THE SOUTH BEACH CHAMBER ENSEMBLE
presents
COLERIDGE-TAYLOR AND BRAHMS
CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
With Host Nicole Henry
Guest Musicians Chauncey Patterson, viola, and
Andres Candamil, clarinet

WHAT: Coleridge-Taylor: Clarinet Quintet in F# minor, Op. 10
Brahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op.115

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was an English composer and conductor. Of mixed race birth, he achieved such success that he was referred to by white New York musicians as the “African Mahler” when he had three tours of the United States in the early 1900s. Coleridge-Taylor was particularly known for his three cantatas on the epic poem, Song of Hiawatha by American Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Coleridge-Taylor premiered the first section in 1898, when he was 22.

Johannes Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115, was written in 1891 for the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld. It is scored for a clarinet in A with a string quartet. At the time Brahms started composing his Clarinet Quintet, only a few works had been composed for this type of ensemble. Examples of clarinet quintets include those by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giacomo Meyerbeer and Alexander Glazunov. Brahms had retired from composing prior to listening to Richard Mühlfeld play. Brahms was very enthusiastic about Mühlfeld. That summer at Bad Ischl, he composed the Clarinet Quintet and his Clarinet Trio Op. 114, both of them for Mühlfeld. Brahms modeled his composition after Mozart’s.

CODED BIAS – Directed by Shalini Kantayya, follows MIT computer scientist Joy Buolamwini to explore how algorithms encode and propagate bias. Coded Bias is an American documentary film that premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. It was directed by Shalini Kantayya and follows researchers and advocates, principally MIT computer scientist Joy Buolamwini, as they explore how algorithms encode and propagate bias. Shalini Kantayya’s “Coded Bias” effectively brings to light a modern civil rights issue that can be proven with data—the bias within facial recognition programs, particularly against those who are not like the white men who originally formed such technology. (Such powerful data collecting and distributing technology is used in America by the likes of Amazon, Google, and Microsoft.)

With special talk back guests Mark A. Finlayson, Eminent Scholar Chaired Associate Professor of Computer Science at FIU’s School of Computing and Information, Gregory Johnson, a JSK Stanford Fellow and director of Code for South Florida and Ernie Hsiung, a 2015 Code for America fellow and instructor at Wyncode.

MARCH 1, 2021, @ 7 PM – Honoring International Women’s Month

THE ARTIST’S WIFE – Directed by Tom Dolby is about marriage, loyalty, love and rediscovering one’s passions. The greatest art is learning how to love. Claire Smythson, wife of the renowned abstract artist Richard Smythson, is plunged into a late-life crisis when her husband is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and is in danger of not completing the paintings for his final show. Claire attempts to shield his illness from the art community while trying to reconnect him with his estranged daughter and grandson. Claire, who has taken up painting once again, must decide whether to stand with her husband in the shadows or step into the spotlight herself.

Kareem Tabsch, award-winning filmmaker, and co-founder/director of O Cinema, will lead a conversation with Dr. William Vega, Distinguished Professor and Senior Scholar for Community Health, Florida International University and a member of the Us Against Alzheimers Advisory Board.

APRIL 5, 2021, @ 7 PM – Honoring National Poetry Month

OLIVER SACKS – HIS OWN LIFE – Directed by Ric Burns; explores the life and work of the legendary neurologist and clinical storyteller Oliver Sacks, called ‘the Poet Laureate of Medicine’. A documentary that explores the life and work of the legendary neurologist and storyteller as he shares intimate details of his battles with drug addiction, homophobia, and a medical establishment that accepted his work only decades after the fact. Sacks, known for his literary works Awakenings and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, was a fearless explorer of unknown cognitive worlds who helped redefine our understanding of the brain and mind, the diversity of human experience, and our shared humanity. The film features exclusive interviews with Sacks conducted just weeks after he received a terminal diagnosis, and months prior to his death in August 2015.

Talk back guests are noted director Ric Burns in a conversation with Kareem Tabsch, award-winning filmmaker, and co-founder/director of O Cinema.

MAY 3, 2021, @ 7 PM – Honoring National Photography Month

F11 AND BE THERE – Directed by Jethro Waters, iconic photographer Burk Uzzle comes to life as a prophet and historian, with his IP reflecting on major movements and events in American history and culture. This feature film by Jethro Waters about iconic photographer Burk Uzzle is an electrifying fusion of music, image, and dialogue. For 65 years and counting, Burk Uzzle has created some of the most iconic photographs in American history. From Martin Luther King Jr. to Woodstock to America’s small towns and back roads, Uzzle’s photographs provide a breathtaking commentary on American civil rights, race, social justice, and art. Initially grounded in documentary photography when he was the youngest photographer hired by LIFE magazine at age 23, his work grew into a combination of split-second impressions reflecting the human condition.

Talk back guests are noted director Jethro Waters in a conversation with Kareem Tabsch, award-winning filmmaker, and co-founder/director of O Cinema.

The South Beach Chamber Ensemble
presents
Black VoicesS
An Evening of Music and Thought

with guest speakers Allison Matulli and Darius Daughtry
Hosted by Nicole Henry

WHAT: The South Beach Chamber Ensemble presents a FREE Livestream broadcast of the South Beach Chamber Ensemble performing chamber music by African-American and African-French composers, with poetry and performance by Allison Matulli and Darius V. Daughtry

The program comprises four works:

Joseph Bologne: String Quartet #1 in C major (1771)
Jessie Montgomery: Strum (2012)
DBR: String Quartet No. 1, “X” (1993)
George Walker: String Quartet #1(1946)

WHO: Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799) was a champion fencer, classical composer, virtuoso violinist, friend of Mozart and conductor of the leading symphony orchestra in Paris. Today the Chevalier de Saint-Georges is best remembered as the first known classical composer who was of African ancestry; he composed numerous string quartets and other instrumental music, and opera.

Jessie Montgomery is an acclaimed composer, violinist, and educator. She is the recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award from the ASCAP Foundation, and her works are performed frequently around the world by leading musicians and ensembles. Her music interweaves classical music with elements of vernacular music, improvisation, language, and social justice, placing her squarely as one of the most relevant interpreters of 21st-century American sound and experience.

Daniel Bernard Roumain (“DBR”) is a prolific and endlessly collaborative composer, performer, educator, and social entrepreneur. “About as omnivorous as a contemporary artist gets” (New York Times), DBR has worked with artists from Philip Glass to Bill T. Jones to Lady Gaga; appeared on NPR, American Idol, and ESPN; and has collaborated with the Sydney Opera House and the City of Burlington, Vermont. He has been acclaimed as a violinist and activist.

George Theophilus Walker (1922-2018) was an American composer, pianist, and organist, who was the first African American to have won the Pulitzer Prize for Music for “Lilacs” in 1996. Over the course of five decades, he balanced a career as a concert pianist, teacher, and composer. In 1946, Walker composed his String Quartet #1. A string orchestra arrangement of the second movement of that work received its world premiere in a radio broadcast that was conducted by pianist Seymour Lipkin. Originally titled “Lament”, Walker later changed the title to “Lyric for Strings.” It has been one of the most frequently performed orchestral works by a living American composer.

The performers:

The South Beach Chamber Ensemble was founded in 1997 by Michael Andrews. It began with a free concert of Haydn and Dvorak Piano Trios at the Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach. Our Music in Beautiful Spaces series has been supported by Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council and the Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs for more than 20 years. The ensemble is one of the only arts organizations in south Florida dedicated to offering affordable chamber music programs to new audiences while showcasing local musical talent. Music in Motion: Miami to Rio, August and September 2005, was a great success. Our performances of Villa-Lobos, Copland and Mendelssohn at the Villa-Lobos Museum, Rio de Janeiro and Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach, were well received in both countries. Music in Motion: Miami-Argentina-Brazil, September 2007, included concerts and student programs in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Buenos Aires, Miami Beach and Miami Shores.

Originalmente titulado “Lament”, Walker luego cambió el título a “Lyric for Strings”.

AFRIKIN 2020: A New Way of Being 11/1/20

AFRIKIN 2020: A New Way of Being
Sunday, 11/01/2020-, 03:00 pm-06:00 pm
Website
Cost: Free

A virtual panel discussion with leaders from Africa and the Diaspora to address high-priority goals for the global community. An exploration of key questions on a changing world and COVID-19 Relief. Activism that speaks truth to power. This discussion on a new way of being upon entry into a new reality — is the fifth in the AFRIKIN series.

AFRIKIN 2020 highlights a discourse with the aforementioned panelists based on lessons learned from great leaders in thought on the urgent need for a shift to a new way of being for the removal of class and social division from our mental and spiritual framework as a global family. As the anti-racism movement progresses, humanity now focuses on a consideration of Love as the motivating force to move forward as a collective global community.

This is an essential conversation on finding ways of working together effectively in an altered world. In celebration of cultural variations, there is exploration of new behaviors and perceptions. In order to assist each other, there is now a consideration of cultural identity, economic equity and understanding of community, in all sectors, for the sharing of ideas on the circulation of resources and for the development and growth of all participants in this necessary discussion.

AFRIKIN Talks and workshops are designed to galvanize, inform and motivate an emerging global culture re-defined as, AFRIKIN – the fusion of two words – Africa (the continent) and Kinship (a sharing of characteristics and/or origins) – originating from the same source-point and existing as brothers and sisters in human kin-ship. This kinship, when realized, allows for harmonious and purposeful action in creating peaceful solutions for complex social problems.

AFRIKIN Talks has invited a distinctive selection of academics, artists, luminaries, and presenters to engage in discussion on new ways of investing in our communities. This involves the contributions of effort, resources, thought and time for development, growth, and problem solving during this unprecedented time of systemic transition within a world in crises.

Keeping with standard AFRIKIN programming, for this virtual celebration we will also feature singers, players of instruments, and dancers from various parts of the earth to provide a perspective on how different cultures occupying the same space and time converge. This expansive approach allows for the growth and progression of culture to uplift the community.

This is an opportunity for bridging the gaps between our cultural groups whether from Africa, the Americas, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Oceania, or the Diaspora at large.

The call goes out to the global family to spend the Sunday afternoon of November 1st, 2020, at 3 PM (EDT) reconnecting, reframing, and repurposing.
Tune in to AFRIKIN 2020 at afrikin.org to contribute to the effort of identifying viable solutions as we teach each other about the most singular important facet of life, which is Love as a guiding force for human action. This is the time to learn a new way of being.

The Bass initiates a new program titled New Monuments by adding a fifth plinth to Collins Park and calling for artists to create a temporary new monument. Who or what should be memorialized on a plinth in Miami Beach, in the United States, or globally? In 2020? For the next five years, this initiative will invite five artists to answer this question with a work of art that will be on view in Collins Park for approximately 10-12 months each. The following open call for artist submissions is for the first year. Subsequent calls will be announced annually. The selection process will be made by the museum’s curatorial team.

The Bass pays for all costs relating to the selected project including production costs, engineering, installation and maintenance. The selected artist will also receive a $5,000 honorarium. If a duo or group is selected, the honorarium will be divided evenly amongst the group.

The call is open to any artist living or working in Miami-Dade County. Applications from Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (BIPOC) artists are strongly encouraged. The deadline to apply is September 1, 2020 at 5 PM EDT.

An empowering series of workshops curated by Life House Hotels x Vero Santes

Part 1 – March 29:

Self Hypnosis with Ewa Josefsson

Vero Santes invites certified hypnotist Ewa Josefsson to a conversation about subconscious limiting beliefs, such as fear, shame and guilt. We learn about self hypnosis and its healing powers. Together all the participants of the workshop then co-create the hypnotic experience Ms. Josefsson will lead us through.

Hypnosis is not as mystical as you may believe, it’s actually much more common and conversational. It’s in the way you talk to yourself. It’s in the way you focus and find your flow. And it is how you open yourself up to new ideas and transform your life. Most importantly, hypnosis can make changing easy.

Ewa Josefsson is an emerging licensed hypnosis practitioner of the New York-based Divine Feminine School of Hypnosis. With a background in poetry, lucid dreaming, meditation and yoga, she’s long been known to create a safe space for positive transformation.

Tickets include participation in the event as well as bites and beverages from Mama Joon.

Orphans World Wide is a Global Charity organization that has been saving the lives of children around the world for over three decades with the sole financial support of one family. Orphans Worldwide (Orphans Global) is a globally recognized organization, which travels across the globe and finds the most vulnerable and abandoned children to provide care without any boundaries or restrictions. Their love and giving have no limit. Race, color, religion, and nationality do not affect the quality of care they provide. The OWW organization provides food, clothing, shoes, toys, hygiene supplies for young teenage girls, and school supplies, along with medical and surgical care. Hence, the one family that has been funding the entire organization without receiving any donations has decided to spread their wings to one million more children for the next 5 years. To achieve this goal, they would need the support of many more people than the supporting 6 siblings. The love and hope that the one family had implanted in thousands of children worldwide, can be spread to millions more with your help and support. Please help us “Change the world, one life at a time.”

Full particulars may be found, and reservations made, at http://orphansglobal.org/. For donations call us at (305) 788-5078.

Fillmore Miami Beach
1700 Washington Avenue,
Miami Beach, Florida 33139

Cost: $50 to $175 at door

To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Design Mix, the South Florida design community will be raising the roof and taking it back old-school style with a 90’s themed fashion show. Design Mix is an annual fundraising event presented by The International Interior Designer Association (IIDA) South Florida Chapter. This year, guests will be encouraged to bring back grunge, boy bands and plaid on Saturday, April 4th, from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at The Fillmore Miami Beach.

IIDA South Florida Chapter advocates for advancements in education, design excellence, legislation, leadership, accreditation and community outreach to increase the value and understanding of Interior Design as a profession. Design Mix is the organization’s signature event which raises funds to award scholarships to exemplary interior design students, legislation advocacy efforts, and continuing educational support to their practicing professionals. The focus of the event is to pair industry members with design firms in a joint mission to fabricate wearable garments made entirely out of interior finish materials provided by event sponsors. This year’s runway show will begin at 7:30 p.m. and it will feature 25 models rocking the latest trends in textiles, wall coverings, flooring, tiles, etc. All garments will be reviewed and scored by non-industry guest judges who will present awards in various categories including: Best Use of Color, Best Design Detail, Best Use of Material, Best Performance, Most Creative, Most Nostalgic, Most Blingin’, Judge’s Choice and The Homie’s Choice. This year’s judge’s panel includes fashion designers Angel Sanchez and Rene Ruiz.

The 90’s are often referred to the happiest decade of our lifetime. America was prospering, we had the internet and of course, Britney Spears was living her best life! Once the Design Mix fashion show ends, guests will enjoy an exclusive after party featuring live entertainment, specialty cocktails and light bites. Nikki Beach Miami Beach has just announced that it is hosting its “20 Years of Celebration” party on December 14, in honor of the global brand’s milestone moment at the venue that started it all. As Nikki Beach’s first location ever, it’s only fitting that the South of Fifth beach club destination will be throwing the grand finale of this global touring event, tied in with the brand’s signature White Party. Tickets start at $50 and are available at https://www.nikkibeachmiamievents.com.

Guests will experience all of the elements that make Nikki Beach so special: music, dining, entertainment, fashion, film and art. The day-to-night party will feature live music and entertainment, a dance troupe and specialty cocktails and wine, including the Nikki Beach x Château Minuty commemorative edition rosé bottle with custom artwork. Nikki Beach’s globally-inspired menu will be highlighted, too, and partygoers will savor the beach club’s best bites, including the brand’s oversized sushi boats, Sexy Salad and Famous Chicken Satay.

The commemorative “20 Years of Celebration” bash has visited all of Nikki Beach’s locations across the world, from Marbella to Dubai. This December, the festivities will culminate at Nikki Beach Miami Beach during the height of season. And the White Party theme will pay homage to the legendary soiree Naomi Campbell hosted in 2002 for the opening of Nikki Beach Saint Tropez with an all white dress code for her birthday. All of Nikki Beach’s locations host this signature White Party annually to kick off their season, and it has become one of the most coveted invitations for international jetsetters.

Nikki Beach Miami Beach began as a tribute to the late Nicole Penrod. What started as a beautiful garden and beach club for South Beach’s bohemian community quickly grew into the hotspot for celebrities like Michael Douglas, Leonardo DiCaprio and Madonna.

“Nikki Beach was created to celebrate the life of my daughter Nicole,” says Jack Penrod, Nikki Beach’s owner and founder. “We did not have any plans to become a global brand,” says Nikki Beach Global Chief Executive Officer, Lucia Penrod. “The magic between our family concept and our customers loyal following created a demand. It was then that we decided to strategically expand Nikki Beach worldwide, while keeping the core message behind Nikki Beach, which is a Celebration of Life.”

Today, Nikki Beach has 13 beach clubs and 5 hotels and resorts across the world, with more locations in the pipeline.

This holiday season, he is returning to his hometown to personally celebrate and release his new track, “Feliz Navidad.” with The Cris Cab Christmas Experience performances on November 27th at Bodega in Miami Beach.

Cris Cab, the wildly popular singer, songwriter and instrumentalist has taken on the challenge to fuse his native Miami style with the winter-time staple song of the season, “Feliz Navidad.” Cab’s Reggae and Latin sound enhances the original 1970’s hit, originally recorded by Puerto Rican icon, Jose Feliciano. Feliciano himself instantly gave his blessing after listening to the song firsthand, the single will be released on Friday, November 29 via Spotify. At the same time, the Prince of Miami is set to embark on a series of performances and events bringing “The Cris Cab Christmas Experience” to life in Miami introducing the track directly to his fans, the only approved version of the classic in its almost 50-year history.

Cab hails from Miami, Florida and has characterized his career by embracing his family’s Latin roots and creating a unique blend of sounds that could only come from growing up in one of the most multicultural cities in the nation. As an artist, he has combined reggae, Latin, pop, and soulful instrumentals throughout his discography. In addition to his unique sound, Cab’s live performance is an experience like no other, showcasing his six-piece band encompassed by world-class musicians.

Growing up, Cris Cab, identified his passion for music at an early age. At the age of 15, Cab became the protégé of one of the most influential figures in pop culture, Pharrell Willams. Since that life-changing moment, he has had the privilege of working and collaborating with award-winning artists such as Marc Anthony, J.Balvin, Big Sean, Mike Posner, Wyclef, B.o.B, and Farruko. He’s also had the chance to share the stage nationwide with Ariana Grande, Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith, Iggy Azalea, Lorde, and others. With his diverse recordings, Cab has become the new face of fusion, interpolating Latin, reggae and hip-hop styles to represent the true soul of Miami.

Cab has accomplished many of his childhood dreams, in an increasingly competitive and diverse field of young artists.

His latest collection, Geometry is Life, is specifically designed as a futuristic, visual sensory experience to capture realism in the subject using geometric designs. Enhanced by natural reflection as well as artificial 3D projection mapping, the collection is showcased in three separate categories, capturing the following elements: Natural Light, Enhanced Light and Artificial Light. More importantly, each artwork captures the balance between geometry, light and the spirit of the subject as if it were to come alive. ‘Geometry is Life’ is a visualization of the connection between geometry and the visual language that arises.

Miami Beach, Florida 33140

Meet featured artist Elizabeth Sutton and see her solo show, Just Breathe, in the Schwartz-Jacobs Family Gallery at the Miami Beach JCC. The preview will be on Tuesday, December 3 from 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM. The exhibition will be on display from December 3, 2019 through January 24, 2020.

Many works of art betray the hand of the artist. Elizabeth Sutton’s work, however, tells of the mind of the artist. Her compositional signature is a strong undercurrent of mathematical proportions and algorithmic color placement. Nothing is accidental; everything is intuitive. And with a nod to pop and a dash of kitsch, Sutton creates compositions that are focused on enlivening spaces and uplifting spirits. Sutton believes that her compositions find engaging the viewer with organizational complexity while simultaneously entertaining with whimsy.

Elizabeth Sutton is a millennial “mom-preneur” and visual artist who has taken the nouveau arts scene by storm. In 2016, Elizabeth was selected to participate in the NYDesigns incubator program, exhibited at both the Affordable Art Fair & Hamptons Designer Showhouse, and was featured by Bravo’s “Million Dollar Listing,” as well as The New York Post. In 2018, Sutton partnered with Joe & The Juice in locations across New York City, in support of The Art of Elysium. Elizabeth’s tile collection for Tilebar is a two-time award collection, from Architectural Digest and HD Expo. Elizabeth recently released her first leather collection, announced exclusive partnerships with the luxury resort, Eden Rock – St Barths and Janovic, the NYC-based Paint & Decorating Center along with launching her lifestyle blog.

Oneness with yourself, with the Beloved, with Community, with the Earth, and with the Universe.

11:11 Is considered a Master number, and instantly connects us with the field of unlimited potential, which allows us to receive an abundance of inspiration, insight, creativity, and openness to divine love. The number 1 appears as a direct pillar to Spirit, and is known as the direct gateway to the Divine. When that number is quadrupled, it gives us instant access to Source. Creating intentional rituals on this day pays off in miraculous ways. As we come together in a group to set our intentions on the eve of Full Moon, overlooking the sunset and the ocean, we will amplify the power of the portal with our group energy.

Open up to the possibility of extraordinary new beginnings with the alchemy of a heart opening adaptogenic cacao ceremony, followed by crystal meditation, self-healing techniques and gentle movement. Deeply relax while you are bathed in healing and transformational sound currents. Set your intention with powerful writing prompts and self reflection practice. Walk away inspired and recharged with your heart fully open to magnificent possibilities.

Other landmark releases include PHCK’s debut LP, More Than A Machine, Death On The Balcony’s landmark Shift The Perspective, and Bantwanas’ Back To Front. The exclusive exhibit celebrates the 50-Year Anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing with a global debut of forty never-before-seen photos from the historic missions between 1955 and 1994. Among the exhibition is the first and original photograph developed of the Neil Armstrong Footprint on the Moon. A private collector in Miami Beach has acquired the most complete vintage photo collection of original prints developed from the NASA lunar missions.

The month-long exhibition, entitled “Space-Time Continuum,” will be held at the iconic Continuum residences in Miami Beach, from October 24 to November 24. The forty photographs have been selected from the complete NASA photo collection of 8,000 pictures acquired by Budja himself, that is now part of his personal archive at Rudolf Budja Gallery in Miami Beach. The complete collection obtained by Budja remains under copyright by NASA.

Each photograph in the collection includes the original typed description of the image by NASA on the back, the date the photograph was taken, the respective mission, together with a stamp of authenticity given by NASA administration. Thousands of photos that were not framed by NASA over the decades are under lock-and-key at Rudolf Budja Gallery, and contained within several dozen binders that were used by NASA to preserve the integrity of each image.
