Shops at Merrick Park, Coral Gables’ pristine destination for fine shopping and dining, will present “Back to Tradition,” its 18th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, sponsored by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, on Thursday, November 18, at 6 p.m. One of the largest tree lighting ceremonies and holiday celebrations in South Florida, the event will include the 50-foot tree-lighting and a live performance by South Florida’s own Preston Howell, a contestant on NBC’s The Voice. Attendees will also enjoy a variety of interactive activities, entertainment and a highly anticipated appearance by Santa Claus who will kick-off the festive season.

The retail destination will transform into a winter wonderland with a live performance by Miami’s Preston Howell of NBC’s The Voice who will serenade attendees with holiday favorites. Howell was one of just eight singers to turn four chairs during the blind auditions on The Voice Season 17. The teen accomplished the feat with a cover of “Dream a Little Dream of Me” by The Mamas and the Papas, landing a spot on Team John Legend.

The Miami Royal Ballet and Coral Gables Senior High School Gablettes will add to the festive spirit along with face painters, holiday costumed characters and a photo booth. Attendees are encouraged to spread the warmth of the season and bring unwrapped toys for children in care of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

One of the event highlights is Santa’s grand arrival down San Lorenzo Avenue on the Coral Gables Fire Department’s fire truck. Special guest host Belkys Nerey, award-winning co-anchor of WSVN Channel 7 News, will help flip the magical switch along with Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago to illuminate the tree, signaling the official start of the holiday shopping season.

This year’s popular event will introduce a new majestic 50-foot tree with a six-foot-tall, illuminated star topper. The tree is adorned with LED custom colorful lighting, concert grade sound and a snow show. Shoppers can view and pose with the holiday tree through early January 2022.

Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre, together with presenting sponsor The Children’s Trust, will host the 11th Annual Young Talent Big Dreams Virtual Finals presentation – the most widespread, free youth talent competition in Miami-Dade County. Prizes range from performing arts scholarships to cash awards, performance opportunities and more. The grand prize winner will receive four tickets to Universal Orlando and a hotel stay for two nights, courtesy of WSVN 7News, along with $500 in cash.

The talent competition features a total of six individual categories including pop/rock/rap vocals, musical theatre/jazz standards/classical vocals, dance, musical instrument, original spoken word, and original vocal and/or instrumental composition. The Brothers Grimm “go Broadway” as Sondheim and Lapine offer up a cockeyed fairy tale in Into The Woods JR., an adaptation of one of Sondheim’s most popular works performed by the Actors’ Playhouse Musical Miracles youth repertory company.

All of your favorite characters—Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk), and the Witch—meet and interact in this whimsical original story. The musical centers on a baker and his wife who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king’s festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse and wind up changed forever.

Actors’ Playhouse and Palm Beach Dramaworks have joined forces to present a virtual coproduction of The Belle of Amherst by William Luce. Based on the life of Emily Dickinson, this one-woman show tells the story of the independent, enigmatic, reclusive, witty poet through her letters, verse, and the playwright’s rich imagination, interweaving the voices of friends, family, and acquaintances to create a vivid portrait of the artist. Margery Lowe portrays the enigmatic poet and William Hayes directs.

Tickets are $30 and all proceeds will benefit PBD and Actors’ Playhouse, supplying much-needed revenue at a time when the theatres are earning no income. Once a ticket is purchased, the play can be viewed at the ticket holder’s convenience any time from April 2nd through April 6th.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade is hosting its 54th Annual Golf Classic in Memory of Charles “Bebe” Rebozo on Monday, March 15, 2021. The tournament offers players the chance to play for fun or at a competitive level. Raffle prizes, complimentary lunch and open bar is included with sponsorship packages and the purchase of a foursome.

Proceeds will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s many positive programs, including its after-school programs, homework assistance, mentoring, computer training, social skills, dance, arts and crafts and summer and athletic programs, for area youth who need them the most. The 54thAnnual Golf Classic is expected to raise significant funds, as its the signature event for Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade.

Members of the Golf Classic committee are Clint Gulley, Liana De Mena, Willie Ho, Anthony Lopez, Alex Quevedo, Fred Rebozo, Ed Soto, Marc Suarez, Ben Walker and Special Events Chair, Olga Guilarte. L. Frank Baum’s masterpiece comes to life on the Mainstage in this funny and clever musical originally produced by the award-winning Prince Street Players. After a tornado whisks her away to the magical land of Oz, young Dorothy Gale teams up with a Scarecrow, a Tin Woodsman and a Cowardly Lion to find the mighty Wizard of Oz, who can send her home. Along the way, they must avoid the clutches of the Wicked Witch of the West, who is trying to steal the mysterious magic slippers that once belonged to her evil sister… but are now on Dorothy’s feet. The 2021 Full Moon Glow-UP event series will kick off with its first event of the year on Thursday, January 28, 2021. The event will be hosted by Diario Las Americas Journalist Grethel Delgado and held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at The Coral Gables Museum’s outdoor plaza. To ensure the safety of all guests, face masks must be worn by all guests and vendors during the event.

Every month, the full moon emits a powerful energy. Since the effects are typically felt up to two weeks after the full moon phase, it’s the perfect opportunity to align the mind, body and spirit. This Full Moon “Glow-Up” event will feature a beauty and retail market hour from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with special pop-ups by Purple Lotus Spiritual Healing, Keeks Corner and Candles by Janet. During the event, guests will enjoy live DJ beats while sipping complimentary Barcelo Rum cocktails and cold pressed juices by Lo Bueno Juices. For an extra touch of glam, Kairos Hair Salon will activate a special hair braid station and Henna Artist Seema will be applying henna designs for $10- $15. The event also features a live painting of “The Moon Shadow Series” by local Miami based artist Adriana Jay. Starting at 8:00 p.m., guests will be able to relax, meditate, stretch and unwind during a one-hour yoga class led Yoga Instructor Christine Gagen.

Who: Ladies Empowerment and Action Program (L.E.A.P.) is a nonprofit in Miami that helps formerly incarcerated women transition back into normal life. Upon release, women selected for the program are given a mentor, a home, and a paid job with retail training –at the LEAP owned thrift store Dragonfly Thrift Boutique, with 100% of the boutique’s proceeds invested in LEAP initiatives. LEAP provides 300+ hours of holistic in-prison education and mentorship, employability and life skill classes, trauma informed substance abuse programming, meaningful post-release job opportunities, and paid retail training internships.

Venezuelan filmmaker Carla Forte trained initially as a dancer — her dance video works have been featured in countless festivals and galleries internationally. In her new film, she draws on her expertise about the about the demanding rehearsal process and fuses it with her unique storytelling style to create an unforgettable dynamic between two characters immersed in the creative process.

A director and an actress rehearse for a play called “Rabbit.” As they rehearse in total isolation and in increasingly grueling circumstances, two stories begin to develop and intertwine: the creation of a character, and the daily lives of those involved in its creation. Psychological abuse and mistreatment by the director soon bring the actress to a point where her deepest desires merge into the character she represents: the rabbit.

This one-of-a-kind day will include bagpipers, A U2 Tribute band, Irish dancers, food, a variety of crafts, a giant slide and loads of fun. It is free and open to the public. There is no admission charge.

Miamians of all ages will enjoy this daytime festival that offers something for everyone. Come hungry because there is lots of food—Irish and otherwise—as well as many different crafts and of course plenty of beverages to round out the day. For families with children, they can enjoy the giant slide, bounce house, rock climbing wall and merry-go-round for free.

The 41st Annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival will feature a host of entertainers including Wide Awake, a U2 Tribute band; Celtic Cross with Paddy Kelleghan; and the St. Andrews Pipe and Drum Band. Our DJ will keep everyone going during the interludes. In addition, Irish dancers from the Breffni Academy of Dance led by Michael O’Hara will provide plenty of fancy stepping and gravity-defying leaps. The young lassie participants of The Miss Colleen Pageant will be showcased on stage. Holding to the belief that “Everyone is a little bit Irish on St. Patrick’s Day,” The St. Patrick’s Day Committee has combined family-oriented entertainment and a variety of palate-pleasing delectables such as traditional corned beef & cabbage, shepherd’s pie, authentic Irish Coffee, Irish soda bread, and whiskey cake as well as a wide array of spirits and other beverages. PAWS4you, a Miami-based, non-profit animal rescue organization, in partnership with Chopard, are hosting their annual, black-tie fundraising gala, “A Million Dreams,” taking place on Friday, February 28th, 2020, at 7 p.m. at Biltmore Hotel Miami. The gala will raise funds for PAWS4you in support of their mission to save dogs from euthanasia at Miami-Dade Animal Services and combat displacement of pets with guidance and alternatives to surrender.

Can’t repeat the past? Well, of course you can and in the grandest way! This year, the Biltmore Hotel is bringing back the Roaring Twenties with a Gatsby-inspired New Year’s Eve event that will be Miami’s greatest end of year affair. Ringing in The Roaring Twenties celebrations will give guests a contemporary take on the glamourous Jazz Age along with an elegant four-course dinner, over-the-top dessert buffet, and an incredible laser light show by Event Factor. An amazing DJ will also have the party spinning while the dynamite band, Higher Ground will keep the Miami dance floor jumping into 2020.

At midnight, the champagne will be flowing and Firepower Displays’ fireworks will be lighting up the sky over the golf course. Hand-rolled cigars under the stars will be offered on the terrace while other fun activities will help ring in the new roaring decade. Guest are encouraged to wear white, gold and champagne colors.

Shops at Merrick Park will present its 16th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony with Santa’s Arrival, sponsored by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, on Thursday, November 21, at 6 p.m. One of the largest tree lighting ceremonies and holiday celebrations in South Florida, the event will include the 50’ tree-lighting, live entertainment, interactive activities, retailer pop-up stations and the highly anticipated appearance by Santa Claus.

The popular event is centered around a majestic 50-foot tree adorned with 55,000 colorful twinkling bulbs. Shops at Merrick Park will transform into a winter wonderland with live performances by the Miami Royal Ballet, Coral Gables High School Choir & Band and Miami Senior High School Marching Band plus greetings from holiday characters, giveaways and more. Shops at Merrick Park retailers will pop-up throughout the garden with special promotions and gifts.

One of the event highlights is Santa’s grand arrival down San Lorenzo Avenue on the Coral Gables Fire Department’s fire truck. Caja Caliente, home to the original Cuban tacos, is launching brunch with an incredible lineup set to reinvigorate the brunch scene in Coral Gables this Saturday, October 26th and Sunday October 27th.

Straight from Mika’s kitchen you can expect over 7 new menu items. Some of the brunch menu items will include Mika’s Disco Volador Pancakes consisting of 4 guava swirled pancakes filled with whipped cream cheese & pressed into an old school disco volador stacked on top of each other, perfectly topped with leche condensada and a never before seen homemade guava reduction. Beny Moré’s Benedict, named after the famous Cuban jazz singer, is an organic poached egg with a signature mojo hollandaise, served on an english muffin. Lastly, the Salmon Tartare tostadas will feature two homemade tostadas topped with salmon tartare, avocado, caja aioli and a poached egg. If that doesn’t have your mouth watering maybe $20 bottomless mimosas made with in house freshly squeezed orange juice will.

More features on the brunch menu include the Shakshuka a lo Cubano which is yucca hash, sofrito, black beans, Miami smokers bacon & baked eggs served in a cast iron skillet with ZTB toast. Bougie bean toast which features black bean mash, feta, sofrito, fried egg and everything bagel topping on ZTB Sourdough multigrain bread.

The limited-time event, taking place at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, will feature an impressive roster of new activations expanding upon the magic and wonder of its inaugural edition. The Coral Gables Museum and Oolite Arts are pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition Retra-Tablos: Reclaiming Culture and Ancient Textile Art that will be on view at the Museum’s Community Meeting Room from November 1st to November 17, 2019. The project was conceived by Aurora Molina and Alina Rodriguez, recipients of the Oolite Arts Creator Awards 2018.

Reclaiming Traditional Textile Arts from Guatemala

Retra-Tablos gathers a group of portraits by seventeen artists, ages 6 to 12. Every image narrates an immigrant child’s story embedded in their Mayan ancestry, legend, folklore, and his/her assimilation as recent migrant, or as a child of immigrant parents.
By combining Mayan deities, symbols, Catholic iconography, and American pop culture, the works relate to the aesthetics of the Catholic “retablos” tradition. A retablo is a framed votive painting that forms part of the Catholic altar. Its iconography was often adopted by the peoples colonized by Spaniards and turned into bright, vibrant folk art of their own.

Also on view in the gallery are backstrap woven and embroidered replicas of the young artists’ drawings created by artisans from the collective of women weavers Trama Textiles, in Guatemala.

A Year of Collaborations

Retra-Tablos is the product of a year-long arts-in-education program. For this project, Molina and Rodriguez worked with immigrant children from The Guatemalan-Maya Center in Lake Worth, Florida, in coordination with its school director, Xiomara Guerra.
By collecting and documenting the cultural narratives of Mayan children and highlighting the textile arts and huipiles of Guatemala, Retra-Tablos also pays homage to the memory of Policarpia Gaspar, co-founder of the center. Mrs. Gaspar was a Guatemalan civil war exile who devoted her life to helping refugee children and families. She passed away on this May, 2019 after a lifetime of social work.

Artist Aurora Molina has also joined efforts with Americans for Immigrant Justice and Bernice Steinbaum Gallery to exhibit a large quilt in process titled Sew America (So America Cares): Immigration Quilt. The quilt raises awareness on the current state of immigration and shines light on the increase of child death, deportation and detention. Each appliqued panel by artists, teachers, children and adults is rendered in textiles and feature the silhouetted face of a deported child in the US. The quilt will continue to grow as more artists and individuals contribute to making more panels.

Activities at the Coral Gables Museum

The Grand Opening of Retra Tablos, on Friday, November 1st, 6-10pm will be in conjunction with Coral Gables Gallery Night. It will include interactive presentations on backstrap weaving. There will be live music by students of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music and a cash bar. This event is brought to you by the Coral Gables Museum on the First Friday of every month.
Admission is free!

More activities related to the show will be offered during the Museum’s Family Day, on Saturday, November 9, 2019, 2-5 pm. Come and learn about the backstrap weaving textile arts of Guatemala; create paper embroidery; make simple weavings; and be creative using Mayan patterns on coloring book pages to make a self-portrait. There will be live marimba musical performances by students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools and more! Admission is also free.

Shops at Merrick Park will be the perfect backdrop for a one-night only Art in the Garden installation entitled “Bird Call” which includes three-dimensional works curated by Ccucu Gall-Art on Saturday, October 12, from 6 to 10 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will benefit MECVEN, a non-profit museum for the endowments of the arts.

This exhibition will include artworks from a variety of top artists dedicated to inspiring change and awareness in Miami and around the world. The experience will include wine and food sampling.

Ccucu Gall-Art, a Miami based art gallery, started operations in 2013. IKF Wonderfund is a program of Jackson Health Foundation that helps critically ill children from countries around the world gain access to life-saving and life changing medical treatments that are not available in their home country. Every year, the IKF Wonderfund Circle of Heroes Luncheon brings community leaders and philanthropists together to join the circle and raise awareness about the difficulties faced by children from around the world who seek access to healthcare in their home countries.
