Merlin’s magical ball is illuminating with a mystical light pointing south to the magical kingdom known as the Florida Renaissance Festival, as it emerges for its 22nd year in South Florida at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach, Florida from February 8, 2014 to March 16, 2014.

Either witness it or be part of the different weekend fantasy themes, as there is a festival role for everyone at the Florida Renaissance Festival.”

For the 2014 festival season, the royal court announces a variety of fan favorite acts and performers returning to the Florida Renaissance Festival. Premier musical acts such as festival circuit favorite Cantiga; performing historical music on original instruments such as the medieval bagpipes, shawms and bombastic Wolgemut; bringing traditional sea music, history and stories to the stage, Rambling Sailors. First time ever at Deerfield Beach, the comedy acrobatic sensations known as Kamikaze Fireflies and back due to popular demand, The Duelists, with their dazzling display of comedy and sword fighting brilliance. Labeled as “Don’t Miss” acts in festivals throughout North America, The Limeybirds, combining high-energy antics with sharp wit, banter and their stunning harmonies, and vocal arrangements.

In 2014, Florida Renaissance Festival is unveiling the new interactive Mystery Quest. This quest will immerse audience members as detectives throughout the festival village looking for clues and solving puzzles while interacting with cast performers.

2014 Theme weekends:

* Pirates Weekend – “Pillage the Village” – February 15, 16 and 17.

News: ACLU of Florida Statement on Marriage Equality Lawsuit Filed January 21, 2014

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 21, 2014

MIAMI – Today, six same-sex couples announced the filing of a lawsuit in Florida state court to challenge the state’s ban on marriages for same-sex couples.
The following statement on today’s announcement is from Daniel Tilley, LGBT rights staff attorney for the ACLU of Florida:

“Marriage equality is inevitable and coming soon for Floridians because brave couples are demanding the dignity under the law that marriage provides. We are hopeful that the court hearing this case will agree with courts across the country that the Constitution requires that same-sex couples be permitted to marry.

Following our victory last June in the Windsor case at the Supreme Court, which largely ended federal marriage discrimination, including for Floridians, the ACLU has been organizing legislative and ballot initiatives and also building lawsuits across the country—so far in Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, and Oregon—to ensure that the case that reaches the Supreme Court next leads to the nationwide solution we are all working so hard for. Just as Floridians benefited from the Windsor case and the case of Loving v. Virginia before that, we are confident that our work and the work of our fellow LGBT organizations will lead to finally bringing marriage equality to all fifty states, including Florida.”

About the ACLU of Florida
The ACLU of Florida is freedom’s watchdog, working daily in the courts, legislatures and communities to defend individual rights and personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. For additional information, visit our web site at: www.aclufl.org.

Photos of the Bird Road Art Walk by Mr Q 305

There’s nothing like a cool Miami night to enjoy a stroll around the Bird Road Art District. No matter what style of art you enjoy the Bird Road Art District has it all. Add to that wine, hors d’oeuvres, Capoeira demonstrations, Cuban Rap music (raw, uncensored protest songs at their best; sung with the pain that only living under oppression can project)…and did I mention the coolest rolling art gallery you ever saw…

News: Van Dyke Cafe Closing Statement

On behalf of Van Dyke Café

After 20 years of serving South Florida, Van Dyke Café will be closing on Sunday, January 26, 2014 with a celebration in honor of the memories we have created together. We thank all our loyal customers, staff, music directors and musicians that made both Van Dyke Café and Upstairs at Van Dyke one of the most special places on Lincoln Road.

We first opened our café in the historic Van Dyke building in 1994 and have been proudly serving Miami residents for nearly two decades. When Van Dyke Café opened its doors, Lincoln Road was just becoming the travel destination it is today, bustling with outdoor eateries — perfect for people watching and enjoying the South Florida weather.

In the spirit of Van Dyke Café, Soyka Restaurant will continue with a similar live music program on weekends. We hope you will consider Soyka not only for a great meal but also to enjoy great live music by some of South Florida’s best.

To celebrate our history and honor our loyal patrons, we will be hosting a celebration on January 26 from 5 to closing. Please come by and enjoy a complimentary toast and let’s reminisce the good times! We would like to extend a deep and heartfelt thank you to our dedicated staff and our loyal patrons.

But there may be a silver lining with this closing, we are very working hard with our landlord to find space within the Van Dyke complex so that we can keep the Van Dyke Cafe spirit alive by opening a smaller version, hopefully sometime in the spring!

Miami Dade College – Museum of Art + Design
600 Biscayne Blvd.
Miami, Florida 33132
Exhibition and reception is free and open to the public.

Leonard Turkel (1930 – 2011) was coined the “Father of Florida Condominiums” by The Miami Herald and is noted as the pioneer of the Florida condominium development boom. A native of Bronx, New York, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran, developer, restaurateur, businessman, and civil rights activist who played violin and guitar, pitched baseball, had a great left-handed hook shot, and created numerous collages bringing historical photographs to three dimensional form.

Following Your Own Sense of Justice is a retrospective of his rarely seen artwork and is a true testament to the legacy of a man that proved to be one of Miami’s greatest mavericks of civic equality and community building. The exhibition is more than just an presentation of one man’s avocation. It’s the portrayal of a socially conscious movement, created by a singular vision, devoted to living equally for all.

“Spirit and Money: Prospering by Doing what You Love”
This class helps the millions of spiritual seekers to heal the erroneous separation that so often exists in their minds between Spirit and money. Most importantly, Spirit & Money author Cary Bayer teaches how to use your God-given talents to attract revenue streams by doing the work that you love–your dharma (the work that you’re here to do). This can, in time, turn a tolerable livelihood into a passionate lovelihood. It also shows you how to make a larger cut of the millionaire pie available to you in our abundant universe; and gain 200 percent of Life’s spiritual and material riches. It also teaches you a prayer that you can use on a daily basis to help create unexpected income.
Finally, it helps empower those who are already doing what they love to market their services more effectively by learning the art of spiritual marketing, and come to see that selling itself, when it’s done from the heart, can be graceful and as innocent as child’s play.

The Law of Attraction teaches that you attract into your life people and experiences based on your thoughts. This workshop, led by Relationships 101 author Cary Bayer, shows you how to prepare the way for your soul mate to show up by teaching you first how to fall in love with yourself, the basis for drawing that mate to you.
It then shows you how to let the universe know of your readiness for finding your mate—which is an inner process–then how to best let the world know—which is an outer process that involves the people in your life and the dating services on the Internet.
The workshop also trains you how to become magnetic to others, while teaching you the six steps for securing more good dates with people you’re both attracted to and resonate with, to see if such people might be that soul mate. Finally, it puts you on a clear path to looking for love in all the right places—and, magically, finding it.

Rare is the person who doesn’t have unresolved issues with an ex-spouse, parent, boss, current spouse, deceased parent or ex-boss, for example. People also spend thousands of dollars in therapy trying to resolve these conflicts.
Have you ever noticed that people who resemble the person or people who you’re incomplete with have an uncanny knack for showing up in your life in different guises? That’s no accident. This workshop will provide the theoretical framework to understand the role these people play in your life.
This highly practical workshop also comes equipped with a systematic, three-step Completion Process that frees you of the toxic energy and heavy weight that you’ve been carrying around for all these years. In this class, you’ll make tremendous progress toward finishing the first of these three steps that are vital for your physical, emotional, and financial health, and will enable you to become at peace with anyone you’ve ever known.

Inspired by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Beatles went to an ashram in India, practiced Transcendental Meditation with its founder, and awakened to the Transcendent within them. A number of songs about the higher realities of Life flowed out of them in that meditative peace—songs that helped to spiritually awaken a whole generation. As you hear these songs in class, they may help awaken you, too.
Cary Bayer taught Transcendental Meditation for more than three decades and also trained dozens of its teachers, as well. In 2010, he developed Higher Self Healing Meditation. In this enlightening class, he plays a number of Beatles’ songs that were influenced by their spiritual insights; teaches a cleansing breath meditation that they practiced; and guides you through a mantra meditation that suggests the effortlessness nature of the meditation that the Beatles sang about and that he teaches. He’ll also present an introduction to a simple meditation technique that, in the ancient Vedic tradition, is always transmitted one on one. This meditation could be learned at a later date, and practiced daily for 20 minutes at home to free you of stress twice a day, contact the higher Self regularly, and make the great peace and freedom that results a part of your everyday life.

A profile concert of acclaimed composer Judith Shatin (www.judithshatin.com) will feature a mix of acoustic and electroacoustic music performed by some of South Florida’s most outstanding performers. These include Christopher Graham (cello), José Lopez (piano), Aaron Merritt (clarinet) and Laura Wilcox (viola). The music ranges from For The Birds (cello and electronics made from birdsong from Yellowstone) to Cherry Blossom and a Wrapped Thing; After Hokusai (clarinet and delicate electronics) to Penelope’s Song (viola and electronics made from weaving sounds) to Chai Variations on Eliahu HaNavi, a set of eighteen variations for solo piano based on the popular tune often sung at the Jewish Sabbath. And, to wrap it up, there will be a performance of Tape Music∞, for any number of participants and electronics made from playing with all kinds of tape – such as duct, packing, etc. The performers are students from the New World School of the Arts and Florida International University, conducted by the composer. Judith Shatin is known for her colorful and dramatic music, called ‘… highly inventive music on every level: hugely enjoyable and deeply involving, with a constant sense of surprise…” by The Washington Post. Her music engages our social, cultural and physical environments. Shatin is no stranger to Miami audiences, having served as composer-in-residence for the Deering Estate Chamber Players series for several years, with additional performances at the Bass and Wolfsonian Museums.

It’s time for Miami to represent in this event that’s been going on for over 10 years and took place in 60 cities last year. I think we should start at Government Center or Brickell and ride to Dadeland and back. We could start at Dadeland or another station like that to make parking easier, but why not just park there early and ride to gov center for the event? Or park in the huge fec public parking lot just east of government center.

In an effort to join the battle against childhood cancer, South Florida smooth jazz artist Luis Alas will host a concert at the Miami Baptist Church West Kendall Amphitheater on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. to benefit Stand Foundation, a 501 (3) non-profit organization started in memory of Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who succumbed to the disease in 2004.

“I have had a blessed life, not of money and wealth but of amazing opportunities and this talent which I always love to put it to use to help others,” shares Alas. “Cancer took my father from me and it was a tragic loss, but when I read about stories like Alex’s and Bella it hurts me, not only the suffering the children go through, but of the parents, family and loved ones around them.”

Alas and a cast of amazing musicians and vocalists from around the country will be performing in a romantic, smooth jazz at the concert deemed “Romance by Sax.” He released two singles in 2013, one called “Mr. Magic” and the other instrumental remake of the pop ballad “You’re My Everything”, which got as high as #55 on the ReverbNation Jazz chart.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope.

To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (www.alexslemonade.org), a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $60 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 275 research projects nationally. Alas adds, “I felt I had to do something and teaming with Alex’s Lemonade Stand felt like the perfect fit so hopefully we can put an end to this horrific illness.” Tickets are $10 for general admission/ lawn seating, $20 for VIP (includes reception); military discount available –15% off with I.D.

Valentine’s Day, February 14.
Wine and cheese reception 7:00 p.m. – 7:45 p.m.
Main event starts at 8 p.m.

Listed as a “Best Bet” by the Miami Herald and “a real crowd pleaser” by the Florida Times Union, this unforgettable presentation has been enjoyed by thousands who have packed numerous venues around the country to see it. Through interesting bio-facts and an amazing variety of graphic images, Magill illustrates the incredible facets surrounding the courtship and breeding behaviors found throughout the animal kingdom. Dealing with everything from frogs to elephants, this program is “education through entertainment” in the best sense of the term. By drawing parallels to human sexuality, Magill uses humor to keep the audience loose and uninhibited. “They don’t just laugh at what they hear,” says the Miami Review, “They howl. They gasp. They cry.” This is a program full of fascinating information that, the Miami Herald stated, “Dr. Doolittle never dared to ask.” It is geared to helping people appreciate the wonders of nature while giving a whole new meaning to the term, “doing the wild thing.”

The works in this exhibition take their material and formal cues from the logistical machinations of the cut flower industry in Colombia. Miami is the main point of entry for the products of this industry: retail bouquets containing carnations, roses and baby’s breath, which enter Poundstone’s practice as artifacts of a vast industrial system producing the aesthetics of popular emotion.

At Locust Projects, Poundstone describes this vast nature-transforming system through her first video installation, which she likens to a landscape painting. The impressionistic sequences, shot in fields, greenhouses and shipping facilities, set the ambiance for a series of new sculptural works consisting of printed screens, aluminum panels and eternalized flowers. The sculptures are supported by platforms made of brightly printed cardboard shipping boxes scavenged from the importer’s warehouse near Miami International Airport.

Project Room: Alan Gutierrez, Nobody knows me better than you
Locust Projects is pleased to present Nobody knows me better than you, an exhibition by Miami-based artist Alan Gutierrez. Centered around a series of paintings, the exhibition utilizes a suite of theatrical production equipment as an arbitrary means to reframe the exhibition space as a site of production. Throughout the course of the exhibition, the artist will change the installation into different iterations, embracing process and the malleable nature of rehearsal.

Seven great musicians come together on one stage to deliver a historic concert. Jose Negroni, Nomar Negroni, Josh Allen, Ed Calle, Federico Britos, Sammy Figueroa and Roberto Perera will share an exceptional evening performing the best of Latin Jazz.
Negroni’s Trio with these Great Musicians will take the stage bringing to life known jazz standards and Latin American music, as well as music from the great Cuban composer and bassist, Israel Lopez, “Cachao” and their own original songs. During the concert, people will enjoy soloists, duos, trios, until these Seven Giants come together as one band with a repertoire of 18 musical pieces.
Puerto Rican pianist and composer, José Negroni, producer and creator of the encounter says that they are all great friends and always talked about working together, but due to professional commitments, they never did. “So I talked to each one of them until I found a date when we all could be here in Miami in order to achieve this long-due dream,” Negroni adds. Despite being all local musicians, they belong to this elite of musicians that spend most of their time on the road, either accompanying an artist, recording or performing their own work.
Each of these musicians is a winner and Grammy nominee, they have been innovative and have brought the Latin Jazz genre to great stages.
Encounter…. The concert will be a unique opportunity for those who appreciate music. According to master Negroni, audiences will enjoy “music with virtuosity treated with honesty, delicacy, harmony and melody. Great performances by artists who have given their life to music and art in general. Exciting interpretations, as they are performed by great friends.”
The concert will be held on February 7th at the Black Box of Miami- Dade County Auditorium at 8 pm.

Closing the day’s activities–a celebration featuring Flo Rida will serve not only to thank all those that participated, but to encourage others to join the movement.

In an effort to bring the community together and help create a shift of social consciousness from negative to positive, various Miami organizations are committing to take action in a lineup of events which will take place at several locations throughout the city. All activities are focused on enabling people to inspire, empower and share.

With thousands of volunteers expected to come out and participate at multiple locations, the coalition of businesses and organizations who are supporting the unite4:good Day of Unity is growing quickly. Coalition partners include organizations such as the Haiti Cultural Center, Florida International University, Neighbors 4 Neighbors, Voices for Children, Belly Motions, Special Olympics Florida, Miami-Dade College and more.

“Unity is a powerful force that can bring about change, both immediately and for the future,” said unite4:good Founder and global philanthropist, Anthony Melikhov. “In this Day of Unity, Miami is coming together and showing the world is that its residents inherently want to do good things, be kind to others and live in a community filled with positivity and the spirit of giving. It is an inspirational model that sets the bar high for many other cities across the country who will participate later in the year.”

Please join the conversation online at Facebook & Twitter using hashtags #U4GDayofUnity and #unite4good.

Unite 4: Good is a revolutionary global movement that will establish a new standard whereby acts of kindness and service become so idolized that everyone chooses to make them a part of their daily life. Through empowering action, creating new programs, and uniting both individuals and organizations in innovative ways–we will provoke positive and lasting change on a global scale. Unite 4: Good will encourage everyone to inspire, empower, share and love.

Hey South Florida….Want to experience the cult classic “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” theatrically for the first time?

Join Keepitclassic.com & PopcornNights.com for an exclusive one-night-only screening of this so-bad-its-good 80’s classic. Over the past 25 years, “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” has developed a huge following on home video and late-night cable, having never received a wide theatrical release, we thought it would be quite awesome to celebrate its’ 25th anniversary with an event where we can all share in the Killer Klown awesomeness together. 2013 actually marked the film’s 25th Anniversary but since it was never released theatrically in Florida, we figured it would be a cool way to start out 2014.

Tickets can only be purchased through Tugg.com, not at the theater.

Author Looks To Provide Voice Regarding Childhood Sexual Abuse

Miami-FL-Every two minutes someone is sexually assaulted. Author, childhood sexual abuse (CSA) survivor and activist Julie Marie Mansfield is set to kick-off her Catalyst Series that will help engender meaningful dialogue and healing to those impacted by CSA. Mansfield will speak at the 4th annual Broward AWARE! Protecting OUR Children awareness campaign press conference on January 9, 2014, at 10am at (ARC Broward-10250, NW 53rd Street, Sunrise, FL 33351). Broward AWARE! Protecting OUR Children’s awareness campaign ensures Broward County families, educators, media, law enforcement and all stakeholders use and share resources that make it possible for children to safely realize their full potential, hopes and dreams.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is estimated that 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before age 18, and only 20% of these cases are reported to the police. Ninety-three percent of children know and trust their abusers.

To help reignite the dialogue about the pervasiveness of CSA, Mansfield recently released her book Maybe God Was Busy (Amazon.com). The book traces her journey growing up behind the tourist veil of Jamaica, one of the most beloved islands in the world. It is a raw, unaltered look at an idyllic childhood interrupted by constant sexual abuse. From molestation, to incest, to sex with the “church brother,” to sex with the voodoo practitioner charged with saving a dying brother, to a pregnancy and abortion—sans anesthesia—at age 15, everything is revealed. Maybe God Was Busy is truly raw and authentic—a memoir saturated with abuse, survival, forgiveness, triumph and redemption—and yes laughter.

Mansfield’s Catalyst Series will include talks and book readings throughout the United States, the UK and the Caribbean, and will to inspire communities to mobilize to educate, empower and become agents of change to protect and prevent all children from CSA.

“The more we remain silent, the more predators attack. Silence is a breeding ground, telling people who prey on kids that we are all complicit in their crimes,” Mansfield says. “By openly and honestly discussing the ravages of CSA, we can and will bring change to how victims heal, how they shake the shame and guilt so often associated with CSA.”

Maybe God Was Busy is being hailed by critics as a major work in exposing childhood sexual abuse, constant sexual abuse and incest. Amazingly the book also finds ways of expressing humor as Mansfield does in her workshops, even while battling these horrific manifestations.

Since she wrote the book many persons; men and women; have come out of the shadows of shame and hurt and thanked her for giving them inspiration. For more information about Julie Mansfield and Give me Dignity, visit www.givemedignity.org.

Independent curator Guillaume Désanges suggests that a lecture can be considered as a living exhibition. A history of performance in 20 minutes aims at dividing the history of performance into 10 gestures which are played live: 1 – Appearing, 2 – Receiving., 3 – Holding back , 4- Escaping, 5 – Aiming, 6- Falling, 7 – Crying, 8 – Biting, 9- Empting oneself , 10 – Disappearing, discussing very subjectively those ten gestures.

Port Director Bill Johnson said the 2013 cruise season was one of PortMiami’s best with the addition of two new cruise brands-Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Disney Cruise Line-and the arrival of three new build ships including: the Carnival Breeze, Celebrity Reflection and the Oceania Riviera.

“Last year marked our greatest fleet expansion ever in a single cruise season,” Johnson said. “Looking ahead, 2014 promises to be yet another banner year. We are anticipating a surge in cruise traffic with close to five million cruise passengers traveling through PortMiami in the coming year.”

New for the 2014 Cruise Season is MSC Cruises; the Mediterranean brand, which began sailing one of its newest ships, MSC Divina, from Miami last month. Additionally, PortMiami will welcome Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, the Norwegian Getaway, in February.

Exhibition January 4th – February 6th

Born in Panama of Chinese parents, Mai Yap has been able to magically blend East and West on canvas.

Within the walls of her parents’ home, she was immersed in the beauty, balance and perfection of millennial traditions passed on from one generation to another. Outside those walls, her senses were overcome by the varied colors, sounds and energy of the tropics. Panama’s natural surroundings provided the perfect artistic inspiration.

Ms. Yap’s artistry led her to pursue the focus of her current work, to change the way people look at flowers –from flowers as common products of nature, to flowers as unique miracles of the earth. Through her technique of “extreme close ups,” she tries to compel the viewer to observe flowers in great detail.

Ms. Yap holds a B.A. in Journalism and Graphic Design from the University of Georgia. She is currently teaching at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens.

“The color in my flowers surpasses shape and form. I hope that they will delight the viewer’s senses and enlighten the mind, bringing great enjoyment.”

Pauline A. Goldsmith has worked in the global bio-pharmaceutical industry for over 37 years, in Europe and the U.S. She now runs her own consulting company, Goldsmith Consulting, in Coconut Grove providing business development and project management skills to small and medium-sized companies. Born in the U.K., she has lived in Philadelphia, Boston and Miami.

Ms. Goldsmith is active in many volunteer positions in the local art world, both in the theater and the visual arts. She strives to help others understand the joy the arts can impart. Her love of watercolors and botanical art are a consuming part of her life.

“My love of South Florida’s lush tropical vegetation has encouraged me to use watercolors to translate their beauty to paper, so that it can be shared with everyone. In my attempts to render these plant likenesses into visual art, I have become attached to their subtle transformations in different lights.”

This is gonna be one whoop-de-do weekend

Shakespeare said, “The play’s the thing.” The Miami Design Preservation League says play’s the theme-of the boffo Art Deco Weekend that fills Miami Beach’s Ocean Drive and all contiguous byways.

Even if you’ve been to all 36 previous ADWs, you don’t want to miss Art Deco at Play; it’s chock-a-block with new features like:
The Antique Experience in Lummus Park.
Indoor and outdoor movie venues.
A dance-worthy lineup of bands after dark playing jazz and standards of the Art Deco era.
Tours de force. Get to know “The District” on a 90-minute guided Art Deco walking tour, but don’t stop there. There are bus tours that cover more territory and more history than you can on foot. There are drinking tours and eating tours, tours of Lincoln Road Mall and of Art Deco pools, a nature tour and a pre-automobile tour. Check the schedule and sign up in advance.

All your favorites! Count on all the events you love about ADW: the Arf Deco parade and awards, the gleaming antique cars lining Ocean Drive, the booths that beckon with irresistible aromas and dazzling displays, the speakers whose expertise enlightens all things Art Deco.

The ADW Web site will help you plan. Start with the schedule for a bird’s eye view of Art Deco at Play. See what looks good, then get the details. It all begins at artdecoweekend.com, but here’s the inside scoop:
ADW is more than a street fair, and this year it gives the antique shows a run for their money. In fact, the best of the antique dealers are hosting the Antique Experience.

Two climate-controlled tents in Lummus Park at 11th Street will house “Modernism: Live on Ocean Drive” and “Antique Lifestyle: Sneak Preview for the Miami Beach Antique Show.” Look for vintage furniture, art, clothing and accessories circa 1925-1945. At 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, hear from the expert: Modernism’s Ric Emmett lectures on “Modern American Design.” Check the list of Art Deco and Antique vendors here.

Admission to events at the Antique Experience is free. The tents and a formal garden are the venue for period movies Friday and Saturday evenings. Things heat up considerably both nights when the lights go down and red-hot mama Sarah Jane and her Blue Notes turn the garden into a juke joint … or maybe a Harlem nightclub. If you can sit still, you just aren’t trying hard enough!

But play’s the theme, and that means kids. ADW brings out the kid in everyone with toys, toy talk, displays of long-forgotten toys and lots of opportunities to play. The Playground Stage at 13th and Ocean offers live entertainment for actual kids from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The film series at the Art Deco Welcome Center appeals to anyone who has ever been a kid: “The Wizard of Oz,” Shirley Temple flicks, even “Little Rascals” shorts. Also at the Welcome Center, a display of vintage toys (some of them interactive) and a gen-u-ine 1935 Christmas Day living room.

A bit more cerebral are lectures at the Wolfsonian on “Iconic Playthings with Historic Style” and “Childhood Memorabilia of the Art Deco Era.” But not too cerebral; there will be toys on hand and an opportunity to ask about that prized possession you’ve had since you were a kid.

You can even play a live version of the classic game Monopoly called “Decopoly”. Thats right, Ocean Drive will be turned into a giant “Decopoly” Board. All you need to do is pick a program guide and follow the instructions and you could win some big prizes like a Jet Ski Tour for Two or a trip to the Bahamas! Also, be sure to look for Shirley Temple at the Art Deco Weekend festival, take her photo and hashtag #SobeShirley (there will 8 of them – all different shapes and sizes). Post all eight and you could win some cool prizes!

Of course we’ve saved the best for last: The event poster, winner of the 2014 ADW poster contest, perfectly captures the spirit of Art Deco at Play. A 1930s melange of glamour girls, muscle men and gamesmanship in playful pastels, it tells you in a glance that this is gonna be one whoop-de-do weekend.

Miami Light Project and MDC Live Arts proudly present renowned choreographer Nora Chipaumire. Chipaumire’s performance, Miriam, is a stunning dance tribute to the life of South African singer and freedom fighter Miriam Makeba.

Miriam is conceived, written and choreographed by Chipaumire and directed by Eric Ting.
Chipaumire creates her first character-driven work – a deeply personal dance-theatre performance that looks closely at the internal battles women face between public expectations and private desires, between selflessness and ambition and between the perfection and sacrifice of the feminine ideal. With an original score by six-time Grammy nominee Cuban composer and pianist Omar Sosa, Miriam layers text, sound and images that enrich the mysterious and haunting world of Chipaumire’s creation.

The inspiration for Miriam springs from the cultural and political milieu of Chipaumire’s own South African childhood, the symmetries in her and Makeba’s exiles and her self-discovery as an artist. But Miriam also reverberates with other literary and legendary influences, including the writings of Joseph Conrad and Chenjerai Hove, and the Christian iconography of Mary.

Chipamuire describes the work as “a solo for two people,” the persona embodied by Chipaumire emerging from a pile of rocks onstage to convey-through movement and text-a woman’s struggles with the burden of objectification and the weight of resistance in a world defined largely by men. Her efforts are abetted and haunted by an otherworldly character, both angel and devil, performed by Bronx-born Okwui Okpokwasili. In their interplay, Miriam renders in vivid images the intensity of women who fight to create themselves despite the dual legacies of strict cultural traditions and imperialist racial views that define female beauty and power.

Zoo Miami welcomes “Creatures of Habitat – a gazillion-piece animal adventure” all made of LEGO® bricks. ZoMiami is proud to present this most exciting, educational, and fun exhibit from January 29 – June 22, 2014, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily, at Dr. Wilde’s World (DWW). The exhibit will be displayed both in DWW’s air-conditioned museum space as well as on its outdoor plaza. The Creatures of Habitat, a popular exhibit made up of LEGO® bricks, comes to Zoo Miami from the Philadelphia Zoo, where it captured a wide audience. The purpose of this exhibit is multifaceted: to educate visitors on the potential extinction of various animal species and habitats; to inspire them to protect our planet; to teach them how our behaviors and actions contribute to the destruction of these animals and their habitats; and how we can change our lives to ensure and promote our planet, animal species, and habitat conservation.

Visitors will be wowed by the colors and realistic settings of each exhibit, which include:

Humboldt Penguin Explore the rocky shores of Punta San Juan, Peru, home to colonies of Humboldt penguins. Be educated about the harmful effects to the penguin of over-fishing, seabird and marine mammal communities.

Polar Bear Journey into the arctic tundra as you observe an eight and one-half foot polar bear stranded on a melting ice floe. Learn what changes you can make to reverse the loss of the polar ice caps before it’s too late.

Micronesian Kingfisher Travel to the island of Guam to discover the extraordinary plight of the Micronesian Kingfisher, a small bird that was driven to extinction in the wild from the invasive brown tree snake.

Golden Lion Tamarin Be transported to a Brazilian paradise where 13 golden lion tamarins appear to frolic and play. Discover how education, translocation and reintroduction all play a key role in preserving these unique primates.

Diamond-backed Terrapin Uncover the tribulations of the endangered diamond backed terrapins!

Borneo Rainforest Three dioramas set the scene as you see a first-hand, intricate, miniature depiction of the crisis in Borneo. Explore pristine forests filled with wildlife and witness the destruction of logging and palm oil plantations.

Western Lowland Gorilla Become an imposing Western lowland gorilla in a mosaic cutout. Put yourself in the shoes of a mother gorilla carrying her young through the forests of the Congo.

Bornean Orangutan In another dynamic mosaic cutout, become a Bornean orangutan swinging through the forest. Snap a photograph to remember your journey.

Harlequin Frog Discover the harlequin frog, native to the rainforests of Central and South America and learn about the chytrid crisis that has wiped out one third of all amphibians.

“We expect this exhibit to attract LEGO® enthusiasts, artists and animal-lovers alike. We hope it will bring in many visitors to push Zoo Miami past the 1 million mark,” said Cindy Castelblanco, Zoological Society of Florida/Zoo Miami Director of Marketing.

Creatures of Habitat, designed by the Philadelphia Zoo with the engagement of LEGO® Certified Professional Sean Kenney, is the first hands-on, interactive exhibit about vanishing habitats told through sculptures made of LEGO® bricks. It took Sean and his team over six months, and hundreds of thousands of toy bricks, to create the thirty-two individual sculptures that make up the Creatures of Habitat exhibit. The whimsical habitat sets for each sculpture were conceived and designed by the Philadelphia Zoo’s creative team. Illustrations by Jo Tronc and Richard Carbajal lend a storybook quality to the sets and help inspire visitors to save vanishing species and habitats. Before coming to Zoo Miami, the exhibit was on display at the Hogle Zoo in Utah. This exhibit was not made in conjunction with the LEGO® Group.
