A battle for the ages descends on Downtown Homestead on July 30th. Two universes collide like two cocktail glasses in a dark bar. But they aren’t cheering for good health and good fortune but to which side will retain supremacy after all.

Justice League versus The Avengers, Marvel versus DC. Settle the score for good at Seminole Theatre for a pub crawl of epic proportions. Come as you are or represent your favorite superhero or superheroine, for a scavenger hunt through Homestead’s historic dive bars. There will be $3 and $5 drink specials at each stop along the way. Starting at Seminole Theatre Pub, and crawling to the American Legion, City Hall Bistro Martini Bar, Simmons, and Chefs on the Run for some grub.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) concludes its Summer Chamber Music Series on Friday, July 22, at the Center for Spiritual Living Fort Lauderdale. This performance will offer music lovers a chance to enjoy the classics in a more personal, intimate atmosphere.

The final Summer Program III will feature Huifang Chen (violin), Catherine Lan (piano), Claudio Jaffe (cello) and Felicia Besan (viola) performing the world premiere of Composer-in-residence John.Gottsch’s Impromptu No. 3 for Cello and Piano, Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor, K478, and Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat, Op. 47.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) concludes its Summer Chamber Music Series on Thursday, July 21, at Temple Israel of Greater Miami. This performance will offer music lovers a chance to enjoy the classics in a more personal, intimate atmosphere.

The final Summer Program III will feature Huifang Chen (violin), Catherine Lan (piano), Claudio Jaffe (cello) and Felicia Besan (viola) performing the world premiere of Composer-in-residence John.Gottsch’s Impromptu No. 3 for Cello and Piano, Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor, K478, and Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat, Op. 47.

HIV activist and “Busting Stigma” author Jesse Brooks will address the social issues of being African American, gay and HIV positive during “Black Men Speak: The Impact of HIV on the Black Community,” Island City Stage’s last Behind the Red Curtain public forum of its 10th anniversary season. This free forum precedes the South Florida premiere of Donja R. Love’s “One in Two,” debuting on August 4. This important panel discussion will also feature:

• Justin Jones, CEO, The Rapha Center

The forum will be moderated by World AIDS Museum and Educational Center Executive Director Terry Dyer.

Directed by Moxie Theatre in San Diego co-founder and NAACP theatre award-winner Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, “One in Two” refers to the current HIV projection rate that 1 in 2 black men who have sex with men (MSM) and 1 in 4 Latino MSM in the United States will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetime, according to a 2016 analysis by researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Unlike other plays, in this production, the audience chooses nightly which actor must portray the lead character in this unforgiving story of a Black man diagnosed with HIV. Through humor and pathos, Donja R. Love has written a deeply personal call to action and created an unflinching portrait of being Black and gay in America today.

Activist, filmmaker, photographer, and columnist, Jesse Brooks is currently co-chair of the Bay Area State of Emergency Coalition (BASE), advocacy coordinator of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation of Northern California, and co-chair of UCSF/CAPS Research Community Advisory Board, and a weekly columnist for the largest African American paper in the Bay Area, Post News Group. He has worked on multiple research studies, including studies for the San Francisco Department of Public Health HIV Research Division on the now famous “Explore Study” (Men who have Sex with Men, sexual behaviors and HIV transmissions) and University California San Francisco’s Urban Health Study (HIV transmissions among the IDU community). Brooks co-wrote and starred in “The Ceremony,” a movie about internal battles, addiction, internal homophobia, and internalized stigma around HIV status, which showed at the 2006 Black LGBT film festival. He was part of Corner Stone Productions, the first-ever theatre group allowed in a County Jail (Santa Rita) to present vignettes involving HIV awareness and education, sponsored by Gilead Sciences. He was involved in the PBS documentary “The End game: HIV/AIDS in Black America” and his work has been featured in numerous HIV education campaigns and a tabletop picture book with actor Danny Glover and Congresswoman Barbara Lee, entitled “This Could Be Me: The real story of HIV/AIDS in Oakland.”

OutFit – an innovative mobile fitness service bringing convenient, affordable, expertly-led private training and group fitness classes to parks and neighborhoods – will host “Ladies Morning Out” at The City of Plantation’s Central Park on July 16 at 7:15 a.m. Participants will endure a heart pumping, muscle building, full body workout while enjoying the fresh air. The 50-minute workout class will consist of 25 minutes of HIIT followed by 25 minutes of Zumba®. After the class, participants will enjoy healthy snacks and beverages.

Led by “Outfitter in Charge” Michelle Correa, the signature full body HIIT (high intensity interval training) Strength Circuit targets strength and conditioning with intense efforts and short rest periods while utilizing a color training system that keeps individuals challenged. Participants will do multiple sets of each exercise that provide maximum strength benefits while short rest periods ensure some cardiovascular development. The class includes four training stations featuring two exercises each highlighting mobility, stability, strength, power, core and cardio movements. All rounds consist of eight sets with duration options of 40 seconds (green), an optional push of 10 seconds (yellow), and either 25 seconds or 15 seconds of rest (white). There is also a 60 second strength boost after the last set at each station.

“Outfitter in Charge” and Zumba® certified instructor Laura White will lead a heartrate-boosting, dance party! Zumba® incorporates different body weight movements paired perfectly with the fast and slow rhythms of the music.

Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre is thrilled to bring an exhilarating production about musical legend, Hank Williams, to the iconic Coral Gables theatre. Hank Williams: Lost Highway is a spectacular musical biography that follows the legendary singer-songwriter’s rise from his beginnings on the Louisiana Hayride to his triumphs on the Grand Ole Opry to his eventual self-destruction at twenty-nine.
The production will run for a limited time only with previews taking place on July 13 and 14, and the official opening night on Friday, July 15. Showtimes are Wednesdays – Saturdays at 8 p.m., with matinees on Sunday at 3 p.m. through July 31. A special weekday matinee will take place on Wednesday, July 20 at 2 p.m.

Compositum Musicae Novae (CMN) invites you to view the exhibit Beyond the Woods one last time during the exhibit’s closing reception on Friday, July 1 from 6:30 – 9:00 pm.

In portraying the woods, artists often evoke a romantic mix of natural beauty and mysticism reminiscent of stories read in childhood. The exhibit, Beyond the Woods, presents a group of artists that expand on the representation of the woods as a place where people come to contemplate the streams and waterfalls and to which lovers sneak away. Some works are formal inquiries into traditional mediums, while others are more experimental, blending different disciplines and techniques; collectively; the exhibit creates a magical journey. So come and enjoy the forest creatures, the song of falling leaves, the echoes of nature, and the repeated patterns of all who have walked through the woods before you.

The exhibit curated by Cuqui Beguiristain features eighteen South Florida artists including: Alberto Mesa, Derek Wilson, Ernie Rodriguez, Gene Page,
George Rodez, Jane Krause, Jorge Ballara, Laurie Julia, Luisa Mesa, MANO,
Macarena Zilveti, Mila Hajjar,Odilia Mezquia, Roseè Camafreita,

In collaboration with the exhibit closing CMN is happy to present a classical music performance featuring the music of Ralph Vaughn-Williams with guest tenor, Andres Lasaga and pianist, Andrea DeVito.

History Fort Lauderdale, celebrating 60 years of being the proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “Tranquil Tropics: The Art of Tim Forman & Friends” from Sunday, July 10 through Sunday, September 11. This all-new summer art exhibit featuring Forman’s award-winning work alongside lauded local artists including Linda Apriletti, Hitomi Saito, Diane Delorey, Tammy Seymour, Danielle Perry and Connie Commette will focus on Florida’s tropical beauty and its conservation. The exhibit will open with an artist group meet and greet reception at noon on July 10 at the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue).

Tim Forman is the third generation of Formans to have been born and reared in South Florida. He first picked-up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives.

All of the works will be exhibited in a newly renovated art space on the first level of the New River Inn. Visitors may also donate $10 to the museum to be entered into a raffle to win an original Tim Forman 12” x 24” artwork entitled “Beach Surf.” The winner will be announced on Sept. 12 (need not be present to win).

Entry to the exhibit is free with general admission – $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). One of the artist who shaped the graffiti art movement we know and love today is Steven D. Ogburn (b. 1957), better known as Blade, a famed New York-born artist and a proud owner of the title King of the Trains since he painted over five thousand trains with his striking characters and elegant letters. Famous for his whole subway cars, he became an icon of New York City and a hero-figure for the younger generation of street artists. Blade stopped painting trains in 1984 as he felt that he had nothing more to prove. Additionally, he began working in other media including acrylic on canvas, producing artworks suitable for indoor exhibitions that have brought him worldwide recognition. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is kicking off summer with a new, free virtual audience participation dance session. Part of the Broward Center’s All Abilities Series, Summer Dancing in the Sand! is led by teaching artist Tara Goodman who will take the audience through an exciting dance celebration with music that will have viewers on their feet.

No experience is needed as Goodman takes the audience through dance moves step-by-step. The session is open to the public, and the audience is encouraged to bring sunglasses and hats to dance in the comfort and safety of their homes or outdoors. The Zoom link to join the session is available at Broward Center’s website.

This free virtual event for the neurodiverse community is made possible through the generous support of The Taft Foundation. Special thanks to UM-NSU CARD for their continued in-kind support.

Create a sculpture inspired by artists exploring mysterious and magical mushrooms. Look at the works of Roxy Paine, Beatrix Potter, Yayoi Kusama, Amanda Cobbett, and others. Advance reservations are required, space is limited.

Creativity Exploration adult workshops promote the benefits of creative exploration and the mind-to-body experience. Studies have shown that 45 minutes of creative activity a day reduces stress and offers mental clarity and relaxation. In addition to producing a sense of well-being, sessions expand participants’ perceptions of forms, while increasing brain connectivity through visual and cognitive stimulation. The workshop is led by educator Lark Keeler, a specialist in mindfulness education.

On Saturday, June 25th, Jumbee will be rocking the turntables at Alton Food Hall! Alton Food Hall is the latest food hall concept to debut in Miami Beach, with over 160 seats, both indoors and outdoors, officially opening April 30. Designed with locals in mind, this modern space inspired by classic Miami showcases a range of local favorites as well as a handful of stand-out national champions, promising to establish itself as the “go-to” spot that locals and visitors alike seek to tame their cravings or grab a refreshing innovative cocktail.
