year and improbable events in the universe, the founders of Life and Death return to their beloved Miami to challenge themselves upon the creation of a materialized encounter, and take us exploring between Life and Death. Based on the vision of bringing the strange and undisguised sounds of the label to full sensory dimension, this 10 hour affair shall not resemble a conventional club night nor yet another label showcase; taking this opportunity to debut one of the labels most prominent up and comer, Mind Against; along with the already unshakable legends. Expect mind-boggling music and a physical transformation of The Vagabond’s three main performance areas, all of which will be equipped with cutting edge sound systems, including the club’s own custom Funktion 1, to ensure that patrons and art aficionados alike will enjoy the full spectrum of this exquisite multi-sensory experience.

And of course, a PL0T party is not a party without showcasing Miami’s most prominent local talent. This time we are inviting to the decks Dsan Powell and Baez, to join our notorious resident trouble maker Alejandro Sab.

Come and be part of a night of paradoxes between Life and Death.

Miami Reggae Festival 11/23/13

Miami Reggae Festival
Saturday, November 23, 1:00pm-11:00pm
Peacock Park
2820 McFarlane Rd
Miami, FL 33133
www.rockersmovement.com

The Miami Reggae Festival and its organizers, Rockers Movement, have partnered with the non-‐profit organization TECHO to raise funds, food and awareness for residents living in poverty. The November 23rd event held at Coconut Grove’s Peacock Park will unify Miami’s diverse community through music while donating a portion of all ticket proceeds plus food collected at the event to aid Dade County residents living in poverty.

Music has always had the power to unite and inspire humanitarianism. “The Miami Reggae Festival takes it to the top, offering the highest quality of performance, political ambience and service to community available anywhere, “ says Carole Boyce Davies, Writer & Cornell University Professor of English and Africana Studies. “Truly international in orientation, there is no other place where one can experience such a rich presentation of the best in reggae talent. Miami proves again, this time through its Reggae Festival, that it is the place to be for the internationalizing of Caribbean culture.”

In reflection of South Florida’s diverse cultural heritage, the Miami Reggae Festival brings together music from around the world including Stephen Marley from Jamaica, Tiken Jah Fakoly from Africa’s Ivory Coast, Cultura Profética from Puerto Rico, Natiruts from Brazil, Midnite from St. Croix USVI, Gondwana from Chile, and many more -‐ a full musical lineup is below.

Attendees of the Miami Reggae Festival are asked to bring non-‐perishable and canned food items for donation in observance of Thanksgiving. The rations collected at the event will be organized that night by TECHO volunteers and immediately re-‐ distributed the following day to families in need in Coconut Grove, Overtown and Liberty City by artists, volunteers, and staff members of TECHO and Rockers Movement.

Subsequently, a portion of proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to TECHO -‐ a youth led non-‐profit organization at work in 19 countries including Latin American and the Caribbean. Through the joint work of families living in extreme hardship and youth volunteers, TECHO seeks to overcome poverty. “Rockers Movement will amplify our message and continue to scream that Miami is committed to overcoming poverty,” says Nicolas Berardi, US CEO of TECHO. To date, the organization has mobilized more than half a million youth volunteers and built over 3,000 houses for families living in Latin American slums.

Rockers Movement, in association with Fertile Earth Foundation, Unity is Change, Dade Recycling, Artecology Organization & Lady Green Recycling, is proud to promote the Zero Waste Initiative at Miami Reggae Festival. In a committed effort towards sustainability, the Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle model will be implemented to prevent trash and organic materials from going into landfills and incinerators, thus diverting over 20 tons of waste and greatly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The festival will also work food vendors to collect edible food items to feed people and food scraps to feed animals.

Miami Reggae Festival is a family-‐friendly event featuring an artisan village of visual arts and handicrafts; various culinary vendors; an “Artecology Experience,” offering interactive games for kids about sustainability, healthy living seminars and workshops, including AEROGA ® Yoga in the Park, meditation, and dance; plus drum sessions, a bike valet, and so much more.

Tickets for Miami Reggae Festival are currently on sale and can be purchased online and through various South Florida locations. General admission tickets are $45; VIP tickets are $75 and include access to a VIP lounge with private bathrooms. Kids 12 and younger are free when accompanied by a paid adult. In the spirit of unity and service, Miami Reggae Festival is offering free admission before 3 pm to all attendees who contribute two or more non-‐perishable food items.

The Interactive Art Fair (IAF), a week-long exhibition series aimed at showcasing established and emerging artists working in technology and education, will embark on its inaugural run with a December 3-8, coinciding with Art Basel Miami Beach.
From its unique vantage point in Miami’s Park West neighborhood, recognized for its budding tech scene, the IAF will feature art, lectures, interactive workshops and music created in and for the digital realm, introducing local and global art patrons alike to the multifaceted relationship between technology and art.

“The Interactive Art Fair is a prototype for what we feel is the future of the ‘art fair’ experience,” says founder Allyson Parker of Parker Projekts. “As the cleave between art and technology narrows, the more opportunity there is for us to create that experience for a new type of art buyer.”

The IAF will prominently feature the work of accomplished artists and technologists like Gabriella Levine, who explores the relationship between art, technology and ecology, Melissa F. Clarke, known for creating multimedia installations using sound, video and interactive art, and ChiKA, who choreographs “minimalist geometric visual narratives” to live music.

“I’m very happy to be a part of a project that aims to support artists working with digital media and that addresses the intersection between art, technology and education,” says IAF curator Andrea Wolf, Director of Brooklyn’s Reverse gallery.
“New technologies confront us with an interesting challenge: to question images and to search for their true nature without being engrossed by all the tools simply capable of high precision.”

In just its first year, the IAF has secured partnerships with a wide array of renowned names, including multinational augmented reality mobile application developer Layar, the Californiabased TakeOver Agency and Miami’s own Product 81, who will illustrate the longstanding impact of the IAF within the local community.
While the IAF is high-minded, it appeals to a broad demographic, including Millennials who understand and work with various technological mediums daily. “[The IAF] is not just for the collector who can invest in a physical art piece,” says Parker. “It’s for any member of the creative class that sees the wealth of investing in ideas, and the future.” The Interactive Art Fair will host a VIP and press preview on December 3 rd, and will open to the public from December 4-8. For additional information, visit InteractiveArtFair.com or follow the IAF on Twitter: @IAF_Miami, #interactiveartfair.

The Russian Pavilion is envisioned as a forum for critics, collectors and connoisseurs to view the works and to have a unique possibility to meet some of the artists in person.

Several cultural institutions in the United State supported the idea of Russian Pavilion and became its cultural partners, including the Museum of Russian Art (New Jersey), the Kolodzei Art Foundation, Kavachnina Contemporary, Northern Cross and the Russian American Cultural Center.

Such presentations of Russian culture abroad are certainly not new. Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1929) was one of the first advocates for Russian art and culture abroad. The 1907 Russian Seasons Abroad tour was a sensation for European audiences and a triumph for Russian art. The Russian Pavilion continues the tradition of Russian Seasons into the 21st century by presenting contemporary living artists from different locations.

The inaugural Russian Pavilion NY also coincided with the centennial of the famous 1913 New York Armory Show which introduced the American public to European avant-garde painting and sculpture, including works by such European modernists as Paul Cezanne, Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin and others. Initiator of the Russian Pavilion Artem Mirolevich and Valery Yershov – two artists of contrasting styles and personalities – contribute to the spirit of the Armory Show centennial in New York by continuing the introduction of international artists to the American public.

The artists range widely in age and country of origin. They cover several generations, from Ernst Neizvestny (1925) to Sasha Meret (1955), Igor Vishnyakov (1968), Igor Molochevsky (1976), Blue Noses Group (founded in 1999 by Viacheslav Mizin and Alexander Shaburov) and others.

Coming from different backgrounds and now residing in the United States, Europe and Russia emerging and well-known artists experiment with traditional and new media in search for self-expression and a unique creative vision. Russian Pavilion features paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, photography, video installations and performances and strives for highest quality and originality.

Russian Pavilion embraces Russian culture in the United States plus cultural and historical memory and intercultural interpretations. Some of the artworks presented in the show strike and amaze the viewer’s imagination, emphasizing their unique-subjective human essence, with meaning shifting just beneath the surface. The juxtaposition and collision of different artistic individualities, styles and media make the Russian Pavilion of great interest to today’s public.

Brooklyn Brewery Food and Arts Festival 12/9/13-12/15/13

Brooklyn Brewery Food & Arts Festival
December 9 – 15
Around Miami
Website1

Brooklyn Brewery is taking its neighborhood on the road. Collaborating with friends old and new, the Brewery has bundled up some of its favorite events into The Brooklyn Brewery Mash as a benefit for Slow Food USA. Including its last stop in Miami from December 9 – 15, The Mash will drop in 11 cities during 2013 and roll out a roster of parties, comedy, concerts, pop-up supperclubs and readings, all featuring humanity’s favorite beverage.

Watch the trailer here.

“The Mash is an expression of Brooklyn art, music, food and the cultural links we see with many cities around the world,” says Brooklyn Brewery President & Co-founder Steve Hindy. “There is a revolution happening in the world of food and the world of beer, and we are happy to celebrate this revolution with our friends around the US.”

NYC food and art organizations have been closely linked to Brooklyn Brewery from the beginning. Be it a beer dinner, cook-off, concert or film festival, the ethos of these happenings has consistently mirrored the consideration and creativity behind the making of The Brewery’s beer. Paired with the flavor and flair of Brooklyn, classic nightlife is re-imagined as a more interactive experience. During The Mash, participants will enjoy an array of perennial and rare Brooklyn beers.

Helping color in The Mash, NBNY, the organizers of Brooklyn’s Bring to Light festival, will create their immersive installations of light and projection art throughout the tour. Continuing a tradition of giving back, Brooklyn Brewery cooked up The Mash as a benefit to Slow Food USA. Proceeds from every ticket sold will go to Slow Food chapters in each city.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have the support of the Brooklyn Brewery as it launches its Mash tour,” says Richard McCarthy, Executive Director of Slow Food USA. “Brooklyn Brewmaster Garrett Oliver has been a Slow Food supporter for a long time and we’re looking forward to the celebrations in the various local communities.”

Juan López
Presented in partnership with Acción Cultural Española(AC/E) and the Bass Museum of Art
On View November 16, 2013 – January 12, 2014

Juan López’ work explores the aesthetic possibilities of the urban environment, playing with spaces, mixing video projections and installations, designing complex iconic buildings and changing the perception of the architecture. In Between Walls, he introduces the pedestrian mall into the gallery in one piece while exposing the exhibition and its visitors through another. By extending drawing onto the gallery’s architecture, López manipulates the interior of the space. These interventions that modify the established could be considered a form of poetic resistance.

The 2nd annual fundraising event celebrated the revitalization plan to create visual, physical, and economically-sustainable design that involves and empowers residents, while converting the city into a true “Community of Choice.”

We got to see a special preview exhibit by renowned New York-based photographer Hunter Barnes (presenting portraits from his recent residency in Opa-locka), and an architectural installation by Germane Barnes. American hip-hop duo Black Violin performed an eclectic mix of Jazz, hip-hop, funk, and blue grass with Kev Marcus on his violin and Wil B on his viola, they were absolutely amazing.

Mad Hatter Arts Festival 11/16/13-11/17/13

Mad Hatter Arts Festival
November 16-17, 2013
Coconut Grove

The Mad Hatter Arts Festival celebrates its 9th year with a return to The Barnacle and along the sidewalks of Main Highway. This juried event features artists of all types of media. Chalk It Up! the street painting will be nearly on Commodore Plaza. Street painting dates to the 16th century Italy when artists traveled from town to town transforming streets in to temporary art galleries. This truly ephermeral art form is experiencing a 21st century renaissance. The theme is Through The Looking Glass.

As always, music is a highlight of the Mad Hatter, plus there is a participatory drum circle, various hat contests to enter, and activities for kids of all ages. Food will be available for purchase from The Barnacle Society’s concession stand or venture into the Village for drinks and treats at participating restaurants and eateries. Return with a picnic to The Barnacle on Saturday evening when the gates reopen at 6pm for a special screening of the classic, Alice In Wonderland. Movie begins at 7pm with no entry after 7:15. Movie tickets are $5 per person for ages 6 and over; $3 for ages 2-5 and free for ages under 2.

The Mad Hatter Arts Festival is a fun, zany art and music festival, held each autumn in the historic village of Coconut Grove, located on lovely Biscayne Bay. “The Grove” has a deep Bohemian history of quirky artists and musicians. In fact, the name of the festival draws its inspiration from a popular 1970s song Coconut Grove written by John Sebastian of the internationally famous group, the Lovin’ Spoonful.

The two-day event celebrates its ninth year on Saturday, November 16 and Sunday, November 17, with artists exhibiting on the grounds of The Barnacle Historic State Park and on the sidewalks along Main Highway. Other components of the Festival can be seen around the Grove. Bring your friends, bring your family, and join the fun “…in Coconut Grove.”

A 1920’S Drinking Den. Ft. Lauderdale’s Hottest Nightlife Secret Revealed. If You Can Find It!

Stroll South on SW Second Avenue from Broward Boulevard and you’ll notice a rather non-descript building with a back-lit red awning surrounding the entry. The writing on the awning features Chinese lettering and welcomes patrons to what’s called the Himmie Health Club. But don’t bother to bring your workout clothes when you enter. For inside you will find a much more interesting experience. You will find . . . Stache!

The Grand Opening of Stache is scheduled for Saturday Evening, November 16th AT 10PM. Located at 109 SW Second Avenue, it promises you a nightlife environment unparalleled in South Florida. For once you enter through its curtains you will find yourself transported, transformed and transfixed into more than just another era.

Stache will infuse you with the intimate energy of a 1920’s Speakeasy. The scene is mysterious and relaxed, yet curious and upbeat. It’s a place to escape…a swanky downtown drink haven where the walls are warmed with plush tapestries and the drink menu is flush with high-end potables.

World renowned mixologist John Lermayer has put his creative touch to the unique libations at Stache. Called the Connoisseur of Cocktails and a winner of the prestigious Domaine de Canton Bartender of the Year award, he has reached new creative heights in his offerings at Stache and he will continue to bring exciting one-of-a-kind combinations to thrill and delight those adventurous cocktail enthusiasts. In addition to perfectly poured cocktails, there is an impressive selection of quality craft beer, wine and sake. And be sure take notice of the champagnes, all of which have been expertly selected for discriminating palates.

But it is more than cocktails you’ll find at Stache! Renowned 5-star Executive Chef Shashank Agtey has put together a taste-tempting menu of delights to complement the liquid stars of the Drinking Den. Unique Tapas and devilishly sweet dessert confections will highlight a wide array of delicious treats. Great food and drink in an excitingly different and comfortable atmosphere. CU-1 Gallery and BlinkGroup are proud to present “Angels” – An Exhibition by artist Todd Brittingham. Brittingham will be debuting at the prestigious CU-1 Gallery located in Downtown Miami from Thursday, November 15th through Wednesday, November 27 th. Opening Reception will be held on November 15, 2013 at 7PM.

The CU-1 Gallery is a 5,500 square foot facility, located in the iconic Security Building in downtown Miami that opened this year in early June. The gallery emphasizes the integration of art and life. In addition to bringing contemporary European photography to Miami this gallery encourages a holistic experience of the works it exhibits.

In keeping with that tradition, CU-1 Gallery welcomes artist Todd Brittingham who will be exhibiting his newest work titled “Angels” which he describes as an exploration of forms in space. It is the combination of his love for the female form together with his appreciation of nature that is the genesis of this series which fuses those two concepts together.

The sculptures are cast in bronze through an ancient lost wax process and finished in a unique patina which brings life to his forms. Brittingham’s combination of human and animalistic sculptures gives off a simultaneously spiritual and sensual feeling for the viewer.

Todd Brittingham’s exhibition is partnered with Blink Group, (A marketing firm for visual artists) and hosted and curated by Elizabeth Reyes and Alexandra Novaro, co-founders of BlinkGroup.

Immigration reform is currently at the forefront of debate around the country and on Capitol Hill, yet Cheryl Little has spent nearly three decades battling for the rights of immigrant families and unaccompanied minors. For her unwavering support and lifetime achievement on behalf of South Florida children and families, Ms. Little will be honored with The Children’s Trust David Lawrence Jr. Champion for Children Award on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Jungle Island Treetop Ballroom.

Hundreds of children consider this nationally recognized immigration lawyer their “guardian angel” for leading them on a path to freedom and justice in a new land. Ms. Little is the executive director of Americans for Immigrant Justice, formerly known as the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center (FIAC), who has more recently devoted her energies to supporting the “Dreamers,” – youth seeking legal status who were brought to the United States by their parents illegally as children.

The Children’s Trust Champions for Children awards ceremony honors individuals and programs that have achieved greatness in their service to children and families. In honor of this year’s Champion, the event will also celebrate our diverse community in recognition of the many children and families who have immigrated to the United States from around the world and now call Miami-Dade their home. With an expected attendance of more than 700, this annual signature event has become one of the most coveted within the community of child advocates and in all of Miami-Dade County. It serves as an inspiration to others to follow in the path of all the award recipients, who include the following:

State Representative Erik Fresen for Excellence in Public Policy for effectively championing early learning through dedicated public service. Last session Rep. Fresen used his leadership to help restore $5 million in early learning funding that had been cut the previous year. Over $2 million of that funding was returned to Miami-Dade County to fund subsidized childcare slots for some 7,000 children on the waiting list. With the knowledge that their young ones were safe and engaged in learning, these parents were able to return to work to provide critical family support. First elected to the Florida House in 2008, Rep. Fresen has supported education at many levels, lobbying for funding support for Miami-Dade College, and serving as vice chair of the Pre K-12 policy committee where he advocated for higher standards for math and science.

Mimi Schultz for Excellence in Direct Service to Children and Families. For more than three decades, Mimi Schultz, formerly the artistic director of Fantasy Theatre Factory, labored with love to broaden the notion of “stage” to include schools, parks, community organizations, churches, festivals and range of other venues. While Mimi retired earlier this year, the applause continues to resound for this master arts’ educator whose creativity – writing, producing, directing and performing – has touched the lives of upwards of two million students in Miami-Dade County alone.

Family Central Positive Behavior Support Program for Excellence in School Readiness Programming. Family Central’s Positive Behavior Support (PBS) works with teachers and parents, most of them with limited education, to better facilitate early social, emotional and cognitive development in infants, young children, and children with special needs. The program targets childcare centers in primarily low-income areas in the northern part of the county, helping them to provide better care while improving relationships at all levels.

Jewish Community Services of South Florida for Excellence in Youth Programming. Jewish Community Services has been enriching lives and empowering people since its predecessor agency, Jewish Family Service of Greater Miami, was founded in 1920. Today JFS has grown to become one of the largest and most influential social service agencies in the state. JCS’ Youth Aide Mentoring Initiative serves as a cross-age peer mentoring program for female teens and their families. Girls aged 11-14 who are deemed at risk at their schools are paired with high-school aged mentors from similar backgrounds for the course of the school year. A close relationship between mentor and mentee helps to improve academic and social stability with weekly meetings through formal group sessions and a range of activities.

The ConnectFamilias Service Partnership for Excellence in Health, Family or Community Services. This program, which has attracted national attention, works with some 30 community partners in the Little Havana neighborhood to provide a coordinated, holistic system of care for children and families. By engaging and leveraging resources from the many players, the partnership helps to reduce the frustration and inefficiencies of a fragmented system so that residents get the services they need.

The Champions for Children Awards Ceremony is generously sponsored by Borinquen Medical Centers of Miami-Dade.

Guest Article by Susan Bodack: Planning a South Beach Getaway: Where to Stay and What to Pack

Planning a South Beach Getaway: Where to Stay & What to Pack
This is a guest article written by Susan Bodack, the Social Media Marketing Manager at InStyleSwimwear.com–your one-stop online shop for women’s designer swimwear and resortwear. Whether you’re a South Florida local or a reader from afar, InStyleSwimwear will help you look South Beach-chic in no time flat.

If you’re looking for a travel destination packed with sexy people, swanky night life and spicy culture, there is no other choice but South Beach. The entire city of Miami is a pretty awesome destination, but this little section of shorefront is particularly well-known for its sultry fashions and sexy nightlife. If you’re not necessarily into the wild parties and club scene, you can equally enjoy being immersed in the Little Havana atmosphere that’s just around the corner, serving up delicious foods and knock-your-socks-off coffee. South Beach really does offer something for everyone–whether you’re into relaxing on the beach, dancing the night away at the club, pigging out on delicious foods, enjoying high-end shopping or all of the above, Miami’s South Beach is the perfect winter getaway.

Where To Stay
broken shaker bar at the freehand miami hostelIf you’re looking to pinch some pennies, there are plenty of budget-friendly accommodations in the area. Since South Beach can draw in a ton of younger tourists, there are many low-cost hotels and hostels. Consider staying at the recently revamped Freehand Miami, a chic hostel offering rooms between $40 and $140 per night, depending on if you share space or not. Complete with a lush pool and a happening bar, this is a great place to recoup after a long day in the South Florida sun. Another affordable option is the SoBe Hostel. Always hosting several international travelers and backpackers, the SoBe Hostel is a great way to meet tons of interesting people all under one roof. Conveniently located near the local hotspots and situated on the edge of a million-dollar neighborhood, the prices are surprisingly low. Rooms can be arranged for less than $30 a night, depending on your accommodation preferences. You’ll have access to a pool, internet café and community kitchen, which can also help offset costs if you choose to prepare some of your own meals.

the setaiIf you’re not into the sharing space scene or are simply looking for lodging that’s a little more luxurious, consider checking into The Setai, an upscale art-deco resort where you’ll enjoy a refined breath of fresh air in all the South Beach hustle and bustle. Situated on the beach but also featuring a stunning pool area, you’ll have easy access to either swimming destination you choose. When you’re done soaking up the sun, you can retire to a suite of your choosing, ranging from a cozy studio to an incredible, awe-inspiring penthouse. With its swanky Asian-inspired atmosphere and ritzy accommodations, The Setai sets a high bar for its competitors. Equally impressive are South Beach’s SLS Hotel and Fontainebleau, but you really don’t have to search very hard to find luxury lodgings in the area!

What To Pack
la fama by luli fama south beachWhen it comes to South Beach style, pretty much anything goes–you can find runway-inspired high fashion, hipster and bohemian trends and skimpy club attire. Obviously you’ll want to look fabulously South Beach-chic, so make sure to pack accordingly. While you’ll definitely need plenty of sexy swimwear, make sure to take some classy “ready-to-wear” pieces as well for covering up on the journey to and from the water. Think breezy caftans with billowy sleeves, sleek maxi dresses and flowy tunics in fun prints, all of which can easily transition your look from the beach to the street. Stick to classic solids or vibrant colors and prints that work well with Miami’s Latin feel. A floppy beach hat and oversized glasses are a must to increase your poolside mystique, and they’ll also offer up valuable sun protection. In terms of shoes, pack for the activities you plan on taking advantage of–flip-flops for the beach and wedges and heels for night.

Regardless of where you stay or what you pack, you’re in for a fabulous fun-filled vacation full of swanky South Beach flair.

Arriving just in time for the holidays, Mouse King – a delightfully entertaining family friendly musical – will make its World Premiere with two special performances at Miami’s Mandelstam Theater (8530 SW 57th Ave, South Miami, FL 33143) on Friday, December 13 at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, December 14 at 3 p.m.

Conceived and created by renowned puppeteer Noel MacNeal – a leading light behind television’s Sesame Street and Disney’s Bear in the Big Blue House – and featuring original music written by South Florida’s highly acclaimed musician and composer Jim Camacho, Mouse King revisits the story of the seasonal favorite The Nutcracker, while adding an entirely different twist.

This original stage spectacular tells the story of The Nutcracker from an as-yet unseen perspective – the point of view of the mice characters – and, in the process, gives that perennial classic an imaginative new emphasis through the lens of modern musical theater. A cast of professional performers and puppeteers and supported by a group of local child actors has been specially selected to bring this family-friendly holiday production to life.

Tickets for Mouse King cost $20 and can be obtained via Brown Paper Tickets: http://mousekingmusical.brownpapertickets.com or 800.838.3006.

ABOUT THE CREATORS

Noel MacNeal launched his career performing on PBS’s award-winning Sesame Street, where he honed his craft with puppetry legends Jim Henson and Frank Oz. He’s been a performer on Sesame Street for almost thirty years and trains puppeteers in Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Jordan, Palestine, and India and, most recently, Pakistan, for the Sesame Workshop international co-productions of Sesame Street. Noel has also performed with the classic Muppets of The Muppet Show.

For the past decade, Noel has been the spirit and voice of Bear, the gentle and lovable star of the Emmy Award-winning series Disney’s Bear in the Big Blue House and the Disney Channel morning series, Breakfast with Bear. In 2003, Noel received a Daytime Emmy Nomination as Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series.

His repertoire of characters also includes Kako on the Nick Jr. series Oobi and Blue on Nick Jr.’s Blue’s Room. Other roles include Magellan on the award-winning series Eureeka’s Castle on Nick Jr., Madame Chairbird in the film Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird, Rabbit for Disney Channel’s Emmy Award-winning series The Book of Pooh, Leon on PBS’ The Puzzle Place, and Knock-Knock on The Great Space Coaster. In addition, he’s performed with and/or for: Woody Allen, Bill Cosby, Whoopie Goldberg, Jerry Lewis, Mickey Rooney, Emma Thompson, Wayne Brady, Dave Chappelle, Donny and Marie Osmond, Gilbert Godfrey, Tom Bergeron, Regis and Kelly, and Matt Lauer and Katie Couric. (But not all at once.)

In addition to performing, Noel is a television writer whose scripts have been featured on PBS Kids Sprout’s The Goodnight Show, Disney Channel’s Bear in the Big Blue House, PBS’ The Puzzle Place, The Magic School Bus and Cyberchase, and Nickelodeon’s Eureeka’s Castle and Gullah Gullah Island. He is also a script adviser and consultant for the international versions of Sesame Street, as well as a television director, having directed episodes of Bear in the Big Blue House and PBS Kids Sprout’s The Good Night Show. More recently, he’s added the role of author to his resume with his new, puppet-making book “Ten Minute Puppets with Noel MacNeal,” from Workman Publishing.

Jim Camacho is one of South Florida’s most renowned singers, songwriters and multi-talented musicians. The recent release of a new five-song EP entitled Everywhere (Forward Motion/Broken Records) marked his first collection of new songs since his critically acclaimed album Beachfront Defeat in 2009. It provides yet another example of Camacho’s extraordinary talents, skills he’s demonstrated in his recordings and concerts, as well as his active involvement in theater, film, television, and radio. The recipient of numerous awards – including New Times kudos for “Best Songwriter” and “Best Acoustic Performer,” as well as the publication’s recognition for “Best Album” of 2009 – Camacho has not only been an integral part of the South Florida music scene since the late ‘80s, but also an emerging talent on the national stage.

Camacho marked his entry into theatrical realms, and specifically the musical stage, with his well-received original musical, Fools’ Paradise. The production was previewed in Miami and New York, and a full scale workshop — directed and choreographed by the celebrated artistic wunderkind Jonathan Cerullo — received a full staging. That was followed by Camacho’s second original musical, Guru, which had its preview in Miami. More recently, he created, composed and premiered the critically acclaimed children’s musical The Cavie Islanders & The Troll and later created a children’s adaptation of his original musical Guru entitled The Guru of Gir. The original scores of both of these are to be released on Y&T Records.

Not content to stop there, Camacho worked with Emmy Award-nominated producer and puppeteer Noel MacNeal (Sesame Street, The Muppets) when the two men collaborated on the musical “Tales of Amazing Tricksters” which was performed at New York’s Bronx Zoo in 2012 and their new musical “The Beasts of The Magical World” is currently running there and receiving rave reviews from children and adults alike.

Camacho first made his mark with The Goods, a band that was widely-acknowledged as one of the most impressive outfits to emerge from Florida’s southernmost realms. Protégés of the late, legendary producer Tom Dowd, the band released five albums throughout the ‘90s, including the iconic rock opera 5 Steps to Getting Signed, which won the prestigious “Album of the Year” honors at the Florida Jammy Awards. The single “I’m Not Average” from their critically acclaimed album Mint, reached number one on the Radio & Record charts in Florida, and eventually led to a major label signing with a division of Polygram Records and an extraordinary biographical documentary which aired on VH1.

Continuing to expound upon the engagingly melodic stance he procured with The Goods, Camacho went on to release three highly anticipated solo albums in the new millennium, garnering the Gold Remi award in the Music Video category at the 40th Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival for his song titled “Houdini.” Camacho also contributed to several film and television soundtracks, including the Grammy-nominated, “Tom Dowd & the Language of Music,” Paris Hilton’s “Pledge This,” and “Fatboy,” nominated for “Best Use of Music in a Documentary” accolades at the Sundance Film Festival. What’s more, his song “I Don’t Need You Anymore” (from the album Beachfront Defeat) was featured prominently in the soundtrack for the hit ABC family show “Pretty Little Liars.”

By intelligent design or evolution, man was meant to run for one thing and one thing only: to stay alive. Pamplona was the first real race organized for what running should be: running from stuff that’s going to kill, gore, or maim you.

Luckily, we’ve evolved to where we only hunt for attractive potential mates, we only gather for extreme couponing, and we only run to benefit charities and our cardiovascular system.

So quit lollygagging and join us for the race that’s been ruining all other 5Ks since 2012 at Color Me Rad Miami .

Color Me Rad: gluten-free running since 2012 (all previous years were full of gluten).
