Imagine the future. Set in 2050, Miami’s famed museum-park, the Deering Estate, has been converted into a residential complex made up of tenants who have been displaced or retreated from different parts of the world due to climate change. When rooms become available, they decide to host their first open house while re-opening partially as an art space after recent repairs.

The public is invited to visit the property and learn about their way of life. The personal lives and conflicts of the residents, and other strange phenomena, get in the way, and visitors must navigate scenes that explore notions of community, climate change empowerment, loss and love.

Conceived by Susan Caraballo, resident artist at Live Arts Miami and Deering Estate, written by Juan C. Sánchez and co-directed by Jennifer De Castroverde. Created in collaboration with over 30 Miami-based artists.

Prelude to 2100 consists of two experiential components: the TOUR and the OPEN HOUSE.

The TOUR provides audiences with an intimate walking tour of the complex and introduces many of its current residents through an immersive theatrical experience.
The free OPEN HOUSE in Deering Estate’s Courtyard features various interactive installations and performances by diverse Miami-based artists.

‘The Legacy’ by Manolo Valdés, his largest outdoor exhibition to date, opens to the public during Miami Art Week, Dec. 1-6 and will be featured in several locations in Doral until June 2021

An outstanding selection of more than a dozen larger-than life sculptures will be featured in Miami, the first exhibition of this magnitude with 12 locations and approximately 18 pieces. ‘Manolo Valdés: The Legacy’ will open in time for the celebration of Miami Art Week, with a public event at Doral Central Park on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at 11:00 a.m., all produced by the Doral Contemporary Art Museum (DORCAM).

In partnership with the City of Doral, the monumental sculptures will be installed in the main public parks of the City of Doral, including Doral Central Park, Downtown Doral Park, MAU Park, Morgan Levy Park, Doral Legacy Park and Doral Glades Park, as well as other selected locations. The Doral Contemporary Art Museum (DORCAM) exhibition will be the largest exhibition of his epic sculptures to date.

The exhibition will be on view for six months, until June 2021, with several programs organized around the exhibition throughout its duration, such as guided tours, educational programs for students, public workshops and lectures, photography competitions, pop-up exhibitions, performances, and the publication of a special-edition book, among others.

The sizable scale of this urban exhibition by one of the most influential artists of our times will transform the city into an experiential space and will put Miami-Dade County in the company of other great capitals, where the artist has also shown his monumental sculptures in public places. Additional support for this exhibition has been provided by the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Conversations at MOCA: Kelly Breez + Autumn Casey
Thursday, 10/22/2020-, 07:00 pm-
Website
Cost: Free

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to feature two South Florida artists – Autumn Casey and Kelly Breez – as part of its free, virtual “Conversations at MOCA” series on Oct. 22. The artists will be discussing stories their past, current and future work with MOCA North Miami’s Exhibitions and Project Manager Kevin Arrow.

The speakers include:

Kelly Breez is a multidisciplinary artist whose work chronicles the perfectly unholy attitude and landscape of South Florida, where the characters she grew up with left the decorum and prohibitions of elitist culture in the dust. She works in – and combines – illustration, sculpture, tufting, painting, and installation. She is currently in her second year as an Ambassador for the Vans Custom Culture program, and she recently completed a five-week residency at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, Colorado. Her work has been shown during Miami Art Week at NADA Art Fair, The Faena Forum and the Juxtapoz Clubhouse. She has a permanent installation at Facebook’s Miami offices, as part of their Artist in Residency Program. She is represented by Primary Projects in Miami, where her latest solo show, “Any Major Dude Will Tell You,” opened in October 2020. Breez holds a BFA from New World School of the Arts.

Autumn Casey draws on the ambiguity of personal memory and pop-cultural ephemera, to challenge and question her subjectivity against the world at large. Her practice, which moves from sculpture to collage, as well as video and performance, considers the history of the found object and assemblage – redeploying existing materials or moments in unexpected, idiosyncratic ways. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the New World School of the Arts, Miami, FL. She is represented by Primary (Miami) where she has had two solo exhibitions, and was selected to have a solo booth at Art Wynwood in 2015. Her work has also been included ingroup exhibitions at The Pérez Art Museum Miami, FL; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami, FL; Vox Populi, Philadelphia, PA; the Anne Bryan Gallery, Philadelphia, PA, among others. Her work is collected by the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, The Pérez Art Museum Miami and in private collections in Miami and New York City.

The events of the last two years have affected each individual in profound ways – and as we gather here at Miami Art Basel in 2021, this group exhibit seeks to provide space to confront the Hero’s Journey we all have been through during the last two years and to unite our collective consciousness. Each featured artists’ work addresses this ancient narrative arc in its own way – provoking us to reflect on our unique journeys of loss, grief, love, fear, changes, and healing. Collectively, the works seek to tune our collective unconscious, create space to unite and reflect on this time, and remind us that challenges help us actualize our higher potentials and transform us for the better.

Murray Hidary is a multi-disciplinary artist, musician, and tech pioneer, who creates provocative, improvisational, real-time MindTravel live piano performances, which take listeners on a deep inner journey through sound. He will be performing live for this event and exhibition, providing a transformational platform for us to experience this art, time, and space.

Los Angeles-based artist Kelley Anderson of Art Botanica has created a large-scale botanical installation ‘Love Knot’, which reinforces the importance of love over fear and love as the most powerful tool for healing. “The journey of Love takes twists and turns, often unexpected, but always returns back to Love, because “Love is the only truth.”

Daniel Dugan will be doing live performance art in which he creates art using “one continuous line” that never intersects and is equally spaced. Like labyrinths from centuries ago, the function is a spiritual one: to quiet the mind and wander forward through the path, knowing you will ultimately reach the end. Each work represents the flow of life with its unexpected twists and turns, each adding an unexpected value and balance.

Half-Japanese, Los Angeles-based Faith-Ann Young hangs large-scale ‘flags’ – photo collages printed onto various fabrics, in formations, and in the open air, to create colorful, transcendent spaces where humans can gather, engage and reflect. Her flag series, Cycles of Life, features a series of archetypes, symbols, and colors, provoking views to walk through, interact and embark on their own, unique transcendent journey within.

On March 24 at 7:00 p.m., MOCA will host “Conversations at MOCA: Electric Tree with Mark Handforth and Adler Guerrier,” virtually via Zoom. During the event, artists Mark Handforth and Adler Guerrier will speak about their art practice in the public realm. As artists who recently accomplished public art projects in North Miami, they will discuss their method of bringing a public art project to life. The conversation will take us through all the major steps of the process, from conceptual ideas to development and to working with curators, museums, and governmental agencies. Moderated by Dehja Carrington, she will drive the artists elaborate about their past, present, future projects and their process.

In addition to the conversation, MOCA will premiere Making of the Electric Tree, a short documentary produced by MOCA. The documentary highlights Mark Handforth’s journey to bring the Electric Tree public art project to north Miami.

Mark Handforth was born in Hong Kong in 1969 and grew up in England. He lives and works in Miami. Based in Miami for over 20 years, Mark Handforth is profoundly tied to the legacy of the 20th-century American avant-garde. He freely makes use of a formal vocabulary borrowed from Ready-Made, Minimalist, or Pop Art, which he confronts with an iconography often derived from the urban environment. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Art in Frankfurt and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He is internationally acclaimed for his installations in the public spaces. His large-scale sculptures have been displayed in Central Park in New York, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the MCA in Chicago, and during the FIAC offsite event in Paris. Mark Handforth has also received public commissions from the cities of Paris (Porte de Bagnolet) and Zurich (Tessinerplatz).

Adler Guerrier was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and currently resides and works in Miami, FL, where he received a BFA at the New World School of the Arts. Guerrier recently had a solo exhibition at Perez Art Museum Miami, Miami, FL. He has exhibited work at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Miami, FL; The Bass Museum of Art, Miami, FL; Harn Musem of Art, Gainesville, FL; and The Whitney Biennial 2008. His works can be found in public collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, NY. His work has appeared in Art Forum, Art in America, The New York Times, and ARTNews.

Dejha Carrington is the Vice President of External Relations & Communications of National YoungArts Foundation, a national organization that empowers artists to pursue a life in the arts. Carrington Also co-founded Commissioner, a membership program dedicated to helping everyday people build their art collection with local artists. In addition to her leadership roles, Carrington has consulted for arts and cultural, social profits, private collections, cities, and global social responsibility initiatives, including the William John Kennedy Collection with The Warhol museum, the Renzo Piano Pavilion at Kimbell Art Museum, and the Medellin Biennial in Colombia. In 2015, Dejha co-created the public art installation NEWT: Experiments in Light, Color & Sound; and is a founding partner of FADE TO BLACK, one of the first and most celebrated platforms for artists of color during Art Basel Miami Beach week. A recognized media source and speaker on communications, arts advocacy, and cultural programming, Dejha was born and raised in Montreal. She is fluent in French and English and calls Miami her home.

Sharing the Love, a powerful and engaging family show by the Studio 305, Home of the Rolle project!

Rolle, Studio 305, and special guests from Las Vegas and Diva Arts Dance Academy (comprised of Miami, Florida students pursuing the arts) in a collaborative performance presentation. The Rolle Project is producing a new production titled, “Sharing the Love,” featuring professional and aspiring youth of Studio 305, Home of the Rolle Project and our guest performers from Las Vegas and Diva Arts Miami. Our goal is to change the view on performing arts in the community. Studio 305 under the umbrella of The Rolle Project provides technical training to at risk children and exposing them to learning the fundamentals of being a professional performer.

Purposed to unite and uplift BIPOC student performance artists while promoting self-confidence and positive self-image through dance, mentoring, and acting, this inspiringly powerful and culturally diverse dance arts exchange cultivates an enhanced knowledge and awareness expanding individual artistic abilities while providing the community with educative entertainment and public service.

With a focus on showing at risk and underprivileged students that the arts have no limits. Showcasing history, culture, and inclusion in hopes of creating a more accepting and diverse future for our youth. Giving back to the community now in order to inspire someone to give back later on. Uplifting and encouraging while also teaching the youth discipline, societal skills, and personal wellness.

Late Night is back! Named Best Classical Music Experience by Miami New Times, our concert meets night club mashup includes club-style lighting and art videos. Stand up close and groove alongside the performers or arrive early to immerse your senses in the late-night lounge vibe from a seat upstairs. Composer Olga Neuwirth creates a “songplay in nine fits” in honor of her childhood idol Klaus Nomi, the glamorous German countertenor and queer icon who transformed the New York art world. Stepping into the shoes of the iconic singer who was a staple of New York nightclubs in the 70s is Jake Arditti. He’ll tackle Nomi’s pop songs and opera arias with sampled back-up vocals and a full orchestra. Join us to hear the fabulous music that went on to influence Bowie, Basquiat and Lady Gaga.

Please note: Late Night at NWS ticketholders must be 21+ in age. Upon arrival, all attendees must provide valid ID at the door and pass security screenings to enter.

While NFTs have dominated the discourse around art this year, everything about them feels opaque. How to obtain, define, and conserve NFTs are still confusing matters for many. To get to the bottom of things PAMM’s Director of Digital Engagement will moderate a panel with artist Sofia Crespo, curator Dr. Tina Rivers Ryan, and Art Blocks CCO Jeff Davis. The panel will discuss how NFTs have changed the practice of digital art, where NFTs sit in the broader tradition of digital art, and where this all might beheaded.

(Virtual) Miami Champagne Week Day 2: The Art of Perrier-Jouët

Join us for Day 2 of Miami Champagne Week to experience champagne from one of the region’s most unique Houses, Maison Perrier-Jouët. The House was founded by two independent-minded free spirits who shared a passion for art and nature – and a bold vision for champagne.

Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Rose-Adélaïde Jouët founded Maison Perrier-Jouët in 1811 with a desire to create a Champagne House with a difference. They selected Chardonnay as the signature grape of Maison Perrier-Jouët, elevating it from a little-used grape variety to the cornerstone of the world-renowned intricate, floral style of Perrier-Jouët champagne. Their attachment to the terroir, unconventional vision of champagne and belief in creativity redefined the history of champagne.

Alessandra Esteves, DipWSET, MW candidate, Director of Wine Education for Florida Wine Academy, will co-host the Webinar with Perrier-Jouët Champagne Ambassador Elise Cordell.

We will taste the following champagnes:
Champagne Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut
Champagne Perrier-Jouët Brut Blason Rosé
Champagne Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Edition Premiere 2007

Date: October 14th, 2020, from 6pm to 7.30pm

It all started when Swensen’s Grill and Ice Cream Parlor closed its doors during the pandemic after being open for 44 years serving the Coral Gables community. The beloved restaurant had a beautiful history we did not want to let go of.

Our team has crafted a fantastic menu and its familial hospitality will make you feel warm and welcomed. Re: American Heritage Schools to Host its Annual “K-9 Cause: An Evening of Art” Auction 4/20/24

Re: American Heritage Schools to Host its Annual “K-9 Cause: An Evening of Art” Auction
Saturday, 04/20/2024-, 05:30 pm-09:00 pm
American Heritage Schools – Broward Campus

Plantation, Florida, 33325
Website
Cost: $20 online and $25 at the door

American Heritage Schools [ahschool.com], the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school in Florida, is proud to announce its annual “K-9 Cause: An Evening of Art” auction benefiting the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation’s Retired Canine Relief Fund, on Saturday, April 20.

Everyone loves dogs; however, police dogs, or K-9s, are a special breed. Instead of enjoying the pampered pet lifestyle, K-9s dedicate their entire lives to working daily to protect and serve citizens in our community along with their fearless handlers. They are considered law enforcement officers, whose duties include constant training, apprehending suspects, and searching for explosives, drugs, and missing persons.

When the K-9s retire, their law enforcement handlers graciously adopt them and continue to care for them, as these K-9s have become their friends for life. Recognizing that the medical and healthcare for these K-9s can get quite costly, the Broward Sheriff’s Foundation has established the Retired K-9 Healthcare Fund. This Fund pays for up to 50% of the wellness care costs for all retired K-9s from any local law enforcement agency in Broward County.

Inspired by a little boy’s passion for animals and art, American Heritage Schools is raising money to “fund this fund” by selling artistic renditions of these fine K-9s. Jackson Laurie, a sophomore at American Heritage Schools, and his parents Dr. Douglas Laurie and Nikki Laurie-Van Allen have partnered with the National Art Honor Society and the award-winning Fine Arts faculty at American Heritage to create artwork of these very K-9 being honored.

American Heritage Schools, Broward Campus, will be hosting a Silent Auction for these original works of art, as well as a limited supply of prints for sale at our K-9 Cause event. 100% of all funds raised from this event will benefit the Broward Sheriff Foundation’s Retired K-9 Relief Fund.

OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Miami, internationally acclaimed as one of the largest LGBTQ+ cultural festivals in the world, will open its 24th edition with the first Florida live screening of “B-Boy Blues” (2021) at The Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater on April 22 at 7 p.m. Producer Circle members and filmmakers will enjoy a 5:30 p.m. pre-event Filmmakers Soirée. The film will be followed by a live Q & A and an opening night party featuring cast from the film, filmmakers and Vanguard honoree Venezuelan actress, model, and philanthropist Patricia Velásquez.

“B-Boy Blues” USA (2021), is an African American romantic comedy-drama based on the 1994 groundbreaking, and beloved classic book by James Earl Hardy. Class and culture clash when Mitchell, a college-educated journalist from Brooklyn, and Raheim, a homeboy-bike messenger from Harlem, fall in love. Despite his friends’ misgivings and several red flags, Mitchell is enraptured by the incredibly sexy and smooth Raheim, but the repercussions of their mutual obsession will affect his work, friendships, and family. Described as “Moonlight” meets “Queer As Folk,” this unapologetic celebration of African American gay men will leave you wanting more. The film stars Timothy Richardson, Thomas Mackie, Brandee Evans, Landon G. Woodson, Ledisi and Heather B. “B-Boy Blues” was the recipient of the 2021 Narrative Feature Fan Favorite at American Black Film Festival and an official selection of Queer Screen’s Mardi Gras Fil Festival 2022.

An opening night party will also follow the film with guest of honor and Vanguard Award winner Patricia Velásquez. Velásquez is best known for her portrayal of Anck-su-namun in “The Mummy” (1990) and its sequel, “The Mummy Returns” (2001). She has appeared in numerous other films including “The Curse of La Llorona” (2019) and television shows including “Arrested Development” and “The L Word.” She is the founder of the Wayuu Taya Foundation which is dedicated to aiding Venezuelans struggling along the Colombian border. She was appointed the UNESCO Artist for Peace and is a Goodwill Ambassador at the Organization of the American States.

Continuing its mission to unite the community through premier social events and programs that inspire, entertain, educate and encourage a sense of community, this year’s festival features more than 45 international features and documentary screenings, panel discussions, three shorts programs, exclusive virtual showings, Cocktails & Cinema Happy Hours and parties that will take place across various venues in Miami-Dade County through May 1.

OUTshine special events of note also include the Ladies Spotlight Film, “Anaïs in Love” (2021), the South Florida premiere of the festival Centerpiece film “Girl Picture (Työt Työt Työt)” (2022) and the Men’s Spotlight film “Lonesome” (2021) plus the North American premieres of “All Our Fears” (2021) and “Swing Ride (Calcinculo)” (2022) and the U.S. premiere of “What We Know (Lo Que Sabemos)” (2021). Festival Closing night will feature “Cop Secret” (2021) and OUTshine’s annual audience film awards soiree on May 1 at 6 p.m. at the Sandrell Rivers Theater.

OUTrageous, OUTspoken, and OUTstanding, the 24th annual OUTshine Film Festival Miami is presented by Lexus, Gilead and Miami-Dade County.

Due to the pandemic’s impact, Art Basel announces the cancellation of its 2020 Miami Beach fair

PRESS STATEMENT
MIAMI BEACH | SEPTEMBER 2 | 2020

Due to the pandemic’s impact, Art Basel announces the cancellation of its Miami Beach fair

Given the current situation regarding the pandemic’s impact, which spans from South Florida to other parts of the country and the world; limitations and uncertainty about the staging of large-scale events; international travel restrictions and bans, as well as quarantine regulations within the United States and internationally, alongside other factors, Art Basel has no other option but to cancel the 2020 edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach. Art Basel in Miami Beach was scheduled to take place from December 3 to December 6, 2020 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Noah Horowitz, Director Americas, Art Basel said: ‘It is with great regret and disappointment that we announce the cancellation of our December show in Miami Beach, as we know how crucial our show is for our galleries, as well as for the greater Miami arts community and economy. We thank everyone who shared their perspectives and insights with us over the past months and weeks and look forward to returning to Miami Beach next year to deliver a successful show.’

As the artworld continues to face momentous challenges, Art Basel remains firmly committed to supporting the global gallery community in the best way possible through its digital initiatives and by hosting its upcoming 2021 shows in Hong Kong, Basel, and Miami Beach. Art Basel’s digital initiatives will continue this fall with two individual thematic editions of its Online Viewing Rooms: ‘OVR:2020’, dedicated to artworks produced during 2020 and running from September 23 to 26, and ‘OVR:20c’, presenting works created between 1900 and 1999 from October 28 to 31. These digital events will be followed in December by Online Viewing Rooms that will be open to all galleries accepted to the 2020 edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach. Further details on the upcoming Online Viewing Rooms will follow in the coming weeks.

As has been communicated previously, galleries selected for Art Basel in Miami Beach 2020 will not be charged any participation/booth fees for the December show and application fees will be rolled over to 2021 for accepted galleries.

The next edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach will take place from December 2 to December 5, 2021, with preview days on December 1 and December 2, 2021.

The Center is reaching out to local performing artists who have an ongoing relationship with the center to perform a three to five-minute video performance that will be broadcast through the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center’s Facebook page.

SMDCAC will provide a guaranteed fee to each artist who participates as well as a call-to-action for audiences to donate to the artist or their cause during the performance.

The performer of the night is Albert Castiglia. Never content to allow himself to be confined to any particular category, Castiglia embarked on a solo career that’s yielded nine critically acclaimed albums and consist kudos for his exceptional instrumental prowess, his searing vocals, and live performances that have dazzled audiences from coast to coast. It’s little wonder that Miami’s New Times lauded him as South Florida’s “Best Blues Guitarist” or that USA Today was inspired to remark “It’s a revelation to discover the thrilling retro-electric blues from this astonishing young guitarist.”
