The Space Techno Loft Presents Magda & Troy Pierce 8/29/09

TechnoLoft-May23
As if Desyn Masiello on The Terrace wasn’t enough, Space and the Techno Loft are extremely proud to present two more legends, continuing their dedication to cutting-edge and underground sounds.
This Saturday, August 29th, the Techno Loft plays host to two of the top DJ/Producers in the genre, Magda and Troy Pierce.
Hailing from Poland, Magda (real name Magdalena Chojnacka), got her start in the mid 1990s in New York’s then-vibrant dance music scene. With all forms of dance music gaining headway, she rapidly grew with it, gaining notoriety both on the decks and in the studio for her uncompromising sound. Changing attitudes in the Big Apple led her to depart in 2003, bringing her to her current home of Berlin. It was in Berlin where her current sound began to develop. Partnered with Troy Pierce and Marc Houle, she began to take advantage of the new possibilities present in production and DJing techniques brought upon by affordable new hardware and software. Eventually catching the attention of Richie Hawtin, Magda soon began to release material on Hawtin’s influential Minus label. Of course, never complacent, Magda soon established her own label, Items and Things, where she continues to produce to this day.
Joining her also this evening will be Troy Pierce. A longtime collaborator of Magda’s, Indiana native Pierce took his influence from the dynamic scenes of Chicago and Detroit. With Chicago as the stronghold of house, and Detroit the birthplace of techno, Troy’s style naturally has been hard to classify, with both of those genres and more, making it into his record bag. Soon after, with a stopover in New York in the late 1990s, Troy eventually moved to Berlin, where he began to work with Magda and Marc Houle. Encouraged by the two, Troy readily adapted his style to the new flavors and technology coming out of Germany’s capital, with an insatiable desire to satisfy the city’s notoriously picky club culture. This all paid off in 2006, with Troy hitting the road with Magda and Richie himself for a massive US tour, which solidified his name as one of the “go-to” guys in the techno and minimal scene.
And of course, the night will be rounded out by Techno Loft residents Maurizio + Danyelino and Dsan Powell.

The Terrace Afterhours Presents Misstress Barbara 7/25/09

TechnoLoft-May23
Continuing their dedication to cutting-edge sounds, the Techno Loft crew at Space Miami brings another femme fatale of the techno and house scene to the decks this Saturday, July 25th, the legendary Misstress Barbara.
Sicilian-born Misstress (yes, there’s four “s” in there…) Barbara, having emigrated to Montréal at an early age, appropriately started her music career as a drummer at the age of 12. Soon after, trading in her sticks for a pair of 1200s and a mixer, she carried her affinity for percussive sounds over into her DJing, delivering a rhythmic, relentless, and uncompromising style in her sets and in her productions. With hits like “I’m Running”, and “Dance Me To…” tearing up the global dance charts and finding their way into the laptops and CD cases of fellow DJs and producers around the world, Barbara, long an underground favorite, is breaking through into the mainstream of dance culture.
With her appearance this weekend at the home of dance music in the United States, Space, the sky’s the limit for the Misstress…

FAME is proud to present the Grand Opening. The madness starts at 11 PM sharp, this Friday July 17th. Check out live performances by our cast of characters, including sing-alongs, fire dancing, and drinking contests, along with musical orchestration by our favorite DJ-in-residence, Nikolas.

“Irreversible an International Art Project is an ongoing exhibition exploring the perception of art and the identity of the artist through history and, in our contemporary society”

ABOUT US
Irreversible is an international art project founded in 2005 by Norelkys (Noor) Blazekovic, to portray how in recent decades artists have progressively expanded the boundaries of art, as they have sought to engage in an increasingly pluralistic environment. The creating and understanding of art, are likewise no longer grounded in traditional aesthetics. It is an honor for us to invite each of you to be part of our upcoming Summer event “IRREVERSIBLE 100 Most” to participate in the freedom of developing new models and instruments from everyday life, as Irreversible evolves in its efforts to become a creative medium for the better understanding of the complexities of our contemporary existence. I take great pride in sharing our success with you.
“IRREVERSIBLE 100 Most” will be held and sponsor by the prestigious CIFO (cifo.org), the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Miami, FL USA, a non-profit organization, established in 2002 by Ella Fontanals Cisneros and her family to foster cultural exchange among the visual arts. Cifo is dedicated to the support of emerging and mid-career contemporary multidisciplinary artists who are challenging the established boundaries that define much contemporary art today.

DETAIL EVENT SCHEDULE WILL BE AVALIBLE SOON!
Thank you all for your great support!

The Premiere Of Fame Downtown 7/10/09

fame
We at FAME would like to thank everyone for showing up to our Sneak Peek this past Friday evening. It was amazing, astounding, enthralling, and of course messy and downright dirty!
And this weekend will be no exception. We’ve ironed out the kinks and we are ready to rock Downtown this Friday evening. On July 10th, we’re proud to present the Premiere of FAME.
As we showed you this past Friday, FAME is not going to be a typical nightclub experience. With live performances by our talented cast of characters (and yes we really mean “characters”) worthy of a Hollywood epic, well, if the lovechild of Fellini and Quentin Tarantino got together to make a movie, FAME keeps the audience entertained all night long with said live performances, interactive experiences, and classic drinking games worthy of the cheesiest summer camp knockoff flick. And rounding out the entertainment this evening will be none other than our versatile musical maestro, Nikolas.
The madness doesn’t stop early either, as we’re proud to present the premiere of Disco Sh*t, the new Saturday morning afterhours experience to hit Downtown Miami.
Starting at 4 AM, FAME gets down to serious business and explores the dark and dirty side of Hollywood, presenting some of the latest twisted house sounds to come out of the studios of talented DJs and producers the world over.
We’re proud to launch this new experience with none other than one of Miami’s newest DJ/Production duos, the Cocodrills. These youngsters have been tearing up the charts as of late, with a body of work reminiscent of talents much older. Check them out this Saturday morning on the decks at FAME…

CCEMIAMI PRESENTS: VIDAS MINADAS, 10 AÑOS
On Friday June 26, CCEMiami will open the exhibition “Vidas Minadas, 10 años” that will visit Miami after being presented in New York as part of the celebration of the International Day for the Sensibilization on Land Mines and the Assistance in Mine Action at the UN headquarters.

“Vidas Minadas, 10 años”, was initiated in 1995 by Gervasio Sánchez, a winner of the prestigious Premio Internacional de Periodismo Rey de España 2008, and is supported by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for the Development (AECID), Intermón Oxfam, Manos Unidas, Médicos sin Fronteras and DKV Seguros.

The show presented at CCEMiami has been compiled in a book and follows up on the personalized stories of the first photographic project initiated in 1997 that documented the dramatic aspect of the victims of anti-personal mines in countries such as Bosnia, Mozambique, Cambodia, El Salvador, Iraq, Angola, Afghanistan, Nicaragua or Colombia. In this new exhibition, we can see the evolution of some of the victims portrayed in 1997 that have established a personal relationship with the photographer. The project aims to bring light to this serious problem and the situation of its victims so as not to forget. “Vidas Minadas” was presented for the first time in the UNESCO headquarters in December of 1998 on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, when Gervasio Sánchez was named “UNESCO’s Special Peace Messenger.”

At present, only 151 countries have signed the Ottawa Treaty and there are 167 million mines still active in 78 countries worldwide. The cost of manufacturing a land mine is less than 3 Euros, but the cost of searching, deactivation and destruction is more than 750 Euros. Human rights organizations remind that the problem still needs a resolution and that is imperative to continue working to help the victims and the deactivation process.

Space Presents Summer Kick- Off Party 6/20/09

summer_no_logokick
This Saturday, June 20th, Space celebrates the summer solstice in grand style with their Summer Kick-Off Party. Hosting the madness this evening will be some of Miami’s resident Hooters Girls, including Jessica Aedo, Juliet Cabrera, and Danay Marino.
Of course, a Summer Kick-Off is nothing without some top musical talent to provide the soundtrack. Taking the decks tonight will be legendary Space resident Oscar G, along with Patrick M, Louis Puig, Omar Diaz, and Lou Flores. The madness kicks off at 11 PM sharp, and beach attire is strongly encouraged…
And if a summer kick-off bash isn’t enough, the Techno Loft crew strikes again with another stellar booking. This evening, Miami’s purveyours of cutting-edge sounds present Adultnapper.
Francis Harris, as his mother likes to call him, is one part social misfit, two parts musician, and one part party animal. Rocking parties around the globe, Harris, under the Adultnapper guise, has rapidly become one of the most sought-after talents in the world of dance music.
Joining him this evening will be Loft residents Maurizio + Danyelino and Dsan Powell.

Dwntwn Events Free Concert DJ Le Spam and the Spam Allstars 3/13/09

Friday March 13 @ 5:30 pm
Downtown Concert Series

Friday, March 13, 2009 Miami favorites DJ Le Spam and the Spam Allstars play a free concert for the Downtown Miami Concert Series, filling the air with their ever-changing blend funk grooves, Latin poly-rhythms, hip-hop scratching, obscure old-school soul, oddball retro recording references, muscular horns, sweet Cuban melody and much, much more. The show presented by the Miami DDA at the Tina Hills Pavilion in Bayfront Park is a sunset happy hour and as always food and drinks are available. The fun starts at 5:30 pm. This is going to be an amazing show and we’d love to see you there!

About DJ Le Spam & the Spam Allstars:
The group blends improvisational electronic elements and turntables with Latin, funk, hip-hop and dub to create what they call an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and audience that drives for hours to catch a show — they know something very special is going on. This is a sound that has been developed and influenced by all the cultures present in Miami, and the backgrounds of the individual members of the band.

IKF LATIN AMERICAN ART AUCTION 2008
For the fourth year, the auction attracts some of the most prestigious artists in the world

The International Kids Fund (IKF) Latin American Art Auction 2008 will be held on Tuesday evening October 14 at CIFO – Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation at 1018 North Miami Avenue in Miami. This auction is well respected in the art world because of the caliber of contemporary international art it offers. Known in the art community as “The Collector’s Auction” last year, it attracted more than 500 serious collectors from all over the world. This year 100 prominent artists have donated their works and the selection of art this year is more exciting than ever.

What makes the IKF LATIN AMERICAN ART AUCTION important is that the event benefits the International Kids Fund, a program of Jackson Memorial Foundation that pays for critical surgeries, treatments and necessary care for children with life threatening conditions. IKF has helped hundreds of children since its inception in 2002—and not a day goes by when IKF learns of some child who needs to be treated at Holtz Children’s Hospital. And—Who Can Say No? IKF cannot.

According to Hernan Carrara, former Managing Editor of Arte al Dia International magazine and responsible for the art selection since 2005: “While the great Latin American masters are fetching increasingly high prices at international auctions, many contemporary artists from Latin America are creating works that are promptly snapped up by U.S. and European museums and collectors. In Miami, local and international collectors will have the opportunity to buy art works from artists that may be seen at major art fairs, but with one important distinction: exceptional prices.”

Rosy Cancela, chairman and founder of the auction says, “By purchasing art at our Auction, collectors will walk away with amazing art, and also affect the lives of very sick children.”

Miami’s vice? City at bottom in volunteering
By MATT SEDENSKY and DAVID CRARY

MIAMI (AP) – Blame it on the traffic. Or the number of new immigrants. Or the allure of the beach. Whatever the reason, Miami has secured the bottom spot – No. 50 among major U.S. cities – in new rankings of the percentage of adults who volunteer.

Nationally, the volunteer rate fell in 2007 for the second year in a row, to 26.2 percent, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service, which is releasing its report Sunday. It showed Miami with a volunteerism rate of 14.5 percent, replacing Las Vegas in last place among major metropolitan areas. To be fair, the study found 620,000 volunteers were recruited in Miami last year, more than 60,000 over the previous year. And many local nonprofits say they have more volunteers than ever. But there’s no denying how far Miami lags behind other cities, particularly No. 1 Minneapolis-St. Paul, with a 39.3 percent rate.
The study notes that Miami’s poverty rate and average commute times are slightly higher than the national average, while other factors influencing volunteerism – home ownership and education level – are slightly lower. Robert Grimm, director of research for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), said another factor was at play, what he calls “the leaky bucket” of volunteerism. Nationally, about one in three people who volunteer in a given year do not do so the following year. In Miami, the rate is six in 10.

“There’s interest in volunteering in a lot of people but they’re just not staying with it,” Grimm said. Rapid turnover is a problem across the country, and one of the reasons the national rate dropped again in 2007 after reaching 28.8 percent in 2005. In all, 60.8 million Americans 16 and older performed roughly 8.1 billion hours of volunteer service in 2007. On the bright side, the report concluded that “volunteer intensity” is increasing, with 34 percent of volunteers contributing more than 100 hours of service in a year – the highest rate for that category since 2002. On the worrisome side were mounting concerns that economic woes – including high gasoline prices and job insecurity – would be deterrents for some would-be volunteers.

“With more people in need – losing houses, losing jobs – there are more people to serve,” said CNCS board chairman Stephen Goldsmith. “You have fewer people helping and more people needing help.” By region, the Midwest had the highest volunteer rate at 31.1 percent, followed by the West at 26.1, the South with 24.7 and the Northeast at 23.4. By state, Utah had the highest rate, 43.9 percent, followed by Nebraska, Minnesota, Alaska and Montana. Nevada had the lowest state rate, 17.7 percent; Florida and New York were the next lowest. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Salt Lake City and Portland, Ore., were the highest-ranked big cities, while New York City and Las Vegas were the lowest-ranked after Miami. Among 25 mid-size cities, Provo, Utah, came first with a 63 percent rate – the highest of any jurisdiction in the report. The high volunteer rates in Utah and several of its cities are attributed in part to civic-mindedness among the state’s many Mormons, but Bill Hulterstrom, president of the Provo-based United Way of Utah County, said other factors also were at work. “I believe that people here really feel like they can make a difference,” he said. “We do not wait for others to ‘fix’ our problems or neighborhoods.”

The CNCS, an independent federal agency, used Census Bureau data to determine its state and city rankings, which are based on three-year averages for 2005 through 2007. In Florida, Harve Mogul, president and CEO of the United Way of Miami-Dade, said Miami’s low ranking wasn’t surprising because of the number of new immigrants. “We have such a high number of recent immigrants who come from countries without the same organized philanthropy found in the United States,” he said. “We’ve found that as people spend more time in the United States and see the value of philanthropy and community service, they are more likely to donate their time and money.” Still, Hands on Miami, which coordinates volunteer efforts for the local United Way, reported a marked increase in the number of volunteer hours: from 58,232 in its 2006-07 tally to 70,000 in 2007-08.
Lynn Heyman, who heads the volunteer program at Miami Children’s Hospital, said she has 600 active volunteers at any given time, more than ever. But the hospital must hold orientations twice monthly to keep volunteers streaming in to replace departing ones. “I don’t think the days of people volunteering with an organization for years and years are still with us,” Heyman said.

Volunteer coordinators at other agencies point to other possible reasons. Ani Olmeda Gonzalez at Mercy Hospital said the tough economy was forcing some would-be volunteers to choose paid work instead. Charlotte Donn at YMCA of Greater Miami noted the city is home to many transients. And Cathy Agosti of VITAS Innovative Hospice Care noted what many others repeated. “Busy lives,” she said. “Busy lives.”

Matt Sedensky reported from Miami and David Crary from New York.

Saturday, September 20, 2008, 12:00pm
The Light Box, 3000 Biscayne Blvd #100, Miami, FL 33137

This moving documentary chronicles the last year in the life of Robert Eads, a female-to-male transsexual dying of ovarian cancer. We’re introduced to several people who figure prominently in Robert’s life — most importantly, Lola Cola, a transsexual who’s become Robert’s life partner and cares for him full-time. The two prepare to lead a panel at the annual Southern Comfort conference, a yearly event created for transgender individuals.

A panel discussion with Southern Comfort director Kate Davis, Lola Cola and Tobias Packer of Equality Now will follow the screening. The discussion will be moderated by Rhonda Mitrani.

This program was funded, in part, by a grant from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners; the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Arts Council.
