Miami Power Players Crush Grapes to Promote VeritageMiami to Benefit United Way

The happy VIC's posing with the winner.

Five of Miami’s top business leaders went foot-to-foot crushing grapes to raise awareness for the 19th annual VERITAGEMIAMI, the annual wine, spirits and craft beer festival taking place April 9-12, 2014, benefitting the United Way of Miami. Richard D. Fain, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises and Chair of VERITAGEMIAMI, went toe-to-toe with Jorge Perez, founder of The Related Group, Philip Levine, City of Miami Beach Mayor, Hilarie Bass, shareholder and co-president of Greenberg Traurig and Allen Morris, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Allen Morris Company – all longtime United Way supporters and volunteers – on a grape crushathon. Jorge crushed the competition to secure the crown (pictured below).

In celebration of this year’s VERITAGEMIAMI, these Miami business magnates emulated Ancient Romans by crushing grapes in wooden barrels. Passersby witnessed Miami VIC’s (Very Important Crushers) getting their feet dirty in this friendly competition. Spectators also earned a chance to enter to win tickets to VERITAGEMIAMI.

VERITAGEMIAMI is where Miami’s wine and food scene comes together for a world-class experience. Through a series of year-round events, culminating in a four-day gathering, wine, spirits, beer and food lovers join with top sommeliers, notable chefs, prestigious wineries, winemakers and breweries to eat, drink and unite all for a greater purpose. Celebrating 19 years, VeritageMiami benefits United Way of Miami-Dade, supporting programs in our community that are focused on improving education, financial stability and health – the building blocks for a good life.

Kevin D’Antonio / Dolce Italian

Dolce Italian offers a contemporary take on Italian classics in the heart of Miami Beach. Located on Collins Avenue inside the Gale Hotel, the restaurant appeals to locals and visitors alike with its refined cuisine and approachable atmosphere. Chat Chow TV sat down with Dolce’s Director of Food and Beverage, Kevin D’Antonio, to learn more about the restaurant and its recent anniversary.

Dolce prides itself on preparing its cuisine in true Italian fashion complete with pastas made in-house, mozzarella that’s pulled to order and pizzas prepared in a wood burning oven.

“One of the best things about this restaurant is the moment you walk in you get a little smell of that wood burning oven,” says D’Antonio.

The year-old restaurant just added plenty of new items to its menu to celebrate its first anniversary including a new “grill” section, revamped appetizers, an expanded wine list, and a new family style Sunday dinner with dishes meant to share between four and six people.

D’Antonio feels that the Gale Hotel is a “one stop shop” and encourages guests to have a complete night at the hotel with drinks at The Regent, dinner at Dolce and then dance the night away downstairs at Rec Room.

Curious when brunch service will start at Dolce? Or what some of D’Antonio’s favorite dishes are? Check out the video above to find out that and more.

R House Opens in Wynwood

R House exterior - photo credit Manny Hernandez

The beloved Wynwood art district is continuing to thrive and has really elevated its game with the arrival of R House. R House is a beautiful new concept that flawlessly intertwines sumptuous cuisine, vibrant art and talented musicians into a serene and gratifying setting.  Chef and owner Rocco Carulli describes it as a “full sensory experience” and he has definitely succeeded in his goal of utter immersion.

The restaurant is alluring, commodious and incorporates vivid and radiant paintings into its motif. It does not feel like a museum, but rather a restaurant with splendid art decor. There is a huge courtyard with outdoor seating and an area for large bands to perform. The food was marvelous and included passed hors d’oeuvres of sweet short rib sliders with caramelized onions, awesome tuna tartare with a hint of wasabi, duck confit spring rolls, goat cheese crostini, and sweet chili skirt steak skewers. There was also a  gourmet buffet that included Brazilian seafood moqueca with ample shrimp and succulent scallops, wild mushroom pesto risotto, futti di mare, pasta with broccolini and parmesan cheese, Israeli couscous with mixed grilled vegetables and a delicious sweet pea falafel with Mediterranean salad.

It was quite an experience dining on delectable cuisine and admiring art while listening to melodic music in the courtyard. It truly was an enjoyable multisensory experience and one which we would gladly partake in again.

Miami International Film Festival premiere of Deep City: Birth of the Miami Sound at The Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center on 3/14/14

Miami International Film Festival premiere of Deep City: Birth of the Miami Sound at The Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center on Friday, March 14, 2014.

Movie  synopsis: “A celebration of Deep City Records, an independent label behind some of the richest music of South Florida’s soul music scene in the 1960s, this homegrown Florida story resurrects a piece of our nearly forgotten history in a rock-and-funk documentary from local filmmakers Marlon Johnson, Dennis Scholl, and Chad Tingle. Immensely talented producers and musicians such as Willie Clarke, Clarence Reid, Johnny Pearsall, Helene Smith, Betty Wright and others created and fought for a unique Florida sound in the 1960s.”

Deep City: “Birth of the Miami Sound has a compelling and galvanizing story to tell, but the zinger of this experience is the force of its soundtrack. To this day, the “Miami sound” remains wholly infectious and contagious, and to celebrate the accomplishments of the amazing musicians from a half-century ago, we will lift the screen following the end of the film for an on-stage party with DJ Spam putting a modern spin on the old Deep City sound. Complimentary beverages courtesy of Stella Artois and overflowing food stations will keep the party going, and several Deep City originals will be on hand in person. – Jaie Laplante.”

Good friends and artistic cohorts Carl Cox and Nicole Moudaber are set to release their very first collaboration, a sonic onslaught dubbed “See You Next Tuesday.” The two-track release (the original plus a deep mix) will drop April 7 on Moudaber’s MOOD Records. As expected from these bastions of techno, the tracks are perfectly executed, and aimed squarely at the dancefloor. To celebrate their forthcomng release, Cox will join Moudaber’s ‘In the MOOD’ takeover during Winter Music Conference aka Miami Music Week this year. The massive pool party on Thursday, March 27 at The Raleigh Hotel will feature Moudaber and Cox, alongside NYC house music legend Danny Tenaglia, Kompakt producer Tom Peters, Saved Records artist Lauren Lane, and Traktor master ENDO providing the soundtrack for this daytime affair.

Cox has been a supporter of Nicole from the outset, releasing her productions on his Intec label (‘One Day Later’ and last year’s ‘Roar’ EP), commissioning remixes of his originals (2011’s ‘Chemistry’), and inviting her to spin alongside him around the globe, at his Carl Cox & Friends festival stages and Space Ibiza residency. The “Tuesday” project was Cox’s idea: He reportedly handed Moudaber a zip drive stating, “Right, we’re doing a collab and we’re putting it out on MOOD, but all I have is the bass loop." A few email swaps later, the track was born.

The original mix of “See You Next Tuesday” is a no-nonsense techno gem that features a pulsating bass interjected by shimmering breaks and delicate snares. The middle section takes the listener deeper down the rabbit hole with haunting ethereal vocal cuts, before things get taken up a gear yet again. The deep mix is a groovier affair with intricate drum patterns and a warm bass line that balances the driving nature of the original, and demonstrates the pair’s ability to travel unexpected musical ground.

The release is the latest evidence that Nicole’s MOOD brand is building momentum: Her ‘In the Mood’ events series, for which she selects each artist, hits Miami this March. And Moudaber is set to play mega-festival Coachella in April. All told, it appears that Nicole is once again raising the stakes in 2014.

30 States Dance Across America for Water on April 12, 4pm

Coming together on Saturday, April 12 at 4pmEST are 1500 dancers from across the country to perform a site-specific dance at a river, a bay, a lake, the ocean, or any water site nearby. From the University of Alaska to Miami Dade College, from the Dance Engagement Company in California to Bates College in Maine, students from colleges and universities, private dance schools, high schools and elementary schools, and dance companies will unite to celebrate Water.

“My desire in creating National Water Dance was to inspire young artists to go beyond the studio and the stage with their art; to connect with the environment and realize the power of art to bring awareness to environmental issues, particularly water,” said National Water Dance founder and artistic director Dale Andree. “Through the internet National Water Dance has become the community of artists/activists that I hoped it would.”

Founded by artistic director Dale Andree and produced by Daniel Lewis, National Water Dance has been created to bring attention to the power and fragility of the nation’s waterways. Bringing dancers and musicians together from across the country and using dance as a form of social activism is, according to Ms Andree, “a force that can create social change.”

The Miami performance of National Water Dance will feature 80 dancers and 50 singers at the Deering Estate at Cutler, as part of their Festival of the Arts, at 4pm on Saturday, April 12. The artists will perform to an original score performed by its composers Miami musicians Vicki Richards and Jeff Deen. Admission from 3:30pm on is FREE. Participating schools include New World School of the Arts, South Miami Community Middle School, Arthur and Polly Mays Conservatory of the Arts, RR Moton Elementary School and Miami Dade College/Kendall Campus under the direction of Michelle Grant-Murray, assistant director of the Miami-Dade portion of National Water Dance.

“It will be so exciting to see dancers from across the nation, talking about our environment and turning those ideas into a symphony of movement across the country,” said Daniel Lewis, founding Dean of Dance of New World School of the Arts.

The entire local and national event will be live streamed.

As you may have heard, SAVE and the ACLU of Florida have announced the filing of a groundbreaking lawsuit on behalf of eight married couples to secure recognition from the state of Florida for same-sex marriages performed out-of-state.

A pro-equality ruling would grant gay couples married in states that perform same-sex marriages access to many rights and benefits that Florida grants to opposite-sex married couples, such as Social Security survivor benefits and the right to include your spouse on your health insurance policy.

It’s our pleasure to invite you to SAVE’s annual Champions of Equality awards reception and gala, where we will honor the eight brave couples taking a stand for equality in court.

SAVE is also proud to honor State Representative David Richardson, County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson, and filmmaker Joe Cardona.

We hope you will join us in honoring these trailblazers on May 9th. Buy your tickets today!

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) MDC Live Arts presents Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Sam Green with venerated indie rock band Yo La Tengo for an enthralling hour-long “live documentary” on R. Buckminster Fuller, the inventor, architect, futurist, engineer, and author most famously known for his creation of the geodesic dome. As a progenitor of such issues as sustainability and conservation, Fuller was also a proponent of radical societal change through design and architecture.

MDC Live Arts will present two back-to-back performances of The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m., Saturday, March 22, at Colony Theatre in Miami Beach. Yo La Tengo will provide the live, sonically subtle and richly atmospheric, backdrop soundtrack for Green’s charismatic in-person cinematic narration as he delves deep into projecting film clips, photographs, letters, and blueprints from Fuller’s immense body of work.

“Fuller was ahead of his time, the values that his work and life encompassed are directly aligned with the global environmental movement of today,” said MDC Live Arts Executive Director Kathryn Garcia. “Whether or not people are familiar with him and his design legacy they will be fortunate to experience his life’s work through this captivating and creative reflection by Green and Yo La Tengo.”

A unique collaboration between two independent pioneers of film and music, The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller premiered May 1, 2012, at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as a part of the 2012 San Francisco International Film Festival. The piece has screened exclusively at select art venues, including the Time-Based Art Festival in Portland, OR, the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, OH, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, MA.

Originally conceived at our home, Eleazar Delgado Studio has always been the artist’s creative space. The idea grew into a gathering place for our friends, mostly artists in their own rights, to showcase their current work and preview concepts. We made it official in 2010 when we opened a public space in Wynwood. Today in addition to being Eleazar’s personal art studio, we host local talents and leaders who need a professional environment to showcase, educate, and enrich the community at large.

Produced by Barry University’s Department of Fine Arts, this modern adaptation casts Tartuffe as a deposed televangelist who rooks Orgon and his family of their money and property and nearly compromises Orgon’s wife. The action takes place in a religious television studio in Baton Rouge where the characters cavort to either prevent or aid Tartuffe in his machinations. Written in modern verse, Tartuffe: Born Again adheres closely to the structure and form of the original. Moliere’s legendary comedic characters are delightfully at home in this modern day version that played at New York’s Circle in the Square.

Successfully hitting record capacity throughout the course of the night at their closing party this year, ANTS has been the standout debut Ibiza residency of 2013. Showing respect to the underground, whilst fitting perfectly in amongst the islands veterans, their colony of world-renowned guests, supported by their solid bill of residents has created a unique party atmosphere at Ibiza’s most sought after venue Ushuaïa Ibiza. Due to their quirky promotional campaigns and distinctive branding, ANTS has become the most talked about events of the season and with heavy plans for growth in 2013 and beyond, looks set to maintain its position.

ANTS deliberately keep the party underground and personal. In addition to the thousands of visitors flocking to Ibiza every summer, it is a party for the workers – the people who inextricably know the Ibiza scene – and this has been paramount to its success. From little bronze ants dotted around the island, to the ANTS logo on one-euro coins and cigarette boxes, the colony has been triumphant in its domination, encouraging everyone to join the colony. During the day DJs played behind Ushuaïa’s famous pool, placing them right in the action and as the evening unfolded the booth switched back to normal, with a heavy weight headliner announcing the second phase of the party. Fuelling the colony with positive vibrations are a range of top artists such as Joris Voorn, Nic Fanciulli, Deetron, George Fitzgerald, Hot Since 82, ONNO and emerging names like Andrea Oliva, UNER and Los Suruba.

“Through the Lens” – 60th Anniversary Alumni Artist Series: Exhibit 3

Carl Juste, ACND alumnus ’81, will present a retrospective of his work documenting the course of his 25 year career as photojournalist for the Miami Herald and past exhibits at ACND including: “Cachao” 2007; “Havana & Haiti” 2008; and “Invictus: Haiti Unconquered.”

Under threat of persecution, Haitian-born Carl Phillipe Juste (ACND alumnus 1981), fled with his family from Haiti in 1965. Settling in Miami’s Haitian community, Juste flourished academically and won a scholarship to the University of Miami. Although he intended to be an engineer, he could not ignore the photographic inner voice that had spoken to him since childhood. Responding to a clear relationship he shared with the visual world, Juste vigorously pursued photojournalism and since 1991, has served his community through his work at the Miami Herald. He has received numerous awards for his work from Picture of the Year, Pulitzer Prize, Society for News Design, Best of Photojournalism, and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award. Juste is founder of both the IPC Visual Lab and Iris Photo Collective.

Juste has exhibited his own work and of his students from IPC Visual Lab many times at the ACND Gallery, and has exhibited at both solo and group shows at the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, Little Haiti Cultural Center, and other galleries throughout South Florida.

6-Show SXSW Alt Country / Bluegrass act, The Defibulators hit Miami for a performance Tuesday Night show at Will Call Miami.

Miami’s own gem, Los Bastardos, kick off the night!.

“The Defibulators (not defibrillators) hail from Brooklyn, New York’s thriving indie scene and they’ve developed a funky, rootsy, out-of-control sound that’s all their own. The six-man, one-woman band blends bluegrass, country, honky tonk, rockabilly, Dixieland jazz, punk, and maybe a touch of anti-folk into an intoxicating, good-time mélange that’s guaranteed to slap a smile on your face. Roots-heavy, post-punk music that reinvents the conventions of country music with a CBGB-meets-Grand Ole Opry feel.”

“War Story” is the third film produced by an industry newcomer, Kreate Films, a local South Florida production company. Lee (Catherine Keener) is a war photographer who has spent her adult life in the world’s most treacherous conflict zones, documenting the catastrophes of others. When we meet her, she has recently experienced her own horror after being taken hostage and brutalized in Libya. Instead of returning to New York where her concerned colleagues and loved ones anxiously await her, Lee detours to Sicily instead, where she holes up in a small hotel to weather her PTSD on her own terms, not far from the home of her former lover and mentor Albert (Ben Kingsley). As Lee struggles to recover from her psychic and physical wounds, she crosses paths with Hafsia (Hafsia Herzi), a young Tunisian migrant in need of an abortion and safe passage to France, who bears a striking resemblance to a Libyan girl Lee photographed just before her capture. Desperate to connect, Lee tries to help Hafsia, and conquer her own formidable demons in the process.

The Bass Museum of Art, one of Miami Beach’s key cultural landmarks, along with a select group of the city’s leading arts patrons, socialites and tastemakers will host its annual fundraiser, “A Night at the Museum,”. The event is expected to attract more than 500 guests who will receive a private preview of Vanitas: Fashion and Art.

While enjoying cocktails, refreshments and beats by Mauricio Parra, attendees will explore the institution’s new exhibition, Vanitas: Fashion and Art . Continuing its mission to “inspire and educate by exploring the connections between our historical collections and contemporary art” Vanitas: Fashion and Art explores the theme of vanitas as expressed in avant garde ready-to-wear and haute couture as well as in contemporary paintings, sculptures, industrial design and new media. The exhibition will include works by contemporary designers and artists. The installation will also highlight rare examples of the Bass Museum of Art’s remarkable collection of historic frames by incorporating them spatially in the installation to create a dynamic and interactive engagement of artworks and viewer.

The exhibition will include works by contemporary designers and artists such as pieces by Isaac Mizrahi, Manolo Blahnik and a velvet mirrored evening jacket by Elsa Schiaparelli will also be on display, alongside dresses by Yohji Yamamoto and Iris van Herpen, among others. Conceived as a kind of exoskeleton and created through the use of computer programs and 3D printing, Van Herpen’s polyamide dress gives the appearance of a skeletal form and was presented as part of the designer’s debut collection. These pieces from the world of fashion will be juxtaposed with film and video works by Sam Taylor-Johnson and Greta Alfaro, photographs from Pinar Yolacan’s Perishables series, and Ori Gersht’s Blow Up, a large scale photograph of an elaborate floral arrangement based on a nineteenth-century still-life by the French painter Henri Fantin-Latour, captured at the moment that it explodes.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction including art, experiences and luxury items.

Dinner Lab Miami Now Open for Adventurous Foodies

Dining in a Boxing Gym

Dinner-Lab-Miami-06

There is a severe crisis afflicting the affluent and dedicated foodies of our country — they are running out of new places to eat!! Fear not, because the Dinner Lab has opened and has now come to Miami to alleviate this existential catastrophe.

“The Dinner Lab is a membership-based social dining experiment that unites undiscovered chefs with adventurous diners who are looking for something different from the traditional restaurant experience. Whether it happens on the roof of an abandoned building, the floor of a paper mill, or inside a motorcycle dealership….Our events bring together a group of interesting strangers around a common table to share cuisine crafted by up-and-coming chefs from all over the country. We don’t dictate what our chefs cook, but instead give them a platform to tell a story through the menu – recipes that speak to their background or heritage, ingredients they are passionate about, or completely new dishes they have been experimenting with on days away from the restaurant.”

Dinner-Lab-Miami-04

We adore this idea and were very excited to try it. After all, an open mind and adventurous spirit are the keys to discovering new delicacies. We embarked upon our Lab experience on Valentine’s Night for the “Tough Love” themed dinner at Matt Baiamonte’s Boxing Clubin Wynwood. It was quite interesting to dine and imbibe in a locale where people usually shed blood, sweat and tears considering those juices are usually reserved for restaurant kitchens. Thankfully, the intoxicating scent of BO (Body Odor) was not present, replaced instead with the mouth-watering aromas of the fare being prepared. The lab has a 30 minute cocktail hour preceding dinner where, wine, beer, and mixed drinks were graciously served. The ginger beer and rum concoctions were quite tasty.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-07

There were about seven tables for our time slot filled with food-loving strangers to choose from. We were astutely drawn to the one with a fabulous gay and lesbian couple. There is something tantalizing about dining with strangers who share your bravery and openness. It turned out to be tremendously fun. The meal opened with a several little treats served one by one including a great baked pear with a mysterious curry cream, a crostini with tomato and basil and a superbly seasoned oyster.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-11

First course - Grilled Cremini with toasted goat cheese gnudi and bechamel. This dish emitted a magnificent saliva inducing scent. Gnudi made with ricotta and a bit of flour leaving behind a dumpling also known as “naked ravioli“ ravioli filling without the pasta resulting in a dumpling-like delight. If you like gnocchi, chances are you’ll be a fan of gnudi, too.  The cremini mushrooms (immature portabella mushrooms) were succulent and had a deep decadent taste that balanced well with fluffy lightness of the the goat cheese gnudi.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-14

Second course – Cuttlefish Carbonara with bacon, scallion, Parmesan foam and quail eggs. This was a truly creatively delicious spin on carbonara. The flavor was sublime and the mix of the crunchy bacon and Parmesan foam with quail egg created a savory orgy of textures thats were a joy to swirl in your mouth. It was tongues down the paramount dish of the night.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-19

Third course - Confit Hanger with sweet potato carrot puree, and roast pepper relish. This dish had a lot of potential, but fell flat on its face like a boxer facing Mohammed Ali in his prime. The steak was ridiculously well done with a spicy and sweet potato carrot purée that left the palate confused.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-24

Fourth course – Gallette De Cochon with pork galce, cauliflower purée and poached mustard seeds.  The crispy crust pulled pork with stellar cauliflower puree was pretty delicious. The cauliflower puree was so smooth, you couldn’t believe it wasn’t potato.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-28

Fifth course – Truffle Duo with hazelnut, almond, white chocolate truffle, raspberry sorbet, shortbread cookie and dark chocolate ganache. This dessert plate was split in two with marvelous on one side and dessert confusion on the other. The white truffle ball over the dark chocolate ganache was sublime. We could have eaten a baker’s dozen of them. Unfortunately, the overtly sour and harsh raspberry sorbet created havoc on the plate. It was so heinously tart and overpowering that we were uttelry bewildered about its plate presence. Thankfully, it was quarantined to one side so it did not contaminate the delectable truffle ball.

Dinner-Lab-Miami-36

The motto of the Lab is “consistently inconsistent,” so some meals may be phenom and others not so much. While ours fell a little short of phenom, we still loved the experience and enjoyed trying these experimental dishes. We had an amazing time eating and drinking brand new food with cool, fun and hilarious strangers. We will gladly be a chef’s guinea pig again at the Dinner Lab again.

Sea Salt and Pepper with a Side of Swank

We are admirable proponents of aquatic-side dining. It adds a touch of serenity to the meal and amplifies the experience. We were fortunate enough to have a Chef’s tasting at the new Sea Salt and Pepper in the company of our new friends who happen to be a foodie writer couple like us. Do you know what happens when four foodies get together to dine? No leftovers.

Situated right off of the Miami River by the fresh fish market, we were tremendously impressed with how beauteous this place was. The architecture is exquisite and we caught ourselves admiring the place throughout dinner taking in the ambience. The restaurant is colossal with ample seating indoors, outdoors and at the bar. The water skyline paints a majestic backdrop that is visible from both the inside and the dockside seating. Sea-faring tycoons may navigate their yacht and dock it there, if they are so inclined. We do not know if aqua valet is extra. For your reading pleasure, we will highlight our favorite dishes of the night.

The Grilled Octopus ($18) was thick, fresh and juicy. The luxurious tentacles shimmered with a pretty purple hue and were quickly consumed off the plate. Octopus is usually served in some variation of sauce, so it was a nice treat to sample it with only olive oil, lemon zest and fresh herbs. It really helped us appreciate how delicious naked octopus tastes.

Sea-Salt-and-Pepper-11

The Black Truffle Veal Chop ($46) was by far the table’s darling dish of the night. It was a sizable portion that was wood fire oven roasted to perfection. The chop was soft as velvet and erupting with alluring truffilized baby cow nectar. The bone was literally gnawed on and sucked caveman style. Putting truffle on anything is usually a great idea but lathering it on a succulent veal chop is fu*king brilliant.

Sea-Salt-and-Pepper-31

The Classic Seasalt Seafood ($70) is a platter that is $35 a person that requires a minimum order of two people. It is a cornucopia of tasty sea critters with dungeness crab, lobster, jumbo shrimp and fish soaking in a solid tomato broth. We gave them a touching and joyous burial in our mouths.

Sea-Salt-and-Pepper-24

Sea Salt and Pepper is a gorgeous place to dine. The chic upbeat vibe mixed with the placid river setting will impress your friends, your date and even your parents.

Swamp Stomp at Tobacco Road

Tremendously Talented Musicians Perform at Tobacco Road

Swamp-Stomp-Fri-7

In this day and age where it is prohibitively expensive to experience some truly amazing non local music, it was so beautiful to see good ole Tobacco Road offering up a melodic solution. The literal Miami institution which has been around for over 100 years hosted the 7th Annual Swamp Stomp that brought together some of the best bands you have probably never heard. For $10, YES ONLY $10, one could partake in a superb two night music festival headlined by the uber talented reggae band Jahfe and the amazingly captivating The Bright Light Social Hour (TBLSH). There were also $50 VIP tickets to benefit the benevolent charity Generation Miami that included admission, all you can eat BBQ including delicious Swamp (gator meat) Chilli and an open bar with a solid selection of liquor, not bottom wrung shitty well piss.

The show was held in the parking lot with a stage right under the matrix of ginormous cranes building Brickell’s epic new City Center. It was a pretty remarkable to see this burgeoning project as the festival backdrop. The Friday night show was dedicated to reggae with performances by the incredibly talented, local artists Don Sha, Johnny Dreadand headlined by Jahfe. We missed Johnny, but Don Sha and Jahfe were both truly amazing. Check out their music if you want to discover some worthwhile new bands.

The Saturday night show had an American Roots and Rock n’ Roll theme. We only made it to see Roosevelt Collier’s Phunk Phactory and The Bright Light Social Hour but both profoundly rocked it. The Phunk Phactory were really badass, they are a South Florida bred instrumental band that play awesome phunky ass Jazz. They finished off their magnificent set with two classic covers, Sly and the Family Stone’s “Thank You” and George Clinton’s “We Want the Funk.”

We actually stumbled upon The Bright Light Social Hour last year by accident at The Stage and fell IN LOVE. These guys are such a talented, under-the-radar group that fuses together psychedelic/rock/southern/jam into phenomenal dream-weaving music. Do yourself a huge favor and listen to their epic song “Detroit” right now. (You know you want to click on it.) Their mesmerizing songs get under your skin and then when these guys start to jam and rip on their guitars, you just float away with them into musical Nirvana. They mixed a lot of their new songs into this set which were good but it is their old stuff that goose bumps are made of. They even played a rousing cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get it On” in their encore.

We had so much fun at Swamp Stomp and were so fortunate to have gone to see amazing bands and discover new ones. Thank you, Tobacco Road. We hope you continue to have these terrific Stomps for your next century of existence.

“Six Degrees of Techno” (or 6DoT) is a new organization that connects passionate electronic dance music enthusiasts within local communities and bridges those alliances with similar groups in other cities. We seek to create and cultivate the valuable relationships made through the sharing of this music and leverage these relationships into something that is bigger than the sum of its parts. 6DoT’s philanthropic focus aims to help non-profits and other organizations that provide much-needed music education and artistic development programs to young adults that would otherwise not have access.

More information on Facebook

StarsOutreach is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is “to provide opportunities for talented students to interact, learn, and be inspired by established artists as their mentors in order to achieve their full artistic, intellectual, social, cultural, and physical potential”. Their artist enrichment programs focus on career development and specialized music lessons within their state-of-the-art facility in downtown Hollywood, Florida. Through guidance and positive reinforcement, Stars Outreach supports its students and enables them to rise above challenges by providing them with creative outlets and the opportunity to express themselves in productive ways.

More information at: https://www.facebook.com/Starsoutreach

6DoT’s inaugural event will benefit StarsOutreach’s artistic development programs. 100% of ticket proceeds and a portion of the bar sales will go directly into a scholarship fund which the organization will pull from to provide services for economically-disadvantaged kids who otherwise would not be able to use their services.

Lincoln, AIA Explore Similarities Between Luxury Auto Design and High-end Architecture

>Designers of luxury automobiles and architects of upscale buildings both need to create appealing, intimate and exclusive experiences for high-end clients in a functional environment

>Sophisticated, elegant design that is comfortable and efficient drives the creative process for both disciplines

>Each maximizes space while achieving a perfect balance of color and light complemented by rich materials to stimulate the senses

MIAMI, Feb. 27, 2014 – The goal of luxury automobile designers is to create a sense of occasion each time the highly discerning driver gets behind the wheel.

Architects of high-end buildings are challenged to achieve the same goal. Each discipline incorporates proportion, volume, sculpture, form, materials, graphics and space to provide unique luxury experiences that touch all the senses.

The similarities between these two worlds of design will be the subject of “Designing Luxury,” a panel discussion at the Miami Center for Architecture & Design.

“With any product or experience, the world of luxury design follows basic, yet vital, tenets,” said David Woodhouse, director of Lincoln design and a panelist. “Both luxury automobile designers and designers of high-end buildings need their creations to meet all the necessary functional requirements, but elevate the execution in a way that speaks to people’s aspirations, taps into their dreams and helps them stand apart from the crowd.”

Joining Woodhouse on the panel are two members of the American Institute of Architects: Rene Gonzalez, principal of Rene Gonzalez Architect, and Bernard Zyscovich, managing partner of Zyscovich Inc.

Moderating the dialogue is Javier F. Salman, senior project architect, Stantec, and also a member of AIA.

“I’m excited to learn about something I’m passionate about – automotive design – in a close and personal way and learn how it compares and contrasts to my particular brand of design,” said Salman, who owns a 1971 Lincoln Mark III.

This Lincoln Mark III – chocolate brown metallic exterior with bucket seats and brown interior – is one of a handful of cars owned by Salman, who repairs and restores vintage cars as a hobby.

The panel will explore designing luxury through best ways to interpret heritage and customer aspirations, then using these findings to create the luxury experience.

“Luxury automobile exterior design should be simple, inviting, approachable and most of all, elegant,” Woodhouse said. “Exterior design needs to be complemented by an interior that makes the driver feel comfortable and confident. Ultimately, the two work together to create an experience that is unique, personal and luxurious.

Integrating technology to create a warmer, more personal experience differentiates luxury automobile design. The Lincoln MKC small premium utility will debut Lincoln Experiences when it goes on sale later this year. Lincoln Experiences:

  • Anticipates needs and preferences – As you approach the vehicle it anticipates you, welcomes you and guides you with subtle and focused lighting where it is most needed.
  • Employs fluid, seamless motions and sounds – Unlocking and entering the vehicle is a fluid and effortless experience with refined motions and sounds, ambient lighting and crafted human interfaces.
  • Creates warm and inviting comfort – The cabin is a warm and inviting space with seating that embraces and forms around you, and appropriate ambient lighting to meet your needs and personal preferences.

“I am eager to listen to and participate in the exchange of ideas,” Woodhouse said. “I look forward to bringing back new perspectives I can employ in the automotive world.”

South Florida moms prepare for the first Mom’s Night Out event. Mom’s Night Out (MNO) is an event dedicated to all mothers throughout South Florida. All women are invited to attend to shop special promotions from participating fine retailers while enjoying sips, snacks, a free beauty bar, dancing and giveaways.

MNO began late last year when two long time friends came together. After creating several events branded for other companies, they decided it was time to create an event honoring South Florida’s thriving community of mothers. Jessica Prieto, Founder of Mom’s Night Out and mother to a 19 month old, had a vision to create an event that would allow moms to bond, reward themselves and be pampered all while celebrating their hard work and efforts within an upscale happy hour atmosphere.

“Between diaper changes, work, dirty dishes, mommy & me classes, laundry, and everything else, I barely have time to sit down, much less spend time with my girl friends. Moms need, and most importantly, deserve a break. That’s what Mom’s Night Out is all about,” explains Jessica Prieto. “We bring the shopping to you, with stores like Wacoal, Benii Boutique and La Belle Mobile Boutique. You can get pampered for free by Mary Kay, Nail Bar & Lounge and Blo Blow Dry Bar. We will also be giving away some great prizes, including our grand prize provided by Juno Lucina. I want all moms to put on their sexy heels, shop, dance and have fun!” said Jessica.

Additional event sponsors include Frost Shot, Baby Signs, Thirty One, Origami Owl, ItWorks, All Over U Soaps & More, Paparazzi, Body By VI, Ricardo Amar Photography, DeliverLean, Dr. Vanessa Marino, Ready Freddie Studios, Heather Lopez Enterprises and Baby Tots Den.

Mom’s Night Out Event is a Soul Of Miami sponsor.

An icon of Buenos Aires’ dynamic alternative music scene, Johansen’s music truly represents the sophistication of Latin American culture.

Born in Alaska to an Argentine mother, Johansen grew up between the US and Argentina. He spent his 20s in New York City, before returning to Buenos Aires to immerse himself in the life of the city.

His sound today reflects a sophisticated amalgam of influences, from his early rock years and modern songwriting, to classic Latin elements like tango and milonga – all anchored by a dose of poetic lyrics and sublime arrangements. His records have been nominated for the Grammy Awards’ Best Latin Pop album and the Latin Grammy Awards’ Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Music Video, among other categories. Johansen + The Nada perform their first public concert in Miami in support of their new “Bi”, as in bi-cultural, a two-disk edition reflecting the influences of both North and South America.

News: The Miami Foundation and Health Foundation of South Florida 2014 Public Space Ideas Contest Deadline 4/8/14

The Miami Foundation will accept idea submissions March 3rd through April 8th for the 2014 Public Space Challenge. The county-wide challenge will again seek to uncover the best ideas for creating and improving local public spaces. Ideas may be submitted at ourmiami.org/challenge by anyone, including individuals, groups, for-profit companies and nonprofit organizations. Community experts and professional placemakers will identify the top ideas; The Miami Foundation and Health Foundation of South Florida will invest $100,000 and $30,000, respectively, to make the ideas become reality. The program is part of The Miami Foundation’s Our Miami initiative, which fosters community by building attachment to the city, developing public spaces and retaining young talent in Miami.

“Vibrant public spaces are essential to social engagement in our neighborhoods and Miami’s civic life,” said Javier Alberto Soto, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation. “During the inaugural 2013 challenge, this community generated incredible energy and awareness benefitting Miami’s public spaces. By allowing every resident a voice through our idea submission platform, we hope Miamians will take personal interest in creating a more appealing and connected city.” Last year, more than 250 ideas were submitted.
Public spaces are defined as parks, libraries, public buildings, markets, plazas, playgrounds or any place where people can convene and link up. Health Foundation of South Florida will again invest an additional $30,000 in the challenge to fund ideas promoting healthy, physical exercise activities and access to fresh food through gardens and farmer’s markets.

Shelly Baer, Brickell resident and 2013 challenge winner, had the idea to install benches along the Brickell Bay Drive walkway. Soon, local residents will be able to sit and chat with scenic Biscayne Bay as a backdrop. “I was overwhelmed with the community support for my idea,” said Baer. “It was such a simple way to improve the neighborhood and I’m glad the challenge empowered me to make it happen.”

Representatives from The Miami Foundation along with winners from last year’s Public Space Challenge will host training and information seminars throughout the submission period. Community experts and placemakers will evaluate all submissions and select finalists. These finalists will have professional support to develop full proposals, from which winners will be selected and announced in early summer.

The Public Space Challenge is part of The Miami Foundation’s Our Miami initiative, which aims to attract and retain young talent in Miami-Dade by fostering a greater sense of community and by building attachment to the city. “Public spaces shape the way we interact with our environment. These are the places we meet, relax, and connect with each other,” said Stuart Kennedy, senior programs officer for The Miami Foundation. “Everyone has the power to build a better Miami, and the Public Space Challenge allows us to invest in those ready to do so.”

The submission period runs through April 4th. For more information, help with developing ideas, or information about last year’s winners, visit ourmiami.org/challenge.

Miami Foundation will be hosting a series of Community Meetings for those interested in learning more.

Trek Six”s Odds and Ends show

Opening reception March 6th 7pm-10pm

Trek six will be raffling off an original 3ft x 4ft piece during art walk saturday!

Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to have work by a Miami legend!

“Odds & Ends is a collection of works that although were not design to function as a complete body of work do show a linear form of thought and ideas in transition. Many times when an artist is creating they go through many trials and errors before achieving the style or aesthetic they want , this body of work presents old pieces, new pieces and works that haven’t seen too much light but clearly show a path from point A to point B. Most of the work will be aerosol but there are some pieces that showcase acrylics along side their spraycan counter parts to create an atmosphere that is colorful, surreal, and curious with lines , geometry and experimentation.”

Author and advocate in the war against childhood sex abuse (CSA), Julie Marie Mansfield will be conducting her Catalyst Series/Book signing of her debut book ‘Maybe God Was Busy,’ 6:30pm, Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Books and Books (265 Aragon Ave, Coral Gables, FL 33134.) Mansfield’s goal is to raise awareness and create a platform to foster dialogue and healing for those affected by CSA. According to Crimes Against Children Research Center 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse. As alarming as these numbers are, they could be drastically higher as it is widely accepted that only one out of every 10 cases of CSA is reported. Jamaican-born Mansfield is committed to sharing her story, especially as the nation gets ready to commemorate National Sexual Abuse Awareness Month (April), and is hoping that in telling her story others will be encouraged to tell their own. She also hopes that people will see the face and human side of the ravages of CSA as oppose to just the statistics that are given when one speaks about CSA.

Get Seduced at Scarpetta

Scarpetta’s Sultry Dining Experience

There is something exceptional in the air at the Fontainbleau. In addition to the lavish perfumes of the gorgeous gold diggers and the pretentiousness of the millionaires, there is also this intoxicating energy that imbues one with feelings of regal and sexiness. Walking through the doors and into this haven of plush indulgence seems to elevate the resort’s patrons. We finally got around to trying the fabled Scarpetta that our foodie circle raves about and took the tongue plunge. The ambiance was exalting, the service impeccable, the soundtrack melodic and the food was great too.

After promenading past the seductive bar and the beautiful people drinking at it, we were seated in a luxurious dining area. Before we even ordered our fare a tasty basket with an assortment of fresh bread was delivered along with stellar eggplant dip, oil and butter. It came hot, crispy and moist straight from the oven. The favorite was a concoction of thin sliced salami layered into the bread with tomatoes.

We started with the acclaimed Creamy Polenta and it was better than we ever could have imagined. Polenta is cornmeal that is boiled into a porridge. Scarpetta serves it next to a bowl of fricasseed (cut up, sautéed and braised) truffled mushrooms. What makes this treat so freakishly deliciously special is that the polenta is cooked for three hours, which dissolves ALL of the grains. This process transforms it into this uber creamy and deliriously superb delicacy. It possesses an amazing consistency that simultaneously dazzles and soothes the mouth. The Hedonist preferred it without the mushrooms, so you might want to stop the server from mixing the two after it is bestowed upon your table and try it both ways.

For our second app we had the Diver Scallop Crudo, with fennel orange and pine nuts. This minuscule plate was refreshing and light with a hint of sweetness.

crudo

We started the main course with the Duck and Foie Gras Ravioli with a marsala reduction. The diminutive pasta purses were loaded with ample duck and foie with a scrumptious sauce and a generous portion. While the foie was not on par with the French versions that transports your palate into Nirvana, it was still a solid dish.

The only letdown of the night was the Black Taglioni with stewed baby octopus and basil bread crumbs. The dish looked resplendent but was truly uninspiring. It consisted of just one flavor note and was fairly bland. When our gracious waitress asked us how everything was, I responded in my usual brutally honest way that the taglioni was disappointing. She asked if we wanted to switch it out, but not wanting to make a fuss, we politely declined. A couple minutes later the manager arrived and profusely apologized and demanded that we substitute out the taglioni for their famous spaghetti. This is a true staple of a fantastic restaurant, where unadulterated customer satisfaction is paramount. They had no idea we were bloggers and still insisted on optimizing our experience, kudos Scarpetta.

The Spaghetti with tomato and basil is what vaulted Scarpetta aloft to its world renowned fame. They use some of the finest pasta imported from Italy and one can taste the difference. It was cooked to utter perfection al dente (firm, but not hard). It was thick substantial noodles, yet soft enough to twirl around your fork and tongue. These delicately firm noodles just feel so amazing to bite into. The sauce was nice, not overpowered by the tomato and contained some depth from the fresh basil. It is not a rich dish and is fairly simple on the taste spectrum, but it is just done right as a perfect plain spaghetti dish was meant to be.

To consummate the meal, we had the Coconut Panna Cotta with caramelized pineapple and guava “soup”. This was a fun dessert that made dining feel more like play. The underneath the “sweet and tart” soup was a deceptively thick custard, so when you dipped your spoon into it, you found yourself surprised at the resistance. It was definitely addictive as all the flavors harmoniously blended together into an ambrosial sugar rush. The tiny cookie (tuile) on top was simply divine.

Since one dessert is rarely enough we also ordered the Coffee Semifredo with hazelnuts, anise cream and lemon sorbet that was a brilliant treat. The hazelnut was at the forefront with a subdued cafecito taste entwined into it. The highlight of the dish was a ridiculously poignant lemon sorbet that will energize your face from its sheer flavor strength. I am not sure what goes on in that kitchen but it felt like the sorbet had some adderal or cocaine in it. I scooped up a bit to put on my teeth to see if I could get a lemon numbie but to no avail.

IMG_0820

Scarpetta provided a truly luscious and gratifying experience, draped in provocativeness. The service and presentation were splendorous, demonstrating that they will go above and beyond when it comes to making sure its customers are satiated and satisfied. We definitely were.

Ikura Sushi Lounge – A Diamond in the Raw

Ikura Sushi is Well Worth the Trip

Courtesy of Ikura Sushi

We discovered Ikura Sushi Lounge while perusing through the restaurants listed on Local Dines, a fabulous website that offers discounted gift certificates for some really good spots. It was a veritable joy to dine there. The restaurant feels like a modern, cozy yet upscale-ish living room. The ever-so-talented chef is in the back corner for all to admire, working up his unique and creative slants on sushi. Three out of the four dishes we had were worth ordering again and two of them were marvelous.

Kanikama Crunch @ Ikura Sushi Lounge

The Kanikama Crunch was legitimately incredible. It was comprised of a specialty house crab salad, Tobiko and Crunchy Flakes. The mix of the soft and crunchy consistencies dripping with sweet, yet spicy combo was superb. It is one of their best dishes and a must order.

Urmaki Mango @ Ikura Sushi Lounge

The Urmaki Mango Roll drew our attention because we freaking adore mango and the Shedonist’s Dominican nature implores her to order any sushi that comes with cilantro. This unique roll contained: Salmon, Ikura Shrimp, Avocado, Cilantro, Tobiko Mix, Glazed Mangos and Aji Amrillo Sauce. The roll was tasty, unique and the glazed mango was a beautiful touch.

Honey Moon @ Ikura Sushi Lounge

The Honey Moon Roll was really the only dish we did not love. It had Ikura Shrimp, Kani-kamaboko, Avocado, Cream Cheese, Shaved Roasted Coconut, Almonds, Walnut Dust, Scallions, Sonali Suce and Hachimitsu. The coconut, almond and walnut dust ingredients enticed us and it was good, but it did not blow our palates out of the water.

Tom-Atu Heat @ Ikura Sushi Lounge

The Tom-Atu Heat Roll was by far our favorite of the night. It was literally mouth-watering. This sublime roll is baked and contains Ikura Shrimp, Cream Cheese, Walnuts Dust, Eel Sauce and is topped with the amazing Kanikama Crunch appetizer. It is a triumphant roll that we will definitely drive down to Coral Gables to sample again.

The sushi is scrumptious, bountiful (read: large ass pieces) and there is an abundance of them on the plate. The place is small, but the waiter was always attentive as well as gracious. The prices are reasonable too, with most specialty rolls in the $15 range. It was a sheer delight Ikura and we shall be back again.

Miami Bridge’s Notte di Carnevale

Miami Bridge Hosts a Fantastic Notte de Carnavale at the JW Marriot Marquis

Miami-Bridge-62

In Miami, February is Gala month. There are galas for cancer, diabetes and any other major cause you can think of. There was one that really touched our hearts and it was the fabulous Notte di Carnevale party that was thrown to benefit Miami Bridge Youth and Family Services. For over two decades, this benevolent organization has run Dade County’s only 24-hour emergency shelter for at-risk youth providing emergency shelter, food and counseling. They strive to rescue children and teens from lives of victimization and crime, and provide them with structure in a stable and nurturing environment. Miami Bridge helps more than 700 youths every year, providing them with solutions, alternatives and real hope. We applaud their efforts and were eager to show our support.

The party was held at the rooftop of the Downtown J.W. Marriott Marquis with a whimsical Carnival of Venice theme. The decor was beautiful and the food was delicious. There was a delectable buffet which included a menagerie of succulent crustaceans, mini pad thais, pork and steak carving stations and scrumptious banana foster. We met a handful of sweet, fun, do-gooding, down-to-earth people. Guests enjoyed a night of dancing with an amazing soundtrack provided by DJ Lazaro. In addition to the silent auction, there was also some unique and festive entertainment on hand for the guests. There was a fortune teller, a caricature artist and an awesome booth where a 6-second video was shot and then turned into a really cute flip book. We had a great time making our video.

We really enjoyed supporting the cause and will definitely be adding it to our rotation of charities we love. Hope to see you there next year.

The London Souls’ unique reinterpretation of classic hard-hitting rock and roll formulae recalls elements of the past with an ever-present boundless energy, fit to cement their place in the future.
Tash and Chris have been nothing short of a best-kept-secret among New York City concertgoers since the band’s formation in 2008, building a fervent and dynamic fan base leveraged by their ever-substantiated reputation for consistently well-rehearsed and impassioned, explosive live performances. The band’s celebrated sound and spirit draws significant influence from the driving force of British rock pioneers Cream and Led Zeppelin, to billowing and bouncing funk and soul, to the layered harmonies and memorable hooks of The Beatles and The Hollies, to the contemporary psychedelia of My Morning Jacket among many more.

Hosting a business networker within an art show is a unique way to encourage socializing. Some events include live performances and other surprises!

Ernie Novo
My practice is primarily concerned with universal aspects of the human condition. Statements which hold true to all people anywhere in the world at any time. I am interested in the essence of what it is to be a sentient being so as to inspire greater self-awareness and harmony.

Gustavo Ramirez
I am a self-taught artist that is deeply influenced by the American Abstract Expressionists (Gorky, Hoffman, Pollock, de Kooning, Rothko, and Newman), Post-Impressionist van Gogh and the Neo-expressionists (Guston, Schnabel, and Basquiat). I believe fine art should be available and affordable to the common everyday person.

Jennifer Maria
Jennifer Maria grew up painting and drawing before immersing herself into photography. She intended to use her photographs as references for her paintings, but ended up falling in love with the process of creating and capturing with a camera. She produces mostly digital photography, however, she also delights in creating with black & white film. She happily engages much time, love & care into creating silver gelatin prints in her darkroom. She continues to paint– primarily on canvas, though she also enjoys utilizing the human body as canvas. Jennifer Maria draws inspiration from many sources: her dreams, her loved ones, travels, the ocean and more.

For the opening of his solo exhibition, Imagined Landscapes, Miami-based, Haitian-born artist Edouard Duval-Carrié discusses his new work with PAMM Chief Curator Tobias Ostrander.

The dialog will address Duval Carrié’s shift in aesthetic, using an uncharacteristically dark palate, as well as how he translates his references, 19th century paintings depicting Florida and the Caribbean, into his own contemporary visual language. The artist’s response to the role of images of tropical paradise, both historically and today, in obscuring economic and social disparities will emerge from the conversation.

Free with museum admission. No registration required.
Seating begins at 6pm.
Space is limited. First come, first seated.

Every third Thursday evening, PAMM brings together an eclectic range of internationally-acclaimed DJs and musicians for an outdoor music series on the terrace by the bay. This month, PAMM Presents Brooklyn-based duo Gatekeeper.

Inspired by the sounds and visions of forgotten b-movie film scores, classic fantasy games and lurid arcade imagery, the duo of Aaron David Ross and Matthew Arkell have created their own morbidly compelling discotheque, a vividly detailed flight of fancy in which the conventions of techno, Chicago house, italo-disco and industrial are transfigured into a singular phantasmagoric adventure populated by hushed screams, Gregorian dungeon chants and cinematic washes of mammoth sound.

Free with museum admission. Drink specials are available for purchase

Drawing from an expanding palette of innovative sounds, these musicians instrumentalize breath, mouth, and vocal chords to engage the physicality, variation, and sensuousness of the non-lyrical voice. C. Spencer Yeh (Brooklyn) and Stine Janvin Motland (Oslo/Berlin) improvise and compose, using the voice as a sound-making device that lies outside of speech acts and traditional modes of singing.

Established artists among a younger generation of experimental musicians, Motland and Yeh’s practices have historical precedence in movements of musique concrete, and perhaps sound poetry. Their use of non-linguistic vocal sounds in composition and improvisation may be compared to the approaches of concrete poets, who sought to elevate text above that of an impartial actor within the communication process.

Performance 7-8pm (seating begins 6:30pm)

Free with museum admission. Space is limited. First come, first seated.

It was all about the Margaritas to celebrate National Margarita Day with El Jimador Tequila by Betty Alvarez

El Jimador Tequila was proud to represent National Margarita Day on February 22 with the final event of a two week long competition that took place at the Wynwood hotspot known as The Social Lubricant Lounge.

Five Mixologists from five of South Florida’s most well-known venues battled it out at the Social Lubricant Lounge to find out who made Miami’s best Spicy Margarita!

The Five South Florida locations and their head mixologists include:
-TWIST represented by Nathan Smith,
-Baires Grill represented by Plamen Atanasov,
-The Social Lubricant Lounge represented by Ronaldo Shehadeh,
-Tarpon Bend represented by Christopher Garcia,
-TequiztLan Mexican Restaurant represented by Stephanie Ortiz.

The finale event served to engage with consumers in a unique way that encourages them to enjoy el Jimador in a truly dynamic array of settings. DJ Miik presided over the turntables as guests got a Mixology Lesson where they learned how to make simple cocktails which can be easily reproduced in the comfort of their home or when out on the town. During this experience, they literally poured, shaked, and served up their very own take on the perfect el Jimador Margarita!

Adding to the fun, guests were part of different stations to include the “Shake and Bite,” “Mixology Lab,” and “Social Mixology Demo” where once they’ve learned to make a delicious cocktail, they presented it via a brief digital video that they can quickly post to their social media platform. Immediately, they were able to share their personal recipe with friends and followers. The grand finale of the event was the announcement of the winner of the best el Jimador Spicy Margarita in South Florida!

Equality Florida Miami Gala Voice For Equality Award to Actress Sharon Gless 3/16/14

Equality Florida Miami Gala Voice For Equality Award to Actress Sharon Gless
Sunday, March 16, 6 PM
Pérez Art Museum Miami
1103 Biscayne Blvd
Miami, FL
Tickets are $150, with sponsorships beginning at $500.  For tickets or further information, go to www.eqfl.org/miamigala, or call (813) 870-3735.

On Sunday, March 16, Equality Florida Institute will present the Voice for Equality Award to multi- award-winning actress Sharon Gless and the six couples who have joined Equality Florida Institute as plaintiffs in a lawsuit to overturn Florida’s ban on marriage equality.  The awards recognize the recipients’ steadfast commitment to LGBT equality and will be presented at the Equality Florida Miami Gala at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, 1103 Biscayne Boulevard.
In a year that has seen many landmark milestones and victories, the Gala will provide the LGBT community and their allies a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the momentum that is building throughout the state and throughout the nation.

“My role in Queer as Folk was a life-changer for me,” said Gless.  “I thought I was totally aware of what it must be like to be gay.  I knew nothing.  Being ostracized; not being given the same rights that I enjoy.  It’s insane.  I knew then that I wanted to become active and do what I could to help. Everyone should be treated equally and be given the same privileges – including the right to marry.”

A part-time resident of South Florida for more than 20 years, multiple Emmy and Golden Globe winner Sharon Gless has been a vocal advocate for the LGBT community for many years.  In 2013 she took a leading role in Equality Florida’s Get Engaged campaign, a statewide public education campaign to build support for marriage equality in Florida.  She served as Grand Marshal in the Miami Beach Pride Parade, received the Gay Icon Award at Philadelphia QFest, the PFLAG Ally award in Toronto and was honored by L.A.’s Gay & Elder Housing.  Norman Lear’s People for the American Way also recognized her for her unwavering support of human rights and she is an active participant in the ongoing struggle to prevent the overturn of Roe vs. Wade.

"There are many celebrities who call Florida home, and we call on them to join Sharon Gless in publicly expressing their support for equality," said Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida. "We are at a tipping point in the movement for LGBT equality, and the voice of allies like Sharon Gless can make a huge difference in educating the public."

Following last summer’s historic Supreme Court decision on DOMA, Equality Florida issued a call for potential plaintiffs to join with Equality Florida in a lawsuit seeking marriage equality in Florida.  More than 1,000 people responded by signing on to GetEngaged.org.  Following months of vetting and personal interviews, the six plaintiff couples were chosen.  They are:  Catherina Pareto & Karla Arguello, Dr. Juan Carlos Rodriguez & David Price, Vanessa & Melanie Alenier, Todd & Jeff Delmay, Summer Greene & Pamela Faerber, and Don Price Johnston & Jorge Isaias Diaz.

“These six couples have committed to a life in the spotlight, putting themselves and their families under intense scrutiny as the court case progresses,” said Nadine Smith.  “They are brave, and they are courageous, taking this important step so that they, and thousands of other couples in Florida, will have the right to marry the person he or she loves.”

As the community celebrates the milestones already achieved throughout the state, Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida, will present perhaps one of the most significant State-of-the-State addresses ever, honoring those who have worked so hard to make these achievements a reality, as well as outlining the work that is yet to be done.

Guests will also enjoy sumptuous hors d’oeuvres and an open bar, along with music from Grammy award-winning saxophonist Felipe Lamoglia, all taking place on the expansive terrace with panoramic views of Biscayne Bay.

Recognized as an “architectural tour de force,” the Pérez Art Museum is the ideal venue for the Miami Gala, which has blossomed into a “must attend” event that brings together nearly 500 of South Florida’s community and political influencers.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences presents the Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Leah Brown at University of Miami Art Gallery at the Wynwood Building.

Borderland is a dreamlike, sculptural installation with sound where the exhibition is presented as both a metaphor for the unconscious mind and as an experience of an alternate reality where the viewer assumes the roles of actor and audience. Here, radially oriented objects appear to be simultaneously human, animal, and landscape.  The gallery walls are presented as a space becoming conscious of itself, personified as an oversized figure achieving lucidity. The audio in the space is a recording of Brown’s voice orating an automatic text created within the gallery as part of her process of inhabiting the realm between conscious and unconscious states.

Leah Brown is a sculptor and installation artist, whose object-oriented work questions the hierarchical structures imposed on reality. Brown was born in Washington DC, raised in the mountains of North Carolina, and currently lives and works in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  She received her BFA with honors from the Rhode Island School of Design, and is an MFA Candidate in Sculpture from the University of Miami. In 2013 she received the prestigious South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship.  In addition to her studio practice, Leah is co-curator of the FATVillage Arts District in Ft Lauderdale, FL, where she oversees the curation of the FATVillage Projects Contemporary Art Space.
