In the ever-evolving world of contemporary art, few exhibitions stand out as truly original and unmissable, but Politics’ latest solo exhibition achieves precisely that. This artist, known for breaking traditional boundaries, has unveiled a collection that defies convention, combining cubism, abstract, and surrealism across three series that explore the depths of artistic expression.
Each series in Politics’ exhibition pushes the envelope, blending familiar styles in unexpected ways on tridimensional surfaces. The artist’s innovative approach offers a fresh perspective on cubism, where sharp geometric shapes collide with fluidity, merging into abstract forms that twist perception. The added layer of surrealism pulls viewers into an almost dreamlike state, where the impossible feels tangible and the imagination knows no bounds.
By incorporating a tridimensional surface as the canvas, Politics introduces a new frontier for modern art. The interplay of shape, color, and depth invites viewers to step into each piece, creating a multisensory experience that transforms traditional gallery viewing. The surfaces themselves act as sculptures, morphing from painting to object, demanding interaction and challenging the boundaries between mediums.
In this highly anticipated show, Politics brings an entirely new vision to life, masterfully blending cubism’s structural deconstruction with the emotional freedom of abstract art and the enigmatic narrative quality of surrealism. The result is an exhibition that is not just visually striking but also conceptually groundbreaking. Each work serves as an entry point into a world where style and genre converge, creating something wholly new—a genre of its own that can only be described as Politics’ signature.
Art enthusiasts and collectors alike will not want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience an artist at the height of creative innovation. Politics’ fusion of styles, paired with their distinctive tridimensional approach, makes this exhibition a must-see for anyone looking to witness the future of contemporary art.

“While speaking with other sneaker collectors, it was brought to my attention that there was no real presence of a sneaker community represented here in Miami,” said Jewell. “I also believe that sneakers, fashion, and art go hand-in-hand, and should be recognized on a larger scale. This is my humble attempt to integrate the sneaker world with the art world.”

About Harden Project Duo

The Harden Project consists of vocalist Ja’Nia Harden and keyboardist John Harden II. Their influences include Bobby McFerrin, Dinah Washington, Al Jarreau, Jimmy Smith, Robert Glasper, Soulive, and Bobby Floyd. The couple blends their influences and life experiences to create soulful groovy sometimes enchanting compositions. They are not afraid of being transparent and open while performing. The goal of the project is to bring soul-stirring, emotion-provoking, life-influenced music to the world and features fusion-based music of all genres, heavily influenced by jazz, social music, and soul.

The Historical Legacy of Juneteenth

On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took place. On that night, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in the Confederate States were declared legally free. Union soldiers, many of whom were black, marched onto plantations and across cities in the South reading small copies of the Emancipation Proclamation and spreading the news of freedom in Confederate States. Only through the Thirteenth Amendment did emancipation end slavery throughout the United States. Not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as “Juneteenth,” by the newly freed people in Texas. Juneteenth marks our country’s second independence day. Although it has long been celebrated in the African American community, this monumental event remains largely unknown to most Americans. Sourced from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture.

Through the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA)’s continued efforts to include diverse voices and perspectives, the museum is offering a robust series of educational programming this July.

On view through Oct. 1, 2023, “Lonnie Holley: If You Really Knew” invites visitors to experience the work of prolific artist Lonnie Holley in his first major exhibition in the South. Also on view is the “South Florida Cultural Consortium” (SFCC) exhibition which showcases the work of 12 intergenerational South Florida artists.

“Lonnie Holley: If You Really Knew” provides an intimate and focused look at the career of Birmingham, Alabama-born artist and musician Lonnie Holley. The exhibition, curated by MOCA curator Adeze Wilford, features 70 works including foundational “sandstone” sculptures, new works on paper and large-scale quilt paintings that depict faces. Known for his unique style of art that draws inspiration from his life experiences, Holley often incorporates found objects and everyday materials, which he transforms into thought-provoking art. Holley’s influence on Southern art is highlighted throughout “If You Only Knew,” including a section he curated featuring works from artists such as Miami native Purvis Young, Thornton Dial, Mary T. Smith and Hawkins Bowling.

The “South Florida Cultural Consortium” (SFCC) exhibition brings together 12 artists working across various media including, sculpture, film and site-specific installations. The exhibition, this year hosted and organized by MOCA, provides a snapshot of the breadth and depth of the artistic talent in the South Florida art scene.

On view outside the museum through late August is MOCA’s most recent “Art on the Plaza” commission, LIZN’BOW (Liz Ferrer and Bow Ty)’s “El Mundo Es Mágico.” The sculpture, “El Mundo Es Mágico,” features displaced queer characters in a mix of reality and fantasy within Miami iconography, inviting conversations of fluidity, gender, class and identity. Central to the duo’s work is the feminist reimagining of each element towards a more inclusive, fantastical worldview.

Cost: 30

MAPP (Mentorship, Advocacy, Purpose and the Power of women) is the non-
profit organization dedicated to empowering women in the culinary and
hospitality industry. On Tuesday, April 2 the organization will return to Miami for
the red carpet premiere of filmmaker Joanna James’ exploration and celebration
of women in the culinary industry in the award-winning film, A Fine Line. Taking
place at Miami Beach’s Regal Cinema, the event will be part of a day-long series
of events focused on creating a culture of self-worth and respect for women in or
looking to build a life in the restaurant industry.

The film premiere itself will take place at 7:30PM, followed by an all-star panel
discussion featuring local and national female culinary stars including Dominique
Crenn, who stars in the film and is the only three Michelin star female chef in the
U.S. Joining her will be chefs Eileen Andrade, Lorena Garcia, Karla Hoyos,
Dayanny De La Cruz, Suzanne Baer and Karina Rivera. Tickets for the film and
panel are $30 per person.

For those looking to expand their opportunity to learn and further engage with
MAPP, there will be a mini-conference earlier that day, starting at 3:30PM at
Santorini by Georgios. Industry leaders will delve into the theme of “Creating a
Culture of Respect,” featuring rotating workshops and discussions on self-worth
including financial independence, so female professionals feel their voices are
heard. There will be an appetizer, wine and cocktail reception for attendees to
meet each other while also having the opportunity to speak with their industry
heroes leading panel conversations.

In addition to being the CEO and founder of MAPP, James is the director and
producer of the award-winning film that had its national broadcast premiere on
PBS, A Fine Line. The film became a rallying call for greater gender equality in
professional kitchens and the building blocks to what MAPP is today.
The April 2nd event will be its official cinematic release in Miami.

“It’s full circle not only bringing the film I made on creating gender equality in the
hospitality industry to Miami, the hub of nightlife and epic restaurants, but also
the non-profit born from it MAPP, hosting its annual conference here,” said
James. This time women will get to see themselves and our universal stories on
the big screen to ask ourselves how we can shape a future where respect,
equality and empowerment thrive.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit the 501c3 non-profit MAPP, dedicated to
empowering women into leadership roles. This even was made possible by our
sponsors: PepsiCo, Delta Air Lines, Dough Wines, Markham Napa Valley
Vineyards.

Deseo, an original Flamenco work, inspired by Tennessee Williams’ Streetcar Named Desire, uses Flamenco music and dance as a language to tell the iconic story of one of the most critically acclaimed American plays of the 20th Century. With some of the most engaging characters in American Theatre, Tennessee Williams’ sensuous and emotional work centers around troubled former schoolteacher Blanche DuBois, who leaves small-town Mississippi and moves in with her sister, Stella Kowalski, and her husband, Stanley, in New Orleans. Blanche’s flirtatious Southern-belle presence causes problems for Stella and Stanley, who already have a volatile relationship. This sets the stage for intense drama, as each of the characters fights his or her demons and struggles to escape the world around them, in a violent storm of frustrated dreams, poetry, love, passion, illusion and cruelty.

Johannesburg artist William Kentridge’s performance piece Ursonate, will be on view at NSU Art Museum, with screenings during museum hours, every hour on the half hour, 11:30 am to 3:30 pm. Based on dada artist Kurt Schwitters 1932 sound poem Ursonate, consisting entirely of a nonsense, invented language, Kentridge’s work is comprised of two film projections: one in which the artist emphatically gesticulates as he sounds the score accompanied by an opera singer and percussionist, while a constant flow of animated caligraphic images drawn by Kentridge are projected on the second screen. This exhibition coincides with the performance of Kentridge’s opera The Head & The Load at the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, Miami (December 1-3, 2022).

The distinguished eight-time Grammy winner invites guest artists Daymé Arocena, Telmary and Aymée Nuviola to share center stage!
Live Arts Miami is proud to present the debut performance of Arturo O’Farrill and his 18-piece Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO) at the Miami Beach Bandshell on October 21 at 8 p.m. Boasting an amazing lineup of guest artists including Daymé Arocena, Telmary and Aymée Nuviola; this electrifying show will bring the best of Cuban music to Miami Beach for an unforgettable evening of nostalgia, mambo and of course, Latin jazz.

Son of the legendary Cuban composer, Chico O’Farill, Arturo is the creative force leading New York’s treasured Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. A pianist, composer and passionate promoter of Latin music, Arturo O’Farrill’s music has been enjoyed around the world and earned him and his bandmates eight GRAMMYs, including his most recent win in 2023 for Best Jazz Album. Arturo O’Farrill is regarded as one of the greatest living exponents of the Latin jazz form and a torchbearer for the tradition.

The award-winning Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra has enamored international audiences with its outstanding performances of music by Latin jazz legends as well as new compositions from accomplished composers and arrangers in Latin music. New Yorker magazine has called them “one of the best jazz orchestras in existence.” During the last several years ALJO has performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Boston Symphony Hall, the Newport Jazz Festival among others. Legendary pianist Bebo Valdes once remarked “This is the finest band I have ever performed with in my life. They make me feel as if I have returned to Cuba.”

To mark the occasion of this Miami debut, Arturo has invited three extraordinary Cuban divas to join him on the stage. The singer and bandleader Daymé Arocena, best known for her massive voice, has invited comparisons to Aretha Franklin and Celia Cruz. Telmary is a poet and rapper who is a leader and trendsetter on the cutting edge of Cuban hip-hop and urban music. Miami’s own Aymée Nuviola, known as “La Sonera Del Mundo,” is one of the founders of the “Timba” genre who was also named one of the 25 most powerful Latina women in the United States in 2021 by People en Español.

The Miami premiere of this concert will be the first time that this incredible gathering of artists happens anywhere in the world, which is both notable and fitting, considering Miami Beach’s long history with big band music and Miami’s role in Latin music. The Miami Beach Bandshell, as its name would imply, was constructed for big bands, making it the perfect location for this special concert event which both honors and continues that legacy. Audiences will get to experience iconic Cuban big band music with breathtaking arrangements of “The Manteca Suite,” “Afro Cuban Jazz Suite” as well as new compositions and arrangements that will transport audiences to some of Cuba’s greatest musical moments.

As a major advocate for educating the next generation, Arturo will also arrive early to Miami to lead workshops with students from Miami Dade College and New World School of the Arts.

A celebration that’s 40+ years in the making takes flight at Zoo Miami on Sunday, February 25 with Orchestra Miami’s performance of Camille Saint-Saëns’s 1886 suite, Le Carnaval des Animaux (Carnival of Animals). For Elaine Rinaldi, Orchestra Miami’s artistic director, this performance is deeply personal.

In 1982, at the age of 14, Elaine Rinaldi made her soloist debut as a pianist with the Ft. Lauderdale Chamber Orchestra performing Carnival of Animals at what was then the newly opened Miami Metro Zoo. Even at that young age, Elaine knew that she wanted to recreate that event and allow other promising young artists to perform locally with a professional orchestra. Forty-two years later, her dream becomes a reality. “This concert is a full circle moment for me, and it’s perfect for Orchestra Miami’s ‘Discover Miami Through Music’ series, which I started in 2014. You can’t perform this suite without duo pianists, so I’m especially pleased to be giving two young piano soloists the rare opportunity to perform with a professional orchestra,” said Rinaldi.

Orchestra Miami will offer two performances of the humorous musical suite of fourteen movements, each representing an animal. They are honored to have Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava narrating the 11 AM performance while Conservationist, Ron Magill, will narrate the 1 PM performance. Maestro Rinaldi will be conducting the performances, and the piano soloists are Elisabeth Thomashoff originally from Vienna, Austria, and Aneliya Novikova originally from Voronezh, Russia; both 21 or younger and still students at the Lynn Conservatory of Music. Running approximately 45 minutes each, both shows are free to the public with the purchase of a Zoo Miami ticket. Before this performance, a special free “preview” performance will take place at the Coral Gables Museum on Family Day on Aragon, Saturday, February 10 at 1 PM.

“I’m excited to be a part of Orchestra Miami’s Carnival of Animals. It is certainly one of Camille Saint Sans’ most beautiful works. From the first note to the last, it’s got everything — excitement, eccentric ideas, and instrumentation that competes with playfulness, elegance, and science. This musical suite and Zoo Miami is the perfect marriage,” said Ron Magill. The animals depicted in Carnival of the Animals are lions, hens/roosters, tortoises, elephants, and kangaroos, to name a few. It will also feature The Swan, one of the most famous and recognizable pieces in all of music history. This performance will also include Ottorino Respighi’s The Birds, which is based on music from the 17th and 18th centuries and represents an attempt to transcribe birdsong into musical notation, illustrating bird actions, such as fluttering wings, or scratching feet.

“Saint-Saëns wrote this suite for fun in February 1886 and then prohibited anyone from listening to it until 1922. 102 years later, this is still one of his most enduring and fun compositions. What better way to enjoy this whimsical piece about animals than among the animals,” said Rinaldi.
