That’s Funny… You Don’t look Jewish
Lisa was raised Catholic but converted to Judaism because it’s the same guilt but with 20 percent off at Macy’s. What Lisa loved mostly about becoming Jewish was that all the religious ceremonies take place at sundown and she is not a morning person. Landry is an utterly likable and down-to-earth comic who is incredibly easy to relate to. The Louisiana native will leave you laughing, relating and wanting to take her home to meet your son…

Labor Days DVD Release Showcase

By Ari Kane

The stars of the award-winning web series “Labor Days” performed in a special comedy showcase celebrating the “Labor Days – Season One” DVD release.  “Labor Days” features some of South Florida’s funniest comedians and we saw them live at the Miami Improv for a special ONE NIGHT ONLY comedy showcase! We will highlight some of our favorite performers.

Lisa Corrao joked about how she recently moved back in to her parents house and now envies the homeless for their dignity. She also compared her vagina to a boat because some people are only friends with her because she has one and it requires thousands of dollars of maintenance and is only used like once a month.

Kirk Meadows who sounds like Mike Tyson’s adorable gay cousin, killed it too. He joked about how he calls his daughter “Misty” because she was a mistake and his daughter calls him “Pop” because that is what happened to the condom. He also joked about how McDonald’s gives their employees one premium parking spot to share but, on a McDonald’s salary, nobody can afford a car.

Lando Leyba was also superb telling a hilarious story about being pulled over by a bicycle cop and was afraid that if he got arrested he would have to ride the handle bars into the station. He also discussed how he got a BJ coupon from his wife for his birthday and how some fools wait, but he cashed that shit in right away.

Our friend, Forrest Shaw was poignantly funny (as usual) discussing how it would be great if the TV shows “Intervention” and “Hoarders” were combined so a crack head would move into a hoarder’s place and clean that travesty of a mess out in a couple weeks. Lets put our resourceful Crackheads to good use.

The show was a riotous laugh and we can’t wait to see all of these guys (and Lisa) again. Good Luck in La-La-Land Forrest.  Just remember, no matter what the casting guy tells you, you do not have to toss salad to land a gig.

About Labor Days

labor-daysLabor Days is a comedy series that follows the misadventures of the worst day labor crew in town.  In a stroke of monumental bad luck (usually reserved for tv shows), John loses his job, his fiancee’, and his car.  Depressed and desperate for money, he decides to join a day labor crew. John soon discovers that working with this wacky crew is far from normal as they tackle the whims of crazy and demanding clients. From cleaning up after a hoarder to sewing campaign t-shirts for an anti-immigration politician, these goofballs will do anything for a buck.  This crew is chasing the American Dream one day job at a time.

Labor Days recently screened at the Independent Film Quarterly film festival in Los Angeles and was also accepted into the 2013 Hollyweb Festival.

Labor Days is created by John Wynn and written by Wynn and Forrest Shaw. The series stars John Wynn, Forrest Shaw, Kirk Meadows, Orlando Leyba, and Lisa Corrao.

Labor Days recently won awards at the 2013 LA Webfest for Outstanding Achievements – Comedy Writing and Comedy Web Series.

Miami’s Ultimate Comedian Forrest Shaw Crowned

Emmy nominated comedian, Jon Lovitz, performed at the Ultimate Miami Comedian competition where finalists competed for a cash prize of $5,000 and the title of the Ultimate Miami Comedian.  The event took place on Friday, May 3 at 9pm at  Stage 305 at Magic City Casino.  The panel of judges at the Ultimate Miami Comedian included Where Magazine South Florida editor, Aurora Rodriguez and radio personality and co-host of 610AM WIOD’s South Florida’s First News, Manny Munoz.

Forrest Shaw killed it, he was absolutely hilarious, joking about the onerous cost of organic food ( Do I want the $2 poisoned grapes or the $20 non lethal grapes….) and how his cock looks now compared to 20 years ago.  He earned the cash he took home that night without having to resort to sexual favors. This heralded local comic who has toured the country opening for the deliriously funny Jim Jefferies will be moving to LA and will be sorely missed. We have a feeling we will see this funny bastard in the national spotlight quite soon. Good Luck Forrest.

Miami Light Project is proud to present the return of funnyman and musician extraordinaire, Reggie Watts in an exclusive engagement at The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse, June 6-8, 2013.

Hilarious, brilliant, unpredictable – comedian/musician Reggie Watts is a staple of the international performance scene. Reggie’s improvised musical sets are created on-the-spot using only his formidable voice and a looping machine. No two songs are ever the same. An avowed “disinformationist,” Reggie loves to disorientate his audiences in the most entertaining way. You may not know what Reggie is going to do, but that’s okay – he doesn’t either.

As a solo performer, Reggie was handpicked by Conan O’Brien to open nightly on Conan’s entire North American “Prohibted From Being Funny on Television” tour. Reggie was featured as “Hot Comedian” in Rolling Stone’s Hot Issue 2010, named SPIN Magazine’s “Best New Comedian” and “Best of CMJ” 2010, and a featured profile in GQ’s Man Of The Year issue 2010. Reggie released his debut comedy cd/dvd ‘Why $#!+ So Crazy?’ on Comedy Central Records in May 2010. He has a new album entitled ‘Reggie Watts Live at Third Man Records’ which will be available limited edition vinyl Spring 2011.

On screen, Reggie has appeared on The Conan O’Brien Show, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, HBO’s The Yes Men Save The World, Comedy Central’s Michael and Michael Have Issues, Iceland TV, UK’s “Funny Or Die,” PBS’ revamped Electric Company and the music video “What About Blowjobs?” for College Humor. Reggie can also be seen in short comedic interstitials during Comedy Central’s late night block and has a pilot for the channel in the works.

As a musician, Reggie recorded the EP Pot Cookies through Normative Records, sang on Regina Spektor’s “Dance Anthem of the 80s” and contributed two tracks to DFA Records’ Spaghetti Circus. Also the frontman for Seattle rock outfit Maktub, Reggie and his band released five albums. Reggie recorded original music featured on Louis CK’s show on FX and performed the theme song for Kristin Schaal’s “Penelope Princess of Pets” show.

This May 10 & 11, 2013, you won’t want to miss the premiere of the conclusion of Miami-based performer Rudi Goblen’s theatrical trilogy, delving into themes of love, suicide and belonging.

Miami Light Project is proud to present the world premiere of PET, a new theater work written and choreographed by Miami-based actor/writer/choreographer, Rudi Goblen and directed by Michael Yawney.

PET is an interactive physical one man theatre piece set in a support group meeting for ex-lovers/serial monogamist built from an array of interviews and shared experiences of the broken-hearted. Drawing from a repository of human emotions, fears, hopes, dreams and instincts; while forging a blend of movement, speech and actions to tell its stories – PET deals with the complexities of relationships, love, and lack thereof.

southebeachcomedyfestivalSouth Beach Comedy Festival returns to Miami Beach Wednesday, April 17th to Sunday, April 21st, for another stellar comedy showcase featuring some of the world’s most favorite entertainers. Now in its eighth year, the South Beach Comedy Festival continues to grow and remains one of the premiere comedy festivals for top comedic talent and fans across the country. This year’s event features Bill Burr, Jamel Debouzze, Pete Holmes, Jim Jefferies, Seth Meyers, Tracy Morgan, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman and much, much more. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 1st at 10AM through www.southbeachcomedyfestival.com, www.livenation.com, the Fillmore Box Office, all TicketMaster outlets or charge-by-phone: 1-800-745-3000.

Comedy Central and Live Nation also welcome back sponsors Taco Bell, The Miami Beach Visitors and Convention Authority, and The Miami Herald all for their 8th year as well as Deco Drive and new sponsor Freecreditscore.com.

Once again the Festival will utilize multiple locations to highlight its exciting variety of talent. Acts will perform at the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre, 1700 Washington Avenue; Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Road; and the unique BACKSTAGE at the Fillmore. The Lincoln Road Stage at Euclid Avenue will also serve as the home to the Festival’s outdoor, nightly, free comedy stage every evening from Thursday through Saturday at 9PM.

The Festival begins on Wednesday, April 17th, 8PM with Bill Burr at the Fillmore Miami Beach. Bill Burr is one of the top comedic voices of his generation achieving success in TV and film as well as the live stage. Selling out theaters internationally, Burr is a regular with Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon. His Monday Morning Podcast is one of the most downloaded comedy podcasts on iTunes. Tickets are $45.50 and $35.50.

Seth Meyers performs Thursday, April 18th, 8PM at the Fillmore Miami Beach. As the head writer and sole “Weekend Update” anchor on Saturday Night Live for the past 6 years, Meyers charms audiences as he lampoons top news stories and entertains fan favorite guests. Meyers won the Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for host Justin Timberlake’s musical monologue. He was nominated in same category in 2012 for host Jason Segel’s monologue song. Meyers has also garnered five additional Emmy nominations for his work as a writer on SNL and the 2011 special “The Real Women of SNL.” Tickets are $37.50.

Appearing Thursday, April 18th, 8PM at the Colony Theater is Anjelah Johnson. Johnson became an internet sensation with her viral video “Nail Salon” which led to many stand up and performance opportunities. That same year she joined the cast of MADtv as a series regular, which spawned another internet sensation “Bon Qui Qui.” This original character, a disgruntled fast food employee with no filter, has been enjoyed, viewed and replicated by over fifty-five million people worldwide. In June 2009 Anjelah recorded a one-hour special for Comedy Central and Warner Brothers Records. A second special is set to be released from her hometown of San Jose, CA this year. Tickets are $35.00.
Tracy Morgan takes center stage at the Fillmore on Friday, April 19th, 8PM. As a stand-up comic who has headlined across the country, Morgan was first introduced to television audiences in his role as “Hustleman” on the hit comedy series “Martin.” He went on to join “Saturday Night Live” in 1996 where he appeared for seven seasons and created such memorable characters as “Astronaut Jones” and “Brian Fellows.” After leaving SNL, Morgan went on to star in his own comedy series “The Tracy Morgan Show”. He has just finished up his most memorable role as the hilarious and mercurial Tracy Jordan on the award-winning NBC comedy series “30 Rock” co-starring with Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin. Tickets are $45.50 and $35.50.

Appearing Friday April 19th, 8PM at the Colony Theatre is Amy Schumer who is returning from her sold-out show at last year’s Festival. Schumer was recently featured as one of Variety’s “Top Ten Comics to Watch” and her hit one-hour special, titled “Amy Schumer: Mostly Sex Stuff,” aired on Comedy Central and was one of the highest-rated and most-watched stand-up specials in 2012 with over 1.6 million total viewers watching the premiere. In 2011, she released her first album “Cutting” on Comedy Central Records. Her new series “Inside Amy Schumer,” premieres Tuesday, April 30 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central and features Schumer’s provocative and hilariously wicked mind as she explores topics revolving around sex, relationships, and the general clusterf*ck that is life through a series of scripted vignettes, stand-up comedy and man-on-the street interviews. Tickets are $35.00.

Sarah Silverman performs Saturday, April 20th, 8PM at the Fillmore Miami Beach. Emmy winner Sarah Silverman, dubbed by Rolling Stone “the most outrageously funny woman alive,” is as versatile of a performer as they come. Her repertoire includes everything from film and television, stand-up comedy, to iconic online videos, and she added author to this list when she released her first book the New York Times Bestseller, The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee. Silverman was nominated for a Primetime Emmy in the Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series category for her portrayal of a fictionalized version of herself in her Comedy Central series “The Sarah Silverman Program.” This marked Comedy Central’s first ever Emmy nomination in a scripted acting category. Silverman voices a character in the Oscar nominated Disney animated film Wreck it Ralph and was recently seen starring opposite Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen in the dramedy Take This Waltz. Tickets are $59.50, $45.00 and $35.00.

Late night, 10:30PM, on Saturday, April 20th Jim Jefferies takes over the Fillmore stage. One of the most sought after comedians, Jefferies returned this past summer to sold-out performances at Montreal’s Just For Laughs and Edinburgh’s Fringe Comedy Festival. In keeping with his reputation for being brutally honest, Jefferies cleverly subverts our expectation as he takes on topics such as fatherhood, love and education as well as his favourites: religion, porn and politics. He was seen in his Showtime one-hour comedy special Alcoholocaust and his debut Jim Jefferies: I Swear To God on HBO. His bold and painfully honest commentary captivated all who tuned in. Tickets are $35.50.

Finally on Sunday, April 21st, 7PM Jamel Debouzze takes the Fillmore stage for his first live performance in the

US, and the entire show will be in French. As a youth he participated in several improv contests such as the World Amateur Improvisation Championship in Quebec. In 1997, at only 17 years old, he got his first role in the cinema. This marked the beginning of a long series of movies such as Amélie, a film by Jean Pierre Jeunet, and Asterix & Obelix Meet Cleopatra, for which he was nominated for a César Award for best actor in a supporting role. Jamel continued to perform live on tour but also in the most beautiful Parisians venues such as the mythic Olympia. In July 2006, Debouzze created “Jamel’s Comedy Club”, a TV show taped in his theater that highlights new talent. In 2011 Jamel made his big return to the stage with a whole new show called “All About Jamel”. As the title says, he unveiled everything about himself, broaching events from his life with the humor and expressiveness that characterize him. Tickets are $75.50, $55.50 and $35.50.

There will also be exciting performances at the intimate BACKSTAGE at the Fillmore venue which brings attendees up close and personal with the performers.

First on Wednesday, April 17th the popular Mad Cat Theater Company presents two performances at 7 and 9:30PM. This time Mad Cat company member, Jessica Farr has written a new play “Charming Acts of Misery” that follows the ups and downs of fashion muse Isabella Blow (1958-2007) known to most for her brazen individual style and for discovering Alexander McQueen. Spanning several decades, this whirligig ride into Isabella’s life traverses both the fashion scene and the underpinnings of its central character’s psyche. We follow “Issi” through the jungles of Sri Lanka, New York City and London until the lines between her public and private life become intensely blurred. Get ready South Beach and put a hat on it! Directed by Paul Tei. This is a fundraiser for the Company and tickets are $45.00 (VIP) and $25.00 in advance. On the day of the show tickets are $30.00 and $50.00 (VIP) available at the box office only.

Then on Friday, April 19th, 8PM, Joey “Coco” Diaz takes the stage. Sometimes it takes a huge movie role or a part in a popular television series to put a stand-up comedian on the radar; with Diaz it was a #1 comedy album on iTunes and Billboard. Diaz has appeared in numerous films and television shows but his storytelling on the extremely popular podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience” really showcased one of the funniest comedians working today. Diaz’ R-rated outlook on life will get you howling in your seats but that’s what a good comedian is supposed to do. What makes him special is his ability to tell a story so that regardless of the subject matter, you’re still laughing. Whether it’s lighting a hooker’s wig on fire, or attacking a nun in the 5th grade, you’ll be cheering for him. Tickets are $20.00.

Pete Holmes performs on Saturday, April 20th, 8PM. Celebrated Comedian Jim Gaffigan Brings Hilarity to Seminole Casino Coconut Creek 10/11/12

Get ready to laugh until it hurts as popular comedian Jim Gaffigan takes the stage at The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 9 p.m. One of the top comics touring today, he consistently sells out multiple nights at huge theaters across the country with his original and entertaining skits.

Gaffigan’s comedy routines often include humorous, high-pitched "asides" representing commentary on his performance from a hypothetical naive and easily offended audience member. South Floridians can also expect hilarious jokes about being lazy and fast food, as some of his best known and most popular skits are based on America’s obsession with eating.

In 2004 Gaffigan’s stand up material was featured in Comedy Central’s animated series Shorties Watchin’ Shorties. His 2006 album, Beyond the Pale, was accompanied by an hour-long special of the same name on Comedy Central and released on DVD. His 2009 album, King Baby, was also a television special filmed in Austin, Texas at the end of his "The Sexy Tour." Beloved by a wide range of audiences, Gaffigan has achieved many accolades and awards for his stand-up, acting and writing. He is responsible for some of the funniest and most memorable moments in comedy today and has seen huge success with his albums.

Gaffigan has also made many appearances on television throughout his career. He was a regular on That ‘70s Show and Ed, a cast member of the TBS original sitcom My Boys, as well as a guest star on HBO’s Flight of the Conchords and on two Law & Order episodes. In addition, he has acted in several films over the years, including Super Troopers, 13 Going On 30, Trust the Man, The Love Guru, 17 Again and many others. He even produced a series of animated shorts for Late Night With Conan O’Brien, titled Pale Force, in which the animated Gaffigan and O’Brien are superheroes who fight crime with their extremely pale skin.

Most recently, Gaffigan taped an all-new 75-minute stand-up special Mr. Universe in Washington, D.C. and announced that it would be available online through his website with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Bob Woodruff Foundation, helping veterans and their families. Mr. Universe offers Gaffigan musing, in typical Gaffigan form, about everything from having a fourth child and (not) working out to how fat whales are for animals who constantly ‘work out’ by swimming to fast food outlets of all kinds.

Cirque du Soleil Dralion

New Year’s Eve 2010 I went to see Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza in downtown Miami. A few days later I was trolling around on Twitter and met my friend Ofelia over some of her photos of the event. We have other things in common, but our love of Cirque du Soleil still rides high in the book.

So when we saw that the Circus was coming to Bank Atlantic Center a few months ago, we coordinated to go with our families on the same day, and as it turned out, she and her husband and son were even seated in the same section as my wife and me. Yes, of course we started the afternoon off with an awesome meal at the Grand Lux Cafe at Sawgrass Mills Mall. Guess what? All Hispanics aren’t fashionably late, despite what you might have heard. And the mega rain was truly an excuse this time, not needed.

Anyway, I know this is about the show, but let me give a thumbs up for the restaurant. The reservation for 4 I gave yesterday was an unplanned test when I showed with 5 today. Way to handle it perfectly! My BBQ Baby Back Ribs were spectacular. And that creative slaw, fries and corn bread you baked were fabulous. Everyone else loved their food too! Thank you for not bitching or rolling your eyes when I asked you to split the already un-split check. I will be back! And I digged the dressy gators out front of the restaurant.

Bank Atlantic Center. Premium parking is a rip! For $45 I’d arrive in a limo with a hooker the escort we saw some fat dude with. Well even the $20 basic parking was a rip-off, but it was raining hard. Thank God, NO RED. I’m a Flyers fan. Our friend’s son had to chug his Gatorade or dump it before passing security. Jeez. Oh, now I see why? Gatorades are $5 yet still better priced than the $9 Heineken pounders. I bought nothing inside. My wife decided she needed a $5 coffee, but OK, nothing.

The show started promptly, as usual, with the Clowns joking around with the audience. Pretty standard, comic relief, and lots of laughs. (Do they do that in other cities or just in Miami where inconsiderate people show up to a professional show 20-30 minutes late? This isn’t a little league game). They also of course picked out one unsuspecting dude from the audience to get picked on. Very good sport.

The first half of the show was a little slow to be honest. Obviously the skills were difficult for every event, but Cirque has a very high standard to reach for the guy who’s seen a lot of them. Other audience members agreed. I overheard at least 3 or 4 dudes in the enormous dude restroom line say the same thing. Best part was the trampoline act where two guys and two gals took turns flipping off the roof of a house, running up walls, narrowly missing each other, back and forth drama. All the while, a woman sang in the middle of them on a balcony. Great choreography, no collisions, really cool.

The juggler had a rough day today. He started off with some sweet moves, rolling the balls around his body. He did some kind of ball break-dance with his arms and hands, also very cool. He had an assistant giving balls from a rope high above him. What more could a guy want? But his finale, 8 balls, didn’t go awesomely. His first try was the best but he didn’t complete the routine. Three tries. Honestly, I felt the task was impossible, but then again I drink beer and cognac and don’t juggle.  Was a strong routine, regardless!

The first half also sported lots of double-people dragons, which I’m sure took enormous coordination. Big pole balancing guys. There was a guy in an egg that did some rotations around and around, but I think we were expecting fast and not precise muscle moves. And some chick a few rows behind me almost got in deep doo-doo for turning on her cell phone camera toward the end. Jeez, some people.

After intermission, I could feel the people asking for high-energy entries. I felt the second half started slow as well. While I think the lady twirling on the blue curtains was very talented and ballsy, the segment went way too long. But I thought the Yo-yo chicks were absolutely terrific throwing yo-yos into the air, catching them, and a zillion other really cool tricks. High energy, big smiles, and a really amazing performance. My wife and I thought that one was great!

Let’s talk about the clowns. They were entertaining. No doubt, despite their French chatter. And I loved their parody and mocking of all the other performers in one particular skit they did. Was great. Even the “audience member” that we chatted about earlier finally was identified as part of the cast, a clown, yep. And he was so believable at “Average Joe” too! But in the end, the clowns were too much of the show, seriously.

Other favorites from the second half included the “Diving Through Rings” acrobats, very entertaining. And the finale, the Jump Rope dudes, amazing coordination, strength and timing.

Everyone loved the music and the band was introduced during the show as well. Love that they had their “pit” below the house and you could see them and lights from there throughout the show. The singers were great as usual, no doubt about it.

Overall impression: I really enjoyed myself. There is nothing like Cirque du Soleil. There are many other shows I’ve seen that I loved, while this one was just comme ci, comme ça. Happy I went. Merci for reading.

HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher’s irreverent and outspoken host aims to get South Florida talking. For the last 18 years, Bill Maher has set the boundaries of where funny, political talk can go on American television. First on Politically Incorrect (Comedy Central, ABC, 1993-2002), and for the last seven years on HBO’s Real Time, Maher’s combination of unflinching honesty and big laughs have garnered him 27 Emmy nominations.

In October of 2008, this same combination was on display in Maher’s uproarious and unprecedented swipe at organized religion, Religulous, directed by Larry Charles (Borat). The documentary has gone on to become the 7th highest grossing documentary, ever.

In addition to his television program – which has featured such regular visitors as John Edwards, Ben Affleck, Robin Williams, Arianna Huffington, Alec Baldwin and Michael Moore – Maher has written four bestsellers: True Story, Does Anybody Have a Problem with That? Politically Incorrect’s Greatest Hits, When You Ride Alone, You Ride with Bin Laden, New Rules: Polite Musings from a Timid Observer and most recently, The New New Rules: A Funny Look at How Everybody But Me Has Their Head Up Their Ass.

Maher began his career as a stand-up comedian in 1979, and still performs at least 50 dates a year in Las Vegas and in sold-out theaters across the country. Two of his nine stand-up specials for HBO – 2007’s The Decider and 2005’s I’m Swiss – have been nominated for Emmy awards. Maher’s most recent stand-up special for HBO was the hilarious.

His stand-up special, CrazyStupidPolitics LIVE! from Silicon Valley was streamed live on Yahoo.com earlier this year.

Real Time with Bill Maher returns from hiatus for the second half of its 10th season on August 17.

Maher was born in New York City, raised in River Vale, N.J. and went to Cornell University. He now resides in Los Angeles.

After spending several years as a 7th grade public school teacher, Al Jackson decided he was ready to pursue his dream of performing comedy. Jackson delivers his edgy, hard-nosed comedy with a laid-back swagger and a giant smile.

Jackson has been seen on television screens across America, beginning with his appearances on multiple episodes of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” in 2004. NBC went on that year to recognize Jackson as a finalist in their “Stand-Up for Diversity” contest. A featured appearance on Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham” led to a segment on Comedy Central’s “Friday Night Stand-Up” and being named as a national spokesman for Comedy Central’s Address The Mess Campaign to advance awareness of social issues. Al’s other television appearances have been on MTV’s “MVP’s,” a recurring role on “F’N MTV” for the MTV Network as well as a return to NBC on “Last Comic Standing” which included a dedicated five-minute profile segment. Online, Jackson can be found reviewing films for Current TV and the Webby nominated web program, “The Weekly Evil” for Comedy Central. Al Jackson has been heavily featured on XM Radio Comedy Channel 150 since 2006, is a regular guest on the syndicated “Cooper Lawrence Show” and in the spring of 2009 made his debut on the “Opie and Anthony Show” on XM Radio making him part of an elite group of comics invited to sit on the live syndicated program.

Jackson has appeared in numerous competitions and festivals, having won “The Maxim Magazine Real Men of Comedy” contest, as well as reaching the finals of the Boston Comedy Festival. He went on to receive rave reviews for his 2006 performance at the HBO Las Vegas Comedy Festival and in 2009 appeared at the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, Canada where he was recognized as being one of the best of the festival in The Hollywood Reporter. Jackson currently headlines clubs across the country where his brand of comedy has bookers and fans calling for his return time and time again.

Featuring Lewis Black, Donald Glover, Aziz Ansari, Jeff Ross & Much More

South Beach Comedy Festival returns to Miami Beach Wednesday, February 29th to Saturday, March 3rd, for another laugh-filled extravaganza featuring some of the world’s funniest entertainers. Now in its seventh year, the South Beach Comedy Festival, presented by Joe Boxer, continues to grow and remains the premiere comedy festival for top comedic talent and fans across the country. This year’s event features Lewis Black, Donald Glover, Aziz Ansari, Jeff Ross and much, much more. Tickets go on sale Friday, February 3rd at 10AM through www.southbeachcomedyfestival.com, www.livenation.com, the Fillmore Box Office, all TicketMaster outlets or charge-by-phone: 1-800-745-3000.

Live Nation is proud to announce two new sponsors to the festival in 2012, including presenting sponsor Joe Boxer, best known for its irreverent marketing and identifiable product designs, and Slacker Radio, as the official personal radio service of the festival.

Comedy Central and Live Nation also welcome back sponsors Kia Motors (6th year) and Taco Bell (7th year) as well as Schick, The Miami Beach Visitors and Convention Authority, The Miami Herald, the IMPROV and Deco Drive.

The Festival begins on Wednesday, February 29th featuring the World premiere of Will Ferrell’s latest movie, Casa De Mi Padre at the Colony Theatre. Scheming on a way to save their father’s ranch, the Alvarez brothers (Will Ferrell and Diego Luna) find themselves in a war with Mexico’s most feared drug lord (Gael García Bernal). The movie is billed as “from the same Gringos that brought you Anchorman!” This is the first public showing anywhere of the film and admission is by invitation only.

Lewis Black performs Thursday, March 1st, 8PM at the Fillmore Miami Beach. There isn’t any famous person in the world, in or out of politics, who Lewis has not skewered with his rapier wit and fast-paced rantings. Audiences can expect “America’s Foremost Commentator on Everything” to share his opinion on anything and keep them in stitches at the same time. Lewis is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as stand-up comedian, actor and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs over 200 nights a year to sold out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada and The United States. He is one of few performers to sell out multiple, renowned theatres, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center and the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Lewis’ live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. Lewis yells so they don’t have to. A passionate performer who is more pissed-off optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon, Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world. Tickets are $39.50, $49.50 and $75.00 in advance with a $5.00 per ticket increase on day of show.

Shaq’s All-Star Comedy Jam takes center court at the Fillmore on Friday, March 2nd, 8PM. He may have retired from the NBA, but Shaquille O’Neal is still working…hard! Through his company Shaq Entertainment, he has launched the All-Star Comedy Jam tours. “I played with many All-Stars on the court and laughed with these All-Stars off the court,” said Shaq. “I’m happy to present this hand-picked lineup as the Shaq All-Star tour.” The show brings together many of the hilarious comedians presented at Shaq’s All-Star Comedy Jams shot during NBA All-star Weekends over the last three years. The March 2nd lineup includes All-Star comedians Tommy Davidson, Capone and Gary Owen. Tickets are $39.50.

Appearing Friday March 2nd, 8PM at the Colony Theatre are the comedy duo Key & Peele. These fresh, relevant comedic actor-writers, used to being on the outside looking in, examine life in a provocative and irreverent way, through a combination of sketches. Whether it’s satirizing the President, spoofing Nazis, or ordering up some soul food, Key & Peele showcase their chemistry, camaraderie and unique point of view, born from their shared background and experiences growing up biracial in a not quite post-racial world. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are debuting their original sketch-comedy show on Comedy Central on January 31st. Tickets are $25.50.

Jeffrey Ross appears Saturday, March 3rd, 8PM at the Colony Theatre. Jeff Ross’s blistering performances at celebrity roasts honoring mega stars like Joan Rivers, Hugh Hefner, Pamela Anderson, Jerry Stiller, Drew Carey, Donald Trump and most recently Charlie Sheen has crowned him as a “One-Man Verbal Assault Unit”. Jeff also just finished taping a pilot for his very own show on Comedy Central where he “Roasts” the hot topics of the week. As a stand-up comic, Jeff has appeared on dozens of TV shows including David Letterman, Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O’Brien, Carson Daly, ABC’s “The View” and HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher”. Jeff also continues to perform regularly for American men and women in uniform stationed all over the world. Tickets are $35.00.

Donald Glover performs Saturday, March 3rd, 7PM at the Fillmore Miami Beach. Donald Glover is the consummate example of the Hollywood triple-threat. The 28-year old actor, writer, and musician is quickly positioning himself as one of Hollywood’s most promising talents. He is most recognized for his role as the jock “Troy” on NBC’s Community, but in addition, he continues to tour and perform stand-up. His one-hour stand-Up special “Wierdo” aired in November 2011 on Comedy Central. In July 2010, Donald received the first-ever Rising Comedy Star of the Year Award at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. In addition to acting, Donald raps under the moniker “Childish Gambino”. Donald’s single “Freaks and Geeks,” is featured in the new Dwight Howard Adidas campaign, and he has recently wrapped his sold out I AM DONALD TOUR, a unique hybrid between music and comedy. Donald recently completed his first full length album, Camp, which was released on Glassnote records. The album sold over 50,000 copies in its first week of release. Tickets are $32.50.

Late night, 10PM, on Saturday, March 3rd Aziz Ansari takes over the Fillmore stage. Aziz Ansari has quickly established his presence in the comedy world. He began performing standup in 2001 while attending NYU and continues to perform at venues all over the world today. He is currently starring in a popular television series, has a number of films on deck and debuted his first hour-long standup special and album. The Hollywood Reporter said that he “has become one of the most prolific writers and performers on the comedy scene in recent years” and Rolling Stone recently placed him on the cover of their special comedy issue labeling him “the funniest man under 30.” In addition, Paste Magazine has named him one of the “Top 10 Comedians of the Decade.” Aziz recently wrapped up a major multi-city standup tour called the “Dangerously Delicious Tour” and will soon release this as another hour long standup special. Tickets are $45.00, $37.50, and $35.00.

There will also be three exciting performers at the intimate Backstage at the Fillmore venue each doing two shows Thursday and Friday at 8 and 10PM and Saturday at 7 and 9PM.

First on Thursday March 1st Amy Schumer, one of the fastest rising comics on the scene, takes the stage. Amy’s Comedy Central Presents Half Hour comedy special premiered in April and was one of the highest rated specials in recent years. She was a guest on The Ellen Degeneres Show, where Ellen was quoted as saying “Amy is one of my favorites; I expect to see big things from this girl”. Tickets are $24.50.

Then on Friday, March 2nd for two shows at 8 & 10PM it’s Rob Delaney’s turn to entertain. Rob performs stand up regularly at the top comedy venues in Los Angeles, New York, and various comedy clubs across the United States. On Twitter, Rob has created a following of nearly 230,000 followers that grows every day. He’s been listed on “The Funniest People on Twitter” on such sites as the Huffington Post, Vice Magazine, Paste Magazine, Comedy Central, and Funny or Die. Tickets are $22.50.

Finally, Hannibal Buress performs on Saturday, March 3rd. Cool, confident and intelligent, comedian Hannibal Buress has the well-earned respect of his peers, who regard him as one of the brightest young talents to emerge from the city of Chicago. A natural storyteller who can captivate a room with his words alone, Hannibal generates huge laughs with the laidback, quirky observations that have become his trademark style. From his stories about his experiences with dating older women, the merits of Courier New font, and his not-so-secret desire to kick pigeons, Hannibal never fails to entertain. Tickets are $20.00.

Tickets for these shows go on sale Friday, February 3rd at www.southbeachcomedyfestival.com, www.livenation.com, the Fillmore Miami Beach Box Office, all TicketMaster outlets or charge by phone: 1-800-745-3000.

All dates, acts and ticket prices are subject to change without notice. All tickets are subject to applicable taxes, parking and service and handling charges.

Comedy And Cinema Changing The Grove One Joke At A Time

Last Wednesday (December 21, 2011) Comedy & Cinema was at it’s best. The evening started with our host R-Jay warming up the crowd for comedians Gil Tucker and the headliner Lady T.

Following the comedy show the audience enjoyed the feature presentation “A Christmas Wish” written and directed by Lawrence “Law” Watford. (click here to watch the full movie on line).

This week is shaping up to be more of the same. Our headliner will be Antwon “Spunky” Robinson followed by our featured film “Karma” directed by 15 year old Lamar Pitts.

As usual Comedian R-Jay will set the tone for a fantastic night, while the newly added Comedy & Cinema Girls make everyone feel like a V.I.P.

Headliner Antwon “Spunky” Robinson
Comedian “Spunky” Robinson is a native of Miami, Florida and has been doing stand-up comedy for over 2 years. In 2010 he competed in, and won a comedy contest at the Miami Improv. Following his win at the Improv, he went on to perform in front of 4,000 people at the James L Knight Center.

This Week’s Feature Film “KARMA”
Karma is a movie that shows resilience in a manner with no dialogue. A must see. The main character is the one who experiences obstacles that are full of turmoil. However, when he least expects it, an angel comes to repair his life. Directed by 15 year old Lamar Pitts. Don’t miss the live Q&A with Lamar directly following the film.

This week (Wednesday, December 28, 2011) Comedy & Cinema will introduce the Comedy & Cinema Girls. In the tradition of the Playboy Club, 4-5 beautiful young ladies will play hostess to guests as they prepare to enjoy the show.

Unlike the the bikini clad Bunnies of the 60s, these girls will be dressed to kill in the latest fashions from local designers and boutiques.

Each week the Comedy and Cinema Girls will strut their stuff modeling a brand new high end look while Comedian R-Jay host the best damn comedy show in the Grove before introducing a great, new, exciting independent film.

Every Wednesday evening at The Backlot Wine, Bar and Lounge, conveniently tucked away inside of the Paragon Theater in Cocowalk from 6:30pm – 10pm, laughter is king and independent movies rule the big screen.

“Comedy and Cinema in the Grove has made Wednesday night become the new Friday,” says Kwame Taijon a weekly patron. The word is out about this one of a kind showcase that combines stand up comedy with all genres of independent films in the plush comfort of the Backlot private lounge and Audi screening room.

“You never know who’s going to show up to bless the mic.” Says comedian R-Jay. Last week comedian Sean Larkins of the Rickey Smiley Morning Show made an unscheduled stop along with the very funny Mario Tory. Our scheduled headliner Gil Tucker brought the house down while the host Comedian R-Jay kept everyone laughing.

Every week, along with the very talented and funny comedian R-Jay audiences are treated to a hilarious headliner before the feature presentation. This week, on December 14, 2011 the headliner will be comedian Artist Treece.

Also on December 14, 2011 the short film line up for the evening will include Attika Torrence’s “Dilemma” and “Signs” by Patrick Hughes. Our featured Filmmaker Lawrence Law Watford will join us via Skype directly following his short film “A Christmas Wish” for a Q & A session.

Three Nights Only — March 9-11, 2012
The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater

Emmy winning star of all three “Ice Age” films, “Carlito’s Way,” Baz Lurhmann’s “Romeo + Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge!,” “To Wong Foo…” and “Executive Decision” stars in “Ghetto Klown”

Emmy Award winner John Leguizamo, known for his many film roles — as the voice of Sid in all three “Ice Age” films, Baz Lurhmann’s “Romeo + Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge!,” “To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar,” “Carlito’s Way,” and “Executive Decision” — performs his Broadway show “Ghetto Klown” for three performances only March 9-11 at the The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater as part of his 2012 US tour.

The New York Times says that Leguizamo on stage is “irresistible. He has the energy of a 12-year old who has just downed a Red Bull and a jumbo package of Twinkies.” Variety says he is hyper-talented with “Dead-on and deliciously cruel impersonations.” The Los Angeles Times says he is “a nuclear performer, ricocheting around the stage as though he had been shot out of a pistol!”

John says, “I love that all my peoples are showing up to witness the latest chapter of my life on stage; I want to keep this show open until I’ve messed up my 10 year old son enough for him to be my understudy.” Conceived and performed by Leguizamo and directed by Academy Award winner Fisher Stevens, “Ghetto Klown” is presented by WestBeth Entertainment.

Leguizamo, who has appeared in more than fifty films and was also seen on Nickelodeon series “The Brothers Garcia,” as well as on “ER” and “Miami Vice,” is also one of the nation’s most accomplished stage performers. “Ghetto Klown” is the next chapter in John Leguizamo’s popular personal and professional story. It is his fifth one-man play, his third on Broadway, and follows in the uninhibited tradition of his “Mambo Mouth,” “Spic-O-Rama,” “Freak,” and “Sexaholix … a Love Story.” In Leguizamo’s trademark style, the piece explodes with energy, heating up the stage with vivid accounts of the colorful characters that populate his life. Headliner: Forrest Shaw
Born in Miami and raised as an only child by a single hippie mother, Forrest Shaw got into stand-up comedy after a decade of life as a marine biologist. Saving manatees and counting seagrass by day, at night, Forrest dedicated himself to comedy, quickly working his way into regular club work. The influence of his former life as a biologist is evident in his material. Forrest delivers witty and clever anecdotes of his unorthodox with a wry smile. He shares his own faults and failures with the audience in hopes that they too can find the lighter side of those things in life, which sometimes seem too much to bear. He also isn’t fond of stupid people; but who is? Life is complicated and it shouldn’t be. We have created all of this stress and aggravation so the healthiest thing to do is make fun of ourselves and laugh about it.

Featuring the hilarious Wendi Starling and Richy Lala

The Emmy Award-Winning Comic Phenom And Star Of Bravo Tv’s “My Life On The D-List”

For reservations, visit www.arshtcenter.org or call the box office at (305) 949-6722.

Now celebrating its Fifth Anniversary Season, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County in partnership with AEG proudly presents a very special addition to the 2010-2011 Comedy Planet Series! On March 28, 2010 at 8 p.m. Kathy Griffin will present a racy, raucous, rambunctious evening of stand-up comedy in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall.

Tickets range from $49 to $79 and are on sale now. Tickets may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at www.arshtcenter.org.

“Kathy Griffin has her own special brand of comedy that is sharp and witty, candid and side-splittingly funny,” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “Her humor speaks to audiences across race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation, and is simply the perfect addition to our 2010-2011 Comedy Planet series, reflecting and celebrating the great diversity of the Magic City.”

Kathy Griffin may be known as the quintessential D-list diva, but not afraid to dish on everyone from Lindsay Lohan to Cher. She has shopped for bikinis with Paris Hilton, screamed and cheered alongside the “Clay-mates,” and allegedly had a serious romantic relationship with Levi Johnston. You won’t, however, catch her riffing on the Jews, the lesbians, or Barbara Walters – this divine diva knows her limits! KATHY GRIFFIN is a multi-faceted performer whose rapid-fire wit has garnered her multiple Emmy Awards and two Grammy Award nominations for Best Comedy Album.

A Chicago native, Griffin rose to fame during her four-year stint on the NBC sitcom “Suddenly Susan,” playing Brooke Shields’ acerbic colleague. After relocating to Los Angeles, she began building her professional resume with guest starring roles on “ER” and “Seinfeld,” eventually gaining critical acclaim as a stand-up comedian and landing her own HBO Special. Griffin’s television career quickly expanded to include appearances on late night talk shows, starring “roles” on reality TV shows, and multiple red carpet hosting appearances – some more well-received than others. In 2005, GRIFFIN’s reality show “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-list” debuted on Bravo to rave reviews. Now in its sixth season, “D-list” has won multiple Emmy Awards and skyrocketed GRIFFIN to widespread recognition, capitalizing on her candid observations and hilarious brand of humor.

Tel: 305.542.7732
www.nextat19th.org

Next@19th proudly presents a night of creativity, humor and entertainment with Hanukah Haiku and Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad. On the brightest and last night of Hanakuh, poets, artists and writers will come together to share original haikus about Hanukah and Jewish culture at Next@19th in downtown Miami. Slated for December 8, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., this celebration also marks the official launch of the non-profit organization, whose goal is to move Jewish culture forward with an inclusive, cutting-edge program.

“I put the whore in hora,” declares the Goddess Perlman, ringmaster and MC extraordinaire of Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad – and so goes an evening of bashing all stereotypes ever uttered about Jewish women. Bringing a combination of comedy, parody and burlesque to South Florida on the last and brightest day of Hanukkah, please find below details of Next@19th’s holiday celebration.

Burlesque entertainers Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad bring a combination of parody and burlesque to the night: a refreshing mix of comedy, cabaret and spoken-word with must-have archetypal characters including the gals who learned to smoke at Hebrew School, got drunk at their Bat Mitzvahs and would rather have more schtuppa than the chupah. In keeping with the theme of the party He’Brew, ‘The Chosen Beer,’ will be on tap throughout the night.

This event will kick-off Next@19th’s 2010 – 2011 season, which includes regularly-programmed thought-provoking and fun events. Arts, learning and spirituality happenings will unite cultural traditions, beliefs and introduce new facets of the Jewish identity. Next@19th’s dynamic program takes an inclusive approach to sharing Judaism with members of any faith or background.

About Next@19th: Moving Jewish Culture Forward
Next@19th was founded in July 2010 to engage South Florida’s diverse community in fresh culture, learning and spiritual experience through a Jewish lens. Producing original programming, the organization will host a range of events and activities. This 2010 – 2011 season promises celebrations of music, literary arts, visual art, education and spirituality as well as dynamic projects in partnership with Miami Book Fair International, the Jewish Film Festival and University of Wynwood. Next@19th is located at 137 NE 19 Street, Miami FL 33132, on the campus of Temple Israel’s historic site in downtown Miami. Impromedy Presents Get Big at the Roxy Performing Arts Center 7/30-8/20/10

Impromedy Presents Get Big at the Roxy Performing Arts Center
An all-new sketch and improv show from South Florida’s premiere comedy company
Fridays from July 30 to August 20, 2010. Doors Open 8:30 PM
$10 General Admission / $8 with Student ID

This month, Impromedy proves once and for all that bigger is better with their all-new sketch and improv comedy show Get Big at the Roxy Performing Arts Center (1645 SW 107th Ave, Miami, FL 33165).
Get Big is a unique and uproariously funny blend of original sketch (think Saturday Night Live, Mad TV) and improv (think Who’s Line is it Anyway?) comedy by South Florida’s top improv performers. So what is improv comedy? It’s comedy made up right before your very eyes. No scripts, no memorized dialogue, no rehearsed scenes: just crazy ideas, tons of energy, and your suggestions. And that means: BIG audience, BIG funny!
Watch in amazement as Impromedy players (who have trained at The Second City, Upright Citizens Brigade, and Improv Olympic) bring audience suggestions to life on stage while also giving practical diet and exercise tips, like*:
· How to use the Shake Weight™ as a powerful and effective tool for building muscle mass.
· Why tripling the FDA-recommended daily servings of red meat can actually make you leaner and stronger.
· How to take your workout clothes from daytime to date night in a pinch.

So, if you have considered ordering the 48 oz. porterhouse from Shula’s Steakhouse… Or you have ever attempted the P90X™ workout series… Or you’re just in the mood for some BIG laughs this weekend… Don’t miss Get Big!

Visit www.impromedymiami.com for a calendar of upcoming shows, cast bios, video, and more.

An All-New Sketch & Improv Show from South Florida’s Premiere Comedy Company

Instead of heading to the movies this weekend, why not cuddle up with a good book? Wait. Scratch that. Instead of cuddling up with a good book this weekend, why not head to Impromedy’s all-new sketch and improv comedy show STFU! This is a Library at the Roxy Performing Arts Center?

STFU! is a unique and uproariously funny blend of original sketch (think Saturday Night Live, Mad TV) and improv (think Who’s Line is it Anyway?) comedy by South Florida’s top improv performers. So what is improv comedy? It’s comedy made up right before your very eyes. No scripts, no memorized dialogue, no rehearsed scenes: just crazy ideas, tons of energy, and your suggestions. No audience, no funny!

Watch in amazement as Impromedy players (who have trained at The Second City, Upright Citizens Brigade, and Improv Olympic) bring audience suggestions to life on stage and answer their most burning literary queries, like, “What would happen if Green Eggs and Ham was an action movie?” STFU! takes audience members on a hysterical tour of the library, if your librarians were Tina Fey and Dane Cook.

So, if you wish you read the classics in high school instead of picking up the Cliff Notes… Or if you hate it when your boss references famous literary characters that go right over your head (“Son, you remind me of a young Captain Ahab.”)… Or if your personal library consists solely of the film adaptations of Nicholas Sparks’ novels… Don’t miss STFU! This is a Library!* We can’t promise you’ll learn anything, but you sure will have fun!

*STFU! This is a Library is not a legitimate alternative to summer school/SAT prep classes/or reading the newspaper.

Sex and the Animals 2/14/09

“Sex and the Animals”
Saturday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Listed as a “Best Bet” by The Miami Herald, Ron Magill’s entertaining and informative presentation “Sex and the Animals” has been enjoyed by thousands. Through interesting biofacts and an amazing variety of images, Magill illustrates the incredible facts surrounding the courtship and breeding behaviors found throughout the animal kingdom. Dealing with everything from frogs to elephants, this program is “education through entertainment” in the best sense of the term. Magill uses humor to keep the audience loose as he presents the wonders of nature, giving a whole new meaning to the term, “doing the wild thing.” Tickets for the presentation at Miami Metrozoo are $30 ($25 for Zoological Society members), including wine and cheese. An optional dinner at Amazon & Beyond is available for an additional charge.

Marga Gomez Long Island Iced Latina

Wednesday, January 21, 2009, 7:30pm
Colony Theater
1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL

One of America’s first openly Queer comics, GLAAD and Ovation award winner Marga has been seen on LOGO and Comedy Central. In Long Island Iced Latina, Marga pours a long tall drink of cultural confusion, chronic virginity and mother daughter instability. What begins as a hilariously dark memoir of Gomez as the only brown girl in a white high school morphs into an intoxicating manifesto for Latinos who can’t speak Spanish, suck at Salsa, and suffer from Blonditis.

What begins as a hilariously dark memoir of Gomez as the only brown girl in a white high school morphs into an intoxicating manifesto for Latinos who can’t speak Spanish, suck at Salsa, and suffer from Blonditis. “We’re everywhere!” Gomez claims. “And we vote!”

Marga Gomez, who as been described as a “Latina Lily Tomlin” and as a “Lesbian Larry the Cable Guy,” is the winner of the GLAAD Award for Off-Broadway Theater and a Drama Desk Award nominee. She is the writer /performer of five critically acclaimed solo plays and two others that weren’t too bad. Gomez is also one of America’s first openly gay comedians with appearances on LOGO network, Comedy Central and PBS. For her third engagement with Miami Light Project, Gomez will serve up Long Island Iced Latina a new solo comedy that sold out Joe’s Pub as part of Teatro Stagefest in 2007.
