MIAMI – March 26, 2024 – The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (@arshtcenter) is proud to present THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS written and produced by hip-hop legend Karl “Dice Raw” Jenkins (@DiceRaw), a frequent collaborator with hip-hop mega group and “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” co-stars, The Roots, as part of the Center’s Family Fun Live! Series. THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS will be presented on April 20, 2024 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and April 21, 2024 at 3 p.m. inside the Center’s intimate Carnival Studio Theater.

Tickets for THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS are $30* and may be purchased now online at arshtcenter.org, or at the Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722.

THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS takes the audience on a captivating, theatrical and hip-hop journey that explores American history through the lens of African American, Latino and Indigenous heroes during some of the country’s most pivotal times, including the American Revolutionary War, Civil War and Reconstruction.

The family-friendly show spotlights heroes such as Prince Whipple, Wentworth Cheswell, Colonel Ty Cornelius, Sojourner Truth, Bernardo de Galvez and Phillis Wheatley. Unlike other historical education that highlights the pain and suffering of African Americans, Latino and Indigenous peoples, THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHERS aims to teach the contributions of these communities to the country.

In addition to the public performances that week, the Arsht Center has arranged for Karl Jenkins and the cast to visit Miami-Dade County public high schools for a series of workshops designed to engage students in a creative exploration of history through songwriting, acting and discussions of historical relevance and philosophy. Through interactive activities and discussions, students will gain a deeper understanding of the historical context and philosophical ideas that shaped the Founding Fathers’ legacy. Student performances at the Arsht Center will take place on April 18-19.

The W Miami Afterparty will take place immediately following the screening.

Brand new to the Miami line-up this year is a Latin Spotlight night set for Saturday, April 20, at Silverspot Cinema Miami, with four films from Latin America. At 8 p.m. is the North American premiere of Blue Lights (Luces Azules)(Argentina, 2023). Directed by Lucas Santa Ana, Blue Lights is a vibrant, engaging and sophisticated dramedy that plays out during a 70th birthday celebration. Two nights of Cocktails & Cinema will celebrate our local filmmakers, cast and crews from students to seasoned veterans of the industry at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23, at Silverspot Cinema Miami. Max, a 25-year-old aspiring writer living in London, becomes a sex worker with the pseudonym Sebastian in order to research his debut novel and this secret double-life becomes a source of liberation and transformation in Sebastian (Finland/UK, 2024), this year’s Centerpiece Film. The film will be screened at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, at Silverspot Cinema Miami. Writer/director Mikko Makela’s second feature offers an intriguing exploration of sex, identity, restraint and abandon. An afterparty will take place immediately following the film.

Saturday, 04/20/2024-, 05:30 pm-09:00 pm
American Heritage Schools – Broward Campus

Plantation, Florida, 33325
Website
Cost: $20 online and $25 at the door

American Heritage Schools [ahschool.com], the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school in Florida, is proud to announce its annual “K-9 Cause: An Evening of Art” auction benefiting the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation’s Retired Canine Relief Fund, on Saturday, April 20.

Everyone loves dogs; however, police dogs, or K-9s, are a special breed. Instead of enjoying the pampered pet lifestyle, K-9s dedicate their entire lives to working daily to protect and serve citizens in our community along with their fearless handlers. They are considered law enforcement officers, whose duties include constant training, apprehending suspects, and searching for explosives, drugs, and missing persons.

When the K-9s retire, their law enforcement handlers graciously adopt them and continue to care for them, as these K-9s have become their friends for life. Recognizing that the medical and healthcare for these K-9s can get quite costly, the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation has established the Retired K-9 Healthcare Fund. This Fund pays for up to 50% of the wellness care costs for all retired K-9s from any local law enforcement agency in Broward County.

Inspired by a little boy’s passion for animals and art, American Heritage Schools is raising money to “fund this fund” by selling artistic renditions of these fine K-9s. Jackson Laurie, a sophomore at American Heritage Schools, and his parents Dr. Douglas Laurie and Nikki Laurie-Van Allen have partnered with the National Art Honor Society and the award-winning Fine Arts faculty at American Heritage to create artwork of these very K-9 being honored.

American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, will be hosting a Silent Auction for these original works of art, as well as a limited supply of prints for sale at our K-9 Cause event. 100% of all funds raised from this event will benefit the Broward Sheriff Foundation’s Retired K-9 Relief Fund.

History Fort Lauderdale presents “Visions of Women,” its first ever fine art exhibition from the National League of American Pen Women Fort Lauderdale Branch (NLAPW). This new exhibition will feature art from NLAPW award-winning artists/members Claudia Hafner, Judy Nunno, Phoenix, Donna Sallee, and Tammy Seymour from April 4 – 30.

“Visions of Women” will feature a collection of artworks joined by the theme of “empowering women” and the subjects and causes that inspire them to motivate others. According to Phoenix, president of NLAPW, the conceptual basis for this exhibition was the 100th anniversary of the formal adoption of the 19th Amendment into the U.S. Constitution. This landmark victory granted women the constitutional right to vote. For Pen Women this has extra significance. Its organization was founded in 1897 by Marian Longfellow Donoghue (niece of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) to empower professional women journalists who were discriminated against and excluded by major publications. The original intent of Pen Women founders to find “mutual aid, advice, future development” for professional women artists still resonates.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, hosts a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. It seeks to bring awareness to the community through both traveling exhibits and multiple permanent exhibits including “Women Trailblazers,” “Fort Lauderdale – the Early Years,” “The African American Experience,” “Fashion & Musical Theatre,” “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts: the story of boatbuilding along the New River,” Seminole Arts & Culture,” “New River Archaeology,” “Viva Fort Lauderdale: Celebrating Hispanic Art & Culture,” and, “Take PRIDE, a retrospective on LGBTQ life in South Florida.” The nonprofit museum also hosts an artists’ collective collaborative space.

“Visions of Women” is sponsored by the following funds at the Community Foundation of Broward: Jan and Ed Crocker Unrestricted Fund, Leo M. and Alice J. Rutten Fund and The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation Broward Community Fund. Additional funding is provided, in part, by Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward County Cultural Council, and Visit Lauderdale. This organization is also sponsored by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts & Culture.
