August is Black Business Month, Urban Philanthropies, in cooperation with Urban Pulse Direct present The Soft Launch of The Overtown Marketplace at The Urban, 1000 NW 2nd Ave., Miami, FL 33136 on Saturday, August 17th, 2019, 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM EDT.

The events will celebrate the revitalization of the Overtown District, one of Miami’s oldest and most historically significant neighborhoods. Adjacent to downtown Miami, the area was originally segregated from the rest of the city and was limited to housing black workers at the turn of the 20th century. Overtown eventually grew into a bustling enclave in the city where families and Black-owned businesses lined the streets and culture flourished, in spite of exclusionary BlackCodes and Jim Crow laws.

However, recent interest in revitalizing the area has seen great success thanks to the efforts of community volunteers, businesses, civic and philanthropic organizations. Hence, The Overtown Marketplace is one such space to proudly call the once-again burgeoning district home and seeks to become an iconic community-centric space that will celebrate the multitude of cultures upon which Miami was built. The space will feature seven carefully curated elements for the public to enjoy and utilize: events, vendors, food, art, The Chill, Content Corner, and culture.

The Overtown Marketplace is one such space to proudly call the once-again burgeoning district home and seeks to become an iconic community-centric space that will celebrate the multitude of cultures upon which Miami was built.

Leslie admits to have discovered traditional Cuban and Brazilian music as she reminisces about her family, in particular her cousins. They were the first to teach her nursery rhymes and accompany her on the guitar while she sang.

Caribbean, Afro-American, Afro-Latin, and Latin American musical rhythms create a harmonious fusion in her debut CD, “No Pares,” a 19-track production, 18 of which she composed. “In this CD, my first experience as co-producer and musical arranger, I had the opportunity of working with renowned musicians who supported me every step of the way,” said this attractive brunette, who defines herself as a happy, adventurous, inquisitive, expressive, but most of all a perfectionist woman. With the release of “No Pares,” Leslie went up to the fifth position on the Miami Latin Reverbnation Charts and got nominated for the 2013 Latin Grammy as Best New Artist. Amarillo Sky is brewed with an one-of-a-kind Amarillo hops. This popular variety of hops are responsible for the new beer’s citrus profile. Adventures in Songwriting is equal parts workshop, talk show, and new music generator. Award-winning singer / songwriter Jim Camacho will showcase all of the artists featured on Season 1 of the web series during a special evening of live music at the Mandelstam Theater in South Miami on Saturday, August 24, 2019, beginning at 8 p.m. All ages are welcome, and there is free parking available.

In addition to the house band consisting of the Camacho Brothers and others, plus special guests, the following acts are slated to appear:

The EDGE Charitable Foundation will host their 3rd Annual Queen Bees Conference to unite women who love their communities and believe in the power of service. This year’s conference will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Renaissance Ballroom.

The Queen Bees are an international women’s empowerment and wellness movement that unites women through camaraderie, networking, inspiration, education, wellness activities, and constant civic innovation. Queen Bees participate in monthly events that equip and enrich them with life and business skills. Each event amplifies their philanthropic efforts, with a percentage of the proceeds donated back to the EDGE Charitable Foundation, an organization that provides educational and humanitarian support to children who are victimized and/or disadvantaged. For every $125 raised, 5 children are directly impacted by the support they receive through The EDGE Charitable Foundation.

The theme for this year’s Queen Bees Conference is “Women Owning Wonderful” (WOW). The goal is to empower attendees with practical tools which will help them find their purpose, serve their communities and connect to other influential women in South Florida. During the conference, attendees will have the opportunity to hear various speakers on topics such as leadership, work/life balance, empowering women, breast health and preventative medicine. There will be two breaks during the morning portion of the event featuring a yoga and meditation session by Queen Bee Member Traci Cole as well as samba dancing led by Queen Bee Member Kristal Wise. The Queen Bees Experience is meant to unite over 200 members in a movement which is currently expanding across the country to additional states like New York and Tennessee.

Tom has been a fixture on the South Florida jazz scene for over twenty-five years. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Tom studied at the acclaimed Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and soon after began teaching at the University. He is currently the saxophone professor at Miami Dade College Kendall Campus.

Tom has performed with some of the biggest names in the business including: Sheila E., Arturo Sandoval, Nicole Henry, Mongo Santamaria, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, the O’Jays, Celia Cruz, Donna Summer, Patti Austin and Lou Rawls.

For many years he was the principal saxophonist with the Miami Symphony. Music has taken Tom around the world. He has performed throughout Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, Japan and India. Besides being a multi- instrumentalist, Tom is also an accomplished composer and arranger.

The contestants – models, actresses, TV hosts and performing artists – will compete in swimsuit, spokesmodel and couture gown competitions for a chance to win a cash and prize package valued at nearly $75k that includes modeling contracts, brand collaborations, TV hosting and other opportunities.

Headlining the show are Puerto Rican Hip Pop artist Estacks and Broadway Showtune vocalist Morgane Grace. A special guest appearance will be made by model & actor Jordan Kimball best known for his appearances on ABC’s hit shows The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise.

“Eat Your Heart Out,” Fort Lauderdale’s favorite food and “fun” raiser featuring gourmet creations, fresh libations, celebrity servers, live entertainment and a silent auction, returns to The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale on October 3 at 6 p.m. Presented by Lago Mar, this year’s highly anticipated event will benefit the Heart Gallery of Broward County, a respected nonprofit organization committed to finding loving families for the hardest to place foster children.

Attendees at “Eat Your Heart Out” presented by Lago Mar will be treated to a dazzling array of epicurean bites from a variety of popular restaurants including Angelo Elia Pizza, Bar & Tapas, Blue Martini, Café Maxx, Café Seville, Café Vico, Culinary Republic, Fitlife Foods, Il Mulino, Lips Fort Lauderdale, Moksha Indian Brasserie, Mayapapaya, Ocean 2000, Phat Boy Sushi & Kitchen, Riverside Market and Café, Serafina, Sweeter Days, Tarpon River Brewing, Taverna Opa, The Mermaid Bar – Neiman Marcus, Truluck’s and more.

Of Men and Gods is a documentary about homosexuality in Haiti, especially within the context on the Vodou religion where it is tolerated to a greater extent than in broader society. Coral Gables, FL- Cernuda Arte is pleased to present a stunning solo exhibition of works by Cuban-born artist, Vicente Hernández. Vicente Hernández: To Leave, or Not To Live, That Is The Question. Recent Works of Flight and Despair,
Opening Reception – Friday, August 2nd, from 6-9 pm at Cernuda Arte. The show will place a thematic focus on massive migrations of Cuban people, a contentious topic which runs centrally through the artist’s work.

While this new gathering marks the artist’s third solo show on American soil, Hernández still works from within the island of Cuba, vividly depicting the plight of its youth in their search for a better life of opportunities and freedoms.
His paintings, crafted with the vocabulary of magic realism, expose the absurdity of reality in Cuba and reinforce the intensity of hope of its people. The twenty-two canvases on view emphatically reflect a necessary voice and a true contrarian spirit.

Friday, July 26 at 8: Arts Garage presents pianist Kiki Sanchez. Sanchez is among the new generation of Afro-Peruvian Jazz musicians emerging on the national Jazz scene. Born in Lima, Peru, his musical interpretation is resounding. He leaves the listener with admiration and much anticipation for greater things to come from a musician of such high caliber.

His musical journey can be heard on his debut CD, “Dreams”. The music is enveloped in a smooth Latin Jazz format with a perfect balance of Afro-Peruvian rhythm and Jazz harmonies. He has proceeded to record seven additional albums, as varied as his “Salsa Project”, his “Jazz Big Band Project”, “Soneros del Perú”, and the devotional “I Praise You, Lord”. All have been well-recived by critics.

He has also produced an instructional DVD called “The Real Latin Piano and the introduction to Afro-Peruvian Rhythms”. In it, you’ll find essential musical knowledge that accentuates the building blocks of Latin music. It also offers a fresh introspective view on various Afro-Peruvian rhythms as applied to Jazz musicians.

Located 2000 kilometers from the Amazon and 18 hours from Rio, the city of Brasília—the capital of Brazil—is a mythical place: a concrete utopia born out of the desert. In 1956 at the rebirth of Brazilian democracy, visionary architect Oscar Niemeyer and urbanist Lúcio Costa invented an urban plan and structures that would attempt to micromanage the daily activity of human life. The unabashed goal was to create the space that would birth “the new Brazilian citizen.” Now the stark beauty of the city acts as a backdrop to isolation, changing values, and the dynamic power and politics of today’s Brazil. Delano South Beach, the iconic oceanfront hotel located on Collins Ave, will host a Bastille Day Weekend in partnership with French & Famous July 13-14. Les Standiford is Founding Director of the Creative Writing Program at Florida International University in Miami and the author of twenty-two books, including a series of thrillers starring hard-luck South Florida building contractor John Deal.

In Presidential Deal (1998), the First Lady, based loosely on Hillary Clinton, is kidnapped in Miami. (Don’t worry folks, it was all made up.)

He has also written works of history, including Last Train to Paradise: Henry Flagler and the Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Railroad that Crossed an Ocean, now in its 35th printing, and The Man Who Invented Christmas: How Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol Rescued His Career and Revived our Holiday Spirits, which was made into a feature film starring Dan Stevens and Christopher Plummer.

Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is thrilled to present Tom McCormick as part of its monthly “Jazz at MOCA” series. McCormick is a gifted multi-instrumentalist in addition to being an accomplished composer and arranger. He blends the sounds of Latin, Brazilian and funk-infused music with smooth jazz for a performance full of energy.

McCormick has been a prominent figure in the South Florida jazz scene for over 25 years. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, McCormick studied at the acclaimed Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and soon after he graduated, he began teaching at the University. He was previously the principal saxophonist of the Miami Symphony Orchestra for many years and currently is the saxophone professor at Miami Dade College.

McCormick has performed around the world including Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, Japan and India. McCormick has performed with some of the biggest names in the music industry including Sheila E., Arturo Sandoval, Nicole Henry, Mongo Santamaria, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, the O’Jays, Celia Cruz, Donna Summer, Patti Austin and Lou Rawls.
