The Bass initiates a new program titled New Monuments by adding a fifth plinth to Collins Park and calling for artists to create a temporary new monument. Who or what should be memorialized on a plinth in Miami Beach, in the United States, or globally? In 2020? For the next five years, this initiative will invite five artists to answer this question with a work of art that will be on view in Collins Park for approximately 10-12 months each. The following open call for artist submissions is for the first year. Subsequent calls will be announced annually. The selection process will be made by the museum’s curatorial team.

The Bass pays for all costs relating to the selected project including production costs, engineering, installation and maintenance. The selected artist will also receive a $5,000 honorarium. If a duo or group is selected, the honorarium will be divided evenly amongst the group.

The call is open to any artist living or working in Miami-Dade County. Applications from Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (BIPOC) artists are strongly encouraged. The deadline to apply is September 1, 2020 at 5 PM EDT.

Beethoven is Back! Orchestra Miami’s annual series of free outdoor concerts- “Beethoven on the Beach”- returns this March. This year’s edition- “Pastorale”- features Beethoven’s atmospheric and beautiful Symphony N. 6 in F Major, Op. 68. Also on the program is celebrated Chilean violinist Francisca Mendoza performing Tchaikovsky’s iconic Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 55. The 38 musicians of Orchestra Miami will be led by Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi.

This year for the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, we attended the Friday night party at the National Hotel called Taste Jamaica. And, wow, we did! This was easily one of the best events we have been to in a long time. There was a good crowd, but the lines for food were not too long. It was plentiful and quickly served. All of it was so good, we could not pick favorites. Hopefully they will bring it back for next year!

To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Design Mix, the South Florida design community will be raising the roof and taking it back old-school style with a 90’s themed fashion show. Design Mix is an annual fundraising event presented by The International Interior Designer Association (IIDA) South Florida Chapter. This year, guests will be encouraged to bring back grunge, boy bands and plaid on Saturday, April 4th, from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at The Fillmore Miami Beach.

IIDA South Florida Chapter advocates for advancements in education, design excellence, legislation, leadership, accreditation and community outreach to increase the value and understanding of Interior Design as a profession. Design Mix is the organization’s signature event which raises funds to award scholarships to exemplary interior design students, legislation advocacy efforts, and continuing educational support to their practicing professionals. The focus of the event is to pair industry members with design firms in a joint mission to fabricate wearable garments made entirely out of interior finish materials provided by event sponsors. This year’s runway show will begin at 7:30 p.m. and it will feature 25 models rocking the latest trends in textiles, wall coverings, flooring, tiles, etc. All garments will be reviewed and scored by non-industry guest judges who will present awards in various categories including: Best Use of Color, Best Design Detail, Best Use of Material, Best Performance, Most Creative, Most Nostalgic, Most Blingin’, Judge’s Choice and The Homie’s Choice. This year’s judge’s panel includes fashion designers Angel Sanchez and Rene Ruiz.

Global Arts Project, Inc., and the Collins Park Neighborhood Association present the first free concert of the 2020 season, featuring the John Daversa Big Band, February 23 from 4-7 PM. Multi-Grammy winner John Daversa is one of the leading forces of large ensemble jazz today. Composed of the world’s finest musicians, Daversa’s Large Jazz Orchestra explores the vast catalog of The Beatles through Daversa’s imaginative, genre-fusing, Grammy-nominated arrangements. Special Guest vocalist Alison Wedding will be featured for this performance of Kaleidoscope Eyes. Daversa is also Chair of Studio Music and Jazz at The Frost School of Music, University of Miami. Daversa’s big band release, Kaleidoscope Eyes: Music of the Beatles (2016), reverently twists and melts the iconic Beatles songbook with a 40+ orchestra and garnered three Grammy nominations.

DJ Adora will open the show with her popular act, combining music and comedic chatter. In addition there will be food vendors, a pop-up performance by Dance NOW! Each year, The Giving Back Fund holds its “Big Game Big Give” fundraising event at a private estate in the Super Bowl city the weekend of the big game. The premiere A-list event is taking place on Saturday, February 1st, from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at a private $65 million mansion on Star Island, and will be co-hosted by famed filmmaker Michael Bay and celebrity friends. The star-studded gala has been voted the number one Super Bowl party by ESPN The Magazine.

More than 100 sports legends, NFL players, celebrities and socialites are confirmed to attend and walk the red carpet. NFL Hall of Fame legend and social activist Jim Brown will be honored with a philanthropic award, presented by Hall of Famer and Super Bowl XXXV MVP Ray Lewis. The event will also feature celebrity performances, surprise appearances, upscale cocktails, local cuisine by award-winning chef Adrianne Calvo, a live auction, a VIP rooftop lounge and dinner experience by Oasis House, and much more.

Past celebrity hosts and attendees include: Mark Wahlberg, Hilary Swank, Michael Phelps, Joe Montana, Common, Jamie Foxx, Ludacris, Demi Moore, Jay Leno, Shaquille O’Neal, Ashton Kutcher, David Schwimmer, Alec Baldwin, Aaron Rodgers, Chris Rock, Marcus Allen and Josh Brolin. Meet featured artist Elizabeth Sutton and see her solo show, Just Breathe, in the Schwartz-Jacobs Family Gallery at the Miami Beach JCC. The preview will be on Tuesday, December 3 from 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM. The exhibition will be on display from December 3, 2019 through January 24, 2020.

Many works of art betray the hand of the artist. Elizabeth Sutton’s work, however, tells of the mind of the artist. Her compositional signature is a strong undercurrent of mathematical proportions and algorithmic color placement. Nothing is accidental; everything is intuitive. And with a nod to pop and a dash of kitsch, Sutton creates compositions that are focused on enlivening spaces and uplifting spirits. Sutton believes that her compositions find engaging the viewer with organizational complexity while simultaneously entertaining with whimsy.

Elizabeth Sutton is a millennial “mom-preneur” and visual artist who has taken the nouveau arts scene by storm. In 2016, Elizabeth was selected to participate in the NYDesigns incubator program, exhibited at both the A­ffordable Art Fair & Hamptons Designer Showhouse, and was featured by Bravo’s “Million Dollar Listing,” as well as The New York Post. In 2018, Sutton partnered with Joe & The Juice in locations across New York City, in support of The Art of Elysium. Elizabeth’s tile collection for Tilebar is a two-time award collection, from Architectural Digest and HD Expo. Elizabeth recently released her first leather collection, announced exclusive partnerships with the luxury resort, Eden Rock – St Barths and Janovic, the NYC-based Paint & Decorating Center along with launching her lifestyle blog.

In keeping with the Victor Hotels brand’s embrace of art throughout its properties, the historic Breakwater Hotel will once again temporarily become home to the 2nd Contemporary Art & Collectibles At the Breakwater during Miami Art Week this year. Located at 940 Ocean Drive in the heart of the Art Deco District, From December 4-8, the hotel will play host to a comprehensive exhibition, curated, curated by Dan Hort Projects from New York City. The Surfrider Foundation Miami invites you to join us on Friday, November 15th as we transform Nikki Beach into the Surfrider Beach House–a live interactive wonderland, full of immersive performances that highlight and celebrate our local Champions of Surf and Sand.

The Surfrider Foundation is a grassroots non-profit environmental organization that works to protect the world’s oceans, waves and beaches, to raise awareness on the need for better beach water quality and monitoring efforts in South Florida.

The Institute of Financial Wellness for the Arts (IFWA) is excited to announce its partnership with Faena Theater with the “Rock the Mic” live karaoke series at Faena’s 3,000 square-foot old-Hollywood style theater.

Kicking off on Monday, Nov. 18th at 7:30 p.m., Rock the Mic will celebrate the talents of Miami’s entertainment industry and give locals and visitors an unconventional karaoke experience where they take the stage and sing along to their favorite songs. The IFWA’s house band, led by Grammy Award-winning drummer and IFWA’s Director of Artist Relations Rees Bridges, will perform a variety of songs from different genres including Pop, R&B, Latin, Classic Rock, Country and more. Hosted by Latin musical artist Arias Martin, the evening will also feature eclectic tunes by DJette Kiwi, as well as a special performance by globally renowned magician and IFWA board member Alex Ramon. Famed Executive Chef Justin Smillie of Upland Miami invites guests to an exclusive and limited eight-seat specially curated dinner at the kitchen counter of the California-inspired eatery nestled in the South of Fifth neighborhood. From Friday, November 15 through Sunday, November 17 at 7:30PM, guests can take a seat at the counter, observe Chef Justin whip up the dishes and dine up close and personal all while overlooking the action of the open-view kitchen as he showcases a five-course menu that combines seasonal flavors paired perfectly for autumn. Focusing on his passion for fresh produce and keen eye for new ingredients, Chef Justin takes diners on a culinary journey with a menu filled with vegetable-forward and seafood-inspired dishes including Crispy Artichokes, Tuna Crudo, Grilled Duck Salad, and a Whole BBQ Fish Platter among others.

Guests can reserve a seat for $95 per person with an optional $45 beverage pairing by calling the restaurant. Space is limited to eight seats per dinner and are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Upland’s Chef Kitchen Counter Dinner will occur quarterly with unique seasonal menus developed by Chef Justin available on those dates only. Future dates to come.

Reflection of The First Ever Public Showing from the NASA Original Photo Archive by Continuum and Rudolf Budja Gallery on 10/24/19

The exclusive exhibit celebrates the 50-Year Anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing with a global debut of forty never-before-seen photos from the historic missions between 1955 and 1994. Among the exhibition is the first and original photograph developed of the Neil Armstrong Footprint on the Moon. A private collector in Miami Beach has acquired the most complete vintage photo collection of original prints developed from the NASA lunar missions.

The month-long exhibition, entitled “Space-Time Continuum,” will be held at the iconic Continuum residences in Miami Beach, from October 24 to November 24. The exclusive exhibit is curated by one of the most private art collectors, Rudolf Budja, based in Miami Beach. The forty photographs have been selected from the complete NASA photo collection of 8,000 pictures acquired by Budja himself, that is now part of his personal archive at Rudolf Budja Gallery in Miami Beach. The complete collection obtained by Budja remains under copyright by NASA.

Each photograph in the collection includes the original typed description of the image by NASA on the back, the date the photograph was taken, the respective mission, together with a stamp of authenticity given by NASA administration. Thousands of photos that were not framed by NASA over the decades are under lock-and-key at Rudolf Budja Gallery, and contained within several dozen binders that were used by NASA to preserve the integrity of each image.

ARTIST

John David Jackson (born November 18, 1977), known professionally as Fabolous, is an American rapper from Brooklyn, New York City. Jackson’s career began when he was a senior in high school and ended up rapping live on American record producer and music executive DJ Clue’s radio show, then on Hot 97. Jackson was subsequently signed by DJ Clue to his label Desert Storm, and later secured a distribution deal with Elektra Records. Fabolous’ first release, Ghetto Fabolous (2001), spawned the hit singles “Can’t Deny It” and “Young’n (Holla Back)”, which led Jackson to prominence. His second release was 2003’s Street Dreams, which was supported by two Top 10 singles “Can’t Let You Go” and “Into You”.

Including the aforementioned songs, Jackson has released a string of hit singles, such as “Trade It All, Pt. 2”, “Breathe”, “Make Me Better”, “Baby Don’t Go”, “Throw It in the Bag” and “You Be Killin’ Em”. He is also known for appearing on several R&B singles, including “Superwoman Pt. II” by Lil’ Mo, “Dip It Low” by Christina Milian, “Shawty Is a 10” by The-Dream, “Addiction” by Ryan Leslie, “I Can’t Hear the Music” by Brutha, “She Got Her Own” by Jamie Foxx, “Say Aah” by Trey Songz, and much more.

In 2004, Jackson signed to Atlantic Records, after leaving Elektra, where he released Real Talk, his first and only album under Atlantic. In 2006, Jackson was let out of his contract with Atlantic and officially signed with Def Jam Recordings. Also in 2006, Jackson founded his own record label, Street Family Records. In 2007, he released From Nothin’ to Somethin’, under Def Jam. In 2009, he would go on to release his fifth album, Loso’s Way.
