Photographs of a Dance Performance at The Cando Arts Coop on 4/11/10

A dance presentation inspired by the space and work of the CANDO Arts Co-op on Sunday, April 11, 2010.  It’s Happening… was a collage of experiences and interpretations, reflecting on the work of Miami artists: Deborah Weed, Dena & Stewart Stewart, Lucinda Linderman, Paula Turk, AnneFaye Poole, and James Broderick. 7 young international and local choreographers, all students and alumni of the New World School of the Arts dance program, came together to create a physical second look at art. They explore the textures, perceptions of, and reactions to the ideas and images presented at the CANDO Arts Co-op. For the better gallery, click here.

It’s Happening at CANDO Arts Co-op 4/11/10

It’s HAPPENING
April 11th from 4:30 – 6:30 pm
A FREE dance presentation inspired by the space and work of the
CANDO Arts Co-op
309 23rd Street
Miami Beach, FL
One block west of Collins Ave.
It’s Happening… is a collage of experiences and interpretations, reflecting on the work of Miami artists: Deborah Weed, Dena & Stewart Stewart, Lucinda Linderman, Paula Turk, AnneFaye Poole, and James Broderick. 7 young international and local choreographers, all students and alumni of the New World School of the Arts dance program, come together to create a physical second look at art. They explore the textures, perceptions of, and reactions to the ideas and images presented at the CANDO Arts Co-op. It is never enough to look at a picture or space without putting some thought into how it makes you react. Within each illustration or sculpture there is an energy, a history, and a reason. Whether we choose to acknowledge it or not, there is a lot more happening right before our eyes than we realize. And this is what we search for and try to translate for ourselves, that which is happening when we look at the world through the eyes and hands of another human being. In this intimate setting, the audience will experience the world created by the gallery’s work alongside the performers themselves. Both performer and patron will be challenged to react and adapt to what has been and is being created. Visual art, dance, literature, and music will all lend a hand in creating this experience, stimulating questions and conversations that will hopefully prompt new perspectives on how art can affect the response of individuals and communities.

Choreographers:
Andrea Ollarvide, Kristen Carcone, Liony Garcia, Sarah Matry-Guerre, Kristin Whiting, Kaitlyn Bishop, and Matthew Bailey

Special thanks to The Dade Community Foundation, Collins Park Neighborhood Association, MiamiArtZine .com, as well as Miami Dance Futures without whom this performance would not be possible. For more information call 786-366-9826.

Miami City Ballet Presents Program IV at Adrienne Arsht Center 4/9-11/10

Choreography by Robbins
Music by Chopin
Dances at a Gathering premiered in 1969 with New York City Ballet. It is a work for ten dancers set to piano pieces by Chopin. Robbins began choreographing the ballet as a pas de deux for Edward Villella and Patricia McBride but was so inspired by the music that he continued to expand the piece. He ended with eighteen pieces in all and with five female dancers and five male dancers set apart by the colors of their costumes. Although the ballet has no specific plot, the tone of the piece is uplifting and is tinged with Slavic feeling reminiscent of mazurkas and waltzes.

Tigertail presents dance from Barcelona 4/9-10/10

Gripping, physically intense and genuinely lyrical, this award-winning extended evening-length duet Ölelés for two men marks the first collaboration between acclaimed Catalán choreographers and performers Jordi Cortés and Damián Muñoz – two of Spain’s most innovative young dance artists. Based on writer Sándor Márai’s 1942 masterpiece Embers, this high-velocity, nearly violent piece dramatizes the bitter reunion of two long-estranged friends, who look back to the fateful betrayal that shattered their bond 40 years earlier. Ölelés has received the Ciudad de Barcelona Award and the Premio de la Feria Internacional de Huesca.

Cortés has performed with DV8 Physical Theatre in London, among others and Muñoz, who formed his own company in 1995 and is dubbed the Almodóvar of dance in Spain. This simmering physical theatre work is guaranteed to draw the audience through an intense and furious male bonding.

Choreography by Villella
As his life unfolds, a man strives to master the complexities of the human Dance of Life. When we first encounter him, he is a gifted, 17 year old aspiring Poet. We follow the Poet through the stages of his life, with its ever-changing rhythms, until he reaches his sixties – a time when he must look back and reflect upon the life he has made for himself.

At each stage of his life, while confronting some very human temptations, the Poet must choose: between love and sexual desire, intoxication and lucidity, and his art and material success. Following in the long, romanticized tradition of artists and their self-destructive attraction to alcohol and drugs, the Poet, seduced by both throughout his life, loses the muse of his art and the possibility of genuine love. The Poet’s destiny and own Dance of Life are set in motion in the Prologue, when we hear the French poet Charles Baudelaire’s exhortation about life: “One must be intoxicated always … With wine, poetry, or with virtue, your choice. But intoxicate yourself.” In the end, it is the Poet’s character, as manifested by a lifetime’s accumulation of choices, that determines his destiny.

Set in a neighborhood ballroom in New York, the ballet begins in the late Belle Epoque with the Boston Waltz and continues through the Jazz Age with the Quick Step, Charleston, Castle Walk and Maxixe, the 1940s war years with their Fox Trot and Lindy Hop and the 1950s with its Mambo.

Ros Warby’s Monumental Dance at the Arsht Center 4/24-25/09

roswarby_4x9_lr1

Tickets and more info

MONUMENTAL is Ros Warby’s latest award-winning solo dance work, developed in collaboration with her long standing artistic team, designer Margie Medlin and composer Helen Mountfort. MONUMENTAL is a richly layered movement piece, continuing to refine Warby’s integration of the solo dance form with 35mm film projection and solo cello. It draws from the iconic symbols of classical ballet, the swan and the soldier, bringing focus to our own sense of strength and dissolution, amidst the often irreconcilable tragedies and the sustaining power of beauty in the world today. The audience is invited to engage, through the solo dancer, with the innocent bird, and the brave, sometimes tainted soldier embedded within us all.
MONUMENTAL, received the Age Critics Commendation Award, the Robert Helpmann Award for Best Female Dancer, the Greenroom Award for Best Female Performer and the Greenroom Award for Best Composition. It also received Greenroom nominations for Best design, Best Choreography and Original Concept and Realisation, and a Helpmann nomination for Best New Dance Work.
