$FREE

Please plan to be prompt and to attend the entire workshop – no latecomers.
Space is limited to 16 attendants. RSVP is required by 5:00 PM on July 12 to splash@cannonballmiami.org. Please indicate if you will be attending solo or with a partner.

This basic training will develop your rudimentary massage skills by exploring simple strategies for the use of hands, fingers, forearms, and elbows, and for listening through touch. Massages will occur while seated in chairs, and will not involve any additional equipment, creams, or oils. Participants will remain clothed throughout the training. Arriving solo is totally fine, but if rubbing strangers or semi-strangers seems odd, feel free to bring a partner you trust.

Tea and water will be provided, but please BYO snacks.

Adam Overton is an experimental artist, and certified massage therapist (since 2007) living in Los Angeles, California, and a visiting resident at Cannonball through mid-August. His work involves performance, writing, experimental music, massage, and workshops, in formats that involve audience participation in order to facilitate odd and intimate artist‐led experiences. Overton works closely with Guru Rugu as co‐director of the experimental meditation center of los angeles and as a ghostwriter for Guru Rugu’s Experimental Meditation Hour on KCHUNG Radio.

The experimental meditation center of los angeles has no permanent location, and will be based in Miami throughout this summer. Adam Overton and Guru Rugu takes the role of artist-as-facilitator, offering small group meditation sessions, each of them of different nature. These sessions are not the traditional “therapeutic” meditations, but rather repurposed spiritual, religious, and physical forms of playful yet profound meditation, offering a safe environment for “something else” to happen. Experimental meditation sessions will be held at non-traditional locations throughout the City, and will be free and open to the public.

Friends of Nature Music Festival (FON FEST) announces the first round of musicians to participate in the Festival’s inaugural edition.  FON FEST is one of the first eco-friendly interactive music festivals in Miami whose purpose is to educate the public on sustainability, the wellbeing of the planet, and how to contribute to saving it. Thousands of attendees will spend two days experiencing live music, cultural food, entertainment, and a wide variety of interactive activities as well as exhibitors.

The Festival will feature eco-friendly initiatives from the sponsoring products to the tickets sold. In addition to these initiatives, Festival attendees can expect to be occupied at every step with activities promoting an earth-friendly lifestyle. Eco-activities include stations which teach attendees how to pick fruits and vegetables, make homemade detergent or grow personal vegetable gardens. Other activities are camping, canoeing, movies, comedy shows, live art installations, guest speakers, and seed stomping to improve the park grounds post Festival. Attendees can browse the vendor site, featuring fresh fruit markets and exotic eco-vendors such as organic soap makers, alternative energy gadgets, and more. To satisfy mid-Festival cravings, all of Miami’s famed food trucks will be on Festival grounds serving some of the community’s favorite treats.

With the goal of raising environmental awareness and promoting companies that have green initiatives, the musicians will contribute to the Festival’s mission through their support of the Festival and by being friends of nature.

Many of the comedians have performed at other festivals and now we can introduce Miami to these amazing talents at FON FEST.”

ArtCenter’s Studio Crawl, held every first Saturday of the month, invites visitors to wander throughout the ArtCenter’s two buildings, exchange with our artists in their studios and view our current exhibitions. During July’s Studio Crawl, visit Unpredictable Patterns of Behavior, curated by Ombretta Agro’ Andruff, that presents 12 artists, architects and composers that relate to patterns in very unique and distinctive ways. After visiting the 800-810 artist studios, make sure you walk down to our second building, 924 Lincoln Road, and emerse yourself in a kaleidoscope of visual patterns-from the micro to the macrocosmos in nature to man-made environments in the second part of Unpredictable Patterns of Behavior.

Also, join us Monday, July 8th at 7pm at the Richard Shack Gallery for a panel discussion moderated by Agro’ Andruff with artists in the exhibition, Felice Grodin, Eric Goldemberg of MONAD and Gustavo Matamoros of PUNTO, who will provide insights about the patterns that served as their source of inspiration.

Taste Of The Nation South Florida Is Ready To Roll

Share Our Strength, the country’s leading anti-hunger organization and producer of the highly respected annual nationwide culinary benefit, Taste of the Nation, dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the fight to end childhood hunger across America, is getting ready to roll. Now called Taste of the Nation South Florida and bigger than ever, this year the region’s premier culinary benefit is showcasing more than 50 fabulous restaurants from both Dade and Broward counties, the finest wines and spirits, and an impressive array of auction items. The much-anticipated event will take place Thursday, July 25, 2013, 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., in the spacious main ballroom of the Loews Miami Beach Hotel. Tickets, priced at $125 per person as well as VIP tickets priced at $250 per person and providing access to the event an hour before the doors open, are available at: www.tasteofthenation.org. One hundred percent of ticket sales go to Share Our Strength to fight childhood hunger.

“For the past 25 years Share Our Strength hosted two events in the region, Taste of the Nation Dade and Taste of the Nation Broward. Now Taste of the Nation supporters will be able to enjoy the best food and wine offerings from both counties at a larger event, for the price of one ticket,” notes Jamie Balhon, Southeast Regional Manager of Share Our Strength’s culinary events.

“This year’s event is creating a lot of excitement. Taste of the Nation South Florida is providing a much stronger platform for sponsors and is already generating a larger group of participating restaurants,” says the event’s Restaurant Chair, Chef Timon Baloo, of SUGARCANE raw bar grill, in Miami.

“We believe this year’s Taste of the Nation South Florida will attract not just more restaurant participants but a larger group of food and wine enthusiasts, and will continue to grow and flourish, which bodes well for raising the critical funds required to end childhood hunger in Dade and Broward counties,” says long-time Taste of the Nation Miami-Dade chairman, Chef Allen Susser, of Burger Bar and Chef Allen’s To-Go, in Miami.

The Lee Boys are one of America’s finest African-American sacred steel ensembles. This family group consists of three brothers, Alvin Lee (guitar), Derrick Lee and Keith Lee (vocals) along with their three nephews, Roosevelt Collier (pedal steel guitar), Alvin Cordy Jr. (7-string bass) and Earl Walker (drums). Each member began making music at the ages of 7 and 8 in the House of God church they attended in Perrine, FL. Here they underwent a rigorous course of training in a variety of musical instruments, including lap and pedal steel guitars. Born and raised in Miami, each of The Lee Boys grew up in the church where their father and grandfather, Rev. Robert E. Lee, was the pastor and a steel player himself.

PAINTER – Hector Figureoa

Born 1984 in New York City and Raised in Miami, H. Fig is emerging into the Art scene with his rediscovered passion for art.

Self taught artist, mostly drawing a sketching for himself or to gift a romantic interest, H. Fig started painting in 2012.

His influences growing up ,and still to this day, are street art and cartoons but has always had an appreciation for all art forms and mediums. His abstract approach to painting is done with bright colors on black backgrounds that allow the subject to matter to speak for itself.

Typically painting about human emotions and his spiritual beliefs, H. Fig paints using acrylics on canvas, wood panels and even mirrors.

Painting with his “soul and no formal training”, H.Fig’s abstract style of painting brings a unique voice to human emotion that stems from his life experience which he feels a wide audience can relate to.

PAINTER – Andrew Sloan

is an American-born, self-taught artist working from Miami, FL. His signature street-influenced, contemporary style with vibrant colors and bold outlines incorporates images and characters of daily life with elements of fashion, music, design, anthropology, architecture, and a variety of underground culture. Working much of the time on wood or canvas, Sloan also utilizes recycled objects, found materials, clothing and anything else that will hold ink and color.

First noticed in 1994 while doing manhole cover rubbings in the streets of Washington DC, Sloan’s exhibition history and gallery representation has grown exponentially in the past decade. First in Miami, through Damien B Contemporary Art Center (2005) and Art Miami (2006), then Paris (2008) and throughout New England from Burlington to Boston, Providence to Provincetown. In 2011, Sloan exhibited for the first time in Austin, Texas and returned to Paris for his second solo exhibition. He has been united in gallery shows and group exhibitions with many of today’s top contemporary artists, including Shepard Fairey, Phil Frost, Doze Green, Dave Kinsey and Jesse Reno.

Sloan has degrees in anthropology and marketing communications and a professional background in music, creative strategy, and print design. As tour manager for the Jamaican band, Israel Vibration in the 1990s, Sloan built an art history foundation from visits to the great museums of Europe, as well as, a large collection of street imagery, photographs and action illustrations.

Sloan is an active arts instructor, tutor, and community arts activist. He is a juried member of the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts Education Roster and a member of VSA Florida with intensive arts instruction experience with developmentally challenged youth and adults. In the last three years, with his wife Ursula, he has led more than a dozen 2D portrait and mural projects with a wide variety of grades and schools through short-term residencies and after-school/in-school programs, including Arts 4 Learning (2012-2013) and the Miami Children’s Museum (2012).

Sloan’s images and hand-drawn type have been used for signage, CD packaging, band backdrops, event flyers, t-shirts, print advertising, skate deck graphics, and, most recently, short-run editions of products incorporating his colorful creations. He has painted numerous large scale murals, both indoors and out, painted live at the Burton US Snowboard Championships, and has just completed a three painting commission for Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence.

Sloan is currently studying sculpture at O. Haligon Fine Art in Miami. His first works in 3D will be ready for Art Basel 2013.

Puccini’s Tosca is a riveting psychological drama that builds up to one of opera’s most stunning conclusions. Based on a play by Victorien Sardou, Puccini’s lyrical masterwork tells the story of Floria Tosca, a famous diva, who fights to save her lover in a gripping tale of torture, murder, and suicide. Photograph of Opa-locka: Mirage City Exhibition Opening at HistoryMiami on 6/27/13

Opa-locka: Mirage City Exhibition Opening at HistoryMiami on Thursday, June 27, 2013.  This is an amazing exhibition I had no idea that Opa-Locka had such an interesting and wonderful history.  The exhibition runs from June 28, 2013 – September 08, 2013, this a must see.

“Opa-locka: Mirage City explores one of South Florida’s most unique architectural communities. Based on stories and names of characters from the Arabian Tales, Opa-locka presents itself as both eccentric dream; an exotic Middle-eastern urban oasis in a subtropical paradise, and tourist’s kitsch; an architectural conceit more akin to a Hollywood film set. Founded in the 1920s in an undeveloped area of northwest Miami-Dade, the city is a highly romanticized interpretation of an exotic cultural milieu popularized by Hollywood films and archeological discoveries of its time. The exhibition presents original drawings and architectural models that reintroduce the original fabled vision, aiming to rouse interest in the city’s iconic structural design and encourage efforts to preserve its endangered architectural heritage.”

There’s no better place to savor a multitude of seafood prepared in a variety of ways including Caribbean with its Bahamian cracked conch and Jamaican Jerk grilled fish, Latin American offering paella and Peruvian ceviche, Cajun with its gumbo, jambalaya and crawfish étouffée, North Eastern offering traditional chowders, lobster rolls and clam boils, Asian with the always satisfying sushi and sashimi and, last but not least, Florida seafood with its world-famous stone crab, lobster and fresh fish.    In addition, people can head over to the “Grove Wharf” – a farmer’s market meets seafood – where experts will be on hand to help them select the right items to purchase and take home.

To complete the festive equation, the Coconut Grove Seafood Festival will have a constant stream of live music including calypso, steel drum, reggae and Island Escapism. The Festival will also feature several nautically-themed exhibitors showcasing art, jewelry and decor.

The Coconut Grove Seafood Festival is staged by Social House Events, creators of the ever-popular Grovetoberfest and Sprung! craft beer festivals.

Miami native Karina Iglesias takes center stage at Unity on the Bay to perform her usual boleros, jazzy-pop style of hip-hop and American classics on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 8:00 pm. Iglesias, as seen on NBC’s #1 hit TV show ‘The Voice’, performs with Nu-Thang and special guest artist Monique Abbadie. Tickets on sale at www.unityonthebay.org. Ticketed pre-party reception starts at 7pm.

“This concert is my own spin on top popular music. It’s my personal vocal touch on a mix of jazz, pop, and blues songs along with some new, original material,” said Iglesias, songwriter and singer. This is Iglesias’s first concert since leaving ‘The Voice’.

In 2013, Iglesias was a top 16 contestant on NBC’s #1 hit TV show ‘The Voice’. She was originally a member of Team Adam, after a two-chair audition that included Blake Shelton, and was later stolen by Shakira after her epic performance of “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World”, which became a YouTube sensation.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida to Honduran parents, the saucy, soultress songwriter is a long-time South Florida vocal favorite. The Miami Dolphins hired her through Emilio Estefan to sing the anthem at all home games, as part of the ensemble Dolphin Voices, in 2009. She was featured on Univision’s Mira Quien Baila and has taken the stage with numerous Latin artists.

Adam Levine, ‘The Voice’ coach said after Iglesias audition: “I felt like for the first time on the show, that possibly, that towards the end, that the light fixtures were just gonna’ explode, because [she is] a great singer and [she] really deserves to be here, so congratulations.”

Special guest artist Monique Abbadie takes the stage with Iglesias and the Nu-Thang at the concert. Abbadie is a pop artist who has performed at the legendary House of Blues Los Angeles, Planet Hollywood Las Vegas and Miami’s Gusman Center, among many others places. She has also been on NBCs hit show ‘The Voice’ where she recently participated on Team Shakira.

Concert tickets are $25. Meet Iglesias in a private pre-party reception that starts at 7pm. Tickets for the reception and concert are $50. Tickets can be purchased at www.unityonthebay.org or at Unity on the Bay’s The Source Bookstore, 411 NE 21st Street, Miami, FL 33137.

Unity on the Bay is a dynamic trans-denominational spiritual community dedicated to the transformation of ourselves and the world. Its values include acceptance, love, service, and gratitude.

Admission: Free and Open to the Public

This exhibition, the first major group showing of works by GUILD, features works that address the theme of water in diverse ways. The element which is most closely identified with life in South Florida is approached as an archetypal symbol of life, regeneration, and purification, as well as an important element in different religions. GUILD, a group of seven painters who emerged from the New World School of the Arts, embraces the power, inexhaustible originality, and vitality of painting—an art form whose millennial traditions enable it to articulate the aesthetic concerns of contemporary artists. Two of South Florida’s premiere musical acts will converge at the Design District venue known for showcasing the area’s best and brightest artists. Humbert and Ketchy Shuby will co-headline the evening after Independence Day, in what promises to be a high-energy night of rock and soul.

Scene veterans Humbert will bring flavorful melodies, Beach Boy-tinged harmonies and relentless rock power to The Stage in what will be only their second performance there after May’s Sound Theory Live relaunch on Wynwood Radio party. The four-piece is poised to release their first set of new music since 2006, which should be available online and on CD in August of this year.

“Very few bands are greater in weight than Humbert – Ketchy Shuby is one of them and we are very happy to be sharing the stage with them,” offers Humbert’s colorful frontman Ferny Coipel. “Pound for pound, they are heavier than us.”

Ketchy Shuby’s explosive funk jams coupled with the group’s soulful tunesmith and the manic-energy of lead singer /guitarist Jason Joshua Hernandez-Rodriguez have kept them extremely busy this year. Coming off spring a Midwestern tour that took them through the Austin, TX mega-music festival SXSW, the band caught the attention of Spin Magazine. Their momentum has carried them through early summer with near-weekly gigs throughout South Florida in support of their latest single “I’ll Take Care of You”.

When asked his thoughts on the pairing of the two bands, Hernandez-Rodriguez simply says: “Humbert is my favorite band of all time. That’s all.”

Also performing July 5th are DJ Heron and DJ Methods; food will be provided for a nominal fee by Monte’s Country Cajun Cooking food truck. Admission to the event is free before 10 p.m., $10 afterwards. For more information and to buy tickets, visit www.thestagemiami.com. The show is open to those 21 & over.

"Just like your kids, at a certain point it’s time for our events to grow up and start demanding more from us. Now that Yo Miami’s monthly Average Joe Art Sale has been around for a little over a year it’s time to take things to the next level. First and foremost, the element of accessibility will definitely be maintained despite increasing the price cap to $500 (previously $250). Just because the maximum price is being raised, doesn’t mean we’re forsaking the more affordable work; we will continue to offer a range of work from $5 all the way on up to $500.

The need for this change has risen from a desire to offer a wider and more evolved variety of work to our monthly patrons. While we’ve been lucky enough in our relationships with local artists to get work drastically discounted specially for us, at a certain point we need to offer artists the chance to fairly value their work too. Not only will this new price point allow artists to show a better range of their existing work, but it will allow us to introduce visitors to artists who were previously unable to participate because of the low price point.

In light of this new development we’d also like to announce another novelty to the Average Joe lineup. Every two months, we’ll be introducing a new featured artist who will be decorating an entire wall with their own installation. We’re excited to announce that Ruben Ubiera (Miami New Times’ Best Street Artist of 2012) is going to be the first in this new series of artists. He will be creating a mural inside the space on one wall, that will also display artwork that he’s creating just for the sale.

Otherwise we plan on continuing to evolve little by little each month, adding and subtracting elements based on visitor feedback. Some minor adjustments to note in particular include our print shop filled with affordable prints, smaller works, and merch ranging from $5-$50; also this month we’ll have The Kult (Wasabi Fashion Kult’s apparel shop) in the house with a pop up shop. As always we’ll have our custom-painted ping pong table open for play, old school video games on a projector, and Los Chamos food truck out front.

for artists….BY ARTISTS Installation #70 will showcase the Mosaic Works of Carlos Alves & JC Carroll along with Swimwear Designer Fab Silberstein.

Here’s a little bit about the artists….

Carlos Alves
Alves kick-started his post-college career with a free flowing tile installation located on the floor and walls of the Art Center South Florida. The project eventually led to commissions by a number of public and private clients in the US, and from London, to Hong Kong.

Alves is now applying his artistry to large public and private artwork projects throughout the US and abroad. Located at The Palm Beach Court House, stands a 16’ Pineapple Sculpture on the Court House lawn as well as 6 tile murals and 10 benches depicting historical illustrations of Delray Beach. At the General Mitchell Airport Concourse “C” Floor, in Milwaukee Wisconsin there are 15 mosaic medallions from 3’to15’in diameter placed throughout a 2000 sq. foot terrazzo floor designed by Carlos. An entry floor at Fire Station #21 in Los Angeles California, and recently completed a Public Art Project at the Video Visitation Center and Palm Beach Sheriffs Office in Palm Beach County, and Verde Garden in Homestead, Fl.

Alves also enjoys projects with children and has accomplished many public artworks working with them. He feels that if his art works for kids then it really works. Impending is: The Dade County Children’s Courthouse. This project involves working with elementary school children to create the tiles. Carlos believes that creating public art requires striking a balance between personal expression and working within the parameters of the project. In his mind the artist needs to create a piece that can be appreciated by a wide range of people.

JC Carroll
Lives and works with her partner/ husband Carlos Alves in Miami, Florida. She is considered one of the original pioneers of South Beaches’ gentrification in the late 1980’s where she opened ART-ACT Performance Gallery. Having studied theater/ set design and fine art at the Wolfson Campus, FIU & interned at Coconut Grove Playhouse and Bellas Artes she opened ART-ACT to provide a space to further explore the burgeoning art scene of the time. ART-ACT brought to Miami Beach new and exciting artists like Tomata Du Plenty, and group shows from NYC’s Rivington School, COLAB, Ringling School & more. The theater concentrated on plays of great significance at the time, many based on Political/Civil/Gay rights and AIDS epidemic awareness holding countless fund raisers for the hopes of a cure. JC designed and created a majority of the set designs for these plays, and performed as well. The same values that went into the shows she produced goes into her visual art.

With the motto that everything and everyone was an art form JC produced / edited ART-ACT TV on WLRN Cable Tap. A 30 min. weekly show highlighting the art scene, local and international, as well as many countless colorful personalities. Upon returning to Miami she produced & edited “Live Wire” the off spring of Andrew Delaplaines’ Wire Magazine.

Fab Silberstein
A graduate of Miami International University of Art and Design . Fab Silberstein is on the rise to become one of the top swimwear designers of the near future. Her company La Belle Rebelle puts style in style as her Avant Garde spirit is showcased.

[Description]

The objective of ‘for artists..BY ARTISTS’ (www.facebook.com/forartistBYARTISTS) is to create a social colony for artists from all disciplines of the arts. We present a unique opportunity for painters, photographers, designers, sculptors and videographers to exhibit their works in a Large Digital Format environment. Selected artists gain access to utilize the technology of Haven and present their art in a dynamic presentation.

INSTALLATION # 69

LAELANIE LARACH www.laelanielarach.com

Laelanie Larach Nieves, a self-taught artist who at 15 made her first masterpiece ( Mysterious Forrest),was born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. As the years went by,she began changing her style of painting and opted to fuse two of her passions, photography with abstract painting and the surreal style.

Each of her works has a different concept, but she predominantly uses bright colors, several textures and other techniques. Her inspiration for her work comes from different sources. It may be the open spaces, a sea breeze, or a profund silent that carries different levels of consciousness with a limitless reality; all is tranferred onto a canvas and all in done for the love of art.

Gov. Scott Accepts UEL Award for “Unraveling Florida’s Environmental Regulations”

image

Last night’s Orchids and Onions event, organized by the Urban Environment League (UEL) of Miami and hosted by the Coral Gables Museum, presented Orchids (those are the good awards) to Miami’s leading civic and environmental activists – people who have spent the better part of the last decade, or in the case of Sallye and Jim Jude, their entire lives, preserving Miami-Dade’s historic landscapes and landmarks alike. Some other deep-rooted members of the community received a less glamorous kind of recognition. Continue reading “Gov. Scott Accepts UEL Award for “Unraveling Florida’s Environmental Regulations””

Antonio Bachour / St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort

Antonio Bachour grew up in Puerto Rico and was hooked on pastry from a young age, thanks to a childhood spent in his family’s bakery. He went on to graduate from Johnson & Wales, and then spent his first few years honing his trade in Puerto Rico as a pastry cook at Sand Hotel and Casino and Westin Rio Mar before moving on to the Ritz-Carlton in San Juan, where he was pastry sous chef for two years. 2001 found Bachour States-bound, in Miami Beach, as pastry chef at Talula. And soon he was trying his hand at Italian delicacies at both Devito South Beach and Scarpetta in New York and Miami.

In 2009, Bachour was asked by KNR Food Concepts to be a part of the opening team at the W South Beach Hotel, and particularly Solea. Shortly after, he took over responsibility for all pastries for The Trump Soho hotel and its restaurants. Dessert Professional Magazine selected Bachour as one of their “Top 10 Pastry Chefs” for 2011. Now, we’re fortunate enough to have Bachour as the executive pastry chef at the new St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort creating desserts for the restaurants Atlantico and J&G Grill, and also for hotel events.

Artoconecto’s KIDSART, in partnership with the Cisneros Fontanals Arts Foundation (CIFO) returns this summer with an exciting new series of affordable art camps for children led by five contemporary artists in Miami. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, and for five consecutive weeks, each artist will lead two themed workshops per week, open to a group of 25 children, from 2PM to 5PM. It is an incredible opportunity for kids, ages 6 to 12 to closely learn and interact with working artists who live and work in Miami. The list of prominent artists who will conduct the weekly art sessions includes: Victor Muniz, Reed Von Brunschot and Olivia Ramos.

KIDSART’s workshops are designed so parents do not need to commit to all five weeks. There is a small contribution of $25.00 dollars per child, per week, which will benefit the program. That means, two art sessions per week that includes materials and snacks. The artwork created during the workshops will be exhibited at CIFO during the first weekend of August. In addition, as part of the summer programming, CIFO is gearing up for a fun calendar of cultural events for the entire family in the evenings so make sure to check the website for updates.

Registration for KIDSART is open to all children in Miami. We have also created an on-line market place, where parents can proceed to register early.

KIDSART

Tuesday and Thursday from 2PM to 5PM. Please note, week of July 4th workshops will be held on Monday, July 1st and Tuesday July 2nd.

Cost: $25 US dollars per child that covers materials and snacks.

Space available for 25 children.

Photographs of our 2013 Cruise Vacation May 11-19, 2013

This was one of the best cruises I have been on!!!  We went on an 8 day Carnival Cruise aboard the Carnival Breeze.  We visited Grand Turk, La Romana – Dominican Republic, Curacao and Aruba.  The cruise it self was amazing, the food and the staff were so awesome.  One night we did splurge and ate at the steakhouse, it was so worth the extra price. I was stuffed and had one of the best bone-in Rib-eye steak I have ever had.  I have to say that of all the stops Aruba was my most favorite, James had to drag me back on the ship.  My next favorite stop was Grand Turk, I loved the little town the people were so nice and the scenery was beautiful.  There are a lot of pictures I hope you enjoy them.

Based on the play by Edmond Rostand, the play is directed by Prometeo’s director Joann Yarrow and renowned singer/actress Cristina Rebull.

Cyrano Mio begins one year after the death of Cyrano. Roxana, still in the convent where she waited for Cyrano every Saturday for 15 years, recounts their conversations and remembers the man she loved thru the face of Cristian. During this voyage thru memory lane, Roxana realizes that she is indebted with with Cyrano, Cristina and God. She realizes that she loved Cristian with a divided soul, look for comfort in God, but it was Cyrano who kept her alive and almost happy with his wit and protection. Every minute of her memories is filled with the guilt of never understanding how sublime his love really was.

Midtown Pawn Boutique Grand Opening 7/13/13

Midtown Pawn Boutique Grand Opening
pawnSaturday, July 13th, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Midtown Pawn Boutique
261 NW 36 Street
Miami, FL, 33127

Midtown Miami officially welcomes a new business to the neighborhood, Midtown Pawn Boutique, an upscale, revolutionary, Miami-style take on the traditional notion of "pawn."

"It’s like the Neiman Marcus of Pawn, the Mercedes-Benz of Pawn, the Tiffany’s of Pawn… you get the idea," laughs President, Adriana Hernandez, "it’s the complete opposite of the dark, cluttered, seedy places you may have seen on Law & Order or in the movies."

Indeed it is. The grand facade features a giant mural that takes up the entire front and side of the large brand-new building – one that took over 5 years to complete. The mural, created by Wynwood artist and girl-power darling, Diana Contreras (best known for "Sofia Rose"), will be unveiled at the grand opening.

The subject of the mural might seem an odd choice for a pawn shop, until Hernandez tells the story behind it. It is inspired by Queen Isabella, who, as legend has it, pawned the crown jewels of Spain to fund Christopher Columbus’ speculative voyage to "India," an investment so successful that it lifted her kingdom out of a crippling debt that almost ruined it.

Hernandez says, "It’s no different today. You’d be surprised at how many of our clients are visionaries or businesspeople who want to take their unused assets and trade them – temporarily – for the capital they need to invest in a new venture or project, and who were turned down by traditional banks. We offer a safe, cost-effective alternative for financing. The way we see it, we don’t make loans, we fund dreams, just like Isabella did 500 years ago."

Aside from the unveiling, music by DJ Maximus 3000 and the free-flowing food and libations, the Grand Opening features a unique twist. Guests are encouraged to "Bring An Asset" to the party and have it appraised – an Antiques Roadshow-inspired way for guests to jump in and learn firsthand what their often-overlooked possessions are worth. Valuation Specialists from a variety of fields, from art and jewelry to antiques and handbags, and everything in between, will be onsite educating guests on "the story of their stuff."

Midtown Pawn Boutique is the brainchild of the family owned Jimenez Group, a US-based collateral lender that has operated for over 50 years. The Boutique will cater to an upscale clientele with valuable assets who may have never before considered pawn as an option. In addition, Midtown Pawn Boutique will also buy and sell items out of the posh locale, including designer handbags, jewelry, watches and other upscale luxuries. Who knows, is Pawn the new Prada?

During the event, donations will be gratefully accepted to benefit Dr. Gigi’s Raise Me Up Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3 that provides free recreational programs, family support services and therapeutic programs to children with special needs in the South Florida Community. Says Hernandez about their commitment to this organization: "My son is autistic, and I know firsthand how amazing the work they do is for mothers and families like me."

Join us for us for the AIRIE Summer Salon, an intimate gathering to benefit the Artists in Residence in Everglades program. Situated on the original Haden mango plantation, a stone’s throw from the house where environmentalist and Everglades advocate Marjory Stoneman Douglas wrote River of Grass, Ms. Ricordi’s historic Coconut Grove home is the perfect setting to enjoy a live performance by current artist in residence Ana Mendez, an audio installation by Gustavo Matamoros, work from the AIRIE collection, and light refreshments from local chefs.

AIRIE offers artists the opportunity to get to know the ecology of the Everglades by being immersed in it. By shadowing scientists in the field, hiking through the pinelands, kayaking through mangroves, and exploring Cape Sable and the 10,000 Islands, artists find the inspiration to create new work. They develop a deep understanding of the Everglades’ ecological importance, and then share their perspective through their work and creative public programs.

South Florida is home to the only subtropical wilderness in the country, and AIRIE is the only program bringing artists to the Everglades. AIRIE connects artists, writers and musicians to the Everglades by providing month-long residencies in the Park. Each visual artist donates a work inspired by their residency for the Park collection, and writers and composers offer some publication rights, creating an outstanding body of nature inspired contemporary art and music. “In a park known for its spectacular and diverse wildlife, the art and voices of AIRIE artists reveal other unique, and often missed, dimensions of this special place,” remarks Park Superintendent Dan Kimball.

AMIGOS FOR KIDS HOSTED SOLD OUT ING MIAMI CELEBRITY DOMINO NIGHT

Amigos For Kids, the Miami-based nonprofit organization that aims to prevent child abuse and neglect by valuing children, strengthening families and educating communities, hosted its signature annual fundraiser, ING Miami Celebrity Domino Night on the evening of Sat., June 15 in Miami, Fla. More than 2,000 guests took part in the sold-out event, celebrated by many as “Miami’s most popular fundraiser.” “Amigos For Kids is grateful to have celebrated one of our more highly successful ING Miami Celebrity Domino Nights, and we want to offer a special thank you to corporate sponsors ING U.S., Bacardi USA, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and all other sponsors who made this evening possible,” said Rosa Maria Plasencia, president and CEO of Amigos For Kids. “This year we exceeded our fundraising goals, with almost one hundred thousand dollars more than last year, and it was thanks to the countless AMIGOS that believe in our mission and the work that we do in the South Florida community. We are happy to have shared such a great evening with our corporate, media and restaurant sponsors, celebrities, community leaders, our hard-working staff, and every person who attended the event.” The evening featured celebrity domino players, bar courtesy of presenting sponsor, Bacardí USA, and an exciting silent auction featuring the original artwork for this year’s painting by Carlos Navarro, “Conga y Domino.”  Guests also enjoyed a live performance by one of Miami’s hottest bands “The Culture”, as well as with the electrifying rhythms of DJ Irie, of the Miami Heat.

Using the “Bonfyre” app, attendees were able to share photos, post comments and interact with other guests during the event. More than 100 celebrities walked the Orange Carpet alongside some of the celebrity hosts, which served to highlight and support the importance of the organization’s mission leading up to and during the event. Celebrity hosts in attendance included, Latin diva Charytin; Real Housewives of Miami Ana Quincoces; television news anchors Alina Mayo Azze of Univision 23; telenovela stars Juan Soler and Maki Soler;  “El Gordo y La Flaca’s” Lili Estefan; and music icon Emilio Estefan Jr., longtime supporter of the organization. During ING Miami Celebrity Domino Night, guests were treated to an array of local flavors and “dinner-by-the-bite” provided by some of Miami’s most popular restaurants and chefs, including Catharsis Restaurant and Lounge; Klass, Garcia Sausages and Belle Baking by Sunshine Promotions; Jungle Island; Sushi Maki; Mena Catering; Pasta Factory; Papa John’s Pizza; Versailles; Farm Stores; Goya Foods; Tuyo Restaurant; Elite Cake Creations; Paellas R Us; Baptist Health South Florida; Café 1909; Crazy Fork Restaurant; Café Pilón; and Los Ranchos Steak House.

ING U.S., in its ninth consecutive year as title sponsor, and Bacardi were presented with a special edition painting created by renowned Miami Pop Artist, Carlos Navarro that characterized all 11 years of Miami Celebrity Domino Night. Rhonda Mims, president of the ING Foundation and head of the Office of Corporate Responsibility, and Maggie Gonzalez, Corporate Sponsorships & Events coordinator, from Bacardi accepted the commemorative gifts on behalf of their organizations. “The energy and excitement at this year’s ING Miami Celebrity Domino Night was fantastic,” said Rhonda Mims, president of the ING Foundation and Head of Office of Corporate Responsibility ING U.S. “The success of the event is a tribute to the Miami community and the Amigos For Kids organization. Miami should be commended for the tremendous outpouring of support for this event, and in turn, the children served by the Amigos For Kids programs.” First year event platinum sponsor, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. joined ING U.S., Bacardi and celebrity hosts on stage as the Amigos For Kids Board of Directors expressed their thanks to all major sponsors, including gold sponsors, Academica, Baptist Health South Florida, Greenberg Traurig, Macy’s and Walmart; Entertainment sponsor, Dra. Maribel Santa Cruz, a recurring sponsor of the event, made it possible for guests to enjoy hours of continuous music and dancing. Proceeds from the event make it possible for Amigos to provide diverse services to children and families throughout the year. Some of these services include an after-school program at Jose Martí Park; annual back-to-school and holiday toy drives; and its year-round child abuse awareness and prevention efforts, its There’s No Excuse For Child Abuse!  campaign, and the “Amigos Strengthens Families & Communities Nurturing Parent” program.

For the third year in a row, The Stage Miami will be celebrating soul music over a two-night span in early summer. The 2013 installment of Soulfest Weekend will showcase a modern twist on soul, music, art, cocktails and food, offering the some of the area’s best musical talent and much more.

“We’re very excited about the multi-cultural flavor that this year’s lineup has to offer,” says co-owner and General Manager Johann Torres. “People should come ready to dance and enjoy a decidedly hip hop-influenced weekend.” Torres also books entertainment for The Stage and runs DNA Entertainment, the night’s presenting sponsor.

Friday’s performers The Resolvers from Deerfield Beach are a self-styled “Big-Band Reggae” outfit; the Affiliated Soul Team out of Miami delivers a smooth blend of jazz, soul, funk, hip/hop and R&B. The pedal steel-led Roosevelt Collier Trio, also out of Miami, cuts a mix of gospel, blues, soul and funk while Brooklyn, NY imports The Pimps of Joytime cap it off on Saturday, and the main act promises to deliver a nationally-touring, polished dance-party-funk vibe heavily steeped in Brooklyn DJ culture that is not to be missed.

Since moving to Miami nine years ago, he has become very involved in the community. James has enjoyed considerable success, producing dozens of shows, seminars, and networkers over the past three years.

James’ charitable works have no limit. Being so in touch with the community, he noticed a need for greater support for other philanthropic organizations operating in South Florida.

In July of 2008, James co-founded the very popular community-resource website, Soul Of Miami. In January of 2009, co-founded Life Is Art, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to supporting and promoting the arts in south Florida through events and education.

James co-founded PhilanthroFest, a volunteer based organization that connects people, passion and philanthropy in South Florida. PhilanthroFest features more than 100 South Florida non-profits and community agencies, art, music and dance entertainment, a community stage, and other family friendly attractions, connecting 1000’s of South Florida residents to valuable resources and services in many areas: Cultural/Arts/Humanities, Educational, Environmental, Health/Human Services/Disease Prevention, Poverty/Welfare, Animal Related, Recreation & Sports, and Youth Development & Services.

Miami Foundation Give Miami Day 2013 11/20/13

The Miami Foundation sets official date for Give Miami Day 2013
November 20, 2013
givemiamiday.org

Second annual online philanthropy event to build on 2012’s extraordinary success

In a social-network publicized announcement on givemiamiday.org, The Miami Foundation revealed November 20, 2013, as the official date for Give Miami Day 2013. Last year, Give Miami Day made history as the most active day of philanthropic giving in South Florida. The unique, online giving event provides everyone in the community an opportunity to build a greater Miami through philanthropy. During the 24-hour period between midnight November 20 and midnight November 21, individuals may view online profiles of more than 300 nonprofit organizations serving Miami-Dade County, and make a charitable gift at givemiamiday.org.

“The inaugural Give Miami Day was a demonstration of Miami’s charitable spirit,” said Javier Alberto Soto, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation. “On December 12, 2012, almost 5,000 donors gave more than $1.2 million to 300 organizations building a greater community. Miamians united in their support of a better community for all, investing in our youth, health care, social services and the arts.”

The Miami Foundation will maximize the community’s generosity by matching a percentage of every donation between $25 and $10,000 received on November 20 through givemiamiday.org. Donors can search and give to organizations doing the work they believe is best for Miami-Dade, which makes it easy to support the causes most important to them.

“The Miami Foundation,” continued Soto, “together with a thriving and engaged community, will reignite the new, philanthropic Miami to make Give Miami Day 2013 another milestone for our city.”

To participate in Give Miami Day, nonprofit organizations must serve Miami-Dade County and create a free profile on givemiamiday.org. The profile will allow existing and potential donors the opportunity to see the mission, work and impact of each organization. For more information, please visit miamifoundation.org/givemiamiday.

Established in 1967, The Miami Foundation has helped hundreds of people create personal, permanent and powerful legacies by establishing custom, charitable Funds. With foundation expertise, Fundholders have fostered the arts, awarded scholarships, championed diversity, taught kids to read, provided food and shelter for the hungry and homeless, and more. More than $150 million in grants and scholarships has been awarded in the Foundation’s 45-year history. Today, the Foundation is steward to more than $160 million in charitable assets. For more information about The Miami Foundation, visit miamifoundation.org.
