Edouard Duval-Carrié: Imagined Landscapes

Conversation with Edouard Duval Carrié and Tobias Ostrander, March 13 at 7pm

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) will present a solo exhibition of new works by Haitian-born, Miami-based artist Edouard Duval-Carrié from March 13 to August 31, 2014. Generated over the past year, Imagined Landscapes features a series of mural-sized paintings and chandeliers, conceived as a single installation, depicting lush tropical scenes executed entirely in black and silver glitter. The exhibition will open with a conversation between Duval Carrié and PAMM Chief Curator Tobias Ostrander on March 13, 2014 at 7pm.

“Edouard Duval-Carrié has produced a very exciting new body of work with his dark “Imaginary Landscapes,” said PAMM Chief Curator Tobias Ostrander. “This suite of sparkling paintings and sculptures dialogue dynamically with the characteristics of the gallery space at PAMM, as well as with the context of tropical Miami as a Caribbean city. This series intriguingly reveals the strong influence of his recent pan-Caribbean research and outlook.”

Edouard Duval-Carrié is known for his innovative adaptions of traditional Haitian iconography, which he engages in order to address contemporary social and political conditions. Contrasting his signature use of strident colors, this new project presents works executed entirely in black and silver glitter. Involving extensive research, Imagined Landscapes presents lush tropical scenes that reference specific 19th century paintings executed in the Caribbean and Florida. These paintings, by artists such as William Heade and Frederick Church, were commissioned as part of Colonialist interests in promoting economic development of these areas of the world. The artists used pictorial effects, imagination and fictions to present the Caribbean as the “New Eden,” a fertile land of possibility. Duval-Carrié’s works translate these historical images into his own contemporary aesthetic language, in order to address the manner in which the tropics of the Caribbean and Florida continue to be sold as tropical paradises, in ways that often obscure traditional economic and social disparities that continue to be perpetuated in these contexts.

Edouard Duval-Carrié: Imagined Landscapes, organized by PAMM, is part of a season of presentations and programs focusing on Caribbean art, and celebrating Miami’s position as a Caribbean capital. On Friday, April 18, 2014, PAMM will open Caribbean: Crossroads of the World, an unprecedented juxtaposition of historical and contemporary works. Duval-Carrié’s Le General Toussaint Enfumé (General Touissant Wreathed in Smoke, or Pretty in Pink), 2003 is on view in Caribbean. Also opening April 18 is a large-scale work by Simon Starling, Inverted Retrograde Theme, USA (House for a Songbird), a recently-acquired installation that traces the paradoxes of modernist architecture in the Caribbean. A large scale installation by artist Hew Locke, a British artist of Guyanese descent, For Those in Peril on the Sea, hangs in the museum’s front entrance. Goya Foods to Serve as the Official Latin/Hispanic Foods Sponsor of the 2014 Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival Presented by FOOD & WINE

This will be Goya’s Third Year participating at the Festival
Miami Beach, Fla. (Feb. 17, 2014) – Goya Foods of Florida announced today that for the third year in a row it has joined the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival’s (SOBEWFF) roster of sponsors. The 13th annual edition of America’s favorite and largest wine and culinary extravaganza will take place Feb. 20 through 23, 2014, to benefit Florida International University’s (FIU) Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management and the Southern Wine & Spirits Beverage Management Center.

Festival attendees will have the opportunity to sample a variety of Goya products throughout the weekend event. Goya will once again participate in the Whole Foods Market Grand Tasting Village from Friday, Feb. 21 through Sunday, Feb. 23; the Fun and Fit as a Family sponsored by Carnival featuring the Goya Kidz Kitchen hosted by Robert Irvine on Saturday, Feb. 22 and Sunday, Feb. 23; and the Goya Foods’ Swine & Wine hosted by Michelle Bernstein on Sunday, Feb. 23. To offer guests a one-of-a-kind opportunity to savor the brand’s authentic Hispanic flavors at each one of the events, Goya’s Executive Chef, Fernando Desa, will showcase recipes with SOBEWFF-inspired fare. Goya has also partnered with a line-up of celebrated chefs including; Chef José Mendin, Chef Richard Ingraham, Chef Richard Plasencia and Chef Sean Brasel.

Chef José Mendin, executive chef of Miami Beach’s Pubbelly, Pubbelly Sushi and Pubbelly Steak, will be at Goya’s outpost at the Whole Foods Market Grand Tasting Village on Saturday, Feb. 22, to prepare Soft Polenta with Roasted Mushroom and Goya Huitlacoche all made with Goya Foods products and condiments. As one of the most celebrated chefs in South Beach, Chef José Mendin’s daring culinary approach showcases his talent for updating traditional recipes with modern techniques. His non-conventional tactics and distinct style have positioned his gastronomic creations as a “must-try” on Miami’s food scene.

Also joining the Whole Foods Market Grand Tasting Village on Saturday, Feb. 22 and Sunday, Feb. 23, is Goya’s Executive Chef Fernando Desa. Chef Desa, who is responsible for the research and development of new products and recipes for the company, is recognized for incorporating Latin American flavors that can easily be applied at home. This year, he will be serving an array of dishes including Asian Steamed Buns with Pulled Pork and Sofrito with Black Beans and Arugula, Crispy Aji Tuna Tartar Tacos with Aji Crema and Guava Reduction, Stuffed Sweet Plantain with Creamy Shrimp and Chorizo topped with Smoked Pimenton Aioli and Empanada a la Gallega Purse with Pineapple Soy Glaze.

For some of the younger food connoisseurs, Fun and Fit as a Family sponsored by Carnival featuring the Goya Kidz Kitchen hosted by Robert Irvine on Saturday, Feb. 22 and Sunday, Feb. 23, which will offer the ultimate family-friendly fun including healthy food tastings, physical fitness activities and star-studded healthy cooking demonstrations. Chef Richard Ingraham will showcase healthy alternatives to children’s favorites, such as Black Bean Sliders and a healthy twist to Arroz con Leche. Joining him will be Executive Chef, Richard Plasencia of Baptist Health South Florida, who will be in charge of serving the sweet fare, sharing his passion for healthy seasonal recipes. Chef Plasencia will be creating a refreshing Plantain Ginger Flan.

To end the four-day festival, Goya will take over the Biltmore Hotel for the Goya Foods’ Swine & Wine hosted by Michelle Bernstein, on Sunday, Feb. 23. Chefs Fernando Desa and Sean Brasel will be teaming up in an all-star collaboration to prepare different variations of pork. As co-owner and Executive Chef of Meat Market in Miami Beach, Chef Brasel is known for his passion, skill and creativity. Under his culinary vision and direction, Meat Market has quickly become a Miami Beach hot spot, serving steakhouse classics with a sexy, NYC-inspired vibe.
For the Swine & Wine event, the duo will be serving a “Caja China” Pork with Potato Cakes and Asian Steamed Buns with Pulled Pork and Sofrito with Black Beans and Arugula. Chefs Ingrid Hoffman and Douglas Ródriguez will also join the occasion to showcase their signature glazes, rubs and secret blends, for a mouthwatering swine feast.

Ever drive down a Miami street and wonder “why don’t they …”?

Leave A Legacy of Miami Dade on Tuesday launched the Philanthropy Miami Shark Tank, a community competition that offers the opportunity to be the change we seek. Instead of a business challenge, this shark tank seeks ideas to fulfill a community need through partnerships developed between nonprofits, businesses and/or individuals.

“Anyone or any organization or business can submit their ideas. But they can’t go it alone,” said Teresa Weintraub, co-chair of Leave A Legacy©. “Our goal is to encourage creative thinking and the creation of new collaborations and approaches to move our community forward. In other words, people have to work together.”

The process is simple: each team must submit a 500-word description about their idea by 3 p.m. Monday, March 3. A panel of pre-sharks (local business and nonprofit leaders) will select the top 10 ideas. Attendees at the Philanthropy Miami Conference on Strategic Thinking on Friday, March 21 at Jungle Island will select the top five.

The five with the most votes will move on to the final round at Philanthropy Miami Conference Day of Dynamic Ideas on Friday, March 21 at Jungle Island. The finalists will present their ideas to the Philanthropy Miami Shark Tank, a panel of five business and nonprofit executives.

The winning team and their proposal will be announced that day and be awarded $5000 to set their idea in motion.

“In the past, we focused our efforts solely on the nonprofit community. But we’ve seen wonderful collaborations between non-profits and for-profits. It really doesn’t matter who teams up, because in the end the community profits,” Weintraub said.

Individuals, non-profit organizations and businesses are invited to submit a 500-word description of the synergy that will result from a new strategic partnership and idea to help solve a specific need in our community.

Finalist Selection: A panel of Pre-Sharks will review the entries and select 8-10 finalists, which will be voted on by attendees at Philanthropy Miami, Day 1 conference on Friday, March 21. The top five move on to the final round.

Final Round/Winner Selection: The Shark Tank panel will hear from the five finalists and select a winner at Philanthropy Miami, Day 2 on April 16 at Jungle Island.
