The Betsy-South Beach is proud to present a week-long homage to Overtown, a legacy community rich in culture and entertainment. As Ocean drive gears up for its annual Art Deco weekend, the Betsy South Beach has released the schedule for its second annual Art Deco Jazz Week filled with musical performances by some of the greatest jazz musicians playing iconic, legendary tunes. Dynamic interdisciplinary events for Martin Luther King Day round out the week.
Starting Tuesday, January 15, 2013, guests can enjoy the sexy sounds of jazz, while being transported to an era filled with soul and good vibes. The musical line-up features acclaimed talents such as Overtown jazz legends Mel Dancy and Bobby Stringer with local B-3 organ icon Ken Burkhart on piano, legendary master pianist Don Friedman, with Reuben Hoch, drums and Tom Lippincott, guitar as well as fusion jazz from the Nestor Zurita Trio. Mike Gerber, a hearing-impaired virtuoso pianist, who is also blind, appears on January 16. All performances are free and open to the public in Betsy’s Salon where Live (Mostly Jazz) Music takes place every Wednesday and Thursday night. Outstanding students from the Jazz Vocal program at UM’s Frost School of Music round out the roster. Please check performance schedule.
On Monday, January 21, on the day commemorating Martin Luther King’s birth, a special art exhibit addresses themes of spirituality. Presented in illuminated light boxes as a call and response to the links between spirituality and art are From Ashe’ to Amen- an exhibit featuring African Americans and Biblical imagery; presented in partnership with the Museum of Biblical Arts in NYC, curated by Dr. Leslie King Hammond. Attendees will enjoy a sneak peek to an exhibit that opens in New York in February. Also on display Kenneth Treister’s Eight Days of Creation, in partnership with the Susan and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies at the University of Miami. Treister is best known for the city of Miami Beach’s Holocaust Memorial. Bass baritone Lloyd Reshard will kick off the program at 3 p.m., which also includes a tribute to Dr. Mary Graham Wooten in honor of her lifelong dedication to the community. Kenneth Treister speaks at 6 p.m. in BBar on MLK Day with Poet John Murillo reading Langston Hughes; closing remarks come from Dr. Leslie King Hammond, Founder of the Center for Race and Culture and Curator of From Ashe’ to Amen.
Presented by the Betsy South Beach with Overtown Music Project, University of Miami Miller Jewish Center, Miami Lighthouse, Mapping Miami and the Betsy Community Fund, with a cornerstone literary program supported by the Knight Foundation. The Betsy-South Beach is a luxury boutique hotel that has become an epicenter for arts and cultural programs in Miami regularly hosting art exhibitions, musical performances and literary salons that are free and open to the public.
