With all the amazing restaurants in Miami it is nice to find an exquisite foodie event that is unique. Get ready for this marvelous experience of theater, Italian food and some of the best wine in the world! Tickets are limited and will sell out, so do not wait too long to jump onboard. Toscana Divino, the premiere modern Italian restaurant and wine bar located in the heart of Mary Brickell Village, is proud to announce a unique one-of-a-kind wine dinner in celebration of ancient Florentine winemaker Antinori’s 630th Birthday! Join us in rediscovering how the Florence Renaissance influenced and shaped the world’s modern cuisine through a wine dinner theatre performance featuring Catherine de Medici!

Since 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori entered as a member of the “Arte Fiorentina”, the Winemakers’ Guild of the city of Florence, the Antinori family has been involved in the production of wine – that’s over six centuries! Thorough twenty-six generations, the family has always directly managed the Marchesi Antinori, maintaining, unaltered, a fundamental respect for tradition and for the territory in which they have operated.

Catherine de Medici will bring the Antinori Wine Dinner to life as she interacts with guests and tells her stories of how she brought modern cuisine to the world. She’s said to have taught the French how to eat with a fork, and introduced foods and dishes such as artichokes, cakes, cream puffs, custards, ices, parsley, pasta, puff pastry, quenelles, scallopine, sherbet, and truffles. This performance will be accompanied with Renaissance pieces performed by renowned classical guitarist Paul Martin. Chef Billy Devlin and Andrea Marchesin will create a sophisticated dinner with a modern take on some of the great contributions Caterina de Medici brought to the history of international cuisine. Each course was created to be a perfect complement to Antinori’s famous wines.

The Antinori Wine Dinner will be held on August 26th at 8:00 p.m. and cost $100 plus tax and gratuity. For more information, please call 305-371-2767 or visit http://www.toscanadivino.com

Photographs of the Grand Opening of OBBA Sushi in Coral Gables by Mr Q 305

It was a standing room only for the more than one hundred and fifty people who attended the opening of OBBA Sushi in Coral Gables this past Friday.

The Honorable Jim Cason, Mayor of Coral Gables presided over the cutting of the ribbon together with OBBA Sushi owners Walter Zapata and Tufic Akil. The Mayor also awarded Zapata and Akil with a Seal to City of Coral Gables based on their entrepreneurial achievements.

Once the ribbon was cut the sound of Taiko welcomed guests into the serene and well appointed dining rooms. The sushi creations coming out of the sushi bar were being consumed as soon as they were being put into the trays and the Sapporo kept flowing to the satisfaction of everyone. Definitely a great opening night!

OBBA Sushi is open and ready to make gastronomic history.

Photographs of Coral Gables Restaurant Week 2nd Annual Blogger’s Crawl by Mr Q 305

This year, the bloggers started the crawl by getting together at BULLA GASTROBAR , winner of the 2015 Taste of the Gables Award.

Bulla Gastrobar welcomed us with a choice of white or red Sangrias both of which were full of fruit flavor, talk about the perfect refreshment on a hot Florida June afternoon.

Then the tasting began…

Our sampling menu consisted of:

Salpicón de Mariscos: Grilled octopus, jumbo lump crab meat, shrimp, bell peppers, fresh lemon, oregano and olive oil. This combination of seafood flavors was simply amazing!

Huevos Bulla: Homemade potato chips, Serrano ham and potato foam drizzled with truffle oil. These eggs were just the perfect appetizer.

Bulla Sliders: Homemade garlic herb bread, beef, pork, veal, oyster mushroom patties, piquillo peppers, caramelized onions, crimini port reduction, tetilla cheese, and Portobello fries. This is actually a James Beard Foundation Burger and winner of The Taste of the Gables Award…need we say more?

By this time we were all excited and ready to continue.

Next stop on the list: BRICKTOPS right across the street.

Field Greens Salad: Mixed baby greens, tomatoes, carrots, onions, mushrooms and focaccia croutons with a homemade house vinaigrette.

Hearts of Romaine Caesar: Hearts of Romaine lettuce with grated parmesan and focaccia croutons with homemade Caesar dressing.

The Wedge Salad: Bib lettuce, thick cut bacon, red onion and blue cheese.

Parmesan Crusted Chicken: Pan sautéed chicken, chopped tomato, capers and lemon beurre blanc

Scottish Salmon: Salmon lightly seasoned and simply grilled. So simple and yet so good!

Prime Sirloin Meat Loaf : Meat loaf made from prime sirloin and topped with a chili sauce glaze. Quite possibly the best meat loaf we’ve ever tasted.

Baby Back Ribs: Danish Baby Back Ribs topped with chipotle barbecue sauce. The ten hour slow cooked process is evident in the meat fall off the bone/melt in your mouth texture.

OBBA SUSHI was our next destination.

They served a wonderful sushi sampler consisting of:

Crispy Canapés: Crispy rice with steamed shrimp, cilantro, scallions, sun-dried tomatoes, spicy mayo and Yuzu Oil dressing.

Yellowtail Guacamole Tartar: Yellowtail, masago, avocado, shizo, sesame, sriracha, micro greens, cucumber and ginger Yuzu.

Obba Sandwich: Shrimp tempura, spicy crab salad, avocado and chives with spicy katzu mayo.

Banana Tempura: Batter fried banana.
Then it was on to BOOKS & BOOKS CAFE where they treated us to a delicious

Shrimp Avocado Tartine: Fresh shrimp, avocado, tomato, basil pesto, garlic aioli on grilled Ciabatta. We washed down with a great-bodied Uintaite BaBa Black Lager.

Our last stop was LA TABERNA GIRALDA, a quaint Spanish style tavern. The offerings:

Croquetas Cabrales: Cabrales cheese croquettes.

Chips de Berenjenas y Miel: Eggplant Chips sprinkled with honey.

Perfecto de Solomillo de Cerdo: Roasted pork tenderloin with caramelized onion and aroma of rosemary.

It was a perfect ending to a perfect evening.

Don’t forget that Coral Gables Restaurant Week ends June 28th so you better hurry and try to capitalize on all the wonderful tastes that the City Beautiful has to offer.

The standing room only crowd could not wait to sample the best that the restaurants in the Gables have to offer. Each restaurant competing for the distinction of being declared winner of the 2015 Taste of the Gables.

From Ceviche to Oxtail, there was a dish for every palate; each dish meticulously and impeccably prepared but there could only be one winner…

…and this year ‘s winner is Bulla!

Congratulations!!!

Taste of the Gables kicks off Restaurant Week. For three weeks, restaurants will offer special three-course lunch and dinner prix-fixe menus at a discounted price.

Nina Compton / Compère Lapin

Prior to filming Top Chef: New Orleans, Nina Compton, the Saint Lucia native and former Chef de Cuisine of Scarpetta had never been (but always wanted to go) to NOLA. While her original honeymoon plan to visit the French Quarter fell through, a different kind of passion landed her as runner up on Top Chef Season 11 and in the city she’d always yearned for. Obviously the rest is history as it’s no secret that Compton packed her knives in February in search of a Creole cooking future, which brings us to her new venture and little unknown secret: Compère Lapin.

We’ve got an exclusive on what she’ll be serving at her frst solo endeavor at the new Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery, and we’ve got an exclusive on what she’ll be serving up. Conch Croquettes with pickled pineapple tartar sauce, Orecchiette with pork cheeks and arugula and Banana Zeppoles with salted rum caramel. As well as her final ode to Miami: Her pasta dumpling recipe from the queen of gnocchi herself.

Mash 5 potatoes. Add 3 egg yolks. Season with a pinch full of salt and a hand full of flour. Work the dough but not too much. It just should come together and feel soft and not breaking apart. And work it while its hot so it doesn’t get gummy. Roll it out, chop it up and cook it right away.

We’re gonna go ahead and safely say an iteration will find its way onto Compère Lapin’s menu, so should you not want to make it at home there’s always road tripping to New Orleans for a taste of the real thing.

If you are down for heritage farming and roller-coasters of flavor; if you’re excited by a culinary competition; or if you just love to eat pork, clear your weekend calendar. Cochon 555, the country’s most talked about culinary competition arrives in Miami with an epic 3-day feast showcasing the best bites, chefs and who’s who of the good food movement. The goal, to celebrate family farms, heritage breed pigs and tilt the scales to favor today’s emerging chef community struggling to pay premium prices for safer, more flavorful food raised by real farmers.

One-of-a-kind dining experiences Friday and Saturday lead up to the main event, Cochon 555, on Sunday at Loews Miami Beach Hotel – the Official Host of the weekend. The events are part of a national culinary competition that showcases notable chefs, barrier-breaking women, artist-like butchers, spirited bartenders, top winemakers, brewers, distillers, alongside decadent oysters, caviar and sweets. Here is your chance to get in on the action.

Sunday, April 19, is the main event, Cochon 555, which features five chefs cooking five pigs in a friendly competition. This year’s competing chefs include Lindsay Autry of Fin & Feather, Xavier Torres of Drunken Dragon, Todd Erickson of Haven South Beach, Jason Pringle of db Bistro Moderne and Richard Hales of Blackbrick. The five chefs, champions of whole hog utilization, will prepare a maximum of six dishes with hopes to win votes from a crowd of hungry gourmands and celebrated judges. They will be preparing heritage breed pigs raised on local farms including South Florida Heritage Farm, FKS Farms, Maverick Meats, Palmetto Creek Farms and The Florida Fresh Meat Company.

The weekend kicks-off on Friday, April 17, with the Chef’s Course Dinner hosted at Pubbelly and paired with the amazing Wines of Germany. 2014 Miami “Prince of Porc”, Chef Jose Mendin welcomes guest chefs, Aaron Brooks, Cesar Zapata, Danny Smiles and Timon Balloo and COCHON 555 founder, Brady Lowe for a seated five-course dinner. The three-hour culinary experience includes thoughtful chef introductions of each course ($125 all inclusive) as they work together to prepare this special, one-night-only epicurean feast, emphasizing high-quality, local ingredients and responsible agriculture.

Saturday, April 18 spotlights Cochon 555’s “Large Format Feast,” ($110 all-inclusive) a four-course meat feast hosted at L’echon Brasserie with Chef Jose Mendin. The preview dinner, featuring St. Francis Wines and Hirsch & Old Potrero, will celebrate family-raised beef and Duroc pork from Creekstone Farms. This epic “Big Beef vs. Heritage Pig” dinner series features notable chefs who are reinventing the traditional steakhouse experience to spotlight the growing popularity of heritage pork on steakhouse menus, ultimately setting course for a safer food system.

Going on its seventh year, Cochon 555 is regarded as the nation’s most flavorful culinary tour. This year’s judges, led by Miami’s 2014 Prince of Porc, Jose Mendin, and including Aaron Brooks of Edge Steakhouse, Daniel Serfer of Mignonette, Bradley Herron of Michael’s Genuine and Norman Van Aken of Norman’s will help select Miami’s “Prince or Princess of Porc.” The winner goes on to compete for the title of “King or Queen of Porc” at the tour finale, Grand Cochon at Snowmass/Aspen in June. The grand champion will be rewarded with a 4-day wine experience in Rioja, Spain’s most prominent wine region. And, new in 2015, the winner’s kitchen countertops will be resurfaced with Wilsonart® Quartz decorative surfacing, a remarkable, beautifully engineered stone material from America’s countertop leader.

The Miami version of this fairy-tale heritage pork event includes more than 36 chef-prepared dishes in an all-inclusive stand up reception with notable tastings from Wines of Germany, St. Francis Winery and Whistle Pig Rye. Cochon’s “pop-up” culinary experiences include the Petit Format Bar presented by Wilsonart® Quartz decorative surfacing, the Mezcal Chupito Bar, The Artisan Cheese Bar with The Cheese Course and the famous TarTare Bar featuring Creekstone Farms prepared by Chef Jose Mendin of Pubbelly. This notable group of local and national sponsors will be hosting exceptional experiences from Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Breckenridge Bourbon, Hirsch, Luxardo, Rappahannock Oyster Shelf, Prosciutto di Parma, Black River Caviar, Hudson Valley Foie Gras, Creminelli and La Brea Bakery.

We are proud to announce the return of the Pop-Up Butcher Shop with the support of Williams-Sonoma – a live butchering demonstration with Andres Barrientos of Miami Smokers, raising money for the supporting culinary students from Johnson & Wales.

Both ticket levels include endless food and drink options. Specifically, general admission offers over 36 dishes prepared from nose to tail, paired with wines, brews and spirits. VIP grants one hour early access to food, drink and an opportunity to mingle with notable chefs, judges and media.

“I’m excited about all the new partners in 2015 who support family farming, independent business and heritage breed pigs. Each event aims to lessen the burden on the small farmers to hold surplus inventory and streamline the sales process. This year we continue to expand with a guest chef and winemaker dinner series over the course of each weekend, a revamped welcome reception, and a flavorful lineup of experiences that support a more natural, sustainable food system,” explains Brady Lowe, founder of Cochon 555. “Together, with some of the best chefs and partners in Miami, we amplify the conversation of heritage pork, which for many is a ‘gateway meat’ to a larger appreciation of where our food comes from and the people that raise it, leading to more mindful eating.”

Fans of this epic culinary competition can satisfy their hunger in other ways by getting in on the action and entering any of the live Cochon contests. Visit cochon555.com/win/ and sign up to win your chance at a Cochon monumental experience, which includes unforgettable trips and extravagant prizes that are worth more than $25,000. Lucky winners will be rewarded with prizes that include an epic trip to the Rioja Wine and Tapas festival in Chicago on May 2, a newly resurfaced dream kitchen sponsored by Williams-Sonoma, Wilsonart, Shun, Chefs Feed & Food Republic and a four-day trip to Mexico. The Mexican getaway, presented by Mezcales de Leyenda, Simmer, Panna Cooking and Cochon 555, asks contest participants to share their favorite Mezcal recipe using the Simmer App on their iPhone. It’s time for Cochon fans to get treated! Don’t miss out on these unforgettable opportunities and sign up today.

Guests can upgrade their ticket online by pre-ordering a copy of EPIC PORC – The Cochon 555 cookbook to be released in fall 2015. All Ticket buyers receive a free year-long PANNA subscription at a $24.95 value. Everyone is invited to visit the new website and signup for the newsletter to be the first to get chef announcements and a chance to win prizes from our sponsors. Street Festival Brings The Best of Wynwood to Life!

Wynwood Life is back and packed with everything that Miami loves. The colorful, annual event is all about art, music, fashion and food. This year’s new location will feature more artists, fashion shows, art displays, musical bands, interactive features and a new collaborative cooking showcase that will highlight popular Wynwood restaurants and chefs.

A wide selection of featured artists will be organized by world renowned painter Alexander Mijares, who will also design the festival’s 2015 collective poster. For the first time ever, Mijares will have a pop-up gallery showcasing his unique style of art, which finds inspiration in the colorful energy of both this city and heritage. “It’s unusual to have an artist of his caliber showcasing at a festival. Wynwood Life is a great place to see him in action, and while you’re there, be sure to pick up an original work of art,” said Javi Zayas, co-founder of SWARM, the organizer behind the festival.

The Peroni Style Lounge will once again feature fashionistas at their pop-up boutique, and during the event, it will showcase multiple fashion shows with local boutiques, fashion bloggers and stylists.

It wouldn’t be Wynwood without Food Trucks, so the festival will have the biggest food truck rally ever with over 50 favorites and a number of food vendors ready to please all taste buds. In addition, the event has partnered with Wynwood neighbor, Miami Club Rum. Several bars will be equipped with the hand-crafted rum made in Miami’s first distillery by artisans with a family history of rum production that dates back five generations. Beer lovers rejoice! The Blue Moon Brew Pub will be back with a fully stocked selection of cold brews and mixed drinks. New this year is the Wynwood Culinary Showcase, which will feature top restaurants and chefs from the area showcasing their cuisine. Wynwood Life is sponsored by Miami Club Rum

This year’s musical line-up is bigger and better, featuring many local favorites including Problem Kidz, Spam Allstar, Suenalo, The Tremends, Danger Flow and Elastic Bond to name a few. For a complete schedule of performances, click on Live Music at www.WynwoodLife.com.

Fabio Viviani / Siena Tavern Miami

Last Fall, Chicago’s popular Siena Tavern opened its doors on Miami Beach in the iconic China Grill building. At the helm of the restaurant is the ever-charming Top Chef alum Fabio Viviani, who sat down with Chat Chow TV to talk all about Siena Tavern Miami location and its menu.

Viviani has been working in kitchens since he was 11 years old in his native Italy. By the time he was 28 he was the owner of five different restaurants when he decided to sell them all and come to America. Since then he has opened several successful restaurants throughout the country and has become a well-recognized and well-liked chef.

When Viviani and his partners decided bring the Siena Tavern concept to Miami, the restaurant team partnered up with local vendors like Bar Lab and Wynwood Brewing to help create the bar program. As for the menu, Viviani tells Chat Chow that he enlists his friends, family and co-workers to help narrow down the menu from 300 dishes to 35 “cravers.”

As for what deems a dish as a “craver” he notes, “we like to have the ‘wow’ kind of dishes, because if I can’t get the reaction where you want to come back for more there is some more work to do on it.”

Some of the most popular “cravers” on the menu are the house-made pastas, octopus, pizza and a meatball that’s so beloved it has it’s own Twitter account.

Curious how Viviani feels about taking over the legendary space? Or why dining is different in Miami versus Chicago? Find out those things and more in the video above.

About Sheila Fraga
One of the most important reasons of my artist work is the need to reflect my feelings like a Cuban woman and experiences with a chronological- spiritual character about my past, present and future. In this scenery I show reconciliation, nostalgias, religion beliefs, memories, like pieces that are assembled within a puzzle. I create many compositions, recreated in family pictures, appropriations of passages of the Art History that are uncontextualized to the reality. I deal with identity and migration themes to represent my today’s conflicts. Sometimes I use humor and sadness images like a “Cuban Ajiaco”. I take the oil paintings, charcoal drawing, collage, mixed media and the Cutout. In this long road appear answers to questions such as: What I am looking at, where I am now and how can I get to achieve it? My work is an autobiographic reflection of my life.

About Litana
Litana is a self taught artist. She currently resides in Miami. She mainly creates in oils but likes to explore other mediums. She has participated in collaborations with other artists and in group exhibitions. She creates to inspire the imagination.

About Vivian Estalella
Cuban-American artist Vivian Estalella was born and raised in Miami, Florida in a family of strong independent women. As a little girl, she never played with dolls or toys. Instead, she preferred to spend her time coloring. She was always happier with a box of crayons or paints than a Barbie doll. Always creative, she enjoyed the arts from a very young age. At the age of 15, a trip to Mexico awakened her passion for painting. The intensely rich colors of Mexican art struck a cord and, together with her Cuban roots, formed a style that is both distinctive and uniquely vibrant. The sights, sounds, exotic tastes, and passionate people of the tropics, along with the sensuous female form, are all prevalent in her work.
Vivian’s collection has been displayed at several art shows and fairs. She was also a resident artist at Viernes Culturales, Miami’s monthly art fair in historic Little Havana for several years. Today, her work can be seen in private collections and exhibited at seasonal art shows. At every opportunity, Vivian gives back to the community. Several pieces have been donated to auctions benefiting various local charities.

About DJ Hank Justice
DJ/Writer/Editor from Miami that is fighting musical injustice one beat at a time. In 2012, Hank reunited with one of his long-lost loves: Music. He was always the kid that turned to music. It was always deeply embedded in him since birth. While he was in high school and college, he always found himself at parties wishing he could be in control of the music. He wasn’t interested in partying; he was interested in orchestrating them. Hank’s mission is to destroy musical injustice in the form of DJ sets chock-full of music that people can enjoy and move to. He is often asked what he is playing and is often told that his selection is unique and excellent. This is because he spends hours each day carefully digging for gems anywhere he can. He loves sharing these sounds with the world and hopes to be able to do so more often and for more people. It’s a musical story that’s forever under construction.

Steve Santana / Taquiza

Taquiza has become the go-to spot for authentic tacos and late night eats on Miami Beach. Started by Eating House and Freehand Miami alum Steve Santana, it serves up tacos on house-made masa that has everyone buzzing. Chat Chow TV sat down with Santana to find out more about them and the concept behind them.

The fast casual restaurant, located on the first floor of the Eva Hotel, is a no-frills taqueria serving up seven different types of tacos to a standing-room only crowd. Santana emphasizes that everything in Taquiza is homemade right down to its masa corn tortillas, which uses corn grown in small heirloom farms sourced by Masienda. Other popular menu items include the guacamole with hand torn chips, dry rubbed beef jerky, and its take on the popular ice cream treat the choco taco.

But Santana hasn’t always been a chef — he actually began his career doing digital work, but always had a passion for food. After helping coordinate one of the first-ever Cobaya dinners, he met chef Jeremiah Bullfrog and began assisting him on his food truck. His passion grew from there and before long he left the digital world and became a chef full time.

Curious how Santana learned how to master the masa tortilla? Or what tacos are his favorite on the menu? Find out all that and more in video above.

SOBEWFF Amstel Light Burger Bash 2015

Friday night, a friend and I had the chance to attend the SOBEWFF Amstel Light Burger Bash. Of course, being allergic to sub-par beer, we decided to check out the newest brewery in Wynwood, J Wakefield Brewing for some pre-gaming. Seriously, check that place out!

And while J Wakefield had what looked to be a pretty awesome food truck outside, what it didn’t have was a Ritz-Carlton beach full of awesome chefs preparing gourmet burgers! Oh, or the hot chicks, spectacular band, celebrities (yeah, I got my picture taken with Al Roker and Morimoto!), and thousands of people.

Honestly, you can see who won here. I was a little disappointed with the star power that I and other people love to meet (though not burger quality) compared to when I went in 2013. That year, Morimoto was there but was joined by Bobby Flay, Guy Fieri, Scott Conant, Michael Symon, Geoffrey Zakarian, Andrew, Zimmern, Anne Burrell, The Sandwich King, and more.

My favorite and the one I cast my vote for was Prime One Twelve (Prime 112). That burger was so juicy and cheesy and delicious! I also enjoyed Red Robin’s burger and Shake Shack too among a handful of others.

Anyway, here are some pictures! I hope to go again next year!

Eats & Beats 2015

Eats N Beats 2015 30

After an unplanned tour of Little Haiti in Miami last night, my wife and I gave in to technology and plugged in the address of The Moore Building in Miami’s Design District into the phone. After all, we didn’t want to be late to the second annual Eats & Beats culinary and musical event taking place from 7:30 until midnight!

Whew! Just made it on time, and someone was nice enough to leave a parking space right in front of the building for us. We met the organizers on the way in and then got started tasting some great dishes, sampling some terrific spirits and cocktails, and being entertained with some great music and ambiance.

The pink lights flashing on the very unique architecture of The Moore Building made me feel like I was back at a club in Paris I visited a few times in the 90’s. Eats & Beats took place on all 4 floors, which each have a 360 degree balcony overlooking the center of the building. Pretty cool!

Eats N Beats 2015 8

We met some very nice people, both vendors and other guests alike. If I were forced to pick some favorites, I’d have to choose Chef Adrianne Calvo (who also made a spectacular dessert at the Five Cubed event a few days ago), the food from Segundo Muelle Peruvian Restaurant, Red The Steakhouse, Brother Jimmy’s, and Havana 1957. Oh, and the cupcakes from Ana Paz Cakes and Slice of Art!

And on the spirits side of things, I loved the Zafra rum, both on the rocks and as a cocktail. Not to be outdone were the terrific mojitos that the folks from Nikki Beach were making. Not only did both of those vendors make a great tasting drink, but they went all out with their presentation and overall experience.

Eats N Beats 2015 35

IT Espresso Lounge also made a very nice prosecco based drink, quite refreshing. And as the “beer guy,” I have to give a shout out to the only beer vendor there–Modelo! I personally would have like to have seen a few more strong brands, especially considering the emergence of craft beer on the Miami scene. But hey, that’s probably just me.

All the vendors were friendly, knowledgeable, and wanted to share their products with you. And to the army of people that made the event happen, congratulations! Can’t wait for Eats & Beats 2016!

On the opening night of SBWFF, Thursday, February 19th, while the town fresh and excited, we are throwing an incredible social dinner and cocktail event starring Top Chef All Stars Mike Isabella and The Social Club Executive Chef Blair Wilson. They will personally be cooking The Social Club Mediterranean Feast, with whole lambs on spits, a decadent array of local seafood, and traditional Mediterranean side dishes galore. Served buffet style with active food stations, the beachside Pasture space behind the pool will be fire-lit, with great music and endless cocktails.

What is great about the event is that there are very few great events outside the SBWFF official schedule. We wanted to bring Mike in, who is food Tom Colicchio famously said is as good as any chef in the world, team him up with the uber-talented Chef Blair, and create something decadent, unforgettable and appealing to, say, fans of Mandolin’s style of healthy, clean Mediterranean cooking. Throwing our own event is allowing us to reduce prices and create a model for many events in 2016.

Reyka Vodka Visits Miami

1-Trevor-Schneider-New-York-Cocktail-Ninja-Reyka-Vodka-Ambassador-2

If there is one thing Miami is doing well, it’s cocktails. Handcrafted cocktail hotspots like the Broken Shaker and Bodega prove that our cocktail scene is innovative and ahead of the curve. Plus, our local mixologists are respected and recognizable figures in the national hospitality circles. Would you expect any less from a top-tier nightlife destination like Miami?

Reyka Vodka brand ambassador, Trevor Schneider, can vouch for Miami’s cocktail credibility. When New York’s very own “cocktail ninja” arrived to our beautiful city last Saturday, he was excited to see that Miami is bringing our mixology A-game. The Broken Shaker, he says, is the prime example of how high Miami is setting the bar. That said, it comes as no surprise that he selected The Broken Shaker as the backdrop for re-introducing Reyka Vodka to the Miami community.

Earlier this week, Trevor invited local influencers to the Freehand Miami for a tasting of classic cocktails reinvented with Reyka Vodka. The menu featured three signature cocktails bound to take Miami by storm: the Reyka Cooler, the Harvest Collins, and the Icelandic Paloma. We loved all three, especially because each one had a distinct claim-to-fame. For example, the Harvest Collins had strawberry-infused vodka that made it dangerously delicious.

The free-flowing drinks, the gorgeous weather, and Trevor’s charisma were all contributing factors to a good time. 27 Restaurant and Bar sealed the deal by furnishing exquisite hors d’oeuvres that, to no one’s surprise, impressed everyone present. Overall the night was an incredible success. We speak for everyone when we say that you’re welcome back any time Reyka Vodka!

Fairchild’s 9th Annual Chocolate Festival Feeds Miami’s Mind and Soul

Fairchild-Tropical-Botanic-Garden-Ninth-Annual-Chocolate-Festival-1

This weekend Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden lured us to Coral Gables with chocolate – their 9th Annual Chocolate Festival to be exact. Despite the overcast skies, the Garden came alive with live music, international eats, educational programming, and more chocolate than the eye could see. The two-day festival gave Miami families the perfect excuse to enjoy the beautiful grounds, indulge in chocolate delicacies, and learn about the cacao plant. During our visit, we did all these and more. Check out our five favorite moments from this year’s event:

1. Sampling a hot chocolate recipe from the 1750s. American Heritage, an authentic historic line of products from leading food manufacturer Mars, had a tent where we learned how hot chocolate was made from scratch in the 1750s and had the opportunity to sample the recipe. The demonstration included actual recreations of the ingredients and kitchen tools used back then, like the spices and chunk of sugar (wrapped in blue paper) shown below. Did you know that in the 1700s that amount of sugar would last one family approximately 6 months?

Fairchild-Tropical-Botanic-Garden-Ninth-Annual-Chocolate-Festival-2

2. Learning about the history of cacao. “The Living History of Cacao and Chocolate” tent, which held presentations every hour on the chronology of cacao from ancient seed to modern candy bar, was the most notable addition to this year’s program. Our timing was off so we missed most of the speakers, but the friendly volunteers at the tent gave us a delicious consolation prize: a banana chocolate smoothie sample!

Fairchild-Tropical-Botanic-Garden-Ninth-Annual-Chocolate-Festival-3

3. Exploring the greenhouse. We headed to the greenhouse with the mission of finding and witnessing Fairchild’s cacao tree first-hand. However, the lush vegetation and water features kept us in there for a good hour as we explored the many natural wonders the greenhouse had to offer.

Fairchild-Tropical-Botanic-Garden-Ninth-Annual-Chocolate-Festival-4

4. Discovering the Wings of the Tropics exhibition. As we concluded our stroll in the greenhouse, we spotted the conservatory that houses Fairchild’s colorful butterflies and we knew we had to go inside. The exhibition was well-worth the detour – the butterflies were awe-inspiring despite the limited sunshine. Did you know that butterflies are more active on sunny days? They rely on the sun to raise their body temperatures so they can fly.

Fairchild-Tropical-Botanic-Garden-Ninth-Annual-Chocolate-Festival-5

5. Enjoying the festival ambiance. Once we had our fill of chocolate, we grabbed a roasted corn on the cob and sat down on the grass to enjoy the harmonious sounds of Solar Dogs, a Coconut Grove-based string band that was our favorite part of last year’s chocolate festival. Sitting there, watching families spending time together, couples dancing, and savoring our delicious corn, we were in absolute festival bliss. Fairchild, you really know how to make us happy!
