Miami New Drama Proudly Presents ELIÁN, a World Premiere Play
The story we all know; told in a way we never imagined

Miami New Drama Artistic Director Michel Hausmann and Managing Director Nicholas Richberg are proud to announce the world premiere of ELIÁN, a new play by Cuban playwright Rogelio Martinez (Miami New Drama’s 7 Deadly Sins, Guggenheim Award). ELIÁN is the first world premiere play kicking off Miami New Drama’s 2022-23 season. It will be playing at the Colony Theatre from Oct. 27 through Nov. 20, 2022, with opening night taking place on Saturday, Oct. 29.

In 1999, a young Cuban refugee, Elián Gonzalez, was found on the shores of Florida clinging to life. We know the story ends with a boy in a closet, a gun pointed at him; but few of us know how it got to that moment. With the help of key players, new information has been uncovered that paints a more complete and accurate picture of the story we all thought we knew. This fast-paced, energetic, and emotionally charged play, revisits an event that left its mark on our community and our country.

“ELIÁN is a story that is very personal to our city and resonated deeply with our Cuban-American community” said Michel Hausmann, Artistic Director. “It was an event that divided our community, had both national and international consequences, and helped define the 2000 elections which changed our global history. This work is an exploration of that moment from the perspective of some of the protagonists of this conflict and will reveal new information that the public has never been made aware of. It will be shocking, irreverent, and emotionally charged. We are thrilled to continue our collaboration with Rogelio, and I feel a great responsibility to be directing this story that is so close to our community.”

The cast for ELIÁN features Daniel Capote (Miami New Drama’s The Cuban Vote) as Jorge Mas Santos, René Granado (The Real Havana Club’s Amparo) as Juan Miguel González, Mike Iveson (What the Constitution Means to Me, Netflix’s Orange is the New Black) as Roger Stone and Bill Clinton, Carmen Pelaez (Rum and Coke, Miami New Drama’s 7 Deadly Sins, Fake) as Janet Reno and Ninoska Pérez, Andhy Mendez (Miami New Drama’s The Cuban Vote, Celia & Fidel at Arena Stage) as Manny Diaz, Jonathan Nichols-Navarro (Miami New Drama’s The Cuban Vote, Anna in the Tropics at the Coconut Grove Playhouse) as Lazaro González, Ricardo Alarcón, and Joe Lieberman; Cristina Ortega (El Balsero, Miami Film Festival) as Marisleysis González, Caleb Scott (Miami New Drama’s 7 Deadly Sins, CBS’ George and Tammy) as Al Gore and Donato Dalrymple, and Gaby Tortoledo (Murder on the Orient Express at Actors’ Playhouse, Cabaret) as various roles.

The creative team features direction by Michel Hausmann, associate direction by Tatiana Pandiani, assistant direction by Jessica Farr, scenic design by Christopher and Justin Swader, costume design by Christopher Vergara, lighting design by Kirk Bookman, sound design and composition by Salomon Lerner, projection design by Yana Biryukova, wig design by Carol Raskin, puppet design by Paul Louis, production stage manager Naomi Zapata and assistant production stage manager Katelyn Bourke.

ELIÁN runs October 27 – November 20 at the Colony Theatre (1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach) with an opening night scheduled for October 29th. Performances are scheduled Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 3 pm.
