The Betsy South Beach Presents Music Calendar March 2012

The Betsy South Beach continues to welcome South Florida music lovers with free and open to the public performances throughout the month of March. With regularly scheduled performances on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 8 pm. featuring great jazz and blues, as well as special performances by classical and other artists, The Betsy has become known throughout the South Florida arts community as a destination for great music in a relaxed convivial environment.

On Wednesday evenings (March 7, 14, 21, and 28) guests enjoy old school blues from Big Poppa E. On Thursday, March 1, 15, 22 and 29, Adrenaline, a jam band composed of drummer Reuben Hoch, Hammond B3 guru Ken Burkhart and guitarist Tom Lipincott, takes listeners on a musical journey while never ignoring its rhythmic roots. On Thursday, March 8 Brazilian jazz vocalist Mariana Martin, will be accompanied by Max Farber on piano. All performances are from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Performances take place in the hotel’s bustling Lobby Bar, which offers the perfect gathering spot for experiencing these stellar entertainers. Attendees can enjoy delicious signature cocktails and a bar menu provided by BLT Steak, the Betsy’s acclaimed in-house dining destination.

Harmonica master, Toots Thielemans, called Will“The Most Original and Individual of the New Generation of Harmonica Players”

As a studio musician has recorded and/ or performed with stars as varied as Sting, Barbra Streisand, Donald Fagan, Carly Simon, Chaka Khan, Ruth Brown and Peggy Lee.

In 2004, Will and Madeleine Peyroux recorded “Got You On My Mind”, an album of standards and originals which Jazz Times called “a match made in Musical Heaven”.

Famed New York vocalist Allan Harris returns to his home town of Miami for one show only.

Allan Harris is a world-class singer, guitarist and songwriter. Perhaps best known for his interpretations of jazz standards, Allan’s smooth vocals and guitar-styling easily crosses genres, from jazz to rock to blues.

Three-time winner of the New York Nightlife Award for “Outstanding Jazz Vocalist”, Tony Bennett calls Mr. Harris “my favorite singer” and The New York Times’ Stephen Holden raves about “the protean talent that is Allan Harris.” Allan has cultivated a global following, playing for packed audiences and received outstanding reviews throughout the United States, Europe, Russia and the Far East. He is regularly featured at the world’s great music festivals, e.g. Jazz Aspen, Wien Jazz Festival in Austria and the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy.

Allan’s Harris’s artistry transcends his diverse vocal performances. Harris has composed “Cross That River”, a full-scale musical celebrating the Old West as told through the words and music of a black cowboy, and has received a prestigious Chamber Music America Grant for that work. The theatrical production of “Cross That River” played to rave reviews during the 2009 New York Musical Theater Festival and is currently in pre-production for a long-term run in early 2011. Several original songs from “Cross That River” are also frequently featured in The Allan Harris Band’s concert performances.

In addition to music, Allan is passionate about giving back. He is a long-time supporter of the Children’s Miracle Network (helping to raise funds for children’s hospitals), and has performed many times alongside Vince Gill and Amy Grant at the Challenge Aspen Gala, an annual charity concert/golf tournament to benefit military service people who have sustained disabilities.

Michael Allman, Greg Allman’s son, backed by the Marshal Brothers will perform.

Michael Allman is the eldest son of Southern Rock Legend Gregg Allman. That doesn’t mean that his musical path has been paved with gold. Born in Daytona Beach, Florida, he led the “Michael Allman Band” throughout most of the 1990’s before he traded it in for the serenity of domestic life. It was during this period that he faced his greatest obstacle, testicular cancer in 2002. After a full recovery, Michael decided to give music another attempt and in mid 2007 began singing and writing again. In 2008 he started recording his debut CD. During that year he kept busy while working on his CD, by making over 100 guest appearances with many different bands and musicians from coast to coast. In January 2009 he formed the “Allman-Tyler Band” w/ guitarist Tony Tyler.

After the Spring 2009 ATB tour, he went back to work on his debut CD. In the Fall of 2009, he completed and released “Michael Allman’s Hard Labor Creek” on his own All-Skinn Music Group label. With an almost ghostly likeness to his father, his world-weary voice and sheer power of the music seeps into your soul and you realize this is the real thing. Allman is planning a Spring 2010 U.S. Tour to support the CD with songs like “Circus Full of Clowns”, “If Dreams Were Money” and the unique “ Mule Named Whiskey” that will make everyone, young and old want to dance.

This dynamic and prolific artist has recorded five cd’s as a bandleader. His critically acclaimed debut cd “Forma Nueva”, featuring John Patitucci, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, Bill Stewart and Seamus Blake, received nationwide airplay and garnered strong reviews in the jazz and music press: Billboard, Jazztimes, Jazziz, All Music Guide and Latin Beat among others. “Historia”, a jazz quartet recording for Fresh Sounds New Talent followed in 2005. Then in 2006 “Melancolia”, which employed a string quartet incorporating world rhythms and classical concepts in the jazz idiom that opened up new vistas of compositional colors and textures across the full range of Valera’s sources. In 2007, “Vientos” represented a new working quartet, featuring bassist James Genus, drummer Ernesto Simpson and saxophonist Joel Frahm. His fifth major recording and most recent work, “Currents”, was released on MaxJazz on October of last year featuring Ernesto Simpson and James Genus.

Manuel’s most recent recognition for “Vientos” is the Jazziz Critics’ Choice for “The Best of 2007” and the “2007 Jazz Twirlies,” a celebration award given to those most worthy in modern jazz. He is a recipient of the 2006 Chamber Music America’s New Works Commission, the 2005 ASCAP Young Composers Award and a final nominee of the 2005 Jazz Journalist Association’s awards in the Up & Coming Musician of the Year category. Manuel also tours with Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval and drummer Dafnis Prieto.

A five-time Grammy-winning musician, actor, artist, activist and humanitarian, Ziggy Marley has established his presence on the public stage for over a quarter-century. A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Ziggy Marley and his siblings first sat in on recording sessions with his father’s band, the legendary Bob Marley and the Wailers, when he was ten years old. Later, Ziggy joined with his sisters Sharon and Cedella and brother Stephen to become Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers, allowing him to craft his own soulful sound which blends blues, R&B, hip-hop and roots reggae. His debut solo album, Dragonfly was followed by Love Is My Religion, a Grammy winner that further explored personal, social and political themes amid a fragrant mix of roots reggae, traditional rock ‘n roll, African percussion and other varied musical elements. Recently, Ziggy won his fifth Grammy Award, in the category “Best Musical Album for Children,” for Family Time, a collection of reggae-inflected, family-oriented songs. His most recent album, Wild and Free, is a powerful one, as it propels him to challenge social injustice along with the political weapons of ignorance and fear. It may be Ziggy’s most political and personal to date.

Pablo Gil Rodulfo is a Venezuelan saxophonist, composer, producer and arranger.

He has performed or recorded with artists and groups such as Mike Stern, Edward Simon, Dave Samuels and the Caribbean jazz Project, Adam Rogers, Mike Holober, Dave Kikoski, Nicolas Folmer and the Paris Jazz Big Band, John Benitez, Steve Turre, Ron Carter, Patato Valdez, Juan Pablo Torres, Mario Rivera, Luis Perdomo, Gerry Weil, Alfredo Naranjo, Aquiles Báez, Orlando Poleo and Soledad Bravo among others.

His performances have taken place in countries such as France, United States, England, Panama, Côte d’Ivoire, Mexico, Peru, Oman, Russia, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Italy, Bonaire, Colombia, Portugal, Turkey and Senegal. He has issued five CDs as a leader: Major Delights (2002), Simbolos (2004), Empatia (2006), Suka Jazz en directo (2007), and Baladas (2008).

Pablo started his musical career in Merida, Venezuela. In the late 80’s he moved to Caracas and in 1991 he was granted a scholarship to continue his musical studies in Paris (France), receiving various awards such as the gold medal in saxophone at the Conservatoire National De Paris (1995) and the first prize for saxophone in Paris (1995). He moved to United States where continued his studies with musicians such as Ron Carter, Bruce Barth, Steve Slagle and Rich Perry, and obtained the degree of Master of arts in Jazz Performance from City College of the City University of New York. Currently a Fellow in the Frost School of music in the University of Miami.

Grammy winner, Felipe Lamoglia presents Iresounds … A phenomenal new band , infusing the essence of Afro Cuban Jazz, Guaguanco and Rumba

Felipe Lamoglia is a Grammy-winning artist, saxophonist, composer and arranger.
Born and educated in Cuba, he studied at the Superior Institute of Art (ISA). By the age of 18 he was a member of Cuba’s acclaimed band, NG La Banda. In 1992 hemoved to Brazil where he lived for seven years, absorbing the country’s musical and spiritual wealth and playing with great artists. In 2001 he began playing with Arturo Sandoval, performing all over the world and recording diverse albums andDVDs, including all the arrangements and the co-production of “Rumba Palace” a Grammy Winner album. He joined Gonzalo Rubalcaba in 2004, recording his album, Paseo”, also nominated to Latin Grammys in 2006 and touring Europe with “The New Cuban Quartet”.

Felipe has shared the stage with musical giants such as Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Conrad Herwick, Ignacio Berroa, Paquito D’Rivera, and many others. In addition to Arts Centers and Festivals performed all over the world and in USA, Mr. Lamoglia is bringing all this experience to IRESOUNDS which comes from an extended mixture of folklores including Afro-Cuban roots, Brazilian rhythms and Contemporary Jazz, resulting in a mix of Jazz, Beats and Clave.

All Afro-Cuban music and the majority of Latin jazz is rooted in a basic rhythm called clave, which developed out of the rhythms brought to the Caribbean by Africans during the slave trade.

With Iresounds you are welcome to delight the essence of Afro-Cuban Jazz music and the basic clave rhythms like Guaguanco, Rumba and Bolero but with a complete different modern view, still up to dance and full of improvisation and versatile creativity.

JAMIE OUSLEY has been one of the most in-demand bassists in south Florida since he moved to Miami in the fall of 1998 to attend graduate school in the prestigious Jazz program of the University of Miami. He has since completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Jazz Bass Performance and continues to perform and teach both locally and internationally. He is currently the Professor of Jazz Bass at Florida International University.

Felipe Lamoglia is a Grammy-winning artist, saxophonist, composer and arranger. Born and educated in Cuba, he studied at the Superior Institute of Art (ISA). By the age of 18 he was a member of Cuba’s acclaimed band, NG La Banda. In 1992 he moved to Brazil where he lived for seven years, absorbing the country’s musical and spiritual wealth and playing with great artists. In 2001 he began playing with Arturo Sandoval, performing all over the world and recording diverse albums and DVDs, including all the arrangements and the co-production of “Rumba Palace” a Grammy Winner album. He joined Gonzalo Rubalcaba in 2004, recording his album, Paseo”, also nominated to Latin Grammys in 2006 and touring Europe with “The New Cuban Quartet”.

Felipe has shared the stage with musical giants such as Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Conrad Herwick, Ignacio Berroa, Paquito D’Rivera, and many others.

In addition to Arts Centers and Festivals performed all over the world and in USA, Mr Lamoglia is bringing all this experience to IRESOUNDS which comes from an extended mixture of folklores including Afro-Cuban roots, Brazilian rhythms and Contemporary Jazz, resulting in a mix of Jazz, Beats and Clave.

All Afro-Cuban music and the majority of Latin jazz is rooted in a basic rhythm called clave, which developed out of the rhythms brought to the Caribbean by Africans during the slave trade.

With Iresounds you are welcome to delight the essence of Afro-Cuban Jazz music and the basic clave rhythms like Guaguanco, Rumba and Bolero but with a complete different modern view, still up to dance and full of improvisation and versatile creativity.
