The Big Game is coming to South Florida in 2020, and so is a big party that cannot be missed – Party with a Purpose® by Taste of the NFL (TNFL). TNFL’s annual event traditionally takes place on the eve of the Super Bowl. For its 29th year, it will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020 in Fort Lauderdale at the Broward County Convention Center. This year’s star-studded fundraising event brings together exceptional cuisine, prominent chefs from around the country, NFL players, coaches, legends and more, all to support the fight against hunger.

“When we began in 1992, our goal was to raise money in order to provide meals to those in need,” said TNFL Founder Wayne Kostroski. “Many of the recipients are children and seniors who rely on their local food banks for assistance.”

Since its inception, TNFL – one of the few organizations sanctioned by the NFL – has gathered the country’s top chefs and the NFL’s greatest players to fundraise in support of food banks throughout the United States. To date, TNFL’s programs and events have raised and donated over $26 million for food banks and hunger-related nonprofit organizations in all 32 NFL cities, resulting in more than 220 million meals distributed nationwide. This year’s team of guest hosts includes the legendary Coach Don Shula serving as the National Honorary Chair; Chef Andrew Zimmern – National Culinary Host; Chef Adam Richman – Florida Culinary Host; and Ben Leber as the National Player Host.

Tickets for Party with a Purpose® on Saturday, February 1, 2020 are now on sale at tasteofthenfl.com/tickets. General admission is priced at $700 per person. Those interested in the seated VIP section with extra perks, tables of 10 are available at $10,000.

Museum of Art and Design at MDC
600 Biscayne Boulevard,
Miami, Florida 33132

MOAD MDC presents Black Power Naps/Siestas Negras by Navild and Sosa, a multi-sensory, interactive installation designed to provide joyful and relaxing relief from fatiguing systems of inequality. The installation will serve as a platform for several special live events, including Guided Nap Meditations led by the artists and live DJ soundscapes performed from bed.

Cost: $15 adults/ $12 seniors/ $7 students / Free for military and kids ages 6 and under

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, invites guests to explore “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale,” a new major permanent exhibit opening October 1 (members-only preview on September 30 at 6 p.m.).

The exhibit will allow visitors to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis. The first major history exhibition in three years, this visually compelling exhibit will occupy half of one of the main upstairs galleries and will remain part of the History Museum’s permanent exhibits. Highlights of the exhibit include New River development pioneer Tom Bryan’s original desk and chair from the 1920s, agricultural artifacts from the early 1900s, a historic hotel register and family photos.

The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale, descendants of William Bryan, a Revolutionary War veteran from North Carolina, can be traced back to Florida as early as 1844 with the birth of great grandson Philemon Nathaniel Bryan in Hamilton County. Philemon served in the Confederate Army and moved south to Volusia County after the Civil War. He acquired extensive citrus groves and served as the mayor of New Smyrna. After acquiring wealth and a reputation for his agricultural skills, he and his wife, Lucy, moved further south and arrived on the New River in 1895, where Bryan served as a construction contractor for the Florida East Coast Railway and officer in the first city bank. He and his seven children, including Reed A. Bryan, Tom M. Bryan, Virginia Dallas Bryan and Constance Bryan, along with several relatives, also settled in Fort Lauderdale and helped build it to prominence. They worked as farmers, innkeepers, and businesspeople becoming civic leaders and nurturing the City on its way to prosperity.

“The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” will join other insightful History Fort Lauderdale permanent exhibits including “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, Seminole Tribal art and artifacts and a multitude of narratives and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale. The nonprofit museum also hosts a variety of yearly multicultural exhibits highlighting African American and Afro-Caribbean contributions, Hispanic crafts and local artists.

Last year, History Fort Lauderdale, in conjunction with The Florida Humanities Council, launched Florida Stories’ “Walk Fort Lauderdale,” the first FREE Broward County walking tour app (available through the App Store and Google Play). The tour, featuring archival photos, renderings and cultural narratives, allows visitors to learn about the colorful history of Fort Lauderdale at their own pace at 12 significant locations including the New River and Bryan Homes on the History Fort Lauderdale Campus and the Bryan/Abreu building (201 SW 2nd St.).

Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale and AutoNation Team Up to Support Breast Cancer Research Funding During October with a Rosé Garden Party 10/19/19

Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale and AutoNation Team Up to Support Breast Cancer Research Funding During October with a Rosé Garden Party
Saturday, 10/19/2019 – 08:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale
2414 E Sunrise Blvd,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301
Website
Cost: $15 online from September 2 through October 19, $20 at the door. $10 for additional raffle tickets.

An estimated one in eight U.S. women is expected to develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. While these statistics are alarming, individuals and organizations across the nation continue to do their part to fund vital research seeking a cure. This October, Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale is teaming up with AutoNation, America’s largest automotive retailer, to raise awareness for breast cancer as part of a month-long charitable drive, marked by a new signature event, the Rosé Garden Party on Saturday, October 19, from 8 to 11 p.m. at The Galleria Fort Lauderdale location. Proceeds from the ticketed event, which will feature live entertainment, drink specials and raffles, plus sales from specific drinks all month long, will benefit the Dolphins Cancer Challenge.

Throughout the month of October, Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale will donate $2 for every signature pink cocktail and $2 for every glass of Maison Belle Claire Rosé that is sold to the Dolphins Cancer Challenge. The Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC) was founded in 2010 by the Miami Dolphins organization as the signature initiative of the Foundation’s health area. The DCC’s mission is to improve people’s lives through financial support for innovative cancer research at South Florida’s only academic-based cancer center – Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth — the University of Miami Health System. Since its inception, the DCC has raised more than $27.5 million, donating 100 percent of participant-raised funds to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. AutoNation is a proud sponsor of the event.

This month-long effort coincides with AutoNation’s partnership with The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale. Starting October 1, two gigantic pink reindeer will be prominently displayed throughout the entire month on the exterior of the mall to signify National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A pink themed vehicle will be displayed with the reindeer. This partnership underscores AutoNation’s commitment to driving out cancer. Through its DRV PNK Intiative, the company has raised more than $20 million for cancer research and treatment, placing its iconic pink plates on every vehicle it sells and services from coast to coast.

The month-long fundraiser will be marked by the Rosé Garden Party, a festive soiree featuring signature sips and culinary treats, plus raffles for designer giveaways and spa packages from sought-after brands and premier experiences.

Admission for this ticketed event includes entrance, a glass of Rosé or a signature Pink drink and a raffle ticket. Tickets are available to be purchased online for $15 from September 2 through October 19 at www.rosegardenpartyftl.eventbrite.com. Tickets are also available for purchase at the door for $20. Additional raffle tickets can be purchased for $10 each. Fifty percent of proceeds from the pre-sold online tickets and 100% of proceeds from the raffle tickets will be donated to the Dolphins Cancer Challenge.

How could the hedonistic nights of disco be reimagined in today’s new era? Peach Room invites you to find out. Poised to bring disco back to the new age, Peach Room is a brand-new and unique roaming pop-up party, set to unveil in Miami October 5th at The Anderson, concepted around the mantra: disco never died. Paying homage to the discos of the early 70’s, Peach Room blends uninhibited dancing, flowing conversation and unexpected twists with Miami’s undeniable energy.

On Saturday, October 5th, Peach Room will make its big debut at The Anderson bar, transforming the space from 10PM-5AM into an ultra-decadent disco for the night during their first ever Miami pop-up. Party guests can expect remixed disco sets, live dance performers, unexpected characters, and a night so memorable they’ll forget to check their Instagrams because the only place they’ll want to be is there. A signature Peach Room cocktail menu will also be offered, delivering delicious retro 70’s style cocktails designed to fuel a long night of dancing and revelry.

Guests are encouraged to dress in true Disco Fashion (think sequins, jumpsuits, leopard, and lots of personality)! The element of surprise is another fundamental principle that embodies Peach Room’s eminent vision. Bearing that in mind, partygoers will have to keep their eyes and ears peered for details on the next pop-up party, as the locations and dates for upcoming Peach Room takeovers will be announced at the beginning of each month. Follow @PeachRoomMiami for updates!

Pioneer of the Créolité movement, Raphaël Confiant interweaves excerpts from his writings with musings on Martinican philosopher, poet, and literary critic Édouard Glissant to unpack issues underlying Where the Oceans Meet, such as the interplay between language and identity.

Raphaël Confiant was born in Le Lorrain, Martinique. He studied English and political science at the Sciences Po Aix, and law at Paul Cézanne University in Aix-en-Provence, France. During the 1970s, Confiant became a militant proponent of use of the Creole language, and later worked with Jean Bernabé and Patrick Chamoiseau to create the Créolité movement. Together, the three authors wrote the movement’s seminal text, Eloge de la créolité (In Praise of Creoleness, 1989), in addition to other theoretical texts. The Créolité movement is often characterized as a reaction to the Négritude movement, which emphasized the African origins of the Antillean people. Créolité, on the other hand, emphasizes the diversity of Antillean ancestry and cultural heritage, which also includes Chinese, Indian, and European influences. The movement seeks to understand the diverse identities and histories of the people of the Antilles through the lens of literature and language and eschews the universal in favor of a diverse view of language and identity. Confiant is a well-known writer in both Creole and French and is currently a lecturer at the University of the French West Indies and Guiana (UAG).

The exhibition proposes works of various media that incorporate abstraction as both a formal and conceptual framework to render perceptions of place. The use of abstraction facilitates readings of the process inherent in their making. This process involves elements that reference diverse notions of place – its color, materiality, use of language, and instantaneity as landscape. The summation of these notions, a conversation between the work as a whole and its constituent parts, contributes to varying degrees of legibility and evocativeness.

The participating artists are Liene Bosquê, Jenny Brillhart, Jude Broughan, Alain Castoriano, Robert Chambers, Irina Dakhnovskaia-Lawton, Lucia Del Sanchez, Genderfail, Ivan Grilo, Xavier Luján, Marron et Masqué, Juan Matos, Nicole Maynard-Sahar, Tana Oshima, Alice Quaresma, Marielle Plaisir, Carrie Sieh, Gerbi Tsesarskaia, and Cristina Victor.

On View: October 11, 2019 – March 31, 2020

Adler Guerrier (born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti; lives and works in Miami, FL) is best known for works in photography, drawing, and printmaking that explore the poetics and politics of place. Guerrier received a BFA from New World School of the Arts/University of Florida. His recent exhibitions include Coffee, Rhum, Sugar, & Gold: A Postcolonial Paradox (Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco), curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah and Dexter Wimberly, La Construcción de lo Posible, XIII Havana Biennial (Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam, Havana), and Lines of Fracture (David Castillo Gallery, Miami). Guerrier is a resident artist at the Bakehouse Art Complex and a board member of Oolite Arts and Locust Projects.

This stint garnered him a Grammy nomination for his participation in the album Masters of Cuban Son. In 2018 Cortadito toured with world-renowned percussionist Sammy Figueroa.
