Thompson Miami Beach is happy to announce its summertime Sunday soiree, that will take place every sunday until June 21. 2015 from 2 pm to sunset for the debut of Côte de Rosé. The hotel will transform its pool area into a Rosé garden oasis to create a chill garden and poolside party where hotel guests and invited VIPs will sip fine rose and mingle into the sunset listening to deep house / indie style format sounds from DJ ES. The month of May has been named the Mental Health Awareness month. As part of this initiative, Dr. Delvena Thomas, Director of DRT Behavioral Services is organizing a one day event called Free Mental Health Fair with other local businesses and organizations, in an effort to put all the pieces of holistic wellbeing together – mental, physical, and spiritual – and provide the community the tools they need to stay healthy and strong. The inspiration behind this initiative was brought about by the fact that Miami-Dade County has the greatest percentage of people with serious mental illness of any metropolitan community in the U.S.³

Attending community members will be able to enjoy the following free services: Boot camp @ 10am, blood pressure screenings, BMI and glucose readings, as well as free access to government mental health agencies and private practices of different specialties. Food trucks and refreshments will also be present for locals to enjoy.

The Education Fund to auction 180 pieces of original student, teacher art at the annual For the Love of Charity Auction & Honoree Celebration

WHAT: The Education Fund’s For the Love of Art Charity Auction & Honoree Celebration presented by Ocean Bank, will showcase more than 180 original pieces of artwork created by Miami-Dade County public school students and teachers. This Children’s Trust sponsored event showcases artwork crafted from materials found at The Education Fund’s Ocean Bank Center for Educational Materials, a warehouse with donated supplies where teachers can pick up free materials for classroom projects and for their students.

For the Love of Art features the Sapoznik Insurance Public School Alumni Achievement Awards, which honors 30 extraordinary community leaders who graduated from public schools.

In addition, the auction will feature more 120 luxury items, performances by the New World School of the Arts Alumni Jazz Combo, special drinks by Bacardi, and catering by the 2015 Teacher of the Year Chef Myrna Betancourt and her students in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

For this project aptly titled Poem: Videos, Wright collaborates with five artists selected for their dual interests in bridging the divide between disciplines of sculpture, photography, painting, performance, and new forms of film making with the written word.

The Screening Room is a new-media exhibition and project space located in Miami’s Wynwood Art District. Video artist, filmmaker and Miami native Rhonda Mitrani, recognized a need in the community for a multi-disciplinary space dedicated to film and video programs, lectures and gatherings.

Last Thursday, we kicked off our Mother’s Day celebrations early by treating our mom (“mamá”) to a day at The Falls Miami and having her join us in co-hosting a special fashion presentation for moms. Mamá lives in Boca and, thanks to Town Center Mall, is super familiar with the Simon Mall routine: lunch, shopping, primping, coffee, more shopping. Despite having a tight schedule, we got everything done with time to spare and created a few special memories along the way. These were our three favorite moments:

1. Seeing our similarities in an unexpected surprise. When we got to Macy’s to pick our looks for the evening, mamá went one way and we went another, only meeting up occasionally to reflect on our selections. We styled ourselves solo, so you can imagine our surprise when we realized that our final outfits were not only from the same exact designer but also featured similar prints. As we said to the audience at the event, “the apple clearly doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

About The Leah Arts District
Hialeah’s Southeastern industrial corridor rose to prominence during the 1980s as one of the largest and busiest areas of production and manufacturing in Florida. As a result of modernization combined with the effects of outsourcing, the uses that were once prevalent in the area dissipated and this particular area was all but abandoned. Since that time, a medley of different uses has been incorporated into the area including a heavy presence of some of Miami-Dade County’s most prolific thrift stores. These thrift stores have been instrumental in introducing Hialeah to an entire generation of antique lovers and artists.

The Hialeah Artist Live/Work Overlay District, also known as The Leah Arts District, enjoys a strategic proximity to the newly proposed Hialeah Market Station development project, Miami’s artistic hubs, and other destination areas within Miami-Dade County. Because of it’s location and highly affordable price per square footage, Hialeah’s new Artist Live / Work District is in a position to play a vital and important role in the artistic and cultural development of not only Hialeah, but the entire South Florida community. Meet the authors of the recently released “A History of Little Havana,” a book which focuses on the development of Little Havana as a Cuban enclave in the 1960s and its transformation into the diverse Latino neighborhood it is today. The book also delves into the political role of the neighborhood as a stage for protests and debates related to Cuba. Co-authors Dr. Guillermo Grenier and Corinna Moebius will read selections from the book and sign copies at CubaOcho Art & Research Center, which is mentioned in the book along with many other familiar landmarks. (Live music will take place later on in the evening, and the center has a full bar with a wide selection of drinks including many varieties of rum.)

Each chapter of the book focuses on a different decade, with vignettes on particular places (Cuban Memorial Park, Flagler Street, Orange Bowl, Tent City), traditions and events (baseball, cafecitos, Calle Ocho Festival, La Griteria, cigar manufacturing), arts (murals, hip-hop, dance) and people/ways of life (Central Americans, Afro-Cuban spiritual traditions, the mounted patrol, vianderos).

Copies of the book will be available for sale for $17 (cash or credit card, but cash is preferred because it will take less time).

ABOUT DR. GUILLERMO GRENIER: Grenier is professor of sociology and graduate program director in the department of Global and Sociocultural Studies at Florida International University. Born in Havana, Cuba, Dr. Grenier is one of the founders of the Miami School of social analysis and has authored or co-authored six books and dozens of articles on labor, migration, immigrant incorporation and Cuban-American ideological profiles, particularly in the Greater Miami area.

ABOUT CORINNA MOEBIUS: Moebius is a cultural anthropologist earning her PhD at Florida International University. Moebius lives in Little Havana and leads walking tours of the neighborhood (www.littlehavanatours.com). She is former director of Viernes Culturales / Cultural Fridays, the neighborhood’s monthly arts festival.

All funds raised from AIDS Walk Miami are used in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties to help our diverse communities in need. On July 25th, 2015, the city of Santiago de Cuba celebrates its 500th anniversary. Since its foundation, it occupies a privileged place in the island of Cuba because of its geography, its beauty, and the charm of its people. Santiago is a vintage city full of history and unique traditions. It is also the cradle of heroes, poets, writers, painters, musicians and entertainers from Heredia to Compay Segundo, from Desi Arnaz to Emilio Estefan.
This solo photo exhibition encompasses a collection of photographs taken from 2003 to 2014. Together they constitute the photographer’s intimate portrait of the city of his childhood and youth, emotionally rediscovered through his lens during his trips to Santiago de Cuba.

Local poets and art aficionados have partnered with Vintro Hotel + Kitchen, a member of Small Luxury Hotels and recipient of TripAdvisor 2015 Traveler’s Choice Award for top 25 hotels in the U.S., to celebrate O, Miami, South Florida’s biggest poetry festival now in its fourth year.

On Thursday, April 30th, guests are invited to enjoy a fusion of art, live entertainment and sultry poetry readings. An ode to one of literature’s most influential poets of all time, Vintro Kitchen will serve The Raven($8) a signature cocktail made with Grey Goose, Domaine Canton Ginger Liquor, cranberry, passion fruit nectar and red pepper flakes, among other drink specials from 5 to 8 p.m. Ladies are treated to complimentary champagne from 8 to 11 p.m. in the art-laden Scorpion Bar. Katherine Villari, Chloe Firetto-Toomey and Charles Morales are the evening’s featured poets, performing from 7 to 8 p.m. in the library lounge of Vintro Hotel’s eclectic lobby. Upon entering the hotel, the talents of curator Zoel of Rokk Star Enterprises and Miami historian Seth Bramson are on display with the perfect blend of modern art and retro Miami Beach nostalgia. About Jeremy Roth
Mr. Roth is an Associate of the Firm and a member of the Appellate Litigation and Trial Support Department. Mr. Roth joined the Firm in 2013. Prior to joining the Firm Mr. Roth practiced appellate and commercial litigation at a large law firm in Miami, and briefly worked as in-house counsel for a startup company.
During law school, Mr. Roth served on the Emory Moot Court Board. As a second year student he competed in the American Bar Association Law Student Divisions National Appellate Advocacy Competition (NAAC), winning the Boston Regional and placing in the top 16 at the competition’s national round.
His international experience includes a summer program in London, England at the London School of Economics; a legal internship in Geneva, Switzerland at the World Health Organization; and field work in the Andean foothills of northwest Argentina, where he completed a law and anthropology project concerning the indigenous peoples of the region.

Venture Law Project is an in-house program of Dade Legal Aid (DLA); they also have family law, domestic violence, landlord tenant, child advocacy and custody, guardianship, bankruptcy – all in house attorneys at Dade Legal Aid (123 NW 1st Avenue). The Put Something Back program is a separate program run administratively out of DLA’s office that is a referral system for private attorneys that want to give back and take on pro bono cases that DLA has interviewed and verified they are qualifying financially inaccessible persons. The Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts is one of the areas Put Something Back refers attorneys through, in addition to hundreds of other areas we don’t handle in house.

Oculto Miami Manor Opening at Soho Studios on Thursday, April 23, 2015.  This was one of the best promotional parties I have been to in awhile.  You walked into the main room, have a beer, take some pictures and pick one of three doors to venture into.  Once you enter the door you have three different experiences in three different rooms, all with period and story decor and interactive actors and activities. So much fun.  As you exit into the main room, you join everyone else with great music, drinks and food.  What a great night!!!!

2nd Annual Ceviche Festival Where Proceeds Went for a Great Cause by Betty Alvarez

The 2nd Annual Ceviche Festival was a celebratory event for the whole family which all proceeds when to the construction for the completion of La Merced Museo Peru Church, the first church and Peruvian museum in Miami.

The event had distinguished personalities such as Raquel Regalado, Tomas Garcia Fuste from Mira TV, Univision covered the event, and other media outlets. Guests had a wonderful Sunday that was marked by solidarity, great food, cooking sessions and spectacular shows of traditional Peruvian dancers, live music, etc.

2nd Session of “A Conversation With Innovative Women”

Innovative Women Hacking The Startup Life

This was the second in the series of conversations with innovative women titled “Hacking the Startup Life”, hosted byLuminary Central, Crea7ive Interactive Advertising, and Pipeline Brickell. Its aim was to engage the panelists in a discussion regarding common obstacles women entrepreneurs face, and what methods they developed to overcome them.

The entrepreneurs involved in this session were Birame Sock from FlyScan, Dawn Sole from Pluck N’ File, and Tamar Lucien from CanUStart. The event was masterfully moderated by Luminary Central‘s own Christine Johnson.

The event kicked off with interesting facts from each of the founders that shed some light on how they now face obstacles. Dawn used to play football for an all boys team, Tamar has family gingerbread house building competitions that encourage the demolition of other’s structures, and Birame responds to an irrate note with the gift of a can opener.

The conversation was fluid and directed by Christine with various pointed questions. Some of the responses are highlighted below:

Have you ever experienced an unconcious bias as a woman in the startup world?

Birame responded with an experience she had when sitting in the office of a VC in Boston. “I was sitting in the office waiting for my appointment. The door was open while we were waiting. The guy I was meeting walks by and looks in. Walks by again, and looks in. Walks by a third time and says “You’re my meeting?”. After I said yes he said “Well I have a hard stop in 10 minutes, what’s your business plan?” Two hours later he called his assistant to cancel his lunch meeting to continue our conversation.”

Are there moments when you under estimate yourself?

Dawn replied with “We all experience it, but I’ve realized it’s all in how you talk to yourself. Now I force myself to look in the mirror and say “You’re the champ” repeatedly.”

How do you overcome fear or other inner struggles?

Tamar stated “I’ve learned you just have to call it for what it is. If you’re upset, just say you’re upset. I have to own my feelings and let them out and then move onto the next thing.”

There were many other impactful moments and lessons shared by these three great founders. The insight they shared with the audience was relatable, actionable, and inspiring. Numerous audience members stated how valuable they found the experience and the actionable advice they were going to implement immediately.

The Beauty and The Streets pop-up exhibit at the Shelborne Wyndham Grand Hotel (1801 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL) will showcase a rare and interactive view of NY Street Artist Nobody’s conversation about female sensuality, sexuality and beauty in the streets seen through the eyes of Nobody. The exclusive cocktail reception will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Signature drinks will be served by Toast Vodka. Street art has become a global culture and street artist Nobody continues to create poignant socio-political observations and commentaries on the people and events of contemporary society. At Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s 4th Annual “Claws for Kids” fundraising brunch on Sunday, May 3 at Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami Beach, guests will be able to enjoy delicious stone crabs and other signature Joe’s cuisine without the wait. The event will kick off with a cocktail reception at 11:30 a.m., followed by brunch at 12:30 p.m. All event proceeds will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s newly renovated South Beach location.

THE COLLECTION, a long-standing supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, including sponsorship of the annual Golf Classic since 2011, will be receiving the “From the Heart Award.” The award honors a person, family or organization that has shown overwhelming support and constant dedication to the children of the community and beyond. Ken Gorin, president & CEO of THE COLLECTION is scheduled to accept the award.

Joe’s will open up its restaurant for brunch on May 3 only for supporters of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s “Claws for Kids.”

Menu items will include stone crabs, coleslaw, hash brown potatoes, creamed spinach and Key Lime pie. For those who don’t eat stone crabs, main course options will be available.

Frank Sinatra impersonator Jeff Grainger of Sinatra Sounds Entertainment will provide entertainment.

This year’s event is being co-chaired by Judy Kramer, a retired Miami-Dade County Public Schools executive, and Ruth Jimenez, vice president of Coconut Grove Bank and Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade board member. Kramer has chaired the event two prior times in the event’s four-year history.

“We are happy to present ‘Claws for Kids’ for the fourth consecutive year,” said Kramer. “The funds raised from this event will play a huge part in the future of the South Beach location, which will soon be a wonderful place for area youth to enjoy Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s life-changing programs.”
In addition to Kramer and Jimenez, “Claws for Kids” committee members include Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade Board of Directors members Jessica Goldberg and Willie Ho, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade former Board President Olga Guilarte, Connie Rebozo, Gian Traina, Lisa Kramer, Lisa Mendelson, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade Executive Board Member Mark Walker, M.D., Melissa Levitt, Rae Stein and Susan Geiger.

Moving Images: Archives To Audience

Unseen films, including South Florida and Caribbean-centric home movies and amateur film “arrangements,” will be screened in a new media exhibition space, The Screening Room on Thursday, April 23 at 7:00 and 8:00 PM in Miami’s Wynwood Art District. Selected from the collections of the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives by artist and guest curator Barron Sherer, the films are 16mm preservation prints, each the end result of laborious and expensive photochemical restoration. Two reels of film will be projected in a diptych – two images running side by side. The silent films will be accompanied by artist David Brieske, who will spin mood and tone-appropriate and experimental musical accompaniment culled from his collection of esoteric LPs.

KCC Productions presents Jazz at MOCA featuring Vivian Sessoms

“A Powerhouse” (Quincy Jones)

Vivacious, vibrant, vigorous – all adjectives that describe the voice and performance of Vivian Sessoms. On Friday, April 24, you can experience this for yourself between 8 and 9:30 PM at North Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art (“MOCA”) in a free performance of her special take on jazz and soul. Vivian, born and raised in Harlem, New York, was born with a love of music instilled in her as the daughter of two prominent musicians and niece of Nacy Wilson. Her mother was a former jingle and session singer, her father, a well-known flautist and percussionist who worked with James Brown and several other well-known musicians throughout his career.

Vivian began classically training her voice at the age of nine, and it wasn’t long before she was so well versed in her craft that she won a scholarship to the highly acclaimed Amas | Eubie Blake Repertory Company headed by the late Rosetta Lenoire. This was where she began training in theatre, dance and music, which eventually led her to a successful run in radio and television voiceovers. In fact, you’ve probably heard her, she was the soothing sound of a soprano in commercials that convinced you to purchase such products as Campbells Soup, Coke, Hershey’s and many more.

As a performer, Vivian has sung with many of the worlds most recognized artists: Stevie Wonder, Chris Botti, Cher, Christina Aguilera, Diddy, P!nk, Chaka Khan, Ke$ha, Rob Thomas, Patti Labelle, Patti Austin, Sinead O’Connor and numerous others. As a writer, Vivian has worked with just as many artists, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Towa Tei, Lalah Hathaway, Amel Larrieux, Junior Vazquez and David Morales.

In 2007, Vivian and partner Chris Parks released their debut CD entitled “Sunny One Day,” to critical acclaim. Billboard magazine referred to Vivian’s voice as “clear and exquisite”, Uptown magazine called her voice “powerful”, and Urban Network magazine called Sunny One Day “an impressive debut so polished and effortless sounding, it’s as if it bonds to your DNA and defies you to stop playing it”.

Vivian is currently putting the finishing touches on a follow up cd, her first jazz effort, entitled “Heart,” due out this summer.

Many artists spend a lot of time on social media posting their work. But, do they know whether it is really working? There are tools, many of them free or low cost, that help a user understand the impact of their social media promotion. Adriana Oliva kicked off a career in event planning in 2003 with a passion for coordinating events and bringing people together. For the last ten years, her work has ranged from coordinating major cultural events in Miami, to hosting and organizing press conferences and other media-related events, social & corporate events, catered affairs and working with several non-profits and cultural institutions across South Florida.

Adriana’s resume incorporates an extensive background in event planning for private clients, businesses and non-profits, working with all types of budgets. Her accomplishments include organizing, most recently, DWNTWN Art Days @ McCormick Place (2012 & 2013), The Miami Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival (2003-2008, 2013), fashion shows, documentary screenings, logistics, strategic planning and project management. After a three and a half year stint with the Miami Science Museum as the Events, Sales and Marketing Manager, where she worked on signature events including the new Museum’s Ground Breaking, Adriana decided to venture off on her own and pursue other private event businesses.
