In response to an overwhelming demand, “ICONS • The Art of Celebrity Illusion” has added a second show on Saturday, August 28, at 8 p.m. at Mizner Park Cultural Center. For the past year, hundreds of thousands have enjoyed Seasons 52 Chef Elvis Bravo’s engaging cooking demonstrations virtually, as part of Cooking with The Galleria’s free online series. Now, Seasons 52 is offering a limited opportunity to meet Chef Bravo in-person on Saturday, July 31, at 2 p.m., at a special culinary experience to benefit the Heart Gallery of Broward County, a respected nonprofit organization committed to finding loving families for the hardest to place foster children.

Chef Bravo will be cooking a few summer BBQ ideas – quick and craveable recipes that you can whip-up at home including Melon Basil Burrata Salad With Crispy Prosciutto, Signature Blackened Mahi Fish Tacos with Mango Pineapple Salsa and No Bake Lemon Blueberry Icebox Cake.

Through Cooking with The Galleria, Chef Bravo has provided educational and spirited culinary tutorials about how to prepare and serve delicious dishes including Caramelized Grilled Sea Scallops, Bone-in, Dry-rubbed Pork Chop, Chilean Sea Bass, Gruyere French Omelette, Maryland Style Lump Crab Cakes, Seafood Paella, Roasted Vegetable Gnocchi, Shrimp and Grits and Carne Asada Fajitas. Biscayne Bay has reached its tipping point due to years of neglect, pollution and other mitigating factors. Five local filmmakers are urging residents to do something about it through videos they created for Save the Bay, a PSA competition recently held by Oolite Arts. Winners received $2,500 each to produce their 30-60 second public service announcement for the contest.

The public is invited to view the short videos and meet the contest winners during a special screening that will take place at a virtual event, starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28. During the free community event, Oolite Arts will also hold a discussion between the filmmakers, the organization’s Cinematic Arts Manager Danielle Bender and Miami-Dade County’s Chief Bay Officer Irela Bagué.Additionally, the public can vote on their favorite PSA, which will receive a People’s Choice Award and extra $1,000, through August 12, 2021 at oolitearts.org/save-the-bay. Oolite Arts presents “Where There is Power”, a summer exhibition about the many ways that artists access, spy upon, expose, memorialize, and occasionally trouble the machinations of power. The Miami-based artists featured in the show include José Álvarez, Asif Farooq, Edny Jean Joseph, Francisco Masó, Yucef Merhi, Reginald O’Neal, Rodolfo Peraza, Chire Regans, Tony Vázquez-Figueroa, Judi Werthein, Agustina Woodgate, Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares. Duane Eubanks’ music consists of engaging melodies and horn blends that reflect the soft tender optimism of a relaxed quintessential smooth jazz trumpeter and that of a lively hard bop virtuoso. Duane Eubanks was born into a family of gifted talent. His mother, pianist Vera Eubanks was Kenny Barron’s first piano teacher and a professional church pianist; his brothers, renowned trombonist, Robin Eubanks and guitarist, Kevin Eubanks, former bandleader of the “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”; as well as his uncle, legendary pianist Ray Bryant all contributed to his early music education. Now available in South Florida! L’Chaim Farm, the only Cholov Yisroel Kosher farm in Florida, is hosting its Farmers Market every Sunday from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. The products are grown and produced on-site at L’Chaim Farm, using the highest standards of organic farming practices.

At the Farmers Market, guests can purchase products, including a variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs, a selection of KM-certified, Cholov Yisroel goat’s milk products (butter, regular milk, chocolate milk, strawberry milk, cold brew, buttermilk and cheese), free range eggs and more.

There is a goat milking demo each Sunday at 12:15 p.m., and guests can also meet and pet the goats. Locust Projects presents Hidden in Plain View, the seventh edition of the LAB MFA summer exhibition program featuring Victoria Ravelo, MFA candidate at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University.

Ravelo will be in residence June 1-30, during which time she will transform the storefront Mobile Studio into a working laboratory in which she will create sugar sculptures daily. The use of sugar references the ties of the local community to the Caribbean and the impact the sugar industry has had on the Caribbean as well as its historical significance and influence globally. Although initially only available to those in the ruling class and used as an opulent display of wealth, sugar evolved to become so accessible that those outside of this class developed their own traditions associated with it that continue today.

The finished collaboratively-created installation, on view from July 1 through August 7, serves as an archive of local memory and maps the cultural landscape of Miami’s diverse communities through space and time.

Locust Projects presents Rhythm of Speech, a new experimental audiovisual installation by Miami-based artist and musician Juan Ledesma. Ledesma’s first solo presentation draws connections between diverse musical traditions and our collective lived experiences by exploring the musical potential of spoken accents.

Ledesma’s artistic practice is in constant dialogue with his music-making and seeks to identify how space, time, and sound can materially relate to one another through process-driven explorations. For Rhythm of Speech, the artist invited three Miami-based musicians to create a musical score based on a linguistic analysis of their respective accents. Although accents are commonly considered linguistic indicators of nationality, cultural upbringing, or socio-economic background, Ledesma aims to reframe language as a collective repository of sounds that can be used towards creative musical compositions.

Locust Projects presents Homeline, a new site-specific installation by mutlidisciplinary artists Tal Amitai-Lavi and Tal Frank.

Homeline is inspired by the architectural structures of Locust Projects’ Main Gallery. The installation is composed of three domestic elements created out of unexpectedly weightless materials, including light and delicately-installed nylon strings- a window that separates the space, a projected carpet, and a slowly flowing curtain. These objects generate a succinct, close-knit architectural-sculptural setting in black and white. The installation explores reflections, inversions, illusions, and space disruptions and creates an illusionistic, dreamlike environment. Viewers are confronted by their perception and senses, entering a world whose foundations are fragile, in which life-sized architectural structures have lost their functionality and expected physicality.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will feature Florida historian Dr. Joe Knetsch on the next July 8 noon segment of its “Meet the Author” interactive Zoom series. Knetsch is the co-author with Pamela Gibson of the recently released Florida in World War I (Arcadia Publishing/The History Press, ISBN: 978-1467148290), a historical deep dive into the role a sparsely populated and largely rural Florida played as America plunged into World War I. The book delves into the state’s sacrifices and contributions with a look at its naval accomplishments – the proud USS Florida, too often mentioned as a mere adjunct to the Atlantic Fleet, receives a just accounting, as does the utterly devastating loss of the USS Tampa, the highest death toll the navy suffered in the war. Sunshine State foresters served critical roles abroad, and local libraries became essential hubs for promoting rationing and reporting news from overseas. Floridian aid workers and soldiers training for departure were stricken with the Spanish flu, a pandemic that shook the globe with force equal to the war itself.

Dr. Joe Knetsch is the author of more than 200 articles and 12 books concerning Florida history. This is his sixth book for Arcadia/The History Press and covers an area in which he has a strong interest. He has been a constant reviewer of military history books for the Journal of America’s Military Past and other professional journals. He holds a doctorate from Florida State University and, for 28 years, was the historian for the Division of State Lands, Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Since his retirement, he has continued to research and publish history. He lives in Tallahassee with his wife, Linda, and their five cats. Knetsch joins novelist Y.M. Masson, architect and historic preservation consultant Arthur Jay Marcus, historian John Bailey, plus authors Kingsley Guy and Donn R. History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “The Art of Tim Forman: Florida Everglades” from Saturday, July 3 through Sunday, September 26. Forman’s colorful impressionist environmentally inspired works will be on display at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue).

Tim Forman is the third generation of Formans to have been born and reared in South Florida. He first picked-up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives.

Entry to the exhibit is free with general admission – $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). About Timbalive:

Timbalive is one of the largest and most successful groups of Timba in the United States and the world. The unique band sound, sophisticated production techniques, and a spectacular live show are second to none in the Latin Music scene. The band was created and burst onto South Florida’s music scene in August 2008, by Leo Garcia (timbales & director), offering the best of Cuban music with a mix of different rhythms from around the world. All the band’s members are highly trained musicians from the most prestigious music schools in Cuba and come from well-known groups from the Island.

Their first album, “From Miami a la Habana ” created one of the most unexpected successes in the Latin Music History in the United States. Through their vast discography, Cuban & Latin music hierarchy have shared studio sessions and stages with them. About Nic & N’Taya:

Nic & N’Taya is one of only a few bands that have managed successfully to produce a creative body of work in the extremely difficult Cuban Music environment of South Florida. Their last two critically acclaimed albums “#EstoEsUnMisil” y “Tu No Querias Changüí? Coje Changüí !” has been a testament that Timba y Changüí is alive and thriving in Miami.
Changüí is a style of Cuban music that originated in the early 19th century in the eastern region of Guantánamo Province, specifically Baracoa. It arose in the sugar cane refineries and in the rural communities populated by slaves. Changüí combines the structure and elements of Spain’s canción and the Spanish guitar with African rhythms and percussion instruments of Bantu origin. Changüí is considered a predecessor of son montuno (the ancestor of modern salsa), which has enjoyed tremendous popularity in Cuba throughout the 20th century. Timba is a Cuban genre of music based on popular Cuban music along with salsa, American funk/R&B, and the strong influence of Afro-Cuban folkloric music.

Timba rhythm sections differ from their salsa counterparts because timba emphasizes the bass drum, which is not used in salsa bands.
Here’s a sparkling high-voltage band lead by singer Nick “N’Taya ” Martinez who seems to have successfully channeled the spirit and drive of the Timba & Changüí genres to a new generation of Salsa dancers. N’Taya has created a thoroughly enjoyable sound that is perfectly suited for the dance club or your next Cuban or Latin party. Many Miami bands in the past have gotten our hopes up, only to break up. Hopefully, this one will stick around for a while. Stay tuned!

Make Music Miami, the annual celebration of music on the summer solstice, returns this year on Monday, June 21 with dozens of free, virtual and in-person outdoor concerts, music lessons, jam sessions and other exciting music-making events, spotlighting music’s power to connect, comfort, unite and uplift. This Saturday, June 19th, Miami’s FIRST “full open seating” event post-COVID is taking place. Triller, the AI driven social media company behind single handedly driving today’s pop culture, is hosting their Triller Fight Club Event, which will include a blockbuster concert, taking place in Miami, hosted by Mario Lopez and Snoop Dogg.

Nonprofit Aims to Bulldoze Barriers Affecting Diversity in Miami
MCCJ to Conduct an Open Discussion as the Nation Struggles with Racism

MIAMI, Fl., June 2021 — Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the U.S. is right around the corner. Historically designated on June 19th, it’s a day for ALL of us to celebrate. For MCCJ, the non-profit organization that advocates for diversity and equality, it’s a day to reflect in dialogue and plan for a better future. As part of their “Can We Talk? Really, Can We Talk?” series, MCCJ will present “Bulldozing Barriers: Reflections of Juneteenth & Diversity in Miami” — an effort to encourage continuous self-development and respect not just for the black community, but for all cultures.

“We invite people of all races, religions and cultures to join us in conversation as we acknowledge a period in history that should have shaped and influenced our society, but due to ongoing discord and violence against people of color and religious backgrounds over this past year, it’s become clear that we are regressing rather than progressing,” says MCCJ’s Executive Director, Matthew Anderson. He will be moderating a frank discussion about racial fears and how it affects our progress for a more inclusive community. Following the panel discussion, people are invited to enjoy the “One Way” exhibit at the Hampton Art Lovers, a non-profit art gallery that advocates for black art, and is open to all who love art in all its forms.

This dynamic conversation will expand on a formative moment in Michael Richards’ artistic practice, and his integral involvement with a group of Black artists emerging in the 1990s. In 1992–1993, Michael Richards participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program—a year-long program for artists and curators that encourages critical study and theoretical inquiry—in New York City, along with artists Dread Scott, Lyle Ashton Harris, and Renee Cox. Moderated by Whitney Museum curator Rujeko Hockley, this conversation will reunite Cox, Harris, and Scott, each of whom, in addition to being friends with Richards, engaged him in their own art-making.

A weeklong hands-on cooking camp taught by Biltmore chef instructors with special workshops by the hotel’s acclaimed hotel chefs, the Kids Culinary Academy offers weeklong sessions open to children ages 9-16.

MIAMI BEACH, FLA.—June 1, 2021—The Betsy-South Beach Hotel (The Betsy) announces two events to honor Juneteenth 2021. Both events are presented in partnership with the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and Florida International University Miami Beach Urban Studios. Juneteenth — a combination of “June” and “nineteenth” – recognizes the date that formerly enslaved African Americans were informed that they were finally free. Though African Americans have long celebrated Juneteenth, the National Museum of African American History and Culture notes ‘this monumental event remains largely unknown to most Americans.”
Juneteenth celebrations remind us that freedom and racial equality have always been and continue to be a hard-fought battle for African Americans. WHY:In 2013, Karina was a contestant on NBC’s #1 Hit TV Show, The Voice. She made it to the Top 16 on the live shows. She was originally on Adam Levine’s team but was later stolen by Shakira after her epic performance of “Its a man’s, man’s, man’s world” which turned into a YouTube sensation. With her highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, Karina Iglesias brings forth a strong element of innovation and heralds a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida to Honduran parents, Karina Iglesias’ sound mirrors the diverse musical and cultural influences that have shaped her character and forged her individuality as an artist. With a style equally informed by rhythm and blues, boleros, gospel and hip-hop Karina delivers her performances with the intimacy of a deep soul crooner and the conviction and drive of a dauntless female singer/songwriter.

On this National Pink Day, June 23rd, The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative (WBHI)— a leader in disease prevention and early detection community outreach— invites women to “Mask Up and Get Your Mammogram”, following healthcare guidance while ensuring timely screenings delayed by the pandemic.

Women are encouraged to contact WBHI to schedule their mammogram at no cost by calling 305-825-4081. Valued partner Jackson Health System will also be providing heart screenings, presenting a more comprehensive preventive care approach. As WBHI’s community partner that cares deeply about the community, Fresco y Más in Hialeah will host the breast and heart screenings to be held on National Pink Day, June 23rd by appointment only.

Everyone near and far is invited to support the campaign with pink inspired images and messages, and the hashtag #WBHIPinkDay by posting on social media and tagging Facebook @TheWBHI and Instagram @WBHI on National Pink Day, June 23rd for awareness and remembrance.

With pink being the color for breast cancer, WBHI’s summer breast cancer awareness campaign on National Pink Day helps women access critical resources to help beat the odds of breast cancer. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime; and the death rate has increased. Over the course of the pandemic, mammogram utilization decreased as much as 80%. Delayed, or missed cancer screenings could mean diagnosis at a later stage with a poorer prognosis.

“Our summer breast cancer campaign on National Pink Day reminds women it’s time to ‘Mask Up and Get Your Mammogram’, practicing preventive care while protecting our healthcare heroes in clinical settings,” states Andrea Ivory, WBHI’s Founder and Executive Director. “Breast cancer is diagnosed year-round, but the good news is that early detection, and disease deterrent lifestyles change and saves lives.

Disease prevention and early detection are critical to fostering healthy communities. Boys Will be Boys is an emotionally charged evening that dissects toxic masculinity and American ideologies on manhood. In a “call and response” military style cadence, performers enter the theater space chanting and marching in formation. “Man up”, “boys don’t cry”, and “take it like a man”, can be heard and are vocalized by dancers as B-Boys, Eagle and Christian battle each other in the street style of dance called “breaking”.

Dynamic resident ballet troupe Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami returns with a thrilling evening of “Generations of Genius,” a program of premieres choreographed by three generations of brilliant artistic masterminds: “Around Midnight,” a high energy, neoclassical ballet by talented DDTM dancer/choreographer Yanis Eric Pikieris, will make its Miami premiere, the luxuriantly captivating “The Four Seasons” by DDTM’s seasoned choreographer Yanis Pikieris (Sr.) to the music of Antonio Vivaldi, and “Touch Me,” a brilliantly emotive male solo created to gospel music by American choreographic icon and Artistic Director of The Joffrey Ballet, the late Gerald Arpino.
