His name was Mr. Henry Stone he is known as the man who founded the “Miami Sound”. With over 25 million records sold during the 70s TK Records based out of Hialeah started the world -wide music movement that placed Miami on the international map of entertainment.

Riff Rockit, one of the most popular performers in the growing musical genre “kindie rock” is coming to South Florida for a special concert to benefit the Love Jen Cancer Fund of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. The high energy performance will take place at Revolution LIVE in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, September 29 at 3 p.m.

Evan Michael, a.k.a. Riff Rockit, headlines the band which entertains kids and their parents with inspiring songs and positive messages. Born and raised in Fort Lauderdale to musical parents, the singer-songwriter’s love of music began at an early age. Evan was clapping to the beat on his first birthday and by age 10 was jamming on a six-string guitar. At age 15 he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and underwent intensive chemo treatments at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. His cancer went into remission. Two years later he relapsed and required a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Music was Evan’s way of coping during this dark and difficult time.

Thanks to the care and treatment Evan received at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, he’s been cancer free since 2001. After this life altering experience, he made a conscious decision to follow his dream. He studied at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music and graduated in 2007. He now lives his passion and tours the country entertaining, inspiring, educating and uplifting children under the alter ego of Riff Rockit.

Theo Von Ungern-Sternberg / Zuma

Located inside the EPIC Hotel in the heart of Downtown Miami, Zuma is one of the most celebrated restaurants in the city. Known for its innovative Japanese cuisine, the restaurant also has one of the best bar programs in town. In this week’s episode, Chat Chow TV sat down with the man behind the bar, Beverage Manager Theo Von Ungern-Sternberg.

The bar program at Zuma, notes Von Ungern-Sternberg, not only utilizes authentic Japanese equipment to prepare the drinks, but also uses influences from the restaurant’s kitchen to come up with their creative cocktails.

“A lot of the techniques were perfected in the kitchen and spread into the bar,” says Von Ungern-Sternberg. “For instance, the foam that we’re using here was born in the pastry kitchen.”

The restaurant also boats an on-site lab where they perfect their cocktails, an impressive assortment of shochu – an authentic distilled spirit from Japan – and a licensed sake sommelier on staff.

“In fact, all the assistant managers and above you find at the restaurant at the moment are licensed sake navigators.” Von Ungern-Sternberg adds.

Curious where Von Ungern-Sternberg likes to drink on his days off? What he thinks of Miami’s growing cocktail culture? Or whether he views himself as a bartender or a mixologist? Watch the video above to find out.

Launching Wednesday, September 25 with Top Chef alum Chef Lindsay Autry, ”KITCHEN COLLAB” is a trio of monthly special guest chef dinners which are sure to set tongues wagging and mouths watering.

In terms of themes and cooking styles, each kitchen collaboration (hence the series’ name) will differ but the end result will be the same – an unforgettable culinary experience featuring a not-to-be-repeated multi-course dinner created by DeRosa and truly talented guest chefs. Each dinner will be priced at $75 per person, excluding tax/tip/alcohol; featuring five amazing courses and some special surprises along the way. Seating is limited and tickets must be purchased in advance via http://tandcmiami.brownpapertickets.com/. Start time: 7:00 p.m.

Additional editions of “KITCHEN COLLAB” will follow on Thursday, October 17 with Chef Clay Conley of Palm Beach’s Buccan and Imoto fame and Chef Paula DaSilva on Wednesday, November 20, who recently took the helm of 3030 Ocean at the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale.

Chef Lindsay Autry was born and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina where she inherited a love of cooking at an early age, entering 4H cooking competitions. Spending time on her grandfather’s peach farm and alongside her Greek grandmother in the kitchen are among her childhood influences. Chef Lindsay describes her cuisine as “Southern soul meets world,” a combination of nostalgic favorites and Mediterranean flavors. With “farm-to-table” as a way of life growing up, Lindsay still takes her cues from seasonal, locally harvested ingredients when creating her classic yet refined dishes. A graduate of Johnson & Wales University in Miami, Lindsay honed her classic French cooking techniques under the James Beard Award-winning chef Michelle Bernstein, starting as a line cook at Azul at the Mandarin Oriental in Miami. Lindsay served as Executive Chef at the Omphoy Ocean Resort & Michelle Bernstein Restaurant in Palm Beach, Sous Chef at Fiesta Americana Grand Aqua in Cancun and she received international acclaim as the Chef de Cuisine at Las Brisas at the Fairmont in Playa del Carmen. She was named a Restaurant Hospitality “Rising Star” in 2008 and was one of three finalists on the 2011-12 season of Top Chef Texas. She is currently the Executive Chef at Sundy House Historic Inn, Restaurant and Botanical Garden as well as the Resident Chef for Swank Table in Loxahatchee Groves.

Miguel Rodez Art Projects is pleased to present the second iteration of it’s focus on the drawing medium. The gallery’s initial show Drawn from Within was a huge success when it was unveiled in September 2012. The 2013 version contrasts techniques and styles that offer huge conceptual diversity within the gallery’s space. Curating such a show is no easy task; you will be the judge who will mercilessly deliver the verdict with a thumbs up or down. There is no in-between here.

As the previous show, Drawing Exploration II explores the versatility of the drawing medium and features works in graphite, ink and charcoal. Some of the pieces offered are huge works while others are huge only in their impact.

Elegant fluid lines guide the viewers through vortexes of the dynamic work of one artist. These are contrasted against somber thought-provoking pieces with a more spiritual spin. A refined organic morphism piece is bound to draw attention to itself. Other pieces take on the challenge of portraiture. Henry Flagler, for example, gets a contemporary makeover by one artist who treated one of Florida’s most famous pioneers to a gentle doze of deconstruction, while another work treats the viewer to the impeccable refinement of classic academic technique.

Drawing Exploration II takes place at Miguel Rodez Art Projects space during the award-winning Bird Road Art Walk, which is held the 3rd Saturday of each month, just east of Tropical Park. Open to the public every third Saturday of the month in this Historic Art District.

Chef Adrianne Calvo Dark Dining Eyes Wide Shut Masquerade Ball Event 9/20/13

Chef Adrianne Calvo Dark Dining Eyes Wide Shut Masquerade Ball Event
darkdiningFriday, September 20, 2013
Coral Gables Country Club
990 Alhambra Circle
Coral Gables, Florida

Tickets and More Info.

Chef Adrianne Calvo, the innovating Miami, Florida-based culinary artist who has forged a formidable reputation in the area’s restaurant scene, is pleased to announce the very first Dark Dining event to take place outside of the charming confines of her eponymous and critically acclaimed eatery. The Dark Dining Eyes Wide Shut Masquerade Ball, a formal gala event that will serve to contribute to one of the most established pediatric charitable causes in the country.

Long considered one of Miami-Dade County’s preeminent venues for social and charity events, the Coral Gables Country Club was selected as a location capable of offering the ideal combination of elegance and style in which to commemorate what promises to be a momentous evening. A portion of all proceeds from the proceedings will benefit Chef Adrianne’s Make It Count Foundation and St. Jude’s Children’s and Research Hospital.

The Dark Dining format, which entails that participants remain fully blindfolded in a particularly dimly lit setting to heighten their enjoyment of a multiple course meal, was initially established as a social trend in Europe. Beginning in September 2009, Chef Adrianne became the pioneer of the Dark Dining phenomenon in the South Florida culinary scene by hosting three like-themed events at her Vineyard Restaurant and Wine Bar that fall. Previously, Dark Dining events had been implemented in several major U.S. cities, but Miami had remained an untapped market. Always willing to embrace the new and unique in the culinary field, Chef Adrianne and her staff have progressively established the Dark Dining concept over the last 4 years as a required experience for food aficionados in South Florida.

“We’ve been extremely pleased with the ambiance and energy that each of our previous Dark Dining nights has infused into our restaurant,” commented Chef Adrianne. “When the opportunity was presented to leverage its increasing popularity to raise the profile of a cause as important as St. Jude’s, it became our mission to take this unique experience to the next level.”

Chef Adrianne has enjoyed a near-decade long relationship with Memphis, Tennessee-based St. Jude’s Children’s and Research Hospital, which serves as the leading private pediatric oncology research institute in the United States. Now in its 51st year of serving pediatric cancer patients and their families, St. Jude’s is staffed by a considerably distinguished and accomplished collection of doctors, nurses, researchers, and support personnel. For the past several years, Chef Adrianne and many of her staff have conducted annual week-long visits to St. Jude’s, during which they attempt to bring comfort and respite to the terminally ill children and their parents and caregivers.

The Dark Dining Eyes Wide Shut Masquerade Ball will enhance the already vivid experience of a conventional Dark Dining event by incorporating live music, costume, and entertainment within a picturesque locale.

Opening Reception for Alberto Baraya and FIU Faculty Exhibitions at the Frost Art Museum 9/18/13

Opening Reception for Alberto Baraya and FIU Faculty Exhibitions at the Frost Art Museum
frostmuseum-09-13-13Wednesday, September 18, 2013, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum,
10975 SW 17th Street
Miami, FL 33199

Admission: Free

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU opens its fall 2013 season with renowned Colombian artist Alberto Baraya’s Naturalism/Artificiality: Expeditions, and Research of the Herbarium of Artificial Plants, and exhibitions of the works of two FIU faculty members, Michael Namkung and Pip Brant. An opening reception for all of these exhibits will be held at the Museum on Wednesday, September 18, from 6 to 9 pm. Refreshments will be served and the reception is open to the public and free of charge.

Alberto Baraya:
For more than a decade, Colombian artist Alberto Baraya has produced works of art which question and parody the agendas and empirical objectivity of seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth-century European expeditions that purported to scientifically collect and quantify the indigenous flora, fauna and peoples of the Americas. His exhibition presents his findings and projects based on travels to Acre, Bogotá, Gainesville, Indianapolis, Long Beach and Machu Picchu, and includes selected works from the series Herbarium of Artificial Plants, The Fable of the Birds, and Anthropometries.
In his Herbarium of Artificial Plants, Baraya uses found objects such as silk, plastic or glass flowers and leaves, to create beautiful taxonomies. Science and art are combined with drawings and annotations related to his research, as well as to the social and political implications of his findings. Perhaps the most ambitious project of the Herbarium series is the Latex Tree, originally produced for the 27th São Paulo Biennial. The outer layer of the latex tree was peeled off from the man-produced tree and exhibited during the Biennial. In addition to presenting a visually striking piece, the project provided a commentary on the exploitation of rubber in nineteenth-century Brazil. The Fable of the Birds features photographs of stuffed birds, typical of the Americas, leading the viewer to different ways of contemplating controlled landscapes: the landscape of dissected and stuffed birds as a scientific instrument and their relationship to the landscape of their natural habitat. Anthropometries focuses on anthropometry, a tool for early physical anthropology that was used to identify and understand the human and physical variations and to correlate these characteristics to ethnic and racial factors. In these works, Baraya revises not only the archaeological exploration of Machu Picchu, but proposes a reflection on the idea of "discovery" of a culture by the hands of another, having his measurements taken with an anthropometric caliper by natives and tourists from all over the world. Baraya’s exhibition, curated by Francine Birbragher, will run through January 5, 2014. It is part of the Frost Art Museum’s 2013 series of exhibitions: Commemorating 500 Years: Spain-Florida-Caribbean.

Faculty Show
Recording people or events, personal or historic, has typically been done through photography and/or sketching or painting, where the aim is to capture an instant in time that can be looked back on over the passing years so that future generations can see exactly what certain things, events and people looked like at a given point in time. Two Florida International University faculty members have, however, come up with their own unique, individual approaches to depicting and commemorating different stages of life: infancy (the beginning of life) and war (often the last stage of life). Their art will be on display at the Frost Art Museum through October 13.

Michael Namkung, 2013, 2. Results suggest that the umbilical cord cutting experience benefits the father’s emotional involvement with the neonate, 10/18/12, 11 weeks, 12 minutes, Courtesy of the Artist
Michael Namkung is an Assistant Professor, in FIU’s Department of Art + Art History, and describes himself as "an interdisciplinary artist who works in physical exercise, drawing, performance, video, installation and social practice." Namkung’s Baby Pictures and the People’s Lullaby Collective is an art exhibition about babyhood and parenting that involves a series of 26 baby pictures, a multilingual lullaby collection, the world’s largest foam alphabet floor, and a program of unique drawing activities for babies, toddlers and their caregivers. Baby Pictures is a display of images created from a drawing system that recorded the physical movements of Namkung’s newborn son on the floor. Resembling inkblots more than photographs, these Baby Pictures represent a father’s effort to capture an image of a human condition that is constantly disappearing.

The People’s Lullaby Collective part of the exhibition is a social art project and a unique opportunity for the public to become a vital part of creating an artwork. Participation is easy; simply use the voice recorder on your smart phone to capture the lullabies sung to your infant or toddler when the child is put to sleep at night. Then, text or email the recording to michaelnamkung@gmail.com (by no later than Friday, September 13). The idea is not to make a perfect recording, but to collect the sounds of the lullaby-singing process as it naturally occurs. According to Namkung, "By sharing this ritual, you document the intimacy shared with your child, give voice to the complex emotions that come with the job of raising children, and honor the work that caregivers do. This is a call to mothers, fathers, grandparents, and caregivers of any kind, in a ny language." The final part of the exhibition, This is Where Meaning is Made, is another opportunity for interactive parent/caregiver-infant/toddler experiences. Namkung will install a 900-square-foot interlocking foam alphabet tile mat that will cover the entire gallery floor. "This will activate the ground plane, and allow parents to easily put their children down to play on, and with, the floor," he said. "Finally, I am inviting parents to bring their baby or toddler to the gallery on three Saturdays during the exhibition (September 21 and 28, and October 12), from 10:00 am-noon, for a special drawing activity that is a combination of drawing and physical exercise called Drawing Gym. Toddlers can make drawings while doing wall sits, inchworms, and vertical jumps; for pre-crawlers, I will help your newborn or infant make his or her own tummy-time drawings."

Pip Brant, Little Big Horn, 2013, Oil and acrylic, 32 x 61 inches, Courtesy of the Artist
Pip Brant is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Art History, and her exhibition, Re-enactments, presents a collection of her paintings and embroidery which offers an alternative to recreations of historical events through re-enactments of famous battles or war in general, or their depiction through conventional photography, paintings and embroidery. While conceding that re-enactments and more conventional art are important and popular means of capturing and replicating history, Brant notes that, "Even though there are attempts at authenticity, this is an impossible task. A degrading of the actual battles happens. Political correctness can further pollute the forgotten truths. With my works, I am trying to decompose these events even more, with the removal and color conversions of visual information. The question I want to play with has to do with color switches and abstractions that sweeten the gory truths usually romanticized by traditional panor amic historical painting and embroidery. I want to see color convey the content."
Also opening on September 18 at the Frost Art Museum, in its Wolfsonian Teaching Gallery, is Crisis and Commerce: World’s Fairs of the 1930s.

This current September marks the one-year path of THE KULT, an underground fashion boutique that opened as a Pop-up, and has grown to now establish itself as one of Miami’s coolest, affordable, and local, street-fashion hubs.

This coming Thursday, Pamela Wasabi opens one more time THE KULT doors, but this time for good. Finding a permanent location to her store in Miami’s Mimo District. A neighborhood, which is transforming itself to be the locals’ home and favorite area, bistro and restaurant strip, and pedestrian friendly streets.

THE KULT is now located at the white, polka-dotted Studio Building on 79th street and Biscayne Blvd. A completely renovated property, by Group 69, now home to artists, the popular children’s clothing store Loud Girl Exchange, Guarapo Juice Bar, and Flash Studios.

This time round marks a new location, revamped look, and a new chapter for THE KULT. We also celebrate our new partnership with Flash Studios. A chic, eclectic hair salon headed by talented Christina Silvia and Natasha Love. Together Flash Studios and THE KULT are building a production team to provide the full service of hair, make-up, styling and art direction for fashion shows, photo shoots, movie/video sets, and events.

Our store will continue to carry all favorite brands like Betsey Johnson, Lip Service, Hips and Hair, and TRIPP NYC. We are also very happy to host local brands and designers like We Love Colors, Deep Antiquity, Agencie No9, Kusuri, NAZ Designs, Lovebirds, and Alessandra Gold at the store. THE KULT will also be launching a new consignment/thrift section.

Ca’d’oro Gallery Lands In Miami’s Design District With A Grand European Cultural Feast 10/11/13

Ca’d’oro Gallery Lands In Miami’s Design District With A Grand European Cultural Feast
sansoni_1Grand Opening Reception
Friday, October 11, 2013 From 7pm-9pm
Galleria Ca’d’oro | Miami
Design District 4141
Suite 105F – Ground Floor
NE 2nd Avenue
Miami, FL 33137
www.ca-doro.com
Facebook/galleriacadoromiami

In Conjunction to Giuseppe Verdi’s Bicentennial the gallery will open with a group exhibition, which has traveled from Rome to Miami accompanied by the Cameristi della Scala of Milan.

Ca’d’Oro, the gallery that made their grand appearance in 2010 with the iconic larger than life pink snails during Art Basel Miami Beach has recently relocated from Coral Gables to the epicenter of luxury, the 4141 Building in the Design District.  In conjunction to Giuseppe Verdi’s Bicentennial and as a celebration, Ca’d’Oro Gallery will open it’s golden doors on Friday, October 11th, 2013, with a group exhibition Homage to Verdi and offer to Miami a unique one-in-a-lifetime experience with a vibrant live classical music concert by the prestigious Camersití della Scala of Milan.

"We are very excited to move to the 4141 Building and form part of the renaissance of the Design District. This is Miami’s future as the arts, fashion, and design destination" says Gloria Porcella, co-owner and curator of Ca’d’Oro Gallery.  “We will continue to supports the arts in Coral Gables, a place we are grateful to have called our home for three years.”

Homage to Verdi is a moving and engaging memorialization to one of the most important composers in Italian history, Guiseppe Verdi (October 10, 1813–1901).  Curated by Gloria Porcella and Lamberto Petrecca, the exhibition highlights the works of 32 contemporary artists- spanning from Romero Britto, the pop artist Leonardo Hidalgo, award winning composer-artist Alfredo Rapetti Mogol, Monica Casali, eco-friendly artist Erika Calesini, Daniela Pasti Augias, Sasha Torrisi, Gloria Sesana, among other members of the artistic Ca’d’Oro extended family.

The year 2013 is an auspicious year for Italy, for it is also marks “The Year Of Italian Culture in the United States” and in this stellar alignment the Italian Consulate-General in Miami and with the support of Classical South Florida, the grand opening will be accompanied by a live musical performance by the Camersiti della Scala of Milan, who will be seducing the guests with an exclusive program, absolutely unique in the international music world. It contains “Fantasie” from Verdi’s operas, composed in the 19th century by Italian important composers, sometimes Verdi’s friends and coworkers.  These pieces, gifts, and celebrations to the greatness of the composer were lying forgotten and without an editor in world libraries. Thanks to the Camersiti della Scala, they are now discovered and played for the first time in our modern times. Viva Verdi!

The live classical performance will take place on the night of the grand opening and the exhibition will be on display until November 20th, 2013.

“Fiber Optics” is a comprehensive group exhibition of 40 emerging artists that exemplify fresh, innovative approaches to “fiber art.” These artists have reinvented traditional craft processes such as embroidery, crochet, knitting, weaving, sewing, and quilting. Rather than follow prescribed methods, they merge traditional craft with sculpture, installation, and video art; and utilize unexpected materials that transcend their banal origins with integral symbolism. Though the approaches are unconventional, technique, precision, and aesthetic appeal are still at the core of their processes.

Funding for this event is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council and Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Dear MFYH Foundation friends,

As you’ve been showing your support at our last anniversary, I reach out to you again to confirm if you would like to support us again this year. As you will see, this year our event has been designed differently, much smaller but more exclusive and upscale paying attention to detail for a higher impact. This year only 75 guests will be able to attend but all of them committed to support our cause.

As you know, after 12 years in business, my passion for music brought me to Miami 4 years ago and ultimately I discovered that I had a bigger mission than my own dream so October 5th,2010 I founded Music For Your Heart Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization to provide instruments and music education to the kids around the world.

End your summer right with Floatopia! Come join us Sat Sept. 14!

For newbies, Floatopia is an epic party on innertubes that takes over South Pointe Park a couple times a year. And if you missed the last two of these buoyant bashes, now’s your chance to join the fun.

The original version of this floating soiree started in California back in 2004, and since 2012, Miami’s had its very own! Back in April, a bunch of Miamians people showed up to float up. Saturday Sept. 14th, we are doing it again!

No bouncers, no guest lists, no cover charge, no promoters, just good ol’ fashioned floating fun! Bring your float, raft, inner-tube, rubber tire or anything that floats and join us at South Pointe Park for an awesome day!

Notes:
Please PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF, let’s be kind to this beautiful beach!

Your “beverages” must be in discreet containers such as plastic bottles. Remember, NO glass bottles are allowed on the beach.

Get crazy…within legal limits. No drama, please. We are all one big, friendly, floating party family! :)

Peace, Love & Float on!

Miami, FL
www.iiipoints.com

Set to run over three days (10/3 – 10/5), III Points is going to bring to the area the most innovative and exceptional talents from the worlds of music, art, and technology. The event will take place in the burgeoning arts scene of the hip Wynwood neighborhood. The Wynwood-centric three-day summit will serve as a hub to a variety of III Point lectures, film screenings, art, interactive games, and seminars. Local art galleries will be participating with extended viewing hours. The artists involved will provide a sensory emersion between music, art, and technology.

III Points kicks off on Thursday night, when the city will be abuzz with kickoff performances including Miami Horror (live), Body High showcases, and other boutique launch events.

Friday ignites with happy hours and gallery shows hosting unique III Point experiences. Young Turks’ BBQ is the lead-in party with their fellow label mates. Following the BBQ will be an underground party called Point Bass with DJ Shadow, XXYYXX, Fortune Howl, and Spies on Bikes.

III Points recommences on Saturday with seminars by James Murphy, panel discussions, activities, games, gallery shows, and demonstrations scattered throughout the streets of Wynwood. III Points has partnered with The LAB Miami, whose mission is to be a platform for entrepreneurs, a campus for social innovation, tech and the arts.

Schedule events include Artist Musical Chairs, Beer Bingo, Freeze Dance, Disco Nap, Samsung Blogger Lounge, Bro-Gaming Den, Film Screenings with the David Lynch Foundation, and intimate concerts will be laced throughout the Saturday schedule.

DFA Records will host a BBQ as a lead-in to warehouse and club parties merging music, art, and technology throughout the city. Point Blank will close out III Points with a talent roster stacked with timeless innovators headlined by James Murphy, Jamie xx, Jacques Greene, Koreless and live art by TYPOE.

The artists participating in III Points are predominantly local artists who have been working in South Florida before Wynwood and Art Basel influenced the local art culture. These artists have outlasted trends and gentrification, and continue to create quality materials and concepts that remain rich and intelligent. The majority of the art at III Points will be conceptualized, and installed specifically for this event. III points will activate satellite locations that will host the artists’ work. Some locations include Gramps, Cafeina, The Butcher Shop, Wynwood Cigar Factory, and many more.

On Friday and Saturday night, there will be a large installation around the main stage stage at Wynwood Cigar Factory integrating art and technology. There will be 3D projection mapping, a new technology which animates stationary objects with 3D video. Spearheading the 3D projection mapping is Jason Peterman with AV-8 Projects and Tecne Collective. Another performance, titled “The Drive-In” will be an interactive site specific performance involving movement, audio, and cars. Artists participating are Patricia Margarita Hernandez, Samantha Kruze, Ana Mendez, and Richard Vergez.

Throughout the weekend, guests will be able to download a specialized app or pick up a pamphlet with a map, artist downloads, videos, and media-related activities.

Sushisamba Owns the Hottest New Breakfast in Town

When you hear the word SUSHISAMBA, you think of, well, sushi, and perhaps that happy little dance local Brazilian chicas do.  But you probably would never envision a savory morning omelette, or a bowl of granola mix with housemade yogurt. That is…until now. SUSHISAMBA has brought it home, and is now offering a variety of sweet and salty favorites for the morning hour. Their breakfast selection is so vast that you will find everything from fruit “batidas” to mouth-watering steak and eggs servings with delicious homemade breads and toasts.

During my visit, I indulged in a little tasting I simply like to call heaven.

The morning began with a sweet watermelon-papaya batida. What I love about these batidas is that you can make your own by choosing the type of water you wish to mix your fruit with, such as coconut or celery water, and adding an enhancer at the end, such as ginger! I enjoyed my watermelon-papaya invention and began the tasting journey to the most delicious breakfast in town. I started with their power breakfast which consists of egg whites, red quinoa hash, Japanese mushrooms and pulled turkey. I know you’re thinking it sounds delicious, and it really was. But don’t get hungry just yet. Immediately after, I was presented with a perfect-sized serving of Sushi Samba’s chorizo dumplings in grilled onions, with avocado and aromatic cilantro puree; another well thought-out combination. The cilantro puree provides a unique aftertaste that compliments the flavors of the grilled onions and avocado quite nicely. Right when I thought my heaven tasting was coming to an end, a surprising serving of chicha morada pancakes with torched bacon and canela butter landed almost in slow motion at my table. I couldn’t keep my eyes off of the colorful texture, and the way it looked so enticing.  I was surprised to see chicha morada pancakes on their menu, as chicha morada is a soft drink made of purple corn found in the Andes region of South America. An exotic and pleasant treat, I must say. The journey continued with a classic American breakfast: any style eggs, double-cut bacon, sausages, potato hash, seasonal fruit and toasts; all quite tasty. Moving along (nope, I’m still not finished with my heavenly breakfast), another one of my favorites was the sweet quinoa oatmeal…I won’t tell you about it, you just HAVE to try it. And, lastly, saving my personal best for last, their un-be-lievable Doce de Leite French Toasts served with seasonal fruits and sesame whipped cream. Now do you understand why I died and went to heaven? A new, unique, exemplary breakfast experience unbeknown to you, no more. You simply must try.

SUSHISAMBA is located at 180 Aragon Avenue in Coral Gables, and serves breakfast daily from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Brunch menu is under construction until further notice.

Locust Projects
3852 North Miami Avenue
Miami Fl 33127

Locust Talks: Fairfax Dorn
Co-Founder and Executive Director of Ballroom Marfa, Marfa, TX
Doors open at 6:45pm. Lecture begins promptly at 7pm.

2013 marks Locust Projects’ 15th anniversary as an experimental exhibition space with a mission to serve artists and the community. To mark this milestone we have inaugurated Locust Talks, a new lecture series that brings visiting curators and directors from innovative institutions across the country and internationally. Each art professional will give a public lecture at our gallery space in Miami’s Design District, followed by individual studio visits with local artists. Curators and directors from diverse institutions across the country will talk about topics impacting artists and their communities, fostering a rigorous critical dialogue and deepening Miami’s connection to the contemporary art world.

The program launched in January of 2013 with Anne Pasternak, President and Artistic Director, Creative Time, New York. The second lecture in April featured Lauri Firstenberg, Director and Chief Curator of LAXART, Los Angeles. Locust Talks will continue through 2015 with major support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Fairfax Dorn is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Ballroom Marfa, a non-profit cultural art space dedicated to exploring varied perspectives and issues through the visual arts, film music and performance. Since 2003, Fairfax has been responsible for the artistic and programmatic vision of Ballroom Marfa and developing the future Drive-In. She is also the Co-Founder of the Marfa Dialogues, an inclusive public forum which utilizes art to address the pressing issues of our time. In addition to her directorship of Ballroom Marfa, Fairfax served as Guest Curator and Interim Program Director for the Linda Pace Foundation. Fairfax is currently a board member for Judd Foundation, New York, NY and Marfa, TX; Triple Canopy, Brooklyn, NY; Bunker259, Brooklyn, NY and the Centre Pompidou Foundation, Los Angeles, CA. Prior to Ballroom Marfa, she worked at the Whitney Museum of American Art and Exit Art in New York.  Fairfax along with Virginia Lebermann received ArtTable’s 25th Future Women Leadership Award in April of 2005. She received both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Art of Studio Art at the University of Texas at Austin.

Founded in 2003 by Virginia Lebermann and Fairfax Dorn, Ballroom Marfa is a center for the public exploration of contemporary art and culture. The gallery is housed in a converted dancehall that dates to 1927. Ballroom Marfa is a dynamic, contemporary cultural arts space that provides a lively intellectual environment where varied perspectives and issues are explored through visual arts, film, music, and performance. As an advocate for the freedom of artistic expression, Ballroom Marfa’s mission is to serve international, national, regional, and local arts communities and support the work of both emerging and recognized artists working in all media. Ballroom Marfa is particularly interested in helping artists and curators achieve projects that have significant cultural impact but would be impossible to realize in a traditional gallery or museum setting.
