To commemorate National Adopt a Cat Month and Father’s Day, PURRR Adoption + Sanctuary (PURRR) – a nonprofit organization with a mission to transform cats’ lives one PURRR at a time, through rescue, adoption, and spay + neuter initiatives – will host “PURRRS & POPS” on Sunday, June 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. The free event is open to the public.

The community is invited to an open house to visit adoptable cats and learn about fostering, adoption and volunteering at PURRR, and vote for South Florida Top Cat Dad. Guests will enjoy delicious food and drinks in purr-fect company while discovering ways to support PURRR’s mission to help more cats find their happy ever after.

This Father’s Day, PURRR is searching for South Florida’s Top Cat Dad who raises whiskers and expectations. Cat dads, foster dads, rescue dads and dedicated volunteers are all welcome to enter for the chance to win. To enter, participants can either direct message @purrr.family on Instagram or email info@PURRR.org their favorite photos. Participants will get a bonus entry if they upload a photo and tag @purrr.family in a post. Bonus points for funny photos, rescue stories and cats with very strong opinions.

The deadline for photo submissions is Wednesday, June 10, and the community will vote for the winner leading up to Father’s Day weekend, including at the “PURRRS & POPS” event. Each vote is a $1 donation that helps a cat in need. The top five finalists will be featured across PURRR’s social media pages. The winner will be announced on Friday, June 19.

As June marks National Adopt a Cat Month and National Hug Your Cat Month, it’s the perfect time to find a forever feline friend. While most adoption services are self-service, PURRR believes that every cat has someone and finding the right feline companion is a special journey. Through its “Find Your One” process, PURRR’s team helps future cat moms and dads find their soul cat and guides them every step of the way.

With over 150 adoptable cats, the PURRR team knows every cat – their personality, history, quirks and what kind of home they need to become themselves fully. Whether future cat parents are seeking a playful and energetic kitten, a calm and cuddly adult cat, or a wise and gentle senior, PURRR’s diverse selection of feline friends ensures there’s a perfect match for every home. Soul cat profiles built around personality are available on each feline friend in PURRR’s care.

The “Find Your One” experience starts with filling out an application to help PURRR’s team understand the adoptee’s preferences, lifestyle, and what they’re looking for in a cat companion. Within 48 hours, a PURRR team member will schedule a meet and greet for the chance to see firsthand the personalities and quirks of feline residents. After connecting with a potential furry family member, PURRR schedules a 15-minute in-home, educational consultation to ensure a smooth integration into the home. PURRR prioritizes the new feline family member’s well-being and conducts a comprehensive final medical examination and bloodwork before taking the lifelong feline companion home. The PURRR team will check in after a week to ensure a smooth transition and address any questions. Beyond adoption day, PURRR provides support, resources, and guidance throughout the journey as a pet owner.

Born and raised in southern Spain, Florencia Clement de Grandprey is a self-taught mixed media figurative artist whose mission is to empower and inspire through meaningful and uplifting artwork. Her artistic journey began in 2014 when she left her full-time job in interior design to follow her true passion: painting. Meet Henry Sullivan – 27, gay, Autistic, and completely enchanted by the sweeping romance of 19th-century British novels. He’s read Wuthering Heights 67 times; dreamed every scene… but nothing in those pages prepared him for the complexities of modern dating. Join Henry on his journey through love, heartbreak, identity, and acceptance – navigating a world that doesn’t always understand him and learning to write his own kind of love story – in Island City Stage’s Florida premiere of Light Switch by Dave Osmundsen. Tickets are on sale now for the play running May 21 – June 14.

This poignant coming-of-age story thoughtfully portrays one remarkable young man’s journey to find anything — or anyone — that lights up his heart the way 19th century romantic literature does. When Henry ultimately meets a potential match in Joseph, he wonders if Joseph will be the one to “flip the switch.” Funny, moving, and profoundly relatable, Light Switch captures the power of imagination, the longing for connection, and the courage it takes to be truly seen.

Autistic playwright Dave Osmundsen’s work explores the intersections of queerness and neurodiversity. Light Switch received its world premiere with Spectrum Theatre Ensemble in April 2022. Light Switch was also the 2021 Distinguished Achievement recipient of the Jean Kennedy Smith Playwriting Award, an Honorable Mention finalist for BAPF 2021, longlisted for the Theatre503 International Playwriting Award, a finalist for the 2020 Carlo Annoni Playwriting Prize, and a semi-finalist for the 2020 National Playwrights Conference. Osmundsen’s work has been seen and developed at KCACTF Region 8, the Kennedy Center/NNPN MFA Playwrights Workshop, B Street Theatre, the William Inge Theatre Festival, the Midwest Dramatists Conference, Phoenix Theatre Company, Clamour Theatre Company, Premiere Stages, and more. He was one of two recipients of the Blank Theatre and Ucross Foundation’s inaugural Future of Playwriting Prize. His one-act, A Firework Unexploded, was a semi-finalist for the NYC Audio Theatre Writing Contest and was produced by Pint-Sized in London. His plays have been published by or are forthcoming in The Dionysian, Canyon Voices, Exposition Review and Broadway Play Publishing. MFA: Arizona State University.

Island City Stage’s production of Light Switch is directed by theater veteran Michael Leeds and stars Gage Callenius as Ezra, Eric Gospodinoff as Joseph, Larry Toyter as Roggie, Irene Adjan as Marian, and Luis Roberto Herrera as Aaron/Ken/Another Guy.

Light Switch co-producers are Funding Arts Broward & Mark Loeser and the Opening Doors Charitable Trust; Lights and Sound Sponsor is Scott Bennett; Talent Sponsors are Jim Morgan & Joe Rodonis; Costume Sponsors is Richard Meyerson; and Set Sponsor is Glenn Goldberg. Additional funding is provided by the following: The Our Fund Foundation, The Schubert Foundation Inc., the SHS Foundation, the Warten Foundation, and OutClique.

Individual show tickets start at $50. A Mimosa Sunday performance sponsored by Misty Daniels will take place on May 31. The show runs for one hour and 50 minutes with an intermission.
