Bubble Wrap has the dancers popping that irresistible stuff through rhythms in their feet, ballet steps, jumping and rolling and more hilarious antics. Do Not Resist is an urgent documentary that explores the militarization of local police departments—in their tactics, training, and acquisition of equipment—since 9/11. With unprecedented access to police conventions, equipment expos, and officers themselves, filmmaker Craig Atkinson, the son of a SWAT team member, crafts an eye-popping nonpartisan look at the changing face of law enforcement in America. This film merges the arts with contemporary and critical social issues in the U.S. today. Its creators see the film as an opportunity to create dialogue among criminal and social-justice advocates, policy makers, police leadership, and the public. In short, they see this film as a tool for education, discussion, planning, and action towards police reform in our communities.

As Cotopaxi spews ash, issuing an eerie penumbra over Quito and threatening to erupt, a young woman confronts dormant familial conflicts in Ecuadorian writer-director Juan Sebastián Jacome’s poignant new drama.
Desperate for a place to store her things as volcanic disaster looms, Caridad turns to her long-estranged Galo father for help. Galo abandoned Caridad’s mother long ago and is eager to make amends, but questions concerning the nature of his transgressions linger, straining communication between father and daughter and casting grave doubts over the possibility of reconciliation.
Alternating between the stunning spectacle of Cotopaxi and the uneasy intimacy of Caridad and Galo’s reunion, Cenizas deftly balances the grandiose and the personal, juxtaposing events beyond our control with matters that can only be resolved by having the courage to break the silence and reach out.

Thursday, 02/22/2018 – 07:00 pm –
Bill Cosford Cinema
5030 Brunson Dr,
Coral Gables, Florida 33146

Cost: Free

From Nowhere tells the story of three high-school students who are struggling with the issues that trouble all teenagers, but, in addition, these three have another issue which causes them constant concern. They are illegal aliens. They know that at any time, should someone require documentation from them, they could end up deported back to countries they don’t know and have never spent any time in. These children are really “from nowhere.” Each one wants to get papers but has to navigate the American legal system to do so. The lawyer who wants to help them makes it clear that the easiest way to obtain legal documentation is to apply for political asylum by “coming up with” some form of threat or abuse that they or their parents are afraid of if they are forced to return to their homelands. The wrenching drama was the winner of the Narrative Spotlight Audience Award at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. The film also won the Audience Award and the jury-awarded Special Mention prize at the Champs-Elysees Film Festival.
The Living Together Film Series, a program of films spread across ten nights, will be screened on selected Thursdays from September 2017 to April 2018 at MDC’s Tower Theater and at The Bill Cosford Cinema at the University of Miami. Living Together’s documentary and fiction films survey the dizzying political landscape of contemporary American cinema.

from her ocean-themed children’s book series Seaper Powers! Great for kids ages 5-9, the Seaper Powers series communicates positive messages about self-confidence, friendship, and the environment. The children will journey with Kim and Emma through the ocean, tumbling across waves to discover treasure with the help of new sea critter friends along the way. Guests will enjoy a puppet reading, short movie based on the book, and a meet-and-greet / Q&A session with the author.

Seaper Powers: In Search of Bleu Jay’s Treasure is a magical tale about a little girl, Emma, who discovers special seagrass off the island of St. Thomas. The magical grass gives her the power to talk to fish! Not only does she make new friends; she also sets off on a new adventure to find buried treasure!

Kim Cameron is a true believer in inspiring and nurturing kids. She is a vocal instructor/mentor with Guitars Over Guns and often takes her students to perform with her at local community events. While on tour in the Caribbean, she met a 12-year-old girl who had a fascination with octopi. This brief encounter inspired the creation of Mr. Octopus, a children’s tune featuring an 8-year-old whom Kim had signed to her record label. After completing the song, her co-writer and guitarist, John DePatie, encouraged her to take it to next level by writing a children’s book using the song as the basis of the story. They called the book Seaper Powers: In Search of Bleu Jay’s Treasure. Kim Cameron is also a 2-time Billboard Top 20 dance recording artist.

Learn to capture the best of what’s in bloom at the Garden. This class will review the best camera settings to create different interpretative flower images in the garden. It will teach shallow focus and hyper focal techniques to create botanical art of the flora at Fairchild. Different lighting techniques to produce dramatic images will be used and there will be a review of the work of famous flower photographers, while exploring their different techniques. Time in the field will be used to learn how to manage the subject, use the correct approach and effectively compose the image. For this class students should be familiar with their camera’s basic exposure and focus controls as it will not cover basic camera operations. Sturdy tripods and cameras with interchangeable lenses or point-and-shoot cameras with close-up settings and user-adjustable settings are strongly recommended. A 90mm or longer macro lens is highly desirable. If you do not own a macro lens, you will need a good close-up lens (one that allows you to fill your frame with subjects four inches in length). Telephoto zooms such as a 70-300mm or 70-200mm work very well in the Garden. Telephoto lenses such as 300mm also are recommended. One afternoon class on Saturday, December 9

UC|CU’s SARA GALA is Oct. 12, 2017…A magical night of Music, Dance, Art, Film, Food, Drinks & Fabulousness…At the historic Coral Gables Woman’s Club, as we Celebrate the Life of Spain’s 1950’s Iconic Diva of Music, Film and Stage and LGBT Ally, SARA MONTIEL

Sara Montiel (1928-2013) is widely considered one of Spain’s greatest female film stars of the 20th century: but it is perhaps more for what she managed, with huge skill, to come to symbolize than for her artistic output that she will be remembered long-term.

She was the first Spanish actress to conquer Hollywood in the 1950s, acting alongside Burt Lancaster and Gary Cooper – and her beauty helped her gain a trail of lovers and husbands that ranged from Hemingway (who taught her to smoke cigars) to the film director Anthony Mann.

Sara Montiel is revered as an LGBT Icon, for her beauty, fierceness & relentless pursuit of gender equality.

Enjoy divine performances of Montiel’s biggest hits by the MIAMI GAY MEN’S CHORUS, cameos by VINNA ROUGE, RichArt, Flamenco Dancing, excerpts from author JAVIER MONTILLA’s Ultimos Dias con Sara Montiel, Imagery by famed photographer ALBERTO RIVAS…

Open Bar, Gastronomic Samplings, Glamour y mas…

Guitars Over Guns proudly hosts the 4th annual Choose Your Sound Benefit Concert presented by the Miami Marlins on November 11th, 2017 at the University of Miami’s Donna Shalala Student Center, 7pm – 11pm. This year’s Choose Your Sound is gearing up to be an epic evening of music and fun in the name of our community’s future young leaders. Get down to the sounds of the 60s R&B and soul, with musical favorites performed by an all-star band comprised of Guitars Over Guns mentors and alumni, including Andrew DeMuro from Team Adam of NBC’s The Voice, Season 11 and Guitars Over Guns’ regional director of Chicago.

Guests will enjoy delicious food from SuViche and Novecento with drinks from Russian Standard Vodka, Wynwood Brewery, Rosé Piscine and Southern Wine and Spirits. A robust silent auction featuring 5-star trips, experiences, art and more will also be a highlight of the evening.

Last year with the community’s support, Guitars Over Guns raised $102,000 for programs to empower young people through mentorship and music. Thanks to this support, 626 kids were served at 14 sites as of July 2017, bringing the total to over 2,000 youth served over the last 9 years. This year our goal is to raise $150,000 allowing us to transform the future for 500 additional students living in Miami-Dade County’s most disadvantaged communities.

This event celebrates the important role that Guitars Over Guns’ arts-based mentoring programs have in keeping Miami’s young people inspired, engaged, and prepared to be successful adults. Our unique style of mentorship through the arts opens the necessary doors to create the opportunity for student success —in and out of the classroom. These young people living in Miami’s underserved communities need positive alternatives to the dangerous influences that dominate their environments. Cuts in funding for the arts and after school programs mean our students have less opportunities than ever, and as the news reports of youth violence continue to pour in, we are reminded all too often that our work has never been so important.

Purchase a ticket or become a sponsor, and be part of a movement that offers successful futures to our youth! (Tickets $100 in advance, $150 starting October 29th, and at the door. )

Appropriate for ages 5-9, the Seaper Powers series communicates positive messages about self-confidence, friendship, and the environment. The children will journey with Kim and Emma through the ocean, tumbling across waves to discover treasure with the help of new sea critter friends made along the way. Guests will enjoy a puppet reading, short movie based on the book, and a meet and greet with Q&A afterwards.

In search of Bleu Jay’s Treasure: A magical tale about a little girl (Emma) who discovers special seagrass off the island of St. Thomas. It transforms her body so that she can talk to fish! Not only does she make new friends, she sets off on a new adventure to find buried treasure!

Kim Cameron is a true believer in inspiring and nurturing kids. She is a vocal instructor/mentor with Guitars Over Guns, performing with puppets. While on tour in the Caribbean, she met a 12-year-old who had a fascination with octopi. This brief encounter inspired the creation of Mr. Octopus, a children’s tune featuring an 8-year-old whom Kim recently signed to her record label. After completing the song, her co-writer and guitarist, John DePatie, encouraged her to take it to next level by writing a children’s book using the song as the impetus. They called the book Seaper Powers, in Search for Bleu Jay’s Treasure.

All began when the Italian blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter Frank Fois, at the age of 3, picked up the guitar. His passion for the music especially the Blues and Rock, led him to play and sing every day in search of his sound and his musical soul. Over the years, Frank developed a unique style, which is reminiscent of the great bluesmen like Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mike Bloomfield and BB King. A fundamental part of his style is his voice with which manages to excite those who hear it.

During his music tour in 2013, Fois performed in Australia, the United States and in different European Countries: Germany, France, United Kingdom, Italy.

Frank lets the instrument do all the talking as he picks and bends with pinpoint accuracy. Frank’s vocals, in step with his electrifying ability on the axe, offer the complete package for this rising star, he truly puts his emotion into his music.

After moving to New York in 2014, he performed in the best clubs of Manhattan and Long Island as B.B. King Blues Club, Terra Blues, Metropolitan and many others by also jamming with various well know musicians.

During the last years, Frank played with his band “Frank Fois Band” in Europe and in the United States which includes New Jersey, California, Florida.

The sweetly poetic fairy tale Ponyo, Hayao Miyazaki’s ninth animated feature film, is a delightful spin on Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid. Ponyo is a magical and visually enthralling children’s story, a joy for all ages, and marks another milestone in Miyazaki’s career. Perfect for audiences of all ages, it centers on the friendship between five-year-old Sosuke and a magical goldfish named Ponyo, the young daughter of a sorcerer father and a sea-goddess mother. After a chance encounter, Ponyo yearns to become a human so she can be with Sosuke. As to be expected with Miyazaki, the film is awash in pure unbridled imagination and visual wonder — but it is the tender love, humor, and devotion exhibited by Ponyo and Sosuke that form the emotional heart of the film.

On countless lists of best films for children, this timeless classic is perfect for kids and adults alike. My Neighbor Totoro is a fantastical walk in the woods. Nestled in the Japanese countryside in a new and unfamiliar town, two young sisters meet enchanted dust bunnies and mythical beings while their father cares for their ailing mother. The girls first meet a small Totoro that leads them into the thicket of magical creatures that include the titular Totoro himself and a ride on the Cat Bus. As he is wont to do, Miyazaki imbues his protagonists with the utmost humanity in even the most fantastic of circumstances.

In this wryly inventive parable, a kingdom within a painting is divided into three castes: the impeccably colored Alldunns, the incomplete Halfies, and the barely outlined Sketchies who are treated as outcasts. Chastised for her forbidden love of the dashing Ramo, Claire runs away into the cursed forest. Ramo and his friends journey after her, crossing over the boundaries of the forest only to arrive at the very edge of the painting – where they tumble through the canvas and into the Painter’s studio.

Few films inspire the imagination as much as Steven Spielberg’s landmark adventure film Jurassic Park. When released in 1993, its CGI and animatronic dinosaurs were unlike anything the world had seen before. It was hard not to believe an actual island was created with these long-dead behemoths roaming the land. Based on Michael Crichton’s book of the same name, the film follows paleontologists Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) as they are invited by eccentric millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) to preview his new theme park located off an island in Costa Rica that is full of live dinosaurs. But when an unscrupulous employee knocks out the power grid during a tropical storm, the dinos are unleashed, including the terrifying Tyrannosaurs rex.

The Soviet Union enters professional boxing with their best athlete: Ivan Drago. When the Russian behemoth clobbers Apollo Creed to death in the ring, Rocky Balboa challenges Drago himself to avenge Creed’s death and bring glory back to America. The most financially successful of entry in the Rocky series, Sylvester Stallone not only starred alongside action legends Carl Weathers and Dolph Lundgren, he both wrote and directed the film. It features a soundtrack full of 80’s classics, including the ever-popular “Eye of the Tiger.” But behind the glistening muscles and thrilling fights is a great boxing film that’s a statement on the power of the individual.

The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Carousel is a powerful ride of hope and tears. With stunning choreography and breathtaking music, Carousel was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s personal favorite of all their musicals, and was dubbed “the Best Musical of the 20th Century” by Time magazine. From the magical evocation of the carousel in the overture to the majestic and moving strains of the immortal song “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” this giant of the musical stage remains timeless and star bright. The poignant and heartbreaking story of the faithful Julie and her brutish husband Billy is one of the most powerful books in musical theatre history and perfectly matches its extraordinary score with the memorable songs “If I Loved You,” “June is Bustin’ Out All Over,” and Billy Bigelow’s famous “Soliloquy.”

City Theatre and GableStage are proud to co-present a one night only performance of Leslie Ayvazian’s new one-woman show, Mention My Beauty, on Monday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. Ayvazian, whose plays are often produced at City Theatre’s Summer Shorts Festival, first performed a preview of the piece at CityWrights 2015. Since then, she has developed and performed Mention My Beauty at New York’s Ensemble Studio Theatre and Cherry Lane Theatre, creating a show based on her own provocative, touching and hilarious coming of age during the 60’s and 70’s. Engaging, irreverent and timely, Mention My Beauty is also a revealing showcase for an extraordinary performer who has been seen on Broadway, off-Broadway, television and regional stages. City Theatre, which is committed to new work and its extended family of playwrights locally and nationwide, is very pleased to bring Ayvazian back to Miami for audiences to enjoy the play and performance that developed from those first pages.

City Theatre is happy to be partnering with GableStage for this event. Joe Adler, Producing Artistic Director of the company, has once again generously offered his theatre to audiences who appreciate an evening of new work in its intimate space. The performance is free, but seating is limited. Following the performance there will be a talkback discussion.

What: Amazing music, insane silent auction, open bar, and one helluva party for a great cause!

Why: Guitars Over Guns serves Miami’s most underserved youth through a unique combination of music education and mentorship that has been transforming our community for the last 8 years. All ticket sales and money raised will go towards expanding their reach to more of Miami’s most deserving students. Youth violence is at an all-time high and Guitars Over Guns needs your help to reach more young people and divert them from dangerous influences. This year’s goal is to raise $100,000— these funds will transform the future for 500 students living in our nation’s most disadvantaged communities.
