David Castillo Gallery presents TM Sisters’ Prismavolt Reception 9/12/13

David Castillo Gallery presents TM Sisters’ Prismavolt Reception
prismavoltThursday, September 12, 7-10 pm
David Castillo Gallery
2234 NW 2nd Avenue
Miami, FL  33127

September 12 – October 5, 2013
David Castillo Gallery is proud to present Prismavolt, a solo exhibition by the TM Sisters in video installation, sculpture, collage and performance.

The TM Sisters engage with refraction, the bending of light and sound waves as they travel through different mediums. In Prismavolt, these mediums include natural elements, the body, creative practice, and human consciousness, and occur at sites as intimate as molecular anatomy and as mysterious as the deep sea. The artists use refraction to map moments of tranquility between emergent subjectivities and the invisible forces at work upon them.

Four wading figures become engulfed by mother-of-pearl irisation. It is a kinetic conversation between bodies and waves, an exchange of power, a brilliant photometeor. The iridescence is the result of film shot and projected through prisms. Like Goethe’s phenomenological inquiry into color, for which Newton’s optical spectrum is but one case study among boundless potential experiences, the TM Sisters pursue a generous interpretation of light’s manifestations and energies. In destabilizing light, the artists also complicate ontological views of creativity, calling instead upon aesthetic irruptions that are anarchical, autopoietic, prismatic.

In another film, a chandelier prism obscures the face of a figure while its hair blows freely in the wind. "There is no nature," Derrida writes, "only the effects of nature: denaturalization or naturalization."[1] Prismavolt takes place in the perpetual becoming of these effects. Nature, the artists demonstrate, is simultaneously refraction, body, and environment. When, in a third film, the outstretched arms of two figures sink spinning into the evening ocean, it is catharsis. Such clarity does not belong to a stagnant hierarchy of achievement, but rather to transversal cuts across planes remade new through simultaneous experiences.

Prismavolt’s attunement to the relationship between body and spirit is informed by the artists’ training in neurokinetic therapy and prismatic healing methods. The TM Sisters rethink the rainbow with a new pallet of colors correlating to experiences of consciousness reached by muscle-testing. Artworks in collage and sculpture exaggerate the aesthetic geometry of refraction. Prismavolt is not only a material exhibition, but also an institutional performance in conversation with Deleuze and Guattari’s project of schizoanalysis, an imminent meta-modeling of subjectivity. In contrast to psychoanalysis, schizoanalysis aims not to reduce and interpret, but rather to expand and produce.

In the legacy of Flavin, the TM Sisters explore light as a medium. In the spirit of Bas Jan Ader, they launch themselves across the other skin of the ocean. After Kandinsky, they advocate art’s agency in synesthetic spirituality. Perhaps Prismavolt’s deepest resonance, however, is with the Swedish Space Corporations’s 2010 project PRISMA, which launched two synchronized satellites in order to test formation flying and rendezvous technologies. After two months of maneuvering as one, the satellites separated from each other for the first time. How free is refraction? How discursive is color? How fixed is subjectivity? Light and sound, air and water, duel satellites, or the artists’ collaborative duo does not represent a movement beyond the borders of the body, but a movement of the borders themselves.

Enjoy ‘Beat The Clock’ Specials: $2 from 6 to 7pm; $3 from 7 to 8pm; and $5 8 to 9pm! The event is part of a new art walk series featuring complimentary Duvel Single and Sparky’s Roadside Barbeque at Gramps Bar. Please RSVP: rsvp@workshopcollective.com.

Duvel Single is the lighter golden ale from Duvel. The secret behind the crisp and complex flavors of Duvel Single is Duvel’s commitment to using only the best quality ingredients, and in the complicated and specific brewing and refermentation process that takes more than three months to complete. Once brewed, the brew master and his staff taste each batch after approximately 30 days. At this stage the beer is called “single-fermented.” The beer has Duvel taste but the alcohol and carbonation are lower and the taste is lighter and crisper.

Tree Planting and Maintenance at historic Miami City Cemetery 9/7/13

Tree Planting & Maintenance at historic Miami City Cemetery
Sat, Sept 7, starting at 8:30 am and should be finished by Noon
treemendousMiami City Cemetery
1800 NE 2nd Ave
Miami, FL
Plenty of parking inside the gate.

If you’d like to let us know you’re coming, you can do so by clicking here.

After an excellent project at the Miami City Cemetery in August,  we will be returning there on the morning of Sat, Sept 7 to complete our work by planting additional flowering trees and shrubs – as well as maintenance and fertilizing of our many existing trees in order  to get them in top condition.

Our goal has been to return this property to an oasis of urban greenery and a defacto botanical garden. TREEmendous Miami has been pursing this very worthwhile endeavor for years, and we hope  a well-attended push on Sept 7 can finish the project.

Kudos to our President, Penny Lambeth, and to TREEmendous board member George Childs for being the leaders of this effort, but heartfelt thanks are extended to all of the many board members and volunteers of TREEmendous Miami who have worked to make this a reality. Special thanks are due Gary Hunt and Lenny Goldstein for their tireless work behind the scene to help make this project a success.

As always, we will provide refreshments for our volunteers as well as some tools. Please wear appropriate clothing for sun protection and, if you have them, please bring a shovel, rake and/or loppers. It would also be very helpful if you can bring a wheel barrow. All planting and maintenance materials will be on site.

You do not need to RSVP, but please come join us to accomplish this important work and have some fun at the same time. Please also bring any family members and friends who also love trees and want to make Miami greener and more environmentally healthy. This is also a fine project to include children as the Cemetery is fenced and protected from traffic.

This is a great project for senior high students needing Community Service hours. Verification certificates will be provided.

Recommended attire includes closed toe shoes, lightweight long pants & long sleeve shirt, shade hat and sunscreen.

“La Rueda” In Limited Edition Reproduction.

“La Rueda” is originally Humberto Benitez’s representation of the Cuban salsa-styled dance. The piece captures the moments before the partners change and the dancers spin, and through that anticipation of change, gives an expansive impression, as if the dancers could do anything; even come off the canvas and pull an on looker into their celebration.

17th Americas Food and Beverage Show 10/28/13-10/29/13

17th Americas Food and Beverage Show

AFnB2013_logoMiami Beach Convention Center
1901 Convention Center Dr ,
Miami Beach, Florida 33139

Cost: $25 – $45

The vibrant and diverse cultures of Latin America and the Caribbean take center stage at the World Trade Center Miami’s 17th Americas Food and Beverage Show Oct. 28 and 29 with more than 500 top food producers from 23 countries, each showcasing their top products, recipes and delicacies.

The 17th Americas Food and Beverage Show at the Miami Beach Convention Center is the largest specialty food trade event in the Western Hemisphere and is expected to generate more than $200 million in actual and projected sales. The show generated $190 million in sales in 2012 and attracted 9,500 buyers to the two-day show.

“By all accounts, this will be the most successful event in show history. We expect more than 10,000 people to visit the show and pursue trade opportunities with local companies and businesses throughout the Americas,” said Charlotte Gallogly, president of the World Trade Center Miami.
The 17th Americas Food and Beverage Show will feature more than 500 booths filled with specialty products from every corner of the globe, including country pavilions representing Algeria; Argentina; Bolivia; Brazil; Brazil/Goias; Canada/Atlantic Canada; Colombia; Ecuador; Peru; South Korea; Thailand; Turkey; and the United States.
NASDA will host the USA Pavilion (www.nasdatradeshows.org) with 90 small businesses. DeWitt Ashby, NASDA’s tradeshow director, and his team spend the months leading up to the show recruiting companies and pre-arranging meetings with buyers, suppliers and potential customers.

“A lot of companies have some really cool products but they lack the critical mass to take those products to bigger markets like Mexico and Canada,” DeWitt said. “The Caribbean and Latin America are the perfect fit for their export business.”

The Illinois Department of Agriculture recruits an average of 13 exhibitors a year to attend the Americas Food and Beverage Show. The results have been profitable for those that make the trip to South Beach.
Last year, 12 Illinois-based companies attended the show and generated $1.9 million in sales, with an additional $2 million in sales still pending.

“Our return on investment is 207 to 1,” said Kim Hamilton, an international marketing representative for the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

Hamilton says the Americas Food and Beverage Show remains the best venue for companies eager to strike up export deals in the Western Hemisphere.

“This is the largest food and beverage show that targets the western hemisphere. And since most of the exports are going though Miami because it’s a leading distribution center, it makes sense, for them to participate in the show,” she said.

The show also features the 8th Annual Chefs Competition featuring international teams competing for cash prizes and the title of “Best Chef of the Americas”. Visitors will also be able to take advantage of two days of business seminars geared to restaurants and food retailers.

The 17th Americas Food and Beverage is a trade-only event that is closed to the general public. Attendee registration is open throughout the show at www.americasfoodandbeverage.com.

The Panama Canal was opened in January of 1914. By December of 2010, the Panama Canal has had over 1,000,972 ship transits through it, delivering over 8,587,711,605 tons of goods worldwide.

Upon completion of the new third lock system, scheduled to be in operation by early 2015 much larger ships (12,600 TEU = 1,400 ft. length by 160 ft. width) will be able to pass through on their way to our PortMiami. These larger ships allow for the delivery of containers at greatly reduced rates due to the sheer scale of delivery capacity the new vessels have to divide the cost of transportation over.

[Description]

On Sunday September 8th, we will feature our first Graffiti artist for the program. Erni Vales, one of our most avid supporters of the program will be celebrating his birthday and presenting some of his favorite pieces….over 90 pieces will be part of his digital media exhibition.

EVLworld

EVLworld is the brainchild o f visual artist Erni Vales or, Erni Vales Lt d. (EVL). It is the culmination of cons i s ten t mural, design and artwork for over 3 decades. In that time Vales traveled internationally, created sets for celebrities, designed restaurants and nightclubs and is still regarded as one of the world ‘s leading innovators and pioneer s of the graffiti and street art movement.

EVLworld studio in Miami is the current headquarters and the home for his most recent feat , “An Unusual Journey” where he created 13 paintings a month for 13 months, 169 in total, paintings that combine graffiti to pop to poster style i n a colorful blast of color and thought provoking themes and ideas.

Photo s are available on request but EVLworld i s 1 step beyond that. Images of the paintings are available to anyone printed on a wide assortment of merchandise and clothing! Puzzles, coffee mugs , coasters, iphone cases, journals all adorned with Vales’ powerful imagery from his paintings begin the moderately priced merchandise and limited edition prints on aluminum for the more serious art collectors are all made available at EVLworld as we ll as www.evlworld.com

” I wanted to base EVLworld to be like my fellow artist and close friend Keith Haring ‘s Pop Shop. Keith was instrumental in inspiring me and proving that art collectors come in many sizes and shapes as well as different financial brackets.”

In a time where budget cutbacks across the nation continue to erode creativity from our culture and schools, Vales and EVLworld want to bring art, color and creativity back and inspire others to see their own artistic potentials.

Asociacion Emergencia Ayacuho  (AEA) is a non profit organization that raises funds to support orphan children by providing them shelter and education in Ayacucho, one of the poorest regions in Peru.

AEA, a non-profit association, was founded in 1985 in response to the growing number of orphaned children that survived terrorist attacks in Ayacucho during Peru’s most tumultuous political years. 26 years since its inception AEA has cared for more than 500 children from the city of Ayacucho by providing them proper education, basic needs and the inspiration to become upstanding citizens of Ayacucho.  The same mission that aimed to rescue children in dire need for basic care during a state of emergency in Ayacucho, now allows AEA to fully sponsor six entire orphanages in Ayacucho who depend on our support.

With the help of our sponsors,  in 2012, AEA sent $20,000 to our five orphanages including funds from our “Godparent” program, an annual gift commitment that pairs a sponsor with a child living from one of our orphanages.

A dance-theater performance by New York-based artist Yesenia Selier and her troupe, inspired in the traditions of the female orishas of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, the ancestors of Cuba’s Afro-descendant population. ORISHAS uses dance, music and tradition to reflect on the struggles and circumstances of women today.

Yesenia Selier’s passionate interpretation of Cuban dances is already well-known. She highlights and blends both Iberian and African roots of the island’s varied music and dance repertoire. Born in Havana, Selier holds an MA in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from New York University, and is the recipient of fellowships from CLASCO and the CUNY Caribbean Exchange Program of Hunter College.

She has been recognized for preserving Latino heritage by the "Save Latin America Organization". Her work on Afro Cuban culture, encompassing dance, music and race identity, has been published in her native Cuba, the U.S. and Brazil. In 2011, she founded the Ibiono Cultural Association, with master percussionist Román Díaz, and presently teaches at the Center for African and Diaspora Dance in New York City. This will be ORISHAS premiere performance.

The Cuban Museum and the Koubek Center of Miami Dade College are proud to join efforts in this program, which is part of the series Sweet Home Museo Cubano. The event is funded by an Arts Challenge Grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and a grant from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. Additional support is provided by Memorial Plan; the Koubek Center; Bank of America; Centro Cultural Español; ArtesMiami; and individual contributions from Friends of the Cuban Museum.

Locust Projects is pleased to announce the Members-only ticket pre-sale for our annual Smash & Grab Fundraiser. This year’s event will celebrate the organizations’ 15th Anniversary. There are only as many Smash Raffle tickets as artworks, and they always sell-out!

How it works: There is no other fundraiser quite like this one. The event revolves around a raffle, for which over one hundred local, national and international artists have donated artwork — enough so that each raffle ticket is guaranteed to win an artwork. Tickets are drawn at random during the party, with the winner getting their choice of artwork (i.e, first called gets first pick, and so on). The result is a fun way to place artwork into collections, connect with Miami’s art community, and support Locust Projects.

Help get Miami’s new Transit Action Committee (aka the TrAC) off the ground! Join our official launch party at Blackbird Ordinary on Thursday, September 5th starting at 6 pm.

We’ll be joined by special guests & speakers Katy Sorenson, president & CEO of the Good Government Initiative, and Carol Coletta, new VP for community & national initiatives at Knight Foundation.

The party is free to attend, and contributions to help us launch TrAC are welcomed! Contribute online here: www.tracmiami.org/contribute.

We have all complained about traffic, inadequate bus and rail systems, unsafe bike lanes, unsafe pedestrian conditions and so on. It’s time we do something about it. Our elected officials will not lead on this issue if we don’t stand up and force them to make transit a priority.

Recently, we have gotten together as transit advocates and started a Political Committee called TrAC, which is short for Transit Action Committee. We seek to shift how voters in Miami think about development, traffic, and growth. Our message and work focuses on moving away from an auto-centered mentality towards realizing a long-term vision for a city where people enjoy independence, reliability and choice around mobility.

Please join us for TrAC’s kick-off event. Attendance is free, and donations encouraged.

TrAC will help create a more economically competitive, environmentally sustainable and equitable Miami. We will educate our elected officials in the only way they’ll listen – by creating a voting constituency that will vote and contribute in local elections.

The Related Group is sponsoring “Pop Up Piano Miami” concert series across Miami’s hottest neighborhoods. Pianos painted by artists, set up all over town – in Brickell, Midtown and Beach, will feature performances by top current artists to be announced. Pop up Piano is non-profit that helps arts programming in the city.

Pop-Up Piano Miami (PUPM), a public arts project created by Uniting Local Artists, is back for its third edition during the week of Art Basel Miami Beach (December 5 – 8, 2013). This PUPM has big plans which will be announced soon. Every year PUPM brings to light a unique organization that promotes the transformational power of music in a community. Keeping in line with PUPM’s mission, the executive committee has selected Guitars Over Guns Organization (GOGO) as the 2013 beneficiary.

Guitars Over Guns provides after-school mentoring to at-risk youth through music education and performance as an alternative to the gang recruitment, drugs, and violence typically dominating their environments. GOGO targets the most vulnerable middle-schoolers, pairing them with professional musicians who use contemporary music as a means to teach young people the skills to be successful both in and out of school. GOGO is partnered with Communities in Schools of Miami (CIS), the largest dropout prevention organization in the country, which selects the schools most in-need of the program, provides mentor-training, and helps provide the students with instruments and a multitude of services to ensure their success.

The goal of PUPM 2013 is to support future PUPM community endeavors and GOGO’s programming. In order to reach this year’s goal, PUPM will host a series of events during the famed art week including a Pre-Art Week Preview Mixer, a pop-up performance at a surprise location, and a Special Benefit Concert. The ticketed, concert-style event will feature three recognized musical acts. Event goers will have the opportunity to enjoy the performances of a mainstream musician, indie musician, and a local Miami musician.

Miami Culinary Tours in South Beach-Great experience for tourists as well as locals alike By Betty Alvarez

I have always heard of Miami Culinary Tours as lovers of food who are new or old to the area walk to different restaurants to taste a piece of Miami’s gastronomic delights. It was not until recently that I got to join this savory tour that really opened my eyes on Miami and its rich culinary history.

First stop: 660 at the Angler’s- I arrived late at the first stop. The restaurant served fresh ceviche and tiradito. For my fellow walkers, it was a great start as it refreshed them as we walked in the hot Miami sun.

2nd Stop: Bolivar Restaurant. We stopped by this Colombian restaurant where each table in our area already had a Reposo cocktail mixed with Colombian beer and a small plate with one empanada colombiana (a deep fried crunchy corn Colombian patty stuffed with shredded beef and potatoes) and Patacones de Pollo (deep fried green plantains topped with shredded chicken with a hot sauce on the side. The sauce was a little bit too much to handle given that I am Peruvian and thank goodness the cold cocktail made it better. However for my fellow table foodies they preferred to be without it. But it was all good and tasty. Our tour guide Anna explained the various other Colombian cuisines that included la bandeja paisa; a typical fusion cuisine Colombian dish containing an oversized amount of food and the wide variety of ingredients, which prevent it from being served on a single regular plate, so it must be served in a platter or a tray. Yum!

In between some stops our tour guide talk about some of the historic buidings of Miami Beach such as the architecture of the Art Deco Hotel and one of the most famous photographed places in the world, the Versace Mansion while we all cooled off in the shade.

3rd Stop: David’s Cafe. This is one of the famous historic Cuban quick stop in Miami Beach. We were greeted by Pastelitos de Guayaba (Guava Pastries) and the famous Cafecito Cubano (Cuban Coffee). It was delish and for my fellow tour friends who were from Ohio it was nothing that they never tasted before. They never had Cuban coffee therefore it was great to see them enjoying a taste of Miami and Cuban history.

4th Stop: Larios on the Beach. After our tour guide Anna told us the history of Cardozo Hotel and how the Estefan Family built their empire in the culinary world, we strolled to Larios on the Beach Pop Up location inside the Cardozo Hotel. Their old location on the 800 block of Ocean Drive is currently being remodeled. Their smaller but yet popular place still serves the same delicacy. Due to the fact that we were all hot from our walking tour our waiter quickly severed us a tall glass of water while some of the fellow foodies ordered cocktails. A good basket of Cuban flattened bread served out of the oven was also brought to our table. Minutes later a small tasting plate of Ropa Vieja (shredded beef), Platanos Maduros (Sweet plantains), Arroz moro (White rice mixed with black beans) came to our table. Delish! This good serving of food was the highlight of our tour. It was overwhelmed with the array of flavors.

As we were going to our fifth stop, we headed to Deco Drive Cigars where Anna was explaining the history of the store as the Cuban cigar maker was sitting inside near the window for everyone to see how he made the cigars. Some of my fellow friends even went inside to buy them. To cool off from the dreaded heat, the rest of us headed almost next door to the Z hotel as we saw a good game of human chess in a lounge area located directly below the pool. If you look up you can see the pool area where some the kid swimmers said hi to us as they had some fun swimming in the depths of the pool.

5th stop: Jerry’s Famous Deli. Haven’t been here for over 2 years, the place has not changed. Formerly the gay disco nightclub Warsaw Ballroom in the 90’s, this deli came to be one of the famous pit stop for a good deli sandwich or meal. A sweet treat was served to us: Raspberry Rugala which is a delicious Jewish pastry.

6th Stop: Blocks Pizza Deli. Located in Washington Avenue, this small and quaint family-owned pizzeria makes delicious pizzas one “block” at a time. They only allow the freshest ingredients, organic seasonal produce, all natural deli meats sliced before you and homemade sauces to top the delicately baked crust. Other than pizzas, they cover all sorts of other cravings with home baked Blocks Pockets and freshly made Salads that also come in a delicious crispy Pocket. For our group experience the owner himself made the Sun-dried Hippie Block Pocket made out of sun-dried tomatoes, feta cheese, baby Spinach, basil pesto, and Kalamata olives. It’s like eating a pocket sandwich. Delish! All healthy and organic. Just the way I like it.

7th and last stop: Milani Gelateria. We headed to the beautiful and lovely Espanola Way where we strolled through the pedestrian walkway looking at all the quaint restaurants until we hit our last stop of the tour, Milani Gelateria. Authentic Italian Gelato. They showed off their gelato machine that contained the sweet and cool treat featuring a pinwheel of different flavors. OMG! We were all hot and could not wait to try a taste of heaven. I had the tropical gelato and it was sweet and creamy. It was a great ending to a hot day where we all learned great things during the food tour.

All in all, we hit seven stops, tried food from all over the country, mingled with people (mainly tourists) from all over the world, and as a local, I felt like a tourist. What a great afternoon and a great experience! I recommend that you should try it out!

MUSIC BY:
Benji Candelario
Benji Candelario has sustained his presences as one of the foremost DJ/Producer’s ever to grace the scene. Spanning all genres of club music, his signature sound captures the essence of the culturally vibrant New York club scene, distinguishing him as a quintessential DJ, and visionary producer/musician. Developing an impeccable reputation internationally with some of biggest names in the industry, his productions have had more aliases than Smith and Jones, … Station Q, Bass Hit, The Element, Swing 52, New Hippie Movement, and Central Park. But whatever the name, Candelario’s fans can always tell who’s behind that trademark beat chugging, bass line driven, anthem praising, dance floor dominating sound that has been acclaimed timeless by many of his peers.

His latest venture Transitori Music, an extension of his production company 2nd color Entertainment, is Candelario’s own digital imprint. His mission is to release forward-thinking music from a diverse roster of up and coming artist. Rather than concentrating on a specific style, Candelario aims to have a platform where he can truly express creative freedom through a varied selection of music. So far it has proven true, having licensed several of his past releases to the likes of Ministry of Sound and several other European and Japanese labels.

Though his many productions have been praised around the world, Benji is always quick to point out his roots. He is a DJ foremost that produces records and not a producer that now DJs. He is in his element playing the hottest clubs (from the dark, underground spots to the big rooms) in Ibiza, Greece, UK, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Canada and the U.S.

Without compromising his expansive knowledge and exquisite taste, his style remains fun and accessible. When Benji plays he takes care to bring his listeners with him on his musical journey and makes sure they stay with him the whole party through. It has always been important to him that people understand and enjoy his unique musical point of view, making him a favorite with promoters and club goers alike.

His first release was in 2001 on Yoruba Records with a remix of Erro’s ‘Change For Me.’ The record’s great success came from its unique fusion of broken beat and soul-drenched deep house, earning it future classic status. From that point on, he had been involved in numerous projects such as Open Aire, which was featured earlier this year on the popular BBC television drama, ‘The Syndicate.’ Additionally, Mikkel has set forth plans to launch his label BTWN SPKRS to serve as an outlet for music producers alike. “Tea” is a film essay documenting artist Mario Garcia Torres’s journey to One Hotel in Kabul, Afghanistan, a hotel opened in 1971 by Italian conceptual artist Alighiero Boetti (b. 1940–d. 1994). The hotel closed due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Garcia Torres considers his relationship to Boetti’s work and life through a subjective blurring of time and geography.

This screening is part of a series of public programs that contextualizes the work of artists who have been commissioned to create new projects that will debut with the opening of Pérez Art Museum Miami in December 2013. This program marks Mario Garcia Torres’ first visit to Miami while working on a new project for PAMM.

Local Artist Profiles: Laelanie Larach

Artist Laelanie Larach

Get to know Laelanie Larach An artist who is entranced by the melodies of silence.

By: Tatiana Enriquez

Ansel Adams once said, “When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.”  Local artist Laelanie Larach shares in this philosophy. She dances within the spaces, colors and melodies of silence. Letting it guide her to uncover beauty and to create her multifaceted and polyrhythmic works of art.

More about Laelanie:

Laelanie Larach Nieves was born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. A self-taught artist, she created her first masterpiece at age 15 titled “Mysterious Forrest”. As she matured as an artist, she began changing her style of painting and achieved an innovative style where she was able to combine her two passions; photography and painting. She blended the two in single, trio-dimensional artworks. Her work tells a story that begins at the center of her pieces. This story is then framed, or surrounded by another segment of the canvas with a touch of fantasy and surrealism. The center piece is almost always completely oil paint, giving it a surreal glossy enamel base dripping effect which is reflective of the lines and tones of the central piece and concept. In other works, she only uses oil on canvas in both the center piece and surrounding piece. When one looks closely at each artwork, we can see that she doesn’t follow any specific pattern.

Recently, she has  participated in two fundraising events; “Covers for the Cold”, a Fundraiser benefiting Camillus House (camillushouse.org) in Miami and the expo-sale “Arte y la Paz ” for Fundacion Sampedrana Del Nino in her native Honduras. She says “I always try to support social works and foundations who wish to work with me, to expose my works. I support people with very basic art talent or who are starting, advising and giving tips for their artistic development. My experience in the industry overcame obstacles, and I contribute with my artistic knowledge, helping to promote new talent in this field.”

So what advice does she give new, emerging local artists in Miami? She says, “The first word that goes through my mind on this question is PERSEVERANCE. Never lose faith in your dreams and always believe in what you do. In Art, there are no barriers stopping you from achieving your essence as an artist. Just go for it!  Don’t think twice when you have an opportunity.”

So what’s next for Laelanie? She says, “I’m focused on Art Basel season. My next goal is to share my new collection, in which I’m putting all my effort so I hope everyone will enjoy it!”  Be sure to check out her artworks at ART CENTER WYNWOOD (149 NW 36 ST Wynwood Florida 33127) during Art Basel 2013 (Dec. 5-8 2013) till the end of December.

The mission of Tree of Life is to teach underprivileged and homeless teens and pre-teens (ages 10-17), how to take an idea for a play from its seedling phase to the stage. Using the power of story, autobiography, and the art of collaboration, students will learn what it means to workshop a play. Some will take on the role of set designer, others of costume; some will be actors, others directors. Some will even help with the production and the public relations aspect of production. All the while, students will be working with professionals in the field — working actors, writers, directors, producers. Often, these workshops take place as summer seminars and/or year-long conservatories that can be out of reach for low earning or poverty level families. We believe that everyone should have access to art and everyone should have the right to make art, if the passion lies within. Even if that passion has been, thus far, unrecognized. It is our goal to make that desire to create bloom; to illustrate, through hard work, the power of art — whether that art be visual, performative, or musical . Because art does, indeed have power — the power to change people and change the world through empathy, thought, and catharsis.

When you arrive at the main entrance, just tell the doorman that you are here to see Lucas Monsalve. You don’t need to (and shouldn’t) say anything about a “party” or “art show.” You’re just “here to see Lucas.” ;)

Facebook Event Invite Page for “Art Will Save You” Series:
https://www.facebook.com/events/639861142692413/

Over 250 pieces of art will be on display and available for sale at a series of Saturday night private art shows that will take place in September, on the 14th, 21st, and 28th of the month.

The three private art shows, located at a private residence in downtown Miami, are scheduled to run from 7pm until 12am each night and are open to art buyers and art appreciators of all ages who RSVP with an email to privateartshow@gmail.com.

All RSVP emails must state (1) the number of people in the party (2) full names for everyone in the party (3) the date of the show they’d like to attend, and (4) time of arrival (between 7pm and 12am). Within 24 hours you will receive an email response to confirm your RSVP and reservation that will contain the address for the event and information for parking, directions, etc. Please include a phone number to receive a text message reminder the day of the event.

All attendees for all three private art shows will receive one free art print (while supplies last). Limited free refreshments will be available. Admission is free. Donations are appreciated. Most of the art on display will be priced between $10 and $50, with a few pieces priced between $300 and $500, and one piece that is $2,000, so there is something for everyone and everyone’s individual budgets.

All of the art on display is the work of Renda Writer, a known figure on the South Florida arts scene for almost a decade. Renda has played many roles in the local art scene, including spoken word poet, art magazine vice president and chief editor, as well as producer, host, and promoter of art and music events and open mic nights. He added “visual artist” to the list of roles he plays when he first started making art in late 2010, or, as Renda puts it, “I started making art when everything else stopped making sense. Art became my catharsis when everything I knew started to shift.” After nearly three years of creating, Renda is now ready to exhibit his entire body of work.

Most of the art on display will be what Renda Writer calls his “Handwritten Found Object Art.” This is his own personal take on the found object art genre. He writes on what he finds… a BMW hubcap, an air conditioning vent, a few metal reel-to-reel plate, some random street signs, a calendar from the salon industry, tons of furniture wood, chunks of drywall, some old records, a ceiling tile, a kitchen cabinet door. These are just some of the things that Renda has repurposed with the written word. He uses various colors of paint markers, and writes poems, phrases, aphorisms, and stream of consciousness musings that convey ideas and themes of wit, hope, humor, and curiosity.

In addition to the “Handwritten Found Object Art,” Renda will also be exhibiting three other styles of art, which include (1) his line of “Renda Writer Jewelry,” words and ideas written on necklace charms, (2) pieces from his original “Handwritten Art” series from 2010-2011, framed sheets from a small yellow legal pad, covered with poetry and stream of consciousness thoughts, all written in blue ink, in his signature small handwritten print and (3) pieces from the “Renda Hitz Hearts” collection, an ongoing collaboration project with his friend, Billy Hitz, where the two men create eye-catching heart-shaped pieces of art and interior design accents out of carpet.

Renda is naming the private art show series “Art Will Save You” because, as he says, “Art has saved me in many ways… ways I can’t even really explain. To me, that’s what art does. It saves you. It saves the artist who makes it, the people who view it, and the people who buy it and incorporate it into their homes, and their lives. It changes you, influences you, inspires you, and… saves you.”

Join us for a happy hour, panel & brainstorm: How can we make Miami a healthier place to live?

We’re hoping the answer is mamey milkshakes.
Join us for a happy hour, panel discussion and brainstorm.

We’re doing this one in concert with Knight Foundation, the University of Miami Life Sciences & Technology Park, and Lift1428. Knight Foundation just announced that the next Knight News Challenge, an annual contest on media innovation, will focus on health, with this question: “How can we harness data and public information for the health of communities?”

So, we’re making that question local with a happy hour, panel discussion and brainstorm. We’ll start with drinks and food and share a bit about the News Challenge contest opportunity. Then we’ll hear from a great panel of local experts including doctors, entrepreneurs, administrators and community health advocates about the opportunities to improve the health of our city and county.

Finally, we’ll do the best part— brainstorm ideas for small health projects we can do together.

Hope to see you there. We promise good people and good ideas.

Color Me Wrong at Color Mob 5K

We love unique events and were long overdue for some much-needed exercise so we thought we would check out the Color Mob 5K at Oleta River State Park this past Saturday August 17th. The Color Mob is basically a 5K combined with the Holi Festival (Indian Festival of Color).  So imagine this — as you are running your course, you come across multiple stations where people throw colored powder at you. Sounds like it could be a blast, right?  It was… an incredibly annoying blast. We were assured prior to the race that the powder washed off easily, which turned out to be an utter fucking lie. This powder was a c*nt and a half to wash off. First, we tried regular water while at the park and that didn’t work.  Then once we got home we tried soap, then a sugar scrub, then deep cleansing shampoo, then rubbing alcohol and finally astringent (which worked the best to clean up the last few traces).  Thank-the-Lord we were able to help scrub each other. Even then, it took well over an hour to get it all off.  We felt bad for other participants who were not lucky enough to have someone to scrub them.  On the bright side, it turned into a nice little beauty day complete with mani-pedis to literally clip and scrub the blue from under our nails.

Video of one of the Color Stations

Before you participate in any events like this be sure to consider a few things:

  • Make sure that you do not wear anything you wouldn’t want stained.
  • Consider whether or not you’re okay with some of the powder coming into contact with your vehicle.
  • Contact past participants and make sure that the colors wash off easily.

So yeah, it sounds like a great idea in theory…. just make sure to plan accordingly. :)

Gabriel Iglesias Cracks up Magic City Casino

Gabriel Iglesias Cracks up Magic City Casino

Magic City Casino has turned into quite a stupendous spot, hosting fun, delectable and hilarious events. Gabriel Iglesias is on the road and brought his favorite stand-ups from “Stand-Up Revolution” with him. We caught up with Gabriel Iglesias (a.k.a. Fluffy not Fluffer) at the Stage 305 there and fell in love with this cake-fingering comedic treasure. The Stage 305 was set up with stadium seating and table seating accommodating 758 people. There was even Miami-esque VIP section with tables and bottle service right in front of the stage.

Gabriel spent the first half of the show delivering his uproariously funny, all new material. In the second half, of the show he fielded requests for some of his classics jokes, which were great as well. Note to comedy show patrons: Please do not scream out the comedian’s punch lines. The comedians hate it and you ruin the joke for everyone. Jokes can still be funny the second or third time around, even without audience participation.

In the past year, Magic City Casino has hosted some fun and reasonably priced events like the Ultimate Miami Food Truck Competition, the Ultimate Miami Comedian, Rob Schneider and now Gabriel Iglesias.  In the coming months, they will also host Blues Traveler, Carlos Mencia, Lynrd Skynrd, Kansas and  the 3-Day Ultimate Miami contests to crown the Ultimate Miami Band hosted by the Gin Blossoms, Ultimate Miami Bartender hosted by Tracy Morgan and Ultimate Miami Voice hosted by Expose.  We are looking forward to all these and many more to come.

Make sure to keep Magic City Casino’s event page in your bookmarks.

Announcing the First Annual “Pink Flamingo Awards” for Community Excellence 9/17/13

Announcing the First Annual “Pink Flamingo Awards” for Community Excellence
Tuesday, 09/17/2013 – 12:00 pm – 02:00 pm
Pink-Flamingo-AwardsPalm Ballroom of the Miami Beach Convention Center
1901 Convention Center Drive,
Miami Beach, Florida 33139

Cost: $60

The LGBT Visitor Center will present the first annual “Pink Flamingo Awards” to honor 10 people and organizations that have made Miami Beach one of the top 20 places to visit among LGBT tourists, according to The Advocate magazine. Karen Brown, executive director of the LGBT Visitor Center, made the announcement calling the “Pink Flamingo Awards” a similar concept to the People’s Choice Awards because the winners will be voted on by tourists who have visited the Center as well as locals who frequent the Center for community events and activities. The awards are sponsored by American Airlines, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Tourist Board of Curacao and will be held Tuesday, September 17, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Palm Ballroom of the Miami Beach Convention Center.

In addition to the awards, the luncheon will honor past and present city leaders who supported the LGBT Visitor Center concept and paved the way for the MDGLCC Foundation to lease the first floor of Old City Hall to house both the LGBT Visitor Center and the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Among those being recognized are Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower, the Miami Beach City Commission and former City Commissioners Saul Gross and Victor Diaz who were instrumental in the opening of the LGBT Visitor Center almost three years ago.

“Many people in the community don’t realize that the LGBT Visitor Center is a stand-alone organization under the non-profit MDGLCC Foundation,” said Brown. “We are partially funded by grants for the work that we do to serve our tourists and our community, but we need the community’s support to raise funds to bridge the gap between what we need and what the grants don’t cover. So many locals enjoy the programming at the Center and so many local non-profits benefit from us being here that I honestly think we should change the name of the place to the ‘LGBT Visitor and Community Center’.”

The Pink Flamingo Awards will be a truly interactive experience, according to Brown. Not only will supporters of the LGBT Visitor Center select the winners of the awards, but also the event will feature a unique, interactive silent auction to help raise funds for the Center’s operations. Included in the silent auction will be a trip for two to Las Vegas including accommodations at the Cosmopolitan Resort, original artwork by David Bromstad, a Regions Bank bicycle, a gift certificate from the Art of Shaving, and more.

Finalists for the Pink Flamingo Awards were chosen by a secret blue-ribbon panel of experts, according to Brown. Voters from around the world will determine the winners based on the ballots cast at www.gogaymiami.com and everyone is encouraged to vote for his or her favorites. Winners will be announced at the luncheon.

Tickets to the Pink Flamingo Awards luncheon are $60 each which includes lunch, a gift bag and a raffle ticket for the grand prize drawing of two tickets on American Airlines and a four-night stay at the Sandton Kurá Hulanda Hotel in Curacao, courtesy of the Curacao Tourist Board. To purchase tickets, visit www.gogaymiami.com or call 305-397-8914.

Over 8,000 people are expected to converge at the stadium, for the first event of its kind in South Florida, on September 14th and 15th between 9:00 am – 6:00 pm. Proceeds of food & beverage from this event will go towards helping Fugees Family, a non-profit organization that helps child survivors of war rebuild their lives, one step at a time, through soccer.

The event will host a trade show, indoor soccer tournament, coaching clinics and interactive areas organized by FSE partners. Over 60 exhibitors will be present. A youth 3v3 soccer tournament will hit the pitch of six indoor soccer fields, created uniquely for this event, inside level 200 of the stadium. Event goers will experience the debut of new ground-breaking takes on soccer with global games including Futtoc, a hybrid between futbol and ping pong, Futgolf and Futwall, a new soccer game that includes DJ and music. A wide variety of soccer and sports-related products, gear and equipment, food and drink samplings, and other consumer goods and services will round out the weekend.

The Related Group Announces Baltus House

Luxury condo project to rise steps from the Design District
More than 50 percent reserved in 30 days

MIAMI (Monday, July 8) – The Related Group, in partnership with Strategic Properties, introduce Baltus House as their latest condo development in Miami, and already are reporting more than 50 percent reserved in 30 days with remarkable pricing from $199,900.

Located at 4250 Biscayne Boulevard on the cusp of the Design District, the 15-story Baltus House will face Biscayne Bay and boast unobstructed water views to the east, overlooking the prestigious Bay Point neighborhood. Looking inside, Baltus House will have a decidedly contemporary Spanish flare.

The project takes its name from Baltus Collection, the high-end, contemporary Spanish furniture company that will design interiors and furnishings for the project. Founded by designer Javier Martin, the brand is known for its clean lines, generous proportions and dynamic materials.

“An exclusive interior design from Baltus Collection will be the perfect complement to the artistic experience the building has to offer,” said Martin. “Baltus House was meticulously designed to bring residents an exquisite living experience in this one-of-a-kind project.”

Jorge Perez, Chairman and CEO of The Related Group, selected the sophisticated and contemporary design house to provide a perfect accompaniment to the elegant curved lines of the building after working with Martin on his own penthouse interiors.

Baltus House features 167 luxury condo units each to be sold with European-design kitchens, stainless steel appliances, carpet and tile flooring.

Residents of the one-, two and three-bedroom units will live steps from the Design District – Miami’s hip neighborhood dedicated to art and design, currently being transformed to be home to the biggest names in fashion design. Shops such as Cartier, Hermes, Prada, and Louis Vuitton have already opened their doors, and many more high-end brands are to come, together with an array of fine dining choices. The bustling neighborhood hosts an array of cultural events including the Art + Design Night on the second Saturday of each month where the focus is on culture, creativity, and fine cuisine. Baltus House residents will enjoy the luxury of also being close to the bustling Midtown area as well as Wynwood art district . And to enjoy the talent of some of the best young artists in the country, residents won’t have to go far as the Frank Gehry designed YoungArts campus is a short walk away. Also located close by are Downtown, Brickell, and Miami Beach.

In continuing with The Related Group’s commitment to integrating art into its buildings, common areas of Baltus House will feature art pieces from Perez’ private collection. Also on display will be artwork by Lluís Barba, a Barcelona artist, who is among Perez’ favorites, and a garage mural by Venezuelan artist Jaime Gili.

Baltus House will boast the finest of modern amenities including a 50-foot pool next to a 400 square foot reflective pool on the seventh floor overlooking Biscayne Bay and Miami Beach, an oversized whirlpool, plush chaises, pool cabanas, and outdoor club seating featuring sofas, chairs, and ottomans. In addition to a rooftop sun deck with two spas will be an outdoor lounge area with a summer kitchen and barbecue grill, all with breathtaking bay views. Baltus House will have a state-of-the-art fitness center with professional-grade cardio machines, weight-training area and a yoga and Pilates area as well as a clubroom.

Groundbreaking is expected September 1, 2013.

Artists from South Florida and beyond will occupy an 8000 square foot warehouse and alternative exhibition space, creating new works that hang from the rafters, conform to, and are inspired by the unique site. Installation art, mixed media, Sculpture, Video art, and Interactive works are included.

29 artists were selected through a part juried, part invitational process. The artists are linked by their fresh approaches to the ROUGH & TUMBLE theme: “characterized by violent, random, disorderly action and struggles, unrestrained, marked by bursts of destructive force or intense activity,” and “an unorganized collection or mixture of various things, described as Raw, Textured, Volatile, and/or Arbitrary, Hybrid forms.”

The exhibition is housed within “The Projects North,” in FAT Village ARTS District, the leading exhibition space for monthly art walks in Fort Lauderdale. There will be two public receptions, on Aug. 31 & Sept. 28, as part of the monthly (4th Saturday) art walk in FAT Village, which spans 4 square blocks and is populated with artist’s studios, galleries & other creative businesses. To see images of a few previous exhibits in the space, go to http://www.fatvillageprojects.com/

The closing reception for Rough & Tumble, on Oct. 5, will be part of the 4th Annual ART FALLOUT Event. ART FALLOUT is a collaboration between Girls Club Art Collection, 1310 Gallery, The Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, FAT Village Arts District, 3rd Avenue artists, and other local venues. There will be a shuttle bus rotating between each of these locations. Multiple venues will host their own new art exhibitions simultaneously for one night, and all events will be FREE, and open to the public. ART FALLOUT venues are unified in the mission to bring greater awareness to the thriving art scene within the downtown Fort Lauderdale area, as well as celebrate the Broward County Cultural Division’s designation of October as “a month for art,” supporting the production and presentation of contemporary art in the local community.

[Description]

Art and Photographic Installation #77 of ‘for artists BY ARTISTS’ presents select pieces of art by Noel Aquino and photographer Alexia Fodere. Join us for the weekly network art salon that features artist and their works in a dynamic environment that’s fused along with culinary delights and music.

Noel Aquino will be highlighting some of his personal favorite pieces while revealing his latest project.

Alexia Fodere will be unveiling her latest photographic series ‘Curves’ which features 15 photographs that gives you a different perspective on the contour of the female body.

The artists…
Artist Noel Aquino www.noelaquinoart.com
Artist Noel Aquino was born and raised in Varadero, Cuba, and now resides in Florida. When Aquino was nine years old, an artist from Varadero Community Art Center noticed his talent, and persuaded him to attend classes at the center. After two years of training, his instructors encouraged him to apply to The Matanzas School of Art. Aquino was accepted to the school, and spent the next three years there refining his creative abilities and learning about art history. Much of his time at the school was spent under the tutelage of several nationally, and internationally recognized Cuban artists.

At the age of 20, the passion of youth and a non-conformist attitude towards life were reflected in Aquino’s work, and also led him to leave Cuba for the United States. Although he produced many pieces while a young man in Cuba, it has been in the U.S. where he has created the vast majority of his body of work. Much of Aquino’s early material was of the realistic nature, and included intricately detailed landscapes, and portraits. He then moved into a surrealistic period, gradually arriving at his present style, which he describes as “contemporary modernism”.

Aquino has had numerous (solo and group) shows in the Miami, and Tampa Bay areas of Florida, and in Michigan. He has sold well over 400 pieces, and his works are part of private collections in the US, Canada, Europe, and Latin America.

Noel’s Artist Statement
Like all evolving artists I have gone through various styles and phases; my present approach to painting incorporates the components of form, space, color, and texture, resulting in works that could best be described as contemporary-modernism. I don’t begin my pieces with a sketch, or an image of something tangible in my head, instead I tap into very basic internal emotions, and incorporate those inner perspectives into my process, effectively using my paint and brush, to translate and record, the “language of my mind” onto the canvas. This is not however, to say that I don’t use my artistic skills, but that I integrate those talents into my method in combination with what flows from my subconscious. I then analyze and “play” with the canvas until I feel that a work is complete. This technique is in essence what gives life to my art.

Once I have completed a painting, the images on the canvas oftentimes evoke feelings of something familiar to the viewer- these perceptions are usually based on a particular object (or set of objects) the individual may have seen in his or her own life. And although, it is not necessarily my intent to induce these perceptions, I do realize that they are in part what draws people to my work, and connects them to the pieces. This in turn brings greater inspiration for my expression; ultimately adding to my intrinsic motivation to paint.

Alexia Fodere www.omegaeye.com
Alexia speaks……
I shape the experience of and interior space with my perception of the light, it’s intensity, it’s amplitude, and its angle. Thrusting the objects in front of my camera in its way, just as the wind would do. Also, the proper balance of the subjects plays a central role enhancing the Designer idea.

Alexia’s work has been published in: Architectural Digest, Florida Design Home & Decor, Florida Design International, Florida Design Palm Beach, Casa & Estilo, Blueprint Directory, Loft, Inside Out, Electronic House, Miami Herald Home, DIning Out and Elle Decor.

The 76TH art installation of for artists BY ARTISTS will feature one of Miami’s most “prolific” artist. Eva Ruiz will be joining us on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Haven Lounge with a digital presentation. Enjoy a night fused with music, food and art.

EVA RUIZ www.evaruizlandoflotus.com

Eva Ruiz was born in Bogota, Colombia, she spent her childhood in different cities and towns of her native country and moved to Miami at an early age. Even though she loved drawing as was a child, she decided to start her career in the arts in 2003. Wanting to find a place where she could express herself completely, she found an infinite world of possibilities when she picked up the brush, she found a part of her self that was missing. She is a self taught artist who loves to play and experiment with different mediums, porcelain, collage and jewelry.

‘Art has been a personal and spiritual journey for me, every person has a way to deal with everything that life brings, I have found that experiences that are painful, can be transformed into the most beautiful expression of love, I have grown because of them and I wish to share that transformation of energy and thought in my work. I am inspired by music, nature, love, silence… life is very inspiring when we look deeper and stay curious.

My work is focused on love and change, I choose to see the beauty around me, we need to acknowledge it and share it, change doesn’t happen by it self, we must bring it. Creation is moment of honesty and dreams, it is fueled by curiosity, imagination and infinity.’

Todd Erickson / Huahua’s Taqueria

From the creative minds that brought us Haven Lounge, comes South Beach’s new must-go-to taco restaurant, Huahua’s Taqueria. Located a few doors down from Haven, the taqueria boasts a menu filled with traditional and contemporary tacos, unique sides and enough hot sauce choices to make your head spin.

Chat Chow TV sat down with Huahua’s Executive Chef Todd Erickson to learn more about the new concept and some of the exciting dishes guests can find on the menu.

The idea for a taqueria was inspired by the concept of a ‘stationary’ food truck from one of the restaurant’s partners Mike Boels, says Erickson.

“And what goes great in food truck? Tacos.” Erickson notes. “There weren’t a lot of tacos being done on the beach at the time and we thought it would be a great addition to the neighborhood.”

Huahua’s serves up ten different types of tacos on their menu, ranging from the traditional favorites to the more unique variety, such as tacos filled with fried chicken or BBQ short ribs – and even Vegan options. Rounding out the restaurant’s whimsical menu is build-your-own nachos, grilled corn, popsicles and Mexican sodas.

And that cute mascot that is pictured throughout the restaurant? That’s Jalapeña, Boels’ chihuahua, making it only fitting that Huahuas is also very pet friendly, offering treats and water bowls for their four legged patrons.

Curious what Erickson’s favorite taco is? Or whether he prefers corn or flour tortillas? Check out the video above to find out all those details and more.
