History of The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency
The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency project commenced in January 2007, during the 2006-07 inaugural season of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (then called Carnival Center for the Performing Arts). The Orchestra’s residency project in Miami includes an annual series of subscription concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center as well as service to the Miami community through educational activities. The Orchestra’s residency activities in Miami were conceived and made possible with the leadership of the Musical Arts Association of Miami, the Miami-based board governing the Orchestra’s Miami Residency.
Over the course of the 2009 Residency, which began with events in January, The Cleveland Orchestra will reach nearly 7,000 people with educational and community engagement activities. This includes nearly 4,000 students from Miami-area public and private schools who will attend April Education Concerts.
In addition to its residency at the Adrienne Arsht Center, The Cleveland Orchestra currently has three other intensive and regular performing relationships, including residencies, outside of Cleveland:
* Carnegie Hall in New York
* The Lucerne Festival in Switzerland
* The Musikverein in Vienna, Austria.
Continuing a long relationship with Carnegie Hall, the Orchestra committed to a multi-year association of performances there under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. With Carnegie Hall and the Lucerne Festival, the Orchestra is involved in a biennial commissioning project, the Roche Commissions, which include world premiere performances by the Orchestra at the Lucerne Festival. The Orchestra has performed at the Lucerne Festival four times since 2004, most recently in August 2008.
The Musikverein Residency was conceived as a long-term relationship, which includes series of concerts at the Musikverein under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. The Orchestra’s five concerts at the Musikverein in 2003 marked the first such residency by an American orchestra in the history of that venue. In its third Musikverein Residency, the Orchestra performed four concerts at the Musikverein in October/November 2007.
During a Salzburg Festival Residency in August 2008, the Orchestra and Mr. Welser-Möst performed in five sold-out presentations of a new production of Dvořák’s Rusalka, and performed three additional concert programs.
At a New York Residency in February 2009, members of the Orchestra gave master classes at the Juilliard School and performed chamber music at an event at the 92nd Street Y celebrating the 80th birthday of novelist Milan Kundera. Students at the Juilliard School also had the opportunity for close-up interaction with Music Director Franz Welser-Möst, who led them in a reading rehearsal of Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony.

6th ANNUAL FLORIDA EVERGLADES BENEFIT
SATURDAY, MARCH 21ST
features THE COFFEE HOUSE GYPSIES
Currently, the Everglades is one of the most threatened natural habitat in the western hemisphere. Residential development, water management and agricultural use have shifted natural water patterns and have altered the vitality of the ecosystem. With an alarming number of people moving into South Florida every year, we need to come together and help to protect the Everglades for our survival.
On Saturday, March 21, 2009 Ploppy Palace Productions and Tobacco Road will be hosting a concert to raise awareness and funds for the Hold The Line Campaign and for Everglades protection. As part of this four stage extravaganza, some of South Florida’s top bands, spoken word artists and community activists will join together to raise awareness for this vital natural resource.
The Coffee House Gypsies (winners of NINE Status QuO South Florida Indie Live Music Awards last December) will perform at 4:30 PM. There will also be a broad variety of musical styles including jazz, rock, folk, blues, traditional Peruvian, vocal harmonies, melodic keyboards, Latin, funk, experimental, tribal rhythms, world beat fusion, psychedelic grooves and various interactive jams. Local folk legend, Valerie Wisecracker is also in the lineup of performers.
In addition, Linx, Anibal Fernandez, and other creative artists will be rendering live art demonstrations and there will be a DVD slide show from the Everglades Art Exhibition. Conservation advocates from Miami Sierra Club will be speaking about their involvement in the Hold The Line Campaign. Other speakers will include Mario Yanez from Earth Learning, Ray Scattone from the F.I.U. Dept. of Environmental Studies, Dawn Shirreffs from Clean Water Action as well as a selection of special guests.
Clean Water Action, Artists for Community Evolution, F.I.U. Dept. of Environmental Studies and other community organizations will have information booths with handouts and contacts to help educate about social issues and the environmental risk that threatens the natural balance of the Everglades. The event will work to raise funds and awareness for the Hold The Line Campaign and support efforts by a selection of various organizations.
There will be vendors and small businesses promoting and selling their merchandise, including The Wallflower Gallery, Sergio Torres, Progressive Rags, Between Spirit & Stone Jewelry, and selected independent corporations.
The 6th Annual Everglades Awareness Benefit Concert is sponsored by Ploppy Palace Productions, Atlas Audio Productions, Anamaze Productions, 7th Circuit Productions, Cymbal Outfitters, Mystic Cat Productions, Antidote Productions, Online Gigs.com, Music Art Love, and The Wallflower Gallery.
6th Annual Everglades Awareness Benefit Concert will take place Saturday, March 21, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. – 3:00 a.m. at Tobacco Road (626 South Miami Avenue, Brickell/Miami, FL 33130). 21 Years Old + with ID. Admission is $ 12. Venue contact number is: 305-374-1198

Downtown Concert Series

Friday, March 13, 2009 Miami favorites DJ Le Spam and the Spam Allstars play a free concert for the Downtown Miami Concert Series, filling the air with their ever-changing blend funk grooves, Latin poly-rhythms, hip-hop scratching, obscure old-school soul, oddball retro recording references, muscular horns, sweet Cuban melody and much, much more. The show presented by the Miami DDA at the Tina Hills Pavilion in Bayfront Park is a sunset happy hour and as always food and drinks are available. The fun starts at 5:30 pm. This is going to be an amazing show and we’d love to see you there!
About DJ Le Spam & the Spam Allstars:
The group blends improvisational electronic elements and turntables with Latin, funk, hip-hop and dub to create what they call an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and audience that drives for hours to catch a show — they know something very special is going on. This is a sound that has been developed and influenced by all the cultures present in Miami, and the backgrounds of the individual members of the band.
Presented by:
Miami DDA and John S & James L Knight Foundation

“Four years ago, we were just another jazz festival, and now it is really amazing to know that nationally and internationally, we are a well-known and respected music festival. ’Jazz in the Gardens’ has become an economic resource; infusing a new stream of revenue into the South Florida area; creating business opportunities for local businesses and sponsors; and driving tourists into South Florida and the local community. In 2009 we will exceed our past attendance records and continue to make Miami Gardens the winter-break destination for mature adults,†says Mayor Shirley Gibson.
About the Artists
One of the “best kept secrets in the industry,†Frankie Beverly & Maze have been pleasing fans with their unique blend of soul and R&B since the 1976 release of Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly, which yielded a string of hit singles, including “Lady of Magic” and “Workin’ Together.” The group continues to be one of the most requested at music festivals throughout the world drawing major crowds. As a headlining act, Frankie Beverly and Maze have been instrumental in giving exposure to several new recording artists, before they became household names, including Toni Braxton, Regina Belle and Anita Baker.
Attracting fans right from the start, Anthony Hamilton’s unique voice draws its soulful force and story-telling inspiration from such pioneers as Bill Withers, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Johnny Guitar Watson and Marvin Gaye. Hamilton’s career-molding break arrived in 2002 when he sang the infectious hook on the Nappy Roots’ “Po’ Folks.” That performance netted the singer his first Grammy nomination for best rap/sung collaboration–and a new label, So So Def Imprint. Not just a fan favorite, Hamilton is also the go-to singer for other artists whether the medium is R&B/soul, gospel, hip-hop, pop or country. Over the last three years, he has written and/or sung with a who’s who in music including Al Green, Josh Turner, Keyshia Cole, John Rich (Big & Rich), Santana and Mint Condition.
Kenny G., the world’s most renowned saxophonist, has established himself as the biggest-selling instrumental musician of the modern era. For the past two decades Kenny has achieved global sales totaling more than 75 million albums, with 45 million albums sold in the U.S. alone. Kenny G. has become a multi-platinum sensation, collaborating with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, Natalie Cole, co-headliner Babyface and Toni Braxton. With each new recording, Kenny begins from a personal place- the sounds that move him. For the past twenty years he has been a fixture in arenas, amphitheaters and concert halls and has performed for millions of people all over the world. Most recently, Kenny G. released his first Latin Jazz album, Rhythm & Romance, backed by some of the world’s finest Latin musicians. The result was a rich, one-of-a-kind tapestry of samba and salsa, ballads and bossa nova, all of which are held together by beautiful melodies. The album is a collection of new songs and beloved classics that are rhythmically rooted in two disparate sounds resulting in a completely original and moving work.
Chicago emcee, Common, has been an influential part of the hip-hop scene since 1992 with the release of his first album, Can I Borrow A Dollar? Through the years, Common has transformed into the gladiator of hip-hop with his conscious and introspective rhymes. Working with acclaimed artists such as Kanye West, Lily Allen, Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, Common has released hit after hit, including the Grammy-winning “Southside†off of his 2007 album, finding forever. Inspired by the 24-hour party scenes of Prague and Barcelona, Common’s new album, Universal Mind Control, creates a body rockin’ blend of hardcore hip-hop, retro electro, sinister funk and sticky sweet soul. Having made his name in music, Common made the transition from underground hero and eclectic icon rapper to mainstream actor, gaining the eyes and ears of a whole new audience with the releases of hit movies such as Smoking Aces featuring Ben Affleck and Jeremy Piven, Wanted featuring Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie and the highly-anticipated Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins featuring Christian Bale.
A 10-time Grammy winner with 11 solo albums of his own, Kenny ‘Babyface’ Edmonds’ impeccably crafts explorations of love, romance and relationships and has left an undeniable footprint on the evolution of contemporary pop music throughout the world. His accomplishments include over 125 Top-10 R&B and Pop hits, 41 #1 R&B hits and 51 Top-10 Pop hits (including 16 #1’s), which have produced single and album sales in excess of over 100 million units. In addition to his chart-topping music, Babyface has been the recipient of numerous Soul Train Music Awards, BMI Awards, NAACP Image Awards and American Music Awards. Edmonds was the recipient of the third BET Walk of Fame Award and was named BET’s “Entertainer of the Year†at the First Annual BET Awards Ceremony. This year he will receive a star on Hollywood’s legendary Walk of Fame.
Often recognized as the pioneer of the Neo soul movement, Erykah Badu began enchanting audiences with her 5X platinum-selling debut album, Baduizm in 1997. Her turban-wearing, incense-burning mystique and coy crooning would earn her four Grammy’s, including Best Female R&B Vocal performance for the single, “On and On.†Although Badu’s multifarious musical roots of soul, jazz, and hip-hop do collide to make sweet chaos, it is Badu’s organic hip-hop sensibilities that pervade her new opus, New Amerykah Part I: The 4th World War. The multifaceted singer, songwriter and producer is well-known for selling out live concerts and wooing fans worldwide.
For two decades Will Downing has wowed sophisticated soul fans with his soothing and sensual baritone voice. Downing’s winning musical blend has landed him on radio stations across the R&B, smooth jazz and adult contemporary dial. His hits include “Sorry, I,” “Do You Still Love Me,” “Nothing Has Ever Felt Like This” (a duet with Rachelle Ferrell), “When You Need Me” (a duet with Chante’ Moore), “Don’t Talk To Me Like That” and “A Million Ways.” His engaging live shows have made him a familiar touring presence, performing in Europe and stateside at venues ranging from nightclubs to outdoor festivals and, particularly, all-star packages. Downing has graced stages with cross-pollinating peers such as Gerald Albright, George Duke, Regina Belle, Jonathan Butler, Art Porter, Lee Ritenour and Vesta, just to name a few. After behind-the-scenes work with `80s club producer, King Arthur Baker and vocal diva, Jennifer Holiday, the Brooklyn-born singer/songwriter made his solo debut in 1988 with the self-titled album, Will Downing. Suffice it to say that after two decades of remarkable recordings and performances around the globe, Downing is recognized as the premier male vocalist for the embodiment of his singular, sensuous blend of R&B, jazz and pop.
Vibraphonist/vocalist Roy Ayers is among the best-known, most-loved and respected jazz/R&B artists on the music-scene today. Now in his fourth decade in the music business, Ayers, known as the Godfather of Neo-soul, continues to bridge the gap between generations of music lovers. In the ’60s he was an award-winning jazz vibraphonist, and transformed into a popular R&B bandleader in the ’70s/’80s. Today, the dynamic music man is an iconic figure still in great demand and whose music has been sampled by music industry heavyweights, including Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, 50 Cent, A Tribe Called Quest, Tupac, and Ice Cube. Ayers recently recorded with hip-hop artist Talib Kweli (produced by Kanye West) and jazz/R&B singer Will Downing. Many of Ayers’ songs including “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,†“Searchinâ€, “Running Away†have been frequently sampled and remixed by DJ’s worldwide.
Afro-funk, reggae, samba, salsa, gospel, jazz, Zairean rumba, zouk, and makossa are combined through the music of soulful, Benin-born, Paris-based vocalist Angélique Kidjo. Since the release of her self-produced debut solo album, Pretty, in 1988, Kidjo has been embraced by the international press. Kidjo’s albums have been strengthened by contributions from top-notch guest musicians such as: Cassandra Wilson, Kelly Price, Carlos Santana and Dave Matthews. She has also collaborated with exceptional producers, including Miami local Joe Galdo of the Miami Sound Machine. In 20002, Kidjo had her major label debut with Black Ivory Soul, where she explored musical elements of her native Benin to that of northeastern Brazil. Most recently, Kidjo joined forces with Razor & Tie for the May 2007 release of Djin Djin.
Gifted singer, two-time Grammy-nominated songwriter, guitarist and producer, Jonathan Butler, is the product of the Western World. Jonathan’s ability to blend his roots in African music with western pop sensibilities is the trademark of his many albums. At thirteen, Jonathan’s talents caught the ears and eyes of British record producer, Clive Caulder. He was signed to Caulder’s Jive Records and as the old cliché goes, “the rest is history.†Jonathan’s first single broke down racial barriers, becoming the first song by a black artist to be played by white radio stations in South Africa. In the 1990’s Butler solidified his presence with a body of music that crossed color and age lines.
“Jazz in the Gardensâ€, a two-day, weekend festival, is now in its fourth year and has grown to be one of the top cultural events in South Florida. The jazz festival delivers a diverse mix of music genres that range from Jazz, R&B, Caribbean and African sounds. “Jazz in the Gardens†has something to offer all music aficionados. In 2008, 17,000 attendees enjoyed everything from the Caribbean-infused hip-hop of Wyclef Jean, to the funky R&B of Chaka Khan and the hip neo-jazz soul of Chrisette Michele, to the soul-stirring vocals of the legendary Nancy Wilson.
“Jazz in the Gardens†is proudly sponsored by Dolphin Stadium, The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa, Tootsies Cabaret, Shula’s Hotel & Golf Club, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, UAIC, Southern Wine & Spirits, Comcast, FPL, Macy’s, Arnstein & Lehr, Miami-Dade District One Commissioner Barbara J. Isaac Turienzo TrÃo. Jazz de raÃz
Isaac Turienzo, piano; Miguel Angel Chastang, contrabajo; Tino di Geraldo, baterÃa

On Thursday February 26, the Cultural Center of Spain brings a unique opportunity to enjoy the best of Spanish jazz with the concert of Isaac Turienzo trÃo, a true treat for jazz lovers, part of the Beyond CCE program. Turienzo has been highlighted by the Spanish SGAE as one of the most important Spanish jazz musicians of the Nineties and has been present in practically all of the best jazz festivals, theaters and jazz houses in the World, including the Athens International Jazz Festival, The International Jazz Festival of San Sebastian, The Pushkin Museum Auditorium in Moscow, the European Community Auditorium Palace, Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid, the International Jazz Festival of Getxo, Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo and Jovellanos in Gijón, to name a few. During his remarkable career as a jazz musician, he has shared the stage with big names such as Andrezj Oleznizjack, Rebecca Parrish, Jorge Pardo, Miguel Ãngel Chastang, Carlos Barreto, Carlos Carli, Chris Kase, Laurent Filipe, Tino di Geraldo, Guillermo Mc Guill, Ove Larsson, Bob Sands and Matthew Simon.
The Miami concert will feature his trio (Isaac at the piano, Miguel Angel Chastang, base and Tino di Geraldo on drums) with the “Jazz the RaÃz†(Rooted Jazz) project, a tribute to the deepest music, the one we always carry deep down inside of our hearts, the music of a mother that brings a new perspective of our popular music with true sensibility. All three artists propose a journey through time with and endless horizon, where the ballad and the lullaby turn into a “Havaneraâ€. Using universal languages such as jazz or the most updated flamenco, traditional songs are supplemented with originally and elaborated rhythms. Popular songs from Asturias or simply Iberian classics converted into ballads, waltzes and fados turn into a tribute to peace and understanding in the World and a meeting point for good music fans.

“Fado is the traditional music of Portugal – proud, austere and deeply melancholic. Mariza is the music’s biggest star for a reason: She sings it not as musty nostalgia but as exuberant twenty-first-century pop, with a low, mesmerizing alto that’s as commanding as any pop singer today…remaking fado’s ancient sadness into a majestic modern sound.” – Rolling Stone

Two years after Rachmaninoff wrote his famous Vespers in 1915, the Russian Revolution silenced sacred music and the voice of the Russian Orthodox Church. Today, one hears resurgence in the glorious Orthodox musical tradition. John Tavener’s Greek Orthodox inspired compositions and Arvo Part’s reverent treatment of Church Slavonic hearken back to the glory of Orthodox composition typified by Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and Bortniansky.

The NYC-based Cuban guitarist and composer will release a new masterpiece of musical magical realism, Johnny’s Dream Club. Named for a legendary Havana jazz cabaret of the 1950s, home of the filin movement, it represents a place outside of time — the vortex of the tumultuous force field between New Orleans and Havana, where the parallel lines of Cuban music and American jazz converge.

Seraphic Fire’s Firebird Chamber Orchestra
Mozart & Salieri Concert

featuring the music from the award winning movie, Amadeus
Patrick Dupre Quigley and the Firebird Chamber Orchestra explore the rivalry between Mozart and Salieri, as portrayed in the Academy Award-winning movie Amadeus, this Sunday, January 18th, at 7 p.m. in the Knight Concert Hall at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.
Sometimes colleagues, sometimes rivals, Mozart wrote to his wife that the when Salieri attended his Magic Flute there was “no piece that didn’t elicit a bravo or bellow out of him.” This concert culminates in Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, premiered at the suggestion of and later conducted by Salieri himself.
The evening will feature other amazing music, including Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Exultate, Jubilate with special guest soprano Kathryn Mueller. Patrick Quigley will be your guide as you journey back in time to learn about the complex relationship between Mozart and Salieri. Johann Sebastian Bach, outliving one wife and twelve of his twenty-two children, experienced the passage from life to death constantly. His Cantata No. 82, Ich Habe Genug, is a stunning illustration of a soul gratefully leaving its earthly body. Bach’s masterwork joins Schubert’s Death and the Maiden on a double bill which examines the struggle, resignation and peace between this life and the next.

John Hammond has been mining the vein of American Blues for most of his 40-year career. Hammond is an authentic voice, part of the great legacy of American musical invention. A Grammy Award winner and nominated for four others, his most recent CD, Push Comes to Shove, is a reinvention of himself. Hammond has played with musical greats and friends including Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, Duane Allman, Michael Bloomfield, J.J. Cale, Tom Waits and The Band. Tonight he performs a solo acoustic set that ranges from raw and dirty to the emotionally powerful.

In the maze of music in Miami, one type, said to be decades older than Jazz, is carving a niche among music lovers from all backgrounds. The name is Choro (pronounced ‘sho-row’),which literally means “I cryâ€, and one listen to this Brazilian import and you can see why it has been described as the perfect marriage of European and African music. Quite simply, Choro is to Bossa Nova what Ragtime is to Bebop. Before there was Samba and Bossa Nova the working class developed Choro, the first truly Brazilian form of music.
Choro was born in Rio de Janeiro the mid-nineteenth century and was first regarded as Brazil’s version of classical dance music like the waltz and the tango. Choro music really in took shape in the 1920’s when master flute improviser Pixinguinha, who’d go on to become one of the genre’s most prolific composers, incorporated Afro-Brazilian percussionists into his performances.
“Choro is perhaps best described as instrumental music drenched with African influences and important features in interpretation, improvisation and virtuosity,” says Danuzio Lima, cofounder of Clube do Choro de Miami.
“Between waves of other rhythms which appeared from time to time, especially from abroad, Choro has endured and has captivated the attention of younger generations in Brazil,” according to Lima. “People are enchanted by its beauty and excellence, and it’s just as easy to listen to as it is to dance to.”
Choro groups usually consist of acoustic instruments including, flute; madolin or clarinet (as soloists); seven-string guitar; six-string guitar; cavaco (four-strings); and percussion.
Clube do Choro de Miami is founded by musicians living in the Miami area. These musicians are just as dedicated to introducing the music form to new audiences as they are to keeping it alive for the many Brazilians who call Miami home.
“Our goal is really two-fold,” says Bill Duba, “we want to create ‘roda de choro’ where local musicians can get together to play choros on a regular basis and to offer lovers of this genre music a chance to reminisce about Brazil.”

Xiomara Laugart is: “The Voice of Cubaâ€. She has been representing her country and her people, performing at venues around the globe for years and along the biggest talents all over. She is a living legend in her native Cuba where she has recorded more than 15 albums.
For many years, Xiomara Laugart La Negra as she is popularly known, was Muse to the Nueva Trova artists. Xiomara is both the essence of the old Cuba, with its rhythmic folk songs, fused with a blend of today’s directness and clarity of voice, which is eventually matched with her deep laugh. It is that distinctive laugh that will soon captivate audiences from all walks of life with her swing style in all of her Cuban splendor. Obviously, we are not in presence of a common manufactured phenomenon. This singer has a peculiar mystery to reveal, not only her vocal virtues, and flexibility, but a special sound, fluently “liquid†and garrulous. Her range is such that the jazz influences seem to be a natural extension of her repertoire. She takes on each style of music and embraces it with her own stamp and authentic flare. Ms. Laugart recently released her worldwide debut album for Chesky Records, a lavish and sophisticated collection of old and new songs written by Meme SolÃs and Andrés Levin, Descemer Bueno and with arrangements by Octavio Kotan and Axel Tosca.
Until recently, Ms. Laugart has been the leading vocalist in Yerba Buena, a New York collective with a brilliant mix of rhythms to which she added her African and Caribbean legacy. She has recorded and/or performed along names such as: Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Albita, Omara Portuondo, Jacky Terrasson, Omar Sosa, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Dave Valentin, Isaac Delgado, Carlinhos Brown, Arto Lindsay, Roy Hargrove, Ron Blake, Kip Hanrahan, MeShell Ndegeocello, Femi Kuti, D’Angelo, Macy Gray, Erykah Badu, Ana Torroja, Meme Solis, Many Oquendo & Libre, Fun Loving Criminals and Busta Rhymes, among many others, Her monthly showcases at New York City’s famed Zinc Bar have been called legendary. She has flooded the stage with her powerful voice around the entire world. Ms. Laugart appears in the film Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights and also appears in the German/Cuban film ParaÃso Bajo las Estrellas.
**************************************************************
Xiomara has now embarked on the enormous responsibility of representing, perhaps, one of the most important figures in Latin culture, Celia Cruz, the Queen of Latin Music, in the first ever theatre production based on the legendary late Cuban artist. CELIA: The Life & Music of Celia Cruz, raised its curtain on September 26, 2007 at New World Stages on Broadway, with a massive successful response on behalf of audience and critics, who fill the theater every day enjoying and remembering the late Queen of La Guaracha, through the amazing portrayal and incomparable voice of Xiomara Laugart.
**************************************************************
Critics say: “Xiomara Laugart’s powerful interpretation in the starring role fills the stage and the potency of her voice…convinces in every one of her appearances” MFedez Soberon, El Nuevo Dia “They did a great job. A tribute like Celia Cruz deserved.” Eddie Palmieri “It brought me great memories and Xiomara was divine.” Johnny Pacheco “In each stage entrance she is applauded by the fans of the “Queen of Salsa,” for her masterful interpretations.” Ruth Hernandez, EFE Agency “Salsa Queen Still Rules…Laugart is a powerhouse…” Joe Dzeimianowicz New York Daily News Oct. 2, 2007 “Now it’s Celia Cruz’s time to be immortalized…the humanity of Cruz and Knight come through with tasteful sentimentality.†Ed Morales, Newsday October 7, 2007 “Terrific renditions of some two dozen Cruz hits…the accompanying seven-piece band-led by Isidro Infante- who worked with the real Cruz-really sizzles.†Frank Scheck, New York Post October 5, 2007 “In a revelatory stage performance Laugart demonstrated she was the right choice for this coveted role and Off-Broadway has a new Hispanic star.†Norma Niurka, El Nuevo Herlad October 5, 2007 More quotes: “Xiomara’s melodious voice resounds in high register and she shows a vivid, exceptional sense of rhythm.†“Xiomara’s seductive style left its indelible mark on Cuba for a decade, leaving behind scores of fans in her wake. â€â€œXiomara, La negra as this young singer is affectionately called by her legion of followers, manages to sing every style from her homeland with ease, from bolero to salsa to danzon to guaracha to funky dance tunes.†“She has a unique blend of rawness, and her voice possesses a liquid quality rarely found in singers today.â€

In addition to performing the music to the ballets, The Cleveland Orchestra will also perform Tchaikovsky’s “Polacca†from The Sleeping Beauty and Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture (“Fingal’s Caveâ€), Opus 26.
Approximately 300 distinguished artists and guests of both organizations are expected to attend, including the Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet, Edward Villella, and the Music Director of The Cleveland Orchestra, Franz Welser-Möst.

Opportunities for New World Symphony musicians,
University of Miami students, and area high-school students
Music Director Franz Welser-Möst continues The Cleveland Orchestra’s relationship with the New World Symphony and the University of Miami Frost School of Music during the Orchestra’s annual Miami residencies.
In addition, Cleveland Orchestra musicians will continue to support school music programs in both public and private schools in the Miami area. In January, Cleveland Orchestra musicians will provide coachings at New World School of the Arts and Coral Reef High School (Miami-Dade County Public Schools) as well as coachings and master classes at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove.
New Community Collaborations in January 2009
During the January residency, members of The Cleveland Orchestra will participate in an exploration of the music and politics of Stalin’s Russia on Tuesday, January 27, at The Wolfsonian-Florida International University in Miami Beach. In conjunction with the Orchestra’s performances of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 (“Leningradâ€), Juan Carlos Espinosa, associate dean and fellow at the Honors College, Florida International University, will explore music and politics in Stalin’s Russia at this lecture/performance that will conclude with members of The Cleveland Orchestra performing Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8.
The Wolfsonian is a museum, library, and research center that uses objects to illustrate the persuasive power of art and design, to explore what it means to be modern, and to tell the story of social, historical, and technological changes that have transformed our world. The collections comprise approximately 120,000 objects from the period of 1885 to 1945—the height of the Industrial Revolution to the end of the Second World War—in a variety of media including furniture; industrial-design objects; works in glass, ceramics, and metal; rare books; periodicals; ephemera; works on paper; paintings; textiles; and medals.
Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and Ali R. Rezai, M.D., the director of Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Neurological Restoration, will hold a special Music and the Brain dialogue at Books & Books in Coral Gables. The discussion will examine new understandings about the vast impact of music on the human brain, including a question-and-answer session followed by a short chamber music performance. Discussion topics will include the unique way in which music and the brain interact, the impact of music on health, and a sociological perspective of the role of the arts in neuroscience. This program is part of a recently launched international collaboration between The Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Clinic.
Books & Books, Coral Gables was founded by Mitchell Kaplan in 1982. Since that time, the store has become one of the most well-respected independent bookstores in the country. It’s a local landmark and an inspiring gathering place for writers as well as readers. The philosophy at Books & Books has remained constant throughout the years: it’s about neighbors, books, history, quality, tradition and creativity. Since 1982, Books & Books has hosted local, national and international writers as part of its award-winning Reading Series. Books & Books hosts reading groups, poetry groups, free workshops and lectures, and partners with many cultural, educational and charitable organizations to present special events at its four locations.

Miami Residency adds to Orchestra’s existing long-term
performance relationships and residencies in New York, Lucerne, Salzburg and Vienna
The 2008 Miami residency served more than 20,000 members of the Miami-Dade community through concerts, educational programs, collaborative performances, and patron events. These included three weekends of sold-out subscription concerts; a performance celebrating Israel at 60, presented in partnership with the Greater Miami Jewish Federation; and free Education Concerts for more than 3,500 fifth graders at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall.
The Cleveland Orchestra’s commitment to education and community service began when the Orchestra was founded in 1918, and today more than 70,000 Cleveland-area schoolchildren, teachers, families, young musicians and adult learners participate in the Orchestra’s educational programs in Cleveland designed to nurture a lifelong love of music. With its Florida-based educational activities, the Orchestra continues to broaden its role with universities and conservatories, which previously focused on the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
In addition to its residency at the Adrienne Arsht Center, The Cleveland Orchestra currently has three other intensive and regular performing relationships, including residencies, outside of Cleveland: with Carnegie Hall in New York, the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, and the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria. During their Salzburg Festival Residency in August 2008, the Orchestra and Mr. Welser-Möst made five appearances in a new production of Dvořák’s Rusalka, and performed three additional concert programs.

Performance by Members of The Cleveland Orchestra
Speaker: Juan Carlos Espinosa, associate dean and fellow, the Honors College, Florida International University
In conjunction with The Cleveland Orchestra’s Friday, January 30, and Saturday, January 31, performances of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 (“Leningradâ€), an exploration of music and politics in Stalin’s Russia is presented at the Wolfsonian. A ruthless dictator with a dangerous interest in culture, Stalin was the final arbiter of what was truly Soviet music. Composers, like all other Soviet citizens, had to navigate through the shifting and arbitrary rules of the state in order to survive. Some composers adhered fanatically to the official line and others were mortal victims of the Stalinist terror – executed, imprisoned in the Gulag, some never to return. Hear this story told through music.

. We will no longer be printing Hot House and it can only be found on-line; saving trees and gas and providing better listings.
*Chirstabelle’s in Coconut Grove has closed (another place that tried to defy the market by not advertising their business – how many of you even knew about this place?)
*Love 94 (WLVE 93.9 Miami) is no longer playing jazz of any sort. Perhaps they will again on a digitable transmission, but this is not confirmed.
* Check out our myspace for photos from last week at Boston’s on the Beach, Hollywood Beach Balloon Fest, City Limits in Delray, The Orange Door, CityPlace Plaza, Suntrust Sunday Jazz Brunch in Ft. Lauderdale and The Fire Rock Restaurant.

Emilio will play the music of “Distressed Divas”. Emilio is now a BBC correspondent based in London, but Miamians may know him as the host of the amazing radio show “The Rhythm Box” from previous years. Every week, he made connections between music as diverse as Yma Sumac, the UK sounds of 4AD, Afrocuban santero rhythms, and beyond. We miss Emilio, so we invited him to help launch the series while he is visiting.

CONCERT: Russian Passion
A tribute to Russia’s long history of classical music innovation, this program will transport the audience from the early romantic era at the beginning of the 19th century (Glinka, Balakirev), through the late Romantic era (Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff) to the great modernists of the early 20th century (Scriabin, Stravinsky, Prokofiev).
Russia’s proud tradition produced one of the most prominent composers in the world, Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky, one of the greatest pianists in history, Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff, one of the most innovative and most controversial of composers, Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin, the most influential composer of 20th century music, Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky, and one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev.
Back by popular demand, Russian-born pianist Damira Feldman will captivate the audience with a lively and insightful performance of works by the great Russian composers.

After you hear Brahms’ Horn Trio at the Musicians’ Forum on the 15th, you will surely want to join us for this concert as we welcome Jennifer Montone, Principal Horn of the Philadelphia Orhcestra. Ms. Montone will perform Ligeti’s Horn Trio, whose combination of instruments was directly inspired by Brahms’ own Trio. Mozart’s Horn Quintet and Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 1 round out this vibrant chamber program.
Did you know? Mozart wrote his horn works for his friend Joseph Leutgeb and in his original score manuscripts wrote snide notes (in jest) to Leutgeb, such as “take it easy, animal” and “finished? thank heaven!”

Born and raised in Brittany, France, 25-years-old musician Yelle is known for her spirited, explicit lyrics, laid over a pulsating pop electro beat. This musical prowess was first showcased on her MySpace page in 2005 with the track “Je Veux te Voirâ€, responding to a macho song by French rapper Cuizinier. After her first solo performance at trendy Paris venue “Paris Paris†last year, Yelle is the emerging artist in France’s new girl-power scene. Yelle is the stage name of Julie Budet, a feminised version of the acronym YEL, “You enjoy life”. In combination with the explicit lyrics, her flashy appearance and electrifying performances were a great success, not only in the technotronic scene but also in the European charts. Her songs echo a certain nostalgia for the golden years of French electro-pop but are boosted by the groove and vibe of this shameless nouveau rave femme.
ENJOY A FREE “JAZZ ON THE GREEN†CONCERT AT THE GRAND OPENING OF JACO PASTORIUS PARK
DECEMBER 1st
Artists performing include; Toni Bishop, Ira Sullivan, Bobby Thomas, Othello Molineaux, and Randy Bernsen
The City of Oakland Park Florida will take another important step in its downtown redevelopment at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, December 1st when City officials and other dignitaries cut the ribbon for the grand opening of Jaco Pastorius Park at 4000 North Dixie Highway.
The ceremony will be followed by a free “Jazz on the Green†concert featuring several artists who were closely associated with the new park’s legendary namesake Jaco Pastorius.
“We selected December 1st as this was Jaco’s birthday,†says Mayor Layne Dallett Walls. “And we are excited to feature performances from musicians who had personal connections to Jaco, as well as the jazz band from Northeast High School which Jaco attended.â€
Pastorius, who grew up near Oakland Park City Hall, showcased what would soon become extraordinary musical talents at Northeast High School. More than 20 years after his untimely death, he is still considered by many in the music industry as the world’s greatest bass guitarist. During his short yet brilliant career Jaco also recorded albums with other jazz legends including, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell and the super-group Weather Report.
According to Parks and Leisure Services Director Jenna LaFleur, the 6 p.m. jazz concert will feature a “who’s who†of South Florida jazz. Songstress Toni Bishop, Othello Molineaux, Ira Sullivan, Bobby Thomas, and Randy Bernsen are among the artists scheduled to perform.
“We are pleased to present this free concert for our residents and anyone else who would like to come and see why we refer to Oakland Park as a ‘hometown choice,’†said LaFleur, who encourages everyone to bring blankets or lawn chairs as the concert will take place on the park’s large grassy field.
For information on the grand opening of Jaco Pastorius Park or the free jazz concert, please call the city’s Parks and Leisure Services at 954-630-4500.

Also on the program will be Green Family Foundation president Kimberly Green, Youth Expressions Executive Director Mike Rosenfeld and CBS4’s Jim Defede, all of whom will address the good work Youth Expressions has accomplished in and for the community.
Youth Expressions, the Little Haiti-based youth group that uses hip hop and spoken word to address social concerns, returns to Miami after performing in New York as part of this year’s Keep a Child Alive Summit, founded by Grammy Award winning recording artist Alicia Keys and activist Leigh Blake.
The Keep a Child Alive Student AIDS Summit was held after its star studded kick off, The Black Ball, with live performances by Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Adele and Emmanuel Jal. This year’s Black Ball honorees included Queen Latifah, Simon Fuller and Jackie Branfield, Executive Director of Operation Bobbi Bear. Keep a Child Alive is a New York-based non-profit founded to address the AIDS pandemic ravaging Africa. Their work makes it possible for children and families to obtain life saving AIDS drugs and support for survival. (100% of their donations go to their cause.)
Youth Expressions was invited to perform after being recommended by Green Family Foundation president Kimberly Green, presenting sponsor of the Keep a Child Alive Student AIDS Summit, and featured speaker. Youth Expressions addresses social concerns in their Little Haiti neighborhood and, by extension, those in Haiti itself, where the Green Family Foundation is also active in fighting AIDS as well as poverty. The Green Family Foundation is a private non profit organization dedicated to supporting social programs that positively impact global health and alleviate poverty.
Youth Expressions will perform on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 4:00pm at The White Room in Downtown Miami. They will perform the very same original piece they performed in New York, as well as other selections from the group’s repertoire.

In anticipation of this season’s first Sounds of the Times concert, we would like to thank you, our Previews reader, by combining two things we know you will love: great music and discounted tickets!
Two dynamic composers from “across the pond,” Thomas Adès and Gerald Barry, join the Fellows this week to bring their creations to life — including two U.S. premieres by Barry, one of which features seamless soprano Barbara Hannigan.
We are so excited about this collaboration that we would like to offer you a 20% discount on your tickets! Take advantage of this offer by mentioning “Previews” when calling our box office at 305-673-3331. This offer is good through Friday, November 21, at 5 PM.*

Previews discounted ticket price: $12!

Only 37 years young, Thomas Adès is a vibrant and influential figure in contemporary music. As a talented composer, conductor and pianist, Adès has been called “the next Benjamin Britten” and “the great new voice of British music.” He joins NWS to present two of his own large-scale works, These Premises Are Alarmed — dubbed a “firecracker of intensity” — and Tevot — a large-scale symphonic journey based on the title’s Hebrew translation of “arks” or “place of refuge.”

Canadian soprano, Barbara Hannigan joins NWS to reprise her role of Madame X in Barry’s The Stronger, a part the requires passionate dexterity in portraying frantic vocal explosions, as well as lullaby-like cadences. Ms. Hannigan received rave reviews for her portrayal of the unstable Madame X at The Stronger’s world premiere in Paris in 2007. We are thrilled to have her with us this week in this chaotic, yet widely-entertaining character.

The music of Gerald Barry, a well-kept secret in the U.S., is full of musical and theatrical imagination. As the leading Irish composer of his generation, Barry’s musical genius has been described as “part mad Stravinsky, part mad Handel.” With Thomas Adès at the podium, Barry’s two U.S. premieres, The Stronger and Diner, are sure to be an experience you won’t want to miss.
Special Offer for Previews Readers! Mention “Previews” and receive 20% off your tickets for this Saturday’s concert, November 22. With this discount your tickets will only be $12!! Call the box office today at 305-673-3331.

Electro Strings event will feature the Miami-based viola virtuoso Laura Wilcox and the up and coming banjo/electronics master James Moore from New York.
Canadian-American violist, LAURA WILCOX has performed throughout Canada, the United States and in Europe and South America as a recitalist, soloist with orchestras, and in numerous chamber ensembles. A passion and commitment for unveiling the obscure, reviving the “living” classics, and in premiering new musical works, Laura has collaborated in many crossover musical and artistic ventures with international performers and composers from North America, Asia, Europe, Central and South America. The Toronto Star wrote about her recent Aeternalis Voyage CD: “an eloquent premiere…by the brilliant Laura Wilcox as soloist.”
Tonight, Laura will present three pieces for viola and electronics by Orlando Garcia, Juraj Kojs, and Judith Shatin.
JAMES MOORE is a versatile guitarist with many musical personalities. Performing on a wide variety of acoustic and electric guitars, banjos, and home-made instruments, James combines the sensitivity and lyricism from his classical training with a healthy dose of improvisation, theatrics, and experimentation. Whether as a soloist, in a rock band, or in a classical ensemble, he aims for all of his music to be unique and personal.
James’s performances have brought him to concert halls and experimental music venues across the country, including shows with Bang on a Can, Other Minds, Princeton University, The Electronic Music Foundation, Anti-Social Music, the Merkin Hall Ear Department Series, and The Kitchen. In addition to collaborating with gifted musicians and composers from his own generation, James has worked with many of today’s leading artists, including David Lang, Steve Reich, Ingram Marshall, and Meredith Monk.
Tonight, James will perform works for banjo and electronics composed by himself, Lainie Fefferman, Matthew Marks, Paula Matthusen, and Matthew Welch.
We will also remember JUAN PEDRO BLANCO RODRIGUEZ, a pioneer of electroacoustic music in America, as well as founder and director of the Cuban National Electroaocustic Music Laboratory, who passed away at the age of 92 on November 5 in Havana. We will play his piece 5 Epitafios.

Giant Step presents Anané and Band at the gorgeous Florida Room at DELANO. Music provided by Louie Vega.
In the increasingly merciless music industry of the 21st century, Anané shines bright as an example of what a love for life, dedication to music and hard work can bring worldwide success. Chosen by Billboard Magazine as one of the “2008 Faces to Watch” columnists Kerri Mason raves, “Combining earthiness with glamour and roots-deep house music knowledge with pop wise diversity, Anané could be the first up-from-the-nightclub superstar since Madonna.” 2008’s Ananésworld is the multi-talented singer-songwriter debut album on the US’s pioneering Tommy Boy, and with it the world is set to discover the heartfelt, soulful and eclectic musical stylings of one of music’s shining lights.
The term ‘legend’ is applied to many DJ’s and producers without credence; Louie Vega is one of the elite few who truly warrant the title. From the Latin influences that shaped the early stages of his career, through his inspired partnership with Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez as Master at Work, to his winning a Grammy in 2006, Louie Vega is one of the true pioneers of House music.

NEW WEST ELECTRONIC ART & MUSIC ORGANIZATION 2008 MIAMI FESTIVAL
International Music Festival Makes Miami Debut
Miami. Oct. 1, 2008 ? Since 1998 New West Electronic Arts and Music Organization (NWEAMO) has been presenting highly eclectic concerts that blend DJ beats with invented instruments and electronic music from the far reaches of concept and aesthetics. High and low, street and laboratory; anything and everything converges, by design, at a NWEAMO concert. On Oct. 17 & 18 the festival makes its Miami debut, with concerts at FIU, Harold Golen Gallery and PS 14, featuring composers from around the globe and Miami’s best and brightest.
On October 17 at 8:30 p.m., the first NWEAMO concert, New Connections, will take place in FIU’s Wertheim Performing Arts Center, Concert hall. Following NWEAMO’s well-established tradition of examining music and electronic art that goes beyond simple classification and conventional boundaries, this evening features cutting-edge Miami-based composers and sound artists alongside established artists working in and between disciplines. The evening includes a stunning collaborative work between composer Orlando Garcia Jacinta and video artist Jacek Kolasinski, a premiere of Craig Walsh’s interactive composition for saxophone and electronics, a fascinating sonic exploration of physical sheep bells and cyberbells by Juraj Kojs and an intriguing new electroacoustic piece for saxophone and computer by Lawrence Moore.
The second concert, “Can Art be About Sex?” taking place on October 18 at 8:00 p.m., will be in Harold Golen Gallery in Wynwood district Miami. “Sex Sells” is the clich? that is muttered sarcastically by artists, and is the time-honored sacred weapon of commercial marketers, but serious art can be about sex and the emotional swirl that surrounds it. Music of the past and present has explicitly or implicitly tackled the fact that we are a species perpetually intrigued, fascinated, embarrassed, outraged and attracted by the subject. Operas such as Madame Butterfly (G. Puccini), Tristan and Isolde (R. Wagner) and Salome (R. Strauss) are just a few masterworks portraying the tantalizing issue.
The 2008 Festival NWEAMO aims to wrestle “Innuendo Intended,” the contemporary musical views on aesthetics, gender issues, politics, norms, history, rituals, taboos, propaganda, stereotypes, spirituality and physiology of this emotional and physical dance that preoccupies most of us for so much of our lives.
At this concert the artists who will sensually tackle art include the British cabaret musician Eleanor Williams, Miami-based composer Kristine H. Burns and the FIU Laptop & Electronic Arts (FLEA) Ensemble, New York-based laptop musician Sam Pluta, Californian Tim Poulen and the Miami own Gustavo Matamoros. Computerized cabaret, silky laptops, interactive pop-sickles, musical saw and saxophone will all jungle to create a seductive atmosphere.
The last concert of the festival will take place after shortly after Concert 2 at 10:30 p.m. in PS 14. This popular Miami venue opens to the final concert of the NWEAMO Festival in Miami, featuring sets by cutting edge performers and composers working in between popular and experimental electronica.
Programmed sets include Miami’s very own Otto Von Schirach. NYC-based artist Joshua Fried, who samples and processes radio signals in real-time while playing shoes as percussion instruments and controlling the sound processing by means of a steering wheel. The band SWARMIUS brings in their poppy and surprising electronic tones alongside the styling of their vibraphone, violin, and saxophone player. Erik DeLuca brings in his improvisational with live electronics and live video by Miami’s the TM Sisters.

Spam Allstars – An Electronic Descarga
Miami’s own DJ Le Spam & the Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create a sound that is unique – an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see couples dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show — they know something very special is going on. This is a sound that has been developed and influenced by all the cultures present in Miami, and the backgrounds of the individual members of the band.
The band performs 200+ shows per year across the US. They have released six CD’s to date, with the most recent – Introducing Spam Allstars (World Music Network/Ryko) – released globally in August of 2008. They were honored to have their Fuacata Live (Spamusica Records) recording nominated for a Latin Grammy.
Performing today are Andrew Yeomanson/DJ Le Spam (turntables & samplers), Jose Elias (guitar), Tomas Diaz (timbales, vox), AJ Hill (saxes, vox), Chad Bernstein (trombone, vox) and Ted Zimmerman (trumpet). Frost Music School graduates that play with Spam Allstars include Chad Bernstein, guitarist Adam Zimmon, saxophonist Steve Welsh, and Ted Zimmeran. The band’s most recent video (Gallo Pinto) was also produced and directed by UM Film School graduate Miguel Ferrer.

Giant Step presents Nikka Costa at the gorgeous Florida Room at DELANO.
Growing up as legendary producer Don Costa’s (Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra) daughter, Nikka Costa broke on the scene in the early 2000’s with an intuitive sensibility for the soulful sound that has kept her place as a forerunner among the new breed of soul singers. She toured with Prince, Lenny Kravitz, Coldplay and Beck, recorded with Mark Ronson, was nominated for an MTV Music Award and had hit singles in Europe. Known for her dynamic and energetic live performances, Nikka’s voice and presence has often been compared with Janis Joplin, Chaka Khan and Sly Stone.
Nikka will release Pebble to a Pearl on Oct 14th through her own Go Funk Yourself Records in conjunction with Stax Records. With this record, Nikka comes into her most empowering work of genre-defying genius yet, a quintessential collection of soul, blues, funk & pop infused tracks which marks Nikka’s triumphant return onto the scene. The album blends sounds and textures in an undefined concoction that speaks as profoundly to a discriminating musician’s ear as it does to the casual listener.

DJ Supervielle and the full live band!
The Argentine-Uruguayan collective, made up of some of the most accomplished young artists from both sides of the Rio Plata, have just released a new masterpiece, Mar Dulce.
This is the nexus of a creative powerhouse – the tentacles of Bajofondo’s individual components reach into all the coolest and most innovative aspects of Latin music and culture. Santaolalla is one of the top music producers in Latin America, and composer of soundtracks for films like Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Motorcycle Diaries, Brokeback Mountain and Babel. He is a singer, composer, producer, guitarist, and director of Surco Records and publishing company. The list of artists he has produced is pages long, but includes Juanes, Julieta Venegas, De La guarda, Juana Molina, Kronos Quartet, Antonio Carmona. With his project Café de los Maestros he has produced some of the most significant living legends of tango. Producers/Djs and keyboardists Campo and Supervielle have also enormous reach into the creative world of Latin music. They have recently worked with artists like Jorge Drexler, Ximena Sarinana.
But when the collective comes together to record and tour as Bajofondo, the sum is even greater than the whole of the talented parts. It is the sound of the hottest club in Buenos Aires late at right, and right now. A joyous, but complex mix of tango, dub, drum&bass, dance beats and jazz. Live, the show features the live projections of VJ Veronica Loza.
This concert has received support from Club Med, Business Centers International, Atlantic Broadband, the City of Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council, and Miami Dade Department of Cultural Affairs.

Described as “one of the most interesting compositional voices working today,” Lukas Ligeti is known for combining his talents as a composer with his improvisational fantasy, and highly diverse African-tinged soundscapes. Steeped in the musical traditions of his father Gyorgy Ligeti, Lukas embodies reinvention by making his contemporary music crackle with energy. As a composer, he has been commissioned by Bang on a Can, the Vienna Festwochen, Ensemble Modern, Kronos Quartet, Radio France, and many others. As a drummer, he has played and/or recorded with artists such as John Zorn, Gary Lucas, Eugene Chadbourne, Henry Kaiser, Raoul Bjorkenheim, Michael Manring, Daniel Carter, Eyal Maoz, John Tchicai, Benoot Delbecq, Pyrolator, Jim O’Rourke, Borah Bergman, Robert Dick, and Rupert Huber. As band leader, he co-leads Burkina Electric, the first electronica band of the West African country of Burkina Faso.
