Mount Gay Rum had a party at the Ritz Carlton in Key Biscayne two nights ago. I was in attendance with one of my friends and bumped into a few notable names. Let’s start with my bosses from Soul of Miami, James and Annette. James only wanted to know if I could be backup with the pics since his camera is on the fritz. I’ve got you covered, James!
No rum event is complete without an appearance by Rob Burr, and this was no exception. Rob let us know that this new Black Barrel Rum was a return to fine Barbados rum from a distiller that has a long history doing just that. Oh, and the rum was really good too.
Hope you like my photos! I love you guys!

Wynwood Art Group (#WWAG) is the result of the recent merger of Brazilian artists, headed by Hamilton Aguiar, with Gallery 212 Miami and Miami (art) Publicist. Gallery 212 Miami’s NY-native Pop Artist Michael Perez is partnered with Miami Publicist Caitlin E. Slayback and they have spearheaded an innovative program to provide a platform for emerging, mid-career and professional artists by managing monthly exhibitions that feature fine art, photography, design, sculpture and even live performance. With a unique gallery business plan, Wynwood Art Group is essentially the result of this merger; a group of fine artists with great achievement in their careers forming a group to share ideas and to work with strategic marketing to create supportive platforms for artists. Wynwood Art Group embodies the dedicated interest of its members in contributing to the formation and the history that will eventually be remembered by the here-and-now crowd as the significant art and cultural movement of Wynwood.
The gallery has been in business for 4 years in this location and this year was awarded 4th place by the Local Top 10 at [Channel] 10 voter’s poll of top local businesses. The building has been newly renovated and expanded into a multi-use space now encompassing the entire corner of NW 24th and NW 2nd Avenue in the heart of Miami’s Wynwood art gallery district. The neighborhood is famous for its art walls, attracting visitors from around the world who come to view and photograph them. The Wynwood Art Group building boasts a new and fantastic mural on NW 24th Street by Brazilian WWAG artist Rogério Fernandes. In the last ten years the almost completely abandoned warehouse district of downtown Miami has developed and blossomed into an art hub and the authentic gallery district that attracts masses of enthusiastic art lovers to its monthly Second Saturday art walks and annual Art Basel Miami; satellite fair to Art Basel, Switzerland and the largest, most successful and longest-running international art fair in the United States.

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Deferred Archive Awards Grants & Commissions Exhibition Opening
August 28th
Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation
1018 North Miami Avenue
Miami, FL 33136
The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) is proud to announce Deferred Archive as this year’s Grants & Commissions Program exhibition. As it is customary, the winners are part of the annual exhibition dedicated to the program at the CIFO Art Space. This year’s exhibition will open to the public from August 28th to October 27th.
The tenth edition of CIFO’s Grants & Commissions Program features newly commissioned works by Jorge Mendez Blake (Mexico), Milena Bonilla (Colombia), Miguel Calderon (Mexico), Antonio Caro (Colombia), Benvenuto Chavajay (Guatemala), José Gabriel Fernandez (Venezuela), Sofia Olascoaga (Mexico), Manuela Ribadeneira (Ecuador), Laureana Toledo (Mexico) and Santiago Villanueva (Argentina).
Deferred Archive refers to the idea that memory is constructed retrospectively – not from past to future, but from future to past, so that the events that we experience are not fixed in time, but fleeting from one subject to the other.
In Hal Foster’s Return of the Real, he looks to Freudian theory of deferred action to recover psychoanalysis as a model to understand how we construct the history of avant-garde art. According to Foster, Freud’s theory of deferred action is seen as an event that is recorded as traumatic when a subsequent event retroactively recodes it. Foster, in turn, proposes that the significance of the events of the avant-garde occurs in a similar way by a complex alternation of anticipation and reconstruction. Thus we see what happens when artists work with the idea of the archive. The archive becomes a distinct model in understanding how memory is constructed.
The idea of the deferred archive represents the artist looking back, activating past events and classifying them in order to understand a particular moment, as if revisiting the event with the perspective of today gives it the opportunity to really exist; a type of documentation that allows for memory to be created within the now – or, memory according to a later experience. The artist uses this model as a way of recognizing that memory is always something in the making. By looking to the past, the artists participating in CIFO’s 2013 Grants & Commissions Program are not searching for a memory, but rather creating a memory through documentation/archiving. The act of post-event documentation (or belated documentation) therefore becomes the deferred archive.
“CIFO remains committed to maintaining investment and supporting contemporary artists from Latin America,†said CIFO Founder Ella Fontanals-Cisneros. “In the tenth edition of the Grants & Commissions Program, we are very proud to honor this year’s award recipients who are creating some of the most challenging and innovative work today. These awards serve as a testament to the artists’ skill, creativity and vision.â€
CIFO’s Grants & Commissions Program offers opportunities to up to six emerging and three mid- career contemporary artists from Latin America as well as an annual Achievement award, recognizing the contributions of established artists who would benefit from significant international exposure and recognition. The funds awarded in the Grants and Commissions program are given directly to the selected artists in order to develop their pieces, providing more flexibility for the artist. The artists are nominated each year by CIFO’s Honorary Advisory Committee of leading art professionals, curators and artists from Latin America, the United States, and Europe. After a rigorous review process, the recipients are chosen by the Selection Committee and ratified by CIFO’s Board of Directors. Having already benefitted over a hundred artists during its ten years, the Program has been known to springboard recipients into the next level of their careers.
This year, CIFO has partnered with Cannonball, an Artist Residency based in Downtown Miami, to award one of the artists in the Grants & Commissions Program with a two month residency. CIFO’s Board of Directors selected Benvenuto Chavajay from Guatemala for the residency where he will spend the months leading up to the exhibition focusing on creating his project.

Funding for this nonprofit program was made possible through the Love One Another Foundation represented by Cousin’s Law of West Palm Beach.
Twelve performances are now being scheduled ranging from Summer 2013 to Spring 2014, in which participating organizations will have the opportunity to promote their causes. “We bring our actors and plays for free or for a small donation to host sites†Kamysha Martin, Executive Director of ARTfusion Delray, said. “The stage serves a platform for interaction. Each play allows the audience members to be a part of the host’s organization message and/or chime in on the topicâ€. Organizations are being urged to call and reserve a date as soon as possible for Theatrical Fusion booking. “We are very pleased with the reception of this program, but yes, there are still a handful of more opportunities left on the scheduleâ€, says Ms. Martin.
In partnership with the Global Business Development Center, the program is purposely designed to create jobs by hiring local actors, create social change by discussing serious topics, and assist community partners through community outreach. “We are doing a second round actors call, requesting submission and in person auditions are being scheduled,†Martin said. The program also brings in subject matter experts to facilitate discussion on topics including bullying, cyber stalking, domestic violence, teen dating violence, financial education, substance abuse, teen pregnancy prevention, healthy choices, HIV/AIDS, parenting and topics specific to the aging community and their families.
ARTfusion Delray’s mission is to utilize the ARTS for social change.

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation – CIFO – Presents Deferred Archives
Sunday, 08/28/2013 – 10/27/2013 10:00 am –
CIFO Space
1018 North Miami Avenue ,
Miami, Florida 33136
More Info Link
Cost: Free Admission
The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) is proud to announce Deferred Archive as this year’s Grants & Commissions Program exhibit. As it is customary, the winners are part the annual exhibition dedicated to the Program at the CIFO Art Space. This year’s exhibit will open on August 28th.
Deferred Archive refers to the idea that memory is constructed retrospectively – not from past to future, but from future to past, so that events that we experience are not fixed in time, but fleeting from one subject to the other.
The archive is a distinct model in understanding how memory is constructed.
By looking to the past, the artists participating in CIFO’s 2013 Grants & Commissions Program are not looking for a memory, but rather creating a memory through documentation/archiving. The act of post-event documentation (or belated documentation) therefore becomes the deferred archive.
Spinello Projects Presents a Solo Project by Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares Grand Opening
Saturday, July 13th, 7 – 10 PM
Spinello Projects
2930 NW 7th Avenue
Miami, FL 33127.
Spinello Projects is pleased to present the grand opening of State of the Book, an interactive installation from multidisciplinary artists Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares. Wright and Millares transform the gallery entrance into the façade of a bookstore storefront. Behind the glass doors is an interactive reading room where visitors may sit, read and physically engage with books borrowed from the Miami-Dade Public Library System, private collections and the artists’ own bookshelves. The Florida heat in the summer becomes a New England winter – an invitation to retreat indoors to think.
The work considers the devaluation of the printed book in a society plagued by rising budget cuts to the arts and education, successive shutdowns of mom-and-pop bookstores and public libraries, and the rise of the e-book. It is the artists’ hope that the room will generate a dialogue around the changing role of books in contemporary culture, but also furthering a love of reading centered around and within the act of community-building. In addition to regular gallery hours, ongoing programming will activate the space for the duration of the exhibition. Wright and Millares will conclude the exhibition run with a live performance.
The sad, strange, beautiful vulnerability and (sometimes) painful faces of the human condition are all considerations in the oeuvre of Miami-based artists Antonia Wright and longtime collaborator Ruben Millares. Investigating the various politics and comic facets of natural behaviors both unique and routine, Wright and Millares examine these elements through a multifarious, process-oriented practice combining video, performance, photography, poetry, sound and sculpture. Wright and Millares acknowledge the layers of societal taboos and barriers between their artistic choices, and pointedly pushes them into the visual arts realm for the viewer to regard, question and/or enjoy.

David Castillo Gallery presents Lost Boys: Dogan Arslanoglu and Johnny Laderer Reception
Saturday, July 13, 7 – 11 pm
David Castillo Gallery
2234 NW 2nd Avenue
Miami, FL 33127
David Castillo Gallery presents Lost Boys: DoÄŸan ArslanoÄŸlu & Johnny Laderer, curated by Claudia Mattos.
Lost Boys contends with autobiographical space; a type of space, both physical and not, defined by personal experience.
ArslanoÄŸlu’s photography and Laderer’s sculpture appropriate mundane imagery and materials to map personal and memorial experience. They create actual and aspirational sites, charting when, where, and with whom they have been. Articulated within these spaces is a nostalgia evidenced in location: a sense of home, particularly situated in Florida. The pieces in this show function as souvenirs, commemorating and bearing witness to times past and present. This is a cartographic exercise of identity.
Drawing a reference to Peter Pan’s Lost Boys, the show focuses on an exploration of youth and masculinity to draw out a notion of memory, experience, and home; in the end, the Lost Boys find home.
ArslanoÄŸlu approaches his subjects with a vernacularism that renders them placeless. These are images of his immediate surroundings and experiences; he is the unpictured subject of every scene. And this imagery becomes a log of sorts, charting the places — the friends, girlfriends, and experiences — where his camera has followed. He maps a personal narrative. Free from identifying markers, these images could have been taken anywhere.
Johnny Laderer, Personal Best 1, 2013.
Laderer’s practice departs from a more value-laden note: he creates work with found or discarded objects, or (put more simply) junk. The road is imperative to Laderer’s collecting of objects and ideas, and his materials reference his movement throughout the state. He is a magpie, claiming trophies along the way. Laderer’s is a practice of re-creating, re-staging, and re-claiming his and Florida’s past.
ArslanoÄŸlu’s and Laderer’s objects serve as the spaces for memory, allowing glimpses into a greater mapping of personal experience. And they are Lost Boys insofar as they attempt to find home, wherever (or whomever or whenever) that may be.
DoÄŸan ArslanoÄŸlu received his BFA from Florida International University in 2012. In the spring of 2013 ArslanoÄŸlu participated in the Wassaic Artist Residency in Wassaic, NY, and this fall he will be starting his MFA in photography at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY.
Johnny Laderer received his BFA from Florida State University in 2009. Laderer has participated in group shows at the Hollywood Art and Culture Center, Hollywood, FL; Miami Beach Urban Studios, Miami Beach, FL; among others. Both artists live and work in Miami, FL.

Henry Stone is back with the Booty! The newest release from Henry Stone Music – “Booty Shakin’ Time” – recalls the first “Shake Your Booty” almost 40 years ago.
Word from Henry Stone: 38 years ago, I was sitting in the office with KC and the Sunshine Band and had to pick up a third album after two #1 worldwide hits. We were talking about “Shake Your Booty†and everyone thought it was too dirty. But I told them we were going with it. Three weeks later, it was another #1 hit. Now, 38 years later, we are still shaking our booty with “Booty Shakin’ Timeâ€!
Jake The Dog was raised on the heavy boom of Miami Bass and the booty shake of the Goombay beat. Booty Shakin’ Time is his tribute to the sounds of rap and bass that he grew up on. The record is executive produced by dance music pioneer Henry Stone, features Miami Bass pioneer Joe Stone, and is produced and engineered by George “Chocolate†Perry, the bass player from the Bee Gees. Now, that’s a lot of bass!

This basic training will develop your rudimentary massage skills by exploring simple strategies for the use of hands, fingers, forearms, and elbows, and for listening through touch. Massages will occur while seated in chairs, and will not involve any additional equipment, creams, or oils. Participants will remain clothed throughout the training. Adam Overton is an experimental artist, and certified massage therapist (since 2007) living in Los Angeles, California, and a visiting resident at Cannonball through mid-August. His work involves performance, writing, experimental music, massage, and workshops, in formats that involve audience participation in order to facilitate odd and intimate artistâ€led experiences. Overton works closely with Guru Rugu as coâ€director of the experimental meditation center of los angeles and as a ghostwriter for Guru Rugu’s Experimental Meditation Hour on KCHUNG Radio.
The experimental meditation center of los angeles has no permanent location, and will be based in Miami throughout this summer. Adam Overton and Guru Rugu takes the role of artist-as-facilitator, offering small group meditation sessions, each of them of different nature. These sessions are not the traditional “therapeutic†meditations, but rather repurposed spiritual, religious, and physical forms of playful yet profound meditation, offering a safe environment for “something else†to happen. Experimental meditation sessions will be held at non-traditional locations throughout the City, and will be free and open to the public.

Friends of Nature Music Festival (FON FEST) announces the first round of musicians to participate in the Festival’s inaugural edition. FON FEST is one of the first eco-friendly interactive music festivals in Miami whose purpose is to educate the public on sustainability, the wellbeing of the planet, and how to contribute to saving it. Thousands of attendees will spend two days experiencing live music, cultural food, entertainment, and a wide variety of interactive activities as well as exhibitors.
The Festival will feature eco-friendly initiatives from the sponsoring products to the tickets sold. In addition to these initiatives, Festival attendees can expect to be occupied at every step with activities promoting an earth-friendly lifestyle. Eco-activities include stations which teach attendees how to pick fruits and vegetables, make homemade detergent or grow personal vegetable gardens. Other activities are camping, canoeing, movies, comedy shows, live art installations, guest speakers, and seed stomping to improve the park grounds post Festival. Attendees can browse the vendor site, featuring fresh fruit markets and exotic eco-vendors such as organic soap makers, alternative energy gadgets, and more. To satisfy mid-Festival cravings, all of Miami’s famed food trucks will be on Festival grounds serving some of the community’s favorite treats.
With the goal of raising environmental awareness and promoting companies that have green initiatives, the musicians will contribute to the Festival’s mission through their support of the Festival and by being friends of nature.

Unlike other festivals around the country, Miami was lacking in festivals that integrated music, cinema, and comedy – until now. Many of the comedians have performed at other festivals and now we can introduce Miami to these amazing talents at FON FEST.â€

Each member began making music at the ages of 7 and 8 in the House of God church they attended in Perrine, FL. PAINTER – Hector Figureoa
Born 1984 in New York City and Raised in Miami, H. Fig is emerging into the Art scene with his rediscovered passion for art.
Self taught artist, mostly drawing a sketching for himself or to gift a romantic interest, H. Fig started painting in 2012.
His influences growing up ,and still to this day, are street art and cartoons but has always had an appreciation for all art forms and mediums. His abstract approach to painting is done with bright colors on black backgrounds that allow the subject to matter to speak for itself.
Typically painting about human emotions and his spiritual beliefs, H. Fig paints using acrylics on canvas, wood panels and even mirrors.
Painting with his “soul and no formal training”, H.Fig’s abstract style of painting brings a unique voice to human emotion that stems from his life experience which he feels a wide audience can relate to.
PAINTER – Andrew Sloan
is an American-born, self-taught artist working from Miami, FL. His signature street-influenced, contemporary style with vibrant colors and bold outlines incorporates images and characters of daily life with elements of fashion, music, design, anthropology, architecture, and a variety of underground culture. Working much of the time on wood or canvas, Sloan also utilizes recycled objects, found materials, clothing and anything else that will hold ink and color.
First noticed in 1994 while doing manhole cover rubbings in the streets of Washington DC, Sloan’s exhibition history and gallery representation has grown exponentially in the past decade. First in Miami, through Damien B Contemporary Art Center (2005) and Art Miami (2006), then Paris (2008) and throughout New England from Burlington to Boston, Providence to Provincetown. In 2011, Sloan exhibited for the first time in Austin, Texas and returned to Paris for his second solo exhibition. He has been united in gallery shows and group exhibitions with many of today’s top contemporary artists, including Shepard Fairey, Phil Frost, Doze Green, Dave Kinsey and Jesse Reno.
Sloan has degrees in anthropology and marketing communications and a professional background in music, creative strategy, and print design. As tour manager for the Jamaican band, Israel Vibration in the 1990s, Sloan built an art history foundation from visits to the great museums of Europe, as well as, a large collection of street imagery, photographs and action illustrations.
Sloan is an active arts instructor, tutor, and community arts activist. He is a juried member of the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts Education Roster and a member of VSA Florida with intensive arts instruction experience with developmentally challenged youth and adults. In the last three years, with his wife Ursula, he has led more than a dozen 2D portrait and mural projects with a wide variety of grades and schools through short-term residencies and after-school/in-school programs, including Arts 4 Learning (2012-2013) and the Miami Children’s Museum (2012).
Sloan’s images and hand-drawn type have been used for signage, CD packaging, band backdrops, event flyers, t-shirts, print advertising, skate deck graphics, and, most recently, short-run editions of products incorporating his colorful creations. He has painted numerous large scale murals, both indoors and out, painted live at the Burton US Snowboard Championships, and has just completed a three painting commission for Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence.
Sloan is currently studying sculpture at O. Haligon Fine Art in Miami. His first works in 3D will be ready for Art Basel 2013.

Puccini’s Tosca is a riveting psychological drama that builds up to one of opera’s most stunning conclusions. Opa-locka: Mirage City Exhibition Opening at HistoryMiami on Thursday, June 27, 2013.  This is an amazing exhibition I had no idea that Opa-Locka had such an interesting and wonderful history. The exhibition runs from June 28, 2013 – September 08, 2013, this a must see.
“Opa-locka: Mirage City explores one of South Florida’s most unique architectural communities. Based on stories and names of characters from the Arabian Tales, Opa-locka presents itself as both eccentric dream; an exotic Middle-eastern urban oasis in a subtropical paradise, and tourist’s kitsch; an architectural conceit more akin to a Hollywood film set. Founded in the 1920s in an undeveloped area of northwest Miami-Dade, the city is a highly romanticized interpretation of an exotic cultural milieu popularized by Hollywood films and archeological discoveries of its time. The exhibition presents original drawings and architectural models that reintroduce the original fabled vision, aiming to rouse interest in the city’s iconic structural design and encourage efforts to preserve its endangered architectural heritage.”

There’s no better place to savor a multitude of seafood prepared in a variety of ways including Caribbean with its Bahamian cracked conch and Jamaican Jerk grilled fish, Latin American offering paella and Peruvian ceviche, Cajun with its gumbo, jambalaya and crawfish étouffée, North Eastern offering traditional chowders, lobster rolls and clam boils, Asian with the always satisfying sushi and sashimi and, last but not least, Florida seafood with its world-famous stone crab, lobster and fresh fish.   In addition, people can head over to the “Grove Wharf” – a farmer’s market meets seafood – where experts will be on hand to help them select the right items to purchase and take home.
To complete the festive equation, the Coconut Grove Seafood Festival will have a constant stream of live music including calypso, steel drum, reggae and Island Escapism. The Festival will also feature several nautically-themed exhibitors showcasing art, jewelry and decor.
