Beethoven is back! Beethoven on the Beach, Orchestra Miami’s popular series of free outdoor concerts returns! This year’s soloists are husband and wife duo Karen Lord Powell & Brian Powell, performing Bottesini’s Gran Duo Concertante for Violin and Bass.

Also on the program is Beethoven’s joyous Symphony N. 7 in A Major, Op. 92, the Overture, Scherzo & Finale, Op. 52 by Robert Schumann and the Overture to Il Signor Bruschino by Rossini. The 36 musicians of Orchestra will be led by Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi.

The concert is free with advance reservation- first come, first served seating. Or guarantee a reserved seat up front for $25. At the door, for those who did not reserve in advance, we will request a minimum $10 donation for entry.

Dvořák’s beloved Symphony No. 8 radiates warmth while Sibelius’ Violin Concerto featuring special guest artist Siwoo Kim stirs the soul. Schubert’s Overture in D major (In the Italian Style), a playful wink to Rossini’s famed operas, opens the program at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, at New World Center in Miami Beach (500 17th Street). Enjoy a pre-concert chat 30 minutes before the concert with Dr. Alan Mason, professor emeritus of music at Barry University for in-depth conversation and insights about the works and composers.

Radiant melodies and rustic charm define Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, a heartfelt tribute to his Bohemian homeland. Composed at the height of his career and inspired by the countryside surrounding Prague, the symphony brims with birdsong-like themes, folk rhythms, and sweeping lyricism. Joyful and deeply expressive, Dvořák’s Eighth captures the spirit of Bohemia and the heartbeat of Prague.

Haunting lyricism and virtuosic fireworks come to life in Jean Sibelius’ emotionally expressive Violin Concerto, the only concerto he composed in his lifetime. Written during a turbulent time in the composer’s life, the expressive brilliance of returning SFSO guest artist Siwoo Kim, will bring a passionate take on the demanding and dramatic work.

Siwoo Kim is an “incisive” and “compelling” violinist (The New York Times) who “plays with stylistic sensitivity and generous tonal nuance” (The Chicago Tribune). Kim actively performs as soloist and chamber musician and he is the founding co-artistic director of VIVO Music Festival in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Since his Carnegie Hall concerto debut with the Juilliard Orchestra, he has gone on to perform as soloist with orchestras in four different continents including Tucson Symphony, Houston Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Seongnam Philharmonic, Johannesburg Philharmonic, and Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie. As chamber musician, he performs regularly at festivals. He is the principal violinist of Music From Copland House. An advocate of new music, Kim premiered and recorded Samuel Adler’s only violin concerto with Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt on Linn Records. Along with ECCO (East Coast Chamber Orchestra), Siwoo recently made the premiere recording of Michael Torke’s “Last,” a 12-movement work for solo violin and string orchestra.

Hoping to gain an operatic commission from the Viennese theaters, Franz Schubert wrote two operatic overtures “in the Italian style” in 1817. His Overture in D major, composed of several tunes, and laden with Schubertian harmonic changes, is zesty, filled with operatic flair, and is pleasingly adorned with unmistakable charm.

SFSO’s 28th season of “Juxtapositions” explores beauty in contrasts, where the bold and the sublime intersect, and timeless masterpieces share the stage with today’s most compelling and celebrated musical voices.

Completing the program, Mozart’s “Haffner” symphony bursts with celebratory energy and elegant precision, while Rimsky-Korsakov’s crowd-pleasing Capriccio espagnol sparkles with irresistible Spanish rhythms at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17, at New World Center in Miami Beach (500 17th Street). Enjoy a pre-concert chat with Dr. Alan Mason, professor emeritus of music at Barry University, 30 minutes before the concert, featuring in-depth conversation and insights about the works and composers.

Haitian American composer Nathalie Joachim’s Had To Be draws on Black Dandyism – a cultural movement blending European and Black American male fashion to convey style, status, and identity – as well as broader African diasporic influences, including Caribbean musical traditions and New Orleans second line celebrations. The three-movement concerto was written for three-time GRAMMY-nominated cellist Seth Parker Woods, described by The Guardian as “a cellist of power and grace” with “mature artistry and willingness to go to the brink.”

Had to Be is positive, prideful, and radical all at once. It represents the perpetually colorful and complex intersections between race, class, gender, power, and style. It honors what it means to be Black and continuously choosing to be free. By coincidence, or perhaps to no surprise, Woods has topped the Best Dressed Lists in Variety, Texas Monthly, and OC Register.

Cellist Seth Parker Woods is a versatile artist and advocate for contemporary music, having premiered numerous concertos written for him, including works by Tyshawn Sorey, Julia Adolphe, and Rebecca Saunders, in addition to Nathalie Joachim’s Had To Be. His GRAMMY-nominated, autobiographical work Difficult Grace has been performed to critical acclaim at major venues including 92NY, CAP UCLA, and the San Diego Symphony. Woods has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Konzerthaus Dortmund, among others. Since 2022, he has served on the faculty of USC Thornton School of Music and was appointed Robert Mann Chair in Strings and Chamber Music in 2024. He has also held residencies with the Kaufman Music Center and Seattle Symphony and received the 2022 Chamber Music America Michael Jaffee Visionary Award.

SFSO is also proud to present its orchestral premiere of Four Black American Dances from GRAMMY-nominated African American composer, Carlos Simon, the composer-in-residence for the John F. Kennedy Center.

Adding to the varied program, SFSO will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 “Haffner,” a four-movement vibrant, celebratory symphony written in 1782, to honor Mozart’s friend, Sigmund Haffner, and his rise to nobility in Salzberg.

Concluding the evening is the crowd-pleasing Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol, based on Spanish folk songs and dances, and filled with vibrant rhythms that whisk audiences off to exotic, far-off places of the imagination.

South Beach Chamber Ensemble presents Music in Beautiful Spaces: Brahms and Piazzolla

– Brahms Piano Trio in C major, Op. 87 (1882)
– Piazzolla The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires (1965-69)

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a German composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor of the mid-Romantic period. His music is noted for its rhythmic vitality and freer treatment of dissonance, often set within studied yet expressive contrapuntal textures.

Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) was an Argentine tango composer, bandoneon player, and arranger. His works revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. A virtuoso bandoneonist, he regularly performed his own compositions with a variety of ensembles. In 1992, American music critic Stephen Holden described Piazzolla as “the world’s foremost composer of Tango music”.

The festival also includes the Jazz for Tomorrow Student Stage on Lincoln Road and Sunday’s all-day Power Access Main Stage with performances by the Spirit of Goodwill Band, Lemon City Trio, The Harden Project, Federico Britos Quintet, Spam Allstars, and more.
