Let the games begin! CityPlace Doral – South Florida’s premier wellness, entertainment, dining and restaurant destination – is teaming up with RECREA to host Go for the Gold Kid Olympics in celebration of the 2024 Summer Olympics. Taking place in Paris, France, the 2024 Summer Olympics take place July 26 through Aug. 11. The free, family-friendly event will take place in CityPlace Doral’s Fountain Plaza on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Guests of all ages will have the opportunity to go for the gold and participate in interactive activities including themed sports games, a live DJ, a Martial Arts performance, giveaways and more.

Guests can also enjoy CityPlace Doral’s seasonal Instagrammable art installation made entirely of sunflower-decorated umbrellas. The umbrellas are arranged where the sunflowers are visible from both the top and the bottom, adding a touch of uniqueness to the atmosphere. The umbrellas will be on display through Aug. 31.

Celebrate back to school and Hip Hop Recognition Month with exciting activities centered around elements of hip hop. Try your hand at Graffiti, explore physical movement through “breaking,” and learn more about the music and histories that shaped hip hop culture, all while making art on PAMM’s waterfront terrace.

Explore our latest exhibition, Xican-a.o.x. Body, and discover how the artwork themes and hip hop are connected through movements of cultural self-determination. As architects of the hip hop cultural production, Black, Latine, and Caribbean American youth influenced many aspects of contemporary life, including music, fashion, art, film, politics, and more.

Boca Raton, FL – 2024 marks a pivotal year in American society and at the Boca Museum of Art as they celebrate their 75th anniversary. To ignite American spirit, the Museum proudly welcomes artist Mateo Blanco. Known for his unique renditions of the American flag using uncommon textiles and materials, Blanco will present another artistic twist on “Old Glory” at the Boca Raton Museum of Art in celebration of Labor Day. On Saturday, August 31, 2024, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm, Blanco will host an in-gallery workshop, Creation Station, where visitors are invited to create their own personalized American flag art.
Blanco’s new artwork Credit Flag, will be on view during Creation Station, which is crafted with 42 credit cards he has used over a span of 25 years. Visitors can meet and learn about his creative process before making their own flag-inspired artwork to take home. Creation Station is a drop-in art program for all ages to explore the visual arts, and is offered free with museum admission.
“Credit Flag has political, economic, social, and cultural meaning, but like everything in life, it depends on how you see things,” said Blanco. “On August 31, join me to create your own flag with your own point of view of our great nation.”
The Boca Raton Museum of Art has two other works by Mateo Blanco in its collection. July 4, 2020 is a flag created with pieces of fabric from Blanco’s clothing that he wore at his college graduation. Native Flag is a textile flag that represents the artist’s Colombian roots with native fabrics and dyes.
“Mateo’s artistic talents are in creating works that resonate with personal meaning,” said Irvin Lippman, Executive Director of the Boca Raton Museum of Art. “At first glance, Native Flag is an American flag with its stars and stripes. Upon closer inspection, it is a collage of handwoven fabrics in subtle pale colors made out of native plants from Colombia – a melding of cultures.”
The Boca Raton Museum of Art also has a personal meaning for Blanco. “I was a young man who visited the museum while I was studying at Florida Atlantic University,” he said. “I dreamed of exhibiting my art there. You can also make your dreams come true.”

About Mateo Blanco
Blanco was born in Miami in 1981 and began his formal training in fine art in Medellin, Colombia, where he studied under Débora Arango Pérez, the artist immortalized on the country’s 2,000-peso bill. Blanco’s studies include goldsmithing and jewelry. He holds a B.A. from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL. Blanco is also a talented opera performer, who sang for President George H.W. FLITE Center’s “Sip, Savor and Screening” benefit presented by Seminole Casino Coconut Creek will take place on Tuesday, August 20, from 6 – 9 p.m., at Movies of Delray (7421 W Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach). This special evening, part of Boca Chamber Festival Days (BCFD), will include a complimentary libation, gourmet light bites, a raffle and a ticket to view the 2024 drama, Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot, an uplifting true story about how a small community banded together to transform the lives of its most vulnerable youth. All proceeds will go toward FLITE Center programs and services, which provide young adults with resources and support to help them transition to independent living. FLITE Center is a one-stop resource center offering all supportive services to youth aging out of foster care, chronically homeless youth, human trafficking survivors, and LGBTQ+ youth.

Featured on Oprah, the powerful Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot follows a rural Texas church community’s life-changing decision for 22 families to adopt 77 vulnerable children from the foster care system, helping among other things to shield them from the horrors of human trafficking. Led by Reverend Martin and his wife Donna, this act of boundless compassion ignited a movement, proving with passion and commitment, that the battle for America’s most vulnerable can be won.

With comprehensive, seamless support, FLITE Center guides nearly 2,000 youth annually through life’s maze. FLITE connects them to employment, education, health services, counseling, and safe, affordable housing. Established in Broward County, FLITE Center has been serving the West Palm Beach community since 2021. In 2022, it expanded its services by adding a 1,500-square-foot drop-in center located in the historic northwest sector of downtown – in an area youth can easily reach. More recently, new property space began providing a safe, secure and reliable immediate housing emergency landing space lovingly called Falcon Ridge for human trafficking survivor youth and their families.

FLITE Center’s West Palm Beach’s Anti-Human Trafficking programming is supported through a Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant through the Office of the Attorney General of Florida and through a U.S. Department of Justice Office of Victims of Crime Housing Assistance Grant, helping at-risk and sex-trafficked children and young adults between the ages of 10 – 24 with trauma informed care, guidance and support.

Celebrating 47 years, Boca Chamber Festival Days is the chamber’s outreach to the non-profit community. Non-profit chamber members join forces with for-profit chamber members to hold events during the month of August with a primary objective of enhancing awareness and gathering funds for philanthropic endeavors. The Boca Chamber is proud to offer a diverse range of activities that showcase the vibrant essence of Boca Raton, spanning from intimate gatherings to larger-scale celebrations.

Feeding South Florida – the leading hunger-relief organization in South Florida – will host its inaugural black-tie gala, with the theme of Emerald Peacock, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024. The event, presented by Ryder System Inc., will kick off with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m. followed by a three-course dinner in the Grand Ballroom. South Florida’s top community leaders, philanthropists and influencers will be among the 500 guests who will enjoy dinner, dancing, live entertainment, an engaging program and more to raise crucial funds to fight food insecurity in South Florida.

Currently, in South Florida, there are more than 1.2 million food insecure individuals. One in nine individuals in South Florida remain uncertain about where they will get their next meal due to inflation, the strained supply chain, rising fuel prices and increased housing costs among other factors. Proceeds raised during the event will allow Feeding South Florida to fulfill its mission to end hunger in South Florida by providing immediate access to nutritious food, leading hunger and poverty advocacy efforts and transforming lives through innovative programming and education.

The gala will be co-chaired by Steve Stowe, vice president and executive director of the Miami HEAT Charitable Fund and Stephanie Wicky, vice president of marketing at Ryder Systems, Inc.

Celebrated entertainment reporter Lisa Petrillo of CBS News Miami will emcee the event. Supporters will also have the opportunity to sponsor a Feeding South Florida family through donations and participate in a silent auction featuring high-end items and exceptional luxury experiences.

Gala sponsorships and underwriting opportunities are now available. Sponsorships range from $2,500 to $100,000. Individual tickets are available for $650.

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts celebrates 10 years of classes at the Rose Miniaci Arts Education Center at the Broward Center with a free open house. Guests can tour the education center facilities, observe or participate in sample classes, grab the mic in Broadway Karaoke, play Broadway trivia, meet the teaching artists, win prizes, register to win a free fall class, enjoy family-friendly activities, light refreshments and more. Classes for the public are now on sale.

The Broward Center’s singing, dance, improv and acting classes are for kids, teens and adults and also include classes for those with physical and intellectual disabilities. Classes are designed to encourage artistic expression and teach theater skills in a supportive and inclusive environment. In addition, class participants can audition to be in a show or represent the Broward Center at community performances.

The open house schedule and complete class listing are available at BrowardCenter.org/open-house. Anyone who registers during the open house will receive a 10% discount and a free T-shirt. Classes begin September 4 and most continue for 10 weeks. Classes are limited in size and tailored to the appropriate age and skill levels from beginner to the more advanced student. Gather inspiration from a variety of artists like Louise Bourgeois, Do Ho Suh, Erin Fostel, Frank Poor, Tracey Snelling and others that explore the theme of “home” in their work. Create your own mixed media work that represents what “home” means to you.

Creativity Exploration adult workshops promote the benefits of material exploration and the mind-to-body experience. Studies have shown that 45 minutes of creative activity a day reduces stress and offers mental clarity and relaxation. In addition to producing a sense of well-being, sessions expand participants’ perceptions of forms, while increasing brain connectivity through visual and cognitive stimulation. The workshop is led by educator Lark Keeler, a specialist in mindfulness education.

On Sunday, July 28, RedFarm is hosting a special Wok Star Supper Club dinner in collaboration with Miami’s food personality and event curator, Eleanor Hoh. The gathering will feature a four-course dinner priced at $75 per person, executed by RedFarm’s dim-sum master, Chef Joe Ng.

Hoh and RedFarm’s co-founder & Executive Chef Joe Ng have curated a Special Menu for this gathering. Expect modern and inventive Chinese cuisine with whimsical touches and a seasonally driven menu, including dishes unique to Miami. The Special Menu will offer signature dishes with substantial vegetarian options.

The evening will commence at 6pm with a meet and greet while enjoying Asian-inspired cocktails, followed by a sit-down four-course dinner in a dining area allocated exclusively for the event. This summer, Escape Rooftop Bar, the gorgeous al fresco space atop the Kimpton Shorebreak Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, has become a local favorite for its amazing sunset views, creative cocktails and tempting tapas. Grab your best partners-in-crime and hatch a plot to catch Die, Mommie, Die! by Charles Busch, Island City Stage’s riotous 12th Season closer running August 22 – September 22. Off-Broadway star Kris Andersson (aka Dixie Longate) leads a multitalented cast of performers in this killer comic melodrama that evokes the 1960s “Grande Dame Guignol” films that featured aging stars such as Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Lana Turner.

Ex-pop singer Angela Arden is trapped in a hateful marriage with Sol. But desperate to find happiness with her young lover Tony, Angela murders her husband with a poisoned suppository. Suspicious of their mother, her children slip her some LSD, provoking a wild acid trip in which many secrets are revealed.

Die, Mommie, Die! was first produced in 1999 by Kenneth Elliott and Don Fairbanks at the Coast Playhouse in Los Angeles. In October 2007, the play opened Off-Broadway at New World Stages in New York City. Directed by Carl Andress, the production starred author Charles Busch and featured Bob Ari, Van Hansis, Chris Hoch, Ashley Morris and Kristine Nielson. It was also made into a 2003 film starring Busch.

Charles Busch has forged a unique place in the world of entertainment as playwright, actor, director, novelist, cabaret performer and drag icon. The award-winner is the author and star of over 25 plays including The Divine Sister, The Lady in Question, Red Scare on Sunset, The Tribute Artist, The Confession of Lily Dare and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom; one of the longest running plays in the history of Off-Broadway. His play The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife ran for 777 performances on Broadway, won the Outer Circle Critics’ John L. Gassner Award for playwrighting, received a Tony nomination for Best Play and is the longest running Broadway comedy of the past 25 years. He wrote and starred in the film versions of his plays, Psycho Beach Party and Die Mommie Die, the latter of which won him the Best Performance Award at the Sundance Film Festival. For two seasons, he appeared as Nat Ginzburg on the HBO series OZ and is the author of the auto-biographical novel Whores of Lost Atlantis. He has directed two films and has appeared as a guest programmer and in numerous documentaries for Turner Classic Movies. He has lectured and conducted master classes at many colleges and universities including NYU, Harvard, UCLA and Amherst College. In 2003, Mr. Busch received a special Drama Desk Award for career achievement as both performer and playwright and was given a star on the Playwrights Walk outside the Lucille Lortel Theatre. He is also the subject of the acclaimed documentary film The Lady in Question is Charles Busch. He is a two-time MAC award winner and has performed his cabaret across the globe.

Die, Mommie Die! is directed by Andy Rogow and co-stars Clay Cartland, Troy J. Stanley, Elizabeth Dimon, Kevin Veloz and Suzanna Ninomiya alongside Andersson.

The YMCA of South Florida, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, School Board of Broward County, HandsOn South Florida, Soles4Souls, City of Ft. Lauderdale Police Department, and volunteers from other companies and nonprofit organizations are committed to supporting K-12 education in South Florida and will provide free backpacks, school supplies, underwear and shoes to students in K through 12 students in Broward County.

Each child must be present and will receive one backpack filled with school supplies and other goodies. Families also can take advantage of free immunizations and apply for Florida Kidcare and free and reduced school meals.

Immunizations are for families without medical insurance. To make an appointment, call 954-771-5245. A copy of the child’s immunization record, COVID-19 vaccination card, parent’s photo ID (valid driver’s license or passport), and proof of address (lease, utility bill, etc.) is required.

The Friends of Jack & Jill Center – a support group of volunteers committed to developing community awareness, fundraising and program assistance for Jack & Jill Center’s children and their families – is honored to host the 23rd Annual Power Lunch at First Baptist Downtown Event Center in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 11:30 a.m. Neki Mohan, the vice president of Visit Lauderdale, will serve as the master of ceremonies.

The event pays tribute to special and outstanding honorees in the South Florida community who have helped The Friends of Jack & Jill Center raise over $6.5 million for high-need children and families since its inception in 1999. Over 300 business professionals in Broward County are anticipated to attend the 23rd Annual Power Lunch.

In recognition of their dedication to Jack & Jill Center, the luncheon will honor Greg Young, known as Greg the Barber, as the volunteer honoree, Holman Enterprises as the philanthropic organization honoree and Stephen Distributing as the corporate honoree. These awards are bestowed to those who have gone above and beyond through their contributions and service to the Jack & Jill Center.

The proceeds from the event will benefit Jack & Jill Center’s mission to strengthen children and families through innovative education, supportive programming and community engagement. Jack & Jill Center supports children of high-need working families through quality early childhood education, elementary education, family strengthening program and HEALTH Program to ensure every child and family has the tools they need to be successful. Jack & Jill Center has served 30,000 children and families in South Florida since 1942.

In 2022, Darius V. Daughtry, one of South Florida’s best-known poets, authors, directors and educators, presented a stage reading of Seeking, where he explored a journey of self-discovery in the midst of an everchanging world. Now he brings his well-received work to the stage in this new full production with performances on Friday, July 26 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, July 27 at 2 and 7 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets start at $30 with student prices at $20.

Written and directed by Daughtry, Seeking is an unforgettable experience that brings music and magic to the stage as the audience follows the story of a young musician’s quest for independence. This leads to his discovery of how instrumental his family’s past is to him in finding his future. Evening performances are followed by Art Prevails Project’s signature artist talk and a special reception with complimentary drinks and light bites.

Feeding South Florida® – the leading hunger-relief organization in South Florida – will host its Annual Outrun Hunger 5K in Palm Beach County in celebration of Hunger Action Month on Saturday, Sept. 21. Runners, families and community leaders of all ages will come together to take steps in the beautiful Okeeheelee Park to raise funds and awareness to end hunger in South Florida.

Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative created by Feeding America®, takes place throughout September and is designed to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in America and inspire others to take action toward ending it. Throughout the month, Feeding South Florida will offer a range of events and activities to encourage South Florida residents to “GO ORANGE” and engage in various hunger relief efforts.

Outrun Hunger race day check-in opens at 6:30 a.m. and the 5K will begin at 7:30 a.m. After the race, an awards ceremony and a raffle will take place. Participants can join the event as an individual or a team and conduct online fundraising prior to race day.

Dead Man Walking is an opera by acclaimed composer, Jake Heggie, based on the book and film interpretation of the same name. It’s a powerful retelling of the true story that has profoundly influenced the ongoing debate on the death penalty in America. Settle in for a spectacular live opera experience by Miami Beach Classical Music Festival.

When a New Orleans-based Catholic nun agrees to become pen pals with an inmate convicted of murder on death row, her entire worldview on life, death, forgiveness, and capital punishment is challenged forever.

Heggie will be in residence to work with MMF’s Opera Institute cast to help tell this poignant story featuring a libretto by Tony-award-winning Terrance McNally (Masterclass, Ragtime).

Burgess Modern + Contemporary is thrilled to unveil “INK: 75 Years of Prints”, a vibrant summer exhibition that promises to captivate art lovers and collectors alike with a diverse and dynamic collection of fine art prints, limited editions, and numbered series of works spanning several generations and artistic movements.

Opening on July 19, 2024, from 6 – 9 pm, this exhibition features works by Derrick Adams, Marc Chagall, The Connor Brothers, Salvador Dali, Damien Hirst, Alex Katz, Joan Miro, Jedd Novatt, Pablo Picasso, Ugo Rondinone, Carlos Rolon, David Salle, Kenny Scharf, Frank Stella, Donald Sultan, and Nicole Wittenberg.

Curatorially inspired by the recently opened and highly celebrated exhibition of Alex Katz’s “60 Years of Printmaking” in Paris, the exhibition at Burgess Modern + Contemporary explores the dialogue between historical finesse and contemporary boldness through the works by some of the most celebrated modern and contemporary artists.

Each artwork in “INK: 75 Years of Prints” offers a rare spectrum of styles and techniques and embodies a unique narrative that is both culturally poignant and artistically significant. Marc Chagall’s lithographs, imbued with dreamlike imagery and vibrant colors, invite viewers into his fantastical world, where folklore and personal memory intertwine. Similarly, the surrealist masterpieces of Salvador Dalí push the boundaries of imagination and technique. Alex Katz, whose work also serves as a source of inspiration for this exhibition, is renowned for his flat, bold portraits that capture the essence of his subjects with striking simplicity. Joan Miró’s prints, characterized by playful abstraction and a vivid palette, offer a whimsical yet profound commentary on the human mind. Contemporary artist Derrick Adams’s work reflects on African American culture and identity, often incorporating elements of collage and vibrant patterns that challenge traditional narratives and celebrate individuality. The enigmatic works of The Connor Brothers blur the lines between fiction and reality, using text and imagery to provoke thought and elicit emotional responses. Ugo Rondinone’s prints, celebrated for their meditative and poetic qualities, seamlessly blend natural motifs with minimalist abstraction, offering viewers a contemplative visual experience that transcends the ordinary.
