WHO/WHAT: Thanks to Puerto Rican famed Chef José Mendín, America has National Mofongo Day; an entire day to celebrate the beloved Puerto Rican delight made of plantain and often stuffed with a variety of delicious goodies. On Saturday, September 24, just in time for Hispanic Heritage Month, Mendín and Colombian culinary brother-in-arms, Chef Cesar Zapata, are teaming up and throwing down.

Together, and as part of Phuc Yea’s six-year anniversary, the Chefs, along with fellow boricua-owner Ani Meinhold, are hosting the Second Annual National Mofongo Day extravaganza at their Michelin-recognized MiMo eatery Phuc Yea, which is known for breaking cultural boundaries with its Viet-Latin mash-ups.

What to expect at this ticketed event? A bevy of all-you-can-eat mofongo bites from both talented chefs, a Welcome Snaiquiri (snack-sized daiquiri cocktail), and DJ Safe Stadick spinning vinyl and old school salsa classics. Think vinyl, la Fania, lots of rum, Hector Lavoe, mofongo and a lively phuc-ing vibe. Just Phuc Yea being Phuc Yea…

Guests can also take advantage of specialty craft cocktails priced at $10 featuring fan favorites such as the Coco Chanel, made with Bly white rum, lime juice, sugar, apricot liquor and orange blossom; an Old Cuban Named Gio, prepared with Havana Club Classico, muddled herbage, angostura bitters and cava; and the Cuba Libre, mixed with Havana Club Classico, Coca-Cola and lime.

“As a professional chef who is deeply proud of my heritage, I will do anything I can to spotlight Puerto Rican food and culture,” says Mendín. “I’m so happy to be hosting another ‘National Mofongo Day’ party and happier to be doing it with Cesar, a chef I love and respect.”

Tickets to the event which include unlimited mofongo bites and a welcome cocktail are priced at $20 per person and can be pre-purchased. Tickets will also be available day of at the door for $25 per person.

WHEN/WHERE: The National Mofongo Day celebration will take place on Saturday, September 24 from 4PM to 7PM. Phuc Yea is located at 7100 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33138. For more information visit phucyea.com.

Johannesburg artist William Kentridge’s performance piece Ursonate, will be on view at NSU Art Museum, with screenings during museum hours, every hour on the half hour, 11:30 am to 3:30 pm. Based on dada artist Kurt Schwitters 1932 sound poem Ursonate, consisting entirely of a nonsense, invented language, Kentridge’s work is comprised of two film projections: one in which the artist emphatically gesticulates as he sounds the score accompanied by an opera singer and percussionist, while a constant flow of animated caligraphic images drawn by Kentridge are projected on the second screen. This exhibition coincides with the performance of Kentridge’s opera The Head & The Load at the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, Miami (December 1-3, 2022).

Conversations at MOCA is an ongoing public lecture series, aimed at bringing forward discourse on a variety of topics to engage our community of voices. This Conversation is part of the ongoing public programming around the ground breaking exhibition My Name is Maryan.

The Polish-born artist who came to be known as Maryan grew up in a traditional, working-class Jewish family, before being captured by the Nazis and imprisoned at various forced labor camps, as well as the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps. The sole survivor of his family, the young artist shed his name after the War and became Maryan in a radical act of self-definition. His iconoclastic, ground-breaking work, presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, speaks simultaneously of traumatic loss and the resilience of the human spirit.

Participants are invited to join a walk-through of this powerful exhibition followed by an inspiring conversation, as a panel of scholars explores the multiple and profound connections between Maryan’s biography and oeuvre and the concepts of identity and memory. Panelists include Dr. Helen Sachs Chaset, Board Member, Miami Dade Holocaust Survivors; Dr. Luna Goldberg, Education Manager, Jewish Museum of Florida, FIU; and Dr. Rebecca Friedman, Director, Wolfsonian Public Humanitites Lab, FIU. The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Martin Palouš, Director, Václav Havel Program for Human Rights and Diplomacy at FIU. This event will be co-sponsored by Ruth K. and Shepard Broad Distinguished Lecture Series.

MOCA is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month by reading “Where Are You From?” written by Yamile Saied Méndez and illustrated by Jaime Kim. When a girl is asked where she’s from, where she’s really from, none of her answers seems to be the right one until she asks her loving Abuelo for help. After the reading, participants are invited to create their own watercolor paintings of where they are from. Sponsored by the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency, this early childhood art series engages toddlers and fosters reading, motor skill development and socialization. MOCA Sunday Stories is a great way for children to bond with their parents or guardians as they create together.

House of Horror Haunted Carnival (HOH) has been scaring the living daylights out of the so-called unafraid. With four new haunted house experiences, a midway filled with unlimited carnival rides, food, and games, caretakers also vow to spook unsuspecting victims with every turn on their new Fireball Rollercoaster.

Beginning September 29 at 6PM, people can take their chances working their way through four terrifyingly, haunted experiences inside an abandoned department store at Miami International Mall. The following haunted experiences have been completely re-done to maximize their scare factor:

• The Silent Mall – Shhh….This is where Misshhhell will unleash her own level of “hell”. Try and stay quiet, if you dare.
• DrownTown – The undead are overflowing at this abandoned town seeking their revenge. Be quick about it, or risk becoming a permanent resident.
• Insanitorium – If by now your nerves are shot, don’t worry. Former patients have taken over the treatment of nervous breakdowns. Do check in. No health insurance required.
• Scare X Studios – Cleared of “almost” all paranormal activity, this immersive experience is where gaming and imagination takes center stage.

For 20 years, Miami International Mall has served as the ideal spot for this spooky, month-long adventure. Those fun-filled nights only get better on the HOH midway where a ticket to the haunted experiences also gives family and friends access to unlimited carnival rides and games. It’s also where overindulgence is highly encouraged given the large assortment of treats and carnival foods. Just be sure to rally enough courage to ride The Fireball Rollercoaster, which is a first this year.

Tickets are currently on sale for House of Horror Haunted Carnival at Miami International Mall. Doors open on September 29 and remain open every Tuesday through Sunday, all the way to Monday, October 31. HOH plans to incorporate special themed nights, including an adult Costume Contest on Halloween night, so be sure to follow them on social media for those drop dates!

Kick off National Bourbon Heritage Month at Whiskey Neat Thursday, September 1 at 6:30 p.m. Our voyage will be led by Whisk(e)y Brand Ambassador of Pernod Ricard USA, Robert Ferrara and The Lazy Oyster Miami!

Enjoy a complimentary Jefferson’s Small Batch Summer Cocktail followed by an introduction to Whiskey. Our voyage begins with a sit down tasting of three unique Whiskey’s from Jefferson’s Ocean Aged at Sea line. Voyage 26 Ocean Aged Rye, Voyage 25 Ocean Aged Wheated and the extra special, Limited Edition Voyage 24 Ocean Aged Bourbon paired with three selected seasonal oysters from The Lazy Oyster. The Lazy Oyster is Miami’s first traveling oyster bar. What started in 2020 as an oyster delivery service has evolved into a full raw bar catering service and pop-up experience with special curated seasonal Oyster menus.

We are offering 2 tiers of tickets:

  • General Admission – $50pp includes a Jefferson’s summer cocktail with the tasting of three Whiskey’s and three Oysters.
  • VIP – $125pp includes a Jefferson’s summer cocktail, tasting of three Whiskey’s and Oysters plus, a complimentary bottle of the Limited Edition Fort Lauderdale Voyage 24 Ocean aged at Sea Bourbon.

Why is Voyage 24 Aged at Sea Bourbon so special? The driving force behind Voyage 24 Bourbon was to introduce a new experiment to the Jefferson’s Ocean Line. While other voyages traveled across the equator several times experiencing both hot and cold temperatures, Voyage 24 set sail right in our backyard from Port Everglades and spent most of its time aging in the Caribbean! Get your VIP ticket fast — Voyage 24 bottles are limited availability!

Please note that this is a private event. Have your tickets ready.

The festival begins on Wednesday, October 19th with “An Evening at Joe’s Stone Crab.” Next up, “Crabs, Slabs & Cabs,” takes place the following evening and offers a formal sit-down, five-course dinner highlighting ‘Surf n’ Turf’ reimagined by some of the Magic City’s leading chefs. The event is hosted by GOYA Foods’ Executive Chef Fernando Desa and includes participation from celebrated restaurateur and Pubbelly Sushi partner José Mendín; Fiola Miami’s Executive Chef Danny Ganem; and Meat Market Executive Chef and Owner Sean Brasel, among others. On Friday evening, the gloves come off as 16 of Miami’s top chefs go head-to-head in eight competitive seafood rounds during the annually sold out “Chef Showdown,” coined the ultimate beach bash on South Beach. To commemorate the festival’s 10-year anniversary, one participating chef with the most points of the night will take home a grand prize of $10,000. The series of nightly events builds up to the main celebration, the “South Beach Seafood Festival,” an all-day affair taking place on Saturday, October 22, showcasing a selection of pop-up-cafés by prominent South Florida restaurants, complimentary open bar stations, and packed with live musical performances, interactive experiences, and much more for guests to enjoy.

Sometimes what happens after the last call just might change your life. Jamie is a young aspiring pianist working as a bartender. He is closing up for the night when a desperate last-minute customer enters and offers him and his girlfriend Abby two thousand dollars to sit and have a drink with him. Guests can dine in the 226-seat dining room, anchored by an open-air churrasco bar, while watching gaucho chefs showcase the culinary art of churrasco as they butcher, prepare and grill different cuts of meat over an open flame. Guests can also enjoy the expansive outdoor patio for al fresco churrasco dining or meet with friends at the lively indoor Bar Fogo.

Fogo offers a variety of flavors ranging from premium filet mignon to bone-in cowboy rib-eye, decadent beef ribs and lamb chops; and house specialties like picanha (prime cut of the top sirloin) and fraldinha (bottom sirloin with strong marbling for robust flavor).
