As millions of people around the world prepared to ‘go dark’ in recognition of Earth Hour 2009, hundreds gathered at Miami’s landmark Bank of America Tower at International Place for a special Earth Hour kick-off party on March 26. The landmark tower – illuminated in a flood of green light – served as the backdrop for the event. City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and his family were on-hand to turn-off the tower’s iconic lights.

Artist Opportunity: Lombardi Co-op Gallery

Dear Life Is Art Artists & Fans,

Some good news! David Lombardi, our erstwhile (and probably future) venue sponsor, the man who kindly donated that awesome space for our first event at 120 NW 25th Street, has decided to turn it into a co-op gallery!

What he is going to do is section it up into display spaces, much like we did for Life Is Art. Each space will be 12 x 12 feet, just like our spaces were. Artists can then rent the spaces on a monthly basis to display their work. Rent is $450.00 per month, plus a $75.00 utility fee. That is only $525 per month to have your own gallery.

You can see some photos of the space below.

This is not a work-space like Art/Center or Bakehouse, but an actual gallery space. That means you will be displaying and selling your work there. It is a co-op, so you will be surrounded by other artists, and maybe a few dealers, too. There will even be a communal kitchen and office space

As you all know, one of the most important tools in selling your work is getting it out on display. This gives you a chance to do so on your own terms. Wynwood is a fast-growing arts area, so this is in a prime location.

One more thing. David has kindly offered to donate a portion of each rental that we bring to Life Is Art to help us further our mission. This money will go directly to producing more events and promoting the Miami arts community. So, please be sure to mention that you heard about it from Life Is Art.

For all the details, contact David Lombardi at david@lombardiproperties.com. You can see their website here. We think this is a great opportunity and definitely can say that David is a true supporter of the arts.

The third season in the Orchestra’s multi-year residency project has developed and expanded community programs and will continue to include service to the Miami community through educational partnerships. The Pre-Concert Conversations for the January 30 and 31 concerts will feature Juan Carlos Espinosa, associate dean and fellow of the Honors College, Florida International University.
The Cleveland Orchestra’s subscription series is presented by the Musical Arts Association of Miami and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.

Cleveland Orchestra and Miami City Ballet Launch New Collaboration
with Performance and Benefit Dinner on January 29

On January 29, 2009, Miami City Ballet and The Cleveland Orchestra will join forces to launch a collaboration with a one-night-only performance, See The Music, Hear The Dancing, at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House in Miami.
To celebrate this collaboration, an elegant benefit dinner will be held immediately after the performance, on-stage at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall. The event proceeds benefit The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency and Miami City Ballet. Tickets for the performance and dinner are $1,000 and can be purchased by contacting Rebecca Interian at (305) 929-7000, ext. 1445. Tables are also available for purchase. Cocktail attire is suggested.
The event’s name, See The Music Hear The Dancing, comes from a quote by the legendary George Balanchine. The program features Miami City Ballet performing two ballets by George Balanchine: Symphony in Three Movements set to music by Igor Stravinsky and Symphony in C with music by Georges Bizet. In addition to performing the music to the ballets, The Cleveland Orchestra will also perform Tchaikovsky’s “Polacca” from The Sleeping Beauty and Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture (“Fingal’s Cave”), Opus 26.
Approximately 300 distinguished artists and guests of both organizations are expected to attend, including the Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet, Edward Villella, and the Music Director of The Cleveland Orchestra, Franz Welser-Möst.
The event is chaired by Jan R. Lewis and Dr. Margaret Eidson. The host committee includes: Adrienne Arsht, Ana Codina Barlick & Robert Barlick, Jr., Audre & Don Carlin, Lora & Fred Drasner, Dr. Margaret & Mike Eidson, Hector Fortun, Marvin Ross Friedman & Adrienne bon Haes, Pamela Garrison & R. Kirk Landon, Jan R. & Dan Lewis, Frances Sevilla-Sacasa, Penny & Roe Stamps, and Janet & Richard Yulman.
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is the presenting sponsor and has awarded the project a grant from the Knight Foundation Arts Partnership, a five-year, $40 million initiative to transform the arts in South Florida. The effort includes endowment grants to leading arts institutions, plus a community-wide contest to fund the best arts ideas.
Knight Foundation promotes journalism excellence worldwide and invests in the vitality of communities in the United States where the Knight brothers once owned newspapers. Knight Foundation invests in ideas and projects that can lead to transformational change.

Opportunities for New World Symphony musicians,
University of Miami students, and area high-school students
Music Director Franz Welser-Möst continues The Cleveland Orchestra’s relationship with the New World Symphony and the University of Miami Frost School of Music during the Orchestra’s annual Miami residencies.
In addition, Cleveland Orchestra musicians will continue to support school music programs in both public and private schools in the Miami area. In January, Cleveland Orchestra musicians will provide coachings at New World School of the Arts and Coral Reef High School (Miami-Dade County Public Schools) as well as coachings and master classes at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove.

New Community Collaborations in January 2009
During the January residency, members of The Cleveland Orchestra will participate in an exploration of the music and politics of Stalin’s Russia on Tuesday, January 27, at The Wolfsonian-Florida International University in Miami Beach. In conjunction with the Orchestra’s performances of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 (“Leningrad”), Juan Carlos Espinosa, associate dean and fellow at the Honors College, Florida International University, will explore music and politics in Stalin’s Russia at this lecture/performance that will conclude with members of The Cleveland Orchestra performing Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8.
The Wolfsonian is a museum, library, and research center that uses objects to illustrate the persuasive power of art and design, to explore what it means to be modern, and to tell the story of social, historical, and technological changes that have transformed our world. The collections comprise approximately 120,000 objects from the period of 1885 to 1945—the height of the Industrial Revolution to the end of the Second World War—in a variety of media including furniture; industrial-design objects; works in glass, ceramics, and metal; rare books; periodicals; ephemera; works on paper; paintings; textiles; and medals.
Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and Ali R. Rezai, M.D., the Director of Cleveland Clinic Neurological Innovations and member of Cleveland Clinic Arts & Medicine Institute, will hold a special Music and the Brain dialogue at Books & Books in Coral Gables. The discussion will examine new understandings about the vast impact of music on the human brain, including a question-and-answer session followed by a short chamber music performance. Discussion topics will include how music affects the brain and its medical, musical, social and philosophical implications, the unique way in which music and the brain interact, and current research and clinical applications of music in neurological rehabilitation. This program is part of a recently launched international collaboration between The Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Clinic.
Books & Books, Coral Gables was founded by Mitchell Kaplan in 1982. Since that time, the store has become one of the most well-respected independent bookstores in the country. It’s a local landmark and an inspiring gathering place for writers as well as readers. The philosophy at Books & Books has remained constant throughout the years: it’s about neighbors, books, history, quality, tradition and creativity. Since 1982, Books & Books has hosted local, national and international writers as part of its award-winning Reading Series. Books & Books hosts reading groups, poetry groups, free workshops and lectures, and partners with many cultural, educational and charitable organizations to present special events at its four locations.

Miami Residency adds to Orchestra’s existing long-term
performance relationships and residencies in New York, Lucerne, Salzburg and Vienna
The Cleveland Orchestra Miami Residency project commenced in January 2007, during the 2006-07 inaugural season of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (then called Carnival Center for the Performing Arts). The Orchestra’s residency project in Miami includes an annual series of subscription concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center as well as service to the Miami community through educational activities. The 2008 Miami residency served more than 20,000 members of the Miami-Dade community through concerts, educational programs, collaborative performances, and patron events. These included three weekends of sold-out subscription concerts; a performance celebrating Israel at 60, presented in partnership with the Greater Miami Jewish Federation; and free Education Concerts for more than 3,500 fifth graders at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall.
The Cleveland Orchestra’s commitment to education and community service began when the Orchestra was founded in 1918, and today more than 70,000 Cleveland-area schoolchildren, teachers, families, young musicians and adult learners participate in the Orchestra’s educational programs in Cleveland designed to nurture a lifelong love of music. With its Florida-based educational activities, the Orchestra continues to broaden its role with universities and conservatories, which previously focused on the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
In addition to its residency at the Adrienne Arsht Center, The Cleveland Orchestra currently has three other intensive and regular performing relationships, including residencies, outside of Cleveland: with Carnegie Hall in New York, the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, and the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria. Continuing a long relationship with Carnegie Hall, the Orchestra committed to a multi-year association of performances there under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. With Carnegie Hall and the Lucerne Festival, the Orchestra is involved in a biennial commissioning project, the Roche Commissions, which include world premiere performances by the Orchestra at the Lucerne Festival. The Orchestra has performed at the Lucerne Festival four times since 2004, most recently in August 2008. The Musikverein Residency was conceived as a long-term relationship, which includes series of concerts at the Musikverein under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst. The Orchestra’s five concerts at the Musikverein in 2003 marked the first such residency by an American orchestra in the history of that venue. In its third Musikverein Residency, the Orchestra performed four concerts at the Musikverein in October/November 2007. During their Salzburg Festival Residency in August 2008, the Orchestra and Mr. Welser-Möst made five appearances in a new production of Dvořák’s Rusalka, and performed three additional concert programs.

Need the Perfect Valentine’s Gift For Your Love: Commission NYC Artist Noah G Pop to Create an Original “POPographic” Portrait That Will Be Treasured For a Lifetime

New York, NY (December 20, 2008) – When it comes to Valentine’s Day gift giving, is it really only the thought that counts? Imagine your love’s reaction as you tell her that you’ve commissioned an artist to create an original piece of photographic pop art with her as the inspiration, muse and object of beauty.

This unique, one of a kind portrait will undeniably be a treasured keepsake for any lucky receiver. Gift her with a once in a lifetime experience; the opportunity to collaborate in the photography and creation of a pop art masterpiece. Alternatively, gift him with the final product to cherish.

Noah G POP’s custom visages breathe new life into the artistic portrait arena; a modern, sexy and edgy take on the classic beauty portraits that have spanned our culture. Noah captures the beauty and essence of his models in his photos and has the creative ability to morph them into highly stylized, vibrant and powerful photographic giclées on canvas. “I believe being commissioned for a Valentine’s portrait is one of the highest honors an artist can receive. It is a personal invitation into a couple’s most private moments during one of the most meaningful times of the year. Being entrusted with this task motivates me to create a magnificent and magical experience to be treasured on that day and for years to come” says Noah G POP.

From his first glance though the camera’s lens, Noah seeks the truest essence of his subject. For him, the medium has become a catalyst that heightens and transforms digital photography into magnificent and imaginative new dimensions.

All commissions include a personal photo shoot with NOAH G POP, custom image creation (POPography) and conversion of images to custom photographic giclées on canvas. Portraits start at $4000 for a 30” x 30” canvas and have been produced as large as 45” x 60”. Noah G POP creates portraits of women, men, children, pets and more.

High Resolution images are available and an artist interview can be arranged.

About Noah G POP: Noah’s art has been showcased in galleries throughout New York, Las Vegas and Miami and his art and custom clothing designs are in the personal collections of Russell Simmons, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Wyclef Jean, Nicole Miller, Maya Angelou, Eryka Badu, Jill Scott and Queen Latifah . Currently, Noah is working vigorously at developing his fashion line and is planning to bring his art to consumer products everywhere. Visit www.noahgpop.com for more information.

The Beginning of Noah G POP
Noah Greenspan aka Noah G POP has been an avid art collector since 1992. In 2005, Noah decided to make the transition from collector to artist finding inspiration in the works of such pop art icons as Andy Warhol and Romero Britto and in the sensual nightscenes portrayed by Argentinean painter, Fabian Perez. Over the past three years, Noah G POP has crafted his own unique style-POPography.

What is POPography?
POPography is a unique fusion of digital photography, pop expressionism and fine art standards that brings an image from the photographer’s studio to the digital darkroom and artist’s workspace to its final home on canvas. This process heightens and transforms digital photography into magnificent and imaginative new dimensions.

Why POP art?
“An amazing part of the appeal for me is that Pop Art means so many different things to different people. Being both a photographer and a digital artist, I have a great deal of latitude in creating work for my clients. I always look forward to the challenge of creating a magical experience for people,” says Noah G POP.

Noah G POP’s Story
Noah Greenspan, 38, was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He is a practicing cardiovascular and pulmonary specialist as well as educator and published researcher. He has been named Best Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapist in the US for the past 3 years by Best of the US. Greenspan is also an Emergency Medical Technician and a SCUBA Diving International Instructor.

Where is Noah G POP?
Noah’s art has been showcased in galleries throughout New York, Las Vegas and Miami and his art and custom clothing designs are in the personal collections of Russell Simmons, Pele, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Wyclef Jean, Nicole Miller, Maya Angelou, Eryka Badu, Jill Scott and Queen Latifah. Noah G POP has participated in Art Expos New York and Las Vegas. His work “Flatiron” Building has been featured on the cover of Art Business News.

Where is Noah G POP going?
Noah G Pop has only just begun his rise in the art world. He is destined to become a permanent figure on the Pop Art scene with a newly-developing fashion line and an even faster growing collector base.

“Inside the Minds of the Truly Wealthy”
presented by Dr. Steve Kraus Vice President, The Harrison Group
Understanding your affluent customer is paramount to success in 2009.

The economic shifts, new perceptions of wealth, lack of trust in our financial system, stealth purchasing and the widespread belief that the only way out of this dilemma is to increase taxes has the affluent reeling and pulling out of the market.

In his new provocative book, Inside the Minds of the Truly Wealthy, marketing and branding expert Stephen Kraus mines success stories of the truly rich to learn how they acquired their fortunes, whether it has changed them and how they live their lives.

Arguing that the wealthy are poorly understood by the average American, the media and marketers of high-end products, the authors contend that accurately understanding this group is critical for success in the marketing, sales, product development, branding and advertising fields. They dispel the myth that most of the rich have inherited their money and reveal the socioeconomic factors behind their self-made rises to success.
Exploring how the rich spend their money and what influences their buying decisions, the authors identify the five classes of the newly wealthy with distinct reactions to the value and purpose of money; groups that greatly differ in their lifestyles and financial attitudes. Charts and graphs throughout distill key data into easy-to-grasp nuggets, lending clarity to this book whose fresh take on the habits of the American economic elite will be indispensable to marketers.

About Dr. Steve Kraus
Vice president, The Harrison Group
Co-author, The New Elite:Inside the Minds of the Truly Wealty
Based on a ground-breaking series of studies, The New Elite busts the myths about wealth in America, and provides a research-driven look at the attitudes and lifestyles of the wealthiest 1% of Americans. Learn more about the book, and why Publisher’s Weekly called it “indispensable to marketers,” at www.TheNewElite.net.

Steve is also author of Psychological Foundations of Success: A Harvard-Trained Scientist Separates the Science of Success from Self-Help Snake Oil. Smithsonian Curator Virginia Mecklenburg to Speak at FIU 1/23/09

Smithsonian Curator to Speak at FIU
Frost Art Museum Presents Virginia Mecklenburg, Curator of Modern Masters from the Smithsonian American Art Museum

Virginia Mecklenburg, senior curator for the Smithsonian American Art Museum, will speak on Friday, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. at FIU’s Wertheim Performing Arts Center as the featured lecturer for the Frost Art Museum’s Steven and Dorothea Green Critics’ Lecture Series. Mecklenburg will talk about 20th century abstraction and the exhibition Modern Masters from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, on view at The Frost through March 1.

The Frost is the first stop on a national tour for Modern Masters, which features more than 30 artists who transformed American art in the years after World War II. Mecklenburg included five pieces donated to the Smithsonian by Patricia and Phillip Frost in 1986, including works by Josef Albers and Hans Hofmann. Modern Masters is the debut exhibition for the new Frost Art Museum, which opened to the public Nov. 29, 2008.

Mecklenburg is a writer and lecturer who specializes in American art. She has organized exhibitions and written on Edward Hopper, George Bellows, Earl Cunningham, Robert
Indiana, Jame Rosenquist, abstraction in the 1930s and 1940s and other 20th century artists and movements. Metropolitan Lives: The Ashcan Artists and Their New York, which she co-authored with Rebecca Zurier and Robert Snyder, won the Alfred H. Barr, Jr. Award in 1997.

In the important exhibition Modern Masters and in her lectures, Mecklenburg, chronicles the emergence of postwar abstraction, and Abstract Expressionism in particular, from the mid-1940s through its “triumph” in the late 1950s. She brings to life this pivotal period, and the world of the artists who helped defined the movement. Richard Diebenkorn and Nathan Oliveira in California; immigrants Hans Hofmann and Louise Nevelson; New Yorkers Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell, and many more explored powerful color and the nuance of line as they sought to express what it meant to live in the mid-twentieth century.

Some were friends who dropped by each other’s studios, attended each other’s openings and then retired to bars and restaurants to talk about art. Others never met, but knew of the paintings and sculptures created by their colleagues from reports in the press.
Some of the artists, among them Seymour Lipton and Theodore Roszak, probed the dark side of man’s unconscious. Sam Francis and Adolph Gottlieb explored the mysteries of space. Helen Frankenthaler and Joan Mitchell captured the color and light of the natural landscape; Romare Bearden and Larry Rivers explored meaning in family and community. Others, including Josef Albers, Ad Reinhardt and Esteban Vicente, tested the nature of human perception. They all experimented, reversed course, refined and readjusted to capture the thoughts, feelings and moods of America during the Cold War.

Her lecture is the second featured as part of The Frost’s respected Steven & Dorothea Green Critics’ Lecture Series. The museum presents four lectures each season. Contemporary film maker Robert Adanto spoke Oct. 24 about his experiences creating the provocative film The Rising Tide. On Feb. 20, Robert Storr, dean of Yale University’s School of Art, will talk about the evolution of contemporary art he has witnessed and helped to shape in his 30 years as a writer and critic. On April 3, internationally recognized visual artist Ann Hamilton will discuss her large-scale multi-media installations exploring time, space, sound and experience.

Since 1981, the Green Lecture Series has introduced an array of art world luminaries to the South Florida community, including renowned artists, museum curators, scholars and critics. The Frost has hosted such distinguished figures as Philippe de Montebello, Terry Gross, Carlos Fuentes and Michael Graves.

Present:

Art Deco in Shanghai and Miami Beach
a book reading & signing, photo presentation
by Miami Beach authors Don and Nina Worth

Thursday, January 15
6PM to 8PM

Free and open to the public

Art Deco in Shanghai and Miami Beach was published as a coffee table book by Don and Nina Worth as the culmination of a cultural exchange program between the two cities. It began in 2005 when the authors visited Shanghai and met by chance with acclaimed architect Xing Tong He of China.

The limited edition book features 100 color photographs, 50 of each city, taken by noted photographer Deke Erh, who grew up amongst the art deco buildings of Shanghai. Introductory texts were written by Tess Johnston of Shanghai and Clotilde Luce of Miami Beach. In pictorial form, the book reveals two disparate cities with surprising architectural similarities. Shanghai has the largest collection of Art Deco buildings in Asia.

The Miami Beach Author Series presents monthly book readings, discussion and author signing of recently published and classic books focusing on Miami Beach history and lifestyle.

Following four successful issues covering arts and culture in and around Los Angeles, L.A.-based ForYourArt (FYA) expands its reach this December to cover the largest U.S. contemporary art event of the year and publishes its first-ever special issue of MAP ForYourArt: Art Basel Miami Beach.

MAP ForYourArt is the insider’s guide to contemporary art and culture that documents a particular theme relevant to the cultural landscape of the time. In this issue, FYA gives readers an unparalleled, curated guide to Miami with the help of 15 contributors–from civic and cultural leaders to music moguls, from art world insiders to resident athletes–who share their favorite places that include historic examples of architecture, museum and gallery spaces, classic restaurants and trendy clubs. Compliments of Ovation TV, the only network devoted to art and culture, MAP ForYourArt: Art Basel Miami Beach is free as well as downloadable at www.foryourart.com/downloads/MAPFYA-Miami1.pdf

FYA contributors include André Balazs, Hotelier; Jose Bedia, Miami-based artist; Tory Burch, fashion designer; Bonnie Clearwater, Director & Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami; Rosa de la Cruz, Miami-based collector; Manuel Diaz, Mayor of Miami;
P. Diddy, music mogul; Liam Gillick, London and New York-based artist; John Keenen, Architect, K/R, NYC; Anna Kournikova, Professional tennis player and model; Cathy Leff, Director, Wolfsonian–Florida International University; Margi Nothard, Architect, Founding Partner and President of Glavovic Studio Inc.; Terence Riley, Director, Miami Art Museum (MAM); Craig Robins, President, Dacra Development; and Erik Spoelstra, Head Coach, Miami Heat.

MAP ForYourArt: Art Basel Miami Beach is organized by neighborhoods—South Beach, Miami Beach, Design District, Downtown, Greater Miami and Wynwood as well as by art fairs—Art Basel Miami Beach, NADA and the dozens of satellite fairs—and features detailed keys to navigate the many and varied programs and events that are taking place all over the city December 2 through December 7. MAP ForYourArt includes Plan ForYourArt, a curated list of must-see talks, discussions and openings; a feature on Miami Architecture; and a special interview with curator and Serpentine Gallery co-director Hans Ulrich Obrist asking “Is Art Important?”

In addition, the center insert of the MAP ForYourArt is a guide that serves as a quick reference to which galleries at Art Basel Miami Beach and NADA have work by some of the top artists. Select artists include Devendra Banhart, Matthew Barney, Chris Burden, Sophie Calle, Bruce Conner, Marcel Dzama, Olafur Eliasson, Gelitin, Mike Kelley, Jeff Koons, Richard Prince, Paper Rad and Chris Ware.

A new guide to some of the city’s most interesting architecture has just been published by ForYourArt, an organization started by Bettina Korek to promote civic engagement with the arts in Los Angeles.

Miami – Green Flamingos: Saturday 10/18/08

Green Flamingos is back again Saturday, October 18th from 6-9PM at Coverings, Etc Showroom Headquarters (New location: 7610 NE 4th Court Miami, FL 33138) in Miami’s Little River Industrial District. In its second year, Green Flamingos informal business networking forum serves as an educational opportunity focused on the latest green designs, services, products, and technologies. Six speakers will come prepared with Power Point presentations to educate 100+ people—builders, developers, architects, designers, home owners alike—for no more then 8 minutes each. The idea is to present as much interesting green and varied information as possible.
The evening begins with Gabriela Sanchez-Vegas of Concreative4 whose feminine touch to engineering, design, and concrete creates one of kind pieces of art. Gabriela traveled to San Francisco to study with renowned Concrete Master Fu-Tung Cheng and will share learned secret concrete techniques. Next, architect turned furniture designer Bannavis Andrew Sribyatta will share his PIE! PIE stands for his furniture line Project Import Export which explores the
ultimate concept of Living Space in relation to the complexity of nature. John Panchookian of Eco Toilet Kit will follow with his innovative solution to reduce water consumption, no need to replace existing toilets, and reduce utility bills at the same time. Then Amy Creekmur of TREEmendous will explain how her non-profit organization’s tree planting efforts make Miami-Dade County a greener, cooler, healthier and more enjoyable environment. Bamboo Master, Barry McCarthy of Bamboobarry will follow with the countless innovative bamboo—a rapidly renewable material—solutions for furniture, fencing, sculpture, and bridges. Some varieties grow six feet in one day! Roz Gatewood of Destiny will conclude the evening with a video presentation. Destiny is America’s first Eco-Sustainable City located in Central Florida’s heartland.
Special Green Notes
The Coverings, Etc Showroom Headquarters is a USGBC LEED register project.
The trees provided by TREEmendous for the evening’s raffle will be used to off-set a part of the carbon produced to host the event.
Car pooling and public transportation is always encouraged.
Green Gables Café mother Ana Rabel and daughter Laura Alfonso team will be serving food that is fresh, environmentally responsible, local/community oriented, and most importantly homemade.
