Shooters Waterfront is proud to host That’s How We Roll “Sushi 101” Thursday, August 19 at 7:00 p.m. The “roll-it-yourself” class teaches all about the art of making, plating, and sake pairing for only $40 per person. Shooters Waterfront’s team of expert sushi chefs provide step-by-step instructions and patrons are encouraged to embrace a new skill set. The class covers basic techniques such as what to prep and the secrets to scouting out the freshest fish. Then the hands-on learning experience begins as attendees learn to roll two of their own sushi rolls before perfecting chopstick dexterity.

Under the chef’s step-by-step guidance, students will learn to wield a rolling mat while crafting two of the restaurant’s popular rolls: the Hamachi Fire roll with Hamachi, jalapeno, romaine, and spicy mayo, and the Kentucky Fried roll with tempura fried chicken tender and a mango sambal slaw. Guests can then enjoy their handmade rolls with a gorgeous sunset view of the Fort Lauderdale waterfront.

Since 2009, as faculty at Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University, she focuses on teaching the impact of social determinants of health on health outcomes, addressing diversity in health professions through pipeline programs, increasing awareness of HIV prevention and health impact of climate change. Dr. Holder also serves in many leadership roles in several other medical and climate change-focused organizations, including Co-Chair of Florida Clinicians for Climate Action. Most recently, TED Talk selected her 2020 “The link between climate change, health and poverty” as one of 25, Editor’s Pick.

On Tuesday, August 10 at 7 p.m., Dustin Robinson, Esq. CPA, will present “Meet The CEOs” featuring special guests Psilera Bioscience CEO Chris Witowski, PhD and Silo Wellness CEO Douglas K. Gordon, as the second installment of Robinson’s new monthly psychedelic panel at Soho Beach House Miami.

Robinson is Founding Partner of Mr. Cannabis Law – a full service law firm focused on the cannabis and psychedelic industries; Co-Founder of Mr. Psychedelic Law – a non-profit focused on psychedelic legal reform; and Managing Principal of Iter Investments – a venture capital firm deploying capital across the psychedelic ecosystem.

Dr. Witowski co-founded Psilera Bioscience to use psychoactive natural products as building blocks to treat serious mental health afflictions. With children returning to the classroom after the pandemic, school supplies will be critical to helping them prepare and succeed. The Salvation Army of Broward County is partnering with Walmart, once again, to “Stuff the Bus” with school supplies to help underserved children in Broward County. The drive will take place from Friday, August 6, through Sunday, August 8, and will offer generous supporters several ways to donate – via Walmart’s online registry, through the organization’s secure donation portal and via drop-offs. All supplies will be distributed to school-aged children in need in Broward County just in time for the start of the new school year on Wednesday, August 18.

The Salvation Army of Broward County is currently seeking a variety of supplies including pencils, pens, calculators, paper, folders, spiral notebooks, binders, colored markers, glue sticks and more.

Individuals and businesses seeking to donate to The Salvation Army of Broward County’s “Stuff the Bus” Virtual School Supplies Drive may purchase items securely through https://tinyurl.com/StuffTheBus2021 or visit the following Walmart locations to shop and drop-off:

Walmart and The Salvation Army have partnered for more than 30 years to meet community needs through a range of social services, helping individuals and families overcome poverty and economic hardships. In addition to its school supplies drive, The Salvation Army of Broward County is feeding thousands of residents-in-need through its Food Pantry. Each Thursday, trusted Army experts provide non-perishable items and other pantry goods to more hundreds of underserved families. The organization also provides meals-to-go services for the homeless, its residents and other impoverished individuals.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will feature Florida historian Cesar A. Becerra on the next August 12 noon segment of its “Meet the Author” interactive Zoom series. The new free series takes place on the second Thursday of each month. Cesar A. Becerra is the author of Orange Blossom 2.0, a soon-to-be-released novel debuting in conjunction with the City of Miami’s 125th anniversary. Orange Blossom 2.0 is based on Becerra’s decades of research that tells the true story of the founding of Miami and the remarkable contributions of landowner, developer and savvy businesswoman Mary Brickell who seems to have been largely overlooked and overshadowed in the pages of our past. A South Florida historian who’s taken part in chronicling and sharing the stories of the region for more than two decades, Becerra is the author of half a dozen books ranging from hiking the Appalachian Trail to the logging history of the Big Cypress Preserve. Becerra is an avid explorer who drove through all 50 states in a one-year road trip to rediscover America for The Travel Channel. He has also hiked the 2,160-mile Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia, in 388 days through 14 states and 4 seasons. Becerra is former publisher of The Everglade Magazine, an award winning publication printed during Everglades National Park’s 50th anniversary. He has walked, hiked, slogged, canoed, kayaked, airboated and swamp buggied all across the Everglades. In 1997, The Miami Herald named him an “Everglades Evangelist.” Cesar’s love for the past and sense of adventure is where his two worlds unite. He has a penchant for hidden history and knows no boundaries or distances when it comes to searching for it.

Becerra joins previous novelists Dr. Joe Knetsch and Y.M. Masson, architect and historic preservation consultant Arthur Jay Marcus, historian John Bailey, plus authors Kingsley Guy and Donn R. Colee, Jr. as part of History Fort Lauderdale’s prestigious “Meet the Author” series, a chance to converse with Florida-based writers, launched in February. Upcoming novelists will be announced.

History Fort Lauderdale is currently open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., with docent guided tours, daily, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Group walking tours are available upon special request. Admission is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is free for members, military and children ages six and under. The Miami Beach Reggae Fest 2021, is the latest edition of a Festival created by Eddy Morillo, singer / songwriter and founder of Venezuela’s own Latin Reggae music group Bachaco. It is essentially a vehicle to continue to cultivate the locals’ love for Reggae music with Latin twist, which represent Miami Beach and Greater Miami’s melting pot of cultures and sounds.
The event is taking place on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at the North Beach Bandshell at 7275 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33141, and will be an all ages “Peace & Love” concert featuring three headlining performances:
Fidel Nadal, Argentinian Reggae legend and Latin Grammy nominee known for hit singles such as “Gente Que No” with Todos Tus Muertos, as well as his own “International Love”, and “Emocionado” among others;

Bachaco, performing their Reggae best plus the single “La Policia”;

Doctor Krapula, Colombia’s own Reggae/Ska infused Rock Band with 18 years of history, more tha 500 concerts in 15+ countries, seven album studios, a live DVD and five Latin Grammy nominations, as well as collaborations with Manu Chao, Ska-p, SEEED, Juanes, Café Tacvba, among others.

Join Girls’ Club for a double feature of works from the collection by multi-disciplinary artists Jeanne Jaffe and Jen Clay.

View the premiere of Jeanne Jaffe’s Alice in Dystopia, a stop motion animation short film based on the classic novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In Jaffe’s dystopian tale, Alice and The Rabbit travel through the wrong rabbit hole and find themselves in a dark and destructive future. Through a mix of marionettes, live action, shadow puppetry and archival footage, Alice searches for meaning while encountering versions of the smoking Caterpillar, the author Lewis Carroll, an extinct Dodo bird and others.

Jen Clay’s film Episode combines performative sculpture, multiple types of animation and live action footage to illustrate a first person view of a dissociative episode for the viewer. Clay’s multi-media works often involve original textiles and animations for performance, video and installation that take inspiration from horror and science fiction genres, author H.P. Lovecraft stories of cosmic madness, and actual accounts of hallucinations and supernatural sightings.

The screening will be followed by an artist talk and Q&A.

All guests must bring and wear face masks while indoors.

In conjunction with MOCA North Miami’s exhibition Michael Richards: Are You Down?, the museum honors Michael Richards’ birthday with a special film screening and conversation.

The virtual event will highlight Richards’ powerful sculpture and drawing practice, the circumstances of his passing on September 11, his friendships, and his enduring influence on cultural communities in New York City, Miami, and beyond.

Documentary film co-directors Dennis Scholl and Juan Matos join artist Luis Gispert for a one-time screening of this 30-minute, work-in-progress documentary about Michael Richards. A conversation, moderated by Donnamarie Baptiste, will follow.

This is a unique opportunity to learn about Michael Richards through the eyes and testimonials of those who were closest to him. Gispert, who was friends with Richards and is interviewed in the film, offers us a more intimate look into his life, drawing us closer to his genius.

For the past year, hundreds of thousands have enjoyed Seasons 52 Chef Elvis Bravo’s engaging cooking demonstrations virtually, as part of Cooking with The Galleria’s free online series. Now, Seasons 52 is offering a limited opportunity to meet Chef Bravo in-person on Saturday, July 31, at 2 p.m., at a special culinary experience to benefit the Heart Gallery of Broward County, a respected nonprofit organization committed to finding loving families for the hardest to place foster children.

Biscayne Bay has reached its tipping point due to years of neglect, pollution and other mitigating factors. Five local filmmakers are urging residents to do something about it through videos they created for Save the Bay, a PSA competition recently held by Oolite Arts. Winners received $2,500 each to produce their 30-60 second public service announcement for the contest.

The public is invited to view the short videos and meet the contest winners during a special screening that will take place at a virtual event, starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28. During the free community event, Oolite Arts will also hold a discussion between the filmmakers, the organization’s Cinematic Arts Manager Danielle Bender and Miami-Dade County’s Chief Bay Officer Irela Bagué.Additionally, the public can vote on their favorite PSA, which will receive a People’s Choice Award and extra $1,000, through August 12, 2021 at oolitearts.org/save-the-bay. Oolite Arts presents “Where There is Power”, a summer exhibition about the many ways that artists access, spy upon, expose, memorialize, and occasionally trouble the machinations of power. Duane Eubanks’ music consists of engaging melodies and horn blends that reflect the soft tender optimism of a relaxed quintessential smooth jazz trumpeter and that of a lively hard bop virtuoso. Duane Eubanks was born into a family of gifted talent. His mother, pianist Vera Eubanks was Kenny Barron’s first piano teacher and a professional church pianist; his brothers, renowned trombonist, Robin Eubanks and guitarist, Kevin Eubanks, former bandleader of the “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”; as well as his uncle, legendary pianist Ray Bryant all contributed to his early music education. He has performed everywhere from the Hollywood Bowl to Carnegie Hall to the Kennedy Center. At SMDCAC, he will perform songs from his highly listenable album “Things of That Particular Nature.”

Now available in South Florida! L’Chaim Farm, the only Cholov Yisroel Kosher farm in Florida, is hosting its Farmers Market every Sunday from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. The products are grown and produced on-site at L’Chaim Farm, using the highest standards of organic farming practices.

At the Farmers Market, guests can purchase products, including a variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs, a selection of KM-certified, Cholov Yisroel goat’s milk products (butter, regular milk, chocolate milk, strawberry milk, cold brew, buttermilk and cheese), free range eggs and more.

There is a goat milking demo each Sunday at 12:15 p.m., and guests can also meet and pet the goats. The Farmers Markets will include a variety of new activities each week, including horseback riding, axe throwing, fishing, cornhole, giant Jenga, horseshoes, bocce ball and more. Guests can also take a tour of the greenhouse with Farm Manager Jordan Holder.

L’Chaim Farm Head Chef Yosef Schwartz brings a passion for Kosher foods and flavors to L’Chaim Farm. He has a long history with food delivery services and even founded his own Kosher catering company, Hassid + Hipster.

Each Thursday, L’Chaim Farm also offers a selection of fresh produce and goat’s milk products for its Shabbat Pick Up from 2-6 p.m.

Locust Projects presents Hidden in Plain View, the seventh edition of the LAB MFA summer exhibition program featuring Victoria Ravelo, MFA candidate at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University.

Ravelo will be in residence June 1-30, during which time she will transform the storefront Mobile Studio into a working laboratory in which she will create sugar sculptures daily. The use of sugar references the ties of the local community to the Caribbean and the impact the sugar industry has had on the Caribbean as well as its historical significance and influence globally. Although initially only available to those in the ruling class and used as an opulent display of wealth, sugar evolved to become so accessible that those outside of this class developed their own traditions associated with it that continue today.

The finished collaboratively-created installation, on view from July 1 through August 7, serves as an archive of local memory and maps the cultural landscape of Miami’s diverse communities through space and time.

Locust Projects presents Rhythm of Speech, a new experimental audiovisual installation by Miami-based artist and musician Juan Ledesma. Ledesma’s first solo presentation draws connections between diverse musical traditions and our collective lived experiences by exploring the musical potential of spoken accents.

Ledesma’s artistic practice is in constant dialogue with his music-making and seeks to identify how space, time, and sound can materially relate to one another through process-driven explorations. For Rhythm of Speech, the artist invited three Miami-based musicians to create a musical score based on a linguistic analysis of their respective accents. Although accents are commonly considered linguistic indicators of nationality, cultural upbringing, or socio-economic background, Ledesma aims to reframe language as a collective repository of sounds that can be used towards creative musical compositions.

Locust Projects presents Homeline, a new site-specific installation by mutlidisciplinary artists Tal Amitai-Lavi and Tal Frank.

Homeline is inspired by the architectural structures of Locust Projects’ Main Gallery. The installation is composed of three domestic elements created out of unexpectedly weightless materials, including light and delicately-installed nylon strings- a window that separates the space, a projected carpet, and a slowly flowing curtain. These objects generate a succinct, close-knit architectural-sculptural setting in black and white. The installation explores reflections, inversions, illusions, and space disruptions and creates an illusionistic, dreamlike environment. Viewers are confronted by their perception and senses, entering a world whose foundations are fragile, in which life-sized architectural structures have lost their functionality and expected physicality.

Orchestra Miami presents Folk Songs and Traditions of Argentina for Families!
Introduce your kids to the rich music of Argentina in a program of tango and Argentine folk songs performed and narrated by Rosa Incaica! History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will feature Florida historian Dr. Joe Knetsch on the next July 8 noon segment of its “Meet the Author” interactive Zoom series. The new free series takes place on the second Thursday of each month. Viewers may register at http://bit.ly/HFLMeetTheAuthorKnetsch.

Knetsch is the co-author with Pamela Gibson of the recently released Florida in World War I (Arcadia Publishing/The History Press, ISBN: 978-1467148290), a historical deep dive into the role a sparsely populated and largely rural Florida played as America plunged into World War I. The book delves into the state’s sacrifices and contributions with a look at its naval accomplishments – the proud USS Florida, too often mentioned as a mere adjunct to the Atlantic Fleet, receives a just accounting, as does the utterly devastating loss of the USS Tampa, the highest death toll the navy suffered in the war. Sunshine State foresters served critical roles abroad, and local libraries became essential hubs for promoting rationing and reporting news from overseas. Floridian aid workers and soldiers training for departure were stricken with the Spanish flu, a pandemic that shook the globe with force equal to the war itself.

Dr. Joe Knetsch is the author of more than 200 articles and 12 books concerning Florida history. This is his sixth book for Arcadia/The History Press and covers an area in which he has a strong interest. He has been a constant reviewer of military history books for the Journal of America’s Military Past and other professional journals. He holds a doctorate from Florida State University and, for 28 years, was the historian for the Division of State Lands, Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Since his retirement, he has continued to research and publish history. He lives in Tallahassee with his wife, Linda, and their five cats. Knetsch joins novelist Y.M. Masson, architect and historic preservation consultant Arthur Jay Marcus, historian John Bailey, plus authors Kingsley Guy and Donn R. Colee, Jr. as part of History Fort Lauderdale’s prestigious “Meet the Author” series, a chance to converse with Florida-based writers, launched in February. Upcoming novelists will be announced.

History Fort Lauderdale is currently open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., with docent guided tours, daily, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Group walking tours are available upon special request. Admission is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is free for members, military and children ages six and under. Third Horizon Film Festival 2021, in partnership with Pérez Art Museum Miami’s Caribbean Cultural Institute (CCI), presents a screening of the acclaimed new documentary Stateless. The film traces the complex tributaries of history and present-day politics in the Dominican Republic, as state-sanctioned racism seeps into mundane offices, living room meetings, and street protests.

The screening will be followed by an extended discussion with filmmaker Michèle Stephenson and the film’s protagonist Rosa Iris Diendomi, as well as France Francois, founder and CEO of InCultured Company, an organization that works on conflict resolution and reconciliation between Haitians and Dominicans. The discussion will be moderated by filmmaker and Third Horizon member Monica Sorelle.
