Hanukah Haiku featuring Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad

Next@19th (137 NE 19th Street, Miami)
Tel: 305.542.7732
www.nextat19th.org

Next@19th proudly presents a night of creativity, humor and entertainment with Hanukah Haiku and Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad. On the brightest and last night of Hanakuh, poets, artists and writers will come together to share original haikus about Hanukah and Jewish culture at Next@19th in downtown Miami. Slated for December 8, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., this celebration also marks the official launch of the non-profit organization, whose goal is to move Jewish culture forward with an inclusive, cutting-edge program.

“I put the whore in hora,” declares the Goddess Perlman, ringmaster and MC extraordinaire of Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad – and so goes an evening of bashing all stereotypes ever uttered about Jewish women. Bringing a combination of comedy, parody and burlesque to South Florida on the last and brightest day of Hanukkah, please find below details of Next@19th’s holiday celebration.

Burlesque entertainers Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad bring a combination of parody and burlesque to the night: a refreshing mix of comedy, cabaret and spoken-word with must-have archetypal characters including the gals who learned to smoke at Hebrew School, got drunk at their Bat Mitzvahs and would rather have more schtuppa than the chupah. In keeping with the theme of the party He’Brew, ‘The Chosen Beer,’ will be on tap throughout the night.

This event will kick-off Next@19th’s 2010 – 2011 season, which includes regularly-programmed thought-provoking and fun events. Arts, learning and spirituality happenings will unite cultural traditions, beliefs and introduce new facets of the Jewish identity. Next@19th’s dynamic program takes an inclusive approach to sharing Judaism with members of any faith or background.

About Next@19th: Moving Jewish Culture Forward
Next@19th was founded in July 2010 to engage South Florida’s diverse community in fresh culture, learning and spiritual experience through a Jewish lens. Producing original programming, the organization will host a range of events and activities. This 2010 – 2011 season promises celebrations of music, literary arts, visual art, education and spirituality as well as dynamic projects in partnership with Miami Book Fair International, the Jewish Film Festival and University of Wynwood. Next@19th is located at 137 NE 19 Street, Miami FL 33132, on the campus of Temple Israel’s historic site in downtown Miami. Impromedy Presents Get Big at the Roxy Performing Arts Center 7/30-8/20/10

Impromedy Presents Get Big at the Roxy Performing Arts Center
An all-new sketch and improv show from South Florida’s premiere comedy company
Fridays from July 30 to August 20, 2010. Doors Open 8:30 PM
$10 General Admission / $8 with Student ID

This month, Impromedy proves once and for all that bigger is better with their all-new sketch and improv comedy show Get Big at the Roxy Performing Arts Center (1645 SW 107th Ave, Miami, FL 33165).
Get Big is a unique and uproariously funny blend of original sketch (think Saturday Night Live, Mad TV) and improv (think Who’s Line is it Anyway?) comedy by South Florida’s top improv performers. So what is improv comedy? It’s comedy made up right before your very eyes. No scripts, no memorized dialogue, no rehearsed scenes: just crazy ideas, tons of energy, and your suggestions. And that means: BIG audience, BIG funny!
Watch in amazement as Impromedy players (who have trained at The Second City, Upright Citizens Brigade, and Improv Olympic) bring audience suggestions to life on stage while also giving practical diet and exercise tips, like*:
· How to use the Shake Weight™ as a powerful and effective tool for building muscle mass.
· Why tripling the FDA-recommended daily servings of red meat can actually make you leaner and stronger.
· How to take your workout clothes from daytime to date night in a pinch.

So, if you have considered ordering the 48 oz. porterhouse from Shula’s Steakhouse… Or you have ever attempted the P90X™ workout series… Or you’re just in the mood for some BIG laughs this weekend… Don’t miss Get Big!

Visit www.impromedymiami.com for a calendar of upcoming shows, cast bios, video, and more.

An All-New Sketch & Improv Show from South Florida’s Premiere Comedy Company

Instead of heading to the movies this weekend, why not cuddle up with a good book? Wait. Scratch that. Instead of cuddling up with a good book this weekend, why not head to Impromedy’s all-new sketch and improv comedy show STFU! This is a Library at the Roxy Performing Arts Center?

STFU! is a unique and uproariously funny blend of original sketch (think Saturday Night Live, Mad TV) and improv (think Who’s Line is it Anyway?) comedy by South Florida’s top improv performers. So what is improv comedy? It’s comedy made up right before your very eyes. No scripts, no memorized dialogue, no rehearsed scenes: just crazy ideas, tons of energy, and your suggestions. No audience, no funny!

Watch in amazement as Impromedy players (who have trained at The Second City, Upright Citizens Brigade, and Improv Olympic) bring audience suggestions to life on stage and answer their most burning literary queries, like, “What would happen if Green Eggs and Ham was an action movie?” STFU! takes audience members on a hysterical tour of the library, if your librarians were Tina Fey and Dane Cook.

So, if you wish you read the classics in high school instead of picking up the Cliff Notes… Or if you hate it when your boss references famous literary characters that go right over your head (“Son, you remind me of a young Captain Ahab.”)… Or if your personal library consists solely of the film adaptations of Nicholas Sparks’ novels… Don’t miss STFU! This is a Library!* We can’t promise you’ll learn anything, but you sure will have fun!

*STFU! This is a Library is not a legitimate alternative to summer school/SAT prep classes/or reading the newspaper.

Sex and the Animals 2/14/09

“Sex and the Animals”
Saturday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Listed as a “Best Bet” by The Miami Herald, Ron Magill’s entertaining and informative presentation “Sex and the Animals” has been enjoyed by thousands. Through interesting biofacts and an amazing variety of images, Magill illustrates the incredible facts surrounding the courtship and breeding behaviors found throughout the animal kingdom. Dealing with everything from frogs to elephants, this program is “education through entertainment” in the best sense of the term. Magill uses humor to keep the audience loose as he presents the wonders of nature, giving a whole new meaning to the term, “doing the wild thing.” Tickets for the presentation at Miami Metrozoo are $30 ($25 for Zoological Society members), including wine and cheese. An optional dinner at Amazon & Beyond is available for an additional charge.

Marga Gomez Long Island Iced Latina 1/21/09

Marga Gomez Long Island Iced Latina

Wednesday, January 21, 2009, 7:30pm
Colony Theater
1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL

One of America’s first openly Queer comics, GLAAD and Ovation award winner Marga has been seen on LOGO and Comedy Central. In Long Island Iced Latina, Marga pours a long tall drink of cultural confusion, chronic virginity and mother daughter instability. What begins as a hilariously dark memoir of Gomez as the only brown girl in a white high school morphs into an intoxicating manifesto for Latinos who can’t speak Spanish, suck at Salsa, and suffer from Blonditis.

In Long Island Iced Latina, Marga Gomez pours a long tall drink of cultural confusion, chronic virginity and mother daughter instability. What begins as a hilariously dark memoir of Gomez as the only brown girl in a white high school morphs into an intoxicating manifesto for Latinos who can’t speak Spanish, suck at Salsa, and suffer from Blonditis. “We’re everywhere!” Gomez claims. “And we vote!”

Marga Gomez, who as been described as a “Latina Lily Tomlin” and as a “Lesbian Larry the Cable Guy,” is the winner of the GLAAD Award for Off-Broadway Theater and a Drama Desk Award nominee. She is the writer /performer of five critically acclaimed solo plays and two others that weren’t too bad. Gomez is also one of America’s first openly gay comedians with appearances on LOGO network, Comedy Central and PBS. For her third engagement with Miami Light Project, Gomez will serve up Long Island Iced Latina a new solo comedy that sold out Joe’s Pub as part of Teatro Stagefest in 2007.
