German conductor Matthias Pintscher returns to Miami Beach to present works by his native land’s composers. Operatic master Bernd Alois Zimmermann lets the cello sing in his Song of Hope, performed by NWS’s own Cello Fellow Ben Fryxell, a winner of NWS’s Concerto Competition. In Schreiben, Helmut Lachenmann operates the orchestra as a writer that sometimes whispers and at other times screams. This concert includes the world premiere of a new work—Orun—by Brazilian innovator Marcos Balter, whose works are rooted in hyper-dramatization of live performance.

Hailed as “the greatest single step made in the history of music” by historians, the piece marked Beethoven’s emergence as an original master. Renowned violinist Christian Tetzlaff returns for Alban Berg’s Concerto, what The New York Times christens as one of the greatest works of the 20th century. Leading the program is a sweeping overture by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor led by Conducting Fellow Chad Goodman.

Beethoven on the Beach, Orchestra Miami’s annual FREE outdoor concert series returns this year with Beethoven on the Beach: Reboot! Now that the orchestra has performed all nine symphonies outdoors for free, it’s time to explore some of Beethoven’s lesser-known works. This year’s concert will feature Beethoven’s complete incidental music to Egmont, Goethe’s famous play about a tragic hero. This dramatic and enduring work will be performed in its entirety with English narration by Gordon Kalton Williams, and will feature soprano Robyn Marie Lamp. Also on the program is Schubert’s Symphony N. 4 in C Minor, D 417. Written when Schubert was only 19 years old, it is only one of two symphonies which Schubert wrote in the minor key. Called the “tragic” symphony by the composer, it takes much inspiration from Schubert’s idol, Beethoven, including modeling the opening theme from Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 18 N. 4.

Two performances only! Friday, February 25th at 8 PM at Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 SW 57 Avenue, 33156 and Sunday, March 6th, 7 PM at the North Beach Bandshell, 7275 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, 33141. These are free concerts, with a $10 per person suggested free will donation- no one turned away! No tickets necessary, although advance reservation is strongly recommended. Comfortable theater seats are provided- please do not bring a lawn chair. No outside food or beverages permitted; food and beverage will be available for purchase at the venue. Errollyn Wallen considers Horseplay one of her favorite works due to its vitality and contrast, writing that “it’s the perfect work to be performed by young people.” Franz Joseph Haydn’s string quartet legacy is solidified in the Op. 76 collection, his last complete set.

New Orleans-born, award-winning saxophonist Donald Harrison will open for The Blind Boys of Alabama. Harrison is a musician/composer who master musicians consider a master of every Jazz era, soul, funk, and composer of orchestral classical music. Harrison has been named to the National Endowment for the Arts’ 2022 Jazz Masters class. Harrison and his Quartet will stun the SBJF audience with their ability to blend the swing beat of modern Jazz with hip-hop, funk, and soul music. All About Jazz says Harrison is “one of the most confident and convincing improvisers in jazz today.” The Donald Harrison Quartet includes Donald Harrison on saxophone, Joe Dyson on drums, Nori Naraoka on bass, and Dan Kaufman on piano.
The South Beach Jazz Festival will occur in venues throughout Miami Beach on January 7-9, 2022. The festival takes pride in featuring world-renowned musicians who also have disabilities. Classic, Latin, and New Orleans styles of Jazz are featured. Most of the performances are free, open to the public, and outdoors. Orchestra Miami presents the ultimate New Year’s Eve Celebration- an unforgettable, family-friendly, free beachfront concert of Beethoven’s Symphony N. 9, performed by Orchestra Miami. Sunday Sept 19 from 6-9 PM: Miami Beach Onstage & Global Arts Project present Dante Vargas & the Cat Band. Vargas is a musical producer, arranger, musician and multiple Grammy winner. He was born in Peru in the city of Trujillo, where he started to explore the infinite world of music as a trumpet player. This would take him to visit the most important stages of the world. Due to his vast experience and professionalism, he relocated to Miami, Florida, home of the Latin beat.

This placed him at a very high level where he had the opportunity to perform in multiple genres such as Pop and Latin; he was also able to work with famous artists such as Marc Anthony, J-Lo, Shakira, Carlos Vives and many others. During these experiences, Dante has extracted the best and now leads a group of seven musicians, called “The Cat Band.”

The show will be at Collins Plaza, 2200 Liberty Ave., a new site just adjacent to Collins Park in Miami Beach.

The Miami Beach Reggae Fest 2021, is the latest edition of a Festival created by Eddy Morillo, singer / songwriter and founder of Venezuela’s own Latin Reggae music group Bachaco. It is essentially a vehicle to continue to cultivate the locals’ love for Reggae music with Latin twist, which represent Miami Beach and Greater Miami’s melting pot of cultures and sounds.
The event is taking place on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at the North Beach Bandshell at 7275 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33141, and will be an all ages “Peace & Love” concert featuring three headlining performances:
Fidel Nadal, Argentinian Reggae legend and Latin Grammy nominee known for hit singles such as “Gente Que No” with Todos Tus Muertos, as well as his own “International Love”, and “Emocionado” among others;

Bachaco, performing their Reggae best plus the single “La Policia”;

Doctor Krapula, Colombia’s own Reggae/Ska infused Rock Band with 18 years of history, more tha 500 concerts in 15+ countries, seven album studios, a live DVD and five Latin Grammy nominations, as well as collaborations with Manu Chao, Ska-p, SEEED, Juanes, Café Tacvba, among others.
