Here’s a quick breakdown of our THIRD official “kickstART” soiree coming back on 1/13/13 by popular demand.

(Think indoor artwalk meets urban bazaar).

We have 2 amazingly talented artists going head to head in a live art battle for 2 hours! (The amazing Ken Nytburn and Tony Surphman will be our battle artists for this edition). If you’ve never seen artists go at it on a very large piece of masonite, then this is your chance to check it out. The line work, and immediate improvisation that happens within a 2 hour time frame can be intense to watch. 3 lines can become machine guns, 1 twisted shape becomes the outline of a melting world a la Dali… it is awesome to just sit back with a beer/cocktail and watch.

A handful of large TVs, and a sweet projector screen showcasing young/untapped photog work, performance art, maybe a music video by Michael M in there too, and some “B-Boy” battles on screen…just to keep it funky.

A litter of “pop-up shops” where local artists can hock their latest creations; moderately priced canvas work, chic toy designs, one-of-a-kind sneaker remixes, even some fresh underground couture for clients willing to wear and show $upport to new, independent, color-loving artistes. If you like something, you can buy it… that simple.

Invitees from local galleries, scenesters, business owners, boutique managers, all of my friends, maybe a blogger or 5, some paparazzi to keep us on our toes, and YOU!

For the art fanatics on a budget, we are having an hour worth of free vodka cocktails, when you send us your RSVP. Send your name and your guests names in a quick email to Charllie@ChalkMiami.com, and make sure to put “kickstART” in the subject line.

We are totally stoked! Things are really coming together, and we have no one to thank but you guys! We are beyond grateful, and blessed. Think of this event as our way of taking the love you show us day to day, and paying it forward to fresh talent without much needed Miami connections. We are still open to ideas, and there are 4 slots available for “pop-up stores”. Please feel free to LMK if there is something you’d like to see at this event that we are missing! Thank you. See you 1/13/13

Yvonne Brown and the gary Thomas Trio will be performing live at the beautiful Miami Tower SDky Lounge

As a long time resident of south Florida, Yvonne Brown has performed extensively through out the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean Islands. Born in Atlanta, Ga, and brought up in Montclair New Jersey, this versatile song stylist sings both popular music and jazz. “I enjoy all music….when I’m not singing I’m listening”.
At an early age, Ms. Brown started out performing in some of the most celebrated, upscale restaurants and hotels in the country. In 1992, along with talented musician and local magazine editor Jon Frangipane, Ms. Brown recreated the songs of “Billy Holiday” from 1930-1935 during the height of Billy’s career. It was a two night sold out event at the Riverside Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Fl. She has worked with and rubbed elbows with some of the best in the industry……..Ray Charles, The Temps, Dionne Warrick, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Phyllis Hyman, Duke Ellington, Sara “Sassy” Vaughn, and Bill Cosby…..just to name a few.
Today Ms. Brown and the Gary Thomas Trio can be found performing in many local venues in South Florida. Check your local listings. She can be viewed as well on YOUTUBE and Scattershottheater.com performing “So they may live”, a song written and composed by Jon Frangipane. It is their non-profit contribution to help feed needy children all over the world.

Gary Thomas has been performing and recording professionally as a bassist for the past 10 years. After spending his early years as a musician in north Florida, Gary moved to Miami in 2007 in order to study music at the University of Miami. He has recently completed both a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree from the University and continues to work professionally as a musician in and around south Florida. Gary has studied under the direction of Chuck Bergeron, Gary Lindsay, Terence Blanchard, Dave Holland, and many more while in school. It was in Miami that Gary first began composing original music and performing as a group leader with several of his own ensembles. In recent years, Gary has been recognized as a composer in Downbeat Magazine, and has also participated in Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead, at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. While living in Miami, Gary has performed alongside artists such as Shelly Berg, Kevin Mahogany, Ira Sullivan, and John Fedchock. As a group leader, Gary has performed at venues including the Miami Tower, the Intercontinental Hotel, and the Stage, among others. Gary’s compositions and arrangements combine the elements of swing, contemporary jazz, and popular music to form a truly unique, yet familiar product for the listener.

Kemetic Yoga is unique because it is the indigenous system that was developed in Africa. Thus Kemetic Yoga is a vast ocean of wisdom that was originally created to lead human beings to a realization that goes beyond the material expression of matter. What is meant by this is that the teachings are to lead a human person to a state of awakening that is referred to as the Nehast. The word literally means to awaken, thus the implication being to awaken to ones true nature, pure Divinity, beyond objectification.

(Starting January 12th, 2013)
It is known that it should take a minimum of 2 months for a person to be accostummed to a new way of living. You will be signing up for a 6-8 week course with your first class being FREE.

What is Kemetic Yoga
Kemetic Yogaâ„¢ is the ancient Egyptian system of Yoga enlightenment based upon the practices of physical movements combined with controlled deep breathing and meditation. Kemetic Yoga emerges from the one of the oldest known civilizations, which is ancient Egypt properly called Kemet in Northeastern Africa. Kemetic Yogaâ„¢ was developed by studying, translating and interpreting the commonly called hieroglyphic texts of Kemet (ancient Egypt) and the images of Yogic postures that are clearly pictured on the walls of the Kemetic temples.

Yoga is the Practice of Binding Individual Consciousness with Universal Consciousness
In the Kemetic teachings, this process of yoga is called Smai Tawi which means UNION OF THE TWO LANDS, an explanation of the higher and lower nature within the human entity. It shows how every human being is composed of a higher nature and a lower nature. The practice of Smai Tawi is to unite the lower with the higher; in effect, the same understanding comes through from the word yoga.

Now the Key West painter \ spatial designer, returns for a solo show in the Wynwood Art District and puts a modern spin on Abstract Expressionism. Yates’ large-scale abstract compositions leave a lasting impact. The primitive use of materials and bold strokes of black, create a sophisticated harmony on canvas. “There is no agenda, nothing is contrived,” says Yates ” Gestures are not premeditated”

January Grand Opening for Barezzito South Beach
Finally an Establishment in Miami Beach that is Open Late, Healthy and Provides an Entertaining Environment – The Perfect Pedigree
Barezzito South Beach will open its entrance the week of January 17th, 2013 as an entertaining blend of sushi, bar and music elements, creating an atmosphere of stimulating modishness. The establishment’s Latin influence and fresh ingredients, with an Asian flare infused food and mixology creates a nourishing environment at Barezzito South Beach turning into a classy party every night.

Positioned in the new Boulan Shops at Collins Park on the legendary Collins Avenue in South Beach Miami, FL across from the Setai and W Hotel. The doors will always be open for both locals and visitors alike in this lavish 4,200 sq. ft. of space. Whether selecting from an outdoor or indoor ambiance, anyone can appreciate the prominent deco structure, artistic lighting of blue hues, warm red décor and Ébano finished wood floors of Barezzito South Beach.

Hailing from Mexico, Grupo Impluza has done it again, as this will be the group’s 50th establishment opened in eight years and its first in the United States. Omar Quesada and Oscar Webber own Grupo Impulza, and have chosen Miami’s local, Antar Sosa, to lead the successful string of restaurants into South Beach. Sosa has ten years of service industry experience and anticipates opening future establishments in South Florida and Nationally with dissimilar design and cuisine.

“Barezzito will be so different than what is going on here in South Beach. There are very expensive places or places that have poor entertainment and poor food, too. Placing our focus on ingredients as fresh and healthy such as sushi and tapas, along with having live music and DJs every day of the week, there will always be something happening where you know you can enjoy all aspects at any time of the day.”

Barezzito South Beach will integrate daily specials and happy hours for those working in the area, as well as for visitors in Miami. From noodles to ceviche, bottles to cocktails, DJ to live music and sushi to sashimi, Barezzito South Beach is projected to be a distinguished entertainment based restaurant venue open late for a salubrious taste.

One of country music’s giants, George Jones, is bringing his unparalleled voice to The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Saturday, February 9 at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale on Thursday, December 13, 2012.

With a run of songs extending from the 1950s into the 21st century, Jones has had a whopping 143 Top 40 country hits and is frequently referred to as the greatest living country singer. He was a co-writer on his first chart hit, 1955’s “Why Baby Why,” and in the ‘60s recorded hundreds of songs including the number one classics “Tender Years,” “She Thinks I Still Care,” “Walk Through This World With Me” as well as more ephemeral fare like “Love Bug.”

Jones paired up with producer Billy Sherrill in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and their work together exemplified the lusciously string-drenched style known as “country-politan.” In the years that followed, he racked up hit after iconic hit, including “A Good Year for the Roses,” “The Grand Tour,” “I Always Get Lucky With You” and “If Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me (Her Memory Will).” One 1980s smash in particular, “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” became widely regarded as the greatest country single of all time.

He has received the four highest honors that can be granted to anyone in his line of work, starting with his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992. A decade later, the president bestowed the National Medal of Arts upon him, and he was saluted by the Kennedy Center Honors in 2008. In early 2012, Jones was presented another top honor as he received the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Approximately 56 years after being named the Most Promising New Country Vocalist of 1956, Jones still lives out that promise with a regular touring routine. Audiences flock to hear the voice that is country’s most indescribable as well as, by acclamation, its finest.

Tickets start at $70* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may apply

Tap ‘N’ Run 4k Beer Race combines a ridiculous running race – a 4k with 4 beer chug stations (chug stations = 3-4 oz. of beer per) along the race course, a full beer at the Finish Line, crazy costumes, great times with friends, and unbelievable athleticism. JAM Active has teamed up with some rad bars in Downtown Ft. Lauderdale to create this awesome day of racing and community enjoyment!

JamActive has partnered with the Little Warrior Project and has decided to donate ALL PROCEEDS made from beer sales. The Little Warrior Project is non-profit organization that takes a hands-on approach to provide military children with direct programs, services and events that cater to their unique emotional, social, and academic needs. The goal of the Little Warrior Project is to provide military children with the tools they need to improve morale, welfare and overall quality of life

In addition to being a part of an awesome and unique racing experience, all participants will receive a sweet Finisher’s medal (that doubles as a bottle opener…no, really), the equivalent of over two beers and a Tap ‘N’ Run t-shirt to commemorate your amazing accomplishment. We also professionally time the race so you and your friends can laugh about how long it took to finish a mere 4k while sipping some suds!

In conjunction with ARTtuesday/Miami, a monthly gathering of artists, arts professionals and aficionados, Girls’ Club hosts a panel discussion to consider the role of drawing in the current contemporary art environment.

Enjoying a close proximity to the artist’s hand and thought, drawings have historically been defined as intimate. With little technological advancement since the 19th century, the medium is often eclipsed by new media and large-scale projects in the contemporary art market.

Join us as we discuss the trajectory of and prognosis for contemporary drawing.

In this workshop we will journey deep into the hidden recesses of the inner mind. The inner mind, the unconscious and subconscious, consists of all memories and doorways to spiritual awareness: all the tools we need for accessing a greater sense of inner wisdom for self-healing. Through simply witnessing what the inner mind reveals, in this safe, nurturing environment, we can release blockages in our daily lives. We will have the opportunity to reprogram our brain with a greater sense of self-love, self-awareness and confidence in our own innate ability to create the lives we desire.

This workshop will consist of a brief asana practice created to open and calm the mind through releasing and aligning the physical and energetic bodies in order to access the subconscious and unconscious, a candle meditation to awaken the inner mind’s eye, followed by basic pranayama breathing exercises to calm the mind and body. Then, through a series of guided visualizations, accompanied by sound vibrations, created through live drumming and flutes, we will enter a deep state of relaxation where all memories are accessible. We will create the space to release blockages in our current life, receive tools for healing and personal growth, as well as opening the possibility to venture into deeper past life memories.

Regardless of where your journey takes you, you are guaranteed to leave this workshop deeply relaxed, more balanced and with a greater sense of awareness of the limitless powers of the inner self. Please bring a yoga mat, a blanket, a small towel and a writing implement and journal or notebook in order to record your experience in words and or images.

How Signs and other Comedies came to be:

“Can we truly judge a book by its cover? Depending on the Sign can you see a miracle? “Signs” and Other Comedies explore these questions and more,” states the playwright and director Wendy White. “Based on a premise that a picture can say a thousand words, the playwrights were given a prompt of the name of sign and asked to write an entire play based on the sign they chose – resulting in comedic one act plays and monologues reflecting the signs of our times in the most unexpected places.”

The playwright and director, Wendy White has written over 125 one-act plays and was a resident playwright, curator and director at the Kraine Theater in the East Village of New York City from 1984 to 1992, and at the Expanded Arts Theater Company from 1994 to 2001, in the Lower East Side of New York City. Her off-Broadway productions are the base for her new venue at the New Light Theatre. She recently produced her one woman show; The Jewish Nun to sold-out audiences in Off-Broadway’s 59e59 Theatre and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Adam White, Gallery owner, Gallery 101 went to see “Who Could Have Predicted” in Miami in May 2011 at Wynwood’s GAB studio and decided to offer Wendy a permanent home in his Fort Lauderdale gallery surrounded by cafes, restaurants, boutiques and other galleries. “Wendy and New Light Theatre will be able to cast plays every month and have a solid home base from which to create. We are very excited to have her here; she is an immense talent that promises to get even bigger and better with this wonderful association” states Adam White, Gallery owner, Gallery 101(www.gallery-101.com).

Wendy White would like to thank the wonderfully talented playwright Vanessa Garcia, Artistic Director of Krane, Inc. for all her support in the process of developing Signs and Other Comedies – In 2010, Garcia, the Founding Artistic Director of Krane, Inc. was named one of Miami’s 20 Under 40 by The Miami Herald for her work in theatre. For more information about Garcia, please visit: www.vanessagarcia.org

The dream team includes the fabulous playwright, Elaine Alonso-Cruz who is joining us with her brand new comedy “Full Speed Ahead!”

In 2009, the New Light Foundation, Inc. represented the United States as Art Ambassadors by the 1-2-3 Kinderlachen e.V. foundation of Rottenburg, Germany by hosting the international “Global Gallery” project (www.123kinderlachen.org). During the course of this important project, the “world’s biggest canvas” emerged; painted by children – transcending all borders and conflicts.

The New Light Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit public foundation, has won numerous awards around the globe, has performed everywhere from Amsterdam to Paris; from Miami to Los Angeles to New York City; and has tackled subjects relating to women, love, politics, and Shakespeare. Orchestra Miami presents the timeless holiday classic “Amahl and the Night Visitors”

Orchestra Miami invites you to get into the holiday spirit, as we present three performances of the timeless holiday classic Amahl and the Night Visitors (Amahl y los reyes magos) by Gian Carlo Menotti. This beautiful opera combines gorgeous vocal lines and lush symphonic accompaniment with a simple, touching story which reminds us about the true meaning of Christmas. The story focuses on a young crippled boy, Amahl, and his mother, who welcome some very unexpected visitors into their home- the Three Kings- who are on their way to bring gifts to the Child. Perfect for the whole family, the performance lasts approximately one hour.

The production stars 13 year old Alexander Segarra as Amahl, Jouvanca Jean-Baptiste and Marinel Cruz as the Mother, Justin John Moniz, Kunya Rowley and Miguel Llerena as Kaspar, Graham Fandrei and Nelson Martinez as Melchior, Kevin Short and Gibson Dorcé as Balthazar and Ardean Landhuis as the Page. The performances will be on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at 8:00 PM at the Miami Shores Presbyterian Church, located at 609 NE 96 Street, Miami Shores, FL 33138, conducted by Orchestra Miami’s Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi, directed by Michael Yawney, choreographed by Octavio Campos and costume design by Angela Esposito.

Tickets for the Dec. 22nd performance are priced from $20-$30, with half-priced tickets available for children under the age of 18, available through Brown Paper Tickets or by calling 1-800-838-3006.

Performances are made possible by a grant from the City of Coral Gables and with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. For more information and about these performances and about Orchestra Miami, please call (305) 274-2103 or visit www.orchestramiami.org.

(Think indoor artwalk meets urban bazaar).

We have 2 amazingly talented artists going head to head in a live art battle for 2 hours! If you’ve never seen artists go at it on a very large piece of masonite, then this is your chance to check it out. The line work, and immediate improvisation that happens within a 2 hour time frame can be intense to watch. 3 lines can become machine guns, 1 twisted shape becomes the ou
tline of a melting world a la Dali… it is awesome to just sit back with a beer/cocktail and watch.

The Machine, America’s top Pink Floyd show, will bring its stellar performance and intergalactic laser lights to The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Friday, January 18 at 8 p.m. Tickets for the concert are on sale now.

The Machine has forged a 20 year reputation of excellence, extending the legacy of Pink Floyd, while creating another legacy all their own. The talented musicians that make up The Machine include founding members Joe Pascarell (guitar, vocals) and Tahrah Cohen (drums), as well as longtime stage mates Ryan Ball (bass, vocals) and Scott Chasolen (keys, vocals).

The New York based band focuses on making every show an authentic Floydian experience for their fans. Known for performing a diverse mix of The Floyd’s extensive 16-album repertoire, complete with faithful renditions of popular hits as well as obscure gems, The Machine’s stellar musicianship, dramatic lighting and video, and their passionate delivery sets them above and beyond the rest.

In the classic tradition, The Machine explores collective improvisation paralleling and even rivaling that of an early 1970s Pink Floyd mentality. Their use of expanded theatrical elements and elaborate stage displays continues in the spirit of the later Floyd lineups of the 1980s. The band is also known for recreating entire albums as a part of their show, accepting requests from fans, and for taking an A to Z approach in which one song is played for every letter of the alphabet. Additionally, the quartet has been sharing the stage with full symphony orchestras, including the Atlanta, Detroit, Pittsburgh and San Diego Symphonies.

Over the years, The Machine has touched the hearts and souls of many, selling out theaters, large clubs and casinos across North and Central America, Europe and Asia. They have also appeared at renowned music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Riverbend, Gathering of the Vibes, Buffalo’s Artpark and Germany’s Rock of Ages.

Tickets start at $15* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may apply

Following a private preview on Thursday, December 6th, the exhibition opens to the public on Friday December 7, from 6-10pm and will be on view through December 14th, open daily from 10am-6pm. Ivory, Ces One and Tich brought color to the parts of the big apple where its skin was in decay, as they left their mark and proclaimed their alter egos on the brown/grey dullness of the outer boroughs. LUXOTICA is the first time these artists, who have known each other since they were teens, are exhibiting together. It is an exhibition celebrating their individual styles and techniques that have matured over the years. Iconic, large scale works by all three artists will be featured in the massive exhibition space of the 1926 Semiole Building.

An education in the Arts develops innovative and creative leaders in business, politics, and fields that require critical thinking skills that can literally change communities from the ground up.
The LP mission is simple: Allow the kids, and future of Miami, to create and dream a life bigger than their surroundings would otherwise allot.
We hope to influence others and go beyond just providing support to prove that a group of friends with a common goal can organize and deliver a strong message of change in the community and beyond.
Just as a lotus flower has its beginnings in murky water, we too can rise above our given circumstances and blossom into something spectacular.

13 Lucky Ingredients for 2013 this New Year’s Eve at Essensia Restaurant

With the coming New Year, The Palms Hotel & Spa offers diners the opportunity to feast on a special New Year’s Eve 2013 “Lucky 13 Menu” by Chef Julie dedicated to foods from around the globe believed to bring luck and help ensure 2013 will be a great year! Traditions vary from country to country, but there are striking similarities among them. A few auspicious foods include grapes, greens, fish, pork, legumes and cake. Essensia’s New Year’s Eve 2013 “Lucky 13” Menu was created with these ingredients, resulting in a globally inspired gourmet smorgasbord of culinary good luck.

Good Luck Meter: Grapes represent the 12 strokes of the clock at midnight and the 12 months of 2013. The sweeter the grapes, the better each month will be. Greens (cooked or raw) symbolize economic fortune. It is believed that the more greens consumed the larger one’s fortune the following year. Whole fish offer three levels of luck: scales represent coins, they travel in schools representing prosperity, and they swim forward symbolizing progress. Cured salmon is believed to bring prosperity. Pork signifies progress, wealth and prosperity. Legumes (i.e. beans) are symbolic of money because they resemble coins and when cooked they swell increasing financial rewards. Citrus represents wealth and luck. Pomegranate is symbolic for abundance and fertility. Long noodles signify long life, but only if you eat them without chewing or breaking (must slurp for luck). A side of corn bread represents the glories of gold. Ring shaped food (i.e. cakes, round backed goods) represent the year coming full circle.

Salute the start of the best New Year with a Welcome Cocktail and Taste featuring the “Grapes of Luck” cocktail made with Charbay Organic Meyer Lemon Infused Vodka, Muddled Grapes and Lemon Basil and a bite of Smoked Salmon with Fava Bean Mousse, Herb Crepe and Ostera Caviar. Essensia’s homemade specialty breads including Corn Bread Muffins* will also be served.

The first course is a Hopping John Creole Style Black Eyed Pea Ragout* appetizer served over Risotto Cake and southern Cabbage Slaw followed by Split Pea-Lentil Soup with Italian Pork Sausage and Rosemary. The third course is a Kale Salad* with Pomegranate seeds, Spiced Pumpkin Seeds, Roasted Delicata Squash Rings and Sheep’s Milk Feta. Entrée selections* include choice of Whole Grilled Branzini or Garlic-Ginger Crusted Natural Filet served with Soba Noodles in Lemongrass-Coconut-Kaffir Lime Broth, Ginger, Carrot Coins, Asian Greens, Oyster Mushrooms and Heirloom Tomatoes. Dessert* features a New Year’s Orange and Brandy Cake.

Two seating times are available on New Year’s Eve – 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. to midnight. The first seating will feature a 4 course prix fixe menu (identified above by an *) for $95. The second seating will feature the full menu and a Champagne toast for $185. A kids menu is available for $35. Prices do not include tax and gratuity. Musical entertainment will be provided by DJ Lee’Or. Essensia offers exceptional indoor and outdoor seating options. For reservations, please call 305.908.5458 or visit www.essensiarestaurant.com.

Editor’s Note: For extra good luck in 2013, steer clear from lobster and chicken on New Year’s Eve.

Rick Springfield, best known for the ‘80s smash “Jessie’s Girl” and a total of 17 top-40 hits, will perform his high energy show at The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Friday, January 11 at 8 p.m. Tickets for the show are on sale now, with general admission standing-room only.

A singer turned soap opera star turned singer, Springfield was born in Australia and moved a great deal with his military family throughout Australia and the United States. In 1968, he joined the band Zoot, which became one of the most popular groups in Australia. He later went solo in 1971 and garnered his first U.S. success the following year with a recording of “Speak to the Sky.” The song reached number 14 in the U.S.

In between album recordings, Springfield began acting on General Hospital. His popularity skyrocketed, setting the stage for the release of Working Class Dog in 1981. Powered by the classic single “Jessie’s Girl,” which eventually hit the top of the charts, and the Top Ten follow-up “I’ve Done Everything for You,” Working Class Dog was a smash success. Springfield was awarded a Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal for “Jessie’s Girl.” Springfield eventually returned to his first love of music when concerts conflicted with his television career.

The follow-up album, Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet, was released in 1982, spawning the Top Ten smash “Don’t Talk to Strangers.” In 1983, he released Living in Oz, which also went platinum with the Top Ten “Affair of the Heart” and “Human Touch.”

Springfield made the leap to the big screen in 1984 with Hard to Hold, and the soundtrack spawned his Top Ten hit “Love Somebody.” He has continued to record albums from the ‘80s through the present. His latest album, released in 2012, is titled Songs for the End of the World. With more than 25 million albums sold and 17 top 40 hits, Springfield continues to perform for fans worldwide. This workshop is designed to strengthen your will and mind so that you can distribute inner healing energies (prana) throughout your body.

The workshop will begin by warming up and stretching your physical body with conscious heart opening asanas/poses. We will emphasize breath and bringing prana into the body with each movement. Next we will slow down our movements with a few yummy restorative heart openers followed by a guided meditation and the main event.

Our main focus in the workshop will be the powerful mandala exercise where we will make a luminous drawing of our hands. The drawing will act as a simple biofeedback device- a visual mirror to our eyes and brain- by making the invisible energies visible and more “real” to our conscious mind. As you draw your consciousness, prana, physical body, and paper and pencil all will be linked in an alchemic healing process.
Healing alchemy is the magical transformation that occurs when the artist consciously focuses and directs “prana” through the body out of the hands and fingers and, along with his or her individual inspired soul-consciousness, into materials such as (in this case) pencil and paper.
We will close with a meditation and gazing upon our drawings, with the intention that you become aware of the healing energies present within the body.

Please bring a yoga mat, pillows, blankets, drums, musical instruments , or any stones or personal items that inspire you on a deep level!

Price: $35.00 (includes all materials)

Don’t miss blues sensation Cassie Taylor and the Soul Cavalry as they perform free at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek’s Nectar Lounge. The group is comprised of front woman Cassie Taylor, guitarist Eric Wiggs and drummer Josh Moore. Based in Boulder, CO, the young power trio creates a fresh sound – NeoBlues – that bridges the gap between blues, rock, folk, pop and soul.

Taylor is the daughter of renowned bluesman Otis Taylor and toured in his band for seven years as bassist and backup vocalist. Staking a claim as a musician in her own right, her thumping bass lines, sultry vocals, original songs, witty sense of humor and high energy performance creates a diverse act resembling an old time variety show or cabaret.

Not to be missed, Cassie Taylor and the Soul Cavalry will be enjoyed by even the most traditional of blues fans.

Featuring Broadway star Janet Dacal and Carbonell Award nominee Christopher A. Kent, The Last Five Years is a contemporary song-cycle musical that explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. The story, told in the exuberant and heart-rending songs of award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, chronicles the young couple’s romance in a new and exciting way: her story starts at the end of their relationship; his begins on the day they met. Funny and uplifting, the show captures some of the most heartbreaking and universally felt moments of modern romance, and promises to be an artistic treat for South Florida audiences.

For centuries, the street has engaged a discourse between the artists and society whether through performances, happenings or exhibitions. Expanding the tradition to the digital domain, we are bringing electroacoustic music, art and performance to the streets of Miami’s Wynwood District. The festival aims to reinvigorate the contact between the experimental and the public during this year’s Art Basel Fair Miami, featuring video screenings and real-time performances by a laptop orchestra, music robotic machines, sensor-embedded belly dancer, human beatboxer virtuoso, homemade TV and table analog synthesizers and multimodal headdresses. The line up includes local and national names such as Taylan Cihan, Aurie Hsu, FLEA: FIU Laptop & Electronic Arts Ensemble, EMMI: Expressive Machines Musical Instruments, Kyle Evans, Adam Matta and Kim Yantis. The festival will open on Thursday, December 6 (8-11PM) with the continuous screening of twelve stunning works for computer video and sound. The programs on both Friday, December 7 and Saturday, December 8 will be enriched by an afternoon electronic music performance fair (5-7PM): the attendees will be able to acquire an original custom-designed ringtone produced by the music robotic machines and the homemade analog synthesizers.

S.T.A.R.S. School for Autism is a non-profit organization with a commitment to provide a tailored learning experience for children with autism. The primary mission of S.T.A.R.S. is to provide an individualized scientifically varied education to children with autism. Through partnerships with the community and families, our students receive an integrative and systemic approach to education, aimed to help children reach their optimal potential.

S.T.A.R.S School for Autism is one of the very few schools in the State of Florida to incorporate holistic methods as part of the schools curriculum and is the first school in Miami-Dade to offer early intervention to children with autism. This holistic approach is implemented through DAP Wellness’ C.H.E.S.S. (Children’s Holistic Educational Support Services) program which is designed to meet the specific educational, developmental and emotional needs of each and every S.T.A.R.S. student and family.

S.T.A.R.S. is playing an important role in helping children and families whose lives are impacted by Autism. This important work is supported largely by the support of generous donors and partners who contribute to our cause. Without the continued support of generous donors like; El Dorado, TD Bank, CAC Medical Centers, POSH Beauty Studio, and Cao Chocolates the mission of S.T.A.R.S would not be feasible. Without contribution from these remarkable organizations and others, the financial resources that are unavoidably necessary to maintain the level of excellence we have achieved in education and environment for our students will likely go unmet.

S.T.A.R.S. is still working to reach its yearly philanthropic goal. We need help from the community in order to continue providing much needed services to low-income families in our community who are in need of assistance. In order to continue making a difference in the lives of individuals affected by the work of S.T.A.R.S. School for Autism, it is vital for us to meet this goal.

Join us on Friday, November 30, 2012 as S.T.A.R.S. School for Autism will be giving thanks and celebrating the advances made in the education and wellness of our students, at the 2nd Annual “Giving Thanks to the Different Colors of Autism.” The evening will begin at 6:00pm at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University, and will feature open galleries, food & drink, music, a raffle, a silent auction with prizes such as; a makeover at POSH Beauty Salon, tickets to see the Miami Heat, an inclusive trip to the 2013 Emmy Awards, and more! There will also be a very special surprise that will feature the students of S.T.A.R.S. displaying their many colors! A minimum donation of $25.00 per person will be collect upon entrance.
All proceeds for this event will go to support the education and therapies of the S.T.A.R.S. students. For more information on our program and contact information can be found on our website: www.starsautism.org.

Musicians, Surfers, Environmentalists and Friends collaborate on a Miami fundraiser to help power up the Rockaways, New York.

On Wednesday evening, November 28, 2012, a Hurricane Sandy benefit concert and documentary
screening will take place in Miami. Funds raised will help power up the communities of the Rockaways
in New York, a beachfront community that was hit by a 14 foot tidal surge that has left 23,000 residents
without power and in a critically damaged state.

Frustrated by the government’s turtle like response and worried about the approaching winter, musicians, surfers, environmentalists and friends in Miami are teaming up with Power Rockaways Resilience, a grassroots volunteer effort spearheaded by Walter Meyer and Jennifer Bolstad of Local Office Landscape Architecture, a husband-and-wife team working with planners, engineers and volunteers working to restore power to the residents of the Rockaways with solar powered generators.

Since electrical circuit boxes, wiring and heating systems have been inundated with salt water, solar generators can deliver power and heat to critical locations in the Rockaways, and can continue to supplement the grid with resilient power after the utilities power up again.

“The focus of this effort is not just about sustainability, but about resilience. We see the need on the ground in the Rockaways daily. The generosity of our friends in Miami will supply heat and power to alleviate suffering now, and will provide resiliency later.” Exclaimed Walter Meyer, whose fundraising efforts have already raised $13,482. He hopes friends in Miami will help double or even triple that amount.

The evening will feature :

More information about the writer and director, Wendy White can be found on her website: www.newlightgallery.org. Please visit: http://www.newlightgallery.org/paintingswendy/theater-resume.html

Spam Allstars were formed by Andrew Yeomanson, a/k/a DJ Le Spam, who was raised in Toronto, Bogota and London, and has called Miami home since 1993. He got his start by playing guitar in Haitian band Lavalas, and recording and touring with Miami based artist Nil Lara. Along the way he added to his vinyl collection, and when off the road he would DJ locally. These DJ gigs evolved into collaborations with live musicians, performing on an internet radio show, recording in his home studio, and the first of many residencies combining his samplers & DJ skills with a live band.

Red is strong and confident. Red is exciting and sexy. Red is joy and celebration. Red is life. The exhibition, “Inspired by RED” is imbued with the cultural relevance of the color red. In some works it is used literally to represent things that are naturally red, in others it is used as a metaphor. However, it is the underlying emotional qualities of the color that dominates the exhibit.

About Griselda Lechini

Artist Bio

Griselda Lechini is a painter best known for her impressionistic landscapes. Her subject matter includes forests (and the roads within them), flowers, and musical instruments.

Her distinctive style is characterized by vivid colors that emit energy.

Argentinean by birth, Griselda Lechini has made the United States her home since 2000. Following a successful modeling and television career, she has breathed and lived painting full time since 2008.

Her works are held in private collections in Louisiana, Florida, New York and Argentina and exhibited locally in the Design District in Miami.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

The trees in my hometown and my father’s farm always talked to me about their strength and beauty.

From my childhood I have always known I would become an artist. The mountains of Argentina revealed to me power; ancient mystery and a permanence that has followed me through the years.

My travels took me around the world, and in each country I have done my best to take in the culture and the rhythm of the people. I pour what I have absorbed into my work. My fascination with nature has taken me to remote locations in search of myself and the answers to questions we all ask ourselves: who I am I and what am I hear on earth to do?

I create art because it allows me to express my feelings of joy and wonder at the universe. My purpose is to paint; to create and to share my love of the brush and creativity with the world. To communicate with people through color and emotion.

And I truly believe my art impacts us in a positive and hopeful way. Where there is always something beautiful around the corner or behind a tree, even, hidden in the bright colors. Where magic is always possible.
