Showcasing provocative art around the unspoken

Art + Performance + Outreach

JULY 18, 2015 | 7-11pm

The organizers, Niki Lopez and Alana DaCosta, of The Elephant Exhibition invites you attend the opening reception at 1310 Gallery which is located at 1310 SW 2nd Ct. (Middle St.), Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312 on July 18, 2013.

The Elephant Exhibition is a group arts exhibition featuring work that challenges both artist and viewer to consider their choices about what in our lives, should be revealed and what should be hidden. We want the elephant out in the open so we can find release…

“The Elephant” as in ‘the elephant in the room’ is metaphorical idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored or going unaddressed. The idiomatic expression also applies to an obvious problem or risk no one wants to discuss, It is based on the idea that an elephant in a room would be impossible to overlook; thus, people in the room who pretend the elephant is not there have chosen to avoid dealing with the looming big issue.

Visual Artists include: Niki Lopez; Alana DaCosta; Allison Kotzig; Rolando Chang Barrero, Judy Leeson Polstra, Sonia Baez-Hernandez, Dianne Rosenberg; Ian Barnes, Susan Buzzi, Rene Gordon and others come together in a visual dialogue to revel their The Elephant.

Opening night will be hosted by Spoken word artist Chunky with performances by Chaos Theory, Dawn Robinson , 2015 Dada National Slam Team, Tico Armand, Yoli Mayor & others.

The face in the foreground of one of his current series, accuses changes since the beginning of the first decade. Face emerges from the back of the fabric to penetrate the viewer’s personal life, saying you are like me, while the individualist sentiment appears exaggerated in his own connections to feelings and emotions.

Join us for his exhibition in the Artisan Lounge in Gallery 1 and 3. Free admission.

We’re celebrating 4 years of being active in the Miami arts and culture scene with an event that brings together all the elements we love in our city: Art, Music, Beer and Food.

While there are many private collections focusing on Latin American, Caribbean, and other cultural art movements in the region, none specifically focus on artists who have made Miami their home. As Yo Miami’s four year anniversary approaches, it will unveil its biggest project to date: the Yo Miami Permanent Collection, aimed at rectifying this lapse.

“What Remains” the first exhibition for the collection is indicative of its mission to document the evolution of the Miami art scene in an effort to expose the immense talent that has grown out of South Florida. The exhibition will be the first of many initiatives focused on preserving our city’s artistic legacy and sharing it with residents and visitors alike.

About The Leah Arts District
Hialeah’s Southeastern industrial corridor rose to prominence during the 1980s as one of the largest and busiest areas of production and manufacturing in Florida. As a result of modernization combined with the effects of outsourcing, the uses that were once prevalent in the area dissipated and this particular area was all but abandoned. Since that time, a medley of different uses has been incorporated into the area including a heavy presence of some of Miami-Dade County’s most prolific thrift stores. These thrift stores have been instrumental in introducing Hialeah to an entire generation of antique lovers and artists.

The Hialeah Artist Live/Work Overlay District, also known as The Leah Arts District, enjoys a strategic proximity to the newly proposed Hialeah Market Station development project, Miami’s artistic hubs, and other destination areas within Miami-Dade County. Because of it’s location and highly affordable price per square footage, Hialeah’s new Artist Live / Work District is in a position to play a vital and important role in the artistic and cultural development of not only Hialeah, but the entire South Florida community. Follow @leahartsdistrict on Instagram for updates.

The Beauty and The Streets pop-up exhibit at the Shelborne Wyndham Grand Hotel (1801 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL) will showcase a rare and interactive view of NY Street Artist Nobody’s conversation about female sensuality, sexuality and beauty in the streets seen through the eyes of Nobody. The exclusive cocktail reception will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Signature drinks will be served by Toast Vodka. Street art has become a global culture and street artist Nobody continues to create poignant socio-political observations and commentaries on the people and events of contemporary society. Each of his creations is a spontaneous, yet cerebral mix of symbols, words, and figures used as devices to leave subtle clues for the viewer to interpret or reinterpret.

“I am the defiant thread in this great tapestry of life, who has decided to weave instead of being woven, and boldly proclaim myself an artist. My rebellious markers and aerosol cans do not need, nor seek your permission as I converse with generations yet unborn,” says Nobody. “To you I may be a nobody. Then undeterred and unaffected I say to you, ‘Nobody did it!’ as I leave my mark on the world.”

The artist also has a great love for children, and uses not only his art but also his heart, volunteering his time to Miami non-profits in hopes that children will see the beauty within themselves. On any given day, you will see him whizzing down the streets on his skateboard, on his way to conduct an art workshop for a community youth program.

TMNK says there is beauty in the streets, and he’s on a mission to make sure everyone sees and values this obscure beauty.

How do you know if the platforms you use are where your potential new buyers are? How do you know if the kind of posts you make are appealing to potentially new buyers and fans? This seminar will help you save time and sell more art. As you focus your social media promotional efforts to those that really bring in new buyers and fans, you will see a greater return on your investment. Yes, we will be talking real numbers, how you can find those numbers, and how to understand them.

Pinecrest Gardens is the home of a wonderful display of flowers, trees, rock formations and gardens.  In the Garden, there is a large Banyan Tree that is the heart of the Park.  Having grown up in South Miami, Parrot Jungle was one of my favorite parks and remember being able to play among the roots of then a young Banyan.  It is an honor to be able to reflect the beauty of this park through my paintings.

Banyans are considered sacred and it is amazing how these ancient trees are figured so prominently in many cultures. They have used these massive trees as homes and small communities. Even the leaves are considered the resting place of Krishna.

Banyans have a wonderful way of catching the light and there is so much movement of the roots.  They are all so connected it is reminiscent the way life is so connected and intertwined.

All the paintings in this exhibit are specific to Pinecrest Gardens highlighting the Banyan Tree.  Also included are some solution holes, (one 30,000 years old) exotic and tropical plants, flowers and some animals.

Please come to see the park through my eyes in these paintings.

With a magnificent and colorful spectacle the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida closes its seventeenth season. Its traditional Spring Gala will include the return of Vladimir Issaev’s exciting neo-classical ballet Shostakovich Suites and Vicente Nebrada’s sensous work, Pentimento. The Spring Gala is part of the Broward County Centennial Celebration.

Shostakovich Suites is an exhilarating choreographic piece by Vladimir Issaev, inspired by the music of this Russian composer who was a revolutionary in contemporary composition while suffering the brutal despotism toward talented artists during Stalin’s era. The piece brings all the excitement of the neo-classical dance combined with the extraordinary skills of the Issaev’s dancers at Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida.

Pentimento, created by renowned choreographer Vicente Nebrada, includes excerpts from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Four Suites for Orchestra. Pentimento, a pivotal piece of his repertoire, is a bold, abstract work that is based on the art form of painting of the same name. The artist changes his mind about the composition of his painting during the process, and then changes it. This approach is also applied to ballet: the dance and costumes change throughout the performance. Using masks, floating fabrics and dense lighting, the piece is developed with the presentation of different characters who dance and show the genius of Nebrada. Adding to mystical effects is original costuming by Cristina Gianinni.

These pieces will be performed by the professional dancers of the company where principals Hirofumi Ikeuchi, Lillian Hill, Ramil Bagmanov, Takayuki Asai and Aya Baba have the responsibilities of the main roles. The program showcases the extraordinary skills of Vladimir Issaev’s dancers.

Visitors will have the opportunity to have an intimate look inside the artist’s studio and learn more about her new works.

In her studio, Fache will have some of her recent works in exhibition. Among them, “Untitled” an acrylic big scale painting and a new installation.

Carla Fache is a chilean born Miami-based visual artist who explores the frontiers of color, space, balance and matter, through her paintings and installations.

Her work unfolds the juncture of parallel scenarios that occur simultaneously to quotidian realities, providing dimensions of escape against the society status quo, leverage a reconnection through her canvas portals.

Color is essential in Fache’s work; she explores its infinite combinations, re- contextualizing the concept of coexistence, color, time and universality; a return to the essential.

Her work employs a variety of materials including traditional canvas, but also introducing unusual artifacts, expanding outside of the two-dimensional plane of the canvas and into the surrounding environment.

“Opening the doors of my studio is like opening the door of color to my canvas’s mental space”, explains Fache.

This is a unique opportunity to see inside the studios of some of Miami’s most talented artists. Nearly 40 artists will have their studios open. You can meet with the artists and talk about their work or simply browse through the studios. Please feel free to invite friends. With artists working in every medium, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Blueshift Wynwood is pleased to announce Andrew Levitas: Metalwork Playground, the artist’s first solo exhibition in Miami. Levitas, known for his meticulously handcrafted photo-sculptures developed through his patented/trademarked process Metalwork Photography®, has produced a new body of work consisting of recreational playground equipment.
Driven by the desire to express his inner vision in a highly personalized medium, Levitas encourages dialogue on the most pressing concerns of our times: dramatic shifts in America’s political and economic strength, technology and our quest for simplicity, and the rapid depletion of wilderness. Levitas creates an inviting experience through the lens of easily recognized forms (seesaws, swing sets, and merry-go-rounds) and the most cherished and happiest of experiences – childhood playtime that can also translate to adult environments. To further complicate this discussion, the sculptures are crafted following the strictest of design principles in gleaming polished chrome. Their sleekness hints at our need for perfection, immediacy, and our impatience in finding lasting resolutions.
Levitas, who is also a filmmaker and writer, began his fine art practice as a painter and photographer. Finding the medium of photography personally limiting, he developed Metalwork Photography®, a process involving the transfer of photographs onto custom transparencies that are in turn melted onto hand etched metal sheets creating a highly reflective surface. Levitas’s installations take this technique one-step further and are comprised of multi- paneled interlocking metal sheets. Built to scale, the playground equipment sculptures, just like his photographs, can be displayed indoors or outdoors and are completely functional art objects.
Born in New York City, Levitas received his BA from NYU where he currently teaches courses on the creative process. In 2008, the artist was accepted to the prestigious Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, which concluded with an exhibition at the Louvre. In addition to a growing list of American and international exhibitions, his work has garnered attention through top auction houses, museums, and art fairs. Recent highlights include the first ever solo exhibition at Phillips Berkeley Square, London. Levitas also recently wrote and directed the feature film Lullaby staring Garrett Hedlund, Academy Award Nominees Amy Adams, Richard Jenkins, Terrence Howard, Anne Archer, and Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson. Levitas maintains studios in London, New York and Los Angeles and continues to expand on ideas of engagement and creative expression.

Street Festival Brings The Best of Wynwood to Life!

Wynwood Life is back and packed with everything that Miami loves. The colorful, annual event is all about art, music, fashion and food. This year’s new location will feature more artists, fashion shows, art displays, musical bands, interactive features and a new collaborative cooking showcase that will highlight popular Wynwood restaurants and chefs.

A wide selection of featured artists will be organized by world renowned painter Alexander Mijares, who will also design the festival’s 2015 collective poster. For the first time ever, Mijares will have a pop-up gallery showcasing his unique style of art, which finds inspiration in the colorful energy of both this city and heritage. “It’s unusual to have an artist of his caliber showcasing at a festival. Wynwood Life is a great place to see him in action, and while you’re there, be sure to pick up an original work of art,” said Javi Zayas, co-founder of SWARM, the organizer behind the festival.

The Peroni Style Lounge will once again feature fashionistas at their pop-up boutique, and during the event, it will showcase multiple fashion shows with local boutiques, fashion bloggers and stylists.

It wouldn’t be Wynwood without Food Trucks, so the festival will have the biggest food truck rally ever with over 50 favorites and a number of food vendors ready to please all taste buds. In addition, the event has partnered with Wynwood neighbor, Miami Club Rum. Several bars will be equipped with the hand-crafted rum made in Miami’s first distillery by artisans with a family history of rum production that dates back five generations. Beer lovers rejoice! The Blue Moon Brew Pub will be back with a fully stocked selection of cold brews and mixed drinks. New this year is the Wynwood Culinary Showcase, which will feature top restaurants and chefs from the area showcasing their cuisine. Wynwood Life is sponsored by Miami Club Rum

This year’s musical line-up is bigger and better, featuring many local favorites including Problem Kidz, Spam Allstar, Suenalo, The Tremends, Danger Flow and Elastic Bond to name a few. For a complete schedule of performances, click on Live Music at www.WynwoodLife.com.

Photographs of Historic Little Farm House on 3/8/15

Historic Little Farm House on Sunday, March 8, 2105.

“Heralded by Miami historians and design enthusiasts alike, (formerly known as The Magic City Farm) is, by any measure, a unique place. Built in the 1920’s, located on a bend of the Little River section of the Miami River on the edge of Little Haiti, is an eclectic one-acre oasis consisting of a 1,200 square foot farm house, two story boathouse and six colorful cottages featuring rustic furnishings – all made out of Dade County pine and rescued from a trailer park down the road.”

“A throw back in time, wildlife freely roam on or about the property, from the manatees that drift by slowly on the river close to the three hundred foot sea wall, to the ducks, chickens and iguanas that can be seen as they wander about on the lush grounds, a large area planted with native and exotic trees. Each of the eight structures on the property is charming in its own way, some painted in cheerful Caribbean colors, others in varying tones of white.  The cabins, some of which have kitchens and bathrooms, and the boathouse, which has both, have been leased for short stays.”

The property (281 N.E. 84 Street, Miami, Florida 33138) has been featured in photo and film shoots and is available for events. For bookings, please contact the new owner, Gabriella von Rosen at info@miamifarmhouse.com.

Miguel Rodez’s gives us a glimpse into his fantasy world in his new exhibit “Spring Forward” through a collection of paintings and monotypes that will be on view just in time for the Spring Equinox. Emphasizing the sensuality of flowers is nothing new. Georgia O’Keefe and others have done it in the past. However, Rodez makes an impressive entrance into this genre with flowers that are no ordinary blooms. Using what some have described as magical realism, he creates sexy flowers, endowed with much more than just beauty. These lusty creations manage to be bold without being vulgar. Experience the fantasy on Saturday, March 21,

ABOUT THE FILM FESTIVAL

This one-day film festival will explore cinema’s stylish film noir and neo-noir genres in the developing world. Film noir from the 1930s-1950s is characterized by stark, angular shadows; conflicted anti-heroes; chiaroscuro lighting; determined, beautiful, scheming women; obscured scenes; and isolation in modern cities. Neo-noir addresses philosophical questions about the essence of human nature, guilt, redemption, and problems of knowledge, memory and identity, while blurring the lines between right and wrong, good and evil. Two films per genre will be screened to introduce and expose the art of stylized filmmaking and foreign films in Opa-locka.

FREE public event. Viewer discretion is advised as some films may not be suitable for children.

ABOUT THE FILMS & SCREENING TIMES

12:00 PM – The Goddess (“Shennü” – 1934, China) – 85 minutes, drama, PG
Street walker by night, devoted mother by day, a woman fights to get her son an education amid criminal and social injustice in China. Dismissed as immoral by scholars during the Cultural Revolution, it is now one of the best known films of China’s cinematic golden age. Directed by Wu Yonggang.

2:00 PM – Three Monkeys (“Üç maymun” – 2008, Turkey) – 109 minutes, drama, unrated
This strange detective story set in Istanbul traces the journey of a family struggling to stay together and ignore responsibilities by not seeing, hearing, or talking about the truth. Won Best Special Effects at the Golden Orange Film Festival, Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival, and the Golden Anchor Competition Award at the Haifa International Film Festival. Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan.

4:00 PM – Bob the Gambler (“Bob Le Flambeur” – 1956, France) – 98 minutes, drama/thriller, PG
A tribute to classic American gangster films and inspiration for French New Wave filmmakers, Bob Le Flambeur is about an aging gangster and gambler in Paris who navigates the treacherous world of pimps, moneymen and naïve associates while plotting one last score: the heist of the Deauville casino. Directed by Jean-Pierre Melville.

6:00 PM – How to Steal 2 Million (2011, South Africa) – 84 minutes, drama/action, ages 16+
A dark crime drama set in gritty, unforgiving city streets, the film follows a robber who gets out of jail and finds that his partner, who never got caught, has married his former fiancée. Desperate for cash, he agrees to help his partner out with a deviant plan in this South African homage to film noir. Won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and Best Achievement in Editing at the 2012 African Movie Academy Awards. Directed by Charlie Vundla.

Light refreshments and snacks will be served.

Kick off O, Miami Poetry Festival and National Poetry Month with the smoothest event April: a lyrical boat cruise up the Miami River.

Co-created and -produced with O, Miami , Miami River Poetry Cruise is a journey into the Heart of Dade-ness, guided by locals, protected by pythons, and serenaded by some of Miami’s best poets in a round-robin, “tour-guide” format invented just for this occasion. Hear the first-ever Prayer to Bayside, the second Ode to Fort Dallas, and settle, once and for all, via poetry, the debate of which is the better fish spot: Garcia’s or Casablanca?

Tickets will include free beer provided by Biscayne Bay Brewing. (After that, it’s a cash bar. Yes, there’s a bar on the boat. Why would you ever get on a boat that DIDN’T have a bar?) Light snacks will be provided.

The cruise boards promptly at 6:30 p.m. from Bayside Marina, travels up the Miami River, and re-docks in Bayside at 8:30 p.m.

Your ticket also gets you a free drink at the Official Afterparty at The Intercontinental Hotel.

Photographs of The Record Man World Premiere at the Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival on 3/10/15

The Record Man World Premiere at the Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival on Tuesday, March 10, 2015.

Before there was a music business there was Henry Stone, who shaped and catapulted the sound of 1970s Miami into the mainstream with his unique hit-breaking label TK Records and affiliates. Stone started out in the music distribution business which led him to establish his own independent music label which he ran from a warehouse in Hialeah.

TK Record’s first big international hit was George McCrae’s Rock Your Baby in 1974, one of the songs credited to starting the disco revolution. The hits kept coming and by the end of the 1970s the label had several #1 songs in the Billboard Top 100 chart like Get Down Tonight and That’s The Way (I Like It) by KC and the Sunshine Band and Anita Ward’s Ring My Bell. Not long after the disco era was over TK Records went bankrupt, but Stone still had one last piece to add to the Miami music sound puzzle when he helped release what would become the first million seller freestyle hit record Fascinated by Company B and the rest is legit Miami music history.– Andres Castillo

Future Painting, is the culmination of 4 years of research into video mapped paintings and will feature various approaches to integrating video and technology into mixed-media collage paintings. Through the use of video projections on top of physical paintings and translucent collages created directly on the face of video screens, Justin Wood transforms and twists the physical composition into a mesmerizing psychedelic experience. These works challenge the viewers perception of where the physical world ends and where the digital world begins and asks the question, Can painting and video exist at the same time? The show will also feature a site specific interactive wall painting that will respond to the depth and motion of the viewer through the use of a Kinect sensor, and allow the viewer to transform the video with their movement.

About Sheila Fraga
One of the most important reasons of my artist work is the need to reflect my feelings like a Cuban woman and experiences with a chronological- spiritual character about my past, present and future. In this scenery I show reconciliation, nostalgias, religion beliefs, memories, like pieces that are assembled within a puzzle. I create many compositions, recreated in family pictures, appropriations of passages of the Art History that are uncontextualized to the reality. I deal with identity and migration themes to represent my today’s conflicts. Sometimes I use humor and sadness images like a “Cuban Ajiaco”. I take the oil paintings, charcoal drawing, collage, mixed media and the Cutout. In this long road appear answers to questions such as: What I am looking at, where I am now and how can I get to achieve it? My work is an autobiographic reflection of my life.

About Litana
Litana is a self taught artist. She currently resides in Miami. She mainly creates in oils but likes to explore other mediums. She has participated in collaborations with other artists and in group exhibitions. She creates to inspire the imagination.

About Vivian Estalella
Cuban-American artist Vivian Estalella was born and raised in Miami, Florida in a family of strong independent women. As a little girl, she never played with dolls or toys. Instead, she preferred to spend her time coloring. She was always happier with a box of crayons or paints than a Barbie doll. Always creative, she enjoyed the arts from a very young age. At the age of 15, a trip to Mexico awakened her passion for painting. The intensely rich colors of Mexican art struck a cord and, together with her Cuban roots, formed a style that is both distinctive and uniquely vibrant. The sights, sounds, exotic tastes, and passionate people of the tropics, along with the sensuous female form, are all prevalent in her work.
Vivian’s collection has been displayed at several art shows and fairs. She was also a resident artist at Viernes Culturales, Miami’s monthly art fair in historic Little Havana for several years. Today, her work can be seen in private collections and exhibited at seasonal art shows. At every opportunity, Vivian gives back to the community. Several pieces have been donated to auctions benefiting various local charities.

About DJ Hank Justice
DJ/Writer/Editor from Miami that is fighting musical injustice one beat at a time. In 2012, Hank reunited with one of his long-lost loves: Music. He was always the kid that turned to music. It was always deeply embedded in him since birth. While he was in high school and college, he always found himself at parties wishing he could be in control of the music. He wasn’t interested in partying; he was interested in orchestrating them. Hank’s mission is to destroy musical injustice in the form of DJ sets chock-full of music that people can enjoy and move to. He is often asked what he is playing and is often told that his selection is unique and excellent. This is because he spends hours each day carefully digging for gems anywhere he can. He loves sharing these sounds with the world and hopes to be able to do so more often and for more people. It’s a musical story that’s forever under construction.

Wynwood wall art and artists are reaching an all time fever pitch and Wall Brawl will be showcasing exactly that. Join us and see first hand how some of the most recognizable street artists do what they do best, as they battle it out and raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities. The fact that the Oxygen Channel has started airing their new TV show “Street Art Throwdown”, specifically on street art, is only compounding how hot this trend has become.

Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to watch some of the biggest names in street art go face to face and compete for the title of the Best Street Artist of Miami.
Open bar by Bombay Sapphire and Zacapa Rum with lite bites by Morgans for all those attending as you place your vote for your favorite artist and we auction off their pieces.

At Wall Brawl Miami we will be auctioning off the pieces to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities as a silent auction. What his means is that recognized artists will be donating their time and art to help raise money. Art enthusiasts and art collectors will have a unique opportunity to acquire a piece from a recognized artists that would normally go for tens of thousands, at any given gallery, for pennies on the dollar. Our silent auction has no reserve and creates a very unique opportunity to be able to buy original, one-of-a-kind pieces by some of the top artists, starting at $1.00 dollar.

Artists include : HecOne Love, Skott Marsi, Bruno Vago, Furious (DAM Crew), KEDS (DAM Crew), Monique Lassooij, Claudia La Bianca, TeePop, NateD, Wilson, Jorge-Miguel Rodriguez, Ill Surge, GG, Atomik, Ivan Roque, Registered Artist, Aquarela Allyson Sabol, Nicole Salgar, Rigo Leon, Kazilla, Trek 6

Every year in March my partners and I always do a big, art related exposition and this is what we have chosen to produce this year. Our goal has always been to make Miami a major contender in the art world outside of Art Basel. Our belief has always been that Miami has a cultural and artistic backbone that only now is being recognized by everyone else.

The success and news of our expositions have garnered us worldwide attention and always in the month of March, so there is no association with Art Basel. Don’t just take my word for it you can very easily Google: Dali Miami and Haring Miami. There is an underlying story here waiting to get out.

This year we decided to turn our focus to home because we need the world to know that Miami is a hot bed for talented artists. Wynwood graffiti and wall art has reached an all time fever pitch. People from all over the world are coming to our little neighborhood just to check out this incredible symbiosis between property owners of buildings in Wynwood and graffiti artists. Business owners are now looking for artists to team up with so they can make their store fronts a piece of art that people will walk or drive around too and see. Business owners are incorporating their signs and business logos with the art to garner more attention and foot traffic.

Admission is only $40.00 and it includes music, open bar as well as lite bites. The brawl will take place March 6, 2015 from 7pm-10pm at The Annex located at 44 NE 29 ST in Wynwood. Space is limited and this being one of the most unique events in Miami it will sell out soon. Pre-sale tickets are already underway, get your tickets on line before we reach capacity at WallBrawlMiami .

Photographs of The Reunion: Exhibition Opening at Bakehouse Art Complex on 2/13/15

The Reunion: Exhibition Opening at Bakehouse Art Complex on Friday, February 13, 2015.

Audrey Love Gallery: The Reunion

“The Bakehouse Art Complex opened in 1987 in the former Art Deco American Bakeries Company building in today’s Wynwood Arts District, by a group of artists relocating from Coconut Grove. These artists founded the nonprofit Bakehouse Art Complex and repurposed the industrial building into working studios and galleries, ensuring a permanent venue for local artists to explore their creativity.

This exhibition celebrates the 29-year history of the Bakehouse, which has seen over one thousand resident artists and continued success as a stakeholder in the ever-growing Miami arts environment. The selection of artists included in the 2,600 square-foot Audrey Love Gallery show reflects the 29-year history of the Bakehouse and its role as an incubator for art careers – and the rise of the visual arts – in Miami over the years. Exhibition highlights include an opening reception, innovative art talk-concert hybrid presented in partnership with IlluminArts, a puppetry master class with Pablo Cano, and a closing reception. Confirmed artists include: Pablo Cano, Xavier Cortada, Veronica Garcia, Suza Talbot, Maggie Davis, Carrie Sieh, Patricia Schnall Gutierrez, Christian Bernard, Ross Ford, Beatricia Sagar, Luis Diaz, John La Huis, Tracey Hagen, Richard Labarbera, Juan Griego, Maria Sonia Martin, Robert Apfel, Marcos Valella, Gustavo Oviedo, Armando Chagon, Henry Mar.”

Tagir Saydkuzhin and Artist Tony Curry announce the launch of the contemporary grenade art “The Proposal” available for exclusive viewing and purchase at 1826 Restaurant & Lounge on Valentine’s Day.

Whether you are a collector or someone looking to give all of yourself in a contemporary statement “The Proposal” is an embellishment of significant proportion.

New York City artist Tony Curry has arrived in Miami and the art world is paying close attention. Self-proclaimed as a Fashion Surrealist he is best known for his painting titled “American Dream” depicting a breathtaking female draped in the iconic American flag wearing nothing more than a pair of red-soled Christian Louboutin high heels.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Curry’s debut of the limited edition sculpture series titled: “The Proposal” is a dichotomy of self-expression. A semblance of the male psyche that has always been at war with himself yields to the overpowering heartfelt appeal of true love. The inspirational piece is a beautifully crafted 24k gold hand grenade (non explosive) sculpture with an eye-popping engagement/wedding ring as the pull pin. A visual innovation for any collector; the grenade sculpture collection is being released in various chrome colors as well as precious metals.

The significant works create a must see exhibition for any contemporary art, fashion or fine food enthusiast. The premier at 1826 Restaurant and Lounge will be like no other. “I wanted to do something different on the art scene” explained Tagir Saydkuzhin. “Debuting world-class contemporary art combined with the best world-class food & music is innovation and that is what my restaurant is built on.”

“It is an honor to premier my work at 1826 Restaurant and Lounge,” said Curry “the hyper modern restaurant and nightclub is the perfect marriage for my work. I couldn’t think of a better partnership for The Proposal.”

Those looking to give all of yourself in a contemporary statement will view the “The Proposal” as a one of a kind embellishment of your eternal love. Meet us at 1826 Collins for a night to remember. For reservations call 305-763-8860.

About 1826 – Located in the heart of South Beach between 18th and 19th Street on Collins Avenue, 1826 Restaurant and Lounge is currently the hottest scene in Miami Beach. The four level 8,200 square foot hotspot is the vision of owner and Russian native Tagir Saydkuzhin who sought to combine the best food, the best music, the best service and now the best of the art world. The restaurant was designed by Samy Chams of Prospect Design. Its exquisite food is headed by Trophée Passion gold winning Chef Luke Bergman and team.

Following their tradition of bringing the best of classic ballet for the families, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents: “Fairy Doll” by composer Josef Bayer and choreographed by Maestro Vladimir Issaev.
“Fairy Doll”, originally “Die Puppenfee” was first performed in 1888, and was one of the most successful productions in the late 19th century. Issaev recreated this ballet in two acts in 2009. “Bayer’s music is so inspiring and beautiful, I could not let his opportunity pass by”, says Issaev. “I fell in love with every variation of this music and the more I researched, the more I felt South Florida’s audiences deserved a ballet production of this kind.”
It tells the story of a young boy who works in a doll store that has distinctive dolls from different countries and a beautiful Fairy Doll. Customers just fall in love with the stunning doll. At the end of the day, the owner of the store closes the shop, and the young and distracted assistant is left alone, locked inside. As the night falls, the tired young boy cannot believe his eyes! The Fairy Doll comes to life, and with her magic, she brings all the toys of the store to life.
The production counts on creative and imaginative costume designer Jorge Gallardo to make all the ballet dancers look like real dolls and the sets. On the main roles dancers Lillian Hill, Yuki Beppu, Takayuki Asai, Hirofumi Kitazume and Ramil Bagmanov will share the stage during these four fantastic performances along the rest of the professional corps of ballet.
There will be more than 60 dolls that will come to life from March, 7th to 15th at Aventura Arts & Cultural Centre and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Crazy for Meninas… By popular request we’ve extended the exhibit “Meninas Unwrapped”. Join MANO Fine Art on Saturday, January 17th during the Bird Road Art Walk for a last look at the popular exhibition “Meninas Unwrapped” featuring work by Daniel Garcia and MANO.

About the exhibit
“Meninas Unwrapped”, is a nod to the popularity of Diego Velazquez’s ICONIC motif interpreted by Daniel Garcia and MANO. Velazquez would be pleased.

The interpretation of the world’s masterpieces is hardly a new phenomenon. Artists often look to the past to learn from the old masters. In “Meninas Unwrapped” contemporary artists: Daniel Garcia and MANO take on Diego Velazquez, interpreting his famed 1656 painting, “Las Meninas”, considered one of the greatest masterpieces ever painted.

The exhibit is not only a matter of looking back at the past but also at the popularity of the La Menina, it seems that every generation has made Velazquez’s “meninas” a reflection of their own, hundreds of artists from Picasso to Vik Muniz have been inspired by the works’ enigmatic qualities. Velazquez would be pleased

MANO Fine Art Project Space is the working studio of Miami-based artist MANO and an exhibition and project space for art related events. MANO Fine Art is one of the founding members of the Bird Road Art Walk that is held on the third Saturday of each month.

Miguel Rodez Art Projects presents Beyond Innocence featuring the work of Sergio Chavez. Not your typical sales pitch: Sergio Chavez does not try to impress one with astute use of materials. He is not adept at creating subtle gradient color shifts. No. He is not a master draftsman either. Instead, Sergio Chavez is a master of enchantment. Those who focus only on academic refinement may be repulsed by his work. Some may say that their little daughter can do this. The fact is no one’s little daughter can do or actually does this. He does! There is a lot more going on than meets the eye. Although his style may render him vulnerable to harsh criticism from the academic crowd, he consistently and incessantly puts out work that, either makes us think or that delights us with his unique provocative charm. He uses humor, satire and humility to hook us in and then make us think before we even realize what just happened. This devotion to visually communicate what comes from his soul, in a poetic, child-like and disarming style, regardless of what critics may think, is what being an artist is all about. Sixty-one of his pieces will be on view and available at extremely reasonable prices at Miguel Rodez Art Projects.

Photographs by Anthony Jordon of Average Joe Art Sale and Annette’s 50th Birthday Party at Yo Space on 1/4/15

Photographs taken by Anthony Jordon of Average Joe Art Sale and Annette’s 50th Birthday Party at Yo Space on Sunday, January 4, 2015.  What a wonderful way to celebrate my 50th birthday, surrounded by amazing friends and beautiful art. The Average Joe Art Sales had visiting artists along with their resident artists selling limited edition prints, original art and wonderful merchandise ranging from $5.00 to $500.00, so you can find something no matter your budget.  While you are there, you can visit with the resident artists and see what they are currently working on in their studio. To make it even better they donated 10% of all sales to a non-profit organization , this month it was Life Is Art, Inc.

About YO: “Founded in April 2011, what began as a passion for art, music and Miami has evolved into a force to be reckoned with in the local scene. Bringing together creatives from all walks of life, we strive to shine a light on the elements of Miami culture that should be recognized and celebrated. The company was born on a Facebook page and to this day that’s where content is most frequently updated/uploaded to. The website is a great resource for it’s Event Calendar to keep you up to date on what’s going on in advance, and also for the Blog section where you can read everything from artist interviews to philosophical ramblings.”

The story of a South Beach legend

Walk to the Fifth Street lifeguard stand on South Beach at 5:15 pm any day. You will see a bearded, long-haired shirtless man wearing black shorts, one black glove, and a headband that’s black, too. People call him the “Raven,” and he’s been standing in front of that lifeguard stand at that time for the last forty years, getting ready for his eight-mile jog up and down the beach. That’s right—Raven has run eight miles on the sands of South Beach every day since 1975, through concussions, hurricanes, food poisoning, animal attacks, hail and high water. And he’s still going.

This event will feature:

A reading of poetry written by the Raven himself
Screening of the feature documentary
Invitation to join the Raven on his famous 8 mile run on the beach following the film at 4:15 PM

There are a ton of amazing immersive media projects being created these days, but rarely do people discuss the process for how these types of projects actually get made.

The form is still so new that it can feel like a bit of a mystery. This workshop will answer questions like:

What are the key steps in conceiving and creating immersive media projects?
What are the phases and what activities happen in each of them?
What tools do you use in each phase?
What are the types of team members you need and how do you find them?
The workshop will commence with a hands-on paper prototyping exercise where we put what we’ve discussed to use.

This workshop is limited to 20 attendees. Creators should come with a project that they are working on (as well as a laptop/tablet if they wish).

ABOUT THE HOST

A digital veteran of 20 years, Mike Knowlton has always pushed the boundaries of storytelling and technology. He is a recognized leader in the global Transmedia community and is the Co-Founder of the non-profit, immersive storytelling community StoryCode. MELANCHOLALALAND

It’s the 21st century, and time to re-invent opera, but in a way that’s more fun, less pretentious, and a little messed up.

MelanchoLalaland™—with music by composer and Florida Atlantic University professor Joey Bargsten and libretto by writer Thea Zimmer—accomplishes this by fusing traditional elements of opera, theater, and dance with new and experimental visual media forms, all set to an electronic music score. MelanchoLalaland™ tells the dark tragi-comic story of three artist/engineers who design mind-altering experiences, enhanced by self-pleasuring technologies and a variety of brain chemicals. They deal with disgruntled employees, corporate takeovers, dissatisfied girlfriends, and cheesy space-aliens.

A PROPER MARRIAGE

Concept / Choreography: Pioneer Winter

A Proper Marriage is a speculative piece that comments on the perceived co-dependence of music and movement, especially live music with dance–underlying properties of a dancer’s dependence on composition, and the musician’s own foresight to create action from sound. Sheet music is attached to the backs of dancers, and the musicians follow the dancer in order to read the music and maintain the melody. Irony rests in the notion that if the dancer moves too quickly and the musician cannot keep up, the music will falter and the dancer’s own rhythm will stop.

Pioneer Winter is a Miami-native choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker of Pioneer Winter / Collective. He is co-director of RIFT Blackbox and the curator of transmedia performances for FilmGate Interactive Media Conference. Winter also directs Project LEAP (Living Equality through Arts and Performance), a free dance and creative communication program for LGBTQ teens that focuses on teaching how to use the arts for activism and social change. He was recently awarded the 2014-2015 Miami Choreographer’s Fellowship, and is on faculty of the FIU Honors College. His project Grass Stains was also recently awarded a Knight Arts Challenge Grant.
