The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, recognized as Broward County’s premier shopping destination, will present The Front Porch Project, a new month-long photography portrait exhibit by Michael Murphy chronicling South Florida life during the COVID-19 quarantine. The walk-through retrospective will open on Tuesday, June 9, at 11 a.m. in the space across from Altar’d State, next to Swarovski.

Captured by professional photographer Murphy, The Front Porch Project features 32 18” x 24” canvas-style portraits illustrating a cross-section of Fort Lauderdale leaders and community members enjoying life from their front porches, yards and places of business. Included in the slice-of-life portrayals are Lisa Scott Founds, CEO of Winterfest, internationally recognized entertainers Latrice Royale, Jim Buff (Electra) and Miss Varla Jean Merman, Lori Parrish, Brett Rose of UNCS, Kim Vassar, vice president of philanthropy at Arc Broward, Jessica Kersey Rodriguez, director of major gifts at South Florida PBS, Alan Goldstein and Robert Hughes of Over the Top, Wilton Manors City Commissioners Scott Newton and Paul Rolli plus others.

He currently also plays with some of the biggest names in South Florida such as Nu Deco Ensemble, Nicole Henry and The Spam All-stars as well as doing many other gigs and sessions. After months of lockdown, kids now have something to look forward to this summer. Jungle Island, Miami’s popular outdoor eco-adventure attraction, is planning to offer a safe Jungle Adventure Camp for children ages 5 to 12 years old from July 6 – August 7, 2020, in accordance with CDC and Miami-Dade County guidelines. Kids will finally have the opportunity to break out of their shell, meet new friends, and enjoy animal and nature discoveries of the wildest kind.

Summer Adventure Camp will be offered from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday at a weekly rate of $175 per week, per child, or daily for $60 per child. Join us to revisit the classic work by Harold Pinter, “El Amante,” all from the comfort and safety of your home. This short play attempts to discover the deepest relationships of two beings immersed in an unsatisfactory love relationship, which leads them to search for successive lovers. The work is a reflection on love, the couple, commitments of love, and the way to reinvent relationships. Immersed in a perverse game, the couple invents, out of boredom, seduction games that will end up confusing reality with fiction and rushing them towards an unexpected end. With performances by Marilyn Romero and Julio Rodríguez, under the direction of Pedro Balmaseda.

These stage readings will take place in Spanish. In collaboration with MarGi Happenings, and thanks to the support of the Cultural Affairs Department of Miami-Dade County and the State of Florida. “3060 sq. ft.” is a site-based intervention comprising a large 36 x 85 feet vinyl billboard advertisement that activates the Miami Design District property. Sourced and shipped directly via an online used billboard website, “3060 sq. ft.” physically makes real and sculptural a two-dimensional image; with content that was unknown until its arrival and installation within the Paradise Plaza space. History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will reopen to the public on June 15, just in time to celebrate National Caribbean-American Heritage Month. The attraction will present “The Island Imprint: The Art and History of the Caribbean Community in Broward County,” a historical fine art exhibition produced by cultural nonprofit Island SPACE (islandspacefl.org) through June 29 in The New River Inn (231 SW Second Avenue).

This second staging in a multiyear initiative celebrating Broward County’s Caribbean heritage displays the works of three artist-contributors. Photo artist and curator David I. Muir (Jamaica) shares a selection of photos from the “Caribbean-American” collection, printed on canvas and featuring Caribbean scenes around Broward County. Two-time photography participant Sonya Sanchez-Arias (Trinidad) shares pieces from her “Fragments” collection, in which images she has captured from the Caribbean region are digitally manipulated, printed on metal, and mounted on natural, reclaimed materials. Mixed-media artist Krystle Sabdul (Jamaica) has included a variety of expressive, oversized portraits. The historical aspect of the exhibition, curated by Calibe Thompson (Jamaica), traces the Caribbean community’s roots in Broward through news clippings, archival photos and information displaying the influence of diverse island people on the vibrant fabric of Greater Fort Lauderdale.

Support for the project has been provided, in part, by the Broward County Cultural Division and the following Funds at the Community Foundation of Broward: Helen and Frank Stoykov Charitable Endowment Fund, David and Francie Horvitz Family Fund, Ann Adams Fund, Mary and Alex Mackenzie Community Impact Fund, Blockbuster Entertainment Unrestricted Fund, Robert E. History Fort Lauderdale is proud to showcase a variety of annual multicultural exhibits highlighting African American, Caribbean and Latin artists sharing their views of history. Permanent exhibits include “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows guests to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of narratives and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale.

Admission to “The Island Imprint: The Art and History of the Caribbean Community in Broward County” is free with History Fort Lauderdale general museum admission – $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). In compliance with local and state health guidelines, visitors will be required to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing of six feet apart. The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, recognized as Broward County’s premier shopping destination, has announced emerging songstress Carly Jo Jackson as its next featured performer on Happy Hour with The Galleria, a virtual music series, scheduled for Thursday, June 4, at 5 p.m. on Facebook Live.

With a voice filled with grit and soul, Carly Jo Jackson brings the heat of the Florida sunshine to all she does. She has a vocal tone that is as infectious as her charismatic stage presence. She caught the attention of some big names in the music and entertainment business, opening shows for Michael McDonald (who also provided vocals on her recent EP), Kenny Loggins and Dennis Quaid and serving as a musical inspiration to Jeff Bridges who recently featured her on his Sleep Club website. Guitars Over Guns is a Miami-based 501(c)(3) non-profit that offers students from disadvantaged backgrounds a powerful combination of music education and strong mentoring relationships with professional musicians to help them overcome hardship, find their voice, and reach their potential as tomorrow’s leaders. Guitars Over Guns endeavors to create safe spaces for youth to express themselves through music, offering a supportive environment that empowers them to make positive choices at school, at home, and in their communities. Established in 2008, the organization has grown to include a satellite program in Chicago, and has served more than 3,000 students over the past decade.

The Guitars Over Guns program is made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

The Guitars Over Guns program is funded in part by The Children’s Trust. The Children’s Trust is a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County by making strategic investments in their future.

The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) is launching a new, Miami-based project for local artists to showcase their talents. The project, titled SMDCAC Sessions, supports local artists in Miami financially, emotionally, and creatively during this difficult time.

The Center is reaching out to local performing artists who have an ongoing relationship with the center to perform a three to five-minute video performance that will be broadcast through the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center’s Facebook page.

SMDCAC will provide a guaranteed fee to each artist who participates as well as a call-to-action for audiences to donate to the artist or their cause during the performance.

The performer of the night is Siempre Flamenco. It was founded in 2002 by Celia and Paco Fonta as a not-for-profit corporation. They had the purpose of promoting awareness and preservation of the art and traditions of Flamenco. Paco and Celia Fonta are nationally recognized performers of Spanish flamenco song and dance.

La obra presenta a un terrateniente hipocondríaco, lleno de tics y manías, decidido a pedir en matrimonio a la hija de su vecino. El divertido encuentro entre estos tres personajes, lleno de enredos y discusiones, llega a armonizar para concertar la boda en el clímax de una pelea constante.

The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) is launching a new, Miami-based project for local artists to showcase their talents. The project, titled SMDCAC Sessions, supports local artists in Miami financially, emotionally, and creatively during this difficult time.

The Center is reaching out to local performing artists who have an ongoing relationship with the center to perform a three to five-minute video performance that will be broadcast through the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center’s Facebook page.

SMDCAC will provide a guaranteed fee to each artist who participates as well as a call-to-action for audiences to donate to the artist or their cause during the performance.

The performer of the night is Mr. Pauer (Toto González) is a Latin Grammy® Nominated producer and re-mixer born in the Caribbean city of Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela, based in Miami, FL. for over 21 years.

He is considered one of the pioneers in the new sounds of Latin electrónica receiving recognition for his debut album “Soundtrack” earning him a nomination for “Best Alternative Album” in the 12th annual Latin Grammy® Awards. He is a music connoisseur and researcher of percussive rhythms from around the world.

Join us for LIVE with Mainly Mozart, a unique series of seven free live online events. Occurring every Saturday from May 16 through June 27, 2020 at 4 p.m., these curated broadcasts will feature a stellar lineup of artists in performance and conversation, sharing behind-the-scenes insights, excerpts from past performances, and live musical moments. The events will feature librarian-curated exhibitions related to each performance and other elements designed to foster social engagement.

In response to this unprecedented time, each event will be simultaneously streamed live on multiple platforms: Mainly Mozart Festival website, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube channels. All viewers and participants will be able to experience the events live or on-demand.

The Festival is co-presented with the University of Miami Libraries and is made possible in part by a University of Miami rapid response grant.

Business for the Arts Broward (BFA) continues its Arts Mean Business Speaker Series (AMB) with the return of renowned graffiti artist Cey Adams as a free virtual event. Due to limited space, viewers who wish to attend the Q&A are required to RSVP at rvegas@bfabroward.org or call 954-940-5344 to receive the link.

Adams emerged from the downtown graffiti movement to exhibit alongside fellow artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. The New York City native appeared in the historic 1982 PBS documentary Style Wars, which tracks subway graffiti in New York. He served as creative director for Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons’ Def Jam Recordings, where he co-founded the Drawing Board, the label’s in-house visual design firm, creating visual identities, album covers, logos and advertising campaigns for Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Notorious B.I.G., Maroon 5 and Jay-Z.
Adams exhibits, lectures and teaches art workshops at the Smithsonian

AMB is just one of several ways BFA supports local artists while fostering cultural vitality, creative success and economic development. BFA continuously supports the local arts community and promotes local artists, cultural non-profits and diverse art-related projects. The Koubek Center couldn’t go virtual without bringing you music from some of our favorite local musicians! They’ll be presenting 30 minute unique musical performances on Instagram and Facebook Live, featuring talented Miami performers such as Venezuelan violinist Daniela Padrón.

Daniela Padrón adapts some of the most well known pieces of J.S. Bach into different Venezuelan Folkloric Rhythms including joropo, gaita, merengue among others.

She is a Venezuelan-American violinist, nominated to the Latin Grammy (2013) as the violinist of the acclaimed Venezuelan world music band Gaêlica, in the Folk Music Category.

She has appeared at some of Venezuela’s most prestigious halls, including Teresa Carreño Cultural Complex, Central University of Venezuela, and Lia Bermudez Arts Center. Daniela is a proud Orchestra Conductor of one of the Miami Music Project’s children orchestras. She also runs her private studio with local and international students.

While Miami Children’s Museum’s facility is temporarily closed to the public due to current Covid-19 restrictions, it remains dedicated to serving the community and fulfilling its mission by being a beacon for South Florida families. The Museum has joined with Caleb & Calder Sloan’s Awesome Foundation and partnered with Farm Share, a leading statewide food profit, to help the less fortunate and hungry in our community with an Awesome Food Giveaway!

It is a contactless delivery system for a drive through pickup. Cars must enter the drive to the Museum and form a line. When it is their turn, they can pull up to the distribution point with their windows up and their trunks open. There will be food packages for up to 500 families on a first come first served basis. No walk ups will be allowed.

“When our sons were young, their favorite place was the Miami Children’s Museum. Our son Calder visited the Museum on the evening before he unexpectedly passed. The Museum is not only a happy place, but a sacred place for us. The Caleb and Calder Crane Factory in the Port of Miami exhibit dedicated to Mr. Awesome warms our hearts. We’ve long partnered with Deborah Spiegelman and her excellent team at the Miami Children’s Museum on numerous events. United Way of Broward County’s Women United, a powerful network of women confronting head-on the most critical issues facing the Broward County community, is hosting its 9th Annual Magnolia Luncheon virtually on Wednesday, June 3, 2020. Col. Nicole Malachowski will participate in a virtual Q&A style discussion with the “who’s who” of Broward County women.

The event that recognizes women of dignity, strength and perseverance will take place from 11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The event’s co-chairs are author Susie Levan and April Lewis-Parks, Consolidated Credit.

All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit United Way of Broward County’s COVID-19 relief campaign to raise funds that will be used for two key areas, food assistance and emergency financial assistance.

The racecourse will be timed by AccuChipUSA, Inc. and awards will be given to runners within the “top 3” categories and age groups. A FREE race t-shirt will be given to all registrants.

The Salvation Army serves over 15,000 Broward County residents, every year, and more than 70% of its funding comes directly from the community – individuals, groups and businesses.

The race is named after The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettles which are staffed during the holidays to collect funds for families in need. Last year, The Salvation Army of Broward County raised $213,205 in just five short weeks in November and December. In addition to the Kettle Krush 5K and the holiday Red Kettle program, The Salvation Army of Broward County feeds hundreds of families through its annual free Thanksgiving meal initiative in partnership with The Cheesecake Factory, and distributes over 8,000 gifts to over 2,100 children though its Angel Trees and Holiday Toy Shop.

Advance registration fees for the Kettle Krush 5K are $10 for kids ages 2 – 8 (100 m – Kid’s Fun Run), $20 per participant 18 and under and $25 for registrants 19 and over. A month prior to the event, prices will increase. Individuals and teams can sign-up at https://tinyurl.com/KettleKrush2020.

Back by popular demand, world-renowned marine artist, conservationist, scientist and entrepreneur Dr. Guy Harvey will continue to share his expeditions, insights of the sea and art techniques for families and communities confined to their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic through free online art sessions, discussions and educational videos with his daughter Jessica on Facebook Live Saturdays and Tuesdays in April.

The topics and schedule for upcoming sessions are as follows (times are EST):
• MOVIE DAY! (Saturday, April 18 at 11 a.m.) – This Facebook Live kicks off with a showing of “In the Footsteps of Hemingway: A Guy Harvey Expedition.” Dr. Harvey and Jessica will then share their thoughts on the expedition and what inspired them, with a focus on healthy ecosystems. A coral reef painting art session with Dr. Harvey will follow.
• INVASIVE SPECIES (Tuesday, April 21 at 3 p.m.) – During “Jessica Harvey’s Expedition Notebook,” viewers will learn about the terrestrial and marine invasive species, the green iguana and lionfish. A discussion will focus on how they disrupt the ecosystem and what we can do to help. Dr. Harvey will then lead an art session focused on lionfish.
• MOVIE DAY! (Saturday, April 25 at 11 a.m.) – Tiger sharks, their migration patterns and habitats come to life through the documentary “Tiger Shark Express: A Guy Harvey Expedition.” Dr. Harvey and Jessica will discuss interesting data collected from tiger sharks, cyclic migrations and dual habitat use, which will then be followed by a tiger shark painting session.
• INSHORE HABITATS (Tuesday, April 28 at 3 p.m.) – Following three short videos on mangroves and seagrass from “Jessica Harvey’s Expedition Notebook,” Dr. Harvey and Jessica will discuss mangroves and seagrass, global warming and coral reefs. The art session focuses on painting a manatee and redfish.

Artist and educator Edwin Hernandez-Mojica will livestream a miniMakers painting session where participants will receive step by step instructions to create their own miniMasterpiece inspired by the artist Claude Monet.

To follow along, you’ll need: Canvas (9” x 12” or 11” x 14”) (cardboard works too!), acrylics set, brushes (3 to 5, in different sizes), napkins or paper towels, cup with water, paper plate or palette, blow dryer and an old shirt or apron to stay clean (optional).

Mandated, statewide shelter-in measures have forced the Museum of Graffiti to shutter their doors, but the museum is maintaining a robust online presence ranging from daily art talks on IG live to downloadable graffiti coloring books.

The Museum of Graffiti’s opening for The ProCESs, featuring new paintings and drawings by famed NYC style master CES will be live-streamed on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at 5pm via ZOOM.

Visitors will receive an interactive tour through the exhibition while listening to a discussion of the work by CES and museum co-founder Alan Ket. Guests will be able to submit questions in real time and will also be the first to receive links to purchase newly released limited edition works. “Although it’s important that we all make sacrifices right now, sheltering-in does not mean we have to give up on cultural offerings and unique experiences,” said Allison Freidin, co-founder of Museum of Graffiti. “Our hope is that our virtual art talks and exhibition openings bring joy and stimulation into people’s homes. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t crack a smile when they see CES’ clever polymorphic drawings.”

ProCESs, curated by Carlos Mare, will present a variety of the artist’s small-scale marker illustrations showcasing his fine art talent, and the large-format spray paint works on canvas that he is well known for.

Inspired by ordinary objects in the world around him, whether a landscape, still life or a grilled cheese sandwich, CES has delivered a portfolio of unique drawings with a variety of both overt and whimsical illustrations that show how adept he is as a draftsman with traditional mediums, pencil and markers. His namesake signature or “tag” is revealed within each image as a nod to his graffiti roots. Whether CES is spelled out in a drawing of couch cushions or sliced Wonder Bread, each piece highlights the artist’s imagination and sense of humor.

CES’ canvas works showcase what he is acclaimed for – “Wild Style” lettering. He is instrumental in furthering a style of jagged, aggressive and hard edge letters as opposed to the rounded or bubble style of classic graffiti lettering. His letter and design innovations have influenced an entire generation of new artists in the US and throughout the world.

Born in the Bronx in the 1970s, Robert Provenzano, professionally known as CES, began his career in the early 80s. Influenced by the first wave of original NYC street artists who created vast works of graffiti on subway trains and walls, he was instrumental in developing the streamlined and aerodynamic “Wild Style” alphabetic reconfiguration in contemporary graffiti that is seen today. CES has a reputation for fine details in his artwork whether it’s his name or in the thematic murals he executes, this translation from paper to canvas, to the streets is what makes him such an exceptional artist.

CES has collaborated with brands like Puma, T-Mobile, The Palms Casino Hotel in Las Vegas, Seamless/ GrubHub, Nickelodeon, Vans, Marriott Bonvoy, and Turner Broadcasting. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Source, Mass Appeal, Complex, Juxtapoz and TimeOut New York. Currently, he exhibits his work globally and is an active mural painter who was recently commissioned to paint an inaugural mural for the newly opened Museum of Graffiti in Wynwood Miami. He also premiered a solo exhibition of his unique collection of WU-TANG CLAN logo inspired drawings for the Showtime/Mass Appeal WU-TANG CLAN: of Mics and Men documentary.

Pamela Bauer Mueller has a well-deserved reputation for showcasing men and women of significance in American history. Isadora Duncan was an American pioneer of concert dance at the turn of the 20th century, a self-styled revolutionary, whose innovative free-spirited style broke with the dominant rigidity of ballet and led to what is now called modern or contemporary dance. Dance NOW! Miami (DNM), one of the leading companies in Florida, will reconstruct four essential works of Duncan’s for their annual Masterpiece In Motion series, at their Program II Contemporanea, along with featuring guest company Italy’s Opus Ballet, Saturday, March 21, at 8:30 pm, at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center.

The evening also features guest company Opus Ballet, from Florence, Italy, one of Italy’s rising contemporary dance troupes, on their first U.S. tour. They will share the stage as part of the ongoing Dance NOW! Miami Bridges Project. DNM was in residence in Italy and collaborated with Opus Ballet last spring, where they performed the original Bridges NOT Walls. This time both companies will be performing in Opus Ballet’s original Caravan, a commentary on the European crisis with migration and culture. “To bring a company from Italy here to South Florida, to partner with them, means so much to me, having been raised in Italy and now having lived here for decades,” says Dance Now Miami Co-Artistic Director Diego Salterini. Additional work from each company will round out the program.

Tickets for the Saturday, March 21 Contemporanea 2020 evening are $35 general admission, and $15 students (at the box office in-person only). Dora García: Rezos/Prayers Miami is an innovative audio installation that focuses the Spanish artist’s performative practice onto a day in the life of Miami. Commissioned by MOAD, Rezos/Prayers Miami makes personal and specific experiences into collective and universal invocations.

For the Miami iteration of the Spanish artist’s ongoing project, first enacted in Madrid in 2007, eleven individuals, placed in various locations or public transit routes around the city, recorded forty-five-minute narrations of their observations, noting both every day and unexpected details. These recordings of “incessant description, recited like a prayer,” posted online as digital audio files, constitute an archive of subjective interpretations that document a particular place at a particular time.

Garcia says the “recited descriptions are as much of people, situations, attitudes, events, as of buildings, structures, itineraries, activities, routines, objects, atmospheres, circumstances, sounds, smells, including also the impressions, deductions, and intuitions of the describing or narrating subject.”
