MIAMI, FL The Color Mob 5K hits Miami on Saturday, July 27, 2013 and will transform a horde of runners and walkers into a living work of abstract art. Colored cornstarch will be hurled at entrants as they make their way through the course in this fun run, and there will be live music and a beer garden to greet 5K participants when they cross the finish line as newly minted color abstractions that would make Jackson Pollock proud.

In the Color Mob 5K, it’s suggested participants wear white to fully maximize the effect of passing through these vivid Technicolor clouds. Costumes are always welcomed too. The colored corn starch used to “paint” the 5K-ers may take more than one wash to get out of clothing, though, so it goes without saying that no one should show up wearing their Sunday best. Color Mob 5K is open to all ages, with children under age 2 getting in for free. Registration for this colorful event opens at 11am, with racers leaving the start in waves every 5 minutes between 12 and 2pm at Oleta River State Park. A full afternoon at the park followed by live music, a beer garden, and food makes for a fun and unique experience for families, groups, couples and individuals.

While strollers are certainly welcomed, pets will have to stay at home, no matter how adorable they would look covered in bright powder. And for the more serious racers, there’s no reason to bring your custom timing chips because the point of this 5K isn’t to set any personal bests (and it will not be timed); the point is to get blasted with clouds of color and come out the other side of the course looking like the exterior of a hippy bus. Registration is non-refundable but is transferable. So what are you waiting for? Get signed up and get colorful. For more information or to register visit http://www.colormob5k.com/miami.

Brian Lemmerman: Report on the 2013 Miami-Dade Transportation Summit 6/6/13

Guest Report By Brian Lemmerman

image

Rarely does a full-day local government-run conference in the middle of a workweek draw such a massive crowd. For that, Miami-Dade County, I applaud thee. The entire event was well-run and administered without technical difficulties. Those are our tax dollars at work.

The full day summit was split into two tracks: an infrastructure/technology track and a financial track, where expert panelists spoke about their niches and responded to public comments. As an urban planner, I opted to attend the infrastructure track. Presentations consisted of 95% background and 5% future visioning. I’m going to focus on the 5%. You can also catch the Twitter conversation at #MDCTransit13 for the next 20 or so days before the hashtag gets gobbled up by the internets.

image

Miami-Dade County Mayor, Carlos Gimenez set the tone with a case for smart transit, a type of transportation that is not only efficient, but integrates with technology that makes transit readily accessible to everyone. We’re talking about kinetic rail systems and battery-powered bus rapid transit that charges through induction on the highway and can support itself off the highway for miles before returning for a recharge.

MDX’s (Miami-Dade Expressway Authority) chair, Maurice Ferre discussed his vision for retrofitting our existing highway infrastructure with these technologies to make the most of what we already have. Many audience members, including Transit Miami’s Matthew Toro pushed back on this ideal, expressing that we’re perpetuating our reliance on 20th century modes of transportation and outdated ways of thinking.

Citizen feedback was split 50/50 between topics regarding bus/rail, and topics surrounding sustainability/climate change/bicycling. The conversation around climate and cycling, topics scarcely touched on by the experts, generated significantly more audience buzz both in the crowd and on Twitter – often rousing applause. Three times consecutively, however, audience comments (including my own) addressing solar technology incorporation, sea level rise consideration and bicycle intergration were politely dismissed and tabled by the panel moderator in favor of other questions.

In the latter half of the summit, Coconut Grove Collaborative CEO, J.S. Rashid, called for the “reprioritizing of transit solutions in our communities”, expressing that supporting low-income communities with reliable public transportation is essential not only for making economic opportunity equally accessible, but also for saving employers on salary premiums paid out to the car-owning upper-middle class who generally have higher living expenses.

Toward the closing, panelists discussed how leadership drives ridership. A question from Marketing Professional, Francine Madera regarding how often each of the elected officials at the front of the room actively use public transportation revealed that, although some take the bus or MetroRail to work or for weekend excursions a couple days a week, most of the time, they drive.

Takeaways

  1. The general theme of the conference was Smart Transit with a preface of rehabilitating our existing infrastructure. Miami-Dade Transit Agencies are focused first on giving our highways a consistent experience i.e. all of the exits on the 836 Dolphin Expressway should be on the right. Then, they’re focusing on retrofitting those highways with new technologies for electric or hybrid bus rapid transit systems.
  2. Miami-Dade County doesn’t yet have canned responses for questions and comments regarding climate change, solar energy or bicycling when it comes to transit, although it was apparent that many of the panelists weren’t closed entirely off from the issues.
  3. We have to be willing to pay for everything we want. Transit authorities made it clear several times throughout the day that magical transit solutions don’t just appear out of thin air. One of the most hyperbolized quotes of the day:

Everyone wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die.

Cool Statistics Mentioned by Panelists

Fact Checking is Encouraged

  • A single Miami MetroRail car costs $3 million. A metro mover car costs $2 million.
  • Every dollar invested in transit yields $3.5 dollars in wealth for our communities.
  • 70% of Miami Transit is subsidized. The U.S. average is 50%.
  • 3% of Miami-Dade’s population uses mass transit compared to 13% in New York. When asked who in the room uses Miami’s public transportation, roughly 90% of the hands went up. >> I was just informed that these numbers put out by Maurice Ferre are entirely inaccurate. I will provide an update once I review the data.

What was Accomplished

I’m not exactly sure. Experts gave citizens the vision for the future. Citizens expressed concerns and gave constructive feedback. My hope is that civilian input will be taken into consideration when planning our next 20-30 years of transportation systems.

On another note, a small group of young people were united both in person and via Twitter. Here’s a list of people I interacted with who care deeply about the future of Miami:

Miami-Dade Expressway Authority’s Social Media manager made himself known. This a major development, given that MDX expressed a dire need to jump on social media at their council meeting back in April. His name is Mario Diaz, and can be contacted via Twitter @MDXway. Please be nice and send him informed questions and comments. He has better things to do than answer baseborn 140-character complaints from the uneducated public. He gets those all day and ignores them.

My Thoughts

To guide the conversation away from using automobiles and toward using other forms of transit, I feel that public transportation in Miami needs a full brand overhaul. If we really want people to make that shift, it won’t matter how reliable the bus schedules are or how advanced our new high-speed rail systems get. Taking the bus or the MetroRail today, you feel like a second-rate citizen – most of the time, waiting unshaded along a 6-lane freeway, sitting next to coughing strangers, breathing black diesel exhaust, avoiding the sticky seat, and wondering how those kids etched graffiti into the glass. It’s as though our current transit system was designed without human enjoyment in mind, and it has deteriorated over time as a result. Remember, it costs $3 million for a single MetroRail car.

I think it’s time we make public transportation sexy in Miami.

The way advertisers have managed to make driving sexy. Except we won’t do it with fancy cupholders and all-wheel drive. We’ll do it with unique experiences that driving doesn’t offer.

I had a conversation with Mary Adelyn Kauffman, a musician and doctoral fellow from the University of Miami, who shared with me some of the great transit experiences her travels in Germany had to offer that could work just as well here:

  • The Party Bus – a downtown circulator complete with disco ball and music to transport pub crawlers (and other people too).
  • Weekend concerts and performances on the train in partnership with local performing arts schools.
  • A monthly “Leave Your Car at Home Day” with incentives provided at local events and other venues.

Please share your thoughts and ideas here in the comments.

I also recommend reading this book: “Making Transit Fun! How to Entice Motorists from Their Cars (and onto their feet, a bike, or bus)” by Darrin Nordahl. It’s only $3 if you have a Kindle.

Mike Diana: Miami or Bust

Miami, FL 33132
www.basfisherinvitational.com
In 1994, underground cartoonist, filmmaker, amateur publisher and First Amendment champion Mike Diana became the first artist ever to receive a criminal conviction for obscenity for artwork in the United States. When Mike Diana was 9 years-old, his family moved from Geneva, New York to Largo, Florida. He began to draw constantly, becoming a fan of underground comics as a teen. Soon after graduating high school, he began printing his own comics, including the series, Boiled Angel, which grew to 300 subscribers mostly in cities outside of of Florida. This is a true feat, considering that this was a time before online social media. In 1991, a copy ended up in the hands of a California law enforcement officer who falsely linked Diana with the then unsolved Gainesville student murders. The FBI was alerted, Diana was investigated but Diana was ultimately cleared of all involvement. However, the hysterics continued.
The trial judge found the work “patently offensive” and stated,
“The evident goal of the appellant’s publication is to portray shocking and graphic pictures of sexual conduct so it will be noticed. If the message is about victimization and that horrible things are happening in our society, as the appellant alleges, the appellant SHOULD HAVE created a vehicle to send his message that was not obscene.”

This summer, in a quiet Miami neighborhood and within the Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ’s intimate, historic Spanish-revival style setting, concert goers will have the unique opportunity to be awed and entertained by the music industry’s most-talented and revered classical and jazz figures.  These artists will perform and delight audiences on the Community Arts Program (CAP) 2013 Summer Concert Series titled Then Swings My Soul!

The Community Arts Program (CAP) Summer Concert Series has entertained more than 62,000 people since it began in 1985.  The Series has grown into a valued tradition and, more recently, part of a Community Arts Program that also provides music education to children within its Conservatory for the Arts.  "The Community Arts Program (CAP) Summer Concert Series is a rare opportunity to hear world-renowned artists in the intimate and beautiful Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ," says Shelton G. Berg, University of Miami Dean of the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music.  "The CAP Conservatory for the Arts provides high-quality music education to children, many of whom would otherwise be denied access to the wonder of music and the beauty of the artistic spirit."

"We are very excited to again present a diverse and world-class line up of artists," says Mark Hart, Executive & Artistic Director of the Community Arts Program.  "It’s an honor to welcome concert goers from across the state and as far away as Europe, and rewarding to see the growth of our music education program for kids!  In all, we’ve come to provide exceptional cultural and educationally-enriching experiences for more than 3,000 children and adults each year!"

Sailor Jerry, the iconic Spiced Rum, today announced it will partner with popular Miami watering holes Brother Jimmy’s BBQ, Sandbar Grill and Blackbird Ordinary to host a celebration to commemorate the life of Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, the father of the old school tattooing and the inspiration behind the rum brand itself. Recognized as “Sailor Jerry Day,” June 12th is the date Collins passed away in 1973. If Collins was alive today, he would be turning 102 years old this year.

To mark the occasion, drink specials will be available on Sailor Jerry cocktails such as the Backyard Tea (Arnold Palmer with Sailor Jerry) and Sailor Moons (shot of Sailor Jerry in a Blue Moon beer) at participating locations  throughout the evening. Fans will also be invited to join a hula hoop contest at Brother Jimmy’s BBQ for a chance to win a Sailor Jerry duffle bag filled with Sailor Jerry goodies.

Born January 14th 1911, Norman Collins was a hard living, tough Navy sea dog who set up a tattoo shop in Honolulu in the 1930’s. Over the next 40 years, he carved out a unique style that would change the face of tattooing forever.  Perfecting a deftly crafted, boldly lined style that blended American design and traditions with Asiatic coloring and sensibilities, the iconic “Sailor Jerry” tattoo has become one of the most recognizable icons of Americana, representing an authentic attitude and spirit of rebellion. Collins also revolutionized the industry by advocating for regulated standards of sterilization and sanitation that are still met in modern day tattoo shops.

This Saturday night! Join us at MOVA South Beach for their Absolut Outrageous Masterpiece party. 50 Artists were selected nation wide and commissioned by Absolut Vodka to produce a 4 foot tall bottle sculpture depicting a specific Absolut signature cocktail. Artist Carl Pascuzzi was paired with MOVA and the Absolut Cosmopolitan to design his Absolut Outrageous Masterpiece entry titled “Swimming in the Cosmic Cosmos.” Sultry sounds of DJ VButterfly will fill the room and provide movement to the sound activated bottle. Expect plenty of Absolut surprises and drink specials but most importantly support Miami in the National competition by voting on the Absolut Outrageous Facebook page for Carl Pascuzzi’s interactive design.
Voting ends June 30th 2013.

Kontempo Art, a contemporary art gallery located in fabulously eclectic Calle Ocho, is proud to present Ileana Collazo’s Floral Fantasies.

In her words: “My work includes not only flowers, but bursts of abstract shapes and colors; lines that form seductive structures. To encapsulate it’s essence; I create small worlds of movement, colors, and shapes that entice the observer to travel through my work surface—colliding with the images, finding their way around to yet another shape, and finding it as alluring to linger gazing at them as I find it to linger in a garden; also, my work is representative of the twists, turns, bumps, and alternatives that each of us transverses in the course of our daily lives.”

Ileana was born in Ciego de Avila, Cuba. She lived in Spain, Florida, New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts; before returning to Miami, where she began her artistic career.

Touch Me Hear is an experimental multimedia work developed last month at Inkub8 as a part of their generous Artist Residency. It was commissioned by Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center (New York). The opus explores the relationship between touch, sound and movement. Body parts and its extensions such as hair and clothes become performable musical instruments. From skin sensations to complex digital tactile simulations, the piece exposes disappearing awareness between what can be felt and what actually is. A continuum of scenes filled with humor, solitude and emotionally charged movement contemplate the contemporary world of intertwined vibrations and modalities.

Mayors Jewelers Hosts Rolex Deepsea Challenge Exhibition in Aventura Location 6/21/2013 – 7/8/2013

The Rolex Deepsea Challenge Exhibition will be on display for the first time in Florida, exclusively at Mayors Jewelers in Aventura from June 21st to July 8th, 2013.

On March 26, 2012, filmmaker and explorer James Cameron made an unprecedented solo dive to the deepest point in the ocean, Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, southwest of Guam in the Pacific Ocean, with the experimental ROLEX DEEPSEA CHALLENGE watch attached to the exterior of his submersible. The ROLEX DEEPSEA CHALLENGE descended to a depth of 35,756 feet, defying extreme technical challenges and showcased Rolex’s amazing waterproof capabilities during an expedition that opened a new chapter in deep-sea exploration.

“The ROLEX DEEPSEA CHALLENGE was the reliable companion throughout the dive; it was visible on the sub’s manipulator arm and working precisely at 10,898 meters down at the bottom of Challenger Deep,” James Cameron said after his historic dive. “It’s a tremendous example of engineering know-how, and an ideal match for the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER submersible.”

On board with Cameron acting as his lucky charm was the ‘Old Lady,’ the history-making 1960 ROLEX DEEP SEA SPECIAL experimental watch that had accompanied Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard and the then Lieutenant Don Walsh on their legendary dive in the bathyscaphe TRIESTE on January 23, 1960, the first and until Cameron’s dive, the only manned dive to what was then the deepest-known point in the Mariana Trench. On that exploit, the ROLEX DEEP SEA SPECIAL, attached to the hull of the Trieste reached a depth of 35,814 feet returning to the surface in perfect working order, a feat that remained unrivalled for more than half a century.

The educational Rolex Deepsea Challenge Exhibition in partnership with the National Geography Society includes interactive audio and visual and will showcase both renowned watches. This is a traveling exhibition and will later move to Mayors Jewelers in Orlando.

Edge Zones presents the second annual Miami Performance International Festival from June 1– 30, 2013. M/P ‘13 is an exciting four-week program of performance art accompanied by video screenings, talks and workshops that culminate in an intense 4-day event. The festival is a tremendous opportunity for the public to come face-to-face with the breadth and depth of performance art and offers visceral and challenging performance works by renowned, mid-career and emerging artists from 19 countries, as well as more than 40 national and local artists. This annual event provides a look at the creative process across a range of media, and presents cross-disciplinary, collaborative work that speaks to the high level of innovation, critical thinking, and social engagement in Miami. Events are free but availability is limited.

In celebration of Miami-Dade’s diverse art scene, works will be showcased by over 35 international artists across the city in a range of sites, including: the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens and at Edge Zones Projects at the Miami Design District.

Miami Performance International Festival ‘13 is a much-needed networking platform for the art community and brings together the most important curators, artists and arts organizations from Latin America, the Caribbean and around the world.

Curated by Charo Oquet, Miami; Eliu Almonte, Dominican Republic; Pancho Lopez, Mexico, Miami will be immersed in the participation of 70 international and local artists. Unlike theater and dance, all MP ‘13 performances have no designated areas nor are they presented on a stage, but rather on the floor, dissolving the boundary between the artists and viewers.

Artists from the UK, Austria, USA, Dominican Republic, Argentina, Portugal, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Cuba, Panama, Canada, Colombia, France, Chile, Poland and Brazil.  This dialogue will continue throughout the year on Internet platforms through the Edge Zones and Miami Performance International Festival web portal (http://www.edgezones.org) and online blogs.

Obviously, "the media" isn’t the monolith it used to be. There are so many options now and so many different types of media in the ever-evolving marketing landscape.  Arts groups waste a lot of time, money, and trees on fruitless media outreach.  Join the Arts & Business Council of Miami for this program, which will give you the tools you need to develop a strategic media plan. The panel of media pros will provide you with tips on how to connect with them, get their attention and get covered! There will be lots of time for Q&A and discussion. Publicity is the oxygen of recognition.  How can your arts group increase your visibility?  This workshop will give you the tools to develop a targeted media plan.

Panel:
Facilitator: Suzette Espinosa, Adrienne Arsht Center
Harvey Burstein, Miami ArtZine

growth hacker (noun) – one whose passion and focus is pushing a metric through use of a testable and scalable methodology.

“Growth hacker” is a new word for most but a long held practice among the best internet marketers and product managers in Silicon Valley. With mass media fading away and the onslaught of mass customization & niching on the web, marketing as we known it for the past 100 years has died. People are awash with mounds of data and marketing fatigue is at an all-time high. Users are drowning and won’t pay attention to the next best widget, regardless of how good it is. Distribution is now the number one problem that faces every product and every startup.

Aaron Ginn: I am a growth hacker. I apply my study of people and metaphysics to marketing, product development, and entrepreneurship. I live and breathe distribution. My approach is product driven, data inspired, and cross-disciplinary (pulling in my experience with philosophy and behavioral economics). I’ve helped grow the Romney Campaign to the millions and StumbleUpon’s users by tens of millions.

Also we’ll be having a limited seating hands on workshop with Aaron Ginn, Friday June 28th from 9am – 12pm.

One Drop Theory- EP Release Showcase 6/28/13

One Drop Theory- EP Release Showcase

Dimensions Variable
100 NE 11th Street
Miami, FL 33132.

Join us for a one night EP release showcase for Miami’s indielectro pop duo One Drop Theory.

Dimensions Variable is pleased to host the CD release event for Miami’s indielectro pop duo One Drop Theory. The event will be on Friday, June 28th, 2013 at 8pm. The duo will perform live and cocktails will be served.

One Drop Theory’s self titled release is a collaborative EP endeavor between Susie Green & Isaac Bichachi. After several years of working in the music industry as writers and producers, these two classically trained Miami musicians decided to combine past and future to create an alternate present. The album crafts One Drop Theory’s delicate composition sensibilities and mastery of synthesized sounds with powerful vocals.

Green’s melodic voice and sampler interventions weave life into Bichachi’s synthetic electronic and production. Tracks like Rails, an electronic instrumental roller coaster ride show off the duo’s passion for electronic compositions. The groups most hypnotic track called Fool’s Circle is best described by a quote from Albert Einstein: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result." This quote highlights the track and sheds light on how individuals and society don’t learn from their mistakes and continue to cycle around the same vicious loop. And finally, an anthem for all those who feel marginalized, Freak Flag establishes a banner in which to stand united.

Miami, FL 33156

Saks Fifth Avenue celebrates Father’s Day each year with a special initiative aimed at providing customers with gift options perfect for dad. In 2013, Saks is showcasing the small items, such as lapel accents, watches, socks, fragrance, laces, bowties and jewelry, that customers can give to dads for Father’s Day to transform and rejuvenate their wardrobes.

As Saks focuses on the little things that can make a big difference in fashion, it too is focusing on the “little things” that make the biggest difference in a Father’s life—his children—by hosting a charitable shopping event in partnership with St. Jude. Saks Fifth Avenue will donate 5% of all men’s purchases between Thursday, June 13 and Sunday, June 16 up to $25,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to benefit research.

“The Saks Fifth Avenue Father’s Day Event pays tribute to the little things that make a big difference in our community: our children,” says Thomas Ott, SVP GMM Menswear, Home, Food & Gifts. “We proudly support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. With any men’s purchase, customers will have the opportunity to give their fathers a gorgeous gift from Saks and a donation towards children’s health.”

The initiative will be supported with a special series of in-store events, special visual statements, advertisements, and a catalog and gift guide for customers. Attached is a gift guide featuring Saks’ favorite “Little Things” for Father’s Day.

Sonia Delaunay was a Jewish-French artist who, with her husband Robert Delaunay and others, cofounded the Orphism art movement. It is noted for its use of strong colors and geometric shapes. Her work extends to painting, textile design and stage set design. Sonia was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre in 1964. By 1975 she was named an officer of the French Legion of Honor. Her work in modern design included the concepts of geometric abstraction, the integration of furniture, fabrics, wall coverings, and clothing.
Professor M. Kathleen Colussy, M.F.A. has traveled to seventy-one countries on five continents where she has researched and photographed numerous cultures. Colussy’s gift for fashion, textile print design and photography, helped her create a new fine art series of handmade books. This skill contends with the dueling realities of the slick gloss travel brochures along with the sometimes-gritty reality of the indigenous people living and/or working in a given country.

Reservations are required.

In 1955, Bettie Page (1923-2008) waits to testify before a Senate subcommittee investigating the effects of pornographic material on American adolescents and juveniles. In flashbacks, we see her childhood in Tennessee, a brief marriage, a gang rape, and her going to New York City in 1949. There she takes acting lessons, models for photos, and acts in short films for adults, earning the nickname, “The Pin-Up Queen of the Universe.” We see her relationship with merchants Irving and Paula Klaw, photographers John Willie and Bunny Yeager, boyfriends, and the public. Through it all, she is wholesome, sporting, and forthright – Eve before the fall.

Miami New Times’ Iron Fork is Miami’s most hotly anticipated culinary event. This year on August 1st, we up the ante by partnering with the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau to kick off two months of discounted three-course meals at Miami’s best restaurants during Miami Spice.

Planned at the beautiful Adrienne Arsht Center For The Performing Arts, in Downtown Miami, the 2013 Iron Fork will draw thousands of food lovers from across Greater Miami. They will watch two of our cities finest chefs go pot-to-pot in a sizzling showdown for supremacy overseen by famed “Mango Gang” veteran Allen Susser.

Each competitor will receive a basket of foodstuffs-plus one secret ingredient-then create a tantalizing creation before a panel of local celebrity chefs hand selected by Chef Allen. The winner will receive the prestigious New Times Iron Fork award, signifying the area’s top toque. For more info on the Miami Spice Dining Program go to ilovemiamispice.com. Chop to it!

The sixth-annual Miami New Times Iron Fork/Miami Spice Kick-off Event, presented by the Downtown Miami Development Authority, will be held this year on Thursday, August 1, 2013, at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. This year’s unique VIP experience will invite dining aficionados to wine and dine directly on the stage of the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall, as they enjoy food and entertainment inspired by Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, Norwegian Getaway, the largest ship to homeport in Miami beginning in February.

VIP guests will get a taste of Norwegian Getaway’s headline entertainment as they experience  performances by seven-time Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical Legally Blonde. Guests who purchase general admission tickets will also have the opportunity to enjoy this musical medley from the theater’s box seats and second tier. Four performances will be offered throughout the evening, starting at 7:00 p.m.

Guests visiting Norwegian’s VIP Stage Lounge will also enjoy culinary delights inspired by Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian, Norwegian Getaway’s seafood restaurant created by the celebrity chef and Food Network star,  and sip on tasty libations provided by Miami Spice sponsors.

Iron Fork will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. and will feature delectable creations by more than 45 Miami Spice luxury and fine-dining restaurants for an evening of gourmet food selections, delicious beverages, and live entertainment. Music performers will include JUke, Aaron Lebos Reality, and Steve Acho. Guests who prefer a more intimate dining experience may purchase VIP tickets, which include entry to the event one hour early, at 6 p.m., and access to the Norwegian Cruise Line VIP Stage Lounge.

One Night only Charity Art Exhibit Event Features Harvard University Guest
The Belen Art Exhibit a Canvas of Hope is the first of its kind in the US

Miami, FL- June 5, 2013- On Friday June 14th, the Community Health Council (CHC) in Partnership with the Peruvian American Chamber of Commerce will present the one-night only Belen Art Exhibit charity event at the Pan American Art Projects in Wynwood. The art exhibit titled A Canvas of Hope: Art by the Children of the Slums of the Amazon is the first exhibit of its kind ever created to benefit the Community Health Council. The children that live in extreme poverty in the city of Belen use artwork as a way of self-expression and learning. The event begins at 7pm.

The evening’s special guest is Adam Frange, a Harvard University Teaching Fellow and the Executive Director and founder of the Community Health Council. He is flying down from Harvard University to talk about the important work he is doing in Belen and to generate awareness of the living conditions of the families and children who live there. More specifically, the CHC, which already runs a clinic in Belen, wants to build a community center to provide the citizens with much needed services.

Included in this exhibit is photography by Zag Adams, son of the world renowned Patch Adams, who was portrayed in the hit movie by Robin Williams. Zag has captured the everyday plight and beauty of the people of the Amazon. His ability to document life in the city of Belen is unparalleled and the photographs will be available for purchase.

“As the gateway to Latin America we are so happy and honored to present this exhibit in Miami. We’re excited to talk about our work in Peru and share the experience of daily life in Belen as seen through the drawings and paintings of improvished Peruvian children and the photographic work of Zag Adams,” said Frange.

Tickets for the event are $50 and it includes special cocktails and delicious bites from local Peruvian restaurants. Tickets can be purchased at www.belenartexhibit.com. The Pan American Art Projects gallery is located at 2450 NW 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33127.

Photographs from Marchio Ospitalita’ Italiana Award Ceremony at Mia Cucina 5/15/2013

Italian cuisine has always been an important tool for the promotion of Italy and has effectively promoted not only Italian products but also the Italian economy and culture the world over. Italian cuisine is appreciated by Americans and local restaurants serving it are often preferred destinations for a fine dining experience. Thus restaurants have a significant role to play in this promotional exercise and thus it is required that those serving authentic Italian cuisine are recognized.

It is with this purpose that Unioncamere and Assocamerestero in collaboration with Federazione Italiana Pubblici Esercizi and with the support of Istituto Nazionale Ricerche turistiche – ISNART have constituted the certification “Ospitalità Italiana – Ristoranti Italiani nel Mondo” – a seal of quality, to be conferred on Italian restaurants around the world.

The Italy-America Chamber of Commerce Southeast (IACCSE) collaborated with the organizers in the selection of local restaurants in South Florida serving authentic Italian cuisine, for the certification and seeking participation of those eligible for the “Premio Ristoranti Italiani nel Mondo”, Italian restaurants in the world award 2010, which is conferred on the best Italian restaurant annually.

The ceremony

Italy’s Ambassador to the U.S., H.E. Claudio Bisogniero, has chosen to attend the Marchio Ospitalita’ Italiana award ceremony on May 8th as his first meeting during his stay in Miami.

H.E. Bisogniero has in fact consigned the seals, together with Hon. Adolfo Barattolo, Consul General of Italy in Miami, to the eleven selected restaurants in Miami at the Mia Cucina Showroom in Coral Gables.

The evening has been a great success, the winners have received their awards along with six restaurants that have been confirmed for the second year in a row. Over 100 guests have attended the ceremony followed by a rich tasting of Italian food and beverages kindly offered by Cibo Wine Bar, deiFrescobaldi, La Suiza Bakery, Salumeria 104, TiramesU, Top Wines Import – La Cacciatora.

Jamie DeRosa / Tongue & Cheek

South Beach just got even cheekier. Over in the South of Fifth neighborhood, collaborators Jamie DeRosa and Michael Reginbogin are reconstructing our notions of what constitutes a contemporary American dish.

“Tongue & Cheek to me is whimsical, it’s fun,” explains DeRosa. “We have a play on words on a lot of things. We have a pudding pop on the menu that’s a popsicle. It started out as a chocolate popsicle and someone said, ‘This is better than a Bill Cosby pudding pop.’ And that became the name.”

Other mouthfuls on the menu include a Beef Cheek burger that arrives sans the usual trappings (no lettuce, no tomato). “No frills, no thrills,” as DeRosa says. Of course, DeRosa and his team are serving up plenty of cheek and tongue variations, including a poutine.

Even the cocktail names are creative. Try a Bourbon for Apples, with bourbon-soaked apple ice cubes floating in a cooling concoction, or the strawberry-and-gin-based Walking Dead (DeRosa is a fan of the AMC television hit). Like any good South Beach establishment, Tongue & Cheek also features a molecular margarita with an overflowing liquid nitrogen preparation.

“I think the name and the ambiance and the more welcoming vibe that you get when you come into Tongue & Cheek matches the food,” DeRosa explains. “For us it was important to have art and music and food and service be one.” It’s all in an effort to keep Tongue & Cheek a neighborhood hangout that appeals to locals. For instance, every day at 5pm, guests can sit down for a family-style meal of comfort-food morsels like grilled cheese and hoagies. It’s Tongue & Cheek’s way of giving back to the community.

Check out the video above to get a glimpse of the restaurant’s witty art by local Miamian Claudio Picasso and hear what’s on the daily-rotating family meal menu. Then stop in and grab a seat at the snack bar serving nostalgic bottled sodas and made-to-order small plates presented in old-school cafeteria trays. They have tongues wagging.

Curated by Ombretta Agro’ Andruff, Unpredictable Patterns of Behavior presents 12 artists, architects and composers that relate to patterns in very unique and distinctive ways. Whether they extrapolate natural patterns and integrate them in their art-making processes, or play with geometrical patterns, or yet create their own patterns inspired by existing man-made landscapes or by invented systems, they all offer us the opportunity to go beyond the pure aesthetic enjoyment of the artworks featured in the galleries, and reflect upon the patterns that served as their inspirations. This exhibition is a sequel to Agro’ Andruff’s 2012 New York exhibition, “(Un) Folding Patterns.”  The New York show focused on the relationship between mathematics and the visual arts. This sequel explores how creative minds interpret patterns across the artistic disciplines.

The Attack (L’attentat)
a film by Ziad Doueiri
Based on Yasmina Khadra’s controversial international bestseller L’attentat
Lebanon, France, Qatar, Belgium | drama | 104 min. | trailer
Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles

An Arab surgeon living in Tel Aviv discovers a dark secret about his wife in the aftermath of a suicide bombing.

The Attack begins with a hero unusual to cinema: a Palestinian who is a citizen of Israel and a surgeon in a Tel Aviv hospital. Dr. Amin Jaafari (Ali Suliman) is on the verge of receiving a prestigious award from his peers when he gets a frantic cell phone call from his wife Siham. It is the last time he will ever hear her voice. A bomb goes off in a nearby café, and dozens of victims are brought to the hospital for treatment. Siham is among the dead, but not among the victims; incomprehensibly, this educated, upper-middle class woman was carrying the suicide bomb.

Amin’s world is turned upside down; how could his own wife, the love of his life, commit such an atrocity? The Attack is about Amin’s overwhelming feelings of futility as he attempts to make sense of a terrorism born in his own home. Yet writer/director Ziad Doueiri’s film is not despairing. It makes horror personal; it asks us what changes can we make in our own world? The recent wounds of the Boston marathon bomb give us an even more visceral emotional participation.

In a shocking and discouraging twist, in mid-May of this year, the League of Arab States instructed its 22 member nations to boycott The Attack, as Lebanese-born Doueiri shot the film in Israel, where it is forbidden for Lebanese citizens to travel. All release plans for this important and topical, dialogue-creating film in those nations have now been cancelled. Currently exiled in Paris, Doueiri will participate in a live question and answer session with the audience after the screening. – Jaie Laplante

This screening is co-sponsored by Coral Gables Art Cinema.

FrostArt Presents Who Are We? Who Are They? Opening 6/8/13

FrostArt Presents Who Are We? Who Are They? Opening
Saturday, June 8, 2013, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
frostmuseum-05-31-13The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum.
10975 SW 17th Street
Miami, FL 33199

Admission:  FREE

FrostArt (The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU) introduces two new exhibitions, both of which feature art as a tool to establish identity: How we see ourselves and how we perceive others, now and in the past. The two exhibitions, Six Degrees of Separate Nations: Ebony G. Patterson and Peterson Kamwathi, and Borders of Paradise: In the Eyes of Explorers, will have an opening reception on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at the Frost Art Museum, from 6pm-8pm. The wine and hors d’oeuvres reception is open to the public and free of charge.

The featured artists in the Six Degrees of Separate Nations, Ebony G. Patterson and Peterson Kamwathi, are from vastly different parts of the world, Jamaica and Kenya, respectively. Despite the geographical distance between them, they ironically share much in common. The influence of colonialism and the repercussions of colonial history have impacted how these artists perceive themselves today, as well as how they place themselves in proximity to the "other". A significant theme underlying both artists’ work – and thus the exhibition – is the examination of social behavior, specifically that of performance and theatricality. Ebony’s documentation, staging and appropriation of contemporary fashion, its insignia and pattern, explore the implicit link of dress code to social and political expression. Peterson Kamwathi, on the other hand, depicts theatrical social performance without appropriating its modes; rather taking on the role of an observer, he extra cts modes of behavior, staging scenarios that express the farcical nature of masquerade inherent to social conventions, and imposed political norms that are both inherited from colonial rule, and re-appropriated.

The exhibition, curated by Claire Breukel, will feature a collaborative installation where the artists will meet for the first time and respond to each other’s work. The Six Degrees of Separate Nations exhibition will run through September 8, 2013. The opening reception will be preceded by a panel discussion with the artists, the curator and guest speaker, University of Miami Professor Patricia Saunders, at 4:00 p.m., also at the Frost Art Museum. Like the reception, the panel discussion is open to the public and free of charge.

The second exhibition opening on June 8, Borders of Paradise: In the Eyes of Explorers, focuses on historical identity. Imagined and exaggerated depictions of the new continent and its offerings persisted through the nineteenth century, satisfying the appetites of curious Europeans hungry for tales of mysterious lost paradises and evolving primitive worlds. This exhibition, curated by Cynthia Duval of the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach, features maps, etchings and engravings, many of which appeared in literary works, which helped to reinforce and shape the Old World’s skewed perception of life in the New World. The Borders of Paradise exhibition will run through August 25, 2013.

In addition to these new exhibits, the following current exhibitions will be on display at the Museum on June 8:
• José Manuel Ballester: Concealed Spaces
• Deep Blue by Javier Velasco
• Spanish Colonial Art: The Beauty of Two Traditions

That is the concept and focus of the show. “On Cloud 9” is an inspirational and innovative journey through art where the soul is realized and takes flight. The show will leave you elevated. Come evolve with us and let your spirit soar!
There will be several featured artists on each of the 3 gallery floor levels. On the first floor, up and coming industrial design innovator, Jeff Olivier will be revealing his newest works. Jeff will be showcasing radical designs that break design rules regarding materials and production. Items will be made by wood, metal, glass, plastic, fiberglass, recycled materials, concrete, and cork. Jeff possesses a minimal, modern, and sleek style with an interesting use of unique materials.
The second floor will feature a variety of artists including Diego Romero, Melisa Caprio, Omnia Masoud, Anne DellaCamera, Eliane Harvey and many more. In addition to being in art heaven, Bars Healing expert, Tara Taglienti will be facilitating free 15 minute individual healing sessions for guests on opening night. For more information on Bars Healing visit: http://digitara.net/healing-energetics/
The third floor will be transformed into a retro lounge playing ethereal music by the infamous DJ One Star with refreshments provided by Zen Bartending. Entrepreneur and emerging artist Jessica Kizorek will be showing her first “Inner Light” series featuring back lit art that is sure to create a dynamic and sheik ambiance. Kizorek’s pieces will be complimented by photographer Melisa Caprio who wants to know, “What are you manifesting?” This is the question she asks in her latest project “Postcards to the Universe”. Caprio was inspired to use photography to help people manifest their desires. Through her own desires being fulfilled she wanted to inspire others to do the same and capture the experience through her art. People from all over the world write their Affirmations on postcards and mail them to her. She then photographs the cards in nature and compiles them to give people the opportunity to see their Affirmation in a published book, Postcards to the UniverseTM. A portion of the proceeds from the book are used to benefit different organizations around the world. At the gallery opening there will be an interactive activity for guests to write their own manifestations and be part of the magic and art.
Performing artist, singer and songwriter Dana DellaCamera will performing inspired numbers throughout the evening with choreography by Stephanie Espinosa. Dana is known for her surprise entrances and audience participation. She guarantees to be entertaining, creative, and daring, a must see for the evening. For more information on Dana and to hear her music visit: http://danamdellacamera.wix.com/danadellacamera

The show will culminate with a closing event on September 7th from 6:00pm-9:00pm hosted by Dana DellaCamera called “Spark” which will be a networking event for artists and people wanting to connect with artists. Dana is launching “Spark” because it aligns with her Life and Business Coaching by Dana Company, where business meets art! Dana is committed that people do what they love and make a living doing it. Drinks and refreshments will be provided. Admission is free and there will be a 30 minute presentation on how artists can direct more traffic to their websites to generate sales.

Photographs from Transit Talk at Avenue D on 5/29/13

Transit Talk at Avenue D on Wednesday, May 29, 2012.

Transit Talk featured a panel of local transit advocates and professionals that talked about the transit issues in Miami. The upcoming Transportation Summit (a separate event happening on June 6th) was a key topic — this pre-summit summit will provide information on what to expect and how to most effectively address transit issues. Other topics of interest include pedestrian and bike safety, walkable streets, and the current state of Miami-Dade’s transit ecosystem. Ideas sessions to directly follow discussion.

Transit Talk was presented by the Miami Foundation, in collaboration with the Miami DDA, Madera Events, WhereBy.Us, Move Miami Dade and the Citizen’s Independent Transportation Trust.

Information below via Transit Talk Transit Talk // Urban Mobility

1. Transit Talk: Preliminary Recap
While there is still more information and knowledge to go through and better understand, we hope you walked away with initial knowledge and insight into Miami-Dade’s Transportation eco-system. Wednesday’s turnout and participation showed us that this was the first step in the right direction. Thank you for showing up and being part of the conversation.

As we heard several times during the Talk, the process starts and ends with us so long as we are willing to partake in the overall process. Talking directly to commissioners is one of the most influential things we can do. Also key is setting our own transportation-taking precedent to our circle of friends and family and even passersby.

As mentioned Wednesday, one of our goals for the night was to share the panelists’ knowledge and perspective in anticipation of next week’s Transportation Summit. One notable point was that the Summit is intended to bring together decision makers to listen to what citizens have to say. Information on what to expect at the Summit is listed below (#3).

2. Transit Talk Survey: Initial Results
While all the survey information is currently being compiled, we would like to share preliminary results based on what you believe to be the biggest issue surrounding Miami-Dade County transit. According to Transit Talk attendees:
A. Infrastructure, specifically transit options and maintenance is the leading problem.
B. Lack of Leadership and Vision is perceived to be a very close second as a critical need.
C. Lack of Citizen Input in planning & decisions was cited as the third area of biggest concern.

The Transit Talk team will share these findings with officials and transportation decision makers at the Transportation Summit on June 6th. We invite anyone interested in presenting these topics to please let us know if you can join us. We would be grateful for assistance in compiling additional supporting stats and/or in communicating this message in-person on June 6th (please respond to this email).

3. Details & What To Expect at the 2013 Transportation Summit:
Kelly Cooper, Strategic Planner for the Citizen’s Independent Transportation Trust (CITT), provided a useful synopsis of what to expect at the Summit. The Summit will occur on June 6th, at Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus. 300 NE 2nd Ave, Chapman Conference Center, Room 3210.

The Summit’s location is conveniently accessible from the Metromover’s College/Bayside station
The entire event is open to any member of the public
Mayor Carlos Gimenez will deliver a Keynote Address at 9:30am
Breakout Sessions will occur between 10:15am and 3:30pm
Public Visioning Session begins at 4:30pm and will continue until necessary. All are welcomed to attend and discuss related issues. The session is open, so anyone will be welcomed even if they cannot arrive by 4:30pm. This is where/when the Transit Talk team will communicate the survey findings.

A number of prominent transportation decision makers, stakeholders and influencers are expected to be in attendance and have indicated that they are there, first and foremost, to listen to what citizens have to say.

4. Forthcoming Information from Transit Talk:
As stated above, the Transit Talk team will compile the full survey results shortly. This information, plus notes from the event and “6 Citizen Actions” as outline by Cesar Garcia-Pons, will be shared with all who registered. In addition, we will send any supporting documents as attachments.
