“Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting”. J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

MANO Fine Art is proud to present Faded Memory: A Tribute to Operation Pedro Pan with works by Humberto Calzada, MANO and Victoria Montoro Zamorano.

Faded Memory is an artistic tribute to Operation Pedro Pan, the 14,000 + Cuban children who were sent to the United States to avoid Castro’s political mandate, the parents who sacrificed and the many that made it possible
. Without question, their story is one of strength, courage and inspiration.

The artists in Faded Memory point to new bodies of work that reflect the myriad of sentiments tied to the heart-wrenching experience of Operation Pedro Pan. MANO’s poignant black and white canvases of children at an airport provoke a sense of lost childhood while Montoro-Zamorano’s brilliant photos of Cuba give way to memories of home and Calzada’s “Havana in Progress” prompts us to the reality of Cuba today.

Collectively, the exhibit beautifully restores a sense of hope and belonging and reminds the viewer that going away does not mean forgetting.

October 23, 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of the last Pedro Pan flight.

About the Pedro Pan Exodus:
Operation Pedro Pan was a program created in response to the thousands of parents in Cuba who feared for their children’s future under Castro. The program provided an opportunity to send Cuban children to the United States (primarily Miami) and avoid political indoctrination and forced encampment. Between 1960 and 1962 over 14,000 children left Cuba alone, most were between the ages of ten and sixteen but some were as young as four years old. October 23, 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of the last Pedro Pan flight. To date Operation Pedro Pan remains the largest exodus of unaccompanied children in the Western Hemisphere.

Something Special, a Pernod Ricard brand and one of the world’s most exclusive Scotch whiskeys famed for its diamond-shaped bottle, is celebrating ten years of collaboration with some of Latin America’s most talented artists, with the return of its famed “Enbotellarte” international art competition. The artwork for “Enbotellarte’s” 2012 international art competition will be showcased in the exclusive Miami exhibit, and will also include the special participation of this year’s talented winners.

Artists residing in South Florida and six countries in Latin America including: Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Guatemala, were invited to submit their entries.

Join us December 1st at Group-X-Fit as we showcase local photographer James Woodley.

London born James Woodley moved to Miami in 2009. He found his new challenge in photography with a new skyline and available natural lighting, the subject matter and backdrop to produce images that matched as close as possible to his imagination.

in the fast pace of Miami he realized his passion was freezing motion & action with a camera, to capture things that happen in the blink of an eye. Moments that happen too quickly too see, yet are too important to miss.

He also developed a fascination with people in his street photography. The ability to immortalize someone in an image is a powerful one, but to capture them when they’re not aware they are being seen. When they are natural, their pose and expression unaffected by the camera and its ability to heighten the feeling of self-consciousness.

The aim of his work is to show us the beauty in what we usually fail to see as the world rushes by us.

Miguel Paredes, Miami based pop artist and New York native, will be exhibiting a new series of art with fellow artist, long time friend and mentor, Ronnie Cutrone. Paredes and Cutrone have spent the past months working together on this collaboration in Cutrone’s private studio located just outside New York City in time to debut through several events taking place during Art Basel Miami 2012.

The collaborative collection includes 5 paintings where Paredes has incorporated his style on Cutrone’s animated pieces of famed characters like Woody the Woodpecker and Felix the Cat. The two have also joined forces to re-imagine Cutrone’s most prized series of works the “Supermodels Suite” by combining different styles such as Street, Pop, and Anime. The series was created in 1997 and features top models from the era such as Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Elle McPherson and Claudia Schiffer and will be on display in Miguel Paredes Gallery during Art Basel, priced at $10,000 and up.

In addition to the collaborative pieces with Cutrone and his own original collection “Culture In A Bag”, Paredes will also showcase various works from Gruce Lurie Gallery and LAB ART Gallery, the largest art gallery in the nation dedicated to street art. Artwork by eight of LAB ART’s artists including Alec Monopoly, AJL, Louis XXX, Thank You X, Benjamin Alejandro, Mar, Gregory Siff and Skylar Grey.

Following the gallery event, guests, fans and collectors are invited to an after-party reception to be held at Riccochet Lounge in Midtown.

Contradance is a style of American, partnered folk dancing that originated in New England and is now found around the world. At most dances, a live band plays traditional songs and a caller leads participants through the dances. There’s no need to bring a partner as most folks come singly but couples and families are welcome. Contradance is easy to learn, there’s instruction about 30 minutes before every dance, it’s flirtatious, high-paced, energetic and active – come ready to get a workout. Most folks will be a little confused at first but they learn quickly and have fun from the beginning.

Music at this dance is by a great Contradance band Southern Atlantic Muse.

Tonight we are presenting three musicians from Miami and New York performing on guitars, bass and electronics. Federico Bonacossa’s curiosity about the current guitar lead him to create a national call for works. Out of 100 submissions, Bonacossa selected 4 finalists. Kyong Mee Choi’s It only needs to be seen (one of the selected pieces that is presented tonight) was inspired by the Steve Hagen’s saying, “Truth does not need any explanation. It only needs to be seen. The only way we can be free in each moment is to become what the moment is.” Choi wants the  audience to experience being in the moment through the stream of sound that does not need any explanation but only needs to be heard. Bonacossa’s Sequitur VIII will feature a canonic layering of real-time audio processing in MAX/MSP. The Miami-based up-and-coming bassist and composer Kyle Motle will join Bonacossa in Tragos for double bass and live electronics that explores scratch tones and open strings. Bryan Jacobs’s Trigger will investigate the idea of presets in music. In fact, there are as many triggered presets as there are notes in this work! Compact Scecenes will feature Jacobs on guitar while operating fixed and live electronics. “This piece has a little to do with Milli Vanilli mouthing the words and a little to do with extending the acoustic tradition.”BJ

Three Dog Night to Bring “Joy to the World” at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek 1/5/13

Three Dog Night to Bring “Joy to the World” at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek
Saturday, 01/05/2013, 08:00 pm –
3dogASeminole Casino Coconut Creek
5550 NW 40th Street,
Coconut Creek, Florida 33073
Webpage Link

Three Dog Night, one of the most successful American bands of the ‘60s and ‘70s, will bring “joy to the world” on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 8 p.m. at The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek.

Founding members and vocalists Cory Wells and Danny Hutton, original keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon and guitarist Michael Allsup, as well as bassist Paul Kingery and drummer Pat Bautz will perform their beloved hits, plus some amazing new songs, sure to be enjoyed by South Florida Fans of all ages.

With their distinctive and sometimes extraordinary harmonic blend, the group became a sensation and their hits appeared on best-selling charts in multiple genres, including pop, rock and country. Boasting chart and sales records that are virtually unmatched in popular music, Three Dog Night had an impressive 21 consecutive Billboard Top 40 hits, including three number one singles, “Mama Told Me (Not to Come),” which was also a Top 10 hit in the United Kingdom, “Joy to the World,” and “Black and White.” Coincidentally, each one featured a different lead singer.

Three Dog Nights’ version of John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s ‘’It’s For You’’ typified the band at their best, but it was their original arrangements of the work of lesser-known writers that brought welcome exposure and considerable royalties to fresh talent. The group recorded the music of the best new songwriters of their time, including Harry Nilsson (“One”), Randy Newman (“Mama Told Me (Not to Come)”), Elton John (“Lady Samantha” and “Your Song”), Laura Nyro (“Eli’s Coming”), Paul Williams (“An Old Fashioned Love Song”) and Hoyt Axton (“Joy to the World”) among many others. The band was noted for its creative arrangements and interpretations, and their cover choices gave exposure to several of these talented songwriters.

As they mark more than 40 years of extraordinary music and touring on the road, Three Dog Nights’ records continue to sell around the world, reaching beyond the borders of the U.S. into Japan, Canada, Holland, England, Germany, Spain and more.

Tickets start at $40* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may apply

Garden Your Mind

To explain my work I first have to explain what confusion means to me. I see confusion as the amount of time our mind spends on being undecided between infinite choices in an uncertain moment! I see my artistic journey as “Confusion Study”. Most of my work is derived from that inspiration and desire to study the transitory moment between uncertainty and knowledge. For the past 4 years I have been exploring shapes and textures through photography applying digitally only a mirror image technique. They provide me with an accessible tool to communicate with and explore the mind.

So far, my “Confusion Study” has had three different approaches, resulting into three different photographical “series” or “collections”; titled as following: “Roof Less”, “Garden” and “Metropolis”.

The “Garden” Series is a collection of natural subjects transformed into abstract subjects. The mind, if taken care of as one would care for their garden, can reach infinity, for a garden is forever in growth (if unobstructed). These photographical creations are meant to promote a new mindset: “To Garden Your Mind”, a mindset of awareness development and infinite perceptions!

In the “Metropolis” and “Roof Less” Series I use designs formed through architectural textures in order to present a different way to perceive city-like structures. The inspiration usually comes from shapes, colors and materials. Just as in “Garden”, these two series reflect a mindset of cultivating a different way to receive information.

The Art Place Wynwood, presents Visual Dialogue, a showcase of 12 artists during ART BASEL WEEK 2012. Exhibitions runs from December 1 – 17th, 2012. The gallery is hosting an Opening Reception on Wednesday, December 5th, 6-9 PM.

Director, Danilo Gonzalez, has this to say about “Visual Dialogue”.

“When I arrived in the Wynwood Art District four years ago the future of Wynwood was far from certain. Today, we see that the Art District is at a crucial point in its development process. My position as both an artist and a gallery director has provided me an unique perspective on these changes. I have witnessed the area transform itself into the interesting and stylish community that it is today. This has given me the opportunity to work with international artists such as Sara Roitman, the impressive photographer from Ecuador; Ada Balcacer, Eliu Almonte and Grimaldy Polanco from the Dominican Republic; extraordinary German expressionist Horst Kohem; and established artist, Delia Solari from Argentina.

Wynwood has attracted Florida talents too, including sculptor, Deborah Gregg, environmentally conscious painter, Molly Bo, painter and spacial designer Debra Yates, abstract painter, Lauren Fogg and prominent artist, Carol Fryd. It is obvious that the Wynwood Art District has become a meeting point in the global art community for artists and art appreciators alike. I am proud to present “Visual Dialogues,” an exhibition whose objective is to expose the interconnection between different generations and the perspective of each artist that are connected yet different.

Together we are carving a space in the art world for the future of Wynwood.”

On November 9th, The InterContinental at Doral Miami is hosting its November Kickoff Cocktail featuring local sculptor, William Calvo, as part of its 2012 Artist Series. This month’s event will have an international flavor.
This month’s artist, William Calvo, is a Colombian-born sculptor whose work reflects a sense of strain by incorporating two contrasting aspects simultaneously: silence and the will to speak. His sculptures also reflect how human beings must struggle to comprehend, digest, and react to devastating violence like events that have clawed and ripped their way across Colombia, his homeland, over the past few decades.
This year was an important year in the trade and international arena between South Florida and Colombia, as the Free-Trade Agreement went into effect and Colombia is already South Florida’s #3 trade partner. This month’s Artist Series event will reflect how trade between countries is not just about hard goods, but human capital as well. Influential Colombians in the community will be recognized and the featured artist will present a sculpture to the Consul General of Colombia at the event as well.

It’s about that time again:

Let’s face it, most of us can’t hang with the De La Cruz’s and Rubells of the world. We’re resigned to putting up our kids’ work on the fridge or buying some not-horrible mass produced Target art to decorate our homes.

NO MORE!!

Come out to Yo Space and aside from having a good time playing ping pong on our custom table, smoking hookah, and/or hobnobbing, check out some great works by local artists.

We’ll have a fresh batch of artists in the house along with our Resident Artists, selling everything from original works, to limited edition prints, and merchandise (Apparel, accessories, and more). The best part? We’re capping the selling price at $250 per item. You can walk away with an original piece of art to brighten up your place or to offer as an amazing unique gift for less than the price of an iPod.
(Disclaimer: Resident Artists may have more expensive work in their studios)

Orchestra Miami is pleased to continue its series of Free Family Concerts designed to introduce young children to classical music. Tough Turkey in the Big City: A Thanksgiving Odyssey, by Bruce Adolphe and Louise Gikow, will be a treat for the whole family! Perfect for the attention spans of our young audience, this fun and engaging program will last approximately 45 minutes.

What happens when a turkey from the sticks meets a Park Avenue pigeon? With the feel of an old-time radio story, Tough Turkey in the Big City follows the comic blunders of Tom Turkey, who leaves the farm to try his luck in the big city. The story, related to the audience by a narrator, illustrates a close call with a menacing chef, a tussle at the “Turkey Club”, a brief romance with a pigeon, and a happy mix up at the Thanksgiving Day Parade. It’s a big-hearted story of a plucky bird on an unexpected journey. Tom is portrayed by the bass trombone and his barnyard friends by the violin and clarinet. The music of the farm is a swinging barnyard counterpoint, while the music of the city recalls the smoky jazz of film noire. There’s also some fun march music at the parade, and hot Latin rhythms at the Turkey Club.

• Friday, November 16- 7:00 PM at the Miami Shores Presbyterian Church, 602 NE 96 Street, Miami Shores, FL 33138
• Saturday, November 17- 1:30 PM at the North Dade Regional Library, 2455 NW 183 Street, Miami, FL 33056

Performances are sponsored in part by the Miami-Dade Public Library System. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, children are asked to bring canned goods, to be donated to local food banks.

Celebrating its Sixth Anniversary, Orchestra Miami’s mission is to bring world-class quality symphonic music to all South Floridians. For more information, please go to our website at www.OrchestraMiami.org or call (305) 274-2103.

As the eyes of the art world descend upon Miami just days before Art Basel 2012, a special art opening and wine tasting event will take place at Wine by the Bay in Downtown Miami. “Transitions” examines the connections between organic and construction through the works of three artists: Miami-based, Japanese-Argentinian artist Valeria Yamamoto; Colombian sculptor Claudia Hakim; and Iraqi-German painter Fahar. A similar connection can be derived from the terroir of the California landscape where wines reflect the personality of the state while drawing inspiration from afar.

The evening is the ideal opportunity for connoisseurs of both wine and art to converge and interact. Discover the complexities of some of California’s best wines through the expert guidance of Wine by the Bay owner/gallerist Stefano Campanini and his knowledgeable staff. Special guests, Mara Sartore and Matteo Bartoli co-founders and editors of My Art Guides will enlighten guests about the art presented and their experiences working at the most notable art fairs in the world: Venice Biennale, Art Basel Switzerland, Art Basel Miami Beach, and organizing international events such as The Dali Universe, Edge of Arabia, and Circuito Off (Italy’s most important video festival.)

The Opening Reception/Wine Tasting Event takes place on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. The Media and Community are welcome at this free event, but RSVP is required to info@winebtb.com or 305.455.9791 – space is limited. October 22, 2012—Miami Dade College will screen a new documentary film “Up to Us” at the Wolfson
Campus on November 5 at 6 pm.

The 20-minute film, which was shot this summer in New York, Atlanta and at both the Democratic
and Republican Conventions, follows two young Americans — Atlanta native Kyle Murphy, 23, who
served as an AmeriCorps member at Habitat for Humanity, and Brandon West, 27 a Masters in Public
Administration graduate, who is underemployed (for 18 months), but is seeking work in a public service
field.

The film specifically highlights the www.onemillionnewjobs.org campaign as a viable pathway toward
increasing economic mobility, while it makes the case for voting as a means of supporting the measure.

“Up to Us” was produced with support from Own the Vote (www.ownthevote.us) an initiative from
Comcast and NBC Universal that aims to engage and educate young voters about the political process.
Own the Vote has partnered with ElectNext, Rock the Vote and the National Constitution Center to help
create awareness about and encourage voter registration and voter participation.

Renowned photographer David Evans shares, “My favorite stories to tell with photos and video are those of underserved indigenous people in developing countries–especially women–newly empowered to shape their own destinies. It is one thing to document a story when progress has been achieved and listen to people talk about what it was like before. It is another to document the time when a person or group first realizes that opportunity is actually within their reach, and hear about their dreams of what they will achieve in the future, starting now. Those first steps towards a more self-determined life are beautiful to me. This portfolio highlights a group of traditional silk weavers in central Madagascar, who are just gaining access to sustainable, international, fair-trade markets. The impact of this new income is immediate and generational.”

A Portion of Each Sale Goes to the Federation Sahalandy Reforestation Project
Wild silkworm cocoons for the SAHALANDY weavings are harvested from native Tapia forests. The sustainability of these forests is vital to the Silkies’ livelihood and to the preservation of the cultural heritage of their silk weaving. But the trees have been decimated for firewood and charcoal, leaving the country 80% deforested. A portion of the sales from SAHALANDY products go towards the replanting of the Tapia forests and efforts to educate their community about alternative cooking methods. A scarf will be included with the purchase of a photograph.

Encapsulating the spirit of Miami, this exhibit represents a microcosm of the variety of art presented to us at the peak of art season. From the hollow, metal squares that Rainer Lagemann (Germany) uses to sculpt the human form – a framework of the spirit and image of the body; the “resurrection of color” that restores emotional drama to abstraction found in Christian Awe’s (Berlin) paintings; landscapes by Douglass Freed (US) who names his paintings “structures” where shapes are fitted together to create a coherent whole; works of internationally renowned American artist Hunt Slonem who experiments with a unique method of cross-hatching to texturize his works; and Colombian artist Mario Velez, a minimalist artist who has been greatly inspired by the Bauhaus approach to design. This group show is a schema of all that the city has to offer in its unique, cultural diversity.

Just in time for the holidays, one of America’s most endearing and enduring stars, Tony Orlando, is coming to town! The star will dazzle South Florida with his “Great American Christmas Show” at The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Saturday, December 22 at 8 p.m. The festive show is a classic filled with the joy and music of the season along with some of his greatest hits that has been running for 19 years in both Las Vegas and Orlando’s hometown of Branson, Missouri.

Orlando has a unique ability to move and excite an audience unlike any other, and became a teenage idol at the age of 16 with his first hit, “Halfway to Paradise” in 1961. Soon after he became a music publisher for Clive Davis at April-Blackwood Music, where he signed popular songwriters such as James Taylor. His career continued to expand when he lent his voice to a demo record for the song titled “Candida” that became wildly popular and climbed the charts all the way to number one.

Following this success, he recorded the mega sensation “Knock Three Times” which not only became number one, but was the top song of 1971 selling over six million copies worldwide, and was featured in the hit movie Now and Then. Three additional number one hits soon followed, “Tie A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round The Ole Oak Tree,” “My Sweet Gypsy Rose” and “He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You).”

Deciding to jump full force into what was already a meteoric rise to the top, Orlando released a string of even more successful songs, including “Who’s in the Strawberry Patch with Sally,” “Cupid,” “Steppin’ Out-I’m Gonna Boogie Tonight” and “Mornin’ Beautiful.” To date, he has sold millions of records across the globe and remains one of America’s most beloved personalities.

Over the years, he has been a recipient of three American Music Awards, a People’s Choice Award and was one of the first entertainers to be featured as a subject of VH1’s Behind the Music in 1998. He was also awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1990 for his outstanding achievements in the entertainment industry.

Tickets start at $20* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may apply

Don your pancho and grab some amigos because it’s time for some good ol’ fashioned bingo!

Yo Miami’s bringing you the same game you remember playing as a kid, only now you win free booze and tacos instead of those crappy plastic dinosaurs. Our host, Casa de HaHa’s Daniel Reskin, will keep you on the edge of your seat (or falling out of it) while he calls out the numbers and entertains you with his antics in between games.

Prizes are going to include everything from free drink tickets, to tacos, to t-shirts and more! And make sure you get there in time for the last game which’ll be filling out a full card instead of just 1 row and the prize will be a package including a $25 bar tab! (Oh yea, did we mention the 1/2 price drinks from 5-8pm?)

So come out, get your senior citizen on, and learn why the old folks do it right.

As a special treat we have the artist GG painting one of the picnic tables outside! He’s going to be starting earlier on and finishing up during Bingo. He’s also offering up one of his “Fado” character tshirts as one of the prizes.

About Luke…

I’m a Miami based Photographer working in Fashion, Beauty, Lifestyle and Events. I’m always looking to collaborate with creative artists and talent. Currently I’m rebuilding my Fashion & Beauty portfolio with agency models and have available slots for select TF work

http://www.lv-images.com/

About Amalia…

Amália Leandro’s paintings have been shown in Miami Beach at “Art for Life” at Halo, “Art for a cause gallery” 2007, Tangerine restaurant, Crobar Miami during Art Basel 2004, and her paintings were on display at Blue from 2004-2009. She was born in Toronto, Canada to Portuguese parents, and after many travels she has made Miami her home base for the past 12 years.
In 2004, her passion for painting took her to the Art Center on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, where she studied briefly with Pablo Contrisciani. It was there that she created the basis of her “Blue” series.
Amália is also a DJ/songwriter/spoken word artist, spinning DJ sets that range from a small lounge, corporate event, private party, mega club or after hours. Amália was featured in the Ocean Drive Magazine October 2004, Beach Patrol section, as one of “The people who make Miami”. She was also on the cover of The Miami New Times, May 6-12 2004, where she appears as one of Miami’s tech-house djs. A “renaissance gal”, as quoted in Ocean Drive Magazine.
Her art work is inspired by her love of House Music, dancing, and living in Miami Beach. “Art is an expression of what you see, or what you feel. It doesn’t have to mean anything. It just is.”- Amália Leandro

Orchestra Miami to present the Florida premiere of Kurt Vonnegut’s
“An American Soldier’s Tale”
In celebration of iconic American author Kurt Vonnegut’s 90th birthday, Orchestra Miami will present the Florida premiere of “An American Soldier’s Tale”, with music by Igor Stravinsky and new libretto by Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut’s gripping libretto replaces the traditional story by
C. F. Ramuz with the true story of private Eddie D. Slovick, who in 1945 became the only U.S. soldier to be executed for desertion since the Civil War.

Commissioned in 1993 by New York Philomusica, this edgy and provocative piece was not heard again until 2006, after a legal fight with the Stravinsky estate. Rarely performed since the 2006 New York revival, Orchestra Miami has obtained exclusive rights from the Vonnegut Estate to perform this important work on the occasion of what would have been Mr. Vonnegut’s 90th birthday.

Seven musicians from Orchestra Miami will perform the original Stravinsky score, conducted by Elaine Rinaldi. Directed by renowned Miamian Michael Yawney, the play will feature Ivan Lopez, Kristoff Skalet, Francesca Toledo and Matthew Glass.

The performances will be on Saturday, November 10 at 8:00 at PAX (Performing Arts Exchange), located at 337 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33130 and Sunday, November 11 at 7:00 PM at the Pinecrest Gardens’ Banyan Bowl, located at 11100 SW 57 Avenue, Pinecrest, FL 33156. Tickets to the PAX performance are $25 and tickets to the performance at Pinecrest Gardens are $25 and $30. Tickets can be purchased online at www.orchestramiami.org or by calling 800-838-3006. $10 student rush tickets will be available at the door for students with valid ID.

Please join us on October 26th at 1310 Gallery for a Vaudeville Exploration of Gender & Sexuality featuring local artists; Lisa Rockford, Samantha Nye and Tabatha Mudra. The voix de ville will commence at 7pm; a collective yet mixed representation of the artists’ ongoing fascination with gender and sexuality.

The sheer abundance, variety, and spectacle of this event will stimulate the senses with ‘flash mob’ performances by the gender bending troupe Drag it Out and circus-like sideshows featuring gender-queer pumpkin carving and “fingerstache” stations. This conceptual creation will transform gallery goers from their traditional roles as passive spectators to consumers of experience, interaction and sensation. Drag It Out, a local non-profit is sponsoring this event and will be announcing the launch of their new website, programs, and opportunities to get involved!

Founder of Hani’s Mediterranean Organics Will Share Gourmet Secrets to Raise Funds for Food Justice Youth Programming

Youth L.E.A.D. Miami, a local nonprofit educating and empowering young people to adopt healthy, sustainable behaviors, today announced plans for a fundraising cooking class taught by celebrity chef Hani Khouri. A local goat herder and organic food producer, Hani supplies delicious organic hummus, baba ghanouj, tabbouleh and cheeses to many of Miami’s finest restaurants, including Michael’s Genuine, Meat Market and Escopazzo. All class proceeds will benefit Youth L.E.A.D.’s programming, which educates and empowers youth activists to address food and environmental justice issues in underserved communities.

Who: Celebrity chef, local goat farmer and Lebanese caterer, Hani Khouri of Hani’s Mediterranean Organics

What: Mediterranean cooking class and lunch buffet fundraiser

When: Saturday, November 10, 2012, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Where: Coral Gables Congregational Church, 3010 deSoto Blvd (Across from the Biltmore)

Why: All proceeds benefit Youth L.E.A.D.’s after-school and youth employment programs, which teach young people to adopt healthy, sustainable behaviors and advocate for food and environmental justice in their schools and communities

Cost: $75 per person; discounts available for groups of four or more

How: Visit www.supportyouthlead.com or call to 1-786-529-LEAD (5323) to register. Interested parties are urged to act fast – Hani Khouri’s January 2012 “Outstanding in the Field” dinner for 100 guests sold out completely, and this event will be limited to 30 attendees.

Erin Healy, Founder and CEO of Youth L.E.A.D. says, “We’re grateful for Hani Khouri’s generosity in lending his time and expertise to raise funds for food justice. We at Youth L.E.A.D. believe that access to healthy food and green spaces is everyone’s right, and should not be limited by income, neighborhood, race or class.”

At the lunchtime fundraiser, Hani will teach attendees to prepare three delicious Mediterranean dishes. Originally from Lebanon, Hani is a multilingual MBA who started businesses in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Jordan before moving to the Sunshine State. Upon arriving in South Florida, he purchased a few goats from a friend, and a business was born. He now produces food from a sizable family of organic, free-range, grass-fed Nubian goats. His firm, Hani’s Mediterranean Organics, sells healthy, organic prepared foods such as hummus and baba ganoush; goat, feta and halloumi cheeses; and goat milk ice cream in tropical fruit flavors. In addition to providing his foods to local restaurants, Khouri also sells his delicacies directly to customers at local farmers’ markets and via Redland Organics’ CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program. His operation is animal welfare-certified, and he is a member of the Chefs Collaborative and Slow Food USA.

Whole Foods Market Coral Gables is donating ingredients for the class, and Hani’s Mediterranean Organics is donating goat cheese for the dessert recipe. All attendees will receive a free Youth L.E.A.D. recipe and resource book.

It’s about that time again:

Let’s face it, most of us can’t hang with the De La Cruz’s and Rubells of the world. We’re resigned to putting up our kids’ work on the fridge or buying some not-horrible mass produced Target art to decorate our homes.

NO MORE!!

We’ll have a fresh batch of artists in the house along with our Resident Artists, selling everything from original works, to limited edition prints, and merchandise (Apparel, accessories, and more). The best part? We’re capping the selling price at $250 per item. The Living Earth Show is excited to present the east coast premiere of Luciano Chessa’s “Squeeze! Squeeze! Squeeze!” an hour-long theatrical post-minimalist composition based upon the oft-overlooked 94th chapter of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick.  Written for The Living Earth Show in 2012, the piece features custom-designed quartertone instruments (a vibraphone and a guitar) to present a warped hour-long etude, interspersed with theatrical staging and textural, performance-based “interruptions.”  “Squeeze! Squeeze! Squeeze!” explores the distorted soundscapes of Pink Floyd and The Jesus and Mary Chain, the physical and mental endurance of Michael Gordon’s “Timber,” the seemingly indeterminate theatrical events of John Cage’s “Happenings,” and the meditations on the relationships between art and sexuality found in the works Julius Eastman.

Guitarist Travis Andrews and percussionist Andrew Meyerson are The Living Earth Show, a San Francisco-based classical duo, presenting dynamic performances of amplified, electro-acoustic contemporary chamber music.  The Living Earth Show’s upcoming season includes performances of works written for the group by such composers as Samuel Carl Adams, Timo Andres, Adrian Knight, Luciano Chessa, Dan Becker, Chris Cerrone, Nick Vasallo, Andy Akiho, Ken Ueno, Jon Russell, and Damon Waitkus. The season will also feature the United States premiere of Brian Ferneyhough’s Renvoi/Shards, composed in 2008 for quartertone vibraphone and quartertone electric guitar.

The Best Years of Our Lives –
The story concentrates on the social re-adjustment of three World War II servicemen, each from a different station of society. Al Stephenson returns to an influential banking position, but finds it hard to reconcile his loyalties to ex-servicemen with new commercial realities. Fred Derry is an ordinary working man who finds it difficult to hold down a job or pick up the threads of his marriage. Having had both hands burnt off during the war, Homer Parrish is unsure that his fiancée’s feelings are still those of love and not those of pity. Each of the veterans faces a crisis upon his arrival, and each crisis is a microcosm of the experiences of many American warriors who found an alien world awaiting them when they came marching home. (Drama/Romance/War)

Iron Weed –
Albany, New York, Halloween, 1938. Francis Phelan and Helen Archer are bums, back in their birth city. She was a singer on the radio, he a major league pitcher. Death surrounds them: she’s sick, a pal has cancer, he digs graves at the cemetery and visits the grave of his infant son whom he dropped; visions of his past haunt him, including ghosts of two men he killed. That night, out drinking, Helen tries to sing at a bar. Next day, Fran visits his wife and children and meets a grandson. He could stay, but decides it’s not for him. Helen gets their things out of storage and finds a hotel. Amidst their mistakes and dereliction, the film explores their code of fairness and loyalty. (Drama)

CHOPS is a documentary about a high school jazz ensemble in Jacksonville, Florida that is accepted to compete in the Essentially Ellington Festival at Lincoln Center in New York City against other top-tier high school jazz ensembles. The film interviews individual musicians about their love of their instruments and the music itself, and shows the ensemble as they face the challenges inherent in learning and practicing music as difficult as that composed by Duke Ellington. After the hours of practice, they arrive in New York City and meet Wynton Marsalis, who helped launch (and is one of the judges in) the Essentially Ellington Festival. (Documentary/Music)

Yentl –
Dramatization of “Yentl, the Yeshiva Boy,” by Isaac Bashevis Singer (1902-1991); originally published in Yiddish c. 1960, then in English c. 1983. The story: In an Ashkenazic shtetl in Poland, Yentl Mendel is the boyishly klutzy daughter and only child of long widowed Rebbe (“Talmud Teacher”) Mendel, who teaches Talmud (a codification of Jewish Law) to local boys – and to Yentl, but secretly because girls were not allowed to learn the law in those days. When her father dies, Yentl is all alone in the world. She takes the momentous decision to leave the village and – disguised as a boy and calling herself by the name of her late brother, Anshel – seeks and gets admitted to a Yeshiva, to study the texts, traditions, subtleties and complexities of Torah, Talmud, etc. She befriends Avigdor who is engaged to Haddas, but her family discovers his brother committed suicide so they call off the wedding (in case Avigdor possesses the same madness)… (Drama/Musical/Romance)

When they meet and fall in love with two young American girls, Lillian and Connie, who are vacationing in France, Ram and Eddie must decide whether they should move back to America with them, or stay in Paris for the freedom it allows them. (Drama/Music/Romance)

One afternoon at the local park, Selena meets Gordon Ralfe, a thoughtful young office worker whose kind-hearted treatment of her results in her falling in love with him, unaware that he is black. They continue to meet in the park every afternoon and he teaches her how to get along in the city. But when the cruel, domineering Rose-Ann learns of their relationship, she forbids her to have anything more to do with him because he is black. Calling all ghouls and ghosts… it’s Serendipity 3’s 1st Halloween on Lincoln Road and will feature three deliciously gruesome cocktails for the occasion. Not for the faint of heart, these cocktails might be an eye sore, but will do more than spook the taste buds.

The Brain Hemorrhage is a $7 shot of peach schnapps and Bailey’s with a few drops of oozed grenadine, surgically concocted to create the illusion of a bleeding brain.

The Bleeding Heart Martini is a $10 delicious libation of vodka, simple syrup and candied baby beets, the sight may be ghastly, but those brave enough will fall in love.

The Pumpkin Martini is a $10 sinful blend of vanilla vodka, amaretto, pumpkin purée, a splash of simple syrup and a dash of cinnamon mixed together for a sweet treat.

The witches are brewing their delicious kettles of concoctions at Serendipity 3 on Lincoln Road every night up to and including Halloween to get poisoned by one of their potions.

In 1966, the Beatles stopped touring. Of course, they kept making records. Really great records. They just never performed them live.

The Fab Faux picks up where the Beatles left off as live performers. The Beatles tribute–heralded as the best in the world by everyone from Rolling Stone to Paul McCartney–performs the Beatles’ latter records as faithfully to the recordings as possible. They leave the wigs at home.

The group is led by Jimmy Vivino of Conan O’Brien’s band and Will Lee of David Letterman’s. Lee is a Grammy winner and has performed with three of the Beatles. The Fab Faux is five piece–a necessity for performing the Beatles’ complex masterpieces–and brings a horn section and a string section to round it out.

It’s been a year and a half since the Fab Faux’s last visit to south Florida. In that time, their live appearances have only generated more buzz. In Los Angeles last year, Gary Oldman made a surprise appearance and introduced the band, while Bill Mayer, Bill Bob Thornton, Jeff Bridges and many more famous Beatles lovers looked on.

At their Parker Playhouse concert, the Fab Faux will perform Magical Mystery Tour in its entirety, followed by a second set of selections from other albums. The Fab Faux is the one band any Beatles fan must see. http://www.thefabfaux.com/

Girls’ Club presents Following the Line, featuring works by thirty international artists using hand-drawn line as the primary unit of expression. Curated by Miami gallerist Carol Jazzar, the works in Following the Line are created in many mediums, including graphite, ink, colored pencil, layered mylar, etching, aquatint, lithography and hand-drawn animation.

Manifesting the close connection to the artist’s hand and thought, drawings have historically been defined as intimate. Some are smaller in scale. Some are conceived as preparatory to final works in other media. Drawings may commit fleeting, ephemeral concepts to paper, itself a less permanent support. The persistent vitality of drawing today, developing alongside high tech digital and moving image media, will be emphasized. Linear works that owe their inspiration to drawing will craft an “expanded” definition of drawing in use today.

A catalog designed by Augusto Mendoza will accompany the exhibition and includes essays by curator Carol Jazzar, independent curator and writer Sue Spaid, and poetry by Denise Duhamel.

A year-long schedule of artist talks, workshops and film screenings invite the public to share Girls’ Club’s investigation of drawing in contemporary art. For details of events visit: http://girlsclubcollection.org/events.

Night Train is a post-modern Rockabilly quartet influenced by artists such as: The Stray Cats; Robert Gordon; Tom Waits and the Sun Studios Records era. Night-Train is comprised of four of South Florida’s well-known musicians: Elsten Torres (lead vocals / acoustic guitar); Sean “Birdman” Gould (lead guitar); Chris DeAngelis (upright bass); and Ramon “Monchy” Corugedo (drums). They are an all-original, classic rock n roll band that will transport you back to a time when everyone was swinging their hips and bobbing their heads to the rockabilly boogie.

Exhibition: November Contemporary
November 2 – November 24, 2012

November Contemporary is the 6th event of a series that features painting, sculpture, installation, photography, performances, collage and video of international artists.

Nina Torres Fine Art has established the first waterfront gallery in the heart of Downtown Miami, in what it promises to be Miami’s true cultural destination: the Miami Arts & Entertainment District.

The brand new 8,000 square feet gallery space across the street of Margaret Pace Park is located at 1800 North Bayshore Drive, in a high-rise building adorned with fountains and with breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay, Miami Beach and the Port of Miami.

About her invitation to join at the group show November Contemporary the young artist is very happy. But what is it that makes her work so different? Carmen Graber replies: “My acrylic paintings are often formed by photographs I find in magazines, books and other visual media. The focus of my interest lies on composition and the protagonists’ pose in the images, as well as the openness in interpreting their actions. A special meaning lies in the gesture that indicates cultural, social or political discrepancies. In my work, the motive of the child is a symbol not only for what is in the present but also always for what will be in the future and therefore stands for duration. Although the motifs are taken from reality, I have taken them from their context. The result is equivalent to my inner point of view. You can see it in my works Comprehension, Summerday, Amor and Girl with Cat.”

Carmen Graber, born 1979 in Landau/ Germany, is constantly on the search for contradictions, inconsistencies or alienations. In her latest series Carmen Graber expands her art to the integration of ad-hoc photos that show spontaneously taking scenes of the day-to-day live. The figures seem to act as on stage. She succeeds in reflecting the discomfort and depression of modern society in simple gestures, posture and directness of the people on display with their dreamy facial expression.
The recent exhibition at Nina Torres Fine Art Miami offers an opportunity in-depth reflection upon Carmen Graber`s individual works – to be visited from November 2 to November 24, 2012.
