The events of the last two years have affected each individual in profound ways – and as we gather here at Miami Art Basel in 2021, this group exhibit seeks to provide space to confront the Hero’s Journey we all have been through during the last two years and to unite our collective consciousness. Each featured artists’ work addresses this ancient narrative arc in its own way – provoking us to reflect on our unique journeys of loss, grief, love, fear, changes, and healing. Collectively, the works seek to tune our collective unconscious, create space to unite and reflect on this time, and remind us that challenges help us actualize our higher potentials and transform us for the better.

Murray Hidary is a multi-disciplinary artist, musician, and tech pioneer, who creates provocative, improvisational, real-time MindTravel live piano performances, which take listeners on a deep inner journey through sound. He will be performing live for this event and exhibition, providing a transformational platform for us to experience this art, time, and space.

Los Angeles-based artist Kelley Anderson of Art Botanica has created a large-scale botanical installation ‘Love Knot’, which reinforces the importance of love over fear and love as the most powerful tool for healing. “The journey of Love takes twists and turns, often unexpected, but always returns back to Love, because “Love is the only truth.”

Daniel Dugan will be doing live performance art in which he creates art using “one continuous line” that never intersects and is equally spaced. Like labyrinths from centuries ago, the function is a spiritual one: to quiet the mind and wander forward through the path, knowing you will ultimately reach the end. Each work represents the flow of life with its unexpected twists and turns, each adding an unexpected value and balance.

Half-Japanese, Los Angeles-based Faith-Ann Young hangs large-scale ‘flags’ – photo collages printed onto various fabrics, in formations, and in the open air, to create colorful, transcendent spaces where humans can gather, engage and reflect. Her flag series, Cycles of Life, features a series of archetypes, symbols, and colors, provoking views to walk through, interact and embark on their own, unique transcendent journey within.

On March 24 at 7:00 p.m., MOCA will host “Conversations at MOCA: Electric Tree with Mark Handforth and Adler Guerrier,” virtually via Zoom. During the event, artists Mark Handforth and Adler Guerrier will speak about their art practice in the public realm. As artists who recently accomplished public art projects in North Miami, they will discuss their method of bringing a public art project to life. The conversation will take us through all the major steps of the process, from conceptual ideas to development and to working with curators, museums, and governmental agencies. Moderated by Dehja Carrington, she will drive the artists elaborate about their past, present, future projects and their process.

In addition to the conversation, MOCA will premiere Making of the Electric Tree, a short documentary produced by MOCA. The documentary highlights Mark Handforth’s journey to bring the Electric Tree public art project to north Miami.

Mark Handforth was born in Hong Kong in 1969 and grew up in England. He lives and works in Miami. Based in Miami for over 20 years, Mark Handforth is profoundly tied to the legacy of the 20th-century American avant-garde. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Art in Frankfurt and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He is internationally acclaimed for his installations in the public spaces. His large-scale sculptures have been displayed in Central Park in New York, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the MCA in Chicago, and during the FIAC offsite event in Paris. Mark Handforth has also received public commissions from the cities of Paris (Porte de Bagnolet) and Zurich (Tessinerplatz).

Adler Guerrier was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and currently resides and works in Miami, FL, where he received a BFA at the New World School of the Arts. Guerrier recently had a solo exhibition at Perez Art Museum Miami, Miami, FL. He has exhibited work at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Miami, FL; The Bass Museum of Art, Miami, FL; Harn Musem of Art, Gainesville, FL; and The Whitney Biennial 2008. His works can be found in public collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, NY. His work has appeared in Art Forum, Art in America, The New York Times, and ARTNews.

SMDCAC will provide a guaranteed fee to each artist who participates as well as a call-to-action for audiences to donate to the artist or their cause during the performance.

In this dynamic presentation, each of the work’s ten movements and five “promenades” will be paired with projected images created by leading contemporary artists (Doug Argue, Omar Ba, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Claudia DeMonte, Juan Roberto Diago, Michele Oka Doner, Carlos Estévez, Karen LaMonte, Yassi Mazandi, Ed McGowin, Gladys Nilsson, Virgil Ortiz, Carlos Quintana, Alexis Rockman, Arthur Simms, and Agnieszka Traczewska) as well as key works from the Lowe’s permanent collection.

The evening also includes music by Aaron Copland, Julia Perry and others.

Make Music Miami, the annual celebration of music on the summer solstice, returns this year on Monday, June 21 with dozens of free, virtual and in-person outdoor concerts, music lessons, jam sessions and other exciting music-making events, spotlighting music’s power to connect, comfort, unite and uplift. Miami is among the 90+ U.S. cities hosting major celebrations, in what has become a worldwide phenomenon observed by hundreds of millions of people in over 1,000+ cities in 120 countries. Safety protocols will be in place following local requirements, including mask-wearing, social distancing and limited capacities and group sizes.
Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music Miami celebrates and promotes the natural music maker in all of us, regardless of ability. Reimagining their cities and towns as stages, every kind of musician – from bucket drummers and opera singers to hip-hop artists and marching bands – pours onto streets, parks, plazas, porches, rooftops, gardens, beaches and other public spaces to celebrate, create and share their music with friends, neighbors and strangers. Due to the pandemic, last year’s celebration was largely virtual, but many in-person events will return in 2021.

For more detailed information, visit makemusicmiami.org. Finalized programming will be posted here the week of the event.

7pm | Public Live Virtual Art Talk
8:05pm | Ambassadors Meet the Artist Virtual Reception

George Clinton was born on July 22, 1941, and is an iconic singer, songwriter, bandleader, and record producer. Recording as both Parliament and Funkadelic, Clinton revolutionized popular music during the ’70s and ’80s with an avant-garde style that continues today. His Parliament-Funkadelic collective (which primarily recorded under the distinct band names Parliament and Funkadelic) developed an influential and eclectic form of funk music during the 1970s that drew on science fiction, outlandish fashion, psychedelia, and surreal humor. For over five decades, his unparalleled sound has been cited as the DNA of Hip Hop and Urban Culture.

As a visual artist, Clinton’s body of work is as adventurous and eclectic as his music. Early on he designed the iconic Mothership spaceship for use as a centerpiece stage prop for Parliament-Funkadelic live performances. It is now on permanent display at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC.

Clinton is regarded as one of the foremost innovators of funk music. In 1977, he and Parliament-Funkadelic were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and then, in 2019, were honored with the pinnacle Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

PRESS RELEASE

EXHIBITION WELCOMES ARTISTS TO MIAMI
QR-accessible audio clips from artists provide unique opportunities and insights

Miami, FL (October 3rd, 2023) – Embellish Me, an exhibition featuring 50 extraordinary works from world- renowned Pattern & Decoration artists, opens this Saturday, October 7th, at the Frost Art Museum in Miami, Florida.
Artists attending the opening are Brad Davis, Pat Lasch, Kim MacConnel, Tony Robbin, and Ned Smyth.
This exhibition, shepherded by Bill Roth, was a dream of collector and curator Norma Canelas Roth, who passed away in April 2022. According to Norma, the P&D movement defied the acceptable trend that was “deeply entrenched in minimalism and conceptualism.” Oil, acrylic, gesso, and watercolors welcomed sequins, glitter, and feathers. Ceramics and cement, tassels and tin foil, bamboo, and beads were combined on canvas and curtains, sheets, and screens. These courageous artists were met with tremendous opposition. Their métier was being disruptors before disruptors became trendy. Nothing was forbidden. Everything was embraced.
Bill Roth insisted that the P&D artists be an integral part of the exhibition in a unique and groundbreaking way. Meredith Lucio, Tony Award-winning producer, conducted oral interviews to ensure museum visitors would have a new and ear-opening experience. Colorful QR codes will be displayed next to paintings linking museumgoers to audio clips of these intimate conversations via any smartphone. Admirers can hear about the technical aspects of the works along with humorous anecdotes about men sewing or how Roy Lichtenstein’s embracing failure ultimately brought him huge success.
###
OPEN PRESS RECEPTION/ARTIST & PRODUCER AVAILS – FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 6:30 PM When Art Worlds Collide, a reception welcoming the P&D artists, will be held at the studio of Edouard Duval- Carrié, 225 NE 57th St, Miami, at 6:30 PM.

This World Water Day, March 22, BLUE Missions partners with the City of Coral Gables to unveil a new public art installation on Giralda Plaza that will harness the power of augmented reality to raise awareness about local water issues in South Florida.

As part of a global action to advance water security, BLUE Missions chose World Water Day to raise public awareness of the potential threats to our local water supply and to show how everyone can engage in stewardship of our most precious resource through an innovative art installation that’s sure to become the next Instagram-worthy backdrop on Giralda Avenue from March 22nd through May 2024.

Brought to life by the creatives at Vaco Studio and Sunken Blimp, the installation titled, The Water Below Us, was approved by the Coral Gables City Commission as part of the city’s Art in Public Places program and will feature a hanging cylindrical “well” adorned with illustrations by Miami artist, Nic Vasquez. While visiting the art installation, onlookers will be transported into an augmented reality world where they can take pictures of themselves inside a surreal Everglades-inspired habitat. “The idea was to draw attention to the water that flows through the aquifers below our feet by displaying it over our heads. This valuable resource is often overlooked or taken for granted and we all have a role to play in protecting it so that it can continue to give life to future generations,” said Leslie Ramos, Chief Experience Officer at BLUE Missions Group.

A ribbon cutting will take place at 5:30 p.m. and officiated by the City of Coral Gables Mayor, Commissioners, and representatives from BLUE Missions. Following the ribbon-cutting, guests are invited to happy hour at Cebada Rooftop at 6:30 p.m.

WHEN:
March 22, 2024, at 5:30 p.m.

WHERE:
Giralda Plaza, 255 Giralda Ave., Coral Gables, FL
